There is a new issue of Kolaj Magazine!
Kolaj is a quarterly, printed, 10"x8" art magazine featuring reviews and surveys of contemporary collage. The magazine takes an international perspective on collage as a medium, a genre, a community, and a 21st century art movement.

INSIDE THE ISSUE
In On attrape bien les followers avec des likes (We Are Good at Catching Followers with Likes), this issue’s cover image, a tiny man watches a boy who watches a man holding a sign with an Instagram like on it. Two women gaze from a distance. A sign in the back says, “Believe Me”. The collage is a commentary on how social media fights for our attention, devotion, and patronage. A portfolio of SLip‘s collage appears in the issue.
In the issue editorial, Ric Kasini Kadour asks what happens when a work of art becomes detached from the artist, orphaned, unidentified? “Lost Collages” considers those artworks found in attics and thrift shops, divorced from their maker.
In the issue’s round up of News & Notes, we report on Canadian collage artist Rhonda Barrett who opened Cuts & Paste Gallery in Halifax, Nova Scotia in January 2023 and Alicia Saadi‘s billboard installation in New Brunswick, New Jersey. (Saadi recently took part in Kolaj Institute’s Collage as Street Art Residency.)
In “The Abbondanza of Order & Chaos,” Austin, Texas collage artist Lance Letscher shares his idea of good art: “Not to fall into a cliché, but if the work transcends itself, it becomes something bigger or more complex, or more intricate, or more interesting or more curiosity provoking, then it’s more than the sum of its parts: it’s a successful piece of artwork.” Check out or interview with this legend.
“I came to poetry by accident…Which brought me to collage,” writes Kim Triedman in “The Poetics of Collage.” The Massachusetts artist and award-winning author recalls her journey and how poetry and collage mingle in her practice.
Anna Rémuzon explores the subtle, vibrant meeting of Expressionism, Surrealism & Pop Culture in the artwork of Czech artist Tomáš Jetela in “A Rare Hallucination of Reality…Defragmented.” Rémuzon writes, “The characters are fragmented, detached pieces. The faces, the articulated bodies, the accessories—each element has its own origin, its own identity. Jetela ‘glues’ them together in his composition, which creates a new, mutant form of humanity.”
Steven Specht, Ph.D., NCS picks up on Mark Vargo’s article about AI art that appeared in the previous issue in “Art, artifacts, & authenticity: The Problem of De-coupling Process from Product.” He writes, “As a medium, collage lends itself to being mimicked by computer generative algorithms. But I would argue that any generative AI process represents nothing close to the authentic experiences that Kyle [Riecker], or I, or any other collage artist experiences in the process of creating art—even if the process itself is chaotic.”
“The Art of Joy” reports on The University of Colorado Collecting of Frances Joy Bradbury’s COVID-19 project. The artist worked with curator Tyler Alpern, a longtime artist friend, to turn the collection into a book which presents a sample of the collages the artist made every day during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.
Evelyn Rapin shows us ekphrasis in reverse in “The Secret Life of Plants.” She writes, “Experimentation, chance and accident are huge elements to be embraced in collage assembly.”
In “Southern Axis,” Ric Kasini Kadour writes, “History is always approached on an axis, a through line that guides the narrative. Art History is no different. Traditionally, art history is viewed through an academic lens looking at the evolution of painting and sculpture. A premise of Kolaj Magazine and Institute is that when we turn the axis of art history to collage, the traditional canon opens up to greater diversity.” Kadour reviews the 20th Anniversary Exhibition at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art with an eye to how collage challenges our view of the art history canon.

My Ten Favorite Characters on “Legends of Tomorrow”
The Rules: This characters were sorted by personal preference of course, which is always subjective. However the general rules wer: How well a character is written, how they come to life through the actor and the various directors, how big the impression that character makes was and how interesting and coherent they were. A character does not need to be sympathic to score high on this list, however if they are just annoying me they won’t score high. For this list only „Legends of Tomorrow“ characters qualified, Crossover character were excluded . Love can not be measured ony with stupid lists like this one. If someone is not on it, that does not mean I don’t like them (unless it does). Everyone ist entiteled to their own opinion, so please respect mine and don’t reblog or answer to that just to tell me how wrong mine is.
10. Martin Stein
Actor: Victor Garber, Graeme McComb, S1-3
„Thank you Jefferson for the aventures of a liftime. I hope your life is long and full of love. Just as mine has been.“
9. Amaya Jiwe (Vixen)
Actress: Masie Richardson-Sellers, S2-3
„I choose to protect people from those who would prey upon them."
8. Leonard Snart (Captain Cold)
Actor: Wenworth Miller, Earth 1- Version, S1-2

7. Zari Tomaz
Actress: Tala Ashe, S3-5

6. John Constantine
Actor: Matt Ryan, S3-5
„You see, I'm an accomplished warlock, an expert of the occult, and a master of exorcism. I'm also a Taurus, for those of you taking notes.“
5. Eobard Thawne (Reverse Flash)
Actor: Matt Letscher, Tom Cavanagh, S2-3
„The inner workings of the medallion are lost to history. Trying to get it to reveal its secrets will prove difficult, plus we have an additional advantage over them […] They're idiots.“

Bart Chat 3/27
Hi all, So let me start with information on the memorial service for Andy Anderson. It will be Saturday, April 1st at 2:00 PM at Red’s Road House (redsroadhouse.com) You might imagine that this will not be your ordinary memorial service. I’ll see you there. So this Thursday, we begin the spring film festival season. We have the Dallas International Film Festival at several places around town, followed by the New Earth X Film Festival on April 19-23rd, which is part of Earth Day Dallas and programmed by Michael Cain, formally of DIFF and Deep Ellum film festival. That very same weekend up in Denton, Texas (home of Brave Combo) is the Thin Line Festival. The Thin Line has a new policy of providing all programs for free, which is very cool. Thin Line specializes in documentary (formally the thin line between narrative and documentary) but it now includes photography and music, as well. But wait, there is more! Thin Line is followed by the USA Film Festival April 26-April 30. So, what have we been doing here at the Video Association? The Dallas Medianale, the ultra cool video art/experimental film/ performance event is coming up. Last time, nobody knew what a medianale was or how to pronounce it, but now, hopefully, ya know. It will be April 27th through the 30th at The Texas Theater, the Dallas Contemporary and the MAC. There will be a tribute to a historic experimental filmmaker, some live video and performance, short experimental work and a special showing. More details will be coming very soon and then right after that, we have the 24 Hour Video Race on May 12-13th, with the screenings afterwards. By the way, I am interested to know your opinion on a discussion we were having with our board. Our organization is called the Video Association of Dallas, but most of you know us as VideoFest. When I say Video Association of Dallas, do you know what I am talking about? What would you prefer: Dallas VideoFest presents Medianale OR Video Association of Dallas presents Medianale? If you have some thoughts on this, I would love to hear them at [email protected]. Let’s do the, what is playing in theaters quickly, so we can get to DIFF. The Big Movie at the Magnolia on Tuesday is Roger and Me. I have no idea how I would feel watching this with what is going on currently, as it would probably feel surreal. At The Texas, they have a cool way for local filmmakers to get their film in their festival, with Show us Your Shorts night on Thursday night. On April 1st, grand master Barak, has a real treat for us. He is showing Barry Lyndon in 35 mm with a live overture and intermission! How cool is that? However, this is the same day as Andy’s memorial service and DIFF. Well, when is comes to film festivals you always have to make tough choices. Also on Thursday, Ghost in the Shell screens at The Alamo. As I said before, Thursday opens the Dallas International Film Festival and there is so much to see, I don’t know where to begin. But here are a few things I know. First, Christian Vasquez will be showing his Divided Together again on 4/8 at 4:30. Another film that was also shown at our festival is Audible Static by the great Sai Selvarajan. This is his best film yet, and I am a fan. The area high school and college showcases are always great to see. You should also check out the Secret life of Lance Letscher, which is the first film directed by Richard Linklater’s editor Sandra Adair. DIFF is showing quite a few films from 1967, which is a trend started by the Oak Cliff boys. The opening night film from that era is Bonnie and Clyde, which was a kind of indie milestone. Aside from the great directing and performances, the editing in that last, very violent scene is classic. Seeing it on the big screen at the performance hall should be compelling. Cassette, a doc mix tape, sounds interesting as does City of Ghosts and The Function of Music (fans of Radio Lab need to show up for this.) The Honor Farm got some good buzz at SXSW and the Last City of Z and Manashe should be seen. The Honor Farm got some buzz at SXSW, the last City of Z should be seen, I have heard good things about Mr. Roosevelt and seeing Pete’s Dragon with David Lowery in attendance will be a cool experience. I have also heard good things about Spentacolo and Someone at SXSW had great things to say about Delt. So, there are some suggestions. There are also the films that we are co-sponsoring like David Holzmans’s Diary by LM Kit Carson. I knew about this film long before I met Kit. Back in the day, I made this film called the Joycelyn Shrager Story (a film about a filmmaker) and when it played in the festival circuit, it was often compared to David Holtzman’s Diary, which I took as a compliment. Other films we are sponsoring are Berlin Syndrome, which I have not seen but should be good, and since we just had the German film series, it seems like a great idea. We also are co-presenting I Have Seen, Frantz, a beautiful and well directed black and white film. Forever Pure, a film about a Soccer in Israel, is not about athletics, but racism. Racism that could have happened anywhere, but it just so happens that it is in Israel as very right wing groups back a team that makes the mistake of getting a player from Bosnia, which does not go well. So, there you have it. Have a great week. Bart Weiss Video Association of Dallas Artistic Director

THE SECRET LIFE OF LANCE LETSCHER REVIEWED
“The Secret Life of Lance Letscher” is a serious look at an artist’s methods. Lance Letscher is a collage artist who has a bigger footprint abroad rather than in America. The film features the most detailed footage of his work, but that almost feels secondary. Watching as Letscher divorces himself from conscious thought to create blindly is rather…
