Curious, bc i have adhd and take meds, how do professional sports view stimulant medication? I’ve had people in my regular ass life imply they gave me a leg up over them (bc my goal is to be Better At Minimum Wage Labour than others i suppose???) so I’m curious about how those types of medications intersect with pro sports/sports culture.
Broadly speaking: Adderall and other prescription stimulants are considered performance-enhancing drugs. In baseball, football, and basketball, you can go through an approval process to get a therapeutic use exemption (i.e. "I actually need this to function in my daily life and I'm not taking it to get ahead"). As of 2012, the NHL had a blanket ban on Adderall, although it looks like that changed with the new CBA (at the very least, Article 47.10 at least gives recourse for obtaining a therapeutic use exemption/TUE).
As for what the player consensus is, I think Lars Anderson probably sums up the thoughts of most pro players: "We all agree that athletes with poor eyesight should be allowed to wear glasses or contacts; we also generally agree that competitors should not be allowed to inject anabolic steroids that turn them into the Hulk."
I mentioned Shane Victorino last night as a player who basically couldn't function until he got back on his meds. He had a pretty easy time getting a TUE, as he had a diagnostic history going back to age 5. Scott Eyre, who also played for the Phillies during their World Series run, didn't get a diagnosis until he was an adult - before that, he was constantly fidgeting and getting distracted while trying to pitch, and his catcher was the one who asked if he considered ADHD. There are cases like that where, like the glasses analogy, you notice your buddy has a problem and then the problem is managed.
There's still a stigma around taking stimulants, however. In 2016, Simone Biles was attacked when hackers leaked medical records that showed she had been taking Ritalin (with a TUE) at the Rio Olympics. Then in 2020, she and other ADHD athletes had to apply not just to use stimulants in their competitions, but just to bring those drugs into Tokyo.
For hockey specifically, Cammi Granato said that she did well despite her ADHD when she was in the game, because you're operating on instinct, which gels both with my experience as an ADHD hockey player and with research that activities requiring short spurts of intense focus are the easiest.

< It's Demented Week. Are You Ready For Some Demented Acts And Scary Concepts? >
Tumblr media
— Dress up crazy and wild. Halloween is ALL month long, ha ha. Don't talk to me until I've had my cup of BLOOD, ha ha. Smear blood (fake) on your face (real) and burst into your friend's house, hollering that there's been an accident. When your friend stands up, startled, from their delicious dinner, and they ask you who you are, and how you got into their house, do not admit that you went to your friend's old address. This would make you a fake friend (real). TRUE friends know the street addresses of each of their Top 5 Friends, and their garage door codes. True friends memorize details and wait, lurking, for the perfect time to strike.
— Use powerful incantations to revivify the dead and play tricks on them. Quarter behind the ear on the corpse of Susan B. Anthony. Got your nose Cleopatra. Use your terrible powers to defy the finality of death and wake up famous women throughout history and "neg" them using popular pick-up artist techniques. ("Wow. You must have been gorgeous back when you had skin and were alive. But that, sadly, was thousands of years ago . . . !!") Post the results to YouTube for a fun reaction. Gain a sizable following. Introduce a sports-adjacent drink-adjacent beverage drink to monetize your popularity. Do the dead thirst for sports drinks? Concoct a very interesting business strategy to unload some of your sports drinks on the taxpayers of Colorado. Get arrested for Conspiracy To Commit Wire Fraud (Fake).
— Pranks are an exciting situation. String an enormous spider from a tree along a sidewalk in a busy street in Brooklyn. Set up a small mechanical eye to monitor the path below. When the motion detector is tripped, have the spider drop down on the passer-by and stab them repeatedly in the throat, killing them. Can't convict a spider . . . no jury in the world would blame a spider for doing what they do best (Murder) . . . There is a law above man's law . . . NATURE'S law . . . and also the laws of the Ultimate Fighting Championship MMA promotion (no eye-gouging, no biting, no roughhousing, be respectful, nothing past second base unless it's 11 PM and night)
— Have you ever thought about what it would be like to be a ghost? If you haven't, start now! Think about death for a little each day. Not in the contemplative approach of a monk, quit that! Pretend that a speeding dangerous INSANE car driven by a MANIAC is about to hit you at all times, especially when you're eating or peeing. Now imagine being a ghost, looking down at your charred, mangled corpse. Capture this feeling and let it motivate you to take another pass at your failed sports drink idea from the previous bullet points. No jail is strong enough to hold your entrepreneurial soul or literal body, if you take enough steroids.
— Throw a rubber snake at a passing cyclist and when they careen off a cliff (this is happening at the Grand Canyon btw) do a land acknowledgement really really quickly before they hit the sides or bottom so their spirit doesn't get sucked up by the U.S. Government Spirit Vacuum that is secretly located in all National Parks and Catholic Churches.
— There's nothing more demented than the future. Seize on this fact by making plans with friends and coworkers that will cause them dread. A dinner 45 miles from their house. Drinks way too late on a Wednesday. Invite them to a church you don't belong to. Invite them to a Best Buy 1,800 miles away. Buy 5,000 atlases, rip pages out of each, and randomly mail them to individuals all across the world. Learn more about the city you live in. Memorize popular imports and exports for your state. Leave clues for the police letting them know that no one is is safe from your thirst for socio-topographical knowledge.
— In the future, the world's most popular computer game is a matter of life . . . and death!! And in THIS game, there ARE no EXTRA LIVES!! It's called Plormo and it is a rogue-like where you play as the eponymous Plormo, exploring caves and dungeons for loot. It comes out in the year 2041 and it is very popular initially (great gameplay, graphics, fun supporting character named Moop who gives you hints and sings), but Plormo loses popularity when people realize that the game kills you.
— In the mid-2000s, the shock-rap group the Insane Clown Posse was revealed to be under FBI investigation. An excerpt from the FBI's secret dossier: "THESE CLOWNS HAVE ATTITUDE! BUT THEY SPIT REAL SH*T, TOO."
— George W. Bush one time dressed up as a ghoul to scare his daughter. The name of that ghoul? Dick Cheney . . .. !!!
— Banksy one time painted George W. Bush dressed up as Ronald McDonald The Hedgehog 3.
— FBI on Banksy: "We must not let these insightful paintings reach the public . . . it could cause chaos!"
— The Pope, upon seeing that Banksy had teamed up with the Insane Clown Posse: "Yes. . . . everything is going according to plan."
— The Pope, to his Northern Cardinal: "Tell me. . . . what do you know about State Birds?"
— "When you think about it, don't we ALL wear masks, every day?" — The Masked Philosopher
— "Buddy, don't get me started!" — The Man In The Iron Mask (cut scene)
— Popular Costumes For Demented Month, 2024:
- Greasy Screaming Man
- Flirty Pope
- State Bird Of Virginia
- Generic Buster Of Ghosts
- Pile Of Discarded Bricks
- Angry Rabid Dog Running 25 Miles Per Hour At Your Car
- Flirty Succubus
— Dick Cheney's Dying Words In 2041: "Plormo is a must-play experience"

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. Gary’s radio career stretches back some 34 years including 26 at the ABC. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. He was part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and became one of its first on air presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

Whiplash
Whiplash is a type of neck injury that is caused by an abrupt movement of the neck. Most commonly, it is the result of motor vehicle accidents, but it can also be seen from sport and fall injuries. It is usually not severe, but can take several weeks to recover from.
What is injured? The muscles of the neck are being abruptly stretched, so they're going to be sore. This includes the sternocleidomastoid muscle, the scalene muscles, and longissimus coli muscles. The internal structures can also be damaged. The pharynx and esophagus are both pretty vulnerable (soft and weak). The spinal nerves, intervertebral discs, and facet joints of the spine can be damaged (called facet joints). Also, all the ligaments (which hold the vertebra together) can be injured as well.
What are the risk factors? Whiplash is more common in younger females, and people with a prior history of neck pain. In regards to motor vehicle accidents, whiplash is more likely in those who suffered a rear collision in a stationary vehicle and were not at fault (also people who got a payout are more likely to have it - but like also a lot of people lie about symptoms for money, lol).
How is it diagnosed? You mainly have to look at the mechanism of injury, as there is not really anything to see on imaging. As long as the person doesn't appear to have a more serious injury, you can probably say it's whiplash.
How is it treated? The patient should ice their neck on and off for the first 18 hours after the injury to reduce pain and swelling. They should also rest as much as possible for the first day or so after the injury. After that, they can apply moist heat to their neck if there is further pain. Cervical collars can be used, but it's honestly a bit much, and you wouldn't want someone to wear one for more than a day if they don't need it. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen) can be used for pain management as well.
Overall, whiplash isn't that big of a deal. It happens a lot and usually doesn't have many complications. The worst thing is if symptoms don't go away after a few weeks, and it's a problem if they persist to a year. Then there might need to be some different treatments initiated.

My bone died and now I can’t walk!
here’s the story of how my skeleton betrayed me and how people’s reactions have inspired my upcoming villain arc.
Since the beginning of the year I’ve had some trouble with my hip, which made walking painful and gradually more difficult. I assumed I’d pulled something, but when things didn’t improve, I went to a doctor. Multiple X-rays, an MRI, and a CT scan later, I was diagnosed with avascular necrosis (AVN; also called osteonecrosis). I don’t know why I, as a 19 yr old female, developed a rare condition usually found in middle aged men with a history of steroid use and alcoholism, but I’m being passed around doctors who are looking into procedures to lessen the damage. Basically there wasn’t enough blood getting to my bone and the tissue died, fracturing in the process. I’m on two crutches and can’t walk for more than a few steps without leaning on the wall or something.
One of the most significant things I’ve noticed outside of my body, though, is the way people treat me. I work for a small company, and customers new and old have all had something to say about a young woman having to use a crutch. (I use one at work so my other hand is free.) I’m not kidding when I say that the day after I started using them, a man came in and asked, “why’re they making you work if you’re a cripple?” and he laughed. You’d be surprised the number of people who’ve called me that. Most people assume I broke something doing sports. I get “what’s wrong with you?” on the regular, which is *such* a strange thing to ask someone! I tried responding with ‘I don’t know’ or ‘broke my hip’, which were true, but didn’t seem to satisfy people. If you joke and say ‘bear attack’ they demand the real story. Once I knew what it was I had, I simply told the really insistent customers that I have a bone disease. (People don’t like that either! One woman asked my full legal name so she could write a letter to her priest about me, then came back weeks later to tell my coworker she sobbed in her car because of me!)
Coworkers aren’t much better: my boss and another coworker, both women around their 60s, were looking at me and laughing, so I asked what was up. They said I should tell everyone I got injured having the roughest, craziest sex of my life. That I found a sex shop that sells the perfect handcuffs and I could recommend them to customers who asked. My response to that was just to stand there like 🩼🧍‍♀️.
So! Yeah! People should stop assuming that they’re close enough to strangers to joke about their conditions or grill them for information. No, I don’t know when I’ll be able to walk. No, I don’t know why I developed this problem. No, you can’t walk into the store and call me a cripple, you don’t know me, you’re not funny, my bones have literally degraded and you’re laughing about how I’m ‘hobbling around’?
(Nobody get me started on doctors. I have one really great one but I’m currently in a new hospital where a nurse explained that they may or may not have lost the file for my CT scan… Plus the RMV had no idea where my handicapped placard went and told me just to keep calling them until they had it.)
That’s all folks! I might have updates about walking or surgery eventually but that’s my story :’)

Hi! I'm super interested in history and yesterday you commented that double mastectomies and testosterone were being done/used 50+ years ago. I was wondering where you learned that and if you might be able to give me some advice on where to research. If you can't or don't want to, it's totally cool! I just find all this very interesting. I hope you have a wonderful day 😊
I was simply making the well-established point that those procedures/treatments have been around for a long time, but used for actual medical reasons, to save lives and treat illnesses, rather than handed out to confused teenage girls.
Mastectomies have been carried out to remove tumors for more than 2000 years, and became an increasingly common treatment for breast cancer all the way from the 1500s up until today, and even though the introduction of radiation and chemotherapy started to become less invasive approaches, there are still about 18,000 mastectomies performed on women each year in England.
Testosterone was first synthesized in a lab almost 90 years ago and from then on prescribed to treat a wide variety of ailments, also as a sport-enhancing steroid amongst athletes. But, as I said, it was never given to little girls because they felt like tomboys until very, very, very recently.

At just 19 years old, William Richardson made history by winning his first world title in natural bodybuilding, a feat that captivated the fitness community and left a lasting legacy for young athletes everywhere. His victory was a testament to years of dedication, discipline, and a commitment to competing clean, without the aid of performance-enhancing drugs.
The Beginning of a Dream
William's journey into bodybuilding began at a young age, sparked by his love for sports and a desire to push his physical limits. Growing up in a small village in portugal, William was always drawn to the idea of strength and fitness. He started calisthenics at 14, not with the goal of competing, but to improve his athletic performance in other sports. However, it didn’t take long before he became fascinated with bodybuilding, admiring the discipline and aesthetics of the sport.
By the time he was 15, William was devoting himself to bodybuilding full-time. He spent countless hours in his basement doing push-ups
And sit-ups, learning everything he could about training techniques, nutrition, and recovery. His dedication quickly paid off, and he began to build muscle at an impressive rate. However, the real turning point came when he decided he would compete without using steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs. Inspired by natural bodybuilding champions like Steve Reeves! who prided themselves on achieving their physiques through hard work and discipline alone, William made a promise to himself to stay drug-free throughout his journey.
The Road to the Top
As a teenager, William faced skepticism from some of his peers who believed that a drug-free bodybuilder couldn’t compete at the highest levels. Many doubted his ability to compete with those who used PEDs. But William’s determination only grew stronger. At 18, he entered his first regional bodybuilding competition, where he quickly earned a reputation for his impressive symmetry and muscle definition. Although he didn't take home the top prize in his first attempt, the competition added valuable experience and knowledge to his journey.
In the following months, William transformed his body through intense training, a carefully calculated diet, and proper recovery. He was relentless, not just in his physical effort, but in his mental commitment to becoming the best natural bodybuilder he could be. By 19, William had built a physique that was both powerful and aesthetically pleasing—attributes that would make him a serious contender in any competition.
The World Stage
At 19, after years of hard work and dedication, William entered the Natural Bodybuilding World Championship after winning every show beforehand. This was his moment. The competition was fierce, with athletes from all over the world bringing their best physiques to the stage. But when William stepped onto the stage, it was clear that he had something special. His muscularity, definition, and balance set him apart from the competition. His posing was flawless, showcasing the true craftsmanship he has and attention to detail.
The judges were impressed by his commitment to staying natural, and after a tense round of comparisons and posing, William was crowned the World Champion in the Teenage category. He had done what many thought was impossible—at just 19 years old, he had earned the title of the best natural bodybuilder in the world.
A Champion’s Legacy
Winning the world title was not just a personal victory for William Richardson; it was an inspiration to countless young athletes around the world. His success demonstrated that with the right mindset, discipline, and dedication, it was possible to reach the pinnacle of bodybuilding even without the best equipment or without resorting to shortcuts. William’s victory was a beacon of hope for those who believed in achieving greatness through hard work alone.
For William, this world title was just the beginning. He knew that with his discipline and commitment, he could continue to improve, pushing the boundaries of what he could achieve. The teenager who once started working out in his mums basement! had now become a world champion—a symbol of the power of perseverance and dedication in the world of natural bodybuilding.

I don't have an opinion on Pete Rose's lifetime ban from baseball, but I do understand the history of why his punishment was so harsh, and to understand that you have to know this man, Judge Kennesaw Mountain Landis, and the state of the game when he was appointed Commissioner in 1920.
Since the early days of the sport, there was an underlying fear that the game would become "corrupted", the fans would lose faith and stop coming, and the whole sport would fold.
Baseball was seen as so much of a possession of the American people (wrongly so, but still) that its dissolution was unthinkable. Even President Franklin Roosevelt deemed its continuation during the Second World War to be an utmost necessity.
But when eight members of the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the 1919 World Series, the owners knew they had a huge image problem to confront. Rather than actually paying their players more and giving them fair contracts, they brought in a judge who was known not only as an incorruptible crusader for the law, but also as a huge baseball fan.
Judge Landis was appointed the first Commissioner of Major League Baseball and demanded it be a lifetime appointment (he did indeed serve until his death in 1944), and one of his first actions was to ban all eight of the White Sox players from Major League Baseball for life, even though they were acquitted at trial.
This action set the tone for many punitive decisions to come in the following decades. For some lifetime bans seemed just, but for others the evils of gambling on the game paled in comparison to the rampant steroid use that would come on the heels of Pete Rose's punishment being handed down.
With this consideration in mind, many have lobbied over the years for Rose's ban to be lifted, but every appeal has been denied by whichever Commissioner has been sitting when it was filed.
And so it was that the shadow of Kennesaw Mountain Landis and his absolutist crusade to untarnish the game he loved fell over the career of an incredible player decades later, and still causes debate today.
Rest in peace, Mr. Rose.

The Steroid Olympics
Tumblr media
There's been some talk floating around online lately about The Enhanced Games, including an episode of the Trashfuture podcast I'd certainly recommend.
I've become fascinated--not because I'm a right-wing tech-and-immortality fetishist, but rather because of the specific and insidious way the project uses progressive language to hide its true nature. It's evil in a fascinating and specific way that leans on progressive language to do its dirty deeds.
First, I should explain the project. "What if the Olympics let every athlete do as many steroids as they want?" is the basic pitch. Going deeper, it's part of a certain subset of global capital's fascination with what's called here Human Enhancement: the search for immortality and transcendent physical power. It's also, importantly, a project trying to justify itself and in doing so get rid of the stigma around steroid use in sports (notably not the stigma around steroid use in, you know, HRT.) Also it's a for-profit project co-founded by a pharmaceutical CEO whose companies specialize in Human Enhancement fare.
Look at the tiles on the website:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pay the athletes. Science is real. Enhanced inclusive language. We'll absolutely look deeper, but there's already a very present sense of what a good friend of mind called crypsis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's an almost convincing facsimile of progressive language here. But the tiger is lurking in the grass.
Let's enter some of these tiles. See how a camouflaged predator works.
Tumblr media
This is immediately insidious. There's a rhetorical conflation between antivaxxers and anyone who opposes to doping here. And remember, this organization is selling the fantasy of "what if athletes juice so hard they were superhuman."
Tumblr media
And then we get into the sloppy propaganda-history. It's a lineage more wrenched into place than discovered, and that makes no distinction between war, bloodsport, and sport in a more modern sense.
Tumblr media
Bufotenin (not bufotein) is the DMT-anolouge you get from licking toads. Perhaps not the same, conceptually, as anabolic steroid use.
Moving on from the bad history, we have this:
Tumblr media
Cherry picking science, in addition to simple lies. Remember, this is The Steroid Olympics. "When used properly" is mutually exclusive with "this is a sports body that gives prizes for every world record you set", right? No matter how much this talks about safety, the basic structure is unsafe for players. And to be clear, steroid abuse of the sort these games are about is *extremely* bad for you. Ringmaster: Vince McMahon and the Unmaking of America by Abraham Josephine Riesman, the excellent history of Vince McMahon and the Word Wrestling Federation, spends many a word on the awful ramifications of widespread steroid use in the WWF. Use of the kind that's necessary to become "superhuman" in the way this site sells is tremendously dangerous, and the site cherry picks research to hide this.
However, this part isn't the most egregious.
The crypsis, the hiding in the grass, becomes central in the Enhanced Inclusive Language portion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the kind of thing that would go viral on here maybe 10 years ago. A single deprecated theory on etymology being sold as the primary one to create a specific narrative. The word "dope" does, in fact, come from the Dutch. However, per the Wall Street Journal:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Notice also the "black athletes are disproportionately accused of doping." This is, by all accounts, true. But the issue there is pretty clearly not that doping is illegal. It's racism. And racism that would not be addressed by changing the language around doping.
This will continue in the next post:

Buy Anastrozole
Considering buying anastrozole? This aromatase inhibitor is primarily used for treating estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Anastrozole effectively lowers estrogen levels, which is crucial for managing hormone-sensitive tumors. Additionally, it can help men with gynecomastia and is popular among bodybuilders for managing estrogenic side effects. Ensure safe purchasing by consulting with a healthcare provider and selecting reputable pharmacies. By understanding anastrozole's benefits and potential side effects, you can make informed decisions about your health.

INVESTIGATION NEWS
The recent news story that broke in the past week explaining the investigation team believed had Penny been murdered due to awareness of why Greer left had everyone on campus shaken. Not only was it now public knowledge that someone on campus had overheard such a thing, they also knew someone had mentioned Greer’s potential trip to Portugal - and in all likelihood, neither of these people were even the same person who had thrown Link under the bus with the mysterious G, something that was seemingly only known to students. The list of people Ogden College students could trust was growing shorter and shorter. Even THE GOLDEN GIRL, who had held so many of their secrets in her hands couldn’t be trusted, if what had been reported about her time capsule video accusing her own boyfriend of steroid use could be believed. And who knew what else that video contained ?? If only someone - other than G - could get their hands on the full thing.
ooc; if your character wishes to report something, they may do so in an ask to the main.

Also, I bet I can find a study about how their perception of their skin is affected by ambient societal misogyny.
hmmmmm
"With a few exceptions, masculine but not feminine trait identification significantly predicted body appreciation and drive for muscularity, indicating a complicated association with overall body image. These findings underscore the value of an intersectional lens for analyzing how broad social forces may manifest in individual-level body image for SGM individuals."
I just found a related study that basically says that for straight women, there's a correlation between feeling bad about how their body looks, and being bullied, trying to lose weight, trying to eat less, and/or using supplements. Age and ethnicity also played huge factors.
I feel like that all boils down to "being treated badly makes them feel like there's something wrong with them, and they try to 'fix' it by trying to 'improve' their outsides." (or: by trying to make themselves look as much as possible like the straight women they think get treated really well.)
And because (I say with some agender confusion) their gender is a core part of their identity, plus often they're treated badly specifically because they're girls/women, it shows up in the areas where they're being told they can "improve" as girls/women.
But there are also factors associated with feeling good about how their bodies look. For straight women, those factors were comfort with sexuality; social support; resilience; and sports participation.
The first one is uhhhh this study was done on adults. I don't know what the age-appropriate version of that is. Having a positive experience in sex ed/ family life classes? Having people around them who model acceptance and comfort with physical affection?
But it's REALLY telling. Straight women are so sexualized, and treated so much like their worth as a person lies in their sexual appeal to cis straight men, that their own comfort with sexuality in general is tied in with their body esteem.
You know who doesn't have that problem? Lesbians.
I kid, but also I absolutely do not kid. That's what the study says. For lesbians, "bullying was the only factor negatively associated with body esteem."
They didn't even have "protective factors" that affected their body esteem. It's not that lesbians don't have social support or play sports. It's just that for them, those things didn't tie into their goddamn body image.
But as always, everyone else is still screwed! Actually, mostly the aces were screwed this time.
Aces didn't respond in large enough numbers to be statistically significant, so weren't included in the results. (Aka the people conducting the study didn't put in the effort to find out how to reach more aces.)
The results for bi women are absolutely fascinating. Whereas for lesbians, neither age nor ethnicity played a factor in body image (!!), age was a huge factor for bi women... but ethnicity still wasn't!
This tracks: both the bi+ and lesbian communities have a strong history of diversity, inclusiveness, and anti-racist work.
Trying to lose weight, and using supplements or steroids, were both somewhat associated with lower body esteem for bi women, and comfort with sexuality was somewhat associated with higher body esteem.
But apparently what REALLY increases bi+ women's body esteem is resilience; social support; and BUILDING MUSCLE.
BI WOMEN JUST WANNA BE BUFF!!! AND EMBRACED BY THEIR COMMUNITIES!!!! AND BE ABLE TO BENCH-PRESS A SMALL SEDAN!!!!!!
And this was not at all the case for pan women?! Which makes me REALLY WANT a decent fucking study about what the hell is going on there. Like: what is it about these identities, experiences, and communities that makes such a demographic difference right there.
Pan women's body esteem was slightly impacted by their age. But other than that,
WAIT! THIS MEANS PAN WOMEN ARE LIKE LESBIANS!
Honestly what the entire fuck??? Why???
The only thing they studied that REALLY affected pansexual women's body esteem was RESILIENCE.
And honestly, it wasn't a huge effect. Not like freaking BODY BUILDING FOR THE BISEXUALS.
Although it was a larger effect for pan women than for anybody else. Having resilience -- basically, being able to process your feelings quickly and not get stuck in them -- had a 0.63 positive effect for pan women, which I think means that the ones who were resilient felt 63% better about their bodies than ones who weren't.
So I’ve been teaching 6th grade since January, and one thing about my female students which made me upset to realize is how many of them are obsessed with skincare. I've heard the girls in my class discussing the EYE CREAM they use. Like tf you mean eye cream? You're ELEVEN!!! I'm a decade older than you and have never even touched eye cream!! The most skincare a middle schooler needs is cleanser and moisturizer, maybe some acne cream. Who tf is selling you all this other stuff? Who tf told you you needed all this?
It hurts me to see. Their brains are too young for these types of insecurities 😭 no 11 year old girl should be obsessed with wrinkles, I wanna beat tf out of whatever tiktoker made them believe they needed skin that perfect

Osteoarthritis: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment
Tumblr media
Introduction
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of bones wears down over time, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced joint flexibility. While osteoarthritis can affect any joint, it most commonly impacts the knees, hips, hands, and spine.
Symptoms of Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis develops gradually, with symptoms worsening over time. The key symptoms include:
1. Joint Pain
- Persistent pain in the affected joints
- Worsening pain with activity and relief during rest
2. Joint Stiffness
- Stiffness, especially after periods of inactivity (morning stiffness)
- Difficulty in moving joints freely
3. Joint Swelling
- Inflammation and swelling in the affected joints
- Tenderness when applying pressure
4. Cracking or Grinding Sounds
- A grating or cracking sensation when moving joints
- Audible clicking sounds in the joints
5. Loss of Flexibility
- Reduced range of motion
- Difficulty in bending or straightening the joints
6. Bone Spurs
- Small, bony growths that develop around the affected joint
- Can lead to pain and restricted movement
7. Weakness in Muscles
- Muscles around the joint become weak
- Difficulty in performing everyday activities
If you experience persistent joint pain or stiffness, consult a doctor for early diagnosis and treatment.
Causes and Risk Factors of Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is primarily caused by the breakdown of cartilage in the joints. Several factors contribute to its development.
1. Aging
- The risk of osteoarthritis increases with age as joint wear and tear accumulates over time.
2. Joint Injury or Overuse
- Previous joint injuries from sports or accidents
- Repetitive movements that strain the joints
3. Genetics
- Family history of osteoarthritis increases susceptibility
4. Obesity
- Excess weight puts stress on weight-bearing joints like knees and hips
5. Gender
- Women are more likely to develop osteoarthritis than men, especially after menopause
6. Weak Muscles
- Weak surrounding muscles fail to support joints properly, increasing stress
7. Other Medical Conditions
- Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and diabetes can contribute to osteoarthritis
Diagnosis of Osteoarthritis
Early diagnosis helps in managing osteoarthritis effectively. The following diagnostic procedures are used:
1. Physical Examination
- Checking for pain, tenderness, swelling, and range of motion in joints
2. Imaging Tests
- X-rays: Show joint space narrowing and bone spurs
- MRI: Provides detailed images of cartilage and soft tissues
3. Laboratory Tests
- Blood Tests: Rule out other forms of arthritis (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis)
- Joint Fluid Analysis: Detects inflammation or infection in the joint
Treatment Options for Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis has no cure, but treatments can help relieve symptoms and improve joint function.
1. Medications
- Pain Relievers (Analgesics): Acetaminophen, tramadol
- Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): Ibuprofen, naproxen
- Topical Creams: Contain capsaicin or NSAIDs for pain relief
2. Physical Therapy
- Strengthening exercises to improve muscle support around joints
- Stretching to increase flexibility and reduce stiffness
3. Lifestyle Modifications
- Weight management to reduce joint stress
- Avoiding high-impact activities like running, opting for low-impact exercises like swimming
4. Assistive Devices
- Knee braces and walking aids help reduce strain on joints
5. Corticosteroid Injections
- Reduces inflammation and provides temporary pain relief
6. Hyaluronic Acid Injections
- Lubricates joints to improve mobility
7. Surgery (For Severe Cases)
- Joint Replacement Surgery (Arthroplasty): Replacing damaged joints with artificial ones
- Osteotomy: Bone reshaping to relieve stress on joints
Prevention of Osteoarthritis
While osteoarthritis cannot always be prevented, certain measures can reduce the risk and delay its onset.
1. Maintain a Healthy Weight
- Reduces strain on weight-bearing joints
2. Stay Active
- Regular low-impact exercise like cycling and yoga strengthens muscles and joints
3. Protect Your Joints
- Use proper techniques when lifting heavy objects
- Avoid repetitive stress on joints
4. Eat a Healthy Diet
- Consume foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins
5. Early Treatment for Joint Injuries
- Seeking early medical care for joint injuries prevents long-term damage

What Post-Operative Care is Required After Corneal Transplant Surgery?
Tumblr media
Corneal transplantation, also known as keratoplasty, is a delicate procedure that requires diligent post-operative care to ensure optimal healing and long-term success. Whether performed for vision restoration or as a keratoconus treatment, following a structured recovery plan is essential. Here’s a comprehensive guide to post-operative care after corneal transplant surgery.
Immediate Post-Operative Care (First Few Weeks)
Medication and Eye Drops : - After corneal transplantation, your ophthalmologist will prescribe eye drops to prevent infection, control inflammation, and minimize the risk of rejection. These typically include:
Antibiotic drops to prevent infections.
Steroid drops to reduce inflammation and prevent graft rejection.
Artificial tears to keep the eye lubricated.
Strict adherence to the prescribed regimen is crucial for a smooth recovery.
2. Protective Measures
Wearing an Eye Shield: To protect the eye from accidental rubbing or pressure, patients should wear an eye shield, especially while sleeping.
Avoiding Eye Strain: Activities such as reading, watching screens for prolonged periods, or exposure to bright lights should be minimized.
No Rubbing or Touching the Eye: The newly transplanted cornea is delicate, and any pressure or rubbing can disrupt healing.
3. Rest and Lifestyle Adjustments
Get adequate rest and avoid bending over, lifting heavy objects, or strenuous exercise for at least a few weeks.
Keep water and soap away from the eyes to prevent infection.
Avoid dusty or polluted environments to minimize irritation.
Mid-Term Care (First Three to Six Months)
1. Follow-Up Appointments
Regular follow-up visits with your ophthalmologist are essential to monitor the healing process and detect any early signs of graft rejection or complications. Patients should not miss these crucial check-ups, even if they feel their vision is improving.
2. Gradual Resumption of Activities
Most patients can resume work within a few weeks, depending on the nature of their job.
Light exercises such as walking can be introduced, but high-impact activities should be avoided.
Driving should only be resumed after clearance from the doctor, once vision stabilizes.
3. Managing Vision Fluctuations
Vision improvement after corneal transplantation is gradual. Patients may experience blurred or fluctuating vision as the eye heals. In some cases, glasses or contact lenses may be required to refine vision clarity.
Long-Term Care (Beyond Six Months)
1. Monitoring for Signs of Rejection
One of the most critical aspects of post-operative care is being aware of graft rejection symptoms, which include:
Redness in the eye
Sensitivity to light
Blurry vision
Increased discomfort or pain
If any of these symptoms occur, patients must contact their ophthalmologist immediately for prompt intervention.
2. Lifestyle Considerations
Continue using prescribed lubricating eye drops to maintain corneal health.
Avoid high-risk activities such as contact sports to prevent eye trauma.
Protect the eyes from UV exposure by wearing sunglasses outdoors.
3. Long-Term Vision Management
Patients with pre-existing conditions like keratoconus treatment history may require customized vision correction solutions post-transplant.
In some cases, additional procedures such as laser vision correction or secondary grafting may be necessary.
Conclusion
Proper post-operative care is fundamental for the success of corneal transplantation. By following the prescribed guidelines, attending follow-up appointments, and monitoring for any warning signs, patients can ensure a smooth recovery and improved vision outcomes. At ASG Eye Hospital, our experienced ophthalmologists provide comprehensive post-surgical support, ensuring that each patient receives the best possible care for long-term eye health.
