Saint Juniper’s Folly
YA paranormal mystery
follows a foster kid returning to the small town he grew up in, who runs from the judgemental townspeople and ends up magically trapped in a mysterious house in the woods
a boy who lives a boring life in the town until he finds him, and wants to figure out how to save him
and the young witch from the town over who’s heard the woods calling since her mother died, and wants to help
m/m, friendship & investigating a mystery
#Saint Juniper’s Folly#aroaessidhe 2023 reads#this is….okay#writing is quite young - it feels like middle grade. would be fine bc i like middle grade but it's a bit at odds with the fact that#they’re 18 and talking about college soon and driving round in cars a lot#There’s very little ghosty or spookiness - it’s more just about the characters and their developing relationships#I felt like there were quite a few pivotal scenes missing? Like it skips from the kid being back in this town for the first time#to suddenly he’s stuck in this house in the woods. We don’t see him go out there; realise he’s stuck; or anything.#(unless libby skipped a chapter in my audiobook again?)#It also felt like it skipped any of them like testing the supernatural stuff? They go straight to researching the house’s history.#Once the end is revealed it makes sense I guess - but it’s like the because the author forgot to make the characters (who Don’t know)#do the first logical things you might do in a situation like that. idk.#the boys hating each other at the start felt manufactured for some hate to love thing instead of for any reason.....I didn't buy it#Also my pet peeve of: having a character call her dad by his first name! …….but it's an indication of their bad relationship. okay then.#(I know that is also a real experience but MAN sometimes people just do that it's not always a sign of emotional neglect!!!!)#Anyway - I didn’t hate it by any means; there’s just a few little things that didn't work for me

i’ve been writing a fanfic about chris from free fire (which is a character who is an ira member in 1970s) whilst reading a novel about the troubles. anyway life is quite crazy and i think ireland is about the closest knit community i’ve ever seen bc i mentioned dolours price in it (one of the infamous female ira members of that time) only to find out her husband was stephen rea, an actor cillian has worked with many, many times over the years

Been on a Kate Brown kick! Plutopia is a fascinating historical juxtapose of 2 plutonium plants, Hanford in eastern Washington state, and its Cold War sister site in Myak, in the Soviet Union. Think of these two sites as fenced off company towns that were always better funded than any other proximate regional workplace with better salaries and perks like subsidized homes. Brown said in an interview with Process: A Blog for American History, that these atomic cities bought, “compliant and silent workers, people who willingly traded in their political and biological rights for consumer rights and financial security.” It’s an interesting read. Really great audiobook.
Tumblr media
Just started another book by her, Manual for Survival: A Chernobyl Guide to the Future. Through archival reconstruction, Brown posits that we still don’t understand the full health effects of Chernobyl. A hella compelling examination.

i don't have a history degree to work on anymore now that i've graduated from college but i still need to satisfy the "learning weird bits of history is fun" part of my brain so periodically i find myself doing things like reading about the time some guys in 1814 manipulated the london stock market by spreading a rumor that napoleon had died, which led to at least one conspirator fleeing the country and another one, an extremely famous officer, being expelled from the navy when it was discovered this was not true

I’ve finished my first book of 2023! On my drive back I listened to “Red Famine: Stalin’s War on Ukraine, 1921-1933” by Anne Applebaum on the famine in the Ukraine. It’s a very good read (or listen), and very enlightening on the causes, methods, and subsequent cover up of the famine. The content is, of course, quite difficult and sad, but if you like history I highly recommend checking it out.

sometimes when I listen to audiobooks I feel connected to other humans far in the past. like this was the original way stories were told, thousands of years before writing was even invented, and has continued through today. it forges this warm connection with my distant ancestors that I love.

While there's much about modern times Gylfie is unsure how to feel about or outright dislikes, audiobooks are not one of them. She loves spending her downtime listening to different books (mainly history, although she prefers nonfiction in general over any fictional genre), and has found it easier to relearn how to read while listening to it at the same time.

My favourite Spooky things to enjoy on Halloween!!
Tought I would make a little list of spooky things to read, listen and watch for the big day!:D
I am pretty varried in scary scale but I tend to stay away from jumpscare! And I will try to not recommend the classic like "Over the garden wall" (1000/10 requiered halloween watch) and the classic movies like "beetlejuice" and " Hocus Pocus" since you guys probably know them well.:) Here goes! -------------------MOVIES-----------------------------
John Carpenter " The Fog"
Tumblr media
(Classic old movie, 3.5/5 spooks, old practical horror effect, mood is 10/10 with bonus for having a lighthouse) 2. The Cat people (1942)
Tumblr media
(very old movie, and has some old tropes but great tension in some scenes and has that feeling there is a monster about to pop out at any moment without the jumpscare. 2/5 spooky)
3. The Others (2001)
Tumblr media
(SPOOKY! One of the first scary movies I watch. still get me. Love it. 5/5 spooky for someone like me.)
------------PODCAST--------------------------
13 Days of Halloween (Season 2 and 3 ESPECIALLY)
Tumblr media
(Fantastic ambiance, amazing voice actors cast. Season 2 is in a small seaside town and very Lovecraftian + lighthouse, Season 3 is countryside great depression feel. Both fantastic. 5/5 spookies)
2. Old gods of Appalachia
Tumblr media
(one of my favourite podcast. if you like the magnus archive, you will like this! one of the best narrators in the world of podcasting. 4/5 spookies)
3. Ghost Story Podcast
Tumblr media
(Not really scary but an interesting investigation into familly history and probable haunt. Just a touch spooky. 1/5) ---------------BOOKS and MANGAS----------------
The twisted ones by T. Kingfisher
Tumblr media
(Maybe because I grew up in the countryside with a house similar to that one on my street, it gets me. 5/5 spookies)
2. Even Monsters Like Fairytale
Tumblr media
(Kinda villainess manga, kinda twisted fairytale, I highly rec this one! 1/5 spookies)
3. Shadow house
Tumblr media
(I would rec reading the manga more than the anime, if only because the art get that mood even better in black and white and Somato is amazing! 3/5 spookies)
4. A guest in the house by Emily Carroll
Tumblr media
(Uncanny and such an atmostphere! Emily Carroll is, as always, a master in scary stories! 5/5 spookies!)
5. Anything by Algernon Blackwood
Tumblr media
(Old school gothic and short ghosts stories. perfect for your dark academia and victorian haunts feels! You can find a lot in free audiobook form too on youtube and spotify! 3/5 SPOOKIES) ---------------GAMES--------------
Little goody two shoes
Tumblr media
(horror pixel art with the dark german fairytale look and yuri? yes please! 3/5 spookies!) 2. The return of the Obra Dinn
Tumblr media
(Ghost ship, solving crimes, nautical spooks and amazing atmosphere. 3/5 spookies) 3. Emio, The smiling man
Tumblr media
(Investigation game with amazing graphic and live 2d-animations! a touch of the supernatural. 3/5 spookies!) 4. Paranormasight
Tumblr media
(Seriously one of the best supernatural games I ever played. can be done in 1 or 2 days, its funny, scary and amazing. 5/5 spookies)
And that concludes thjis little list! I could add even more and Might as I think of some!

txt with a bookworm gf 🤍
note: I’ve been on my bookworm shit lately so I thought I would share some ideas (I feel like I did this already so please let me know if I did!) please enjoy
yeonjun
He likes when you read to him. No, he doesn’t care if it’s a memoir, a biography, or a history textbook. He just likes to hear your voice and listen to the story the book is telling. Your voice calms him and he is genuinely interested in what the book is saying. It’s your little bonding time. He sits silently next to you and leans his head on your shoulder as you read out loud.
soobin
He has a little book like with you. You both pick small books to read together and then discuss it. You and him take turns and switch off every other book (he picks and then you pick). When it’s his turn to pick, he almost always picks a manga! When you pick a novel, he has to listen to the audiobook. It helps him focus.
beomgyu
At first, he wasn’t really a big fan of reading for fun. He found it cute that you did it but would playfully call you a nerd. You never minded it. Overtime, he would start to casually ask you about the books you were reading in conversation. Over dinner, he’d ask question about the plot or your thoughts on the book. Even if he doesn’t read the books, he finds himself interested in them.
taehyun
He likes to read but you two have different interests. So, in order to expose each other to new things, you trade books, read them, and update each other on what you think. He loves when you write in the margins of his books or when you leave sticky notes with your thoughts. Whenever he goes back to reread the book, a little piece of you is there and it makes him smile.
huening kai
not super interested in books and all that but would love to hear you yap about them. he would much rather flip through a manga. so, his solution to this is reading his manga next to you while you read your book. if you have big picture encyclopedias of animals or something, he’s also looking at them, showing you his favorite animals.
note: true story for the kai one. I have a giant ocean animal encyclopedia book that I loved looking through as a kid :) it made me so happy! I’ll never get rid of that book.

book recs: feb 2024
(disclaimer: I have spent nearly three months languishing and sullen with post-COVID symptoms and have read, over dec-feb, eighty-one books. this is a ruthlessly streamlined list of recs that does not include, uh, all the rereading of sarah maclean and charlie adhara and georgette heyer books.)
AT FIRST SPITE by olivia dade - what if I moved in next to the man who ruined my engagement to his younger brother, and tried to ruin his life by playing monsterfucking audiobooks really loudly?? a heartfelt and lovely romance that also expertly sets up a great small-town setting for an ongoing series.
THE REFORMATORY by tananarive due - historical horror based on the existence of a real school for boys, clear-eyed and brutal in showing the the effect of racist systems in the 1950s american south. compelling as hell. even if you're not usually into horror, I'd recommend this: the ghost aspect is light-handed and really not as important as the horror of what humans do to other humans.
SOMETHING WILD & WONDERFUL by anita kelly - this is a m/m romance about walking the pacific crest trail which made me see the appeal of very long walks. a miracle! it's gentle and emotional and well put together; the characters really grabbed me.
THE BELL IN THE FOG by lev a.c. rosen - the followup to 'lavender house', and somehow even better?? a historical mystery series featuring a queer private eye in 1950s san francisco who looks into crimes against other queer people. amazing queer history! ACAB! I hope there are fifty more books in this series.
FEAST WHILE YOU CAN* by mikaella clements & onjuli datta - beautiful, greedy, terrifying small-town horror that is also a fucking fantastic, gorgeously written sapphic love story. this one IS for the horror fans. it gave me the absolute creeps but I couldn't put it down.
LADY EVE'S LAST CON* by rebecca fraimow - I described this on bsky as 'if you like Leverage, space opera, old screwball comedies, and dashing sapphics who are at all times spiritually wearing a leather jacket: this one is for you' and I stand by that. huge amounts of fun.
LONG LIVE EVIL* by sarah rees brennan - I will be screaming from here until forever about SRB's first adult fantasy book. if you like the isekai'd-into-a-villain-character setup and want it to be hilarious, genre-savvy and wildly angry and clever, you will roll around in this like a blood-stained mud puddle and then beg for more.
THE LAST HOUR BETWEEN WORLDS* by melissa caruso - really clever and original fantasy about a woman on maternity leave who gets dragged into saving a cocktail party which is falling through increasingly murderous and bizarre dimensions. LISTEN, JUST GO WITH IT. it's a seriously cool adventure.
YOU SHOULD BE SO LUCKY* by cat sebastian - yes, it's another m/m romance about queer history in the mid 20th century, this one between a baseball player and the journalist assigned to write a story about his slump. made me care about baseball. cat is a genius.
*I read these as ARCs, they're not available yet but consider preordering or keep your eye out for them!
