Breaking Down The Biz Part 1/3: Hit Men by Fredric Dannen
May 5, 2020 by Matt Derraugh
"Ultimately, the chain of events and cast of characters chronicled in Hit Men is an excellent and entertaining resource for any artist, industry official or general music enthusiast who really wants to know the ins and outs of what the business was like at its peak. As mentioned earlier, it’s important that one gets an authentic grasp of the industry’s past to comprehend its present and future. The truth is, it wasn’t all gold and platinum, at times it was more silver or lead. It’s no secret that many music industry execs have been greedy megalomaniacs and crooks, an archetype that negatively colours the business to this day. Still, perhaps things have changed for the better since the early 1990s for all the parties involved. Part 2 will determine if that is indeed the case."

Hit Men: Power Brokers and Fast Money Inside the Music Business
July 16, 2022 "Copiously researched and documented, Hit Men is the highly controversial portrait of the pop music industry in all its wild, ruthless glory: the insatiable greed and ambition; the enormous egos; the fierce struggles for profits and power; the vendettas, rivalries, shakedowns, and payoffs. Chronicling the evolution of America's largest music labels from the Tin Pan Alley days to the present day, Fredric Dannen examines in depth the often venal, sometimes illegal dealings among the assorted hustlers and kingpins who rule over this multi-billion-dollar business."

Breaking Down The Biz Part 2/3: How Music Got Free by Stephen Witt
By Matt Derraugh | May 29, 2020
"Just like any good movie, novel or TV show, nothing in this very real story can be chalked up to coincidence."

Breaking Down The Biz 3/3: The Song Machine by John Seabrook
By Matt Derraugh | June 19, 2020
There’s several cogs to this beast, all working (no pun intended) in concert to unendingly churn out product that will satiate the masses and ideally earn the creators, the performer and the label alike a handsome sum.
Like Hit Men and How Music Got Free, The Song Machine is a superb education on the internal affairs of the popular music industry, particularly for anyone who religiously listens to hits radio and follows the pop stars that grace it. It’s also an invaluable resource to anyone wanting to get into the pop business as a performer, producer, writer, or any other of the plethora of roles to play as to what this line of work truly entails, who pioneered it and who runs it behind the scenes. It’s truly enlightening to see how only a few people can accomplish and create so much in a single field (not counting all the additional help), and how much wizardry goes into making a product that seems so simple and straightforward. Whether you’re a pop fan or not, what John Seabrook presents in The Song Machine is compelling and inspiring: Bringing a system that seems immense and larger than life down to humanity by showing the valves of its beating heart, and having imparted that knowledge making it seem possible for anyone to achieve great success within it themselves.

i’m such a whore for jaw-dropping, heavily stylized, thematically laden, full of heart animation. will forever be impressed at the stories that are coming from non-disney studios having their moment to shine.

other variations of the “Tell me, Godly one, do you crave more?” drawing thing 💥💥💥
(while drawing it, many things were added but then taken away in the whole process of things. so here are the cooler ones that still deserve a spot 💕)
