I am curious what Jungian archetype and MBTI type you would associate the kingfisher with?

the kingfisher is such a gorgeous bird, it's no wonder it has so many associations attributed to it.

starting off, the kingfisher has a bunch of subspecies from the common kingfisher to the laughing kookaburra. in general what's consistent across kingfishers as a species is that they're highly territorial and boundary-keeping, they hunt from perches and will return to them to bash their prey, and they're very noisy communicators. they're extraordinarily direct flyers and many of them actually don't fish as per their namesake. they tend to vary in social tolerance and cooperation (some species engage in cooperative breeding and helper behavior), migration tendencies and territory size, and whether they're highly specialized feeders or generalists.

istj and istp might be a good place to start for these guys? the degree of independence, precision, and creation of a system in their hunting behavior lends itself well to an istj, particularly in water kingfishers like the belted kingfisher. however some species do show a higher degree of adaptability in their behavior and hunting strategies that would better fit an istp. most of them though are going to be introverted, except for some species of kookaburra who live in loose family groups... and i see a better case for sensing over intuition considering their powerful sense of environmental observation.

their jungian archetypes i think are particularly interesting. i would consider them the magician, the lover, and potentially the outlaw. a really enigmatic mix. this of course will again depend on subspecies (the laughing kookaburra absolutely will fit the jester, for example), but the most notorious tales of the kingfisher associate this species with transformation, prosperity, and romantic devotion. its greek creation myth, for example, features the princess alcyone who drowned herself in the ocean out of despair for her lover who died at sea, and the gods transformed them both into kingfishers. they became known for calm waters, and even in modern times are used by fishermen to indicate when there's a large fish population nearby. even in the story of noah's ark the kingfisher is said to be the first animal released from the ship, whereupon it promptly sprouted rainbow plumage from the setting sun on its breast and the sky on its back. there are plenty of cultures that associate the kingfisher with the divine and being a spiritual messenger. and in china kingfishers are a symbol of a happy marriage, undoubtedly attributed with the lover archetype.

thus kingfishers typically represent fortune and fertility... but not all cultures view kingfishers as a positive omen. the makah tribe tells of how the first human thief was transformed into a kingfisher, and in several cultures, including the borneans and the maranao, the kingfisher is an omen of death. gerard manley hopkins famously wrote about the kingfisher symbolizing both peace and flame, both mortality and immortality: as kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies dráw flame ... each mortal thing does one thing and the same. the kingfisher's beauty has inspired people around the world to see it as incomparably good or bad, and certainly it does inspire a polarity that i think fits the magician, pursuing knowledge across the span of the material and immaterial.

in short, someone with a kingfisher pullman form is going to be observant and looking towards the future, transformative and always finding good luck, connected with the waters, talented and untouchable, and embraces the mortality of life as it is. they are keen and thoughtful, enigmatic, mysterious in their intention but noble regardless.

academic  rival:   personally,  i’d  love  for  someone  who’s  just  naturally  good  at  academia  to  be  her  rival,  like  the  person  who  doesn’t  study  and  “doesn’t  care”  but  always  just  manages  to  beat  her  in  scores;  yeah,  i  think  that’d  be  fun  to  watch  her  spontaneously  combust.

best  friend:  the  one  person  who  she’s  like  .  .  .  super  grateful  for  because  they’re  always  there,  no  matter  what  she  goes  through  or  does  to  them  through  her  stress  induced  breakdowns.  you  know.  they’re  bffs  and  always  eat  together  and  spend  time  together  n  gossip  together.  eloise

tutee:  someone  that  either  hestia’s  offered  to  help  or  has  been  forced  to  help,  either  way,  she’s  as  strict  as  any  professor  and  takes  her  job  completely  seriously.  as  in,  will  approach  them  in  the  great  hall  and  ask  if  they’ve  done  the  work  they’re  supposed  to  do.

stress  reliever:  imagine  this  -  hestia  comes  up  to  your  muse  and  is  like  we  need  to  talk,  but  they  just  find  a  nice  seat  underneath  one  of  the  archways  and  talk  into  the  night,  they  make  hestia  laugh,  hestia  makes  them  laugh,  they  have  flushed  cheeks  by  the  end  of  it  and  she  doesn’t  speak  to  them  otherwise.  xenophilius

Oh, anon, you are a person after my own heart. I love to talk personality types even though I will always admit that they are an imperfect tool and that you can’t entirely classify people. But since I am an ENFJ, figuring other people out is a hobby of mine. Tell me your sign, tell me your enneagram, tell me your MBTI. Teach me how to understand you better. 

You’ll notice that I listed Roman on here twice. That’s because he seems to present as two different personalities depending on which side of him is more dominant at the time: his human side, or his upir side. There is a theory in personality assessment that, when you’re acting in a way that is contrary to your natural type, it places you under a great deal of stress. I maintain that the human side of Roman is his natural type, and wrestling with his upir side makes him irritable and difficult to be around and prevents true self-actualization.

I’ve just been thinking, and I’ve come to the conclusion that Maeve is a walking Myers Briggs calculator. She can stand in front of someone for one minute and deduce perfectly their personality type... and usually their Hogwarts house too.
