reason: It's enemies-to-lovers in the best way. And the sexual tension is delicious.

deleting my dating apps because i want to meet someone the old fashioned way (i attend saturnalia games, fall in love at first sight with the slave fighting the retiarius, save him from the claws of death, buy him with my scarse life earnings and make him my freedman)

Defixio by Nahnahnahnah
The Eagle | Marcus Flavius Aquila/Esca Mac Cunoval | 8 053 words 125 pages | 8 signatures | 5,8 pt Bodoni 72 Book
A trip to the healing waters of Aquae Sulis leads to revelations, confessions, and far more excitement than Marcus or Esca anticipated.
Ask me to come up with a top 5 list of my all time favourite fic and this will be on it, and I'm not even sure I can tell you why. Well I could, but we'd be here all day. Effortlessly well written and characterised, wonderfully set up and tied together – it's a calming trip to the spa, a little mystery to solve, and full of my favourite kind of long-suffering (and ultimately requited) pining.

i love The Eagle 2011 movie adaptation of the Eagle of the Ninth but it makes me SO sad how many moments between Marcus and Esca aren’t in the movie.
Like when Esca had the option of running away and not being Marcus’s slave but he CHOSE to stay so that he could be with Marcus: “But I chose to go with him because it was in my heart that it might be you that we went to." DIRECT QUOTE FROM THE BOOK!!!! And they hadn’t even spoken to each other at that point 😭😭😭
Like the fact that esca says “I have not served the Centurion because I was his slave, I have served Marcus, and it was not slave-service.” ALL WHILE HOLDING MARCUS’S HAND AND THIS IS BEFORE THEY GO ON THE JOURNEY FOR THE EAGLE!!! Like the books so much gayer than the movie!!!

Why Esca Mac Cunoval is my absolute favorite character of all time:
How to describe why I adore him... He is more than you think. He starts of kinda shut off and you don't get him, until somewhat halfway trough the movie. I think I have to summarize his story so you might understand why I adore him, and have not shut up about him since 2020. So sorry for the whole movie summary:
We first meet Esca at the gladiator arena, he is a slave. During the fight of the dead he just let's himself get punched so he can die. He is tired of being a slave and wants his dead the way he wants it.
One guy in the tribune however doesn't like that idea and saves him. The guys uncle then buys him for Marcus, as his personal body slave.
When they meet, he comes of as a unreadable person. He absolutely hates the Romans, I mean son of a dead clans chief... powerfull fighter.
He is however never mean toward his master, or anyone.
When Marcus decides to go look for the eagle he takes Esca with him. A foolish decision according to many, including his uncle who say that he will kill him the moment he crosses the border, Marcus is but spooked but defends Esca and takes him with him. This shows Marcus' loyalty towards Esca (still his slave)
When they get attacked by warriors (childeren) Esca can't kill the young child. This shows compassion and kindness, something we hadn't seen from him earlier. Marcus does kill the child tho and berates Esca for not killing him.
He made up a whole different route so that they wouldn't find the place of 'heros' because he has more respect for them, than his master.
When they get caught by the Seal People, he devices a whole plan so they would survive the trip. He didn't let Marcus know, wich made the other worried and Marcus thinks Esca betrayed him. That's until Esca comes in at the right time to help Marcus get the Eagle and get out of there. This shows loyalty and bravery.
(Esca again befriendend a child. Only for that one to get killed by his own father during the last battle, wich hurts Esca.)
When Esca doesn't translate the harmful sentences about Marcus father to Marcus, this shows kindness and maybe a need to protect.
When Esca refuses to leave Marcus (wounded) behind. He tells him to set him free before he gives up on him, wich Marcus does. Esca then gets the other former Eagles and they fight together against the seal people. Again bravery and loyalty, even when he isn't Marcus slave anymore. During the fight the prince of the Seal People almost kills Esca, but he gets saved by Marcus.
Remember how I said that Esca hates Romans? Well I think, no I know he likes one Roman. The Roman who took a chance on him, showed him compassion, loyalty and kindness, wich allowed Esca to be himself aswell. A kind but troubled guy with a horrible past (family got killed by Romans, he got taken and branded as a slave...) who is kinder than you think, you just gotta earn his trust, loyalty and friendship.

“you are still my slave!”
“and you’d be dead in a ditch without me!”
“I saved your miserable life!”
followed by a short but incredibly homoerotic wrestling in the mud scene DIRECTLY before they find themselves in a situation that flips their whole dynamic on its head I am unwell I am screaming and crying and throwing up I am going insane

The only thing I trully judge people about fandom-wise is opinions on Thor.
" Thor was boring/needed an upgrade"
Moron, absolute moron. I will assume you fell asleep during lotr because it's too long and " historical-looking".
What other enlightening takes do you have for me? They should have took the Eagles to Mordor? Sam is the real hero cause Frodo did nothing?
Your words mean nothing to me.
