My next randomized country turned out to be Germany. There's a decent amount in translation, so I thought I'd share the list! There is probably more, feel free to add. (I'm reading Boy in a White Room)
🇩🇪 YA from Germany in translation 🇩🇪
Series:
Inkheart series by Cornelia Funke: probably the most-known. A girl can bring characters from books to life. The author has 3 other series in English: Dragon Rider, Mirrorworld, and Ghosthunters.
Woodwalkers by Katja Brandis: Shapeshifting high schoolers
Arcadia series by Kai Meyer: A mafia saga set in Sicily. He also wrote the Dark Reflections series set in a magical medieval Venice.
Bibi & Miyu by Olivia Vieweg: German-original manga series
Erebos by Ursula Poznanski: teens get caught up in a shady computer game
Contemporary:
Why We Took the Car by Wolfgang Herrndorf: Original title "Tschick", two outsiders go on a roadtrip
Boy in a White Room by Karl Olsberg: a near-future sci-fi exploration of AI
Fantasy:
Sign of the Eight by Benjamin Lebert: A search for comrades in the Black Forest and an epic battle
Historical:
Beyond the Blue Border by Dorit Linke: Two teens try to swim the Baltic Sea to escape Communist East Germany, written by an East German.
The Edelweiss Pirates by Dirk Reinhardt: Fictionalization of an anti-Nazi resistance group
Traitor by Gudrun Pausewang: A German girl finds a Russian soldier hiding in her barn during WW2.
Max by Sarah Cohen-Scali: A boy born from a Nazi breeding program.
Old-School (20+ years old):
Tell Me What You See (2003) by Zoran Drvenkar: Teen gothic horror in a graveyard
The Bird is a Raven (2003) by Benjamin Lebert: Two boys share secrets in a train compartment
Crazy (1999) by Benjamin Lebert: a rebellious disabled teen boy
Girl from Mars (2003) by Tamara Bach: sapphic high school story

One of the final lessons of the Till Lindemann sex saga is how quickly your "friends" will sell you out for a nickel and five minutes of screen time. Rammstein's former head of security, with whom Till was once close, opened his cakehole; Zoran Bihac has been poor-mouthing Till's solo work; Peter Tagtgren's partner ground her ax*
Moral of the story: You have no true friends when you are famous. Don't trust anyone.
*The most ANY of these people could say was that women fought over the chance to have sex with Till. Oh, noes! How dare consenting adults want to bone!

Christopher Walken becomes zoran later on in the week and a gathering of the stuff now and The saga is going to begin shortly it is intense and he is going to be the focal point of the Hudson Bay research and assault and more because he's been researching how to get there and what it's all about cuz their sense that you should go up there and he can't get there. You thought it was us for a while but I saw Tommy f clones starting about a month ago and really felt stupid so he backed off and went after Tommy Africa got decimated. Huge numbers of people are flocking to Florida to try and help they realize the clone Army is attacking here and people can't do anything they're stymied they say this guy is all over us it's not him it's not CAA and Tommy f and he keeps sending it out and people are trying to get through the blockade so all sudden that gets it it's starting to do stuff like that he's calling his people from West point it's getting a meetings they're scared but they have to do it and I said who taught you to do that nobody this is just like kind of logical cuz I can't get by so we have to blow some holes it's less expensive than trying to take the whole thing down and you work both hands with threatening the leadership affairs instead of yourself so he said it's pretty smart but it's only going to stop Gap and we don't know what the result will be he says we don't either but we can't let it faster cuz we can take it over the result will be all of us will get captured. They said that's true they started working he said we got to do things smarter and around here gifted people are beat they can't handle it anymore they need to see him and they are now and he worked at it and figured it out so in his dad a little bit they said that's fine I have my own money I just need help accessing it and we're going to help so it's going to change tons of people are trying

NU Unveils Immersive Gem “Farsi” Via Cafe De Anatolia
A multi-faceted artist with a great story to tell, NU is Cafe De Anatolia’s latest signing, with undoubtedly a more than impressive career ahead of him. NU is a nomad of modern times, having traveled across the world with his music, searching for inspiration while having found his true calling: instrumentals amalgamated with his electronic production, all held together through solid rhythms.
NU’s extensive travels have defined him as an artist and allowed him to take inspiration from his many homes to craft his multi-layered music, which masterfully combines electronica, downtempo and ethnic sounds. His unmatched talent has resulted in massive cultural hits, such as his re-interpretation of the famous Armenian song “Man O To,” and his original “Who Loves The Sun” alongside Jo.Ke, which have both went on to amass over 60 million combined streams on Spotify alone, as well as become massive cultural moments in electronic music.
Now, following his impressive single “SAGA” alongside Yi Yi Thant, NU has returned with yet another gem, debuting on Cafe De Anatolia with “Farsi.” Spanning almost 9 minutes in length, “Farsi” masterfully showcases NU’s unmatched knack for crafting intricate and immersive downtempo anthems, while infusing his production with various organic elements that make his feel like it’s actually alive. “Farsi” starts off with smooth kicks, catchy claps and playful melodies, while the arrangement slowly progresses with the help of more and more elements that are being added and contribute to this incredible vibe.
NU marks just the first of many artists Cafe De Anatolia has on its radar and is gearing up to release music with. Fans of the acclaimed label can expect to hear new music from the likes of Just Emma, Savage & SHē, Urmet K, Tavi Castro, Timboletti, Rialians On Earth, Adam Husa, Billy Esteban, Ghenwa Nemnom, Boudi Hamad, Jad Halal, Mass Digital, Jose Solano, Jerry Spoon, IV-IN, Ravestronauts, Zuma Dionys, Tuba Twooz, Stone Submarines, Ivailo Blagoev, HVMZA, Gaz Mawete, Beije and many more in the next three months.
Cafe De Anatolia was founded back in May of 2017 by Zoran Iliev (aka Billy Esteban), Monika Ilieva, and Nikola Iliev (aka Nickarth & Rialians On Earth). Since its launch, the label has established itself as one of the most prestigious tastemakers within downtempo, electronica, ethnic deep house and more, while empowering hundreds of established and budding artists across the electronic spectrum to make a positive impact in the scene, and successfully release their best music yet.

The Boys and Babies~
Tumblr media
Ok I'm imagining that a baby is either found somewhere and they are searching for their parents. Or the parents are incapacitated in the hospital and the guilds are asked to watch over the kiddo until the parents return. The boys will have their own kiddies in the future and they'll make wonderful parents. For now those some of the boys might be a bit flustered with a baby :3c
Also the perfect way to make the boys feel clucky for their own brood and get in some practice~
CtS Crew:
~Axel/Lynus~ They would just thrive with a baby. I can't exaggerate how much. Make everyone envious with how domestic they are. Seriously. Both just take in stride and fall into the role of parents so easily. The transition so smooth. • Lynus is already motherly, so looking after a small little baby would come so naturally to him. Very intuitive and is likely to attend to baby before it even has the chance to fuss • Axel can be fatherly when needed so protective dad Axel will happen. Cradling tiny baby in his big, strong arms just makes Lynus melt at the sight. • They sleep with baby in their room, taking turns to get up during the night when needed. Axel gets up more than Lynus as Lynus still works shifts at the hospital. • Lynus looks like a natural with a baby balanced on his hip. • Axel looks somewhat out of place with a baby in the crook of his arm, but after a while it fits with his image so well. And seeing the three of them walking through the streets of Lagaard looks so natural that outsiders simply accept it. • Lynus singing baby to sleep while rocking it in his arms. Axel is leaning against the doorframe of the room and watching with a fond expression on his face.
~Jhon/Tobyn~ Awkward for the both of them. Even Jhon. Tobyn is outright terrified. The baby is so small. Jhon is brilliant at protecting people from danger, but taking care of a small child is a little out of his league. Again Tobyn is petrified because what to do with this baby? • Tobyn holding the baby awkwardly as it chews on his hair. An expression of disgust on his face. He's still holding the kiddo though • Jhon is afraid of accidentally hurting baby because he is strong and the baby is small and frail and he holds the child awkwardly in his arms. • Jhon is the first to come to some kind of understanding in regards to babies and with a bit of coaching is able to hold the child securely. • Tobyn has a keen eye for danger, so he is able to keep a close eye on the baby/child, preventing any possible harm. • Jhon sleeping with baby on his chest and Tobyn can't handle it because he really does look sexy doting over a child. • Baby sitting on Tobyn’s lap as he works on his codexes
~Shen/Magnus~ Also awkward for the both of them. Understandably. • Magnus is afraid of both the child screaming and accidentally hurting it with his abilities. His greatest fear is hurting others, after all. And this small child wouldn't be able to withstand anything he just might lose control of. • Shen is stoic at first because of who he is. But he's actually the first to cradle the child gently and dote on it in a silent, protective way. His father was his greatest idol, after all. And this is giving him the chance to understand his father further. • Magnus sitting on the floor with baby on lap as they play with Zanna together. • Shen pacing around the inn at night with baby in his arms as he sooths it back to sleep. • Magnus occupying baby as they sit outside and watch as Shen trains.
~Lirit/Macerio~ Lirit would take it in stride, immediately cooing over the baby while Macerio would be a little more hesitant. After what happened to his own mother he’s understandably worried for the baby’s biological parents. He’ll come around though with Lirit’s gentle coaching and reassurance. • Macerio becomes protective of the baby and is reluctant to let it out of his sight, choosing to carry baby with him if he has to go somewhere. • Lirit is very good at occupying the baby, making it laugh by making funny noises. • Lirit also sings to baby and plays soothing lullabies when putting baby down for a nap. • If baby is extra fussy, Macerio lies down as well and cradles baby in his arms until it falls asleep. • Macerio is very good at feeding baby; very patient and ensures that baby always has enough to eat.
~Hamza/Cedric~ Another pair who would just flourish taking care of a baby for any reason. • Cedric would be inwardly fearful because of his frail lungs and will fret over the minute possibility that he would somehow infect the child with his illness. He would canoodle the kiddo anyway. • Cedric cheerfully taking the little one shopping for clothes and toys, carrying the baby while Hamza carries the bags. • The crib would be in Cedric’s room so he can get up during the night and rush to the baby immediately. • Cedric would also fret over the tiniest little ailment. Or perceived ailment. Hamza is constantly reassuring him that the baby is fine. • Hamza is the one who is able to feed the baby without much fuss, leaving Cedric pouty. • When baby is extra fussy only Cedric will able to soothe it and it sleeps contently in Cedric’s arms. • Hamza is very protective of both baby and Cedric and watches everyone suspiciously should Cedric be taking the baby outside for a walk.
~Simmons/Rahas~ People outside of the two guilds would be extremely reluctant to allow these two to look after a small baby. But with Guardians/Cosmos close no one will have the courage to speak out against them. • Simmons, being the good boy that he is, would immediately dote over the baby. Inwardly though he’s worried because the baby is smaller than he expected and he has such big arms and he’s afraid of accidentally hurting baby. He’d try to stay cheerful but honestly he’s quieter than usual and very, very cautious. • Rahas on the other hand is simply “Oh fuck no!” for the entirely of the situation. And he will be dragged into it kicking and screaming if need be. • Rahas holding the baby under the arms and away from him as he looks around at others for help with a terrified look on his face. He is constantly thinking “wtf am I supposed to do with this???” • Seriously though Rahas is terrified as he has no experience with children or looking after those much younger than him. What is he supposed to do? He really doesn’t know. He does know how to protect someone though. So that’s what he sticks with for now. • No surprise Rahas is very protective over Simmons and baby. Simmons is the one who deals with the fussy little baby and he’s actually really quite good at settling the fussy baby down. And Rahas gets the front seat view of Simmons being gentle and loving with such a small little baby.
~Shiki/Gerald~ I’ve already done some asks on these two~ Just using this post to reaffirm that Ghali will make an appearance in a future CtS saga and Shiki/Gerald will adopt little Ghali as their own. And it will be glorious, I promise~
~Chi-hung~ All babies adore big fluffy Chi-hung and Chi-hung is protective of tiny humans. He cuddles with them in front of the fire place and he nuzzles them with his nose when they are crying.
ALE/C Crew:
~Bryce/Varuna~ For Varuna it would be awkward at first but Bryce he takes it in stride immediately. • Varuna is understandable cautious. He has his Silent Assassin thing to deal with after all, and it's not something he can consciously control yet. So he's understandably terrified of accidentally hurting a child. • Bryce accepts the role of parent quickly and readily. He’s done it before. He raised Blayden by himself after all. • Bryce gets Varuna involved with taking care of the baby. Letting Varuna hold and carry the baby around while he gets food ready and such. Varuna is always asking if he’s doing it right and he always is. • Varuna is a fast learner and after watching Bryce for a little while he slowly eases himself into the caretaker role as well. Working alongside Bryce, learning how to hold baby and feed baby. Bryce just adores watching as Varuna goes from cautious and fearful to gentle and affectionate as he cuddles baby against his chest. • Varuna is more of a protector though and he becomes more cautious of other people in regards of Bryce and baby, ensuring that they are safe whenever they are outside.
~Achyuta/Nitish~ And just when you think these two could not possibly be any more domestic. • Achyuta is a little cautious, naturally, as he didn’t grow up in the most loving of environments. But he sees a small, vulnerable child and he knows that he will do whatever is necessarily to protect it. • Nitish takes on the motherly role easily and adores cuddling the baby. • They take turns reading to it, letting baby sit on their lap as they read or do some paperwork. • They take baby with them everywhere, even when visiting the Count at his office. Zoran joins them to help entertain the baby as they do their business. • Achyuta wants to ensure that baby has the best possibly health so works to ensure that baby has the healthiest foods to keep it healthy and strong.
~Zesiro/Roxbury~ Ahhh now this could cause a little bit of tension. Not necessarily between Zesiro and Roxbury, but Zesiro would be greatly uncomfortable. Like Achyuta, his childhood was shit and he’s terrified that he could be the cause of giving this baby a shit childhood. • Roxbury is a naturally protective and maternal person. He would immediately take care of the baby. No hesitation. A child needs him and he will be there to look after baby for as long as it takes. • Zesiro is reluctant to get involved. He wants to internally though. He wants to take on a fatherly/parental role. Or at least a big brother role because he couldn’t do that for Achyuta. It makes him feel guilty still. So he’s torn between not wanting to get involved and getting involved. • Roxbury is quick to understand his reluctance and he can see how torn Zesiro is. He knows he wants to be involved so he goes out of his way to get Zesiro involved. But in a subtle way so not to make him uncomfortable. • Zesiro is very cautious while also very protective. Of both Roxy and baby. No surprise but he will make sure that no one interferes with Mama Roxy and his doting over baby. And he keeps an eye on the both of them at all times. • Zesiro can’t help but melt though whenever he sees Roxbury cradling baby against his chest and placing a soft kiss to the baby’s brow. He looks so good looking after children…
~Isiah/Kalan~ Another pairing where one takes on the role quickly and easily while the other is terrified. • Isiah had raised Varuna and Nitish, so he knows how to take care of vulnerable children. And a medic gives him an advantage as well. • Kalan on the other hand is inwardly freaking out. He’s blind and afraid of hurting baby in everywhere; walking into it, dropping it, etc. He’s afraid to get involved. The thought makes him queasy. • Isiah is very efficient at taking care of baby. Very parental, moving on instinct and intuition. He has a little play pen in his office so he can work also. He can also work on his paperwork with baby cradled against his chest. • But he prefers having baby sleep with Kalan on the couch. Kalan is awkward, terrified as first. But Isiah insists. He gets Kalan to sit down on the couch where he helps position baby against his chest. Kalan is reassured that Isiah wouldn’t hand baby over to him if there was the slightest chance it could be harmed. • It takes a little while but Kalan soon becomes comfortable looking over baby and will sit on the floor of Isiah’s office to entertain baby while he works.
~Telem/Falkner~ Much the same as with Zesiro/Roxbury and Isiah/Kalan frankly. These poor natives of the Cloudy Stronghold are left floundering with the introduction of tiny babies. Telem is definitely no different. • Falkner has a lot of experience with looking after children. He looked after Fletcher and he helped out at the orphanage they grew up. He has experience with children and babies of all kinds. • Telem is often left awkwardly standing in the background as Falkner dotes on the baby. Falkner is a very cheerful caretaker, carrying baby around and making it laugh. It’s a sight that bemuses Telem but also makes him melt because he’s quite precious. • Telem however is very efficient at observing people and things. He prefers not to get involved, and instead ensure the safety and protection of Falkner and baby. So they have a silent agreement where Falkner takes care of baby and Telem ensures that they remain safe. • Baby likes Telem though so Falkner often gets Telem to hold and carry baby around. Absolutely clumsily at first but he eventually realises how to hold baby and when to give it back to Falkner.
Whew, I think that's it for now. Took a little longer than expected! Hahaha~ Hope I answered it right!

From A View To A Kill.

Former Yugoslavia's brutalist architecture shines in new Star Wars fan film
The Monument to the Unknown Hero atop Mount Avala became a Jedi shrine

At the end of last year, a Star Wars fan film with a difference enjoyed its online premier. Breaking Point: A Star Wars Story is a 25-minute short movie made by a volunteer crew composed of around fifty professional filmmakers, film students and members of Serbia's Star Wars fan community. It is written and directed by the award-winning Serbian filmmaker Stevan Filipović. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ThsXKVbO90] The film was shot on locations near the Serbian capital Belgrade. The futuristic Monument to the Fallen Soldiers of the Kosmaj Partisan Detachment from World War II atop Mount Kosmaj and the Monument to the Unknown Hero of World War I atop Mount Avala were both successfully transformed into Jedi landmarks. The apocryphal story is set before the real Star Wars movie The Force Awakens and depicts the demise of the Jedi order perpetrated by Kylo Ren. Global Voices got in touch with Filipović to talk about the movie. Global Voices (GV): Your movie received very positive media reviews, and was lauded by local StarWars fans. Fan fiction rarely sees this level of production. How did you manage it?
Stefan Filipović (SF): I think one can easily underestimate how much Star Wars means to people around the globe. It's a crucial part of our identities, much more than some local cultural phenomena, at least for a lot of people of my generation. I think we could never do something like this — get a completely professional film crew, and such amazing actors, for a non-profit fan film — if we all didn't share a lot of love and respect for this fictional universe George Lucas has created.
Left to right: Darko Ivić, Stefan Filipović and Slaven Došlo on the set of Breaking Point: A Star Wars Story. Photo by Tamara Antonović. Used with permission.
But, the other key was the story. I didn't set out to make a fan film, I wanted to make this really personal story, that happens to be set in the Star Wars universe. I think people reacted to that, saw the raw emotions and the potential of it, very early on. Darko Ivić, who plays Nol in the film, was there with me from the very start when I started dreaming about this film.  And then Slaven Došlo went to Disneyland, and brought me a gift — Yoda's lightsaber, and I knew I wanted him to portray the younger brother, Kess. He has this mix of naïveté and pain that I thought was integral to the character. Jana was selected through casting, but the moment she walked in, we thought — that's Mala. The rest of the crew was something of a filmmaker's dream. We had great support from Hypnopolis, the company that has produced all of my films. Basically, everybody who volunteered to help was listed as a co-producer, since we didn't have a budget. In the end, with almost no resources, with shared love for Star Wars, and connections from my previous three feature films, we got quite literally the top Serbian film crews in all fields: from stunts to world-class visual effects, professional color grading, award-winning sound designer, through amazing creatures and prosthetic make-up effects, insane music (available on our YouTube channel), and — of course — great help from the students of the Academy of Arts, where I teach.

GV: Artists from the Balkans, like Zoran Cardula from North Macedonia, have in the past explored visual similarities between Star Wars iconography and the brutalist architecture of former Yugoslavia. Your film has brought this connection to a whole new level and through a completely new medium. How did you decide on those particular monuments?
SF: There is something very deeply ‘Star-Wars-esque’ in the stories and legends of former Yugoslavia, or, rather – vice versa. The epic exodus and rebirth of WWI, and then — chaos, civil war, Tito's rebel partisans from all nations who overcame their differences to fight a great evil (the Nazis), their victory, peace, the creation of this New Republic, which leads to another rise in nationalism and the fall of the Republic… It's hard to separate our actual history from a synopsis of the entire Skywalker saga!

So, these relics from our past were perfect to create the atmosphere of Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy — built after the wars, on the ruins of the bygone era — they represent the history which Nol and Dust never had a chance to learn from, yet which shaped their destinies. So, Ivan Meštrović's masterpiece, the Mount Avala Monument to the Unknown Hero became a Jedi shrine, and the Mount Kosmaj WWII monument became ancient Jedi ruins. From a filmmaker's perspective, the Brutalist ex-Yugoslavia architecture was very modern, created in an age where we were looking to the stars, to the future, for inspiration. That makes it stand out today. Both of these locations had mystery and majesty, and I really feel they add something unique to the film. We were very fortunate to get permissions to film there.
GV: The main characters of Breaking Point are commoners. In the official Star Wars movies, members of two ‘genetically superior royal families’ (to paraphrase David Brin) and their entourages tend to run the show. Rogue One (2016) is perhaps an exception. Do you consider your short a part of a trend anticipating ‘democratization’ of that universe, with stories that explore wider social issues through the experiences of people from all social classes?
SF: Yes, well, there's that famous quote from Clerks, about all the workers who built the Death Star and their untold stories. But, seriously, I think Star Wars mythology is now so rich and detailed that it can be compared to many of the existing, historical, myths around the globe, at least in scope and sheer level of detail. The place of the pop-culture in our modern societies is yet to be analyzed by historians and social anthropologists, but, I think it's safe to say that these modern pop-cultural myths occupy a very important place in our lives. In that respect, I feel Star Wars is now more than just another franchise, it's an integral part of global cultural heritage. So, it was interesting to me to try to find a local angle, to try to add to this mythology from our own point of view. We could never make something like The Crown here, but that doesn't mean we don't have amazing stories of our own to tell, and we sure as hell can make films like Dirty Dozen or Rogue One. And class is an important part of that. So we made the entire backstory of Breaking Point about class, in a way. It was interesting for me to imagine — could a poor kid, with no education, and no family, who grew up in the mean streets of Serbia in the 90s become a Jedi Knight, this zen warrior-monk? Or do the wounds that we all have, from the wars, the politics, crime, make us emotionally unstable, unfit? How can we escape that?
Jana Milosavljević as Mala in Breaking Point: A Star Wars Story. Photo by Tamara Antonović. Used with permission.
The protagonists of our film had really tough childhoods. They were separated, the older one became a drug dealer to survive. The younger one was sold to slavery to the same Dickensian crime boss who once owned Han Solo – Lady Proxima. Mala, the Twi'lek girl, was a sex worker from her early teens. They were then rescued by Luke Skywalker, and now they are training to be Jedi, but they have these gaping wounds in their hearts, all of them. These wounds are the weaknesses that the Dark Side exploits through Ben Solo, the future Kylo Ren. But, it's not Ben Solo who turns them against each other — it's their own fears and weaknesses and old wounds that make the brothers go for each other's throats. In short, they represent the history of the conflicts that led to the breakup of former Yugoslavia. Brothers, killing each other, over past wounds and revived nationalism. That rise of toxic nationalism in the former Yugoslav countries has a striking resemblance to the revival of the Empire that Ben Solo was rooting for, and that is a major political point in the sequel trilogy. I'm sorry they didn't elaborate on this backstory as seriously as George Lucas did when he was creating Star Wars films. Especially in the contemporary world, where we see the reemergence of politics that we all thought defeated so many years ago, and that have caused so much pain and suffering.
Final scenes of Breaking Point: A Star Wars Story. Photo by Tamara Antonović. Used with permission.
GV: Critiques of Breaking Point focused on length of the film. They wanted more. Do you plan any sequels?
SF: The ending was supposed to be mysterious, poetic, kind of elusive, like a dream. Kess dies, finding his faith again, because of the only pure thing in his life — his love for Mala. So, it's a completed story for us, and we don't plan to make a sequel. But making a prequel would be really interesting — Nol, Kess and Mala living on Corellia, before Luke Skywalker rescued them. On the other hand, perhaps it would be too dark for Star Wars. I don't know… We'll see. Difficult to see, the future, as Yoda once said.
GV: Science fiction and fantasy had been integral parts of mainstream culture in former Yugoslavia, currently very few authors from the region work in these genres. As a feature film director, you have been an outlier in this sense, with the successful fantasy film Shaitan's Warrior in 2006. In Next to Me (2015), you tackled the intersection between new technologies and society. Do you see potential for more sci-fi production in Serbia, or the wider the Balkans region?
SF: I don't care much about “genre” or “sci-fi” or other labels. I think the obsession with “genre vs. arthouse” is a very weird European phenomenon (much like the formulaic obsession with genres is a weird American phenomenon), and it kinda makes us lose focus on what really matters — telling good stories, writing from the heart, creating compelling characters that matter to the audiences. I think we have here the potential to dream about anything we want, but we often choose not to dream, and rather to create films made to fit European financing strategies and schemes. This results in movies that feel more like a product than your average Hollywood fare, minus the virtue of being watchable. And this is the reason people are more inspired by quality TV and games than movies these days. So, in short, yes — I think we can do pretty much whatever we want, but we need to fight for a different financing system to enable it and different standards to realise the potential of thinking “outside the box”.

Unbroken: Path to Redemption: A Brief History of Louis Zamperini’s Journey
UNBROKEN: Path to Redemption: A Brief History of Louis Zamperini’s Journey
UnbrokenFilm.com Running Time: 98 minutes Rating: PG-13 #UnbrokenFilm
“I’d made it this far and refused to give up because, all my life, I had always finished the race.” —Louie Zamperini
When he passed away on July 2, 2014 at the age of 97, Louie Zamperini was victoriously celebrated as a true American hero. This former Olympian, whose long, incredible and inspiring life has been described as one of the greatest stories of triumph in the 20 th century, lived through and beyond what most could comprehend. His tale of crippling despair trumped by indomitable will and redemption continues to serve as a message of hope for the millions who have been affected and inspired by his journey.
And it all began more than a century ago. As a youth in Torrance, California, the youngest son of Italian immigrants, Louie was an incorrigible delinquent, breaking into homes, stealing from shops and brawling with anyone who dared challenge this untamable boy. As a teenager, with the persistent encouragement of his older brother, Pete, Louie turned his life around by channeling defiant energy into a shocking talent for running. Breaking record after record across the nation, the 19-year-old “Torrance Tornado” qualified for the 1936 Berlin Olympics and surprised everyone whom he encountered—from his famous teammate Jesse Owens to the man who almost veered mankind toward global destruction: Adolf Hitler.
Like most young people of his generation, when World War II broke out, the young student from University of Southern California, who had come within seconds of breaking the four-minute mile, put his dreams on hold and enlisted in the service. His military career would lead him to become an Army Air Corps bombardier, in which 2 nd Lt. Zamperini embarked upon numerous missions across the Pacific—a daunting profession where approximately 50 percent of his fellow airmen wouldn’t make it through the war. In April 1943, Louie’s defective B-24 Liberator, the Green Hornet, on a rescue mission in the South Pacific, suffered engine failure and crashed into the sea, killing eight of the 11 crew members upon impact.
Louie and his Green Hornet’s two fellow survivors—Russell Allen “Phil” Phillips, the craft’s captain, and Sgt. Francis “Mac” McNamara, its tail gunner—drifted in a six-feet-long by two-feet-wide raft in the open Pacific for many weeks. Mac managed to hang on for 33 days—surviving seven rounds of strafing by a Japanese bomber and the omnipresent sharks that circled their vessel—before he tragically succumbed to his hunger, dehydration and exhaustion. Louie and Phil lasted for a total of 47 days, a
record in the annals of history for survivors on a raft, and ultimately drifted 2,000 miles to an atoll in the Marshall Islands, with the remnants of a typhoon carrying them to shore.
Just as they saw land and were beginning to float toward it, they were captured by the Japanese navy and imprisoned in the first of what would be several POW camps. During more than two years of torturous captivity, Louie—alongside his fellow prisoners—was starved, not to mention mentally and physically abused beyond comprehension. Louie was singled out by a prison commander named Mutsuhiro Watanabe, known to the men as “The Bird,” for particularly sadistic acts of mind games and deplorable brutality.
Louie survived these inhumane ordeals across the most severe regions of war-torn Japan before he learned, on August 20, 1945, (two weeks after the 9,000-pound bomb called Little Boy annihilated Hiroshima), that the Allied prisoners were free men and that the war was over. As Laura Hillenbrand writes in the definitive Louie Zamperini biography, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption: “In the midst of running, celebrating men, Louie stood on wavering legs, emaciated, sick and dripping wet. In his tired mind, two words were repeating themselves over and over: ‘I’m free! I’m free! I’m free!’”
The veteran who had survived so much returned home to Southern California, but his life was forever changed. Louie was plagued by nightmares and a crippling mental disorder that would not be classified as such until decades later: post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Like the countless heroes who returned from the far reaches of these cruel detention camps, Louie found post-war life a monumental struggle. For four years after his internment, he battled crippling anxiety, alcohol abuse and demons that visited him every time he went to sleep.
Only after Louie and his new bride, Cynthia, heard a young preacher by the name of Reverend Billy Graham speak in September 1949 would he understand his need to be forgiven and to forgive others. Embracing his new-found Christian faith, Louie’s life turned completely around. In subsequent years, Louie devoted himself to spreading a message of faith, fortitude and forgiveness…going so far as to travel back to Japan and offering forgiveness to the prison guards who had starved him and beat him senseless. Only “The Bird” refused to meet with him.
Louie’s story had all the makings of an unforgettable film. In fact, Universal Pictures had long been interested in his life. In 1957, the studio acquired the rights to Louie’s book Devil at My Heels. Back then it was planned as a vehicle for Tony Curtis, but the project was shelved before a script was drafted. In 1998, a CBS Sports documentary on Louie’s life aired on the network and breathed life back into the project. When producer Matthew Baer watched the piece, he was tremendously affected by what he saw, unknowingly embarking upon what would be a 16-year quest to get a film made. He met with Louie and his family, then brought Louie’s story back to Universal Pictures, as the studio remained tied to the rights. The studio was once again interested in bringing this epic saga to the screen. Although several screenplays were commissioned at the time, no director signed on to the project.
In 2002, however, a turn of events changed everything. Louie Zamperini and best-selling author Laura Hillenbrand’s eight-year journey together began just as the author finished Seabiscuit: An American Legend. During her research for her first book, she kept coming across another famous Californian who was discussed as the only one who could give Seabiscuit a run for his money. She thought: “Someday, I’m going to look into this guy.” She wrote Louie a letter, and he wrote back.
The more they communicated, the more Hillenbrand was fascinated by what she learned about the man and asked if she could write her next book about him. Louie agreed, even though he had written his own story years before. His life dedicated to service, he wanted to spread the word of reconciliation as far as he could.
During their collaboration, which ultimately spanned more than 75 phone interviews and exhaustive globe-spanning research supported by approximately 400 endnotes, Hillenbrand and Zamperini agreed not to meet in person until the book was published. The author needed to envision Louie as the young troublemaker whose spirit would transform him into a hero for the ages…and the subject was busy enough with a charitable schedule and speaking engagements that seemed impossible for men half his age.
Published in 2010, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption became a runaway bestseller, spending more than 185 weeks (15 of those in the top position) on The New York Times hardcover bestseller list. Among its many accolades, Unbroken was awarded Best Nonfiction Book of the Year by Time magazine and won the Los Angeles Times Book of the Year Award for Biography.
After years of having Louie’s amazing story turned down by other financiers, Baer, buoyed by the public’s embrace of Hillenbrand’s book, brought Unbroken back to Universal for consideration. The studio acquired the book in December 2010, and its success lifted plans for the project to head toward production. In 2014, UNBROKEN was released, earning $163 million worldwide at the box office.
About This Production Pure Flix, The WTA Group and Universal 1440 Entertainment present a Matt Baer Films production: UNBROKEN: PATH TO REDEMPTION, starring Samuel Hunt and Merritt Patterson. The casting is by Nancy Nayor, CSA, and the music is by Brandon Roberts. UNBROKEN: PATH TO REDEMPTION’s costume designer is Diane Crooke, and the film’s editor is Amy P. McGrath. Its production designer is Mayne Berke, and its director of photography is Zoran Popovic. The drama’s executive producers are Bill Reeves, Erik Weir, Michael Scott, Dave Mechem, Cynthia Garris and Luke Zamperini, and it is produced by Matthew Baer, p.g.a., and Mike Elliott. UNBROKEN: PATH TO REDEMPTION is based on the book by Laura Hillenbrand. The screenplay is by Richard Friedenberg and Ken Hixon. The film is directed by Harold Cronk.
With the success of UNBROKEN, producer Matthew Baer went to Universal 1440 Entertainment, wanting to tell the post-war aftermath of Louis Zamperini’s remarkable life. “Lou’s story is an embarrassment of cinematic riches, from when he was a young boy until he was 97,” says Baer. “We had tried versions of the first screenplay that included his post-war experience, but the difficulty in making a film version, is once Lou is freed from the Japanese prison camp, it wasn’t possible to have a stronger emotional climax than his return to Torrance. We were not able to make a three-hour version of the film and there was no way to have the female lead, Cynthia, come into the film after two hours. My feeling, and hope, was if UNBROKEN was successful, I’d get the chance the tell Lou’s post-war journey in a way that does it justice.”
The WTA Group was involved with the home entertainment release of UNBROKEN and helped lead the creation of a bonus disc that was included alongside the film to tell the “rest of the story” of Zamperini’s life through archive video footage from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Additionally, the company assisted with the development of a special Christian retail edition. That product sold well, confirming that people wanted the rest of the story.
In 2015, The WTA Group executives Bill Reeves and Dave Mechem met with Glenn Ross, General Manager and Executive Vice President of Universal 1440 Entertainment, to encourage the idea of a film that would tell the rest of Hillenbrand’s book.
“We explained that the millions who read Laura Hillenbrand’s bestselling book or saw the first film, UNBROKEN, know and love this next part of Louie’s story,” says Reeves, president of The WTA Group. “For Zamperini fans, UNBROKEN: PATH TO REDEMPTION shares that next chapter of his astonishing life and his inspirational love story.”
Glenn Ross and Universal 1440 Entertainment agreed the story needed to be told, met with Baer, and development on a new screenplay began, along with bringing aboard director Harold Cronk.
“From the overwhelmingly positive and passionate reaction to UNBROKEN, we believed there was an audience out there eager to see Louie and Cynthia fight and overcome an entirely different set of challenging circumstances,” says Ross.
“The hunger for quality films that contain faith has been proven time and again in the past few years,” says Executive Producer Michael Scott, CEO and co-founder Pure Flix. “That audience very much wants to see the redemption story in Louie’s life on screen.”
“The first film was about Lou’s struggle to survive. This chapter is about the battle for his soul and the incredibly powerful message of forgiveness. Once we can accept that we are broken and allow ourselves to receive grace, we are finally free to offer it to others,” says Cronk.
Screenwriter Richard Friedenberg says, “The heroism of Louie Zamperini, his adventure from the downing of his bomber to his rescue from a Japanese P.O.W. camp, is the stuff of a legend. But what comes after, the story of his return, his heartbreaking struggle, his recovery and ultimate redemption is what attracted me to Laura Hillenbrand’s book. We see in Louie’s conflict so many parallels to the soldiers who continue to return from our present wars, and through his pain and strength we understand the sacrifice every one of them has made.”
Screenwriter Ken Hixon shares, “I was attracted to Lou’s story: the power of second chances and the courage it takes to overcome often insurmountable odds. I also wanted to depict how love at first sight can evolve into a durable, long-lived relationship.”
For Will Graham, the grandson of Billy Graham, the film shines a deserved light on the now- famous 1949 Los Angeles Crusade. Will Graham is an evangelist with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and plays his grandfather in UNBROKEN: PATH TO REDEMPTION.
“It’s hard to overstate how important the 1949 Crusade was to my grandaddy,” Will Graham says. “Of course, it was of eternal significance to Louie and Cynthia Zamperini and thousands more like them who accepted Christ as a result of granddaddy’s preaching. But Billy Graham was an unknown, a nobody before that Crusade. It was the publisher William Randolph Hearst, who, after three weeks of the Crusade generating no interest, told his editors to ‘puff Graham.’ They put him on the front page and the rest of the media followed.”
Design, Locations and Shooting
“Never give up, no matter what. Even if you get to last place, finish.” —Louie Zamperini
Production began on UNBROKEN: PATH TO REDEMPTION on September 5, 2017, at Universal Studios and wrapped on September 29, 2017, after 20 days of filming. Locations included Oxnard Beach, Verdugo High School and Cal Poly Pomona campus, where buildings resembling California in the 1940s were utilized.
“UNBROKEN captured the hearts of moviegoers worldwide and garnered several Oscar® nominations,” Producer Mike Elliott says. “The bar was set high for UNBROKEN: PATH TO REDEMPTION.”
Director Harold Cronk says, “We were able to assemble a team of supremely talented crew members who were committed to telling Louie’s story the right way. Developing and executing a plan to visually communicate Louie’s internal struggles required a tremendous amount of work with the writers. Then came the equally difficult task of finding the actor who was up to the challenge of bringing Louie’s story to life in a way that honored his remarkable journey. Samuel Hunt’s immersive and inspired portrayal of Louie Zamperini does just that.”
Director of Photography Zoran Popovic says, “The biggest challenge of making a period film are the angles on the exterior locations. We had to be very careful where to point the camera. Lots of shots were composed having the CGI enhancement in mind. We added old LA in the background and made Oxnard look like Miami Beach, Florida.”
Costume Designer Diane Crooke adds, “We used actual period costumes of course, so the majority are over 70 years old. Having such affection and respect for the period, special handling and care was required to uphold the integrity of the wardrobe.”
About the Cast “The world, we’d discovered, doesn’t love you like your family loves you.” —Louie Zamperini
Director Cronk and producers Baer, Elliott and Universal 1440 Entertainment were keenly aware of how important the casting choice would be to deliver on Louis and Cynthia’s powerful story for the finished film. Elliott remarks, “Casting was a challenge from the start. We had an entirely new movie but didn’t know how we would replace the original UNBROKEN cast. Would the audience reject new fresh faces? We think we succeeded thanks to an exhaustive nationwide search, and a lot of hard work by our team at Nancy Nayor Casting. We sincerely believe the new cast members are going to steal some hearts.”
