people who are only capable of viewing the world through fandom or have books-are-just-for-entertainment brainrot should be physically restrained from reviewing dark/slow/literary books that actually have something to say... *sobbing* you are all so stupid...

I never seem to post about my life these days but things are still going well, I just never hit the sweet spot of "enough time to write posts + enough energy to write posts" but I still love my job and I also love choir now that it's back on again. Just this evening I did the thing where I remember to listen to a recording of the thing we're rehearsing if I wasn't really familiar with it before:
youtube
You guys. I get to sing this.
Actually we rehearsed this movement at tempo last night and I think I sprained something. We're singing it in English and it doesn't sound quite as cool in English, but it's still an absolute blast.
I suspect that the choice of English is a pointed one, though: the piece is about a group of friendly neighborhood pagans who get one over on their Christian oppressors by scaring them off so they can worship in peace (that's what the movement in the video is) and sort of accidentally invent Walpurgisnacht. Given that my state is one of the ones where certain types of Christian are going aggressively after our personal and civil liberties, I think that's why we're doing it in English, to make the point clearer to the audience. So I think that's an okay counterbalance to the aesthetic loss incurred by not singing in German.

this movie showcases a protagonist who truly believes that acab, something brutal happened to her daughter and she sees them do next to nothing about it. she is a very in your face kind of person played wonderfully by frances mcdormand, and i love how martin macdonagh films touch on dark topics but dont feel like dark movies overall, his sense of humour is great and this film really delves deep into the characters and mantains quite a realistic tone throughout with a gorgeous colour palette
really good movie 10/10

Stoner by John Williams
What a beautifully written novel. I’m not sure that I would agree with those that say it’s the best novel ever written but it is a very good one. Stoner by John Williams
Written in 1965 and set between 1910 and the mid 1950s in Missouri, it covers a time of enormous change in the world, including two World Wars, and yet William Stoner’s life does not seem to reflect these external changes as he lives in his insular academic life.
There are moments of hope in the book that we, the reader, believe Stoner’s life is about to get a well deserved break but ultimately, despite his protestations to the contrary, it is such a sad story and I certainly cried more than once while reading it.
Beautifully written, (as I have said), highly recommended.

"milk fed" by melissa broder
Tumblr media
read: december 2022.
time taken to read: 3 days.
disclaimer: not quite a review.
this is one of those books that you read for the human experience. it delicately--yet bluntly--discusses sexuality, eating disorders, narcissistic mothers (and, subsequently, learning to mother yourself after their impact), religion, and politics. if you ever wanted to write something about human relationships, broder's lyricism is a good jumping off point.

REVIEW: Tri States Wrestling - King of Missouri Tournament (2024)
A Live Professional Wrestling Event I mentioned in a previous review that Tri States Wrestling’s late September event, Hornet Havoc, felt like a fitting “season finale” for the promotion in 2024. However, it wasn’t their last hurrah for the year. They held a show in Iowa a few weeks ago (sadly out of my travel range), as well as an intriguing tournament event in Bethany, Missouri, that served as…

Travels from Texas to Missouri
On our road trips through or out of Texas, we always find a Bucees. I always vow to never go back because of how crowded they are and how rude the customers are; however, we end up going back. The bathrooms & gas are the main reasons. We can’t go there with my middle son because he has autism (and schizoaffective). Bucees isn’t sensory-friendly so it is too much for my son to handle. He has a…

REVIEW: Tri States Wrestling - Hornet Havoc (2024)
A Live Professional Wrestling Event Throughout this year, I’ve written extensively about the trials and tribulations of The Iceman—a wrestler who had it all in 2023. He first claimed victory in a street fight against “Black Diamond” Luke Langley, securing the old TSW Championship and carrying it through the summer. Eventually, he lost that title to Franco Varga but bounced back by defeating…

Hi! *waves*
You have a lot of artwork set during the 1800s; I was wondering if you could recommend any "bibles" of the 1800s or the Georgian era, please? I have a project that I'm thinking of setting during the period but I'm not sure how to begin my research.
My story will be set in England initially, then go onto India and all over the world
Alright, so— Right off the bat I will admit my research has mainly focused on Finland in any given era, so I haven't read extensively or bookmarked resources as for England (let alone the rest of the world). BUT, I do have some for the purpose of filling in the blanks in the settings, since my country is small and material isn’t in abundance (not like when it comes to the big empires, anyway) sadly this list will be very brief, as I generally deal with my lack of knowledge on any given issue by browsing the web/library and piecing together stuff from multiple sources some of which are very granular (or worse, in FINNISH). I also deal in pictures and dialogue for the most part, which is why majority of this is imagebased.
A BOOK:
The Time Traveller’s Guide to Regency Britain by Ian Mortimer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
probably goes into category of a ‘bible’ u mentioned, covers multiple bases as far as setting goes in an easily digestible manner (that list of contents looking pretty good yeah?). Ive the audiobook version and it was a pleasant listen too.
I also appear to have a book by the name The Regency Years by Robert Morrison in my audiobook library, but I have no recollection of actually listening to it. The reviews were good tho.
THAT ONE RANDOM LINK IN MY BOOKMARKS:
Prices and Wages by Decade (University of Missouri Libraries) what it says on the tin, spanning from 1700s-2000s, while us-centric, it does have subsections for different countries with dedicated resources to varying degrees
ART & FASHION:
Fashion History Timeline
Tumblr media
goes over western fashion history from ancient to now, pleasantly detailed and starting from 15th century it goes decade by decade
The Met Collection
Tumblr media
as the landing page says. I have looked in the costume institute section a bunch to understand garments or fill in what I cant find in fashion plates, like underwear
The Met Museum Costume Institute Fashion Plates
Tumblr media
a digital collection of fashion plate illustrations that has pretty well spanned the 1800s and early 1900s wherein I mingle. Requires a bit of browsing, as the subcollection list is long and sometimes they span a bunch of decades at once, but at least the pictures are big and often have dates imposed in the corners of the illustrations
AND HEY, IF ANYONE READS IN FINNISH, ABOUT FINLAND:
Kristiina Kalleinen Valtioaamun aika : Suomen Suuriruhtinaskunta 1809-1863
Topi Artukka: Tanssiva Kaupunki : Turun seurapiiri sosiaalisena näyttämönä 1810-luvulla
Piia Einonen & Miikka Voutilainen (toim.): Suomen sodan jälkeen : 1800-luvun alun yhteiskuntahistoria
Hannu Rinne: Perinnemestarin tyylikirja : Talon osat aikakausittain 1700-1970
and whew HERE WE ARE AT THE END. i hope u will find at least some of this helpful and best of luck with ur project! <3 (and if anyone knows of more resources, drop em in responses or reblogs i would personally love to reference/bookmark more stuff in the future)
