there’s probably a total of like 2 followers with an aviation hyperfixation here but i’m realizing how weirdly parallel managing anxiety is to IFR flying hear me out
for those who aren’t aware, when you start training as a pilot you learn how to control your aircraft using VFR (visual flight rules). This is visual flying and you have use of the horizon or whatever visual cues are outside to keep your plane up, and it’s all pretty simple and intuitive to stay level.
IFR stands for instrument flight rules and it is CONSIDERABLY more challenging, because IFR flying is relying purely on the plane’s onboard instruments to visualize your position. but what makes the switch to IFR so fucking difficult is that without any visual cues to orient yourself in space, your body begins lying to you. countless underprepared pilots lose their lives in Instrument Meteorological Conditions because sensory illusions in the inner ear can literally make you feel like you’re flying level when you’re actually in a descent to the ground (this is what happened to Kobe’s flight, it’s such a phenomenon that it’s been dubbed the graveyard spiral)
Basically, pilots who can fly IFR have literally spent hours upon hours retraining their gut to ignore those bodily signals and to only trust the plane. And in that way i think it’s similar to anxiety training. When you’re extremely anxious you can’t trust your body, your gut lies you, your head is its own IMC zone. And you have to diligently retrain your rational mind to override those nonsensical stress signals being sent lest you succumb to your own hyperbolic graveyard spiral in your brain. it’s very hard, but i think the fact that humans can retrain their minds to dismiss something as basal and hardwired as our sense of balance proves just how strong we can be at overriding bullshit beliefs our body feeds to us!

I don't know if this has been asked and answered but with your love of Top Gun and airplanes, would you ever consider getting your pilot's license?
it is my retirement plan 🤞🏽 god willing i make enough money to learn how to fly someday
im currently a broke student with no access to any accessible airstrip within like 20 miles (i live in nyc & don’t have a car) and also every time i mention getting my pilot’s license to my mom she has a conniption about safety “what happens if my baby falls out of the sky” etc. so i have to wait for her to die first
but yes I would love love love to have that opportunity at some point. If only to make my writing about flight more accurate (obviously if you know anything about flying my fics are the most inaccurate things in the whole world & i apologize for that). Im a big proponent of “doing stuff just to know how to write about it” which is the only reason, for instance, I have ever smoked a cigarette (not that my writing about that is particularly accurate either but)

Having barely watched the show…I feel weird that I think it is fully understandable that two young dragon riders would lose control of one: Luc’s dragon, a young, and frightened creature never seen combat and two: vhagar a behemoth as old as the Targaryen bloodline that has fought in every war that was already being pushed on by her riders rage.
Do you seriously not think something like this could happen? Even Drogon didn’t do what Dany wanted for a lengthy chunk of time.
People are pointing at Meleys, her rider has been bonded with her for *decades*, of course Rhaenys had better control of her Mount.
