What happened on Namek ? Is this where Brolu got his scar and paragus died ?
Nope! Well - nope to half of it.
If i remember correctly, for the The Legendary Super Saiyan and the Power of Friendship story, Broly gets his scar froooom...
LAUNCH!
On a planet I named Tegerian. Paragus had tricked Trunks and co. to 'help' him defeat the remnants of Frieza's forces there. Really, it was just so they can die there.
Broly is able to fight some of Paragus's control save them - but eventually he snaps and tries killing EVERYONE. (I think the cew realized he was under his control and took the crown off - but it ended up backfiring)
Launch manages to land a hit and Paragus flees. They stay on the planet to recover.
There's a whole arc with training on Tegerian and then going to earth and finding out about Cell. Then Launch dies and Cell dies and the crew goes off to find New Namek...
Where there's a fight between Cooler, Paragus, Broly and Trunks! Yay. Stuff happens and Paragus and Cooler die there. Wishes are made and everyone is brought back to life so they all return to earth for Peace Times.

Continuity Note: This story This story takes place about 1000 years before 66 years after 1000 years before the events of Dragon Ball Z.
[12 March 238 Before Age. Dorlu Prime.]
Luffa had once been the Legendary Super Saiyan, until the Demon God Demigra offered her a chance to do it all over again. She found herself in a new history, where the alien hordes who captured and tortured her were all dead. With the Tikosi's extinction, and Luffa's foreknowledge of events to come, she had a chance to live her life the way she had always wanted. All of the friends, the love, the triumphs, with none of the loss, the regrets, the tragedies.
Or so it had seemed.
She was still trying to decide whether to accept Demigra's truce. His terms were simple. If she agreed to remain in this new reality, he would leave her alone. But if she refused to accept his triumphant ascension to godhood, then Luffa could confront him for one final battle. She only had to take the magic scroll he had left for her, and she would instantly travel from her world to his. Since that path lay open to her, she decided to take her time and see what this new world had to offer.
At first, it had seemed like a dream come true. She was back on Dorlu Prime, where she had spent her teenage years guarding the planet as a mercenary. Her treacherous father had left the planet in a profound despair. His plans for the future had died with the Tikosi, and only Luffa knew just how shaken this had left him. That suited her well, as it meant she could chart her own course without him.
Keda was alive in this world, still a healthy nine-year-old child, unaffected by the terrible conflicts that only Luffa could now remember. The same was true for Zatte, the captain of the Dorlun militia. In this era, she had been Luffa's best friend, although later they would fall in love and marry. However, in this era, Luffa was still married to her first husband, Kandai.
Luffa's plan was fuzzy in places, but the basic goal was to divide her time between the Dorlu Colony and finding mercenary work in the surrounding space sectors. That way, she could still have Zatte and Keda in her life, without taking them away from their home. From there, Luffa could reach out to other close friends she had made in the old reality. It would be a challenge to make contact with them all and befriend them all over again, but Luffa cared for them too much to simply ignore them.
But that part of the plan had ended before it could truly begin. She had contacted Dr. Topsas on Plutark VII, hoping to strike up a friendship with him while he put her in contact with Wampaaan'riix. Instead, he informed her that Wampaaan'riix had been killed in a Deathmatch tournament.
This had been a huge blow to Luffa, who had never even considered the possibility. In the old reality, Wampaaan'riix had survived the tournament, thanks to Luffa's refusal to kill him. This time, she had skipped the tournament, never suspecting that her Yetitan friend might lose his life to some other opponent.
After hearing the news, she was inconsolable for hours. The worst part was that she couldn't even tell anyone what was bothering her. There was no way to explain it.
In the old reality, she might have commiserated with Zatte through her telepathic abilities, which had become much more sophisticated after Luffa became a Super Saiyan. But in this reality, Luffa was still at the power level she had been at the age of nineteen. Telepathy on that level, with an alien, was impossible.
And eventually, after Luffa had neglected enough mealtimes in her despair, it was Kandai who reached out to comfort her. He didn't know why she was upset. Indeed, she had been distant towards him for days without any apparent reason. But he still knew how to charm her, and how to get her to vent her emotions without hearing the context behind them.
The answer was combat.
Their battleground was on the far side of the planet. Dorlu Prime was mostly a primeval wilderness covered in sparse vegetation and inhospitable wastes. The Dorluns had grand dreams for the planet, but their colony was only a tiny speck of civilization on an otherwise uninhabited world. And so it was easy for Luffa and Kandai to find a suitable place to fight without damaging anything important.
It was a one-sided affair. At her present level, Luffa's powers were no match for Kandai's, but that didn't stop her from hitting him with everything she had. As for Kandai, he held back, allowing Luffa to fight to her fullest without shutting her down too quickly. He still fought back, but only to keep her motivated to try harder.
In the end, Luffa put everything she had left into a final assault, charging all of her power into the fingertips of her left hand, and firing a focused beam of ki at his heart. But he was too fast to hit, and before she could react, he was grasping her by the wrist and spoiling her aim. She tried to headbutt him, only for Kandai to use his free hand to deliver a chop to her neck. Luffa collapsed to the ground in a heap. She was still conscious, but too weary to move.
"Not bad, Luffa," he said as he alighted beside her. "I guess training those blue folks really helped you improve."
"Th-thank you," Luffa said between gasps. When she finally found the strength to roll over onto her back, she saw Kandai had lain down beside her.
"Something's got you all riled up," Kandai said. "I don't know what it is, and I guess you're never gonna tell me, but I could sense it in those punches of yours. Oh, and that red laser beam thing you just used a minute ago. Where'd you learn that one?"
"Long... story..." Luffa said.
"Yeah, well your emotions were all over the place," Kandai said. "It's like you wanted revenge for something, and I don't even know what for. If I didn't know better, I'd think you wanted me dead."
"Maybe..." Luffa said with a bitter chuckle.
"Whatever it is, I'm sorry, okay?" Kandai said.
With a loud grunt, Luffa sat upright, and began grabbing at her black, sleeveless shirt.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"The same thing we always do after we spar," Luffa said as she pulled the shirt over her head and tossed it to the side. "Unless you're not up for it."
"Well, yeah, but I didn't think you'd be in the mood," Kandai said. "You haven't been... I mean, for the last month or so..."
Luffa started taking off her boots next. "I know. I've had a lot on my mind, that's all. And... and..."
He kissed her before she had to struggle to find the words that she couldn't say. Luffa returned his embrace, and they continued on in this way, lying in the crater they had made in the dusty wastes.
She was conflicted about making love to him this way. She was married to him in this world, but in the old reality, they had become enemies, and she had pledged herself to Zatte. It felt wrong to pursue her feelings towards either one, but after the news about Wampaaan'riix, she couldn't stand the isolation any longer. She needed to be held, and to be reassured, and Kandai could understand her without the need for words.
Later, as she lay beside him, her head cradled between his chest and his arm, she decided to ask the question. "Did you know my father was negotiating with the Tikosi?"
"What?" he asked, somewhat drowsily.
"I found out," she said. "Don't ask me how. He was plotting something with them. That's why he was so grim after he found out they were all dead."
"You're kidding, right?" Kandai asked. "No... no, you're serious, aren't you? Well, no. He never said anything to me about it. What the hell were we doing during all those patrols then?"
"They wanted a Saiyan specimen," Luffa said. "That's what the Tikosi would do. They wanted the Dorluns to study their abilities, and they wanted to study our zenkai."
"Luffa, why are you telling me this now?" Kandai asked.
"Because I want a straight answer," Luffa replied. "And you're a lousy liar after we've... well, you know."
"No! He never said anything about this," Kandai said. "What, you think he was going to hand me over to them?"
"I don't know," Luffa lied. "He might have had someone else in mind. Maybe even me."
"You're his daughter."
"So tell me," Luffa said. "If it had been me, he would have had say something to you, sooner or later. Would you have gone along with it?"
"The Tikosi are dead," Kandai said. "Your dad's long gone."
"Answer the question," Luffa insisted.
He sighed, then said: "Well yeah, I probably would have. I mean, what else could I do? Fight your dad and take on all the Tikosi all by myself? I'd just get us both killed."
As chilling as the answer was, Luffa found the honesty refreshing. "I see your point," was all she could think of to say.
"I mean, what would you do if they had picked me instead?" Kandai asked. "You're telling me you'd rush off and die in a fight you knew you couldn't win?"
Luffa was about to say that she would, without question. Her pride as a Saiyan would have demanded it, and the example set by the tales of the Old Heroes would have inspired her to fight in spite of the odds. She had proven her convictions time and again during he career as the Legendary Super Saiyan.
But then she thought of Demigra's truce, and how she still hadn't decided whether or not she would accept it. The conflict with Demigra seemed pointless now. The Time Patrol no longer existed, and the history they had fought for was already gone. How would the Old Heroes of Saiyan Legend have dealt with that?
"I think, once, I would have died for you without hesitation," Luffa said. "Now... I'm not so sure."
"So it's this business with your dad that's been bothering you this whole time," Kandai said. "And you were worried that I was in cahoots with him."
"Let's just say I've been rethinking my whole life," Luffa said. "And I'm seeing everyone I know with a new perspective."
"Oh yeah? And what do you see in me?" Kandai asked.
"You're a pushover," Luffa said.
"Hmph. Yeah, I suppose you've got me there."
"You said before you prefer to go with the flow, that you prefer to be a follower. The truth is you're just a doormat. You'll play along with whoever offers you the safest or most profitable path."
"I never pretended otherwise," Kandai said.
"You're probably right," Luffa said. "I just assumed you were more principled than that. I saw something noble in you, but that was only what I wanted to see. I put you on a pedestal because you were so much stronger than me. The ideal man."
"You weren't complaining a few minutes ago, when I was--"
"Yeah, yeah, you do that part just fine," Luffa said with a wry smile. "I guess I let that cloud my perception too.
"So we can call it off here," Kandai said. "If that's what you want. No hard feelings. Strictly business between us from here on out."
"I didn't say I wanted that," Luffa said.
"Then what do you want?" Kandai asked. "You've always had this glint in your eye, Luffa. Like you craved something with all your heart, and you could never put it into words. So how do we get it for you? You always talked about starting a family, but... well, I think we already know how to do that."
Luffa sat up and looked around for her clothes. "I... I think we should head back to the settlement," she said.
"What's the matter?"
"Nothing!" she said, more anxiously than she wanted to sound. "I just... remembered I needed to check on something."
*******
Luffa did not spend long in the settlement, and headed directly for the Saiyans' ship. She fetched the medical scanner, and waved it around herself. She had done this before, but only to investigate the lack of certain scars on her body. Now, she understood that Demigra had somehow transported her into her younger body, that was no longer a mystery. But something Kandai had said to her in the wastes had convinced her to perform a more thorough examination.
The results were as she suspected, but before she could truly react, she heard Zatte and Kandai on board. They were looking for her, and so she stepped out to greet them.
"I just got back from meeting with the Elders," Zatte said. "It's not perfect, but I think I have a way to join your crew, Luffa."
Luffa was confused for a moment. She had completely forgotten Zatte's report to her superiors.
"Wow, you really worked her over, huh?" Zatte said to Kandai as she pointed at several scrapes and bruises on Luffa's arms and head. "I could sense you two going at it all the way from here."
"Whoa whoa! Hey...!" Kandai said. "You could tell we were--?! Oh, wait, you meant fighting. Well, yeah. Sometimes a little spar is the best way to get out of a funk."
"Sure, it's just weird to see Luffa be the one who gets all worn out," Zatte said. "I can come back later."
"No, it's fine," Luffa said. "The Dorlun Elders. What did they say?"
"In principle, they like the idea of a Dorlun operative maintaining a presence in space," Zatte began. "The problem is that I have obligations here, to this place. I'm not at liberty to explain that, but I can't just be re-assigned offworld so easily."
"So they want some other Dorlun to go with us instead?" Kandai asked. "That wasn't the idea. It's you or nobody."
"That's what I told them," Zatte said. "And they agree, I'm the best qualified for the position. The Elders just don't like one Dorlun running off by herself with a pair of aliens. But I've read the Holybook, and I think there's a way to flip this around to satisfy them."
"Holybook?" Kandai asked.
"Their religious text," Luffa said.
"Oh."
"Basically, if there was a familial connection between us, that would clear everything up. A legal relationship-- like adoption or marriage-- can be just as valid as blood." Zatte paused and looked at them both before continuing. "All right, so this might be a little too radical for you Saiyans, but hear me out. If I was married into your family, then I would have sufficient justification to go with you, and the Elders would approve of my transfer."
"What?" Luffa asked.
"Married to who?" Kandai asked.
"Well, Luffa," Zatte said. "I mean, scripturally, it could be to either one of you, but you're not my type, Kandai. No offense."
"Are you out of your mind?" Luffa exclaimed. She pointed at Zatte, then at Kansai. "I can't marry you, I'm already married!"
"No, this could work," Kandai said. He began to rub his hand over his chin as he considered it. "Once we make it official, we're free and clear, aren't we?"
"That's right," Zatte said. "The marriage itself is the thing. Once that's accomplished, well, I can play it any way you'd like."
"Well, this could work, I guess," Kandai said. "Luffa and I had been talking, and maybe things aren't working out between us as well as we thought."
"Oh?" Zatte said. "I don't want to cause any trouble between you..."
"It's fine," Kandai said. "I'm not that thick-headed. If things play out that way, then so be it. Or Luffa can switch back and forth for a while until she makes up her mind. Right, Luffa?"
"I... I need to get some air," Luffa said.
"What's wrong?" Zatte asked. "Look, if this is a problem for you, I apologize. I just thought--"
Luffa ran past them and kept going until she had made it through the entrance hatch. She did not stop until she reached her personal quarters in the settlement.
It was all wrong. So very wrong. Wampaaan'riix was dead, and Dr. Topsas didn't even know him or Luffa well enough to care. Kandai barely seemed to value their marriage at all, and Zatte was willing to exploit that to get a berth on their ship.
Perhaps it would have been simpler to part ways with Kandai and make a clean break, but even that option was muddied by the results of her medical scan. She was pregnant. It was so early into the term that she hadn't noticed it before, but the scanners could tell. He was only a cluster of cells in her uterus, but her only son, Katem, was already beginning to enter this reality.
She could still cut ties with Kandai anyway. His behavior in the old history had already proven that he cared little for their son. He might have been grateful to be excused from the responsibility of fatherhood, but it still rankled her to consider it.
Then there was Zatte. Luffa felt like their relationship in this reality had gotten off to a wrong start. There was something cynical about Zatte's approach, something she couldn't put her finger on. Then it hit her: The Makyans.
In the old history, the Makyans had captured Zatte after the Tikosi massacre. Luffa never learned exactly when that was supposed to have happened, or why the Makyans had been on Dorlu Prime in the first place. Luffa had rescued Zatte from their power, and that had changed the entire dynamic of their romance. Luffa had no intention of letting Zatte fall into their evil clutches again, but that meant her relationship with Zatte would never be quite the same as what Luffa had once known.
And that only raised further questions. Was it right to keep Zatte off Dorlu Prime to protect her from a possible Makyan raid? Would the Makyans even go to Dorlu Prime without the Tikosi attack to precede it? How could Luffa warn the colonists of a threat she wasn't even sure about? And whatever she decided, what would be the effects of those choices?
Her son, Katem, had died in the old reality, betrayed by everyone who claimed to be on his side. She imagined him as a grown man, still calling himself "Xibuyas"-- the name King Rehval had given him. She imagined him dying, abandoned on some nameless battlefield, wondering why his mother had been too weak to spare him from such a fate. Now, she had a second chance to get things right for him, but was it right? Was it worth Wampaaan'riix's life? And even if it was right, how could Luffa be sure that her son wouldn't end up suffering the same fate, or worse?
She couldn't stand it any longer. Every action, every inaction, every decision she made in this new world was fraught with consequences. It filled her with a dread she couldn't describe, and in her haste to be rid of it, she flung open the cabinet in the corner, and reached out for the glowing scroll that lay inside.
Demigra threatened to kill her if she used it, but that no longer mattered. If he had the power he claimed, then she would die in battle and have done with it. And if not...
She had no idea what a victory over Demigra could even be. If he had truly destroyed all of history, then killing him would mean there would be nothing left, except for her. What then?
The thought of drifting alone in the emptiness was enough to stay her hand. Was that her fate? To be the last survivor of a doomed universe?
Her hands began to tremble. She set her teeth and balled her fists, drawing blood from her palms as she tried to force them to be steady. Then, with a defiant snarl, she reached out and took the scroll, moving as fast as she possibly could, faster than her mind could second-guess herself.
The scroll glowed more intensely as she drew it towards her chest . And just as she wondered what was supposed to happen, the world around her went white.
*******
[??????????????????]
Luffa remembered this place, or at least another one just like it. It was a featureless expanse. The ground was smooth and snow white, while the skies roiled with turbulent aurorae. The scroll was still in her left hand.
"I'm back?" she asked. "This is where I was before I ended up on Dorlu Prime. Isn't it?"
"Yes. It's good to see you, Luffa."
The sound of another voice startled Luffa so much that she nearly jumped out of her boots. She spun around, and found a familiar face, one she had never expected to see.
"Dotz?!" Luffa gasped.
She was a fortune-teller Luffa had befriended at the beginning of the war with the Jindan Cult. Much of her appearance was the same as the last time Luffa had seen her. Dotz was tall, dressed in a long purple gown with hood around her face. A mauve shawl was draped across her shoulders, and her thin bony hands were clasped together in a hopeful gesture. The only differences lay in some of the arcane ornaments she wore, and her age. The Dotz Luffa had known was middle-aged. Now, she looked to be much older. Her once-subtle wrinkles now cut deeper lines in her face, and the greying hair under her hood now shone stark white.
"Oh, goodness. You look just like I remembered," Dotz said with a smile.
Luffa stepped toward her and placed her free hand on Dotz's shoulder. "Where are we, Dotz? Did you bring us here? What happened to you?"
She took a deep breath before answering. "It's funny," she said. "I've been wanting to find you for so long, and now that you're here I can't think of what to say. I, uh, well... I didn't bring us here. Let me start with that. This is just where you happened to be when I finally found you."
"You've been looking for me?" Luffa asked.
Dotz nodded solemnly. "Yes," she said. "Ever since you vanished that day on Planet Nagaoka. Everyone believed you had died. I mean... well, the planet exploded and everyone knew you were there when it happened. It made sense that you had perished there. It made sense to everyone, but not to me."
"I survived," Luffa said. "A magic dragon rescued me and took me into the distant future."
"Yes, yes," Dotz said. "I knew it had to be something like that. Shenron."
"You know about Shenron?" Luffa asked. "Then you know the rest? The Dragon Balls? The Time Patrol?"
"No," Dotz said, "but I've seen bits and pieces in my visions. What I meant was that it had to have something to do with you being sent forward in time. That was why I could never get a proper reading whenever I tried to tell your fortune. My psychic abilities improved after we first met, do you remember?"
Luffa nodded. "We couldn't have fought the war without you, Dotz," she said. "Well, we might have, but it would have been a lot bloodier without your ability to predict which planets the Jindan Cultists would attack. And you worked so hard to improve your abilities even further. I... never really got the chance to tell you how much I respected you for that."
She became overcome with emotion, and before she knew it, she dropped the scroll and embraced Dotz with both arms.
"Oh, well, I wasn't expecting this..." Dotz said.
"I've missed you," Luffa said. "You and all the others... I..."
"There now... it's okay," Dotz said as she patted Luffa on the back. "I... forgot how young you were when you disappeared. To tell the truth, I've been trying to find you for so long, it started to feel like an abstraction. Now that you're here, I... well. It's very good to see you."
"How did you find me?" Luffa asked. "I don't even know where this place is."
"After the war, I continued to develop my abilities," Dotz explained. "It always bothered me that I couldn't tell your fortune, even a little. That's why I didn't believe you died on Nagaoka. That should have been easy to foresee, but I had no idea until it happened. Well, over time, I got better at telling fortunes. I learned some new tricks, and improved on some old ones. I found out you were still alive in the far future, but there was still something obstructing my vision. It took me a while to get it right, but I finally managed to get past that obstacle. And uh... here I am."
"You transported yourself through time?" Luffa asked. "You never had that kind of ability before?"
"Well, no, and I don't have it now," Dotz said. "I'm not really here, Luffa. I can talk to you and touch you, but I think that's just because this vision I'm having is so focused, so clear. There's nothing else here in this time and place. So there's nothing to distract me from what I came to find, which is you."
"Then... then there's nothing you can do," Luffa said.
Slowly, she released Dotz from the embrace and stepped back. "When I saw you, I thought you might have had something to do with the scroll, or this place. Or maybe you could take me back with you."
Dotz shook her head. "I'm sorry. I'm not really clear on what's going on. I saw visions of a man, screaming something about making a 'new history.' Is that why there's nothing here? But how did you survive?"
"It's a long story," Luffa said. "A goddess of time needed my help to stop an evil wizard, and I failed. He destroyed... everything." She waved at the emptiness around them, as if Dotz had not already seen it for herself. "He said he made a timeline just for me to live in if I left him alone... but... it's no good, Dotz. I'd just make a mess of that world too."
Luffa pointed at the scroll she had dropped. "He told me that if I changed my mind, I could use that scroll to take me to him for a final battle. But instead it just took me to this place. I don't know why. I don't understand any of it."
"What about the other one?" Dotz asked. "I sensed another presence in this time."
"Who?" Luffa asked. "As far as I know, it's just Demigra and myself at the end of existence. Who else could there be? Wait... you don't mean..."
"That's right. She's referring to me."
The new voice was not one Luffa had heard before. She and Dotz looked around, but found no sign of the speaker.
"Who's there?" Luffa asked, unsure whether she actually wanted answer. She nearly suggested that Dotz should stay close to her, but thought better of it. Even if Dotz were truly here, what could Luffa possibly do to protect her?
At last, she noticed the scroll beginning to glow a brighter shade of purple, and it unfurled all on its own. Luffa watched as something began to emerge from the parchment, like an animal rising up from a murky swamp. The form was indistinct, more like a glowing fog than a person. Then, as it cleared the parchment, it took shape, and Luffa could recognize the vague outline.
"It can't be," Luffa said. "I mean, you're the only one left, but how can you be here?"
Despite Luffa's confusion, there was no mistaking the Divine Tokitoki Bird. He floated there with outstretched wings, and stared intently at Luffa.
"Well then, Luffa," the voice said. "Are you finally ready to fight?"

Broly
Age: 48 Affiliation: Freeza Force (Defunct) Date of Birth: April 16 Place of Birth: Birthing Facility 4, Vegetopolis, Planet Vegeta Species: Saiyans (Sub-species: Mutant; Type: Legendary Super Saiyan)
Universe Inspiration: Dragon Ball Super: Broly film inspired, with references to original Dragon Ball Z: Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan
Appearance Broly is a tall Saiyan, in his base form being somewhere in the mid 6 foot range height-wise, with a very muscular build, and deeply tanned skin, that’s covered in scars from his harsh upbringing. As is typical for his species, Broly has wild, black, hair that doesn’t change in shape, but simply continues to grow and maintain its shape until a certain point. At one point Broly had a tail, also as was standard of a saiyan, but was removed by his father as a precaution to avoid the use of his Oozaru form which, even as a baby, was over twice as strong as Paragus.
Generally Broly wears the same clothing that he was given as a baby, when sent to planet Vampa, though in later years he would usually eschew the armor, as even its presence made Broly feel that his movement was impeded somewhat, when he was recruited into the Freeza Force. The only occasion in which he was known to wear his Freeza Force armor was when it was expected, during his fight with Vegeta and Goku. Consistently, though, Broly is known to wear a green pelt around his waist that was made from the skinned ear of an animal who had once been his friend that he called Ba.
As he enters an enraged state Broly is known to grow both taller and larger, increasing in size by roughly a foot, and growing even larger. When in such an emotional condition his pupils also shift from their dark irises to having yellow ones, a change which makes some hypothesize that it has more to do with a partial Oozaru transformation than something inherent to some type of technique.
When in the Super Saiyan base state, Broly experiences the typical changes physically, his muscles becoming more defined, and sometimes even slightly larger, with his eyes changing color to blue, and spiky gold hair that takes on a more stiff appearance. However, this is superseded when activating his Type-C transformation, retaining the yellow pupils from his enraged condition, having larger muscles and growing even further larger than his enraged state, while his hair takes on a more greenish color.
Upon transcending to his Legendary Super Saiyan state, Broly’s hair becomes more notably green, and he grows even further in size, standing over 9 feet tall. As well, he becomes his most fury-driven at this time, with his pupils no longer being visible, and being short of a frothing animal.
Personality Broly is one of the rare saiyan speciment who display a uniquely gentle nature in regard to other living creatures. Primarily, even when hunting, he would generally only attack animals that were known to be aggressive towards his father and he. This is generally consistent in his interactions with others, as he generally will not immediately jump to violence, and in fact only does this when incited to do so. One might say that he has even taken to a passive nature thanks to his largely isolationist upbringing, as Paragus had held no illusions regarding their eventual return to society, and it speaks to a possible conclusion that saiyans may well be very peaceful by nature, when left to their own devices, and lack interaction with many other creatures.
Despite this, Broly is still victim to certain qualities that are consistent among saiyans, such as a voracious appetite for food, which is expressed through eating massive helpings of food, and often mowing through small snacks when offered to him. This results in Broly being readily inquisitive towards things that appear food-like, or even anything vaguely edible as the animals he’s accustomed to eating are a stretch to be referred to as “food”. Additionally, Broly, when losing himself in the throes of a violent episode, will begin to crave and enjoy the violence of battle, eventually becoming psychotic enough to attack individuals who he may not have actually been fighting, such as when he attacked Freeza for roughly an hour, after being redirected towards him by Goku and Vegeta, and then after attacking Whis when he determined that his target no longer had any fight left to give. Notably, this seems to mean that Broly, even enraged, is lucid enough to stop attacking someone who doesn’t have anything left, boring him and causing the saiyan to move on.
As he grew up in an extremely isolated world, with only one other sapient being to have a relationship with, Broly is extremely shy and naive. In fact, he will generally only speak to those he knows well, such as his father, and later Cheelai and Lemo. Through this, Broly has poor manners, and little use for common social graces, which makes him appear more savage and boorish to others than he actually is.
Thanks to the fact that he only grew up with his father, who had something resembling affection for his son, Broly has become conditioned to believe that Paragus is the most important person in his life. This gives him a loyalty to his father that, while being objectively aware that his father brought him up in a vicious manner, forcing the boy to fight dangerous wild animals to enhance his Battle Power, he would still anger quickly when others spoke poorly of the saiyan. In actuality, Broly’s relationship with Paragus is largely more similar to that of a master and a weapon, as Paragus largely did things that would either enable him to emotionally manipulate Broly, bully him into submission, or actively physically control him. This leaves Broly with a fearful, even traumatic, response to certain stimuli, such as electricity and electrical currents, as well as devices which resemble a remote control, and any sort of neck jewelry, or even most types of apparel that would require it be wrapped around his neck.
Despite these facts, Broly invests significant stock into those interpersonal relationships that he does have, especially the one he held with Paragus, to at least a similar regard that Goku held his friendship with Krillin. This is evidenced by the fact that through grief and fury, at seeing the corpse of his father freshly killed, supposedly by combat shrapnel, an already enraged Broly was able to be pushed to the breaking point that would allow him to achieve the Super Saiyan transformation.
Biography Summarized in the Dragon Ball Super: Broly film
Skills, Abilities, and Powers -Superhuman Physical State: Saiyans originated and evolved on a planet with ten times the mass of planet Earth, and accordingly have a greater physical condition when under the same gravitational conditions. Additionally, saiyans are a species who inherently are more powerful than humans with little training at all levels of development. Saiyan infants who are considered unimpressive (Battle Power Ratings/BPR of less than 100 generally) are generally sent to planets like Earth with the expectation of wiping out sapient species from its surface within two decades. For context, an adult human’s BPR on average would be somewhere between a 5 to a 10. Upon birth and analysis Broly was able to measure in the ballpark of 10,000 BPR (Equivalent roughly to Bardock in the TV special, and stronger than Goku’s powered up state when fighting Nappa and Vegeta) at the higher end, when his emotions were elevated, and resting at 920 when calm, both being considered extremely impressive ratings for a newborn. Accordingly, Broly’s inflated Battle Power indicated his ability to kill monsters that made the likes of Peregus (his own father and a lower-class warrior specimen) flee and seek refuge from. Growing into adulthood, Broly would become extremely physically powerful, despite only having training in the form of some very fundamental fighting from his father as a small child, and otherwise relying on the dangerous creatures of planet Vampa. This, combined with the rare genetic mutation that renders Broly a Legendary Super Saiyan, he has become easily one of the most powerful individuals in the multiverse in terms of simple physical might. By comparison, he was said to be stronger than Beerus, a destruction god who is able to effortlessly destroy planets through a single touch, and accidentally destroy the universe that he occupies when fighting. Much like other characters in Dragon Ball, the specifics of Broly’s physical feats, or the feats of others when applied to scale with him, as the story is an Eastern Epic with Sci-Fi elements blended in. It is to be accepted, though, that Broly is among the most powerful beings in existence, and that most feats of physicality should be considered manageable by him, excepting his noted weaknesses and limitations. Most factors that can limit his ability to perform are usually magical in nature, or otherwise come from a higher plateau of power. If one considers a spread of prowess between the three main fight stats (Power, Speed, and Durability) with 15 points to budget, Broly factors as-follows: Power: 6 Speed: 4 Durability: 5 But relative to other DB characters, being stronger than Beerus would likely earn him more points, making an array like this more reasonable: Power: 8 Speed: 6 Durability: 7 This is based on the fact that it required a fusion to ultimately defeat Broly, with the fusion in question being greater than the sum of his parts (Vegeta and Goku both in SSB). --Zenkai (Also known as Saiyan Power): Like other Saiyans, Broly is able to become stronger, receiving a boost to his Battle Power and physical state after recovering from a defeat, or enduring hardship in the heat of battle. Many of the currently living saiyans have used this ability to great effect to become some of the most powerful mortals in existence. ---Combat Zenkai: Uniquely to Broly, likely due to his being a Legendary Super Saiyan, he is able to experience the growth that one would expect of a saiyan DURING battle, rather than while recovering, essentially allowing him to grow more powerful as he’s pressured in battle, making him an exceptionally dangerous opponent.
-Superhuman Senses: like all saiyans, Broly’s olfactory is more acute than a normal human’s. Additionally, he’s able to react and perceive things in a much faster time too, keeping up with his speed, and those of a similar degree of ability in this regard. Broly, however, cannot seem able to react to those faster than him by a degree that matters (such as Gogeta during SSB), but still seems to be able to track, as he attempted to respond to attacks from this opponent WHILE being struck.
-Fighting Ability: Broly has had very minimal training in regards to combat, as he was easily able to surpass his father as a child, and thus only has the most fundamental technique from that brief time in which he COULD train with Broly and have it matter at all. Instead, Broly largely experienced training through fighting and killing the dangerous monsters who inhabited Vampa. However, when it came to fighting other warriors, it became evident when Broly fought others of a similar raw power to himself (Vegeta and Goku) that he had no practical skills in martial arts. Notable, though, is that this lack of experience allowed him to develop and learn how to fight other humanoids extremely quickly, understanding what worked and what didn’t, modifying his style accordingly. In terms of style, Broly is defined by a distinct lack of style, being a true brawler, he moves and attacks in a method that makes sense for the purposes of someone with little combat experience. Broly’s attacks are direct and fast, with little flourish or fluidity, simply compensating for his lack of finesse with raw speed and power. Haymakers, lariats, and hard straights tend to represent most of his attacks.
-Combat Genius: Much like Son Goku and Vegeta, Broly is considered a genius when it comes to combat. Though whereas the likes of Goku is able to improvise battle strategies and tactics tailored to the situation, Broly is able to fight purely on instinct, guiding without thought on a surface level. Though, it is worth noting that he does actively learn and adapt in combat, which is still a degree of thought too far to be necessary to attain Ultra Instinct.
-Adaptive Combatant: Broly is able to deal with opponents who are superior to him in some regard or another, so long as he isn’t outclassed by them entirely. This was clearly the case when after a few moments of fighting with Vegeta, he became reliably able to outfight his opponent, despite remaining in base form as opposed to the other’s transformed state, only to then have trouble with Goku’s fighting style, due to not yet having adapted. This is notably the case, as similar tactics seem to fail to work against Broly repeatedly.
-Technique Mimicry: Like other saiyans, but notably like his mentor and rival Goku, Broly is possessed of the coveted ability to mimic the techniques of those he sees, particularly Chi-based ones, such as when he was able to turn Goku’s own God Bind back upon its user. Broly, while able to copy the techniques of those that he sees, generally tends to only use those that he finds useful, particularly those that don’t require him to stand still and charge.
-Chi Manipulation and Generation: Like all other saiyans, Broly has the ability to manipulate his own life aura, known commonly in Earth philosophic and martial arts systems as Chi, Qi, or Ki, and manifest it into physical phenomena. Broly is able to most notably use this energy to propel himself through the air in flight, or focusing it into a raw blast of plasma, which he can fire from his hands or mouth. While other characters have expressed a range of abilities when using their chi, Broly has had very minimal training with this life energy, due to his father’s rather unimpressive abilities, to be assumed, and not fighting enemies who frequently make use of these abilities. While Broly doesn’t initially have techniques that he uses with his chi in a specific sense, or the ability to detect the life-force of others, he is extremely powerful, with a BPR that can’t be measured by the most advanced Scouter technology. An individual’s chi is impacted by a number of factors, including their physical state, spiritual state, focus, discipline, and emotions. Notably, Broly as an infant was able to become more than ten times more powerful when having typical baby-type anger.
-Oozaru’s Wrath: Due to his uninhibited rage, Broly is able to access his power increase from being an Oozaru (Saiyans generally accepted this to be a x10 multiplier to his BPR, as well as increase his physical size somewhat and strength as if he had transformed into a great ape, but without the loss of agility that comes with being an actual giant ape.
-Heat Resistance: Broly is able to resist heat to the point that he and Goku were able to do combat in a pit of lava, and not seem to be injured by the molten rock around them. This is likely a saiyan adaptation, as Broly wasn’t frequently making use of his chi in a subtle fashion yet.
Chi-Based Abilities and Techniques -Flight -Ki Blasts -Eraser Cannon (A focused orb of chi that Broly has enhanced the explosive power of, creating a more powerful and debilitating attack. This is the closest thing to Broly’s signature technique, though it’s not very distinct from his baseline blasts. Notably Broly can also fire this attack from his chest.) -Omega Blaster (Through creating a larger orb with his Eraser Cannon, Broly is able to power up the destructive power and size of his chi orbs by funneling energy into it after launch.) -Blaster Meteor (After forming an Energy Shield around himself, Broly fires a grouping of homing energy blasts from either side of himself, forming a powerful and destructive blast.) -Gigantic Breath (Essentially Eraser Cannon firing from his mouth, but in more of a stream-like form.) -Saiyan Blaster (Explosion Wave using his Wrath State) --Omega Blaster (A Super Explosive Wave effected by Broly’s Super Saiyan C-Type Form.) -Gigantic Full Blast -Planet Crusher (After forming a large ball of energy above his head, Broly will then throw a bomb of his chi at the opponent, inflicting massive damage. This is Broly’s individually strongest chi blast.) -Gigantic Full Blast (Essentially a wave of energy fired from in front of Broly.) --Gigantic Omegastorm (A charged green ball of chi forms in front of Broly, before being released as a green wave of energy.) --Gigantic Cluster (Broly’s Full Blast, but rather than firing it in a single wave it takes the form of many bullets that follow an opponent’s movements.) --Gigantic Catastrophe (Broly will fire an energy blast from his mouth, but also several, compact, bullets from his hand, before he physically charges, and fires another wave at the foe.) -Powered Shell (Essentially a tangible shield formed from Broly’s dense chi, he is able to use it to protect himself from attacks, though this technique is notable for being not only visible, but can actually impede a target from reaching him by several inches.) -Super Saiyan (As a Saiyan with sufficient Z-Cells, Broly is able to achieve the Super Saiyan state, though he initially requires a state of heightened emotion to spark the transformation. While a Super Saiyan, Broly’s BPR is multiplied by 50x, though generally it’s accepted to be a significant increase in Broly’s already huge power level. Due to the nature of the transformation, Broly’s life energy becomes extremely volatile, much like his emotional state, essentially being able to close the difference between Broly’s base form, and Goku’s Super Saiyan God form.) --Super Saiyan C-Type (Due to Broly’s mutation as a Legendary Super Saiyan he is able to use a far more efficient mode of Super Saiyan, taking it along a distinct path of evolution as opposed to non-Legendary Super Saiyans. While other types of Super Saiyans tend to progress along a series of grades that modulate to an eventual efficiency that becomes Super Saiyan 2 (Or Super Saiyan Grade V), and then from then on becomes inefficient again thought Grade VI (Super Saiyan 3) before eventually reaching a state of perfect efficiency and power with Super Saiyan 4 (Grade VII), C-Type has a similar type of efficiency built into it already, not taxing Broly’s body, mind, or chi, while utilizing this newfound efficiency to push his abilities as a Super Saiyan even further. This version of Super Saiyan is also notable for having green or yellow hair, rather than the typical gold, and that while in it Broly’s mental state still remains volatile, craving combat. At present, Broly has only shown the ability to use this version of Super Saiyan while also using his Oozaru’s Wrath. ---Super Saiyan Berserker Mode (Legendary Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan B-Mode)(Essentially the full-power version of Super Saiyan C-Type, Broly pushes his power to its maximum level, becoming even larger and more powerful, though still without losing his speed and agility. At this point he’s become roughly 9 feet tall, and begun fighting entirely on instinct. As described by others, this form of Super Saiyan can only grow in power, without evident weakening so long as the user’s body can withstand the strain of the power it’s holding, though eventually it can begin to destroy itself in the process, severely inhibiting their speed and strength in the process, until the force of their chi eventually becomes so great that it causes the Berserking Saiyan to explode. In this form, Broly’s chi can become so intense that upon transformation it can be felt from a different quadrant of the galaxy altogether by those who are sensitive to chi. If his chi continues to grow without regard for his body’s limitations it is assumable that even those who aren’t sensitive to life energy might become able to detect his power throughout the entire universe. Berserker Mode is notably referred to as such because of the personality change it causes in users who don’t have perfect chi control, much like Super Saiyan Blue, in which Broly often becomes drastically more violent. In the case of him using this form most often he lacks the capacity to NOT kill and destroy everyone around him.
Martial Abilities and Techniques -Haymaker (Many of Broly’s punches are simply wide, strong, swings that make use of his considerable size and strength. While these attacks are comparatively slow, they are noteworthy for being extremely dangerous to be struck with, necessitating caution when approaching Broly in combat.) -Lariat (Essentially charging attacks in which Broly armbars his foe, or grips them, often slamming them into hard surfaces, or blowing through them with the intent to break bones.) -Wrathful Charge (Broly will charge in to strike his opponent with an Eraser Cannon at Point-Blank Range, usually in the target’s chest.) -Eraser Blow (Essentially Wrathful Charge, though often aimed more center-mass of his target, with the explosion set to knock foes flying.)

Star Twinkle Precure Episode 11
Boy, oh boy.
I know I said I wanted to do a review of the first 10 episodes but fuck that, I have things to say. XD
Just so it’s on the clear quick thoughts on StarPre so far: Very strong season, lovely characters, amazing transformations, overall great. There’s nothing that I hate, but some things worries me, still nothing that gets in the way of me liking this season. OKAY NOW TO THE EPISODE ITSELF.
We pick up from last week (which was INCREDIBLE btw), the gloom of the loss is still very present and we also have the tension because of Madoka’s father lurking around and everything looked good so far.
We had a nice scene with Prunce busting their disguise in front of Ryo, we got a great (and much needed) scene with Hikaru and Ryo that serves as a start point for her to stand up again, and we got a real nice fight where we got to learn more about the villains and we even got a glimpse of the final boss waking up.
But nothing is perfect and this episode showed some flaws, that I didn’t notice at first and I only saw them when I rewatched the episode with subs this morning.
First, Ryo accepts way too easy and way too well the fact that Lala, Prunce and Fuwa are aliens. And you can say “Yeah, he’s an old man, he wouldn’t give much of a reaction anyway” BUT STILL, aliens aren’t something we see everyday, you can’t just shrug it off like if it was nothing. If Ryo has a connection to space or the precures, which I believe he has, then his reaction here would make sense, BUT WE HAVE NO INFORMATION ABOUT IT YET! SO IT’S JUST WEIRD!
Second, we have a real nice speech from the villains where they throw in Hikaru’s face that she knows nothing about space, and the way she idealize and imagine things is far too off of how things really are. And honestly that whole monologue is GREAT, it is very real and they can create layers and layers of discussions about it that could expand both the villains and Hikaru to make more interesting and complex characters. But they just throw that away and start a discourse about imagination THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FIGHT.
Yeah, the “power of friendship moment” was cute, but the fact that was something about Hikaru’s imagination that made her snap and go super saiyan IS JUST UNREASONABLE BECAUSE HIKARU’S IMAGINATION HAS DONE NOTHING FOR THE GIRLS SO FAR. “Hikaru’s imagination brought Fuwa here” yeah but that’s all it has done in 11 episodes. Everything else wasn’t done by Hikaru’s imagination but by herself, her personality, who she is as a person. As far as imagination goes all we’ve seen was she drawing constellations on the first episode and when she redesigned the exterior of Lala’s spaceship. This moment should be about Hikaru as an individual, not her imagination.
Then there’s the biggest problem of this episode to me: The new attack.
Yes, the Southern Cross symbolism has been seen since I think episode 6, so it’s not a problem, it makes sense and it fits the group nicely. The attack itself is beautiful and yet a little simple, and since all the attacks this season have been like that no issues there. But then there’s the Twinkle Sticks that come out of nowhere and is just “...”.
We had no mention of these sticks before, till now the only precure weapon we had knowledge of were the pens. None of the aliens mentioned, none of the princesses talked about it, we’ve never seen them on a book and Hikaru never drew them anywhere. So to them to summon magical sticks from nothing is terrible.
If the sticks had appeared when all the girls were surrounded by the super saiyan aura after the notrigger attacked and then Prunce says something like “oh the legendary twinkle sticks, attack now” and they proceed to attack everything would be fine, but when we have no mention of a magical weapon before and the cures suddenly summon them it makes no sense!!!!!
And even if you stretch it and say “Oh Hikaru imagined them and blah blah blah” still makes no sense because HOW WOULD HIKARU HAD SHARE HER IMAGINATION WITH THE OTHER GIRLS SO THEY ALL WOULD DO THE SAME THING????
Theses things don’t add up and make an episode that had everything to be great, like the last one, be less impressive and kinda disappointing.
Is sad that my first time writing about Star Twinkle on this blog is with such a rampage of rage, because I love this season, I really do, but is because I love it so much that those things make me so mad because I want this season to be perfect and for it to be as good as how Hugtto was.
The next few episodes seem to be fillers so I hope I won’t be as mad in the next few weeks. XD

More Legendverse stuff but more Anime:
The Jones Twins and Eva being able to have complete synergy in their powers to create an aura projection of the Original Dragon, or at least a vague depiction of it. This takes A LOT out of them, successfully or not.
Given the existence of Shadow Lugia, would it be possible for Aiko to go Shadow as well? What kind of consequences would happen afterwards?( Cause you know Kenji and co are going to power of friendship through her....also silver being chosen by Celebi, so yeah, he's a big help in that)
Wayne can probably create water swords( his Chosen is Keldeo)
Shauna could possibly have the ability to either create clones of herself ( related to the whole cell thing) OR is the one with the plant/ ecosystem powers. I realize now that like Kyurem, Zygarde is the middle ground of the aura trio. The ecosystem is a area where life and death happens, and I can imagine when there's an extreme of either, is when Zygarde steps in.
Red being Chosen by mew means A LOT, since you know, he's chosen to what I'd believed to be the ancestor of all pokemon. Maybe his ability is more passive? Maybe it's him actually being able to communicate with pokemon, like N but not naturally ( though even without it, he's VERY good at understanding pokemon). This is just a concept though, as I need to look at Mew's lore again.
I have no clue what Green/Leaf's Chosen would be, if any at all. Melmetal?
Honestly, going back to the first point with the twins and Eva, maybe all the Chosen could potentially have an aura projection of their Legendary when they are gifted more power. Think super Saiyan or magical girl or something.
And that's all for now. Hope you like these ideas :)

With a little luck (and one of the following methods), Vegeta could catch up to Goku's Ultra Instinct form in Dragon Ball. When Vegeta first arrived on Earth, big bald sidekick in tow, he expected to find the planet's legendary wish-making Dragon Balls. Instead, the Saiyan prince gained something far more valuable - the glowing warmth of true friendship. Since his defeat at the hands of Goku and the Z-Warriors, Vegeta has gradually mellowed - starting a family with Bulma, saving the Earth from alien threats, and even taking his kids to the theme park on rare days off from training. But throughout Vegeta's evolution, he hasn't ever lost sight of his overarching goal to surpass Goku.
Vegeta has managed to overtake his rival at several points in the Dragon Ball story, but his advantage never seems to last, with Goku's protagonist status keeping him one step ahead. The gulf in power looks bigger than ever now that Goku has added Ultra Instinct to his arsenal. A technique usually reserved for Gods, Goku taps into Ultra Instinct while fighting Jiren during the Tournament of Power. Both Ultra Instinct Sign and the full-fat, silver-haired Ultra Instinct afford Goku a massive power-up, elevating his strength exponentially and allowing him to dodge attacks on instinct alone.
Related: Dragon Ball: How Goku Can Use Super Saiyan 3 Better In The Future
Vegeta has been left firmly in the dust, especially after Goku trained with Merus and learned to pull out Ultra Instinct at will. But while the antihero grinds his teeth at the thought of lagging so far behind, Dragon Ball has hinted at several possible ways he can catch up.
Despite the considerable mountain Vegeta has to climb, he does hold one significant advantage over Goku - an evolved form of Super Saiyan Blue. Heading into the Tournament of Power, both Goku and Vegeta were using Super Saiyan Blue as their go-to transformation, but while the thrill of combat elevated Goku into the Ultra Instinct realm, Vegeta made improvements of his own, breaking through to a more powerful version of the blue-haired form. Vegeta's Super Saiyan Blue Evolved transformation is roughly equivalent to Goku in Ultra Instinct Sign, and allows Vegeta to compete with God-level opponents such as Toppo.
Vegeta's latest Super Saiyan breakthrough isn't a patch on Goku's mastered Ultra Instinct, but the permanently-peeved prince could build upon his Super Saiyan head-start and kick through to new SSJ levels while Goku is busy with Ultra Instinct. If Super Saiyan Blue Evolved is as strong as Ultra Instinct Sign, Vegeta might find that his next transformation comes close to matching true Ultra Instinct. And since Vegeta would be relying solely on his Saiyan heritage instead of copying the techniques of the Gods, this method would also suit his raging ego.
Another area where Vegeta has excelled over Goku is in advanced spirit control. Vegeta didn't remain idle while his rival was off mastering Ultra Instinct. In preparation for a showdown with Moro, Vegeta traveled to Yardrat - the planet where Goku famously learned his trademark Instant Transmission. Befriending the locals, Vegeta not only learned their teleportation technique (begrudgingly), he also trained in Forced Spirit Fission, allowing him to cleave foreign ki from his enemies. This trick would prove particularly useful against opponents who fuse or steal energy.
Related: Every God of Destruction in Dragon Ball Super
But Forced Spirit Fission only scratches the surface of what Vegeta could achieve should he explore the unconventional teachings of Yardrat further. The planet's elder is capable of growing his body at will, and can create doppelganger clones. If Vegeta returned to Yardrat, continued his training and mastered those techniques, he'd receive a formidable power upgrade. Even using Ultra Instinct, Goku might struggle against a giant Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta spawning copies of himself in the midst of battle. Between Dragon Ball's two main Saiyans, Vegeta has always been the more cerebral fighter, so overtaking Goku using superior ki control fits his character perfectly.
Currently in Dragon Ball Super, Goku is continuing to train with Whis, honing Ultra Instinct ahead of a seemingly inevitable clash against Granolah. As Vegeta looks on, green with envy, he reiterates his determination to overtake Kakarot, and Beerus hears this. Apparently sick of Goku disturbing his naps with sparring sessions, Beerus stirs the proverbial pot by hinting at an alternative to Ultra Instinct. According to Universe 7's God of Destruction, Beerus' ilk have little interest in reaching the state of tranquility required for Goku's new form. Instead, the Gods of Destruction have their own way of hitting immense power levels without letting go of their anger and emotion. Naturally, Vegeta is thrilled by this prospect.
Dragon Ball Super appears to be priming Vegeta to master the antithesis of Ultra Instinct - a transformation that harnesses rage and passion instead of calling for a completely clear mind. And since this mystery form is another power of the Gods, it could allow Vegeta to surpass Goku in the not-too-distant future. Learning a technique that requires anger instead of peace suits Vegeta's personality, and maintains his duality with Goku. Where the Dragon Ball protagonist can draw power from calmness, Vegeta can fuel his strength with the pent-up frustration that comes from 30 years in Goku's shadow.
Regardless of whether Vegeta can learn a new transformation from Beerus, anger could be his ticket to overtaking Goku in Dragon Ball. When Beerus first arrived in Battle of Gods, none of the Z-Warriors were a match for Universe 7's God of Destruction, and even Vegeta quaked in fear at the uninvited guest. When Beerus gave Bulma a slap, however, Vegeta launched into action and fought competitively against the gluttonous God, despite being a mere Super Saiyan 2. Considering how easily Super Saiyan 3 Goku was swatted by Beerus, Vegeta's brief flurry is an amazing feat, and speaks to the importance of pure anger over who has more hair changes in their locker.
Related: How Old Goku Is In Each Dragon Ball Saga
Vegeta received a similarly impressive boost after watching Cell defeat Trunks in the original Dragon Ball series. These incidents suggest that even if Vegeta remains at his current level, he could match the power of Ultra Instinct if provoked in the right way. Perhaps Dragon Ball's next villain captures Bulma, or insults Bulla, or brutally batters Trunks. Sheer unadulterated rage could send Vegeta into a frenzy that not even Goku's Ultra Instinct can keep up with.
It'll never happen, but Vegeta could finally overtake Goku if he just tones down his ego. Despite seeing Goku's newfound power, Vegeta is staunchly refusing to learn Ultra Instinct, even though he's perfectly capable of doing so. As far as the Saiyan prince is concerned, the technique doesn't suit his style, and he wouldn't be caught dead using the same moves as Kakarot. If Vegeta simply swallowed his pride and mastered Ultra Instinct, however, he'd immediately narrow the gap between himself and Goku. Vegeta's spirit control and Evolved Super Saiyan Blue form might even give him an edge in a battle between Ultra Instinct Saiyans.
If Vegeta wasn't so determined to avoid copying his rival, he could also take full advantage of Instant Transmission. Vegeta has already teleported successfully in Dragon Ball, but he refuses to hone the technique properly because of its long-standing association with Goku. Such iron-clad stubbornness is unfortunate because combined with his other Yardrat techniques and superior intellect, Vegeta could use Instant Transmission even more effectively and inventively than Goku.

The 20 most anticipated games of 2018
‘Spider-Man’ is one of the biggest releases hitting consoles this year.
How do you possibly top a video game year as flat-out awesome as 2017? You probably don’t — the past year was an all-timer, right up there with 2007 and 1998.
But no one loves a challenge like a game maker, and the men and women who toil to build amazing gaming experiences have their eyes set on 2018. While we’re sure to get countless surprises between now and next December, the year to come is already shaping up to be another one for the record books. A new “Red Dead,” the return of Kratos, another “Last of Us,” that crazy looking “Far Cry” — a ton of heavy-hitters are slated for release in 2018. Here are 20 worth watching (and playing, eventually).
Note: Only games with currently confirmed 2018 release dates are included. All release dates subject to change/delay.
“Red Dead Redemption 2” (Spring 2018 | PS4, Xbox One)
‘Red Dead Redemption II’ is easily the most hotly anticipated game of 2018.
Few companies can raise their stock price 6% simply by tweeting little more than their logo against a red background. But Rockstar Games, which is owned by Take-Two Interactive (TTWO), isn’t just any company. Best known as the mad geniuses behind “Grand Theft Auto,” Rockstar also happened to make the best Old West video game of all time in 2010’s legendary “Red Dead Redemption.” First hinted at by a simple tweet back in October of 2016, the prequel follows nefarious new protagonist Arthur Morgan and his gang of outlaws as they rob, cheat and steal their way across the American Frontier.
“The Last of Us: Part II” (TBD 2018 | PS4)
‘The Last of Us II’ has a lot to live up to, but there’s high hopes for Naughty Dog.
Emotions ran high in the post-apocalyptic hellscape of the PS3 giant, “The Last Us.” So did the game’s score, coming in at a staggering 95 on Metacritic. The sequel, naturally, has a lot to live up to, but with ace developer Naughty Dog on the job, we’re expecting another masterpiece. Taking place a few years after the original, it lets players guide a 19-year-old Ellie through a world somehow more violent and dangerous than before. We simply can’t wait.
“Anthem” (Q4 2018 | PS4, Xbox One, PC)
We’re not entirely sure what to expect from ‘Anthem’ yet, but based on developer Bioware’s pedigree, we’ve got high hopes.
Look out, “Destiny” – EA (EA)and Bioware are prepping an online shooter of their own. We think. It’s actually hard to say for sure at this point. Outside of an outstanding trailer shown at EA’s pre-E3 press conference in June, precious little is known about Bioware’s take on online multiplayer action. Players don customizable exosuits to fly, shoot, and chat through gorgeous sci-fi worlds. So yeah, sounds like “Destiny.”
“God of War” (Q1 2018 | PS4)
God of War transports Kratos from ancient Greece to the frozen wastes of Norse mythology.
Deity-defying madman Kratos returns to action in 2018, but he’s changed quite a bit over the years. Now a dad, the god killer is tasked with teaching his son how to survive a harsh new land while keeping his epic anger in check. With a new camera, deeper RPG elements, and a brand-new signature weapon (goodbye chains, hello axe), “God of War” will offer a fresh perspective on an old anti-hero.
“Far Cry 5” (March 27 | PS4, Xbox One, PC)
‘Far Cry 5’ looks to reinvent the franchise, forcing you to confront religious zealots on U.S. soil.
Ubisoft (UBI.PA) takes its chaotic open-world shooter to a fictional town in Montana run by a brutal doomsday cult. Your job? What else — unite the town’s residents, deal with the crazy cult leaders, and try not to get eaten by a bear. Touching on hot-button ideological issues like religious fanaticism and domestic terrorism, it’s a controversial move that should help “Far Cry 5” inject new life into the popular series.
“Kingdom Hearts III” (TBD 2018 | PS4, Xbox One)
After years of anticipation ‘Kingdom Hearts III’ will land on consoles in 2018. As long as it’s not delayed … again.
Fans have been wishing upon this particular star for roughly a decade now, but they’ll finally get their heart’s desire in 2018. This long-awaited RPG returns players to the bizarre, mashed-up universe of Square and Disney, dropping them into the boots of series star Sora as he attempts to stop a second Keyblade War. With appearances by countless Disney (DIS) characters and a new “Attraction Flow” move that lets players summon attacks based on Disney rides, it’s sure to thrill die-hards. Let’s just hope it doesn’t get delayed again.
“Monster Hunter World” (January 26 | PS4, Xbox One)
‘Monster Hunter World’ is the most ambitious entry in the series yet.
Capcom’s hugely popular beast-tracking action game embraces the open-world craze, and the result is shaping up to be one of the biggest early releases of 2018. You’ll still spend hours chasing down massive creatures, but with no load screens to break up the fun. It’s also fully online and boasts far and away the most impressive “Monster Hunter” graphics yet. If you’ve never given it a chance, this might be the time to start.
“Sea of Thieves” (March 20 | Xbox One, PC)
‘Sea of Thieves’ drew plenty of attention when it debuted at E3 2017. We’ll find out if it’s worth the hype in 2018.
If you wish every day was Talk like a Pirate Day, batten down the hatches and sweep up the poop deck: Microsoft’s (MSFT) got some sweet, sweet booty headed your way. This swashbuckling co-op game lets you and a few friends plunder, pillage, and probably sink your way across a huge open world. Early looks have been positive — getting three people to properly hoist sails and steer a frigate is riotous fun — but we won’t know if we’re looking at treasure or fool’s gold until “Sea of Thieves” docks this March.
“Psychonauts 2” (TBD 2018 | Xbox One, PS4, PC, Mac)
After 13 years ‘Psychonauts” is back. And we’ll find out if it was worth the wait in 2018.
It’s been 13 years since gamers spent an extremely weird season at the Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp, where making friendship bracelets took a backseat to exploring the brains of fellow campers. The sequel sees Raz and friends back at it, using their Psi Powers to save the Psychonauts from being undermined by a nefarious villain. If that means another platform level even half as cool as the legendary Milkman Conspiracy, it can’t get here soon enough.
“Detroit: Become Human” (Q2 2018 | PS4)
‘Detroit: Become Human’ will explore what it means to be alive in a game where your decisions drive the story.
Man meets machine in this neo-noir adventure from the mind of game visionary David Cage. Playing as a trio of androids, gamers grapple with artificial consciousness in a futuristic Detroit. With a branching story shaped by player choice and remarkable graphics, this cinematic thriller is one of Sony’s (SNE) biggest PS4 bets in 2018.
“Shenmue III” (Q3/Q4 2018 | PS4, PC)
It’s taken quite some time, 17 years to be exact, but Shenmue III is finally coming in 2018. We hope.
Ryo Hazuki’s tale of revenge began, amazingly enough, on the Sega Dreamcast in 1999. Thanks to a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign, it will finally continue in 2018. With series creator Yu Suzuki at the helm, the third “Shenmue” picks up where 2001’s “Shenmue II” left off. That will likely mean tons of plot, a helping of kung-fu, and maybe, just maybe, a forklift.
“Mega Man 11” (Q4 2018 | PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC)
The Blue Bomber is trading in his pixels for some lines and slick moves in ‘Mega Man 11.’
We don’t know much at all about the Blue Bomber’s eleventh game. According to its internet-breaking announcement trailer, it’s coming out in 2018 (at the moment), it stars our favorite weapon-gathering robot boy, and it trades old-school pixels for fresher polygonal graphics. It also looks super hard, which sounds about right. It’s Mega Man!
“Metro Exodus” (Q4 2018 | PS4, Xbox One, PC)
‘Metro Exodus’ returns to Russia’s post-apocalyptic wastes in 2018.
The third game in the tragically underappreciated “Metro” series takes gamers back to the frigid post-apocalyptic Russian wastelands, where they’ll scavenge gear, shoot mutated beasts, and try their damnedest to survive. Based on the other two “Metro” games, that’ll be plenty scary – and hopefully, plenty fun, too.
“Days Gone” (TBD 2018 | PS4)
‘Days Gone’ will have you fleeing seemingly endless hordes of zombies.
Another year, another batch of post-apocalyptic zombie games. When it comes to sheer undead numbers, however, “Days Gone” might take the rotting cake. Waves of walking corpses descend upon our hero in this impressive-looking open-world game, which looks like a creepy blend of World War Z and Sony’s own “The Last of Us.” Here’s hoping the final game is closer in quality to the latter.
“Dragon Ball FighterZ” (January 26 | PS4, Xbox One, PC)
‘Dragon Ball FighterZ’ looks so good, it’s as if you’re actually playing the long-running anime series about people yelling for 20 minutes.
Goku and his spiky-haired pals are back, and unsurprisingly, they look pretty amazing in this new fighting game based on the long-running anime franchise. Featuring a large cast of Dragon Ball characters and a slick, team-based fighting system, it will surely make the fighting game community go super Saiyan when it arrives early in the year.
“Soulcalibur VI” (TBD 2018 | PS4, Xbox One, PC)
‘Soulcalibur Vi’ is bringing the series’ weapons-based combat back for another round in 2018.
The legend will never die, after all. Released back in 2012, the last version of this weapons-based fighting game didn’t exactly set the world on fire. But the franchise’s roots run deep – Dreamcast fans still swear by the first “Soulcalibur” – and with “Tekken 7” producer Motohiro Okubo in charge, there’s reason to believe the sixth installment will recapture some of the series’ glory.
Spider-Man (Q2 2018 | PS4)
‘Spider-Man’ is swinging onto the PS4 in 2018.
Having enjoyed a spectacular big screen rebirth, the webslinger swings over to the PS4 in 2018. Developed by Insomniac, the new Spider-Man sees Peter Parker scurry around Manhattan saving citizens from the likes of the Kingpin and Mr. Negative. Its acrobatic combat and open-world exploration helped it win countless Best of Show awards at E3 2017, and with loads of smart, authentic fan touches (playable MJ! Miles Morales!), it’s shaping up to be the coolest Spidey game since 2004’s seminal Spider-Man 2.
“Crackdown 3” (Spring 2018 | Xbox One, PC)
‘Crackdown 3’ will let you destroy everything you can see, which is absolutely worth it.
Initially planned for 2016, this open-world action romp has run into a few speed bumps on its way to your Xbox One. But when you’re building a game in which every single thing can be destroyed, bumps are bound to happen. Expect ridiculous super powers, intense action, and more busted up buildings than a Transformers movie.
“The Last Night” (TBD 2018 | Xbox One, PC, Mac)
‘The Last Night’ is a stylish platformer that we’re hoping will have equally stunning gameplay.
Of all the indie games shown during Microsoft’s E3 2017 press conference, this is the one that had people talking. Blending a 16-bit visual aesthetic with contemporary animation techniques, this cyberpunk side-scrolling game is a stunner. We’re still not entirely sure how it plays – its developers call it a “cinematic platformer” – but we’re anxious to find out.
“Darksiders 3” (TBD 2018 | PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Want to fight the Seven Deadly Sins while cracking a sweet whip? ‘Darksiders 3’ should be game.
The fate of the third “Darksiders” game was up in the air for a few years there, but now it’s actually happening. That’s a good thing indeed. The first two “Darksiders” were critical hits, big, bold action adventure games each starring one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. This time out, we’ll play as Fury, a whip-wielding mage out to destroy the Seven Deadly Sins.

Continuity Note: This story takes place about 1000 years before 66 years after the events of Dragon Ball Z.
[1 December Age 893, Earth.]
Throughout the night, Trunks had been exploring the simulated universe in the popular arcade game Super Dragon Ball Heroes. To the Earthlings of the 9th Century, it was just a video game about famous warriors and battles from history, but it was in fact a secret project backed by the Time Patrol. The game world in SDBH was a scale model of the actual universe, based upon the Scroll of Eternity itself. This provided a unique gaming experience for the unsuspecting civilians, but it also allowed Time Patrollers like Trunks to conduct research and interact with historical events without altering history. His main objective to was to learn more about his new partner, Luffa. So far, he had spoken to several Saiyans across time and space, and each answer he found seemed to raise a new question.
At the Hero Lab, where the SDBH game was programmed and maintained, Trunks pondered these questions over takeout food. Dr. Leggings had cleared off her desk for the plates and napkins. Her assistant, a girl named Anne, was fussing over the bags of food, determined to make sure everyone’s order was accounted for and properly distributed. No one asked her to do this, but she was the type who couldn’t relax otherwise. She still complained about it, but Trunks knew she wouldn’t have it any other way.
Nearby, Beat and Note had rolled their own chairs to face one another, and they each propped their feet up on the edge of the other's seat. He had recruited them for help on a case when they were younger, and it was strange to see them as teenagers. He wondered if there was something more than friendship developing between them, or if they themselves were aware of it, but it seemed undignified to ask, so he let it go. There were more important things to consider anyway.
"The main job's been accomplished, at least," Trunks said after he swallowed a bite of eggroll. "I know where Camelia's key planets are located, and our historians can probably fill in a more complete map of the galaxy from that era. Then we can work with Luffa to figure out the correct date and location she came from."
"You don't sound very satisfied with that, Master," Note said as she fished out a piece of shrimp from her takeout box and fed it to Beat.
"I'm not," Trunks said. "We thought Luffa might be from a distant civilization, but one in the present day. Now, it's starting to look like she's from our galaxy, but eleven centuries in the past. Maybe twelve. The Rehval that I spoke with was the third Saiyan King with that name. The one Luffa mentioned may have been his father or grandfather."
"Why is that bad, Trunks?" Beat asked. He found a piece of pork in his box and passed it from his chopsticks to Note's chopsticks. "I mean, so what if she’s from twelve centuries in the past? You guys are the Time Patrol, after all. If anyone can send her home, you can."
"It's not that we can't send her back," Beat, " Trunks said. "The problem is that I'm not so sure we should. From the start, I just assumed Luffa was from the present time, or close to it. Without realizing it, I've shown Luffa things that will happen in her distant future. To us, it's the past, but if we send her back with that knowledge, she could change the course of history."
"Would she?" Note asked. "I mean, I'm sure she's an honorable person, or Shenron wouldn't have chosen her as your ally, Master. And now that she's seen the dangers involved with time anomalies, I'm sure she'd never tell anyone what she learned about our era."
"It's not that simple, I'm afraid," said Dr. Leggings. She was chewing on a bone from her order of spare ribs, and Trunks couldn't help but appreciate a very faint resemblance she had to his father. Leggings looked a lot more like his mother, particularly with the way she wore her green hair in a ponytail. She was no warrior, but there were definite hints of Saiyan to her. He liked this. In his own timeline, Trunks was an only child, and the last of his father's people. It was comforting to spend time in places like Hero Town and Toki Toki City, where he had an extended family of sorts, no matter how distant.
"What do you mean, doctor?" Note asked.
"We've seen how even minor changes in the past can cause major changes in the present," Leggings said. "The game world makes it easy to see, because we can jump from one time period to another very quickly, and we can reset those changes as easily as refreshing a computer. It's not just a matter of winning a battle you were supposed to lose, or telling secrets that you aren't supposed to know about. Luffa might change history without even realizing she's done it."
"She's right," Trunks said. "When I first went back to the past, I tried to be careful not to make any unwanted changes. I only wanted to warn Goku about the Cyborgs and give him the medicine for the heart virus. But somehow he got sick about six months later than I expected. I still have no idea why that happened. My guess is that he was training for the Cyborgs, so he must have been in a different place than he was in my timeline, so he wasn't infected under the same circumstances."
"You think Luffa might do something differently, now that she knows what's going to happen to the Saiyans?" Beat asked.
"She might," Trunks said. "Luffa hates King Rehval, and now that I've met the guy, I can't say I blame her. If I understand correctly, there's a direct throughline connecting Rehval's policies with the class system used by my grandfather on Planet Vegeta. So she might blame Rehval for the downfall of the Saiyan race, and try to take revenge. For that matter, she knows about the Dragon Balls on Namek. She might be tempted to use them in the past, to try to make wishes to prevent some of the terrible things she's seen in the future."
"That'd be good, wouldn't it?" Beat asked.
"Not for you, it wouldn't," Note said in a scolding tone. "Son Goku is your ancestor, isn't he? If the history of the Saiyans changes too much, then they might never send Goku to Earth, and you would never be born."
"Oh, right," Beat said. "Maybe Luffa should stay in Toki Toki City, then."
"And that could have consequences too," Trunks said. "Luffa might still play a role in history, however small. Shenron may have only brought her to us because he knew the Time Patrol would eventually put her back. But there's also the matter of her power level..."
"Power?" Anne asked. She had already finished her meal and was busily cleaning up the discarded cartons and wrappers. "Don't tell me that's a problem on top of everything else!"
"Yup, I'm afraid so, Anne," Trunks said. "Luffa's done well on her missions, but she's nowhere near as powerful as what I had expected. Now that I know what time period she's from, that makes more sense. King Rehval told me he was the strongest Saiyan of his era, and he's a lot stronger than Luffa, but he wouldn't stand a chance against the kinds of enemies I've had to fight. Luffa defeated the Ginyu Force, and Rehval might have handled them more easily but that's about all I could expect from either of them."
"That's nothing you can't fix, Master!" Note said. "I'm sure you can train Luffa just as well as you trained us!"
"I appreciate your confidence, Note," Trunks said, "but Luffa's not exactly what I'd call 'teachable'. Besides, she seems to have improved dramatically on her own. Even she doesn't understand how she's doing it, but she may catch up before too long. But if she returns to her own time with all that extra strength, then that could mess up history too. And if she has to remain with us, then I'm not sure she'll be any good on future missions."
"Why not?" Beat asked. "She's sure to get stronger."
"I thought so too, but maybe I've been taking that for granted," Trunks said. "I'm used to dealing with Saiyans descended from Son Goku, or from my own family. Goku and Vegeta were extraordinary fighters, even among Saiyans, but Luffa could be... Well, there's no gentle way to put this. She might not have the same potential."
"You're not going to just fire her, are you?" Note asked.
"Of course not," Trunks said. "If we can't send her home, I'm sure we can find a place for her in the Time Patrol. But we can't risk sending her on certain missions. Towa and Mira are dangerous, and if I'm right, their raids on history's warriors are only going to get bolder. Luffa could find herself in deep waters with no one to help her. Shenron may have granted my wish, and maybe she is the best person for the job, but that doesn't mean I can gamble with her life. I need more information before she goes back into the field."
"I'm sure whatever happens, it'll all work out, Trunks," Beat said.
"You always say stuff like that," Note groaned.
"Well, I'm right, aren't I?" Beat shrugged. "Well, most of the time, anyway."
"This has been fun, but I should probably get moving," Trunks said. "I need to report my findings to the Time Patrol, and maybe the Supreme Kai of Time has a fresh lead on Towa."
"You have to leave already?" Beat asked. "But it feels like you just got here!"
"Yeah, it was beginning to feel like the old days," Note said.
"I've missed you guys too," Trunks said. He stood up and brushed loose grains of rice from his pants. "You've grown up a lot while I've been away. You too, Anne."
"I guess it's kind of childish how I keep calling you, 'Master'," Note said. "Force of habit, I suppose."
"You're welcome to call me 'Trunks' if you want, Note. But to be honest, it reminds me of when I was a kid. I used to call Gohan 'Master', back when he trained me to fight the Cyborgs. He meant a lot to me. Hearing you say it... It's a good feeling."
"I'll keep the Hero Switches ready in case you come back," Leggings said. "You'll probably need to do some follow-up work to pin down an exact time for Luffa."
"Good call," Trunks said as he slung his sword over his shoulder. "I'll probably have to bring her with me. I'll see if I can get her to make some more of that lasagna she made for us the other day."
"Lasagna?" Beat asked. But Trunks vanished before he could get an answer.

[4 March, Age 850. Toki Toki City.]
Luffa felt ridiculous doing this, but she had no other ideas for how to handle the situation. She knew the way from her apartment to the Time Nest, and the Time Vault was unlocked and unguarded, but she had no idea what to do on her own. Trunks had always contacted her whenever she was needed, and he always had the Scroll ready to send her on her next mission. Without him, it seemed that the Time Vault was a useless building with a tree sticking out of the roof. And so, her only way forward was the Supreme Kai of Time, who lived in a modest capsule house in the Time Nest, next door to the Time Vault. Luffa felt awkward simply entering the house, and so she went back to her apartment and baked a cake. That wouldn't make things less awkward for her, but at least there would be something to eat during her visit.
"Luffa, Hi!" Chronoa said as she answered the knock on her door. "Ooh, what's that? It smells good."
"Uh, I got in a mood, so I made some cake," Luffa said, in a failed attempt to sound nonchalant. "And I thought I should check and see if you and Trunks had any update on the search."
"Afraid not," Chronoa said. "But perfect timing on the cake. I just put on a pot of tea. Come on in!"
The interior of Chronoa's house was littered with technological gizmos. There were entire jet engines laying around the Time Nest, and it seemed that this was because those larger objects were the only ones that wouldn't fit inside. Chronoa tossed several of them off one of the couch cushions and gestured for Luffa to take a seat.
"I'm glad you finally came over," Chronoa said. "I was worried that you might be having trouble fitting in with the Time Patrol."
"It's uh... it's not so bad," Luffa said. "My roommate is kind of weird, but we get along well enough. I've met a few people here."
"They're all a very special bunch of people," Chronoa said. "I haven't been able to get to know them all as well as I'd like to, but they've helped me out a lot. That goes for you too, Luffa."
"Listen, uh... I think I owe you an apology," Luffa said. "I was in a pretty bad place right before I ended up here, and... well, I might have taken out some of my frustrations on you and your staff."
"You've had to adjust to a lot of changes very quickly, Luffa," Chronoa said. "And we didn't exactly give you a choice about coming here. You're entitled to get frustrated with us."
"Thanks, but... I'm a mercenary," Luffa said. "Well, I used to be. My parents always taught me how important it was to maintain a professional discipline around the clients. I don't think I've lived up to my own standards."
"I don't think of the other Time Patrollers as mercenaries, Luffa," Chronoa said. "We're a team, and we're friends. At least, I'd like to think of you as a friend."
"Yeah, I guess so," Luffa said. "I... Can I ask you something?"
"Sure!"
"You're a god, aren't you? A god of time."
"That's right."
"Don't you already know how all of this turns out?"
Chronoa chuckled as she sipped her tea.
"Did I say something wrong?" Luffa asked.
"No, I get that a lot, actually," Chronoa said. "The short answer is: no, I don't know the future. Not in the way you're thinking of. I watch over time, and maintain the flow of time. When it's necessary, I correct problems in that flow. But I don't make time, or control it."
"It's just... I'm kind of anxious to get back on the trail of those demons," Luffa said. "And we've been waiting for them to make their next move, and it occurred to me that it doesn't make much sense that we have to wait. You could jump ahead to the moment when they've already made their play."
"Well, now that's something I could do," Chronoa said. I can travel to the future and find out when the next mission happens. I could even take you with me so you wouldn't have to wait."
"You can?" Luffa said.
"Oh yeah!" Chronoa said. "I can do a lot of things. But I shouldn't do it, so I won't."
"Oh."
"It's not an arbitrary rule, either," Chronoa said. "Most Supreme Kais are only permitted to travel forward through time, and only to observe future events. They can't interfere, so they have to limit their use of that power. With me, the problem is that if I skip around too much, I run the risk of upsetting the balance of my own timeline. Things have to proceed in order. That's what time is all about."
"I guess that makes sense," Luffa said. "Honestly, I had a feeling it wouldn't be that easy, or you would have already done it. But I had to ask."
"You’re right, it’s not that easy. In fact, it's part of the reason I established the Time Patrol," Chronoa said. "For millions of years, keeping watch over the flow of time was pretty simple. I just had to keep Tokitoki fed and watered, give him plenty of enrichment. But as the universe grows older, it becomes more complex. Once, there was no Supreme Kai of Time. We didn't even need one. But then we did, and now we've reached a point where I need a whole staff to help maintain things. If I could just jump back and forth in time any way I wanted, maybe I could do the whole thing alone. But it’s more satisfying this way, with all of you.”
"Why mortals? Why not get other Kais to do this work?" Luffa asked.
"Because there aren't enough of us, for one thing," Chronoa said. "We come from a place called the 'World Core'. There aren't many Core People, and few of us ever achieve the rank of Kai. Fewer still ascend to the status of Grand Kai, and even fewer make it to Supreme Kai. There used to be seven Supreme Kais in this universe, including me. These days, there's only three."
"Is three enough?" Luffa asked.
"For now, it'll have to be," Chronoa said. "Besides, I've found that mortals are very dedicated and resourceful. To say nothing of all the technology they produce..."
She reached for an end table and picked up a machine that looked vaguely like a can opener combined with an alarm clock. Luffa expected her to use the device, but instead Chronoa simply admired its surfaces.
"So what's all this stuff for, anyway?" Luffa asked, gesturing to the assortment of similar gadgets that lay in every direction.
"Nothing in particular," Chronoa said. "I just find their designs fascinating. The electronics, the cogwheels, the little blinking lights. It's helpful for contemplating the nature of time."
"If you say so," Luffa said.
"Without time, everything would happen all at once," Chronoa explained. "Birth, death, creation, destruction, none of that would mean anything without the passage of time to separate those moments. The oven you used to bake this cake. Without time, there would be no need for it. Cooking would be meaningless. You can't preheat an oven or leave a cake inside for seven hours, not when there's no hours."
"S-seven hours?" Luffa asked, but Chronoa paid no mind.
"Mixing the ingredients would be pointless, too. Even the pan you put it in, it would be unnecessary, because there could be no cause or effect. There could be no hunger, because there would be no time for you to become hungry."
"That's why you like these tools, then?" Luffa asked. "Their functions remind you of the flow of time?"
"Yes, that's one way of looking at it," Chronoa said. She picked up another object that had a handle connected to a transparent dome on wheels. Inside the dome were several colorful plastic balls, which bounced around inside as Chronoa pushed it along the floor.
"What does that thing do?" Luffa asked.
"Oh, this is just a child's toy," Chronoa said. "Same idea though."
"Okay..." Luffa decided this was as good a time as any to serve the cake. It was yellow with chocolate frosting, a recipe which suited her aesthetics, though she had no idea what flavor “yellow” was supposed to be. She wondered if “yellow” was a kind of fruit, like the oranges used to make the juice she had discovered while shopping.
"Very impressive," Chronoa said as she took a bite. "You must have turned the oven up to full power for this."
"Uh, not exactly," Luffa said nervously. She was beginning to get the impression that Chronoa had no idea how cooking worked. "Jayncho found a recipe, and they had everything I needed in the Industrial District. I've been using my downtime to get a handle on Earth cuisine."
"That's great! You know... when we figure out how to get you home, Luffa, you wouldn't have to stay there. You could come back for missions."
"Huh?"
"We have a lot of Patrollers who still live on Earth, in their own native eras. Mostly ranging from Age 850 to 1050, but there are a few exceptions, like Trunks."
"Well, that's nice and all," Luffa said, "but I don't know that it would work for me..."
"Do you have any family?"
Luffa hesitated before answering. "No," she said. "It's just me." To explain further would require her to reveal that she knew she was from the distant past, and she wasn't ready to divulge that just yet. She wasn't sure she ever would be. But somehow, sitting in Chronoa's home, sharing snacks with her while they watched the view outside her window, Luffa felt like she could trust her.
She just wouldn't trust her today. Not yet. Like Chronoa had said, these things had to happen in the proper order.
"Have you heard of ‘Providence,’ Chronoa?" Luffa asked.
"I know the term, if that's what you mean." she said with her mouth full.
"My... a friend of mine, she believed in a divine plan. I just wondered if you, or one of the other Kais, had any connection to that."
"Are you religious yourself, Luffa?"
"Not really. But I've known people who were. You wouldn't know a god with nine eyes, by any chance, would you?"
"No, I can't say that I do," Chronoa said.
"What about Beerus?"
"Oh, well that's different," Chronoa said. "You see-- Wait, what was that?"
She put her plate on the coffee table and stood up, as though looking for something beyond the walls of her house.
"What is it?" Luffa asked. Her own senses picked up nothing out of the ordinary.
"Something's wrong," Chronoa said. "We need to go to the Time Vault."
"Is it Towa and Mira?" Luffa asked.
"I'm not sure," Chronoa said, “but I think it could be."
Luffa punched her right hand with her left as she stood up from the sofa. At last, it seemed like her waiting was over.

[24 December, Age 762. Planet Namek.]
The Namekian Dragon Balls were ordinary stones. Two wishes had been granted, but they petrified upon the death of their creator, Guru. When Frieza arrived to discover this predicament, he was furious. So furious, that he wasted no time in destroying the objects of his wrath. Within minutes, Krillin, Vegeta, and the Namekian child, Dende, were all dead. Piccolo, newly resurrected by the Dragon Balls, joined the battle, but far too later to do any good. Gohan was next, and then the only one left was Goku.
"Who... are you?" Frieza asked, as Goku cradled his dead son in his arms. "Never mind. I don't need to know."
Goku followed the others soon after.

[4 March, Age 850. Toki Toki City.]
"It has to be Towa," Chronoa said. She had the Scroll of Eternity unfurled on the great octagonal table in the Time Vault. Luffa watched over her shoulder, while Tokitoki flapped his wings and hooted overhead.
"This looks like the same day as the Ginyu Force battle I was just in," Luffa said.
"It is," Chronoa said. "This new temporal change takes place thirty-seven minutes after you left. Towa must have decided it was the last place we would expect her to strike. I didn't think she was prepared to try her energy stealing techniques on someone as powerful as Frieza."
Luffa had never actually seen Frieza before. Until now, she had only heard about him. During her previous mission, the Ginyu Force and Vegeta had spoken of him as being present on Namek, but occupied elsewhere. Before that, she had heard about Frieza's conquest and destruction of the Saiyan homeworld from the Toki Toki City historian, Dewar. Dewar had said that Frieza was a clansman of his own species, and now that Luffa could see Frieza in the mystical images generated by the Scroll, she could see the resemblance. Mostly, Frieza had purple colorations wherever Dewar had blue, and Frieza didn't bother wearing clothes. He was a white-skinned, muscular humanoid with no hair and three-toed feet. A long, thick tail waved behind him. The purple aura from Towa's magic seemed to suit his cruel, indifferent expression.
"Looks like it's the same story as before," Luffa said. "Frieza got a power boost and he overwhelmed these guys too quickly, so I'll have to step in and balance the scales."
"It's not that simple," Chronoa warned. "Frieza is far more powerful than anyone you've faced so far."
"He can't swap bodies like Captain Ginyu, can he?" Luffa asked.
"No, but--"
"Well then, this should be a lot more straightforward," Luffa said, She held up her hands and began cracking her knuckles.
"Wait," Chronoa said. "Luffa, I really think we should hold off on this until Trunks gets back."
"What for?" Luffa asked. "I'm the one who has to go on these missions, and I'm ready right now. With any luck, those miserable demons will still be there, and I can pick up where I left off."
"You don't know what you're dealing with, Luffa," Chronoa warned. "Every time you've come back from these missions, you've been badly hurt. Fighting Frieza is one thing. If he hurts you, you can be automatically recalled to the Time Nest before you die. But if Towa decides to step in, that might not work. She's already threatened you, and there's a lot we don't know about her temporal manipulation abilities."
"Then it's time we found out," Luffa insisted. "I don't know what kind of Saiyans you have working for you in the Time Patrol, but I'm the kind that doesn't back down from a challenge. I think your pet Dragon noticed that, and maybe that's why he brought me here to help you out."
"There's more at stake here than whatever chip you have on your shoulder, Luffa," Chronoa said. "I can tell you're out to prove something. I don't know what, but I won't risk your life like this."
"And what happens if they try to alter history somewhere else while we're waiting around?" Luffa asked. "We need to address this sooner rather than later. And no matter what we do, it's going to be me who ends up going. You know I'm right, Supreme Kai of Time. I wouldn't be here if I weren't."
Chronoa regarded her for a moment, then looked back at the Scroll. "All right, we'll try it your way," she said. "But I'll be watching, and at the first sign of trouble, I'm pulling you out of there."
"Thanks," Luffa said. "I was thinking about making a grab for the Scroll, but I didn’t want to upset you. I've never fought a god before, and I didn't want to make things awkward between us.”
"Uh... sure. Well, promise me that you’ll keep that in mind if I have to bring you back from the mission early," Chronoa said. "If you can't handle Frieza, then you definitely don't need to be picking fights with me."
Luffa smiled as she picked up the Scroll, and then she was gone.

Nakama & Shame
I think anime kinda made me disillusioned to friendships. To those who already watch anime often, I think you may already know what I’m alluding to – the unearthly dedication and support to one’s friends (sometimes even enemies) because you believe in the good and growth in them. The incessant self-sacrifice in order to induce safety and/or happiness for a loved one; someone cherished so innocently, so purely, that there is no romantic tie. Just an unpolluted friendship, a bond that is so strong, all the evils of the world – EVEN DEATH – cannot break you apart.
But maybe this perspective isn’t exclusive to anime; maybe it’s even a character trait embedded in Japanese culture.
I walked into a ramen shop in Boston about a month ago and saw this written in huge, white letters upon the burgundy wall over my head:
NAKAMA [n.] A person that shares your destiny for whom you would sacrifice your life; Its meaning is too entangled to be “friend” but it is also too deep to be just “companion.”
If there’s an entire country who really embodies this notion (no matter how small or large), that’s pretty awesome.
Under the font, were drawings of manga-esque characters with their backs turned to the customers but their fists in the air. As usual, upon seeing these kinds of images, I had an immediate feeling of camaraderie and hospitality – inspiration even.
So I was curious.
After researching a bit online (for about five minutes), nakama may actually just be a fictional trope in Japanese television – actually given its deeper meaning from the legendary anime One Piece – but Japan is famously known for its low crime rate, its unarmed officers, its friendly strangers who will fasten a young man’s tie because it’s undone and he’s headed for an interview, and they want him to succeed! So will gladly aid in his looking sharp without needing to be related to this person in any way. Then they’ll wish him the best of luck and pray he gets the job! As if they knew him. As if they were family. So even if nakama is a fictional concept, it seems there is an innate goodness instilled in the Japanese people that obviously gave root to the concept of nakama. An innate, unrelated goodness we haven’t really grasped anywhere else (that I’ve been exposed to at least).
And whether it be instilled in Japanese tradition or simply an injection to their entertainment, I love that I grew up with this idea of nakama. Though this mentality has (I’ll be perfectly honest) made me lose a few friendships here and there, it’s definitely kept the right ones closer and stronger for longer than I expected or felt I deserved. My most valuable friends have respected and even reflected my personalized form of nakama because of the familial relationship it had inevitably created between us.
I was exposed to anime at quite a young age, and I was re-exposed to anime at the crack of dawn of every morning as my brother snuck out of our bedroom to watch reruns of Dragon Ball on the Cartoon Network; the early hours were a safe haven for a relatively violent and bloody show of foreign origins despised by most parents but loved by some teensy children (such as ourselves). He used to take out our most recently purchased bag of pita bread and pack of American cheese from the fridge and would nibble his way through the end of each – until we had nothing left to use for our family breakfasts during the weekends (reflecting on this now, I’m sure this drove both my mom and dad a little crazy).
Now, I often credit my having an older brother for a lot of my toughness and a lot of my disconnect with the common American young lady – my best friends in school were mostly boys. We were always playing Pretend. Dreaming we were magical creatures climbing trees and burning down buildings was a lot more fun than being a part of the local girl-gang in my opinion (which I was also a part of. But I picked my shifts). I owed this early exposure and exercising of a speedily-expanding imagination to my older brother and to the shows he didn’t let me watch.
The shows I only watched while hiding behind the couch and peering over the cushions with my little fingers hinged on the edges of suspense. Clawing through the fabric – just to watch Dragon Ball without him knowing; without him catching me and demanding that I leave (because apparently I was deemed too young for such mature content). Despite him being only two years older than me and like… eight. If he ever did spot me, I’d have to not only be yelled at (mind you, while my parents were sleeping in our tiny apartment in Los Angeles which struck a whole other type of fear through my 3-foot-frame) but I would also have to sink to the floor and stare at the wall for the next two hours – behind the couch, listening to the show instead. Painting the scenes in my head as I had to imagine they were on the TV screen because my evil, older brother claimed I was too immature to see it.
* I will have you know, this was the final power trip I allowed him to have over me. The future was bleak for my older brother, but bright for my unrelenting defiance and eventual overthrow of his tyrannous nature. Bullies are not to be tolerated. *
But I was just so damn curious. Like what could be so amazing, so interesting, that it pulled my brother out of his bed at 5 am every morning like clockwork to eat cold bread and cheese and sit two inches away from the TV screen for the next two/three hours??
It had to be thee coolest thing ever.
So I risked it all. I risked the deportation back to my bedroom, the hellish fire that could awaken my sleeping parents, their hellish fire after being woken by their son’s hellish fire which would then be redirected to me as the source of his hellish fire that had woken them up in the first place.
It all didn’t seem worth it. (But it was).
I couldn’t wake up as early as him every day, but I always made it out to see at least the concluding hour of Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z those mornings. I did it so often, that eventually, my brother refrained from fending me off with a foam baseball bat or a stick. Maybe he understood that I was his little sponge whom he could influence and make awesome, rather than the rabid gerbil he made me out to be that ejected out of our mother’s womb for the sole purpose of ruining his life. My seat placement beside him was a promotion. I had graduated to soft-plaything; something that could still be tormented and abused, but should no longer be feared.
I didn’t understand why he liked cold pita bread and American cheese so much, but that seemed to be the Snack of Kings. And I had just been promoted. Beggars can’t be choosey, y’know?
This development in our sibling relationship was also when I discovered my severe case of lactose-intolerance. So in a way, anime’s role in my life was more than just a didactic ruling of friendship and sibling-warfare, but also a court hearing for prospective-allergies.
After discovering my intolerance of yellow-American cheese, my mom introduced my small intestine to goat milk, goat cheese, and an array of goat-rather-than-cow related products; it was a comparatively smelly alternative lifestyle-change that I remember enjoying. I also was not a very picky kid – but again, I saw myself as a trampled vagabond of the streets – so I took what was give to me without question.
But I was a sanctified vagabond. I had made my way from the nosebleeds to the courtside all on my own, a product of my own resilience and ambition. And I thought I was incredible. Like… I wasn’t even old enough for this show. My older brother said I wasn’t allowed to watch these things, and yet here I was… him petting my head and eating cheese while I ogled skyward toward a sizzling, 90s, television filled with awkward screaming, high-voltage blasts and decapitated heads. I was taking it all in and I was loving it.
And one of the reasons I loved it was because Goku (who’s literal growth we have avidly followed from Dragon Ball to DBZ and onward) had a son that he fought alongside. Like how cool would that be?! His son, Gohan, was around my brother’s/my age, depending on the episode, and was being taken out on missions?! Like what?! The amount of TRUST that Goku not only had in his son but in his comrades taking care of his son was powerful. He had enough faith that his son could help him – the greatest Super Saiyan in the world – “fight crime,” defeat enemies, purge the universe of evil!
But also knew when to tell Gohan to like back the f*ck up cause he was 6 and had little to no training. And that was dope.
I was six. I could be great. I could have friends bigger and better than me (which I already did ‘cause I was the shortest kid in my class and still am at the bold age of 22) but friends who still believed in me in spite of that! I could be everyone’s equal. The grown-ups would see my latent potential, the bold energy I harbored, and pay no mind to my age. They would look at me and expect greatness; not because my father was their friend nor because my father was great, but because I was their friend and I was great.
They would do anything for me. Even give up their life for me? Whoa.
The episode that is engrained in my memory most was my brother’s favorite – we re-watched this scene countless times once YouTube became a thing on the internet and a mighty weapon for internet babies like us to digest.
Gohan turning Super Saiyan 2 for the first time.
Mostly I just remember Android 16’s head bouncing around on the dirt, and his dreary eyes looking up as he drawled… “Gooooohaaaaaaan. Let it gooo…” in this deep, robot voice – but let’s remember why 16’s head was rolling around at everyone’s feet. Because he had just pounced on Cell’s back with the belief that he still had a bomb lodged inside his body and was ready to self-destruct – to sacrifice his own life in order to save his comrades. Comrades now, but enemies not so long ago. Hell, Android 18 was going around bustin’ everyone’s asses and suddenly she’s marrying Krillin – goes to show that bad guys have can have a lot of good inside them (and if you’re marrying Krillin… you have a lot of good inside you).
But alas, 16 no longer had a bomb inside his body, and therefore Cell blasted him to bits and kicked his skull aside like it was the neighbor-kid’s deflated soccer ball. This is where 16 recites his epic speech of encouragement:
“It is not a sin to fight for the right cause… It is because you cherish life that you must protect it… I know how you feel, Gohan.” Despite being an android.
And then Cell stepped on his face and his head exploded – but! With all the coils, gadgets, chips, and metal – out came a lot of blood; and that was very humanizing to me. That things that bleed – animals, humans, and apparently androids – we all have a quality that bonds us, a frailty and an appreciation for life that unifies us. We are all unified by the blood in our veins. Despite being just an android! Gohan was right! 16 did love life, and he gave it up because he loved his friends even more and wanted them to enjoy the rest of their existences. It’s an abrasive scene, but thanks to my older brother, Andrew, one I’ve seen a million times nonetheless.
And due to the power of emotions! Gohan crosses the threshold and reaches Super Saiyan 2.
With glistening tears in his eyes.
It reminded me of the samurai – avenging the death of a loved one. Pride. Brotherhood. Bonds. Protection. Justice. Self-sacrifice… Nakama.
And then came Naruto.
This could easily mark the end of my existence. I lost my youth at the mere age of 12. Cause if Naruto doesn’t traumatize you for life, then bless your soul – nothing else can, my child.
Masahi Kishimoto intended the first arc of Naruto Uzumaki’s adventures to be his last as well. That single manga was illustrated for the notoriously heart-wrenching plot movement of Squad 7 facing Zabuza, Demon of the Hidden Mist, and the orphan Haku. (Let’s not get too into this though cause that’ll just tear me up in seconds).
Transformed into an anime, this plot movement was the first for many of us to watch. And very quickly were we faced with the complex of sympathizing for the enemy, maybe a little too much.
Zabuza Momochi, a rogue Shinobi of the Village Hidden in the Mist is known as one of the most dangerous ninjas of the land. Very unexpectedly, we learn he also practically raised an orphan child named Haku on his own, training him as a swordsman to defend himself. Haku has a special ability that people in his village feared; therefore, people like Haku and Haku’s mother were summarily executed. So Haku’s mother taught him to keep his ability a secret – until her own spouse discovered their secret and murdered her. Haku lost control in response to this, kills his own father and the rest of his village and is then found by Zabuza Momochi…
In this first arc, Zabuza is hired as an assassin that inevitably clashes with Squad 7 (our protagonists), and we’re obviously rooting for Squad 7 to survive! We want them to win. The lead character, Naruto is in Squad 7! Clearly we like them the most. Then why is it that every fan of the show immortalizes Zabuza and Haku?
Because we see a bond between Zabuza and Haku. When Haku appears in the mist to sacrifice his safety in order to keep his caretaker safe – that act changes everything.
As of yet – there is no strong bond holding together Squad 7. Yeah, Naruto and his comrades fight their hardest, and one of them almost to the death; they have to utilize the teamwork they’d been avoiding for so long – but that’s not nakama. The bond of love between an assassin and his conditioned apprentice, though? THAT was nakama.
You see that moment, that presentation of empathy, love, and care for something other than themselves made those characters greater – unselfish, forgiving, merciful and kind to someone outside of them – making them stronger than any of the adored members of our beloved Squad 7. Their pasts, their wrongdoings, their sins I won’t say meant nothing… but they suddenly meant much less. Because we just witnessed their humanity, and much more than their humanity – selflessness.
In fiction – we frequently equate the enemy with negative qualities. They are the enemy, therefore they must carry no virtue. They are all evil.
But a person who steals bread, inspired by the love for their starving children… A person is risking their life, reputation, and future with an evil act in order to protect/save others.
Self-sacrifice is the greatest sacrifice is it not? And great self-sacrifice I imagine should be the hardest decision to make. The amount of bravery and inner-peace needed to execute such a choice… is impressive. I am grateful to have never been placed in the predicament where I must choose between my life and another’s. Would I have the strength to give up everything for someone I love? Could I make that decision? I have no idea, but I can tell you that when I see a mother sacrifice herself for her child, or any adult jump in front of a child they are unrelated to who is in harm… there’s something magical behind that choice. There’s a passion, a power of emotion that exceeds the brain and is pure heart – which may be stupid – but it’s selfless. And altruism is admirable if not the most admirable.
Nakama is a purely altruistic act, and though I cannot say I’ve ever felt that I would give my life for my friends in a moment (which seems like nakama-extremism), I know I sacrifice a lot for my loved ones, even when we are not blood related. I donate a lot, I believe in people a lot, I offer plenty of my time which in my opinion… is giving my life.
But a lot of people do not understand this idea of nakama and are very quick to judge it, if not feel unsettled by it; it is not clinginess, it is not desperation; it is just empathy, faith, and affection but it does not take away for someone’s love for themselves – at least it shouldn’t. It is there only to make you stronger.
So maybe that’s why some of our most evil characters in popular culture are incredibly strong. Enemies in fiction aren’t always 100% made out of Satan-Squeeze. We do see some humanity in our antagonists here and there. But there’s a weird, religious, consecration when a bad guy “sees the light” and decides to suddenly “go green and be good.” So it almost seems like… there really is no adversary… cause… in an instant, they’re absolutely cleansed. So… if everyone can be saved, than that means everyone is made of goodness. And then what a relief that is! What a belief that is! Ahhhh what a happy, spiritually satisfying ending ☺.
This brings up the complicated character development between Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha. (We’re diving into murky waters, my friends).
Sasuke Uchiha was my favorite character from the moment I laid eyes on him, but he has probably one of the most tragic pasts I’ve ever had the honor of absorbing. Born of the Uchiha Clan, Sasuke was raised among some of the most intelligent, perceptive, and valuable ninja-warriors of Konoha. Their trademark is the Sharingan – a powerful dōjutsu (an eye technique) that augments a ninja’s insight and hypnotism against their rival… basically. Sasuke lives a pretty normal and happy childhood, constantly idolizing his older brother Itachi and striving to be just as strong and helpful to the community as his brother has been. Then we discover Itachi has had undisclosed motives for a long time. Abruptly, he unleashes… going on a rampage, slaughtering the whole entire Uchiha clan, including his and Sasuke’s parents… but leaves Sasuke alive and alone.
So Sasuke’s mission practically from birth becomes to avenge his clan, locate, and defeat his brother.
But then he meets Naruto Uzumaki and Sakura Haruno who seem to veer him from the path of self-destruction and revenge. He finds a family he once lost amongst Squad 7 and its hilarious but unsurpassable sensei, The Copy Ninja, Kakashi Hatake (who, for lengthy reasons, also attains an eye with the clan’s Sharingan). There is a bond growing between all four of these characters, an empathy, a pure caretaking quality that was not there when they were up against Zabuza and Haku.
But inescapably… we lose Sasuke to the dark side (and let’s just leave it at that for now).
One of the worst things that can probably happen to you as a human being (aside from an audience member) is seeing your favorite character go bad. Yeah sure it’s kinda cool and they become even edgier than they once were, but there’s nothing cool about seeing someone you believed to be your best friend go rogue and forsake the home you built together because suddenly you and your friendship mean absolutely nothing to them… That always sucks.
But according to nakama, you have an unbreakable bond… yet you see the goodness being sucked out of your nakama’s soul… does that mean that you give up on the friend who has given up on you? Do you turn your back on the criminal your best friend has now become?
One of my dad’s favorite movies is Seabiscuit. He’s definitely a big fan of the comeback-kid and always tended to root for the underdog. His favorite quote in the film became one to live by in our household. It was when Chris Cooper’s character was asked why he kept trying to fix this horse that had injured its ankle. It was a racehorse. With an injured ankle it had become useless. And to that he responded,
“You don’t throw a whole life away just because it’s banged up a little.” Beautiful.
So when your BFF goes all homicidal on the townspeople… what do you do? Well, because of anime, I don’t think I’d ever be able to completely hate them. Even if I had the responsibility of killing them… the nakama between us would still exist despite their death and my being the cause of their death.
I am not quite sure that this is a good thing. You see… sometimes… I do believe we need to lose friends, and we shouldn’t keep raising excuses for why it’s okay that they’ve truly begun to suck as people. It is their fault. You have tried. You’re now beginning to work yourself to the bone defending an ego that apparently doesn’t even want your defending.
The fatal flaw of nakama: difficulty knowing when to let go.
But the problem that I feel most people face, is letting others go too easily. I watch my acquaintances releasing friends like breath out of their lungs sometimes, and the stories I hear of them being suddenly dropped from a friendship are staggering… I think people have forgotten how to be brave, and forgotten how to be there for our buddies when they need us the most and evidentially become the most difficult versions of themselves to deal with. It is hard being a good friend – if anyone tells you otherwise I can confidently state that they are wrong and probably have a lot of interpersonal issues as well. But it is hard being there when someone needs you, especially when they need you more than that one time when they got the news.
I credit this rude awakening to my emotional intelligence, my time spent being introspective and aware of the people and the world around me – to my understanding and my empathy. Because I know I’ve “strayed-from-the-path” before, I know I’ve hit concrete walls and sulked in the pitfalls of depression, and more often than not was abandoned by my friends rather than finding them waiting for me to wake up on the other side as a new person. And I’ll tell you what – I got used to the abandonment, but I never accepted it as a viable approach. So every time a friend of mine hit the concrete walls or were in the jaws of anxiety and stress, I was always sitting cross-legged with my head cocked to the side, my ears wide-awake, and a smile in my pocket for when they were ready. ‘Cause I knew that’s what could’ve helped me. I knew that support meant something to people. I was showing my friends in pain that they had a cheerleader, and I was going to be rooting for them until they’d come back to Earth. And did I learn this from the air? Did I think of this approach by myself? Ruminating on it, anime and manga trained me to be a good friend before I even had a friend to be good to.
But what about when they don’t come back to Earth? And what if it’s because they refuse to? When do you let go, and does letting go mean ‘stop loving?’
That’s when things get complicated.
But nakama still doesn’t lose its value.
My BFF is a homicidal freak now, right? Okay. So it appears that I’m head of the defense force that is meant to take my ex-BFF DOWN TO THE GROUND… those characters that suddenly just flip the switch and delete every memory they have had with that person… that’s great and all, and I’m sure a useful tool when you’re in the business of saving lives (you’ve essentially deleted your bias towards a person who is now your enemy) but that doesn’t feel very human to me. Like we just discussed above, you’ve also given up on someone. And the idea of giving up on someone does not exist in anime. Unless it’s a supporting-role who had a hand in poorly raised one of our vindictive protagonists. But they always feel shame in the end anyway, and the protagonist has the inner peace to forgive them because of their understanding, their love, and at the root of it – nakama.
So how and why did nakama appear in manga and anime? Where did it come from and why is it still so prevalent in Japanese culture? Could it be a reaction to something rather than an intrinsic value?
What if nakama was in some way a response to shame? That if you did not behave this way towards your comrades (for example fellow samurai) you would then be identified as a coward, unwilling to risk your life for your brethren. Therefore you have brought dishonor to you family. Dishonor on your cow! (as per Mushu) and shame upon your head. An ultimate, sin according to the ancient culture, inducing suicides throughout the empire.
So could the innocent idea of nakama have been born from the embarrassment of shame? And is that why western society does not grasp this value… as a value? /how do we experience shame and do we value it?
What is our idea of shame? I’ll tell ya, it usually doesn’t stem from how we treat other people:
Someone cheated on their spouse? Yeah well it happens.
Someone keeps cheated on their math tests? Shame.
A person is corrupt in the workplace? It’s terrible, we hate it but… what’re we gonna do, it happens.
A person comes out as gay. Shame.
A human who likes a unique style of music. Shame.
A human who was raped. Shame.
A teenager who isn’t athletic like their parents. SHAAAME.
You see, we treat shame as a form of social acceptance, and by that I mean, if you do not meet the criteria of the put-together citizen, you should be ashamed of yourself! During the Edo Period of Premodern Japan, if you were a Samurai and could not uphold Bushido; “the way of the warrior,” the moral code of that culture; shame was brought upon you. But their moral code was often in the pursuit of benefitting other people.
The eight rules of bushido code are as follows:
Righteousness Heroic Courage Benevolence/Compassion Respect Integrity Honor Duty and Loyalty Self-Control
These laws outline the responsibilities of samurai; to be deeply honest with yourself and your neighbor, to not only find opportunities to help your neighbor but to create those opportunities when they do not arise. Understanding that true strength does not come in proving your strength. Staying true to your word and being aware that you are the judgment you sleep with at night. Decisions you make and how these decisions are carried out are a reflection of who you truly are.
For, “you cannot hide from yourself.”
But it appears that our in-vogue moral code dictates that you must hide from yourself because if you are different… you are a deviant. Its standing does not rely on our treatment of others but more on our ability to conform to a certain standard of acceptable normalcy. Not too weird but not too common. So our code just seems to be self-imposed and self-inflicted. We don’t seem to really value how we treat one another but how well we mold to one another. I think the last time I was taught that being kind to others was a code to live by was in kindergarten, when I learned, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Pretty much, treat people how you’d wanna be treated. And then of course “keep your hands to yourself.” * thumbs up *
But after that… I dunno… there wasn’t much stress on the ethical upbringing of our population, of our citizens. Do we really not care that much? Yeah sure, I took ethics in college, I took several courses in Sociology and Philosophy and studied the Ethics of Documentary Filmmaking… Literature can often times be a nice bridge into empathy as well… but these were all choices. I was not obligated to take any of these classes… which means… a lot of people don’t. And won’t. And even if they did/do, college may have been a late start to have these discussions.
We are raising a population of Narutos that will not chase after their Sasukes. Generations of children that believe hurting someone is an okay practice if that person hurt them first and feel no shame afterwards. That reflecting fire proves your strength rather than dousing it and turning your cheek and being a bigger person. The way we’re going, everyone is going to want their fire to be larger and brighter than their enemies’ and their friends,’ igniting an egotistical flame that’ll just burn down city hall… thanks guys.
Hot-heads are generally looked down upon in Japanese entertainment. They’re a source of humor and the butt of everybody’s jokes because they’re assumed to be quite immature and stupid. They are nothing like their leaders; they lack self-control and respect, empathy, and awareness. In these shows, characters have certain codes to live by that are very similar to the samurai’s bushido, and if you’re not striving for that admirable way of life… something seems to be wrong with you:
The way of the ninja in Naruto.
Saiyan Culture’s emphasis on pride, honor, strength, and honesty.
And even in shōjo manga like Mermaid Melody and Special A, there is a camaraderie between our main characters that is so strong, any outside force cannot defeat it. You see these stories do not have to revolve around intense, dramatic plots entrenched in suspense and guided by their twists and turns. The characters set in a village ravaged by demons are quite the same as characters trying to survive high school. They are inspired by their peers; peers who neglect them, hate them, terrorize them, love them… they want to grow and become stronger because of their peers.
There is a constant theme in anime about weakness and how weakness is looked down upon, but not in the overtly-masculine way that you may think. It is not that weakness itself is shameful, but that one’s inability to protect their loved ones is shameful. Characters are often tormented by their guilt for feeling like deadweight, like an anchor, being incapable of protecting their best friends and their families. So they are motivated by their pain, their rivals, their nakama all in order to evolve and grow into someone stronger – and a character’s strength is measured by how well they can protect other’s.
What an incredible notion. Measuring strength based on your selflessness and your ability to love.
If I have to lose friends because they do not understand nakama… because they find weakness in it, they’re missing out on a tool that builds up only the toughest and the bravest. It hurts, but it must be endured and it must be accepted by people like myself. Those friends I will lose are luckily few, and are not guided by the same light that guides the characters I’ve admired since my childhood. And people like that cannot inspire themselves, nor will they be able to inspire others.
I am an endless fire lit in perpetuity by the sensation of my nakama, and I will continue to be fueled by this heat, inspired by every day and every night, because I have people I care for and people to live for. My ability to love can break the bank – and I can thank my evil, big brother for that.

Send me an AU and I’ll give you 5+ headcanons about it
Alright alright, I live! So, @bluebeirry asked for Broly x Trunks, DBZ/Game of Thrones cross-over. I’m using both of the optional bonuses of Saiyans retain their powers and are literal dragon/human hybrids. Fair warning, I’m not too current on Game of Thrones so Google has very much been a friend here; please forgive any mistakes.
1) It starts on an island, far out in the sea; Trunks and his mother, Bulma, live there alone. She buries herself in works of alchemy and other sciences and Trunks often assists her if he’s not out foraging or training. Vegeta visits about once a month or so, bringing with him supplies and on occasion, news from the mainland. Sometimes he has letters for Bulma, from her work acquaintances or her family, where ever they are. Vegeta refuses to let them leave and neither of his parents will tell Trunks why, which becomes a constant source of frustration for him. His father’s constant refusal to recognize him, to mock him over interacting with him, is another source of frustrated anger. It will be years before Trunks understands that this is his father’s show of love for him; keeping Trunks and his mother safe and distant from possible harm even at the cost of a real relationship between them and Vegeta himself.
Trunks does not know it, but Saiyans are few in number; their race had dwindled with the seeming disappearance of magic from the world. It does not help that Saiyans, half-human and half-dragon, were hard to breed to begin with, to the point that it was commonly accepted belief that a Saiyan could only reproduce with another Saiyan. A half-Saiyan like Trunks is not supposed to exist, there have been no records of someone like him before, but Bulma had an unexpected thread of magic in her blood and perhaps that is what allowed the pregnancy to happen, but they simply do not know and Vegeta was worried about what could happen to his mate and child should this knowledge become public. They do not know of Goku, the lost Saiyan child that lives now deep in the forested mountains with his own little family.
So Vegeta hid Bulma and Trunks to keep them safe, from both the world at large as well as from other Saiyans.
2) But with the hatching of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons, magic has seemingly returned and with it, the strength of the Saiyans. Now that the Saiyans are stronger, they are trying to rebuild their tribe and Vegeta, under pressure as the Prince, has to produce an heir. He does not want to reveal Trunks or Bulma but he finally has to; Saiyans mate for life and he will not and can not betray Bulma to take another, even for disguise.
So he admits to his father, King Vegeta, about his little family and is made to bring them home to the tribe. They are presented and while the ceremonies are completed to accept them in, it’s clear that Bulma and Trunks are still largely outsiders to the tribe. Bulma is human after all, even if she is wickedly intelligent and capable of producing unique creations of great benefit, and Trunks is, well, half-Saiyan, which many of the tribe take to mean he is weaker and therefore unworthy. He also doesn’t have a tail, another mark of shame against him that he does not deserve.
3) This is how he meets Broly, as one outsider drifting to another. Broly is odd for a Saiyan, being rather meek and strangely apathetic in nature. The other Saiyans ignore Broly as thoroughly as they reject Trunks, viewing Broly as a worthless coward since he can not fight. It is through their forming friendship that Trunks finally learns more about proper Saiyan culture and therefore all the supposed ways that he and his mother lack, even when they physically cannot help it. Annoyed, Trunks tries to ‘fix’ what he can but it never seems to be enough, no matter what. Eventually Trunks finds himself spending more and more time with Broly and they settle into a comfortable routine.
After some years of this, Prince Vegeta is not surprised when Broly approaches him for permission to court Trunks. He grants it easily, figuring they fit well enough together. Besides, Saiyan courting is intricate and spans years; more than enough time for the two to figure out if they truly want to be together or not.
4) Broly and Trunks disappear the same day they announce their courtship; while this is not unusual, something about it doesn’t feel right. The source of the feeling comes to light when Bulma discovers a threatening letter in her lab, alongside the fact that several of her inventions and concoctions are missing.
Paragus and some other like minded Saiyans are performing a coup. The world is changing after all, the Saiyans are growing ever stronger with the re-emergence of magic in the world and they want their presence to be known again, known and feared as it had once been. And while they swear no allegiance to any Houses, not even House Targaryen, the Saiyans *do* acknowledge the line of Vegeta as the strongest of their tribe. But with the appearance of Bulma and Trunks, other Saiyans had started to doubt the power of the line of Vegeta, especially as King Vegeta refused to allow them to rampage as they wished in the world as they had once done in times long past.
And that is the meat of the letter’s threat: that the line of Vegeta has grown weak and soft and it is time for a new blood-line to rule the tribe, Paragus’ line specifically. The sticking point of the threat is Trunks; Paragus has a blood mage in his group, gained through his personal network of connections, and he makes it clear in the letter that the boy will be used against his father and grandfather if the demands of the letter are not met.
5) Prince Vegeta’s rage is so great he activates a rare state: Super Saiyan. Bulma uses her intelligence to help him figure out where the group is hiding and he flies out there, leaving her behind to her great protest. Some other Saiyans fly out with him, some still loyal to his line, others in awe of his display of new-found power. They find the camp where Bulma said it would be and they descend upon it to attack. But to their shock, Broly flies out to meet them, in his own enraged state of Legendary Super Saiyan.
The battle is long and hard and costly; it finally ends when Paragus appears, arrogant and sure of himself. He has their prized hostage with him, though Trunks is unconscious and heavily restrained. Paragus calls Broly back, using the specially enchanted hand ring connected to the control crown Broly now wears and makes him stand guard over Trunks while Paragus gloats at Vegeta.
6) His mistake was turning his back on his son, ignoring Broly while Paragus rained threats down on Vegeta, describing the various tortures that blood magic could inflict to try and force him to give in and hand over control of the tribe to Paragus. Broly’s love and affection for Trunks had been genuine; Paragus had just seen an opportunity and taken it to further his plans. Hearing all of the pain and torture that Paragus is willing to inflict on Trunks just to get to King and Prince Vegeta, something snaps in Broly and his anger amplifies to the point that he breaks free of the control crown and kills his father.
But it causes an unexpected tragedy: Paragus had had his blood mage underling create a link between Trunks and himself; so that if Paragus died, Trunks would as well, assumingly ending the line of Vegeta as it’s rare for a Saiyan to have more than one child. Seeing Trunks die before him snaps something else in Broly and he...just collapses, all his power disappearing as if it never existed to begin with.
7) Saiyans burn their dead to honor them; Trunks’ funeral is held accordingly to his status as a Prince, even if it wasn’t fully recognized in life. When Prince Vegeta later finds Broly’s body, the broken Saiyan having committed suicide by ingesting poison, he privately burns him as well and says a quiet prayer for their happiness in the afterlife.
