Aziraphale has just tucked himself in, ready for a long, cozy night of reading, when he hears it. It's not much, just a short, sharp inhale of breath from the demon sleeping beside him, but it's enough to put Aziraphale instantly on alert.

Crowley is having a nightmare.

He doesn't have them very often, thank goodness. Much as the demon enjoys a good kip, he doesn't indulge every night. And when he does sleep, he doesn't usually dream-- just takes a brief, peaceful dip into the waters of oblivion. (Aziraphale still doesn't understand the appeal, but Crowley seems to find it refreshing.)

But sometimes, for no reason either of them can understand... he dreams. And those dreams are, more often than not, unpleasant.

He can see all the telltale signs now; the tight set of Crowley's shoulders, and a tension around his jaw that means he's gritting his teeth. His knuckles are white where he clutches at the blankets, and there's a faint scattering of scales across his skin--an unconscious attempt to defend himself.

It's enough to make his own chest ache in sympathy. Aziraphale yearns to reach out to Crowley, to gather him in his arms and sooth his fears away with gentle touch, but he holds himself back. He has learned the hard way that touch can do more harm than good in these moments. So instead he watches carefully, trying to determine what sort of nightmare this will be; what help Crowley will need.
