Maybe its just me but I think its really fucked up that the only way teachers can "help" a child is with cps and the fucking police. I think its really fucked up that they're constantly talking about "tell a trusted adult" when sometimes you just don't fucking have one. Because all of them were bad options. I think its fucked up that my, and many many many children's only fucking options have been tell someone and put everything in danger or do nothing and continue on in silence. I think its fucked up that even without saying it I had to start understanding that no matter how kinda a teacher, or counselor, or school staff member was to me at times, that they would never put me over them being held liable or their job. I would never be that important. They get to pat themselves on the back while I get put in handcuffs and put treated like an example of what not to do as if im not even there. I think its really fucked up that at a certain point it will never matter how nice a teacher is, no matter how many "I know it sucks...." or "I'm sorry but it's my job..."s or "I don't want to have to do this..."s you get, because its always the same fucking thing. Your a liability, and no adult is going to risk their job with a child that they could easily just hand to someone else more 'qualified' to handle.
#how do i tag this#kinda a vent#Kinda a rant about the system in general#all cops are bastards#fuck cops#Teachers can be fucking assholes#education system#Cps is also shit#Fuck psychiatry too#I know they're important but like#Mandated reporters can be fucking assholes#'Tell a trusted adult'#Ok then give me an adult to trust bitch#Give the a child someone they can actually fucking trust#God people are assholes to kids#youth liberation#Oh yeah this also has to do with child abuse#And neglect#And being mentally ill as a child#Like the moment your situation crosses the threshold into abuse then you actually have zero trusted adults#And no matter how nice they are you have to train yourself to never talk to them#Because then everything goes bad#Because in the end your nothing more than a liability.

"What are you guys gonna draw? I went shopping with my mommy and she got me new shoes so I'm gonna draw the shoes! They light up when I run fast and they have Elsa on."
"That's so cool! I went to my aunty and uncle's house for my cousin's birthday party, he's 6 now and his cake looked like a car! He got a racecar set too, I think he likes cars. What did you do, Mandy?"
"I looked after Neveah and Travis! My mommy was at work and my big brother went to his friend's house so I got to do it all by myself like a big kid! Normally Tyson makes us mac and cheese or something for lunch but he said I'm too little and I might burn myself so I made sandwiches for me and Neveah instead. I gave Travis his bottle too!"
"You can stay home all by yourself? Sometimes my mommy and daddy go out, but then my babysitter-"
"Sofia, Nia, you girls start drawing your pictures, ok? Mandy, you come over here for a minute."
"Am I in trouble, Ms Fisher? I'm really sorry, I promise I won't do it again."
"You're really not in trouble, sweetheart. I just want to hear more about what you did this weekend. Can you tell me what you just told Sofia and Nia?"
"Oh, I looked after my little brother and sister! Mommy was at work and Daddy was busy so I was helping! Normally my brother looks after them, but he went to Jaxon's house so I was a big girl and did it by myself. I made cereal for me and Neveah when we woke up, and I gave Travis his bottle. Neveah wanted to watch TV but we're not allowed to do that when Daddy's home 'cuz it's too noisy and he was in his bedroom. So we played with the dolls instead, and then I had to change Travis because he had a stinky butt! And then it was lunch so I made ham sandwiches, they were yummy. Daddy left when we were eating lunch, I think he was going to the store. So then we watched TV until he came back, and then Mommy came home from work. I was so helpful, when Daddy got back he said I was a good girl!"
"Thank you so much for telling me, Mandy. Do you want to tell me anything else about home?"
"Did I say something wrong, Ms Fisher? You look sad, I didn't wanna make you sad!"
"You didn't say anything wrong, sweetheart. You were really brave for telling me that, ok? You can go back to your drawing now if you don't have anything else say about it,

being in a social work masters program as a marginalized person who is ages ahead in theory and experience in comparison to your (white, privileged, rich) cohort is a fucking minefield. solidarity for all and every other marginalized person in these fucking micro aggressive and liberal ass social work programs.
#muerto talks#i mean like yea. of course this would happen#didnt matter if i went to nyu or school in philly#white women flock to social work programs because theyre not smart enough for nursing programs#sure youre not commiting elder abuse as an rn but youre a mandated reporter in communities youve never spoken to until now lol#its been quite isolating here and im not afraid to be myself and speak up in class but the fucking thank yous i get from white women#make me wanna bite a rock man#id much rather u call me a slur at this point#at the very least my field placement is in a bipoc space with bipoc staff#godspeed to all other marginalized people in these masters programs........

I think the biggest mistake they made writing was was letting Ted have a happy ending in Kansas, not knowing he is complicit in Jamie's suffering.
People don't want to hear this, but there was literally nothing else Ted could have or should have done to stop Jamie from being abused. At the end of the day, Jamie is an adult with free will (like. Within the narrative, obviously Jamie the character doesn't have free will), and you can't force an adult to leave a situation they're not ready to leave.
Actually, the BEST thing you can do for an adult who's being abused is to consistently be present and supportive + offer them a safe space where they can go when they're ready to leave the situation, and that was exactly what Ted did in bringing Jamie back to Richmond. Being able to get away from James and Manchester probably saved Jamie's life and there's definitely something to be said for Ted's role in that
In my opinion, Ted's biggest shortcomings with Jamie were situations where he was trying to intervene and wound up giving dumb ass advice that he was not qualified to give as he is neither a professional nor a survivor of abuse. The savior complex was not helpful
#ask#I think people think of a coach + a player + an abusive parent and kind of subconsciously translate that to a situation involving a child#and that's where the idea that Ted should've Done More comes from#if Jamie was ten years old and Ted was his mandated reporter youth couch it would be a very very different situation where Ted absolutely#would be obligated to step in and do everything in his power to make sure Jamie was safe#but it's just not like that where an adult victim is concerned

Uhh I understand this is a heavy subject so you don't n3ed to answer
I asked because I'm just wondering if teachers like actually care. About their students. Like do they care I'd they wanna kill th3mselves because of how much stress they're under
In my experience, absolutely. I work with college students, usually freshman, and even though I don't work with them as much a their professors do I definitely care about them and want what's best for them and if they were in a mental health crisis I would do whatever I could to help. The same is true for all the professors in my department, you just don't dedicate your life to teaching without getting attached to your students.
I'm working on a history masters right now so a lot of my classmates are high school teachers and they love their kids, too. Even more than professors, I think, because their students need more support than college students do.
Teachers generally don't get to design their own lesson plans-- if you're in middle or high school, chances are your teacher hates the lesson plans just as much as you do. What they can do is offer support. I've seen students get reduced workloads because they were going through health problems (mental or physical) and I've known teachers to keep a secret stash of mental health resources in their classrooms in case they notice a student struggling.
Not all teachers are perfect and I can not promise you that your teachers are like mine or like my colleagues, but in my experience the kinds of people who go into teaching often do it because they care deeply about their students.
Also, speaking as someone who works in education, school is never more important than your own health. If you need to let your grades drop for a bit to give yourself room to breath, then do that. I'd recommend talking to your teachers and/or guidance counselor about it but even if you can't bring yourself to do that please remember that you are more important than any number on a report card.
#Teachers and counselors are mandated reporters in the United States#If you tell a faculty member that you are considering suicide they will be required to tell someone#Ideally that would get you the help you need but you know your environment better than I do and I trust you to know if that's safe for you#But if you just tell your teacher or counselor that you're struggling with the workload and outside health issues they will often be#Willing to work with you#And if not you are still more important than your school work#I promise your high school GPA doesn't matter as much as they tell you it does#Even if you're trying to get into college there are options to make getting in easier even if you had a rough go of it In high school

Illinois has a law that anyone working at a college or university has to get mandated reporter training, which makes sense for a lot of people, but I'm going into a fish bio job. The only youths I'll be interacting with will have gills

Yesterday I was undergoing yet another training for my job and they said that we weren’t allowed to make reports of abuse if a parent was disciplining their child with the use of corporal punishment “because parents had every right to discipline their children as they please” and that we couldn’t call in and make a report of there was no visible evidence of injury. They gave us a scenario as well about a teenage girl whose mom slapped her across the face in order to discipline her.. one of the people on the call with me answered the question (what should we do in this situation) and said that we wouldn’t do anything because if she was being disrespectful her parent had every right to discipline her. Corporal punishment should be illegal, you should not be putting your hands on your children in any way shape or form whether that causes severe or minor injury or not. If you can’t communicate properly or teach a lesson without putting your hands on your child you’re a dumbass.

Much respect, but I need to say that the anti-psychiatry crowd is so full of shit that even when they make good points they drown themselves out with other bat-fuckery.

Havin a bad day, y'all.
Like is this normal?? For jobs not to give you a specific location until after you've gone through the onboarding / hiring shit, only to place you over an hour away? Like a full bus and BART ride? I'm having to quit this job before I even start it because they never communicated to me that I'd be placed that far away from the Inner Richmond district of SF. Am I the asshole here or is this ridiculous
#yall I completed a 4 hour mandated reporter class for this#I did a background check for this#I was about to go get a TB shot and get my doctor to fill out a health report for this#all to put me in fucking DALY CITY???#I turned down like three other job offers from that area because it's such a ridiculous commute for a carless person#I'm only commuting over an hour for like...publishing industry jobs#not childcare stuff#personal
