MR. BUNGLE MELVINS ☆ SPOTLIGHTS ★ The Showbox, Seattle
Photo Review by Chris Schanz
One might ask what would bring me out of retirement? Was I retired? What the hell have I been doing for the past three years? All things Doomed and Stoned have been in flux for me. I’ve been focusing on my day job. I’ve been focusing on my family. I’ve been focusing on my garden. All this focusing has left me nearsighted. Blurry. The COVID era left me with a shitty hangover (not long COVID – I’m just trying to forget that shit and move on!). Sure – I’ve shot shows, band portraits, weddings, funerals yadda yadda fucking yadda. I wanted a sign that the universe is ready for my gifts, once again.
Enter Mr. Bungle and The Melvins. The Geek Show Tour, sponsored by Ipecac Records celebrates both the vast accomplishments of Mike Patton (Faith No More, Fantomas, Mr. Bungle) and The Melvins – on their 40th anniversary! The perfect lure to get me off my ass and feel like I actually can contribute something to music, art and photography in general without licking the taint of Instagram and an AI-generated algorithmic overlord soon set to devour us, Titans, Gods and all.
The Showbox at the Market is the perfect set. I feel at home there, usually right by the soundboard. So many shows seen there – Sonic Youth, Nudedragons (Soundgarden), Brothers Of the Sonic Cloth, Sleep, Uncle Acid, Bell Witch, Graveyard, Chelsea Wolfe, The Black Angels – on and on, and on and on. It’s by far Seattle’s best concert hall, IMHO.
SPOTLIGHTS
I admit. I wasn’t prepared for Spotlights. A buddy of mine in Denver by way of San Francisco said they’re sweetly DOOMY. I was in. I got three songs to fall in love. Head over heels! Words escape my brain, only memories of sweet, subsonic joy flowing through my chest and brain. I followed up with Sarah Quintenero after the show at the merch booth, loading up on their vinyl. I’m blasting “Tidals” on vinyl while writing this in my cave, but “Alchemy for the Dead” is a MASTERPIECE! I’ve been binging on their Bandcamp all week now. Bold, deep bass fuzz, ethereal vocals and serrated guitar riffs. My new summer soundtrack.
They’re still on tour – and I highly advise you to see them now!
Alchemy For The Dead by Spotlights
Spotlights Setlist
"The Alchemist" (2023’s Alchemy For The Dead)
"Sunset Burial" (2023’s Alchemy For The Dead)
"Algorithmic" (2023’s Alchemy For The Dead)
"False Gods" (2023’s Alchemy For The Dead)
"Part 4" (2020’s We Are All Atomic)
MELVINS
This brings me back to the Melvins. The force that shaped my twenties in Seattle. My band Fuzzbud had a six-degrees-of-Kevin Bacon thing with a Morton, WA / Monteseno, WA, somebody’s cousin played in a band that opened for…whatevs. We tuned to DUH flat and had a good time. BUT…The Melvins were always a mainstay in any of my playlists.
King Buzzo did NOT disappoint! I was singing along from the photo pit. I was kidding beforehand that there should be some sort of SNL skit – a play by play commentary of the photo pit action. Think Howard Cosell announcing each of the photogs falling over each other for the shots. I thought it was funny, anyways. I’m a dork.
ANYWHOO. Buzzo provides! Dale’s a GOD. I got my HEALTHY fix of Houdini, culminating in a THREE BASS OVERLOAD on Night Goat with Sara Qintenero from Spotlights and Trevor Dunn from Mr. Bungle joining Steve McDonald to rumble your bunghole. What did I miss by NOT seeing the tour finale in San Francisco? A reunion of Fantomas (Mike, Buzz and Dave Lombardo)! When these guys get together, (black) magic always happens!
The Bride Screamed Murder by Melvins
Melvins Setlist
"I Can’t Shake It" (1998 split with Cosmic Psychos, Some Girls/I Can’t Shake It)
"Zodiac" (1990’s Bullhead)
"Copache" (1993’s Houdini)
"I Want to Hold Your Hand" (2018’s Pinkus Abortion Technician - Beatles Cover)
"Hammering" (2022’s Bad Mood Rising)
"Never Say You’re Sorry" (2022’s Bad Mood Rising)
"Evil New War God" (2010’s The Bride Screamed Murder)
"Let It All Be" (1999’s The Bootlicker)
"Honey Bucket" (1993’s Houdini)
"Revolve" (1994’s Stoner Witch)
"Night Goat" (1993’s Houdini - with Steve McDonald, Spotlights Sarah Quintero and Mr. Bungle bass Trevor Dunn on basses)
MR. BUNGLE
The main event. I knew they led with the Mr. Rogers theme on most nights. ADORABLE! But to my surprise, and delight! They performed the John Sebastian theme to “Welcome Back Kotter”! FUCK YES. I’m a Sweathog and everyone knows it! We would also be treated to the Pepto Bismol jingle not too far into the set.
I was wanting, wishing for a few more songs from 1991’s Mr. Bungle release, primarily some “Squeeze Me Macaroni” and “Stubb-A-Dub” action. Stubb was my go-to track in our house in college. After many a trip, I believed I was the proverbial “family dog” to our tribe…just elated to be along for the ride scrambling from party to party. Luckily for me, I got some “My Ass Is On Fire” and I was satiated. “Speak Spanish Or Die” brought me right back to my thrash and skating days (Days. Rolled my ankle on the half-pipe and drove the crew to all the spots after that). Van Halen’s Loss of Control? A TOTAL surprise and I was elated! Ear to ear grins and giggles!
I came for the Melvins, Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo, but I left with a deep adoration for Spotlights and a 365-day calendar of “The Many O-Faces of Scott Ian” and that’s more than OK. I’m in love. Thank you, Scott, for fulfilling this schoolboy’s adolescent dreams, 30 years later!
The Night They Came Home by Mr. Bungle

Updates: 4 Most Anticipated TV Shows of 2023
TV releases are difficult to anticipate because, unlike films, where release dates can be set years in advance, streamers and networks frequently wait until just before the drop to secure their positions. Having said that, a number of new titles and sequel seasons are officially verified. Here is our updated list of the most expected releases for 2023, with some room for well-informed speculation. The Mandalorian Season 3, Disney+ (March 1) The Mandalorian's heartbreaking Season 2 conclusion seems like a lifetime ago. Although The Book of Boba Fett thankfully brought the family of two back together, it's high time the show returns for Season 3. The third season of The Mandalorian, which premieres on March 1, will transport viewers to Mandalore as Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff), who thinks she is the legitimate heir to the weapon and the throne, grapples with what it means to wield the Darksaber. It appears from the previews that Din will run into more Mandalorians than ever before. which will either help or hinder his quest to realize that there is more to life beyond what the Death Watch extremists taught him. Given that Pascal was occupied in Canada while The Mandalorian was shooting due to his The Last of Us filming schedule. It is difficult to predict whether Season 3 will include more helmet-free Din. Regardless, Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder's performances are always enjoyable to watch. Especially when they are combined with Pascal's dulcet Mandalorian voice. True Lies: Season 1, CBS (March 1) Based on the 1994 James Cameron film, which was a remake of the French film La Totale!. A spy's wife unwittingly becomes engaged in his covert activity. In reimagined versions of the roles played by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis in the film, Steve Howey portrays the spy and Ginger Gonzaga, his wife. TV can't handle action the scale of an Arnold movie, so it will probably focus more on comedy. The depiction of how a housewife can become a secret operative in a television program in 2023 ought to hopefully be a little more feminized. Daisy Jones and the Six, Prime Video (March 3) Daisy Jones and the Six, Which is based on the New York Times best-selling book of the same name. It tells the tale of the legendary band from the 1970s. That was led by the charismatic but feuding lead vocalists Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne. Their complex musical collaboration propelled the band from obscurity to unbelievable renown. They were drawn together by personal and creative chemistry. Then, following a sold-out performance at Soldier Field in Chicago, they abruptly called it quits. After all these years, the band members now consent to tell the truth. This is the tale of how a legendary band broke up at the height of its strength, set to an original Daisy Jones and the Six soundtracks. The novel is classic. However the TV show which had anticipated TV list for so long that some critics and fans find it hard to believe there is actually an official premier date. Due to COVID shutdowns the scheduling of the TV series was delayed. This TV series is the ideal blend of nostalgia and life lesson. The Company You Keep: Season 1, ABC (February 19) The drama stars former This Is Us hot dad Milo Ventimiglia as a con artist from a family of artists who pines for an undercover CIA officer. It is based on the South Korean television series My Fellow Citizens! (Played by Boyfriends of Christmas Past actress Catherine Haena Kim). The cast also includes Sarah Wayne Callies, Tim Chiou, James Saito, and Freda Foh Shen. Observes con artist Charlie and CIA agent Emma covertly. The two fall in love after a night of passion, despite the fact that their work paths are unintentionally converging. Charlie intensifies the "family business" so he can leave permanently, but Emma is closing in on the vengeful criminal holding Charlie's family debts in custody, compelling them to face the lies they have told in order to protect their families from dire repercussions. 2020 CMT Music Awards
So today on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I am going to talk about and review the 2020 CMT Music Awards that originally aired on CMT (Country Music Television) which is channel 327 on Directv and was at 8pm EST (Eastern Standard Time) on Wednesday October 21st, 2020. This show took place in Nashville, Tennessee and was co-hosted by Kane Brown, Ashley McBryde, & Sarah Hyland from Modern family. On this review, I will give you all the award winners, and who I thought should have won according to MSR (Midnight Star Report) which is my weekly Country Music Countdown. And of course at the end, I will also give my performance of the night. So lets get started now.
Performances. Luke Combs with Brooks & Dunn - 1,2 many. Sam Hunt - Hard to forget. Ingrid Andress - Lady like. Maren Morris - To hell & back. Ashley McBryde - Martha Devine. Travis Denning - After a few. Morgan Wallen - Chasin' you. Gabby Barrett - I hope. Dan + Shay - I should probably go to bed. Caylee Hammack - Just friends. Kane Brown - Worship you. Jimmie Allen & Noah Cyrus - This is us. Mickey Guyton - Heaven down here. Shania Twain - Whose bed have your boots been under? Luke Bryan - What she wants tonight. Riley Green - If it wasn't for trucks. Kelsea Ballerini & Halsey - The other girl. Hardy - One beer. Little Big Town - Wine, beer, whiskey.
Awards (Who won what, & who should have won).
Dan + Shay - Duo video of the year - I should probably go to bed. This one should have gone to Maddie & Tae or Locash. They did better on MSR (Midnight Star Report), but I do get this is a fan voted award show.
Carrie Underwood - Female video of the year - Drinking alone. This one should have gone to Maren Morris - The bones.
Granger Smith - Quarantine video of the year - Don't cough on me! I didn't know this was part of the show. So I had no opinion on this award.
Jennifer Nettles (Sugarland) - Equal play award. Another award I didn't know about.
Chris Young - CMT Performance of the year - Drowning. He should have won this award with that performance. He stepped in for Kane Brown after Kane loss his friend.
Luke Bryan - Male video of the year - One margarita. This was the best choice out of the ones they have selected.
Gabby Barrett - Breakthrough video of the year - I hope. This one should have gone to Travis Denning who stayed on the chart forever it seemed like. And he did sent a record with After a few.
Old Dominion - Group video of the year - One man band. They should have won this and they did.
Blake Shelton & Gwen Stefani - Collaborative video of the year - Nobody but you. This one I picked Thomas Rhett & Jon Pardi - Beer can't fix. That song earned both a spot on my artist of the year special which is still to come.
Carrie Underwood - Video of the year - Drinking alone. The video I picked for this one didn't even make the first cut. I picked Sam Hunt - Hard to forget. Sam Hunt has earned a spot on my Artist of the year as well.
And that's a wrap for the show. And the performance of the night I would give to Kane Brown for the 2nd award show in a row. Thanks for taking the time to read this review. And I am giving this show a 3 out of 5 stars. There were some award winners that deserved it and some that did not. And I am a fan of new music which is why I picked Kane Brown for the performance of the night. And also this show took place on Kane Brown's Birthday.

hey girl! i really think of you as a go to for both book and romance recs in general and i was wondering if you could recommend some historical romance books that you love or are favorites of yours?
Oh thank you! And yes, I’d be happy to!
Most recently, I loved Evie Dumore’s Bringing Down The Duke, which has a bluestocking feminist meet a cold duke who can’t stand how fucking into her he is in the Victorian era. The tension is SO well done in that one.
Though it’s not a romance per se, Daisy Jones and The Six is one of my all time favorites. It focuses on the rise and fall of a 1970s rock band, and focuses on the aaaaaaaaaaaaaching romantic tension between Daisy Jones, a troubled singer, and Billy Dunne, the married leader of the band she joins. They’re amazing creative partners, but are incredibly resentful of the fact that they can’t be together, which is one of my favorite tropes.
Kate Quinn’s Mistress of Rome is another favorite of mine--it focuses on Leah, a Jewish slave girl, who falls in love with a gladiator. They’re torn apart and you basically see Leah struggle to survive and eventually rise to the status of the emperor’s mistress while her ~one true love~ never forgets her and struggles to get back to her. It’s very epic, and the start of a series that is altogether awesome.
My Lady’s Choosing by Kitty Curran is a sort off the beat path choice; it’s a choose your own adventure regency romance novel for adults. Very fun and campy and also just as explicit as any typical romance novel.
Jude Deveraux is a classic romance novelist who I love--her “A Knight In Shining Armor” (time travel + medieval knights) and Highland Velvet series (men in kilts) are probably her most notable works.
I just read a Liz Carlyle book for the first time--Three Little Secrets, which has a woman reconnecting with the man she eloped with as a teenager, 13 years after they were torn apart and he became forever emotionally scarred lol--and I really like her style. Very classic.
Otherwise, I would recommend Sarah Maclean, Tessa Dare, and Julia Quinn in general. Also, the romance novel bookstore The Ripped Bodice is currently doing care packages--you fill out a form and then bill you and send you books based on the style requests you made. They’re great, and I definitely recommend trying them for historical romance recs!
I hope this helped. :)

An Le is on a roll. After last week’s lucky shamrock, we are getting another set of four (outtakes). Well, strictly speaking the set contains six images, but two of which we already know.

Just to be sure:
I am now reminded of the drip feed of photos by Robert Ascroft that we were treated to in 2013. 2013? *eeek* My cod, I can’t believe it’s seven years ago. From that perspective, it’s high time that we get a new no-purpose shoot. No purpose other than to provide some candy for the eyes. I also feel vaguely reminded of Sarah Dunn, although An Le’s style of photography is very different. But I see the same contrived poses that usually turn me off a photograph, no matter how much I like the subject. Well, maybe that is finally a theme that I could riff on in an *ooof*. Having said that, I am quite enamoured with the third image. It’s such a typical Armitage gesture, gives some nice thumb porn for those who are into that, and delights me because it hides the beard 😂. Jokes aside – it’s the smile, of course, that gets me, and I like the soft waves in the hair and the crinkles around his eye. Well, maybe I have just found the picture that is *ooof*worthy of the lot… 😉
In other news: A big massive thank you to you wonderful fandom friends. My quick and spontaneous face mask sale went down a storm. The initially posted 21 face masks from Saturday were sold out within a couple of hours. I added 6 more which sold out immediately, too. That’s when I ran out of elastic band 😂. The good news is that I have just received in the post my order of new elastic. I cut the rest of my Armitage fabrics yesterday and managed to get 12 more masks out of it. The masks are pre-sewn at this point, so I will finish the masks today for further sales.
Depending on the postage – I am off to the post office after writing this blog – the sale of the face masks will have generated between 270 and 320 Euro for the auction’s postage fund. That is fantastic, and I cannot thank you enough for your support!
Speaking of going to the post office. I have another errand this morning, and it is one that amuses and horrifies me in equal measure. You won’t believe what I have been tasked to do. I am picking up a decommissioned rocket propelled grenade. 😱 😬 🤮 Rest assured that I am “rocket REpelled” myself, and was half ready to decline this request for a favour on the grounds of general principles of being anti-war and pacifist. But the item was bought by one of my favourite friends who just recently did us the favour of letting my son and his band stay in his country farm to record their first EP, so I owe him one. (He lives abroad and can’t pick it up himself.) Needless to say that my friend is not going to make use of this horrific item. On the contrary, he is a historian and political scientist and is thus interested in it for the sake of local history. Anyway, the auction house where the item is currently waiting to be picked up, is in walking distance from my home. I have just researched the weight of the thing and in the process probably ruined my search history forever *waves at the Irish secret police* – and it apparently weighs less than 10kg. Well, it better, because I have no car at my disposal and will have to carry it home. I am hoping that the auction house has wrapped it up and concealed it. I mean, can you imagine someone walking down the street with a discernible weapon – in this day and age. 😱 I am going to bring a big Ikea bag and a blanket to wrap and conceal that horrible instrument in. So cross your fingers that there will be no incidents. Grrrrrrr.
Off to the post office now to send the masks on their way. Hooray! 😘
More An Le Pictures An Le is on a roll. After last week's lucky shamrock, we are getting another set of four (outtakes).
