Cartoon Network Friday Spotlight- Help! It’s the Hair Bear Bunch- “Keep Your Keeper”

Would it shock you if I said that the 70′s were not a great period for Hanna-Barbera?

Creatively, at least. They did still rake in plenty of money as they were responsible for a solid percentage of animation on TV, but most of these shows weren’t very good. Help! It’s the Hair Bear Bunch is no exception, largely recycling their Yogi Bear cartoons and only shaking things up by adding a third bear into the process (although I guess Cindy was there too, but only occasionally) and giving them hippie-inspired outfits and lingo, just swap the park for a zoo. This, and the stories are stretched to a half hour when they can barely handle a third of that length.

Still, this seems to be one of the better remembered HB shows from the early 70′s if only by process of elimination. The characters would occasionally show up in fur suits with other, more iconic HB stars like Yogi and Fred Flintstone, and it would show up somewhat regularly for Boomerang on Cartoon Network’s 70′s blocks. I guess being a Yogi clone instead of a Scooby clone has it stand out a little.

This is the first episode but it’s already shaking things up, as Hair and his boys trick zoo keeper Mr. Peevly into leaving the zoo for his mental health, instead swapping him out for the no-nonsense Mr. Grunch. I think most humans know that when you replace a hardass boss, you’re far more likely to get a tougher supervisor than a looser one, and that’s the case here. So now the bears, in their invisible motorcycle and all, have to convince Peevly to come back. You can tell how this goes, and it has a couple of funny bits and strong voice work, but I don’t see this being an essential show or anything.

That very question being put to our ursine guests, Hair Bear of the Hair Bear Bunch, and Emmy Lou, that rather gracious Southern gal ursine, on a delightfully crisp fall afternoon beside Artificial Lake Delton's legendary waters.

HAIR BEAR: To put it simply ... our mating season will pretty much be late spring into early summer, but when you're a bear, you want to make the most of it, and feel rather good about it! Ohhhh, just to feel that sensation in the loins as the magic of ejaculation releases itself for the good part of an hour with a rather fascinated female in orgy mode! How else could Nature dictate the significance of the sexual act, and how it should feel exactly? EMMY LOU: Just recognising what the feel of the love season must be like among us bears isn't exactly enough, to begin with ... us bears, when you get right down to it, could never feel more delighted than with a male close to us, releasing his Inner Need inside him and me just helping things along in our own distinctive manner, almost like those Polynesians such as one Peter Potamus likes talking about, who can't help but embrace the fun side of the sexual experience without being so unnerved over it!

(This, mind you, over cheese, crackers and sausage.)

So who could imagine going abroad with the Hair Bear Bunch on a warm summer's day enjoying the experience of diving among bears who can't resist the feeling of being so open and direct about love?

Or joining the road crew of The Banana Splits (or, for that matter, the Cattanooga Cats) for a week out on tour, just for the experience of what it would be like to be a band "roadie" out on the road?

Or getting the VIP treatment in Jellystone Park with Yogi, Cindy and Boo-Boo as guides-- and just hoping Yogi will back off from stealing "tourist-type goodies" as part and parcel of the bargain?

Or "going full Aussie" with Kwicky Koala, even if it's more of a sausage sizzle than "shrimp on the barbie," not to mention some Australian ginger beer and plenty of "quality beach time"?

Yes, we can all imagine ...
