I understand that Connor McCloud used a katana in the original Highlander movie, but there was a story and a lineage that went with that sword. It was given to him by his mentor, Sean Connery's character, and the katana was made specifically for Sean Connery by his father-in-law who was a legendary Japanese swordsmith. It made sense in-universe for a Scottish Highlander, Connor, to fighting with a Japanese katana because he was part of the sword's lineage.

The line "fight like a Highlander" should imply nudity, body paint, and either a broadsword or a bow.
