Okay, so... Transformers don't reproduce like organics in most continuities, and as a result, their concept of love is a lot more queerplatonic than most humans, with two transformers being in a relationship, but not having the... the same instincts towards grooming or pack bonding as humans. The transformer equivalent of a married couple is just two friends who have the same level of closeness and intertwined lives as an (ideal) married couple.

In most canons, Optimus Prime and Megatron used to be such a pair. Orion Pax (Optimus's old name before he became a Prime) was extremely close with Megatron, with Orion often being the political theory scholar to Megatron's people's revolutionary leader. The two lived, worked, and existed as a pair.

And then something went horribly wrong, and Orion Pax became Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots, while Megatron became the aggressive, ruthless, dictatorial leader of the Decepticons, the two factions fighting a bitter civil war since before the human bronze age. The exact details depend on the canon- for example, in the Prime continuity, Megatron was both upstaged as a leader by Optimus (who used reasoned debate to change the minds of the current regime, though how successful it was in the end is sketchy) and decided to inject himself with artificial dark energon, causing his worst personality traits to come to the forefront. In the Transformers One movie, Orion Pax and D16 (as Megatron was known before he became the leader of the Decepticons) were both miners who found out the truth of their lack of ability to transform and the reason why their society existed the way it did, except Orion Pax was outraged at the harm and suffering caused by it all, while D16 fully bought into the fascist regime's ideals and was only outraged at having been personally wronged, two very different ways of seeing the world that were only able to love one another beforehand because they didn't think anything outside the status quo was possible.

Optimus Prime is, essentially, divorced from Megatron, with their former relationship being the equivalent a housewife who settled for a monster because she didn't realize the full depths of his rage and ego, only to have him turn it on her and her to get backup from her friends and family to make sure he fucks off- except now he won't stop stalking her, and worse, the company he runs and the local police are all on his side.

we need more divorcebaiting. how strongly can canon imply (without technically outright stating) that these two characters are bitterly, acrimoniously divorced? essential we explore this
