What are y'alls favorite ecosystems?
Laios: The Australian Outback is full of some of the most amazing and deadly species on the planet, with unique adaptations that are rare to find anywhere else on earth. It has some of the most incredible views, and the arid environment is always persevering and thriving in the most unexpected ways. The outback is a place of constant wonder and nostalgia for me. Ever since I was a kid, and up until recently really, I always struggled to find a place where I could fit in and be myself. Me and Falin grew up on a small Emu farm in the bush, so I spent a lot of time on the outskirts of the outback, sticking to the same paths so that I wouldn't get lost, and despite it being dangerous, as long as I was careful, it ended up providing a safe haven for me until I saved up enough to leave the country and forge my own path in the world.
Tumblr media
Falin: Definitely Tropical Rainforests, they hold the largest number of insect species on the planet (2.5 million in the Amazon Rainforest alone!) and are endless in their importance. There are so many things left to discover in them, from hundreds of hidden cave systems, around 80,000 plant species and, along with the ocean, they act almost as the lungs of the earth, providing most of the oxygen we need to survive. Last year, Marcille and I worked with SPUN trying to map as many mychorrzial fungi as possible, in several tropical forests of South America, Africa and Australia. After a year spent buried in the undergrowth, among the ferns, moss and mulch, it's like you can feel Earth's beating heart. I would love to return to one of them soon.
Tumblr media
Marcille: Archipelagos. Groups of islands, both tropical and temperate are my favourite places of study. Every island has it's own unique ecosystem and these multitudes of them contain the secrets of evolution, genetics and cultural changes throughout history. From animals adapting to each island and forming new species, to ethnobotany and traditions that change and adapt, stemming from when people first took to the sea, and the legacies they leave behind to this day.
Tumblr media
Chilchuck: The Irish Countryside. Valleys, Vales or Dales, whatever you wanna call them, there's nowhere I like being more. Despite having travelled the world with Laios, Falin, Marcille, and later Senshi, there isn't much that compares to the rolling hills of home.
Tumblr media
Senshi: Microbiomes of all habitats. People often overlook the importance of the little things, and all the good they do for us in return for leaving them be. Macrophotography has always been a large passion of mine, and I'm fortunate enough to have landed a career in capturing the beauty of it all.

On the Brazilian Coast, a Tropical Town Beloved by Artists and Makers
A guide to Paraty, on the Costa Verde, with tips on where to stay, shop and island hop from the artist Vik Muniz and four other insiders.
Tumblr media
Roughly halfway between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the coastal town of Paraty (population 45,000) isn’t the easiest place to reach. It requires a four-hour, mostly mountainous drive from either city, a 45-minute helicopter charter or arrival by sea. It’s that relative seclusion that keeps the tourist hordes and unbridled development at bay, despite the town’s obvious appeal. Set on Brazil’s Costa Verde, with mountains covered in rainforest on one side and the emerald green waters of Ilha Grande Bay on the other, Paraty (pronounced para-CHEE by locals), preserves more than 30 blocks as its historic quarter, a grid of pedestrian-only cobblestone streets lined with whitewashed 18th- and 19th-century facades, many of them remnants of the Portuguese colonial era.
Startingin the mid-1600s, the town grew prosperous as a seaport during the country’s gold rush (many of the biggest gold mines were in the neighboring inland state Minas Gerais) — and as a hub for the slave trade. African slaves not only worked in the mines but built much of the town’s early infrastructure, such as its roads. Once the gold stopped coming through Paraty for export in the early 1700s, the town continued to harvest sugar cane and produce cachaça, the national spirit, before shifting its economic focus to the coffee trade. At the end of the 19th century, Santos, 190 miles to the south, supplanted Paraty as the country’s primary coffee-exporting port, and the town began to languish. “It fell off the map,” says Luana Assunção, the owner of the Rio-based travel company Free Walker Tours. “It became isolated and poor. Many houses were abandoned.”
By the 1970s, a new highway and an influx of urban transplants had given Paraty an infusion of new life. Lured by the area’s affordability, a number of artists, designers and other creative types began renovating the old mansions and opening a handful of galleries, boutiques, cafes and small hotels, turning the long-forgotten town into an alluring vacation destination.
“I was worried that mass tourism would endanger the future of the culture and the nature in Paraty, but it didn’t happen,” says the nature photographer Dom João de Orleans e Bragança, who has been visiting Paraty since 1968 and now lives there most of the year. He credits the strict building codes for imbuing the town with a certain timeless quality, even after the pandemic when the area’s second-home owners began spending more time in Paraty. “You’ll never see a skyscraper, and we don’t have big resorts or hotels here.”

Jurassic World Dominion — My Edition — News Reels
After the prologue and the additional scene involving the baby, news reals come up in a montage and show what the world was going through the five years since the eruption of Isla Nublar and incident at the Lockwood Manor.
Dinosaur-caused casualties: Ever since fall 2018, dozens, maybe even hundreds of people were killed by dinosaurs, where the it’d be accidentally scaring herbivorous dinosaurs like Stegosaurus or Brachiosaurus… or intentionally being killed by carnivorous dinosaurs like Compsognathus or Allosaurus if said dinos are hungry or desperate for food.
Dinosaurs eating crops: Several herbivorous dinosaur species start eating crops like corn or wheat, mostly out of curiosity as dinosaurs never ate crops before.
Dinosaurs spreading across the world: From a combination of migration, natural breeding, illegal breeding, overseas transportation, etc., more dinosaurs are spreading across the world.
More dinosaur species appearing: Throughout the five years since the Lockwood Manor incident, more dinosaur species have been appearing, as well as spreading across the world through migration, natural breeding, illegal breeding, overseas transportation, etc.
Dinosaurs suffering heavy poaching: With dinosaurs appearing around the world, illegal poaching becomes a threat to all dinosaurs, herbivorous and carnivorous alike. Ceratopsians and stegosaurids start to suffer from the poaching that elephants and rhinos go through.
Dinosaurs impacting ecosystems: Ever since fall 2018, reports came in on dinosaurs negatively impacting ecosystems with the herbivorous dinosaurs eating much more flora and leaving barely anything for modern animals such as deer and such. And carnivorous dinosaurs were eating more modern animals like deer and such than natural breeding can replenish.
Dinosaurs dealing with invasive plant and animal species: Not all about dinosaurs in the world is bad as large reports of carnivorous dinosaurs like Carnotaurus, Velociraptor, and several others are eating invasive wild boars in America. And marine animals like juvenile Elasmosaurus and even sea scorpions have been observed eating invasive lion fish in the Atlantic. Not to mention pterasours feast on invasive Asian cod in American rivers.
Biosyn’s aid in the matter: Now having the ability to clone and release dinosaurs, Biosyn provides aid in relocating captured dinosaurs to the Biosyn Sanctuary or wildlife reserves. Thus allowing Biosyn to receive billions of dollars in government grants. On top of that, Biosyn aims to study dinosaurs for beneficial purposes for the dinosaurs, modern wildlife and humanity.
Biosyn helping restore forests: Using genetic modifications, Biosyn helps in restoring forests around the world; including the rainforests & mangrove forests of Central America, South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, Indonesia and Australia. And native tree species are obviously being used in these projects, and therefore the trees are native to the areas they’re being planted and grown at.
Biosyn terraforming several deserts: Biosyn is also bringing tropical rainforests and lush wetlands into barren deserts like the northern part of the Sahara Desert, with a good number of plants/trees being cloned from fossilized Mesozoic flora.
Status on Isla Nublar: News on Isla Nublar reveal that most of the island is utterly destroyed, and Mt Sibo is nothing but a large deep crater. That reveals that Sibo’s eruption in 2018 was as large & destructive as Mount Vesuvius’s eruption in 79ad, maybe more powerful. And the huge amounts of ash, fire, and lava have utterly destroyed much of Nublar’s greenery, leaving the island with barren wastelands unable to provide for any dinosaurs.
As an extra, during the montage, several recordings are shown. With one being a flock of (JWE2-looking) Cearadactylus roosting/nesting atop the White House in Washington DC. Another recording shows a mixed herd of Tenontosaurus and Pachyrhinosaurus eating a corn field. A third recording shows (TLW) Velociraptors hunting herds of invasive wild boar.
And that’s all the news reals topics regarding the dinosaurs and the changes going world. And yes, i do plan on making & releasing posts talking about several of these news reals, so stay tuned.

Highest alert level raised as Philippines braces for Typhoon Usagi
A fifth major storm in three weeks hit the northeastern Philippines on Thursday, prompting new large-scale evacuations and a UN appeal for funds to help the government address the plight of rural residents.
At least 1,400 people have been evacuated from coastal areas as well as flood and landslide-prone areas of Dinalungan and the nearby municipality of Baler, according to Donald Allan Tay, spokesman for the disaster management headquarters.
In total, the Philippine government ordered the evacuation of 2,500 villages on Sunday, although the national disaster management office did not have figures on the total number of evacuees. Mervina Pableo, civil defence chief of Dinalungan town near Dilasag, said:
“We have been hit by strong winds and heavy rains. Some trees are falling and electricity has been cut off since yesterday. We can’t go out and do damage assessment yet.”
The successive storms have drained the resources of both the government and local households, the UN said late Tuesday. Some 210,000 people most affected by the recent flooding need support for “critical life-saving and protection efforts over the next three months,” the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a statement. UN Philippines Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Gustavo Gonzalez said:
“Typhoons are overlapping. As soon as communities attempt to recover from the shock, the next tropical storm is already hitting them again. In this context, the response capacity gets exhausted and budgets depleted.”
The typhoon is approaching
The Meteorological Service said the Typhoon Usagi, with maximum wind speeds of 130 km/h, was moving rapidly to the northwest and was forecast to head into the South China Sea on on Thursday evening, passing through the mountainous terrain of the main Philippine island of Luzon.
Schools and government offices have been closed in areas expected to be hardest hit by the latest typhoon.
The National Meteorological Agency warned of strong winds and heavy rain in the north of the country, as well as a “moderate to high risk of storm surge” – giant waves threatening the coast of the main island of Luzon.

Exploring Vanuatu The Best Time to Visit this Pacific Paradise
Tumblr media
Vanuatu, an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, is a dream destination for travelers seeking pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and vibrant culture. However, choosing the right time to visit can greatly enhance your experience. From weather patterns to cultural events, several factors play a role in determining the best time to explore this tropical haven.
Weather Considerations: Vanuatu experiences a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: the wet season (November to April) and the dry season (May to October). While both seasons offer unique experiences, the dry season is often favored by travelers due to its sunny days, lower humidity, and minimal rainfall. However, if you don't mind occasional showers and lush greenery, the wet season can also be a beautiful time to visit, especially for budget-conscious travelers.
Peak Season vs. Off-Peak Season: The peak tourist season in Vanuatu coincides with the dry season, particularly from June to August when the weather is at its finest. During this time, you can expect higher accommodation rates and crowds at popular tourist attractions. For a more tranquil experience and potential cost savings, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (April to May and September to October) when the weather is still pleasant, and tourist numbers are lower.
Special Events and Festivals: Immerse yourself in Vanuatu's rich cultural heritage by timing your visit with one of its vibrant festivals. The Vanuatu Agricultural Show in May showcases the country's agricultural bounty, while the Naghol Land Dive in April offers a thrilling spectacle where locals dive from wooden towers with vines tied to their ankles. Additionally, Independence Day celebrations on July 30th feature traditional dances, feasts, and music, providing insight into Vanuatu's history and traditions.
Diving and Snorkeling Conditions: Vanuatu boasts some of the world's most pristine dive sites, including the SS President Coolidge wreck and the famous Blue Hole. For optimal underwater visibility and calm seas, plan your diving or snorkeling adventures during the dry season when the ocean is typically clearer. However, even during the wet season, many dive sites remain accessible and offer unique underwater encounters, such as the chance to witness migratory species and coral spawning events.
Wildlife Encounters: Nature enthusiasts will delight in Vanuatu's diverse wildlife, including rare birds, marine life, and endemic species. To maximize wildlife sightings, consider visiting during the dry season when many species are more active and easier to spot. Birdwatchers, in particular, can enjoy the presence of migratory birds during this time, including the majestic white terns that flock to the islands.
Conclusion: Best Time to Visit Vanua tuseek sun-drenched beaches, cultural immersion, or thrilling outdoor adventures, Vanuatu offers something for every traveler. By considering factors such as weather patterns, peak tourist seasons, special events, and outdoor activities, you can plan your visit to this Pacific paradise at the best time to suit your preferences and interests. So pack your bags, embark on an unforgettable journey, and discover the timeless beauty of Vanuatu.

Aaand for the WIPs... it's Light of Aether time! 🌍 💥 🤝 🌑
Yes.... YES! I am gently kissing you on the forehead
(without tongue)
(...)
(...I hope you get the reference or else this will sound weird, lmao)
-
🌍 - What is distinctive about the setting? What sets it apart?
What sets it apart may be the planet itself. Aether is alive, in that it has something like a neural system and it is linked to all lifeforms via energy. Not like Primus at all, nooo.
Aetherians can use and manipulate their life energy to store or summon inanimate objects like tools or machines, with the main criterion being that they have to build them by themselves beforehand and memorize their blueprints for as long as they are using them.
One could make a train, disassemble it and store its parts away for an hour, then they summon the train and it assembles itself again in a matter of seconds. And Aetherians have to sacrifice their life energy to make it, so if the object is lost and they cannot retrieve it, they lose a part of themselves.
Aether operates similarly but on a much larger scale. It isn't sentient nor sapient, but it has energy it can use to shape nature. Like making the grass grow faster or altering the ph-level or temperature of a spring by heating up the area around a groundwater reservoir.
On its surface, Aether is a boring planet. It's a geoid, has an atmosphere, water and land and life. It has continental plates and two continents which are home to the Diurnal Kingdom and the Nocturnal Kingdom respectively.
I'm afraid there is no world map I can show you, but you can imagine it looking similar to Pangaea where Eurasia has split apart and taken the Arctic's place. That's the Nocturnal Kingdom's realm. It's small, it's cold and in Winter the entire continent is shrouded in darkness as a result of polar night.
The Diurnal Kingdom spans the entirety of the second, much larger continent. It is divided into four regions - four cities - that have the most creative names of all time (sarcasm). The capital city (Capital City) is the residence of the monarchy and a metropolis for art, music, religion and culture. Located near the northern tropic, it is not surprising that the surrounding area is a desert.
The next nearest region is called the Western Islands, although the name is misleading. A chain of islands, an archipelago, makes up only a fraction of the area, while the mainland is surrounded by a lush and beautiful rain forest near the equator. Despite its tropical flair, manufacturers have claimed these lands and built factories near the sea.
Further south is a region that kept its name (Eastern Settlements) after its districts merged into a city over time. Aetherians are long-lived and they don't forget easily which is why it's often a challenge to change the names of locations after thousands of years. The Eastern Settlements are important for the food industry. Just outside the city are fields as far as the eye can reach and they supply the capital city combined with the southernmost area with *sustenance*.
Far to the south, where our Earth's antarctic circle would be, lies Sonatus, the cold and snowy region of the Diurnal Kingdom. Technology makes up the largest part of export products, as does music. In terms of population, it has the second highest number of inhabitants after the capital city. I named it after a planet from a video game because I liked it.
Tumblr media
Old sketches of the capital city from above and the upper garden area of the Royal Guard Academy from different angles (featuring Expugnatrix). I tried to capture the feeling pictures of mega-structures evoke. The scale doesn't translate well through the images though.
-
💥 - What is the main conflict of the wip?
There are a total of five stories set in the same universe, one main story and four sequels so to say. One event which connects them all is the corruption of their planet's core through a parasite. How did the parasite even get there?
Through pollution.
Pollution oozed its way through the soil until it reached the center where it accumulated enough mass and energy to form a creature which infests Aether's core. Said creature feasts on the energy and in turn it poisons its surface.
Plants absorb this poison, small creatures eat them, larger creatures eat them, Aetherians eat them too. It affects their bodies, mutilates matter and makes it rot, all of which may lead to a very slow, painful death. Fewer successful crops all over the kingdom are the first indicator that something is wrong with their planet.
The first story's main characters are a bunch of students and their professor and they seek to find a cure for nature, but an ancient prophecy looms over them, speaking of a Chosen One who will rid Aether of its plight. There is no chosen one, but one of the less important main characters has been made to believe that they are and they will try their best to fulfill the prophecy, even if it costs them their life.
Tumblr media
I tried to draw a zombified citizen once. It didn't look good.
Spoiler for the first story's finale: they kill the parasite, but at the beginning of the second story, a team of researchers finds leftovers of its genome and they use it to experiment on fellow Aetherians to make them stronger and more durable.
In the third story, they succeed with the creation of cyborg hybrids thanks to the parasite's genes and in the fourth they find a person who seems to have inherited its power but in the fifth they find out about its parallel universe counterpart and kill the parasite once and for all.
It's also important to note that at the end of the second story, the Nocturnal Kingdom declares war on the Diurnal Kingdom that lasts for a long time because there is an event where a person assassinates both royal families at the same time.
-
🤝 - How do the characters meet? (antagonist included!)
The protagonists are five students (Expugnatrix, Estian, Rhiza, Om, Sophagon) who share the same professor (Polarfront) but they're not in the same year or class. They meet the second story's protagonists during a council meeting where they propose their ideas for saving the environment.
The protagonists are the minister of defense (Keyland), the minister of science and research (Hytac) and the general of the Southern Troops (Avalanche). The antagonist is the minister of finances (Icador), a lead researcher and bio-engineer (Scyre) and a test subject (The Sorceress). Other important characters are Keyland's brother and the Luminescence of Aether (Searchmark) and Polarfront
Here it's Expugnatrix, Estian and Searchmark again, with the antagonist still being Icador and the Sorceress but also the protagonists' son Etra.
The protagonists are Echo Volta, Bravo Volta and Cryo Volta (and Ranger and Scratch and Amber Varnice but they are not important) who had to leave Aether as the capital city was attacked by the Nocturnal Kingdom. And now they're on Earth. It also happens to be the place where the new monarch of the Nocturnal Kingdom (Lucerna), her sibling/advisor (Ancoralux) and Etra are headed. The Sorceress is on their side, until she reveals her evil plans or whatever and then it will be the two kingdoms against her and her corrupted army.
They are just a bunch of kids messing around and encountering cosmic horrors beyond their comprehension (Sonar, Tinnitus, Halogen, Redox, Nameless, and a character that actually doesn't have a name yet :])
I hope this answers your question. If not, you can inquire for more details.
-
🌑 - Is there reoccurring symbolism? Motifs?
Corruption and integrity - environmental, personal, political
Day and night / Light and dark - superficial, two kingdoms
Compass - guidance, direction

A Journey Through Norway
Tumblr media
Norway, officially the Kingdom of Norway, is a nation in northern Europe's western Scandinavian Peninsula. Svalbard and Jan Mayen are included in the 148,449 sq mi (384,483 sq km) total area. Estimated population in 2023: 5,526,000. Norwegian capital. Although there are various ethnic minorities, including between 30,000 and 40,000 Sami (Lapps), the majority of the population is Norwegian. Norwegian and Sami are the official languages. Religion: Christianity (officially, Evangelical Lutheranism is the predominant form). currency: krone of Norway. Norway is one of the biggest nations in Europe. It is a hilly country with substantial plateau areas in the southwest and center. It has a developed economy mostly centered on services, petroleum and natural gas extraction, as well as light and heavy industries. Historically a fishing and logging country, it has considerably grown its mining and industrial operations since World War II. Literacy is almost universal.
Norway is a constitutional monarchy with a single parliamentary chamber; the king serves as the country's head of state, while the prime minister serves as the head of government. In the eleventh century, a number of principalities were combined to become the kingdom of Norway. From 1380 until 1814, when it was given to Sweden, it shared a ruler with Denmark. When the union with Sweden was broken up in 1905, Norway's economy expanded quickly. Despite the fact that its shipping industry was crucial to the war effort, it stayed neutral throughout the fight. Despite having declared itself neutral during World War II, German forces invaded and seized the area. Norway is a member of NATO and maintains a robust welfare system. In 1994, its citizens rejected joining the European Union.
Tumblr media
Northern lights, Norway
The stark natural beauty of Norway has drawn tourists from all over the world. Other notable artists from the nation include playwright Henrik Ibsen, composer Edvard Grieg, painter Edvard Munch, writers Knut Hamsun and Sigrid Undset, and composer Edvard Grieg. Ibsen made the following observation about his own land and its reflective citizens: "The gorgeous, but severe, natural environment surrounding people up there in the north, the lonely, secluded life—the farms are miles apart—forces them to...become introspective and serious. At home every other person is a philosopher!"
Tumblr media
Fjord, western Norway
Westward flowing rivers had a powerful erosive force. They carved out gorges and canyons that sliced deeply into the rugged coast, following fracture lines denoting weak spots in the Earth's crust. The terrain slopped more gently to the east, creating wider valleys. The magnificent U-shaped drowned fjords that now adorn the western coast of Norway were created by glaciers tonguing down the V-shaped valleys that were part of the landscape during repeated periods of glaciation in the Great Ice Age of the Quaternary Period (i.e., roughly the last 2.6 million years). Glacial action also transported enormous quantities of soil, gravel, and stone as far south as modern-day Denmark and northern Germany. The bedrock, which is exposed in roughly 40% of the area.
Climate of Norway
Although it occupies almost the same degrees of latitude as Alaska, Norway owes its warmer climate to the Norwegian Current (the northeastern extension of the Gulf Stream), which carries four to five million tons of tropical water per second into the surrounding seas. This current usually keeps the fjords from freezing, even in the Arctic Finnmark region. Even more important are the southerly air currents brought in above these warm waters, especially during the winter.
The mean annual temperature on the west coast is 45 °F (7 °C), or 54 °F (30 °C) above average for the latitude. In the Lofoten Islands, north of the Arctic Circle, the January mean is 43 °F (24 °C) above the world average for this latitude and one of the world’s greatest thermal anomalies.
Western Norway has a marine climate, with comparatively cool summers, mild winters, and nearly 90 inches (2,250 mm) of mean annual precipitation. Eastern Norway, sheltered by the mountains, has an inland climate with warm summers, cold winters, and less than 30 inches (760 mm) of mean annual precipitation.
Cultural institutions
Permanent theatres have been established in several cities, and the state traveling theatre, the Riksteatret, organizes tours throughout the country, giving as many as 1,200 performances annually. The Norwegian Opera, opened in 1959, receives state subsidies (as do most other theatres).
In addition to its National Art Gallery, Oslo opened a special museum in 1963 to honour Edvard Munch, credited as one of the founders of Expressionism and as Norway’s most famous painter. The Sonja Henie–Niels Onstad Art Centre, opened in 1968 near Oslo, contains modern art from throughout the world. Oslo is host to many other museums, including the Ibsen Centre, which honours the famed playwright, and the Resistance Museum, which documents Norway’s struggle against Nazi occupation during World War II. Outside Oslo, the Tromsø Museum’s collection records Sami heritage.
EXPENSES
The expenses for traveling to Norway from the Philippines can vary widely depending on factors like the duration of your stay, type of accommodation, activities, and personal preferences. Here are some estimated costs to consider:
Flights: The cost of round-trip flights can vary depending on the time of booking, airline, and travel dates. On average, you might spend between $800 to $1,500 or more.
Accommodation: Accommodation costs can vary from budget hostels (around $40-$100 per night) to mid-range hotels ($100-$250 per night) and luxury hotels ($250+ per night).
Food: Dining out in Norway can be expensive. Expect to spend around $20-$50 for a meal at a mid-range restaurant. You can save money by eating at more budget-friendly places or preparing your own meals.
Transportation: Local transportation in Norway, such as buses and trams, can be costly. A one-way ticket might cost around $3-$4. If you plan to travel between cities, train or bus tickets will vary in price.

Beer and Clothing in the Occident
This post is a reference guide to the Occident, and a follow-up to a couple of previous actions. Much of it applies also to the colonies around the Pearl Sea.
It has been about 500 years since the founding of Azimuth and the beginning of the Sun-Divers as a race, from which events they number the years; the Prophetic Twins, 23 when the calendar was revealed, began it in Year -84. The 364-day solar year is perfectly harmonious with the 13 lunar months (28 days each).
Geography
The realms of civilisation in the Occident are:
The elevated but low-relief plateau of the West. Dominated by savanna, with tropical forests in river valleys and along the coast, and ruled by a crab-bucket of tribal oligarchies.
The relatively cool mountain highlands that run down the continent north/south. The mountains are covered in terrace-farms, the volcanic terrain being well-suited to wet rice cultivation. Cloud-forests, vertical archipelagoes.
The coastal hills of the east, dominated by city-states and little kingdoms. Cities tend to be built in the hills, with adjunct ports on the coast.
The seasonal northern peninsula and islands. Dry forests, more city-states.
The forested, swampy northeastern lowlands support support large (but disorganized) populations of Night-Singers, who generally live as swidden farmers or sedentary/semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers. They also practice shellfish aquaculture on bamboo frames.
The hills around the Red Lake and Azimuth, which mix traits of the highlands and plateau.
Tumblr media
[Americas for scale and latitude.]
The climate of the Occident is not amenable to horses, though there are llamas in the mountains. In the plains, chariots are sometimes drawn by robust, omnivorous avians—mvao—which somewhat resemble secretary-birds.
Social Structure and Customs
The basic structuring unit of Sun-Diver society is the clan. The “Great Clans” are derived from the 364 pairings of the 728 [yes, this is a retcon] original Sun-Divers who descended from the Flowering Tree. (Not, of course, that everyone agrees on the names and identities of those individuals, or who is descended from whom, or whose clan-day is what. A number of competing systems exist.)
Little Clans, of which there are thousands, descend from the Great ones; they are exogamous (in some places, you must marry outside your Little Clan and within your Great Clan). Descent is generally patrilineal, with some regional variation. The human minority organizes itself along similar lines.
There is a simple four-part caste system, with noble clans, common clans, outsiders, and slaves. Outsiders, mostly night-singers, immigrants, and freedmen, do not share in the community of clans (though they can still attain high status), and slaves are alienated from it. Slavery is inflicted on prisoners of war, or as punishment for a crime or debt; legal details vary. It may be transmitted between reincarnations, but not to children. 20% of Sun-Divers belong to noble clans, and not all are de facto wealthy.
The relationship between oneself and one’s previous incarnations is not quite self-identity, but not quite parent-child.
Outside the Night-Singer heartland, the population ratio of Sun-Divers/Humans/Night-Singers is something like 70/15/15, with higher human populations in the north and the colonies (70/20/10 or similar).
Villages have headmen, typically elder (older and more-reincarnated) members of a locally-important noble clan.
Dwellings are long houses, normally raised and thatched, and arranged around a central crèche housing eggs and chrysalises. Bamboo is an important material in craft and building.
A terrible and notorious crime among them is to incise the chrysalis and drink the contents.
Clothing tends to be cotton, adorned by the nobles with dye and feathers. It also tends to be sparse, outside the high elevations. Long strings of glass beads or pearls are much prized.
Sun-Divers and Humans Classic in a given area speak mutually intelligible languages, despite the various alterations applied in Sun-Diver speech.
Warfare is a primarily male activity, though all members of a clan are armed and expected to fight to the death in defence of a crèche.
In this era, battle is conducted by masses of archers armed with bamboo longbows, bolstered by small corps of warriors armed as close fighters, along with elephants and mvao-chariots.
Food and Agriculture
Their staple foods are, necessarily, liquid, and thicker dishes are somewhat more difficult to consume (thickness, sugar, and alcohol content assume a place similar to capsaicin in their cuisine). As in all poor agrarian societies, consumption centers on fairly simple preparations of staple crops. The prototypical dish is a thin broth of grain or sugarcane, possibly with spices, salt, other minerals, or fermented material added before consumption. The other prototypical dish is beer.
They are lactose tolerant, and dairy products are extremely popular. They have a startling tolerance for sugar and alcohol, and fermentation features heavily. The aforementioned beer is common, as are sago wine and arrack. The diet is supplemented with certain minerals and mineral-rich plants (these being preferred to mud and dung, except in famine conditions). Meat is occasionally present, in the form of blood or via fermentation, broths, and purees, but plant proteins predominate. They have an inordinate fondness for tea.
Nectar and fruit juice are not plentiful enough to be staples, but their market gardens feature strains of flowers whose yield of nectar is several times better than can be found in the wild, and floriculture is much more prominent than in baseline human societies. Honey is also a popular delicacy, and the honeyguide revered.
Religion
Their literary centrepiece is The Course of the Sun, a semi-coherent corpus of texts revolving around the deeds and sayings of the Prophetic Twins, the events and conflicts of their progress to the west, didactic dialogues between gods and mortals, and various primeval and primordial human and divine conflicts.
Sky-gods with obvious commonalities and cognate names rule most of the continent’s religious systems. The Implacable Celebrants are the primary religious institution, loosely united by occasional regional gatherings, loyalty to Azimuth, and a shared self-understanding. Other major and minor gods are integrated into several coherent (and increasingly elaborate) cosmic schemas.
The peculiar lifecycle of the sun-divers generates religious innovations. Viz:
The Sky, bright-eyed, rainbow-haloed, the Changer of Days, is minister to the chrysalis and the soul-in-dissolution. He is depicted as male or epicene. His temples tend to be open to the sky. In their simplest form, they are round, walled courtyard-sanctuaries with some holy plant, idol, or other cult object bleaching in the sun; greater ones feature concentric ring-enclosures of richly-painted stone colonnades and gardens, each occulted from the last.
Thousand Wombs, Worm-Mother, patron of the vermiform, is interpreted as a protector of children. She is popular with midwives and in folk magic; furthermore, in the elaborated cosmic systems of the temple-schools, she embodies the "receptive principle", associated with children, fertility, and the retention of knowledge. She is invoked to sanctify oaths and marriages, but is always reticent to release her gifts.
And, should the eyes tire of colors, or the heart of glory, there are the obeisances of the Last God—appeased lest he look with too much jealousy on those souls whose sunward flight rescues them from his ultimate domain. Those soon to enter the chrysalis burn resins and sing hymns, and one day a year is set aside in Azimuth to avert his wrath: the public buildings sweat in garments of white linen, all work stops, the citizenry take cover in their homes, and the gaze of the Oracles from the Arboretum’s pinnacle bleaches every flower with the pallor of bone and chalk.
[Pretty much all the gods had cults in the original batch from out East, thought that was in the era of Velarie’s dormancy. These are just noted as salient Sun-Diver specific things.]

Candle Shopping 🕯
First time shopping for candles and it was honestly overwhelming in the beginning cuz of the choices. There also the whole "what if the person hate the scent that I picked out?" I started out the day prior by reading reviews of different scents and types (such as the size and number of wicks).
Today, I went to 🎯 and smell each different scent for myself. It is funny that I hate most of the scent that received positive praises and ratings...especially those that were supposed to smell like Christmas trees! Holiday Spruce, Christmas Velvet, Pine & Juniper, and Balsam Fir were nasty...but I loved Prosecco Pine cuz of that fruity scent. Seriously tho, seeing the word "fir" going to make me think all candle with that name smell terrible...I originally wanted to get those scents too because it is more holiday theme. Ruby Pomander had more of a fruity vibe and Fireside Flannel give off "Netflix and Chill," but those were still way better than those fir scents...
There were flower scents such as Climbing Rose, Wildflowers, Soft Cashmere and Lavender, and Lavender Shores that turned my nose off too. The Emerald Amazon and Island Moonlight smell like men's cologne...like the scent you would pick up from a guy that you ready to have have sex with...like for real, not bad scents just seem like more of a romantic scent for a man who about to get down with a lady. Another typical scent were those that smell like fresh laundry such as the Driftwood & Sea Salt, Crystal Flora, Cerulean Surf and Sea, and Coastal Linen. It was not bad or anything, just did not seem special. Like Water Mint and Eucalyptus was the most basic scent that was there cuz it come come off as something you would smell after you come out of the shower...
I was mostly attracted to the fruity scents, but I did not wanted to pick out a scent that give off a tropical vibe... instead, I tried to pick out scents that would smell sweet yet not too overbearing cuz the Cookie Exchange smell very good, but someone mentioned it was very overbearing. I agree. There were also scents that I would assume would leave ashy smell in the end, such as Ashwood & Palo Santo, Charcoal & Black Teak, and Almond Croissant. Anyway, ended up buying a total of six candles. The scents that I brought for $6 each excited me because the ones that I picked out did not have any left, so must be lucky and huge hits! Even though initially, I was kind of upset at myself for letting a lady take the last $6 Red Mandarin & Guava! Like I did not know what scents I liked, so I put all the ones that I liked to aside...and I didn't bring a basket with me...after I saw that grab, I held on tight to the other scents...but it wasn't a major loss cuz I did end up deciding that I didn't want to pick something too fruity cuz it would been too tropical.
Then, I went to the other location cuz I needed to buy some ham and it wasn't available in that location. I already brought the candles, but I was curious to see which scents were in this location. For some reasons, this location never have as much variety compared to the location in the South Loop. (Even for Halloween treats this year, I could not find any party favors that were toys.)
Well, I was also curious about which Astrology candle I would like the best I decided on Gemini and looked at the scent, which did consisted of jasmine. Of course, I like tea so that prob why I like that scent cuz its smell the most natural without being too overpowering. It took me a lot of back and forth sniffing, especially deciding between Gemini and Libra. The Scorpio and Aries had such a strong overpowering scent. Virgo was the same, just took me awhile to smell the scent so it was very subtle. I remember Leo, Cancer, and Sagittarius were smelling fruity and sweet, but that smell did come off a bit artificial Pisces was more natural, just too basic tho...like it needed a little bit of something and I understand the intention of it just being simple cuz that tied in with the sign itself. Taurus, Aquarius, and Capricorn were simple too, yet had a bit of something to them. Still, I liked that the Gemini was a perfect balance of smelling natural without being too simple and not overpowering too. It must really has something to do with their twins symbolism.
Of course, burning the candles and smelling the scent is prob a whole different story. My judgement is based on my nose. I remember my nose being overwhelmed, which is why I had to do multiple smell tests and staying in that aisle longer than anyone who were also buying candles.

Tropical Storm Trami causes severe flooding and landslides in the Philippines, leaving at least 24 dead.
A tropical storm triggered widespread flooding and landslides in the northeastern Philippines on Thursday, resulting in at least 24 fatalities, sweeping away cars, and forcing authorities to deploy motorboats to rescue trapped villagers, some of whom were stranded on rooftops.

In response, the government shut down schools and non-essential offices across the entire main island of Luzon for a second day to protect millions, following Tropical Storm Trami’s arrival in the northeastern province of Isabela after midnight.
The storm—referred to locally as Kristine—was passing over Aguinaldo town in Ifugao province after dawn, with sustained winds reaching 95 kph (59 mph) and gusts up to 160 kph (99 mph). It was moving westward and was expected to enter the South China Sea later on Thursday, according to state forecasters.

At least 24 people have died, mainly from drowning in the severely impacted Bicol region and nearby Quezon province. However, the toll is expected to rise as flood-isolated towns and villages, with roads blocked by landslides and fallen trees, manage to report damages, according to police and provincial officials.
Most of the fatalities were in the six-province Bicol region, southeast of Manila, where at least 20 people lost their lives, including seven residents in Naga City, which was hit by flash floods as Tropical Storm Trami approached on Tuesday. The storm dumped more than two months’ worth of rain in just 24 hours during high tide, according to regional police chief Brig. Gen. Andre Dizon and other officials.
While thousands of villagers trapped in floodwaters have already been rescued by government forces, many more remained in need of rescue on Thursday in the Bicol region, with some still stranded on rooftops. Approximately 1,500 police officers have been deployed to support disaster response efforts, Dizon added.
“We can’t rescue everyone at once due to the sheer number of people and the need for more motorboats,” Dizon told The Associated Press by phone. “We’re finding ways to deliver food and water to those who are trapped but cannot be evacuated immediately.”
