hmmmmm well I only just got up to season 2 episode 4 on my rewatch and I don't remember the rest of the episodes from my first watch, but out of the ones I've just rewatched The Lucky Cat Caper came to mind first, tho that may just be because it has a lot of characters I like in it haha. French Connection Caper may actually be the fave rn :-) For Chase scenes, Carmen going way out of her way to save him, and the whole Shadowsan plot being put in motion cause I love him too <3

the main reason i dislike this episode and need for speed is because zack doesnt ever get to learn. he was impulsive and it was bad in duke of vermeer, he was impulsive and it was bad in boston tea (okay fine, it shows us his younger self! fine with that) BUT THEN HE IS IMPULSIVE AND ITS BAD AGAIN NEXT TIME. FOR THE SAME REASONS whyyy wouldn't they take duke of vermeer as an opportunity to show his growth instead of making him out to be some angry no control childish idiot who sacrifices untold amounts for a little payback. and drags ivy down with him EVERY TIME

there's something so cool and sinister about ivy smiling, reassuring him, and then slowly pulling down the ski mask to hide any emotion. ivy and zack seem like they could have been prime targets for VILE recruitment- they could have gone down a much darker path

CARMEN SANDIEGO OC WEEK DAY TWO: MISSION

Missions

So i can’t draw the missions Olivia has been on, but here are a few ideas i’ve thought of but never really written down before:

She’d probably appear in “The Duke of Vermeer Caper” and “The Fashionista Caper” episodes, since the Countess is the sort of main focus on those episodes. I’m also thinking about the when Cleo went to Egypt with Tigress it should be Mirrorball instead, since the whole ‘bodyguard’ thing. Since Olivia is British i was thinking of making a fan episode about a caper in the UK, but i’ve yet to decide what she’d be stealing and what happens lmao

My other VILE OC, Angel (Introduction for her coming soon!) would probably have her own caper to do with flowers or poisonous flowers for that matter, and since she gets kidnapped that would also happen in that episode.

Season 1, Episode 5: the Duke of Vermeer caper

This episode is perfect. The end.

Okay okay fine.

This is one of my favorite episodes. The entire beginning is a disaster for the team but they scramble it’s beautiful. And Chase also being a disaster. This entire episode is perfect in its comedic and climatic timing. Every little scene just. Hits perfect for me

Chief’s got Julia’s back! Very slick how she sees the situation and turns it on it’s head,

Player ducking first and then turning off video chat will never not make me laugh. It’s like an afterthought. And hilarious he doesn’t just turn it off first. It’s like he feels like he’s actually there with them. /feels

The ENTIRE sequence turning Zack into a Duke. It’s a bit of a rare thing to see the group actively planning/prepping for the caper. Aside from the geography brief this stuff is usually off screen. So fun to see the team interacting in a non life threatening situation. And Zack works so hard despite his complaints

Lol Carmen didn’t say anything about a blindfold.

Aww the girls were going to help Chase after he sank. They care.

Honestly tho, 60% of the time Ivy is out of her comfort zone but she’s REALLY out of it being the driver. She works under the dashboard not behind the wheel. She’s still trying her best though and it pays off when she listens to herself and doesn’t jump lol. I admire her so much.

“His idea of art is probably dogs playing poker.” Zack I love you. Honestly most of Zack’s cover lines are pretty good and funny. “Sticky fingers” is my fav one though.

Very clever to put the camera on the briefcase. It’s exactly where it needs to be. Player is just “thank you very much I’ll take that” the entire time.

The realIzATion of caviar.

Chase Devineaux. I. The staging of the scene, the dialogue. I can’t express how much I love that scene. He gets everything right but also oh so wrong.

I appreciate that Cleo was paranoid enough to install a trap and Carmen had masks ready. Carmen’s not kidding when she says she knows them.

And the first glimpse of big bad Ivy. The delivery of that line slaps every time.

And Carmen giving the sibs high praise for their roles. I’m feeling the family feels.

I love this episode so much haha.

So, my favorite thing about rc would be how they always find some way protect each other, even though things are tough. They’re chemistry is so good! Carmen just had such an amazing personality, she works hard, so caring, wants do do what’s best for everyone, and spunky. My favorite episode….. that’s tough. Ig it would be either The Duke of Vermeer Caper or The Crackle Goes Kiwi Caper. I mean, Gray :) is my favorite side character. or CHASE HEHEHEH

Coach Brunt and Shadowsan in season 1 : contrast and juxtaposition

During season 1 of Carmen Sandiego (2019), two VILE faculty members in particular, Coach Brunt and Shadowsan, are subtly compared. Alike at first, they end up differing in major ways.

They are both very discrete (outside of the Becoming Carmen Sandiego, an expository double episode, and the finale, which are special cases and change the status quo). In most episodes, they barely speak or even appear. They have no lines from episode 3 to episode 6 included. They only start speaking again in episode 7, and they progressively gain more narrative weight in those last episodes.

In episode 8, when Shadowsan and Brunt come to a literal opposition, it's regarding Carmen and their treatment of her. Shadowsan accuses Coach Brunt of being soft on Carmen and repeats he was always against her enrolling, when he is the one secretly on her side. Coach Brunt deflects and subtly implies she isn't soft anymore. All this is foreshadowing for what happens in the next episode.

In episode 9, Coach Brunt saying she agrees with Shadowsan (who was supposed to get rid of Carmen) garners a shocked reaction from the other faculty members. She even acknowledges how unusual that is with a "that's right, for once".

They don’t order or organize any caper. We have the Fishy doubloon caper and the Chasing paper caper for Maelstrom, the Duke of Vermeer caper for Cleo, the Opera in the outback caper and the Sticky rice caper for Bellum, but neither Shadowsan nor Brunt try to organize any (not counting the Lucky cat caper as it's not said who organized the stamp theft). The most we have is Shadowsan opposing Paperstar stealing the Magna carta in episode 7 and asking to send Tigress in San Francisco in episode 8. Brunt doesn’t even give her opinion on any caper beside voting on them and criticizing Shadowsan's choice of Tigress in episode 8.

In Becoming Carmen Sandiego, they’re the most developed of the VILE faculty in their relationship with Carmen - Brunt in positive (the protector, the support, the motherly presence), Shadowsan in negative (the constant opposition as she tries to become a professional thief).

Of course they end up being the two who go ‘take care of’ Carmen in the final episode of season 1.

They’re the one VILE faculty member who Carmen felt close to VS the one VILE faculty member who seemed to hold something against her and whom she resented

The VILE faculty member who directly tried to kill Carmen VS the VILE faculty member who saved her and then joined her team

The one who Carmen wrongly thought had found her as a baby VS the one who had actually found her

If Heart Ache was in The Duke of Vermeer Caper

[Author’s Note: A silly little thing I wanted to write for my Carmen Sandiego oc Amelia/ Heart Ache, enjoy!]

     “Does this means anything to ya?” The red head glided his pointer finger across his neck while looking Dash Haber in the eyes. 

Dash might have been passive, maybe even meek, but Heart Ache wasn’t and she didn’t appreciate the gesture that was aimed at her lover. “Excuse me?” The smart watch on her right wrist only showed numbers, a moment ago it was at zero but it was quickly rising to a hundred. An invention created by Dr. Bellum to track the emotions of more…unpredictable operatives. 

“Honey bunches please…It’s not worth it. We aren’t allowed to hurt the client, remember?” Heart Ache took a few steps closer towards the poor “duke” as the number continued to go up. “Don’t ‘honey bunches’ me right now. He just threatened you! You’re gonna let that slide!?” She crackled her knuckles, getting a kick out of the fear in Zach’s eyes. This wasn’t ideal but both Carmen and Ivy were ready to bust out of their hiding spots if it was needed. “I think I’m gonna show him how we do things Jersey.” 

Zach put his hands up to his chest. This 6’1 girl in pink with the thickest accent he ever heard was threatening to beat him up. Of course he was terrified!

“So you don’t want to go to the crepe place?” Heart Ache looked over at her lover speaking. “The place with outside seating in a rose garden, it closes in two hours.” The bait was set and she took it. “Hmph!” She grabbed Dash’s hand and glared at the other male, despite that the number on her watch went down significantly. From eighty-seven to forty-five. Some what of an improvement. 

“Bye, bye duke! See you around!” A devious chuckle left glossy lips as she strutted down the hallway. 

The door was shut by Carmen and Zach let out a breath he didn’t even know he was holding. Ivy looked at the door with a frame. “And who was that psycho!? She almost pounded my brother into bits!” 

Carmen twisted the lock on the door to make sure the door would stay shut. “Heart Ache. I’m surprised I didn’t see her sooner. If she’s going to be there with a vendetta against Zach we need to make sure he’s acting like a proper duke by tonight.”

Season 2, Episode 2 the hot rocks of Rio caper (Pt 2) for @csweekly

I love this episode (she says every week)

This is the first time we see Shadowsan acting, knowing he’s acting, and its so interesting to see. Because during the part where he’s REaLLY acting, he sells it. When he’s crowing about how much he’s hurt Carmen, he HAMS it up so that Carmen knows without a shadow of doubt that he IS acting, and this is just what he’s been doing for her all these years. AND CARMEN IS SO FUNNY SHE ALMOST DOESN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO SHE’S NOT USED TO WORKING WITH SOMEONE IN THE FIELD THIS WAY. She’s usually the one calling the shots, not having to bounce off of someone else’s lead. (See also Duke of Vermeer caper)

Also Le Chevre is so funny here he’s so onto Shadowsan. He deserves it after stealing that ball from those kids, not sorry.

The way the Faculty all realize at the same time that Shadowsan’s betrayed them. They don’t have concrete proof yet but they just Know. Also Brunt is the only one who doesn’t understand the possible betrayal because again, family. Cleo straight up doesn’t allow that conversation to go further because they don’t CARE. Its like they just ignore Brunt and let her live in this little family fantasy. Also ‘after we welcomed him the way we did’ yeah Brunt, welcomed him after you had him kill Dexter oanognasg its all so screwed up I love it.

I also love how they think Carmen is allied with ACME somehow.

Carmen and Shadowsan both hide their red objects inside trash cans. Carmen her coat and Shadowsan the siblings LOL Congratulations Shadowsan, you went from father of one to father of four within a twelve hour period.

THIS IS MY FAVORITE PART OF THE EPISODE. Zack and Ivy meet Shadowsan. 1. They do NOT recognize him as the guy who jumped them. 2. They know EXACTLY who he is, meaning that Carmen has told them EVERYTHING in a very VENTING fashion. (give me those late night slumber party chats PLEASE) 3. PROTECTIVE IVY 4. Zack’s new dad

RIP Chase he got demoted to office work. Okay but in scenes like this, I can’t help but think he and Carmen would really get along because Carmen too would hate paperwork. To Chase’s credit, he sticks around longer than Carmen would.

The horrified look on Shadowsan’s face when he sees Player LOL. They get younger and younger. Also, the fact that she calls him her secret weapon kills me because its true and the secret never gets uncovered haha. Its heartwarming to see how highly she values him.

I’ve ridden on a duck boat its pretty sweet.

Awww Carmen is SO excited to be running this caper with Shadowsan and he isn’t having it.

This plan by VILE is actually pretty clever. Even without the hint from El Topo I bet team Carmen would have figured it out though.

I like how Carmen uses Tigress’s own strategy against her, distracting with sand/rubble to the face. Appropriate since the tables have turned. Tigress thought she was Shadowsan’s favorite student, but it was Carmen all along.

Also Shadowsan does not break a sweat.

Carmen’s little smile when she sees what the siblings have found for a disguise. She is SUCH an enabler. I’m gonna emphasize this point next episode with my favorite example.

Aww even Shadowsan approves of the team effort!

Brunt destroying everything in the background. A+ comedy.

So, let me express my appreciation for what the show does. Shadowsan could have left on his own all mysterious like and teamed up with Carmen every now and then. But no. They let Shadowsan and Carmen have a heart to heart, and Shadowsan RESPECTS Carmen so much that he not only listens to her after the caper, but he accepts her offer to travel and join her, telling her how much he is grateful for her example in his life. She saved him. This is mindblowingly big and such a cool character arc for a mentor character. He joins the family literally this time, and we get him (begrudgingly at times) bonding with all of them. And I am so grateful this is the route the show chose to take.

Argh. The way Shadowsan tips around the truth about Argentina. The way his face contorts in pain over keeping this a secret from her after she JUST said no secrets. I LOVE rewatching this show.

I do love the cool detail that Zack and Ivy are already gone by the time Carmen and Shadowsan are making their getaway. The siblings are used to blending in as civilians.

The LOOK on poor Julia’s face when her entire world gets SHATTERED. Carmen is giving her zero favors to help her case.
