The Midnight Hour: You and Me and the Moon (Kill the Moon)
For as long as humans (or Canis lupus sapiens like me) have lived on this planet, we have always been fascinated by the moon. When Neil Armstrong first went there in 1969 aboard Apollo 11, it was rightly hailed as a momentous first step in creating a future like the one seen in shows like Star Trek – the original series, through sheer happenstance, came to an end just weeks before the moon…

This poster makes The Midnight Hour looks way cooler than it is. Still: gosh what a fun movie! It’s not scary, it’s not funny, it’s not novel, but it’s nice and pleasant and for a 1985 ABC TV Movie it has at least two really beautiful sequences. Kurtwood Smith’s in this, too. Just a cute surprise.

The light— greened by the ivy trailing over the window—lends the kitchen a pond like tinge, the air a watery quiver.

Private detective musings:
"As Emma manoeuvred the pushchair off the bus—watched interestedly by the conductor, who did not offer to help—she had reflected that, in books, you rarely read about a private investigator who was hampered by a baby and its accoutrements. Alcoholism, yes. Vindictive exwife, yes. Murdered girlfriend, yes. Childcare problems, no. But fictional detectives, private and otherwise, were almost always men. Their children, if they had them, were strictly background material."

I rewatched The Midnight Hour for the first time in a while and oooh boy is it different watching Kurtwood Smith with a queer lens.
