06/07/2024-Mute Swan, views and meadowsweet which it was great to see so much of a beautiful plant on a walk from Bishopstoke along the River Itchen and Jackdaw at home
The walk from Bishopstoke is one I've done for as long as I remember a key one we did in my childhood alongside other spots along the Itchen navigation like Shawford and Otterbourne, often walking from Bishopstoke to Shawford passing the Otterbourne areas on the way; but for one reason and another I've had my longest hiatus of doing this walk having not done it since June 2021 so it was great to re-connect with it today. Not long after I last walked there I saw a Chris Packham documentary 'The Walk that Made Me' where he walked along the Itchen which took in the area we went today so I found myself similarly to him reflecting on how this walk shaped me today. On the lovely walk I also enjoyed seeing Kestrel really well, Moorhens, Swift, House Martin, Blackcap, marsh woundwort, silverweed cinquefoil, forget-me-not, purple loosestrife, hogweed, herb-Robert, wood avens, demoiselles, Red Admiral and great views of Large Skipper.

Chapter 1
Jamie Shawford
“No, Marty McClaren. I said no. I can’t go on about some tennis racket that I’ve never even heard of,” Jamie Shawford groaned into the phone. The life of a famous tennis player was rough, said no one ever.
She stood just outside an exclusive indoors tennis court with her favorite racket tucked under her right arm, and the phone against her ear. Jamie was dressed in short cut white shorts, and a matching shirt with blue trim. It was among one of her favorite outfits to train in, and she specifically chose it when practicing indoors. The glass she was leaning on pounded occasionally when tennis balls hit against the other side, a sign that the other players were still practicing.
“It’s the perfect time to make people hear of it,” Marty argued back. “Plenty of rackets owe all their fame to a tennis player. It's three sentences, please cut me a break.” Marty was practically begging. Marty McClaren was the ever capable manager. Jamie relied on her not only in a professional way, but in a friendship way as well. Jamie was pretty sure when they were both old and gray, they’d still be friends.
“I just don’t have it in me to lie like that.” Jamie was laughing now. The exasperation spilled over in Jamie’s voice and she was well aware of it. Marty rarely begged for anything.
Jamie was sure Marty had more to say, but before she got another argument in, Jamie’s phone buzzed with another incoming call. Jamie pondered the caller I.D. for a moment before deciding to pick it up. Jamie set down her racket and switched the phone over to her right ear.
“Marty, my brother is calling. I’ll call you back in a few.” Jamie didn’t wait to hear Marty’s response back before clicking the accept button. There were a few grand moments of silence before one of her youngest brothers spoke.
“Jamie, it’s Andy.” There was a pause. “Dad- dad passed away last night. I just thought you should know.” Andy’s voice was quiet. Andy and Jamie had never been close. With almost a fifteen year age gap between them, Andy had barely been able to speak before Jamie got kicked out of the Shawford house for good.
Jamie couldn’t form the words she needed. Couldn’t manage to even get out a lousy “I’m sorry for your loss”. Because it wasn’t her loss, was it? She spent years wishing for that man’s death. She wasn’t upset about their father dying because he had never really been a father, had he? Not to her, at least. No, Jamie wasn’t sad. She just was shot speechless.
“I’ll come home.” Jamie finally managed to choke out. For all the days she wished that man would drink himself into a grave, Jamie never actually thought it would happen.
Daniel Shawford
As far as allnighters go, Daniel set the record for the longest time spent awake and simultaneously working on a thirty six page essay at six days. Granted, intermittent naps and coffee breaks were allotted, but rare.
In the back of Daniel’s mind, he thought about scrapping this crappy idea and rewriting an essay about why no one should ever stay up this long. Or better yet, why procrastination was the only real sin in this world.
Daniel rubbed his eyes. His brain was fogging up with undeserved sleep as he stood to brew another pot of shitty coffee. If he had known double majoring was going to be this hard, Daniel would have stayed at home like his younger brothers.
Once the coffee machine was doing its job, he popped the fridge open and peered inside. Daniel hadn’t eaten food in quite a while. There was no time to waste eating. With drinking coffee, he could type one handedly at the same time. Eating? No such luck. He spotted his roommate's energy drink in the back corner, and muttered darkly to himself as he pulled it out.
The coffee machine dinged to alarm Daniel it was finished doing it’s duty for humanity, and Daniel poured himself half a cup in an old mountain dew bottle, and then cracked the energy drink open and poured the other half into the bottle.
“If I die, I die.” Daniel shrugged and quickly downed the coffee-energy drink mess. There was truly no taste like it, but Daniel was too tired to taste anything but the bitter black coffee. He missed those stupid sugar coffee drinks he couldn’t afford anymore. After chugging an entire bottle of the forbidden mix, Daniel felt ready to sit down again and continue hating ever word he added to this stupid essay.
Daniel checked the date. It was officially May 6th, 4:22. It was due in four hours and he still needed another four pages to meet minimum requirements. And Daniel hadn’t even edited or read over a single word written yet. This teacher was going to have a field day with his paper. But turning in whatever crap he wrote was better than getting a zero for not doing it at all. At least, that’s what Daniel told himself.
His phone rang and startled Daniel off his chair. It was so loud in the silent dorm room that he had jumped out of his skin because of it. On the way down, he cracked his forehead against the arm of his chair, and let out a string of unprotected cuss words. Daniel grappled for the phone as he helped himself up.
“Andy? It’s four in the morning. Are you okay?” There had been a few times in the past that Andy or Ryan had called and needed a place to stay. Usually they called Matt though. He was much closer than Daniel was. It would always be alarming for his youngest twin brothers to call him at such an hour. Daniel had college friends who called him at all hours of the night, but none would worry him like this. Daniel knew their father, and knew their history.
“Is Matt not picking up his phone? I can come and get you.” Daniel really couldn’t come get them, but he’d call Matt until he picked up the damn phone. He was probably staying over at Patricks… Daniel shook the thought from his mind.
“No…” Andy’s voice was shaky. “It’s dad. He-” Andy sniffled a bit. Daniel shot up from his chair. It was partly fueled by anger, but most of that energy came from his crazy coffee concoction.
“Did he hurt you?” Daniel practically bellowed into the phone. Personally, Daniel had never been hit by his father. But all the blood drained from his face when he remembered how his drunk father beat up Matt for being gay. Or Jamie… for being a she instead of a he.
“No, Daniel,” Andy said almost exasperated. He was talking through tears now. “He’s dead. He died and mom doesn’t want you to know. Or Jamie, or Matt even.” Andy was whispering into the phone now, like he didn’t want anyone to know he was talking on it. It clicked in Daniel’s mind.
Andy was calling his older brothers to tell them what happened because their mother wouldn’t. Daniel wasn’t sure how to take this news. He was numb, really. What else was he supposed to feel? He stared at the unfinished essay that had stolen six nights of good rest from him. Was God finally taking pity on him?
Once off the phone with Andy, Daniel formatted an email to his professor saying he was unable to finish the essay because of his father’s death. He requested a week of extra time and promised to finish it by then.
And then, unceremoniously, he closed the laptop and passed out in his chair.
Matt Shawford
Matt Shawford was suffering through yet another family lunch at the Colgait house. Lunches were a ritual for the Colgaits in a way Matt had never seen a family do before. Not that he was complaining though… lunch is the best. In-laws are the best. Sometimes.
But right now? They were freaking him out.
“Well when you get married, you’re going to hyphen your names, right? Shawford-Colgait is nice, isn’t it?” It wasn’t. But Mrs. Colgait, Patrick’s mother, was undeterred by Matt’s unnerved expression. Jonathan Colgait Senior cut in.
“when you adopt, will the kid get to share the hyphenated names? Or hyphen with its original last name? That’s a lot of names there.” Jonathan Senior was as old as the hills, but managed to be more open-minded than most people in this town alone. Jonathan Senior sees family values as the most important part of his life, and the rest of the Colgaits believed that too.
The problem is, Matt isn’t ready for those kinds of talks. He isn’t ready to discuss kids. Hell, Matt was barely able to say yes to Patrick when he asked Matt to marry him. Matt worries about everything. What if his father comes out of his five year silence to stop the wedding? What if getting married at twenty three is too early? What if he decides he doesn’t want kids and becomes a huge disappointment to both his family and Patricks? The panic must have been evident because Patrick gripped his hand under the table.
“We’re not really ready to-”
“I won’t hyphen. I’m taking the Colgait name when we marry,” Matt paused, as if he were only just now remembering his manners. “If that’s okay with you.” He added. His declaration seemed to shock everyone, even himself. Jonathan senior choked on one of the roasted carrots. He beat his hand against his chest as he struggled to catch his breath.
“Are my ears hard of hearing,” Jonathan senior coughed and beat his chest with his fist again, “or did you just say you're giving up your father's name?” Jonathan Colgait slammed his hand against the table as if he were disgusted by the idea. Even if Jonathan Senior was open-minded, he didn’t approve of such effeminate behavior.
“You are your father’s son. A man. It’s not right to give up your family name.” Jonathan Senior admonished. Jonathan Junior, Patrick’s father, cleared his throat. Matt was sure he was going to step in and defend him. Matt couldn’t have that.
“I’d be honored to take the Colgait name any day over my father’s. If he were even half the man you are sir, I might have considered a hyphen.” That’s the proper amount of ass-kissing to give to your father-in-laws parents. Patrick’s grandfather looked thoughtfully at Matt, and then smiled a yellow toothed smile.
Matt Shawford hated his surname. It said he was related to his father, and Matt didn’t want anything to link him to that man. His father’s son? Matt would rather die. If there was one thing Matt promised never to become, it was him. And since he was technically kicked out of his home, Matt technically didn’t have to keep his father’s last name. That might have been the best thing about getting married - other than the lovely man at his side squeezing his hand reassuringly. Someday soon, He’d be Matt Colgait, married to Patrick Colgait of Colgait and Sons Organic Farms Co.
Jonathan senior set down his fork like he no longer needed to wield it like a pitchfork. He sat quietly, glaring a whole into the nice white table cloth. Perhaps the ass-kissing Matt offered really did a number on the old man.
“Your daddy…” The old man paused. He looked a hundred years older as he chose his next words carefully. “He’s a diligent worker, and strong willed, but a good man? He is not.” The rest of the family members nodded agreeably. Matt was sure Daniel and Jamie wouldn’t blame him for leaving the family name. The Shawfords valued family names like any true conservative catholic family would, but somewhere along the way, Matt had lost that. He lost the pride that made his name feel good to say aloud.
Matt smiled appreciatively before diving into his own roasted carrots. They were organic, afterall. He glanced at his phone when it started vibrating under the table. It wouldn’t look good that he brought his phone to the table with him, and decided to ignore it. Whoever it was, they’d leave a message if it was important.
Only, as soon as he declined the call from his brother, it came again. Matt glanced at the Colgait family, apologized, and stood. He took the phone call to the front porch.
“It better be important Andy!” Matt growled into the phone.
“Would I call during your all important lunch if it wasn’t?” he growled right back. But Andy’s growl and normal sarcasm cut shallow when Matt heard the crack in his voice.
“Andy? What’s wrong?” Matt switched from being angry to being concerned on a dime. It wouldn’t have been dad, right? Dad had no reason to hit Andy… but what about Ryan? Matt rubbed his temple as he started overthinking everything. Ryan struggled with talking on a normal day. What if he chose to stay silent at the wrong time and got himself hit? Matt started pacing.
“It’s dad,” Andy said slowly. Matt was about to abandon his all-important-lunch to throw himself in the way of dad’s blows. Nothing in Matt’s life was more important than his younger twin brothers. “He died yesterday night. Mom didn’t want me to tell you guys, but… you deserved to know.” Andy finished. His voice came out steady, like he’s had this conversation a million times by now. And Matt figures that he must have. Matt wondered what Jamie and Daniel’s reactions were.
“Listen, I normally wouldn’t ask this but dad usually picks us up from school on mom’s chemo days but…” Andy couldn’t finish. Matt didn’t realize he was nodding through the phone until Andy asked if he was still there.
“It’s no problem. I’ll be there.”
While Matt was panicking on the front porch, Patrick had a strong word with his family. He set down his fork, and glared up at his parents, and his grandparents. As the youngest child of the Colgait family, that glare didn’t have much of a scare factor to it.
“I told you to lay off the kid thing. He’s not ready to think about that kind of stuff yet, and honestly, neither am I.” Patrick tried to sound angry. He wasn’t, not really. Unlike the Shawford house, the Colgaits were warm, loving, and took you in any shape you turned out to be. Meaning, they didn’t care that their youngest son happened to like guys.
“We’re just trying to make sure we have grandkids. Your older brother is about as interested in marriage as that toaster over there,” Grandpa Colgait admonished. Luckily, Patrick’s older brother Johnny wasn’t here. Patrick sighed. His grandpa wanted to see grandkids before he died, and that wasn’t a lot to ask, considering. Patrick figured he would marry Matt, get their own place off the farm, and maybe, MAYBE after a few years adopt a kid. Patrick was pretty sure he couldn’t do surrogacy in any capacity. Women are scary.
“I know, but… you’re going to scare him off with talk like that.” Patrick tried to explain. The amount of effort that went into even getting Matt to date him was off the charts- not that it wasn’t worth it. Patrick loved Matt, and was glad they’d met when they did.
Matt burst through the door with the phone still to his ear. The nice clothes he wore to the nice lunch were rumpled and there was sweat on his forehead from all the worry.
“Patrick, can I borrow your car?”

Just a Wednesday (G/T Oneshot)
word count: 1171
-------
It was a pretty average Wednesday, probably the most "Wednesday" Wednesday of Dakota's life. She had practically leaped out the front doors of her high school, racing to where her friends usually would meet up, which was a huge willow tree that bordered the woods next to the school. By the tree's roots was a plague dedicated to William M. Shawford, the war hero that the school was dedicated to. Some kids believed that William roamed the halls during after-school hours because the high school was supposedly built above his graveyard. Yeah, that's totally it.
Dakota leaned against the tree, scrolling through the explore page of Instagram, a yawn escaping her lips. Her slick black hair battered against her Native skin, occasionally she would look up, glancing through her wind-tossed hair to see if any of her friends were coming.
And then something weird happened, on such a non-weird day. Wednesday was not a day for weird, it was a very ordinary (and quite forgettable) day. When she turned to look around, Dakota glanced at the woods for a second, but that was enough to see a broken tree. Most would've passed it off as maybe just a lightning strike. But there hadn't been a serious storm like this in almost a month, and the tree wasn't charred, it looked like it has just... snapped.
Dakota knew about wildlife and about the lands that gave her tribe sustenance, and she knew that trees just don't snap overnight, especially when it wasn't like that on Tuesday.
She got up from her leaning position, looking back to see if her friends had finally made it out of that prison, but they hadn't. With a sigh, Dakota walked towards the woods, tucking her phone into the side pocket of her backpack.
As she went further and further into the woods, she saw some kind of indents in the ground. Normally, Dakota wasn't one to believe in extraterrestrials, but something about how even the spaces between the indents made her skin crawl. She shakily grabbed for her phone, getting the camera app ready, her finger hovering over the "record" button.
"H-he—," Dakota attempted, but her voice got lost when she reached the end of the indentations. Something snapped to her right, and she jumped back, screaming. She had reached her wits end and started sprinting back, her Vans getting incredibly muddy.
"Oh no, I-I'm sorry, j-just wa-," a voice boomed from behind her.
Dakota turned her head halfway, and from the corner of her eye, she saw it. A giant. A scream came from her lips again as huge fingers came for her, gripping her backpack and pulling her upwards. For a split second, her feet left the ground, but Dakota twisted around, letting her arms slip from the straps and falling to the ground with a thud, her phone landing face up a couple feet away.
"Oh goodness, I'm so sorry, ple-."
Dakota crawled, grabbing her phone and turning to face the giant, who had just tucked her entire backpack into his front pocket, his other hand poised to grab her. She fumbled to type in her passcode and get to the camera app.
"W-wait! Don't record me!" The giant begged, his thumb and forefinger reaching down as fast as lightning to grab at her phone, which also pinned Dakota's hand together. She dug her heels into the ground, trying to push herself backwards, but it was a fruitless attempt, the giant easily grabbed her phone away, pulling her forwards, and put it in his pocket.
Dakota crab-crawled backwards, her eyes wide in fear. "W-wh.."
"I'm sorry."
Dakota was still shaking, her eyes wide. How was this all possible? Everything she knew was about to be thrown out the window. How many mythical creatures like these exist? In her silence, the giant had crouched down to get a better look.
"My name is Holden, can you understand me?" He said slowly, pointing to himself and talking to her as if she was stupid.
"Y-ye—," her voice failed her once again, all she could manage was a quiet squeak. Holden leaned forward, his face getting way too close to Dakota's than comfortable. She yelped, scurrying backwards.
"You're going to have to speak up, little one, I cannot hear you if you talk so quietly."
"Ye-yes, I can understand you.." Dakota said, a little bit louder. There was a pause and neither of them dared to move. Holden seemed as if he was expecting something. "M-my name's Dakota."
Seeming satisfied, the giant sat back on his heels, smiling down towards her, a kind gesture, but all Dakota could see were his teeth. "I apologize for scaring you so much, so here—," Holden fumbled through his pocket and pulled out her red backpack, handing it towards her. Dakota jumped back at first, but hesitantly walked forward, quickly grabbing the bag and hugging it to her chest.
"M-my phone?" She said expectantly, gulping down a knot of fear inside of her.
Holden was about to reach into his pocket when he looked back up at the shivering girl. "Promise not to record me, or take pictures?"
Dakota shakily nodded. Praying that her phone wasn't cracked into a million pieces. Holden reached all the way into his pocket, grabbing her phone, and pulling it slowly out, which still looked fast to Dakota. He handed the phone to Dakota, her phone looked so tiny when it was just in between two giant fingers. She quickly grabbed it, wiping the screen free of lint and dust, inspecting it for cracks. Surprisingly, he had been very gentle.
"If you're still in school, how old are you?" Holden asked gesturing towards her Kanken backpack. Dakota looked confused at first, before realizing that he was probably much older than her.
"18."
"Oh my, you looked around my age, sorry for assuming. I'm 24."
Dakota nodded slowly, looking up at the sky, seeing the sun was maybe an hour away from setting. Panic coursed through her body as she checked her phone. How had 15 minutes already gone by?
"I-I'm sorry Holden, sir, I have to get home, my parents are going to freak," Dakota spoke frantically grabbing her backpack and slinging it over her shoulders. She started to run off to the sidewalk before turning again, a nervous smile dawned on her face. "I-I'll uhh, see you around, I guess.." Dakota awkwardly said, fiddling with the phone in her hands.
"Of course, I'm not going anywhere, see you, Dakota."
Dakota didn't turn around again, because a huge blush had crept through her dark cheeks. Instead she just lifted her hand in a motionless wave, "bye, Holden."

The Artist’s House in Winchester Conservation Area
The Artist’s House is a private extension and renovation project, completed in Autumn 2021 by award-winning, Winchester based Architects AR Design Studio. This addition, located in the heart of Winchester’s Conservation Area, sought to remove a series of previous small extensions and a conservatory. In their place would be a single space that would reconnect the various components of the house and open it up to its garden.
This Grade II listed house, dating from the 18th Century, was in use as a public house until 1903. Since then, various piecemeal additions over time have masked much of the original rear elevation of the house. Through rigorous consultations with the council and their conservation officers, a design approach was developed that would strip back much of the clutter, with a new lightweight addition taking its place.
Key to this was pulling the extension away from the original rear wall of the house. A full width rooflight is used in order to bridge the gap between the two with a light connection, allowing natural light to highlight the wall and ensure that a clear distinction is made between the new and old.
An elegant roof connects the different wings of the house, enclosing the new kitchen and dining spaces below. Full height glazing opens this space out onto a new patio and the garden beyond.
The material palette used is deliberately muted to draw attention to the fabric of the original listed components of the house. Timber is used alongside aluminium fascia’s and a light grey tile to soften its appearance. This is carried between the interior and exterior spaces, keeping the number of materials to a minimum and allowing a seamless transition between the two. The original red brick and stone walls have had several past layers of paint removed to restore the appearance of the full two-storey wall and enable it to form the backdrop of the extension.
This carefully considered addition has breathed new life into this historic home. It reconnects previously disjointed elements of the house and its garden, providing a new space for modern living while respecting and enhancing its heritage.

11/04/22-Peregrine and more in Winchester and at home
It was so wonderful to get up and walk to the station this morning with the sun awakening the week by lighting everything up perfectly. I took the first picture in this photoset of a tree out the back with more greenery. I really enjoyed seeing House Sparrows in the hedge by Lakeside this morning as I often do and with my bridge camera with me was able to get some rare photos at this location of a male and a female the second and third in this photoset. Precious intimate moments with a lovely bird and I had the same with Blue Tits shining brightly on the way in too.
Plant wise little delights of green alkanet, beautiful ground ivy, white and red deadnettle and cow parsley and great trees going green including birch which I am noticing everywhere at the moment with lovely blossom looking brilliant against a bright blue sky and in the sun was great to see.
In Winchester at lunch time and on the way in and out doing a lunch time walk taking in St. Thomas Church and the nice area near with lots of daffodils I discovered last week, Winchester Cathedral, Abbey Gardens and the river Itchen had some great floral sightings, lots of forget-me-not including looking great next to other highlight ivy-leaved toadflax which I took the seventh picture in this photoset of, lots of green alkanet, many lovely bluebells, tulips, daffodils, spurge, speedwell one I hadn’t seen much of here before, lesser celandine, probable budle, possible pitcher plant, dandelion type flower, hyacinths, a gem of a snowflake by the river a really great and pretty one to see and others looked fantastic. So much bright colour with bits of blossom and growth looking great too looking especially stunning in the sunlight. I took the fourth picture in this photoset of a church by the railway station this morning with the stained glass windows shining nicely and looking colourful, fifth of the area by St. Thomas Church with a few of the daffodils still going and sixth of the river Itchen.
I saw William the male Peregrine last Wednesday lunch time on a day I didn’t have my camera at the top of the cathedral but not Thursday or passing by the cathedral on the way to the river today the second of the days together this month I committed to bringing my bridge camera in my work bag. Walking back at the end of my lunch I thought my chance was gone for a Peregrine picture on these two days and I don’t think I would have done a special extra visit with the camera later in the month even if I saw him consistently, not least because I was so fortunate to see so much of both the Peregrines in the flesh and take a lot of photos of them in the two days I brought my bridge camera in March . And I was expecting I might not get to photograph a Peregrine this month in Winchester as the next few weeks in the breeding season it’s not common to see the Peregrines in person if you just walk past in a day as I do as Winnie is incubating the eggs in the ledge out of view expect for the webcam.
But I was amazed when passing the cathedral on the way back to the office today I saw the majestic and smart coated William upon the north tower ledge. I was immensely excited to be looking at a Peregrine, and I got some photos including the eighth and ninth in this photoset. I felt I was in bonus territory to get a photo of a Peregrine this month, and if I was being greedy the photos I got of him were from an angle I’d got of them in past years but didn’t feel I had yet this year with him facing out on the ledge. So with the hybrid working system from February and an essential cover rota day before that I feel I have got an extensive set of Peregrine pictures this year already on various points at Winchester Cathedral and St. Thomas Church. It was so amazing to see this bird and as if by magic as I took the first of the photos the sun that had gone behind clouds a little by that point reappeared.
I have really enjoyed taking all sorts of photos in my two April bridge camera office days to support the spring time photos I am currently taking all the time, but the Peregrines on Winchester Cathedral were the first and are the ultimate subject when I put my bridge camera in my work bag for a day in the office. So the list maker in me is thrilled that this is a box ticked, an item crossed off. I look forward in the few office days I have left this month as I am on leave at the end of April, to now potentially just enjoying seeing William and following them both and particularly seeing Winnie on the webcam. This evening I enjoyed seeing a silver-sided sector spider the regular one the other side of the window in the middle level which I took a photo of with my macro lens and tweeted and a little micro moth flying around the living room. There were nice sky scenes with interesting cloud formations and a little bit of pink sky and green scenes at home this evening as there was this morning, I took the tenth picture in this photoset of such a view with the nice tree looking good as well.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: Two of my favourite birds the Peregrine Falcon and Buzzard with the latter seen over Shawford railway station on the way home, Starling, House Sparrow, Blue Tit, Robin well, Jackdaw well at the cathedral, Magpie and Carrion Crow at home tonight, Woodpigeon, Mallard and Grey Wagtail the other key Winchester bird this set of bridge camera working days was a success for on Thursday and it was nice to see last Wednesday too sat together on a piece of land in the river a unique sight for me, Mute Swan further down the river on the train journey home, silver-sided sector spider, moth and I heard Greylag Geese and saw their shadows as they flew over home this morning and had similar with Starlings and possibly heard a Pied Wagtail too.

The Shawfords by M.k. Elford
The Shawfords are as far from a well-kept family as they can be. Three of the five children were kicked out for being gay, trans, or even just supporting a liberal president candidacy. The other two are twins who live in constant fear of their very drunken father, and worry over their mother as she goes through chemotherapy treatments to combat breast cancer. All of that changes when their father gets in a car accident and dies. Imagine their mothers surprise when she finds all five uninvited children at the funeral.
- A “pride” and true Country Soap Opera-
Each character has a different story to tell, and a different reality to live in the small country town known as Dilly, Texas.

AR Design Studio Receive Planning for ‘Glade House’
Glade House in Surrey, Southern England
Description
Planning approval has been received for ‘Glade House’, a bespoke contemporary 5-bed family home by award winning, Winchester based Architects AR Design Studio. Sat within a clearing in a woodland plot, this replacement dwelling seeks to integrate the architecture with the landscape, giving equal consideration to both interior and exterior space.
The layout of the proposal has been conceived to follow the natural axes of the site. The ground floor comprises of four brick walls that align with these axes and reach out into the plot, giving a distinction between the public and private. This establishes individual gardens that are tailored to the interior spaces of the house that spill out onto them. Full height glazing is used throughout the ground floor, allowing a seamless transition between inside and out.
At first floor, four timber clad volumes sit atop the brick walls and accommodate the bedrooms. These nestle amongst the canopies of the mature trees with views to the gardens.
Where these volumes meet at the centre of the house, a double height void is proposed. This is capped with a rooflight that floods the centre of the house and the main entrance hall with natural light, linking each of the main spaces together at the heart of the home.
The result is a one-off contemporary design. It enhances the architectural distinctiveness of the area whilst blending into the verdant context, creating conditions for the building and its site to thrive in the future. AR Design Studio are thrilled to receive the decision and looks forward to starting the build later this year.
