Commonplace Entry 13: Jonathan Swift's The Lady's Dressing Room

Jonathan Swift's poem detailed, "Whereof, to make the matter clear, an inventory follows here... a dirty smock...various combs...a forehead cloth...alum flour...night-gloves...gallipots and vials...ointments...paints and slops...towels...petticoats...a handkerchief...stockings...quaff pins...tweezers...a magnifying glass...a reeking chest" (636-639).

In step with 18th century Restoration ideology, Swift's poem takes on a nearly taxonomical approach to the itemization of women's accoutrements and hygienic tools the narrator encounters. It bluntly showcases the "women problem" and demonstrates the otherness of women is society at this time. It dabbles into the realm of the natural world, by itemizing all those things which seem unnatural to make women beautiful or more appealing.

From the Archives: Simple Simon Greets His Fair Lady

Beloved British comedian Norman Wisdom visits Julie Andrews backstage in her dressing room during her celebrated run in My Fair Lady at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in April 1956, barely a month after the show had opened to great acclaim.

The visit was particularly poignant, as the two stars had shared the stage just three years earlier in the 1953 Christmas pantomime Aladdin at the Coventry Hippodrome. Julie delighted audiences in the principal girl role of Princess Bettina, while Norman brought his signature humour to the comic part of Simple Simon.

Wisdom was in the United States to discuss plans for a proposed motion picture, An Englishman in Las Vegas, which ultimately never came to fruition. Accompanied by Harry Secombe (sadly not pictured) and Secombe’s wife, Wisdom made time to reconnect with his former co-star. "She gave us the best cup of tea on the whole of Broadway," he said (Irving 1956, p. 6). Sources

With the release of From The Rehearsal Room - Tokyo to Ramin's youtube I finally, finally, continue and finish this side project I'm doing.

Initially, I used AI to mastered it because the first version I got from bilibili were not in good quality but I wasn't satisfied and I found the much better quality. But with Ramin uploaded it to youtube, I re did all the mastering just with audacity for both Part 1 and Part 2. The Part 2 is still from the better version I found from bilibili, by the way.

What you need to do is just download the file and put it on your music player. The metadata is all completed as if it's whole legit album. Enjoy, guys!!

And I'm being weird so all the lyrics that are put there are from my listening although I still use what I found online but I still listened and compared. They made few ad-libs and changes and I notice because for the songs that I wasn't familiar, the lyric that I found online and what they sang was slightly different. Perhaps they sing the newer version of the lyrics or mistakes? Even each Sheytoons songs they sing one in both parts differ from the ones I found online.

It's 1AM now and I just realized I wore the 唯一 necklace with the palm trees dress I reserved for New Year's Eve—so, basically, a NuengPalm themed outfit 😆

I picked up more speech patterns in 4th grade french then actual french

#I've mentioned her before but my 4th grade french teacher was this 70 year old lady with dyed black hair who dressed kinda goth #and walked around with an umbrella in the sun #at my school french was the only class you moved rooms for and it was in a portable outside #so we'd all file out through the canadian winter to go to the french room and it ALWAYS smelled like cupcakes from her perfume #we'd learn how to write cheques in french and she'd play a french learning cover of YMCA where instead of YMCA it was “je suis dix ans”#and she had like 7 cats and dogs she called her meow meows and woof woofs #and all the kids thought that was super weird and were scared of her but I thought she was awesome #still didn't learn shit but I call fictional characters my woof woofs now #I googled her and she isn't dead so if I ever see her again-
