#The Telescopes

I was driving to the Bay Area the other day with a friend and we listened to The Flaming Lips "The Soft Bulletin" immediately followed by "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots." We liked it so much we went back for a second helping of "The Soft Bulletin".

Given my love for those albums, I'm really at a loss of words to explain how my first deep dive into The Telescopes (England) waited until early 2025. I read about the reissue of compilation "Altered Perception" on vinyl and listened to the first song "The Perfect Needle". I thought of Suicide and The Jesus and Mary Chain (and more recent bands like The Pink Noise), but as I got deeper into the 2 LP I thought of The Flaming Lips and Spiritualized.

I then read Tim Sendra's review of their "# Untitled Second" (originally issued by Creation Records) and realized I was just "getting" what others had gotten long ago. Early Telescopes was dismissed as part of the shoegaze era, but it is so much more than that. Stephen Lawrie has been the one constant in a band that is entering its 4th decade.

For me, this compilation has been the perfect starting point, and has convinced me need to get "# Untitled Second". The reissue was handled by Space Age Recordings.
