Brain Curd #176
Brain Curds are lightly edited flash fiction - practically first drafts - posted daily (haven't missed one yet!) and sometimes written with the express intention of being terrible… but, you know, in an endearing way. Please like and reblog if you enjoy - the notes keep me going!
He's gonna be Frank with you. Read the rest of The Frank Program here on Tumblr!
Last time on The Frank Program, Frank caught Daryl watching something on his phone during recording, and he didn't like what he saw.
Daryl exploded out the door to the parking lot, anger in his stride, fear in his posture, and tears in his eyes. Chad, leaning on a car, got up immediately when he saw the kid running off.
“Hey!” He called out. Daryl wasn’t stopping for anything.
Cautiously, Chad poked his head back inside. Frank was stoic, silent in his host’s seat, a lit cigarette in his left hand. He took a drag from it and sighed out a puff of smoke.
“Come in, Mr. Graves. We oughtta finish the show.”
“You alright, bud?”
There were bags under Frank’s eyes that Chad didn’t recall seeing before. “I’m plenty content to finish recording.”
Graves sat down in his chair. The corner behind him was conspicuously empty. The chair which had been there before sat askew and on its side at the other end of the room.
“You know, Mr. Graves -”
“You can just call me Chad.”
“Well, Chad…” Frank took another hit. “I ain’t touched a cigarette in ten years. Kept this one in the studio just to prove to myself I didn’t need it.” He chuckled. “Funny how I keep proving myself wrong, huh?”
“How’s that?”
“Oh, the usual. I think o’ someone as a friend, or a wife, or… or a son. And I come to find they never were, really. They stab me in the goddamn back.”
“I take it that your chat didn’t go too well?”
Frank sneered. “You have no idea.”
“I’m sure he’ll come around. You know teenagers, I mean… I remember when I was a teenager, I got in arguments with my parents all the time.”
“We’re no stranger to arguments, Chad. This is somethin’ else. I’m losing my boy.”
“What exactly happened?”
Frank huffed and smothered his cigarette in the ashtray. “We better get back to my prepared questions.”
“Yeah…” Chad nodded slowly. “Alright.”
Frank shuffled through pages, looking for a question he still felt like asking. “Uh… Do you and your friends ever have creative differences when working on the show?”
“I don’t think we’d be as effective at doing our jobs if we did. Really, all four of us try to stay out of the creative side of things most of the time. Our producer decides what the story is for a given episode. He takes our full night of footage, and our analysis of the findings, and he gives that to his editor to make the pieces fit together.”
“Does the show replicate the experience of actually bein’ there, do ya think?”
“To be honest with you, I don’t usually watch it. Kind of a ‘been there, done that’ situation. But I have been channel surfing before and caught a rerun from a few years ago, and it definitely brought back memories.”
“Well that’s nice. Nice to have something to look back on. I guess I’ve got that too, huh? A little piece of the past… to bring back memories.”
“Yeah, I guess so. The nice thing about the show is it cuts out all the boring bits. The parts where we’re just sitting around, whispering to each other like we’re trying not to wake up the parents at a sleepover.”
“Right,” Frank said, a lump in his throat. “Those are the parts you really miss when they’re gone.”
Chad tilted his head to look around his microphone. “It’s gonna be okay, Frank. He’ll -”
“Mr. Graves, I don’t want another grown man to see me cry. So thank you for being here, but I must be signing off. Go ahead and tell the people where to find you.”
“I’m on all the socials as @GravesGhostVisions, so just search that up if you want to see where we’re headed next.”
“Thank you. This has been The Frank Program…” Frank struggled to get the words out without letting tears come with. “So long.”

I have a list of ~900 albums from 2019 that I still want to eventually listen to / review [IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT ALERT]
For this project (already 125+ releases deep), which is just impossibly daunting and makes me head hurt. IDK how to streamline this process or is any “critic” out there really listening to “all” the good music? It’s impossible I guess... BUT needless to say, these have made this list from an even larger pool of music that I either listened to briefly and immediately dismissed or (gasp!) never even came across my radar (radar = many many music blogs I follow via RSS).
Anyway, because I’ll most likely never get to this (whatever this is, an Xgau parody or something)... Here is the list (please ignore some of my notations/typos):

THE SHADOW ♦ Classic Radio Show ♦ EP 7 ♦ The Voice Of Death ♦ 12-26-1937
The Shadow Radio Show 12-26-1937
Episode 7
Title: The Voice Of Death
Created By: Walter B. Gibson
Genre(s): Drama and suspense, Detective Fiction
Language: English
The Shadow is the name of a collection of serialized dramas, originally in 1930s pulp novels, and then in a wide variety of Shadow media. One of the most famous adventure heroes of 20th century North America, the Shadow has been featured on the radio, in a long-running pulp magazine series, in American comic books, comic strips, television, serials, video games, and at least five feature films. The radio drama included episodes voiced by Orson Welles.
Originally a mysterious radio show narrator, The Shadow was developed into a distinctive literary character in 1931, later to become a pop culture icon, by writer Walter B. Gibson. The character has been cited as a major influence on the subsequent evolution of comic book superheroes, particularly Batman.
The Shadow debuted on July 31, 1930, as the mysterious narrator of the radio program Detective Story Hour, which was developed to boost sales of Street & Smith's monthly pulp Detective Story Magazine. When listeners of the program began asking at newsstands for copies of "That Shadow detective magazine", Street & Smith decided to create a magazine based on The Shadow and hired Gibson to create a character concept to fit the name and voice and write a story featuring him. The first issue of The Shadow Magazine went on sale on April 1, 1931, a pulp series.
On September 26, 1937, The Shadow radio drama, a new radio series based on the character as created by Gibson for the pulp magazine, premiered with the story "The Death House Rescue", in which The Shadow was characterized as having "the power to cloud men's minds so they cannot see him". As in the magazine stories, The Shadow was not given the literal ability to become invisible.
The introduction from The Shadow radio program "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!", spoken by actor Frank Readick, has earned a place in the American idiom. These words were accompanied by an ominous laugh and a musical theme, Camille Saint-Saëns' Le Rouet d'Omphale ("Omphale's Spinning Wheel", composed in 1872). At the end of each episode, The Shadow reminded listeners that, "The weed of crime bears bitter fruit! Crime does not pay... The Shadow knows!" (Some early episodes, however, used the alternate statement, "As you sow evil, so shall you reap evil! Crime does not pay... The Shadow knows!") This song came second in the first part of the Sanremo Giovani 2018 Music Festival for emergent artists. The lyrics talk about a love relationship badly judged by the entourage. 2018-musique.
Positions quasi-interchangeables.
1) SOB x RBE - Gangin’ II 2) Kodak Black - Dying to live 3) Sheck Wes - MUDBOY 4) 03 Greedo - God Level 5) Lil Durk - STTS3 6) Yungeen Ace - Life of Betrayal 7) NBA YoungBoy - Until Death Call My Name 8) Le best-of de Sada Baby 9) SCH - JVLIUS 10) Playboi Carti - Die Lit 11) BlocBoy JB - SIMI 12) Roc Marciano - Behold a dark horse 13) Payroll Giovanni - Big Bossin Vol. 2 14) Koran Streets - Late 20s

Island Records and UMe have announced the 40th-anniversary release of U2's A Celebration, a limited edition 12" vinyl EP, on Record Store Day. U2 released "A Celebration" as a non-album single in March 1982, between the records October (1981) and War (1983). This 40th-anniversary limited-edition reissue is a 4-track EP containing two previously unreleased recordings. The first is a studio out-take of the title track. The second is a performance of b-side and live favorite "Trash, Trampoline And The Party Girl," recorded live in October 2015 in Köln, Germany during the iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE tour. The 4 track 12" EP, cut at 45 rpm, is pressed on 180g black vinyl. The back cover features stills of the rock band from the video directed by Meiert Avis.
The estate of late country music star Charlie Daniels has sold a stake in the singer's music catalog to Bob Frank Entertainment. The stake includes tracks such as "The South's Gonna Do It (Again)" with Keith Urban on guitar, "Long Haired Country Boy" with Brooks & Dunn, "Southern Boy" with Travis Tritt, and a live version of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." The terms of the deal have not been disclosed. However, Bob Frank Entertainment will now be equal partners with Blue Hat Records and the Daniels estate, with each owning one-third of the music assets. Blue Hat Records is a label launched by Daniels and his manager David Corlew, while the estate is overseen by Daniels' wife, Hazel, and his son, Charlie Jr. "This transaction will be the first of many for BFE's new privately funded investment arm, Red Shark Ventures, which is focused on catalog masters," said BFE CEO Bob Frank. "What better way to launch this effort then with our long-time partner Blue Hat Records who we have been in business with for over 20 years. With such a deep and historic archive, we already have a strong release schedule through 2023."
Bon Jovi have announced that they are offering a chance for local bands to open for the legendary rock band's upcoming tour. The potential groups must submit an audition video of original music for consideration. One winner will be selected for each tour date in April. Bon Jovi is extending a helping hand to local bands who have lost opportunities to perform due to the pandemic. "We have all missed touring, and we know that nothing can replace the energy of a live show for the fans or the band," frontman Jon Bon Jovi said in a statement.
The rock band's month-long spring tour will kick off in Omaha, Nebraska, on April 1.

2019-04-19 - 09:00-12:00 - The Midway
The Midway returns for its annual one and only Friday show of the year, April 19, 2019. The theme: funeral songs. For some, a sombre or pithy reflection. For others, a sentimental soundtrack - or even a jolly celebration. Some of these songs have become legends unto themselves, while others have birthed new traditions. Enjoy a wickedly woke wake as we explore some famous funeral tunes, and invite listeners to get in touch with their own bury melodies.

October 12, 2020: On Gratitude
Listen on Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/theamcjsw/the-am-monday-october-12-2020
Stream on CJSW.com: https://cjsw.com/program/the-a-m/episode/20201012/
About an hour into this week’s episode I tried to put together some thoughts I’ve been having about Thanksgiving’s complicated past and the importance of gratitude, and because I don’t think it quite came together, I wanted to try again here. Hopefully you’ll indulge the non-musical digression.
First of all, for a bit on the history of Canadian Thanksgiving, this Macleans piece offers a well-written summary. The short of it is, there isn’t a single clear point of origin, and there are connections to indigenous harvest celebrations, Puritan days of Thanksgiving, Christian proselytizing, broken treaties, and self-serving myths, all of which make unquestioningly celebrating the holiday a difficult thing to do.
On the other hand, a day devoted to gratitude, separate from the history of Canadian and American Thanksgiving, is a good, healthy, and maybe even essential thing. Kahsto’sera’a Paulette Moore and Tehahenteh Frank Miller write in great detail about the importance of gratitude in their culture (both describe themselves as Kanyen’kehaka Mohawk, Six Nations of the Grand River Territory), and although a few things from that piece struck me, what hit me deepest was the notion of gratitude as a redemptive and reconnective practice.
They describe a dark time in their culture's history, where they were at war with each other and disconnected from their lands, which was only overcome after they were reminded of the gift of gratitude. “Our ancient practice of thanksgiving saved us time and again from the devastation of a world out of balance,” they write. “We were fearful and greedy, hoarding resources and extracting life and energy... Over time we were able to achieve what seemed impossible; we re-engaged simple acts of thanks, which led to healed relationships. Eventually we united as the people known as Rotinonhsyón:ni/Iroquois – a confederacy that remains the oldest participatory democracy on Earth.”
On the BBC News this morning, there was a report on a study promising a bleak future for humanity if we (meaning the world, but really meaning industrial nations) continue on the path we’re on. It was an eerily direct echo of Moore and Miller’s writing of their Nation’s past before rediscovering gratitude and the connections it nurtures. As in their example, practicing gratitude won't be an instant fix—it's an ongoing practice that leads to incremental change—but it may be at least part of the answer.
I ended this week’s episode by trying to show some of the gratitude that I feel for my community and the land I live on—and found it was surprisingly awkward to do. Expressing gratitude is vulnerable and bringing it up on air felt hokey, and somehow embarrassing. Afterwards I tried to figure out why that was, and I think it’s because it cuts against the grain of self-sufficiency that’s so deeply inherent in Western culture. To understand how, it helps to think about when you do and don't express gratitude. You don’t say thank you for something you did for yourself, so to be grateful for something is to say that you are dependent, or even subservient to whatever provided it. You don’t say thank you for things that are inevitable, so gratitude is a reminder that the things we value most are contingent and temporary. Both of those are vulnerable admissions. Gratitude also implies a debt of sorts, although not in the same sense that a bank loan creates a debt, where there’s an obligation to repay exactly what was given. That's a transaction, and we don’t really feel gratitude for transactions, for bank loans or purchases where we spend an amount equal to what we received. But it’s not about getting more than we put in, either. We don’t feel gratitude just because we got the better deal. Instead it seems to be about the relationship a gesture implies, and the obligation it creates isn’t to even the accounts, it’s to create more gratitude, by doing the sorts of things that others can be grateful for. In that way, the debt gratitude creates isn't owed to any one person, it's owed to everyone—and when repaid, it grows exponentially. One last though. Last month I was on the Sunshine Coast in BC, and there was a hiking path I walked on at least three different days. Every time, it was jaw-droppingly beautiful. The last time I walked it, as I was leaving, I felt the need to thank the path for those experiences--to literally say thank you to the woods for the beauty and calm it had given me. I don’t believe there was anything there, spiritual or otherwise, that could hear me and understand what I was saying. I did it because I liked the relationship it created between me and that place. Rituals of gratitude are about connection, but they’re also about your own internal attitudes, and the relationship you want to have to the world. And because of that, Thanksgiving—the concept, if not the holiday—is one of the most profound rituals we have.

THE SHADOW ♦ Classic Radio Show ♦ EP 6 ♦ The Death Triangle ♦ 12-12-1937
The Shadow Radio Show 12-12-1937
Episode 6
Title: The Death Triangle
The Shadow knows!")
