First Round the series: Hallelujah (Drabble No.1)

I'm writing this for @piratewithvigor / Arin.

Violet x Duke (aka Croautier)

Violet is closing up the Canadian Bacon Bar and Grill one night, her car is running in the parking lot, right as the song 'Hallelujah' starts playing on the radio, the rain outside starts gently falling.

I heard there was a secret chord

Winona is waiting in Violet's car, getting warm and waiting for Violet to finish up, knowing it'll take longer due to the mood she's in.

That David played and it pleased the lord

Violet lets out a deep sigh, all month long she's been trying to get Duke to ask her out, she's reached the end of her rope.

But you don't really care for music, do you?

Violet, with her short blonde hair still tied in a bun, wipes down the last few tables and stacks the chairs atop each one.

Well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth

Over the other side of the highway, Officer Duke Gautier strides through the station, uniform sticking to him from a mix of humid air and sweat, he strides back to the locker-room.

The minor fall and the major lift

Duke's older brother Val is close behind him, walking and talking with Buck back to the locker-room. It's been a long day and Duke knows it, having chased down two lawbreakers during his shift.

The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Violet lets her hair down, sliding the hair-elastic around her wrist, heaving another deep sigh as she collects her gym bag from the locker room and changes into her running gear.

Violet slides off the tacky short-shorts of her uniform, a 'sexy' cop Halloween costume. She's tried and failed in love before, but this feels different somehow.

Duke opens his locker, forgetting to turn on the light as the rain outside darkens the sky, effectively turning the room's lighting a deep, almost morose, grey.

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof

Duke's face is partially lit as he rests his head against a closed locker. he begins unbuttoning his shirt, his breathing is shaky but he's not sick.

You saw her bathing on the roof

Violet brushes her hair in the bathroom mirror, forgoing the fact that it'll get wet anyway, she's too deep in a haze of sadness to care.

Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you

Violet washes her hands, then splashes some water in her face to freshen herself up, drying herself with some paper towels.

She tied you to her kitchen chair

Duke closes his eyes for a moment, his shirt unbuttoned down to just under his pecs, his chest partially exposed, showing off sweat soaked skin.

She broke your throne and she cut your hair

Val flicks on the light in the small locker-room, sighing at his brother upon seeing him.

And from your lips, she drew the Hallelujah

Duke stops instantly. Val raises an eyebrow. Duke lifts his head up, locking eyes with his older brother for a second, before rushing past Val and Buck, yelling back a disingenuous 'Sorry!'

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Duke runs out of the station, a look of determination on his face.

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Violet closes the windows as she passes them, locking each one and taking in the sound of her heels against the hardwood floor.

Baby, I've been here before

Violet passes the stairs, walking to the still open windows of the indoor dining area before heading downstairs.

I've seen this room and I've walked this floor

Duke heads for the bridge over the highway, passing the squad cars and sliding over the bonnet of one.

You know, I used to live alone before I knew you

Duke rushes over the footbridge, soaked to the skin with a mix of rain and sweat, the rain's heavier now, almost making Duke slip at some points.

And I've seen your flag on the marble arch

Violet locks the door to the kitchen and the door to the back porch/outdoor seating area, heading towards the front door.

And Love is not a victory march

Violet locks the gate leading to behind the bar. Her footsteps heavier than they've ever been before, the weight of this perceived loss nagging at her mind and soul.

It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Duke is mere meters from the front door, he starts wondering if he's too late.

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Violet is just about to close and lock the front door to the building she's grown to know as a second home.

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Duke almost crashes into Violet's back.

Well, there was a time when you let me know

He swirls her around, lifting her feet off the ground and crashing his lips against hers.

What's really going on below

Duke puts her feet back on the ground, leaning into the barely closed front door.

But now you never show that to me, do you?

Duke has his arms wrapped around her waist, shielding her smaller frame from the rain, soaking the back of her shirt with his touch.

But remember, when I moved in you

They fall back as the door reopens itself, Violet sending Duke crashing to the floor with her.

And the holy dove was moving too

Duke lifts himself off her momentarily, making sure she's okay.

And every breath, we drew was Hallelujah

Violet lifts herself just enough to kiss him, intertwining her left hand in his hair and placing the other hand on Duke's lower back, pulling him in.

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Duke lets her pull him in, deepening the kiss and readjusting himself so her legs are between his own, his arms beside hers.

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Violet bites at Duke's lower lip, making him groan ever so slightly.

Maybe there's a God above

Duke's left leg slips on the wet floor, sending his groin smashing into hers abruptly.

But, all I've ever learned from love

Violet gasps in response and Duke slips his tongue into her mouth, moving his arms to intertwine his hands with her hair

Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you?

Duke breaks the kiss, moving to kiss Violet's jaw and neck.

And it's not a cry, that you hear at night

Duke re-shifts their bodies, lifting Violet's leg so that her thigh is at his hip.

It's not somebody, who's seen the light

Violet slips her right hand down his back and into the waistband of his trousers, caressing his jaw in her left.

It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Duke nips at her neck, not trying to harm her but attempting to excite her.

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Duke's groin bucks against Violet's, needy and rough.

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Violet slips her right hand so that it's under Duke, against his groin.

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

The only source of heat in that moment is their bodies.

Duke kisses her temple, whispering a gentle 'I love you' to her before trying to lift himself up.

Duke helps Violet up after him, pulling her into a tight hug.

Philip, In Role With No Job Description, Was Queen’s Bedrock

LONDON (AP) — When Prince Philip married the heir to the British throne, he knew he was stepping into virtually uncharted territory.

There was no official role for the husband of a sovereign queen, no constitutional duty or legal responsibility.

“There was no precedent,” he said when he turned 90. “If I asked somebody, ‘What do you expect me to do?’ They all looked blank. They had no idea.”

His wife Elizabeth knew exactly what she had to do when she became queen in 1952 after the premature death of her father, King George VI. For Philip, though, her ascension to the throne marked the end of his career as a naval officer and a plunge into uncertainty.

But at that crucial moment, he carved out the part he would carry through the decades: the queen’s honest and unwavering bedrock of support through a turbulent reign in which the thousand-year-old monarchy was forced to reinvent itself for the 21st century. It was a role the Duke of Edinburgh played until his death Friday at age 99.

His marriage both defined and constricted his life, placing the irascible, tough-minded Philip three steps behind the queen in public, even if he played a significant role at home, including in raising four children.

His life spanned nearly a century of European history, starting with his birth as a member of the Greek royal family and ending with him as the longest serving consort in British history, surpassing Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III.

He was known for his occasionally deeply offensive remarks — and for gamely fulfilling more than 20,000 royal engagements to boost British interests home and abroad. He headed hundreds of charities, founded programs that helped British schoolchildren participate in challenging outdoor adventures.

Philip saw his sole role as providing support for his wife as she confronted the changing demands placed on a constitutional monarch who began her reign as Britain retreated from empire and steered the monarchy through decades of declining social deference and U.K. power into a modern world where people demand intimacy from their icons.

In the 1970s, Michael Parker, an old navy friend and former private secretary of the prince, said of him: “He told me the first day he offered me my job, that his job — first, second and last — was never to let her down.”

The queen — a very private person not given to extravagant displays of affections — once called him “her rock” in public.

In private, Philip called his wife Lilibet; but he referred to her in conversation with others as “The Queen.”

Over the course of the decades, Philip’s image changed from that of handsome, dashing athlete to arrogant and insensitive curmudgeon. In his later years, the image finally settled into that of droll and philosophical observer of the times, an elderly, craggy-faced man who maintained his military bearing in public despite a host of ailments.

Not content to stay on the sidelines, he promoted British industry and science, espoused environmental preservation long before it became fashionable, and traveled widely and frequently in support of his many charities.

In those frequent public appearances, Philip developed a reputation for being impatient and demanding and was sometimes blunt to the point of rudeness.

Many Britons appreciated what they saw as his propensity to speak his mind, while others criticized behavior they labeled as racist, sexist or out of touch.

In 1995, for example, he asked a Scottish driving instructor, “How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to pass the test?” Seven years later in Australia, when visiting Aboriginal people with the queen, he asked: “Do you still throw spears at each other?” On one visit to a military barracks, he asked a sea cadet instructor if she worked in a strip club.

Many believe his propensity to speak his mind meant he provided needed, unvarnished advice to the queen.

“The way that he survived in the British monarchy system was to be his own man, and that was a source of support to the queen,” said royal historian Robert Lacey. “All her life she was surrounded by men who said, ‘yes ma’am,’ and he was one man who always told her how it really was, or at least how he saw it.”

Lacey said that during the royal family’s difficult times with Diana, Philip spoke for the family with authority, showing that he did not automatically defer to the queen despite her position as monarch and head of state.

Philip’s relationship with Diana became complicated as her separation from Charles and their eventual divorce played out in a series of public battles that damaged the monarchy’s standing. It was widely assumed that he was critical of Diana’s use of broadcast interviews, including to accuse Charles of infidelity.

But letters between Philip and Diana released after her death showed that the older man was at times supportive of his daughter-in-law.

After Diana’s death in a car crash in Paris in 1997, Philip had to endure allegations by former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed that he had plotted the princess’s death. Al Fayed’s son, Dodi, also died in the crash.

During a lengthy inquest into their deaths, a senior judge acting as coroner instructed the jury that there was no evidence to support the allegations against Philip, who did not publicly respond to Al Fayed’s charges.

Philip’s final years were clouded by controversy and fissures in the royal family.

His third child, Prince Andrew, was embroiled in controversy over his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, an American financier who died in a New York prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

U.S. authorities accused Andrew of rebuffing their request to interview him as a witness, and Andrew faced accusations from a woman who said that she had several sexual encounters with the prince at Epstein’s behest. He denied the claim but withdrew from public royal duties amid the scandal.

At the start of 2020, Philip’s grandson Prince Harry and his wife, the American former actress Meghan Markle, announced they were quitting royal duties and moving to North America to escape intense media scrutiny that they found unbearable.

Last month, they gave an explosive interview to Oprah Winfrey, saying that Meghan had suffered neglect and racist attitudes while a working member of the family, though Winfrey later said Harry told her one particularly hurtful remark did not come from either of his grandparents. The palace called the issues raised by the couple “concerning” and said they would be “addressed by the family privately.”

Born June 10, 1921, on the dining room table at his parents’ home on the Greek island of Corfu, Philip was the fifth child and only son of Prince Andrew, younger brother of the king of Greece. His grandfather had come from Denmark during the 1860s to be adopted by Greece as the country’s monarch.

Philip’s mother was Princess Alice of Battenberg, a descendant of German princes. Like his future wife, Elizabeth, Philip was also a great-great-grandchild of Queen Victoria.

When Philip was 18 months old, his parents fled into exile in France. His father, an army commander, had been tried after a devastating military defeat by the Turks. After British intervention, the Greek junta agreed not to sentence Andrew to death if he left the country.

Philip went to school in Britain and entered Dartmouth Naval College as a cadet in 1939. He got his first posting in 1940 but was not allowed near the main war zone because he was a foreign prince of a neutral nation. When the Italian invasion of Greece ended that neutrality, he joined the war, serving on battleships in the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean and the Pacific.

On leave in Britain, he visited his royal cousins and, by the end of war, it was clear he was courting Princess Elizabeth, eldest child and heir of King George VI. Their engagement was announced July 10, 1947, and they were married Nov. 20.

Then, in 1952, King George VI died of cancer at age 56.

Philip had to give up his naval career and his subservient status was formally sealed at the coronation, when he knelt before his wife and pledged to become “her liege man of life and limb, and of earthly worship.”

The change in Philip’s life was dramatic.

“Within the house, and whatever we did, it was together,” Philip told biographer Basil Boothroyd of the years before Elizabeth became queen. “People used to come to me and ask me what to do. In 1952, the whole thing changed, very, very considerably.”

Said Boothroyd: “He had a choice between just tagging along, the second handshake in the receiving line, or finding other outlets for his bursting energies.”

So Philip took over management of the royal estates and expanded his travels to all corners of the world, building a role for himself.

Since 1956 he had been Patron and Chairman of Trustees for the largest youth activity program in Britain, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, a voluntary, non-competitive program of practical, cultural and adventurous activities for young people that exists in over 100 countries worldwide.

He painted, collected modern art, was interested in industrial design and planned a garden at Windsor Castle. But, he once said, “the arts world thinks of me as an uncultured, polo-playing clot.”

In time, the famous blond hair thinned and the long, fine-boned face acquired a few lines. He gave up polo but remained trim and vigorous.

To a friend’s suggestion that he ease up a bit, the prince is said to have replied, “Well, what would I do? Sit around and knit?”

But when he turned 90 in 2011, Philip told the BBC he was “winding down” his workload and he reckoned he had “done my bit.”

The next few years saw occasional hospital stays as Philip’s health flagged. He announced in May 2017 that he planned to step back from royal duties — after roughly 22,000 royal engagements since his wife’s coronation.

Philip is survived by the queen and their four children as well as eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Lamond Campbell (Brother): Lamond is a star football player and will hopefully go to school on that. He struggles with his grades at times, and Simone will walk him through problems while she is grading papers at night.

Isaac Baker (Ex-Boyfriend): She met Isaac where she seems to meet everyone; Anonymous. He’s friends with both of her bosses, which should have been a red flag in itself. They got along well, he was funny and charming and good in bed, but she could not deal with the comments about her friends or his jealousy. He gives her a large clearance, but she doesn’t really feel that much ill will towards him.

Platonic Connections:

Eric Lasiter (Classmate): Simone actually feels the most comfortable with Eric in class. He doesn’t try to make much small talk and keeps everything focused on the discussion in class. She was surprised to see him studying with Ashley especially since it appears they know each other well.

Ashley Malone (Classmate): There is something about Ashley that she finds off putting. They often pick opposite sides when it comes to discussion which has led to heated conversations. She’s always been fine to her in class, but since they are both competitive and know they’re the top students in the class, Simone doesn’t see them being very close anytime.

Anya Grace (Classmate): Anya is her only normal classmate. She has no time for BS and is a hard worker. She can see that Anya cares about her degree and has to work just as hard as she does for it.

Austin Semler (Classmate): She’s not sure how she continues to be partnered with Austin. He’s still very much into the gossip and drama surrounding college life that she just is not into. It’s led to some awkward conversations and tense study sessions. She thinks a part of it is that he doesn’t appear to have a real job, while she’s working as many shifts as she can to pay for everything.

Tom Mills (Student): Tom has been coming to Simone for tutoring and extra help with his social work class. As a T.A. she’s been letting him stay after class to get his work done and avoid any 2 AM emails from the undergrad.

Duke Thornton (Boss): Duke was the person she initially interviewed with. He’s got a very good poker face, so she was surprised at the call back. Duke does most of the scheduling and is always flexible with hours when she needs to study or work later at the university.

Peter Knox (Boss): While Peter and Duke are both at Anonymous frequently, Peter is on the floor more often during the rush. He’s willing to serve and bartend, anything to make sure the restaurant runs smoothly.

Josie de la Rosa (Friend): They met at Anonymous and quickly discovered that they both enjoy being active. They’ve gone swimming and kickboxing together, and she’s hoping to have a free night to join Josie at a salsa dancing class.

Selene Andris (Coworker): Selene is her favorite bartender to work with that isn’t Duke or Peter. She has a good attitude and doesn’t get stressed at large orders. She also understands a lot of the struggles that Selene is going through as a returning student and they vent about it to one another.

Matthew William-Jones (Coworker): Matthew usually buses tables, but he’s been asking her to teach him how to carry multiple plates and take orders. During slow times she’ll have him help her carry out her food and practice.

Juliette Willott (Friend): Simone met Juliette at Anonymous during a shift. Initially she thought she may have been flirting with her, but as they talked it turned out she was just being friendly and they had a lot in common. Her hanging out with Juliette caused one of the biggest fights between her and Isaac and was a partial cause of their break up.

Marni Frazier (Friend): Simone met Marnie while doing field work for her masters. She was volunteering at the same clinic and they clicked. Interestingly enough, they didn’t realize they’d met at Anonymous before. Now they regularly hang out on and off shift.

Garrett Cleirigh (Coworker): Sometimes Simone shows up to her shift and Garrett’s behind the bar. He’s never actually on the schedule, and Peter and Duke just look resigned when they see him. He makes the drinks, however, so she hasn’t questioned it.

Hostile Connections:

Hanna Moore (Uncomfortable): She’s asked some weird questions about her bosses, and Simone steers clear from her. Simone’s worked enough jobs to know not to say anything that isn’t common knowledge to a customer.

Chris Shaw (Dislikes): It seems like Chris is constantly hitting on a new girl and constantly striking out. And then he wants to complain to her. She wishes the guy would get laid and leave her alone.

More random OC facts: Tamett

Began his job as companion to Josiah when he was seven. Spent the first few days at the palace silent and confused because everyone was wearing black and Josiah refused to have much to do with him and got angry when he tried to be funny (something Tamett’s sisters never did).

Had an aimless but persistent interest in insect-collecting when he was younger. Live insects. Kept them in his room until they got out of hand and he got in trouble for ruining the essential pristineness of Konigshaus Palace. Still feels a vague affection for any insect he encounters indoors there.

Furthermore, since no one else goes into his room except to clean, has dared to make the place as homelike as possible. Postcards of Norriber pinned up everywhere. Blankets in distinctive patterns, knitted by his sister Emenor. There’s even a little Norriberrian flag on the wall.

Enjoyed the athletics lessons he had with Josiah when they began their education--a little too much.Turned out to be better at it than Josiah, and thus the emphasis on these lessons dwindled until they became optional (Odren was less of a stickler then for personal reasons, and Josiah got away with a lot). Nevertheless, still shows up for matches or races or sparring with the athletics instructor most days. It’s an escape.

Does some pretty realistic animal impressions, most notably a frog, which he brings out to liven up especially interminable lessons.

Took apart one of Ayra’s watches once from a combination of curiosity and mischief--and she promptly reassembled it as if that were nothing, rolled her eyes at him, and told him he’d have to try harder. They’ve been aloof friends ever since.

A surprisingly controversial figure at the Liennese court, although he’s unaware of it. Some of the nobility strongly disapprove of allowing the Heir to the throne, the Hope of Lienne, to mingle with a child from a territory, duke’s nephew or not. Just think of the dreadful accent and customs he might pick up! But others argue that Tamett’s place is a prime opportunity to better assimilate him into Liennese ways and experience direct subservience to the royal family, so that he will grow up to be a more obedient subject.

Is allowed to go home for an extended time in the summer while the royal family is on holiday and gets to spend his one hundred and four days of vacation (or however long it is) practically living outdoors. He and his sisters are slowly building a treehouse.

Fairly ambivalent to both parents, but closer to his mother, who has always made more sense to him. His father and much of the extended family can be so puzzlingly dramatic sometimes.

Got fed up with Josiah’s nonsense once and spent an entire day passive-aggressively ignoring him and refusing to respond to orders. Josiah immediately reported this to his father, who had Tamett’s supervisor, Lord Protzmann, severely reprimand him and sent for Tamett’s parents and uncle to come to the palace for the express purpose of scolding him further. He got the message.

Greensboro NC is located in the eastern portion of North Carolina. It has long been one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the state. As of the 2020 census, Greensboro NC was among the six fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the U.S. It is home to many colleges and universities, including the historically black Forsyth Technical Institute.

Greensboro NC is home to many unique landmarks. For example, the Greensboro Zoo, founded in 1867, is considered one of the country's premier zoos. The zoo features thousands of animals, including the Carolina Parakeet and the Great Basin Turtle. Greenville Avenue, which runs between Forsyth Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, is considered one of the most historic roads in the U.S. The famous "Greensboro Pike" runs through the center of the city.

Chapter 11: I Know

The clock struck two o’clock in the Supreme Commander’s meeting room, and as if on queue, the latter called a close to the assembly. The handful of high-ranking officers saluted their Supreme Commander before leaving the meeting. Erwin followed in the steps of his superior as he stood from his seat, a disgruntled look plastered on the commander’s face. Their request for additional funding had just been denied, and the Scouts had no other choice but to indeed throw a sponsoring event with what was left of their budget. This left a bitter taste in Shadis’ mouth.

“Get in touch with Duke Lichtwark; he owes me, and he’ll be able to reserve the venue. Ask him to have it ready for the end of the week. Then leave it to his wife to plan the event. After all, I doubt you joined the military to plan idiotic parties.” As they exited the meeting room, Shadis and Erwin walked together, and the commander grumbled his instructions in indignation to his right-hand man.

“And for Maria’s sake, if he asks you what colour tapered candles I want, shove the egg shell ones up his ass, would you?”

Erwin permitted a crooked smile at his commander’s misfortune and the absurdity of it all. “Yes, sir.”

Shadis, off to his next meeting in the capital, parted ways with Erwin. The blond officer steadily made his way through the immaculate halls of the military capital’s HQ, his dexterous fingers curled around a file of documents, until he spotted an unpleasant character in the adjacent hallway from him. Assertive and unwavering, Erwin’s strides never faltered as he faced the unavoidable. His fingers unwittingly pinched into the papers.

“Good afternoon, brigadier general.” The blond stopped to greet his superior out of duty.

Markus turned his head. “‘Afternoon, Erwin!” Markus replied cheerfully, and he dismissed his assistant. Left alone with the scout, the general requested to accompany Erwin, and the two men began their walk down the marble corridor.

Charismatic as always, Markus broke their silence. “So, what do you think? I didn’t know the military police and scouts were in the habit of organising parties for those pot-bellied nobles. Perhaps we should officially make it a bi-monthly event.”

Erwin answered, his eyes fixed on the walk ahead. “I can’t say I’m a fan of them myself, sir.”

“Do you think your engineers will come?”

“I'm sure they will.”

“And you'll come too, I hope. I know Ms. Reichart would like you to be there.”

Erwin paused. “I’ve no choice but to make an appearance.”

Markus hummed to himself, his eyes looking to the ceiling in thought. “I wonder what I’ll wear… Is there a knot that’s particularly fashionable these days?”

“You're asking the wrong man, general.” The blond monotonously retorted.

“What about women? Does a woman keep her promise?”

Thrown, the blond raised an eyebrow and turned his head towards Markus. “Sir?”

“Oh, you don’t know? I asked Ms. Reichart to marry me.” The man tilted his head to drink in any reaction from the scout, his lips donning a seemingly genuine smile. The malicious glint in his eyes — that only someone like Erwin could’ve noticed —betrayed his honesty.

Erwin felt his heart stop, but he refused to look at anything but what was in front of him; he wouldn’t let his reaction fuel the brigadier’s insidious remarks.

Markus continued to eye the blond, and when he elicited no visible reaction from him, he simply looked away and continued. “I’m waiting for her answer. Do you think she’ll say yes?””

“Once again, I’m—”

“Please, you seem to know her well. Help me out.”

Erwin paused for a long time, the clicking of their boots the only sound in the hallway. Reluctantly, he answered. “I suppose if it's not inconvenient to her.”

Markus let out an amused laugh. “Smith, you've become quite cynical lately.”

“Pardon my impertinence, sir, but I would rather not discuss personal matters of these sorts.”

“Very well,” The two officers reached the HQ’s exit and found themselves before a large outdoor staircase descending to the main street level. “I just wanted to tell you in advance, Smith, because I believe I know your secret.”

Something about Markus’ tone obliged Erwin to stop. The men turned to face each other, emerald meeting sky blue, and Erwin realised that all signs of facetiousness had dissolved from Markus’ aristocratic face. His green eyes mocked him.

“I’ve seen you together. The way you speak to her. And watch her. And look after her. I know her profound affection for you,” The blond’s unfaltering gaze parried the ominous glare as the air thickened around them. For what seemed like eternity, the men stood at the top of the stairs in silence.

Finally, Markus interrupted their tension when a grin broke out onto his face. He patted Erwin’s shoulder nonchalantly and laughed. “But you've behaved like a man, and as an honourable rival. I’m profoundly grateful.”

Cooly armed with a diplomatic quip, Erwin thought about replying, but they were interrupted by a sheepish soldier.

“General Schoenberg,” Markus turned to face his subordinate. “The commander would like a word, sir.”

Unruffled, the general bid Erwin goodbye with an easy smile. Quietly exhaling the breath he hadn’t realised he was holding in, he watched Markus disappear back into the building with the soldier.

Strolling down the stairs and flagging down a coach to return to HQ, he unclenched his fingers from the papers in his hand. The pages were bitterly warped.

Wilhelm was sitting at the desk in his living room that faced the casement window when he saw his daughter walk by in the street. Putting his pen down and taking off his glasses, he stood as the front door opened.

“Hello, father.” Lyor greeted him with a smile when she spotted him walking towards her.

She slid off her coat as they exchanged a kiss on the cheek, and Wilhelm noticed something different about her: her formerly long, ash brown hair had been cut into a bob that barely touched her shoulders. He also noticed the grim rings of grey haloing under her eyes. Not being one to vocalise these changes, the greying man returned to his desk but didn’t sit. He straightened his stacks of papers and books to put away. Despite his concern over her apparent exhaustion, Wilhelm was happy to see his daughter. He turned his head to her.

“It’s nice to see you, half-pint.”

They both exchanged a laugh at the old nickname, and Wilhelm began to organise his books onto the bookshelf beside his desk. After hanging her coat, Lyor’s lingering smile was interrupted when she noticed the now second damaged window in her father’s home.

“Father, why are the windows broken?”

“Just kids being kids.” Without hesitating, he continued to put away his books.

Her brows knit; she knew he was lying. “Kids broke two different sets of windows on either side of the house?”

Wilhelm replied with a thoughtful hum in affirmation, and took a stack of papers and quietly sat at the kitchen table a few steps from the living room. Lyor followed and sat across from him, her eyes perceptive as he flipped through some papers. “If I didn’t know you any better, I’d say you were hiding something.”

Wilhelm glanced up at his daughter from the papers he was organising. “Seems to run in the family, doesn’t it?”

Lyor searched her father’s sagacious gaze for the meaning behind his words. Afraid he would somehow figure something out if he looked at her long enough, she tore her eyes away. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You spend night and day at work. You haven’t been home in two weeks,—”

Lyor cut him off without hesitation, unyielding. “Heinrich is recovering. Someone needs to pick up the sla—”

“— you’ve been irritable and uncooperative; nothing anyone does at work is good enough for you. You snapped at Hanji, your direct superior might I remind you, whenever she showed interest in your progress—”

“I don’t like it when people interrupt me while I’m working.”

“And I don’t like it when people interrupt me when I’m speaking.”

She pulled back at his articulation, his steely tone bringing back unpleasant memories of being scolded. “Sorry.”

“Lyor, what’s going on?”

There was a long pause before Lyor looked away from him again. She spoke as if she was addressing a stranger in the empty living room; reluctant and toneless. “Do you know anything about brigadier general Schoenberg?”

Wilhelm tried to decipher the significance of her question, but found that between all of these turbulent events, his daughter had perfected that emotional veil of hers.

“The project supervisor? I can’t say that I do.” He replied as he sat back in his chair.

“He’s from the interior police, but you’ve never dealt with him before?”

“The interior police has a lot of officers.”

A cryptic silence fell between them after his matter-of-fact response, and he watched her drum her fingers on the table. After a few moments, she stood decisively from her spot and strolled to the kitchen counter where she filled a kettle.

“Would you like some tea?” She asked, dismissing their previous conversation.

Twisting around in his chair, he watched her seriously. “Why are you asking?”

“Because I’m making tea.”

Being accustomed to Lyor’s evasiveness when it came to discussing her problems, he managed to suppress an eye roll. “Your wit won’t work on me, half-pint.”

“It’s complicated.”

He couldn’t see her expression from the angle — not that it would have helped him much — but he recognised the edge in her voice. Wilhelm was a reoccurring witness to his daughter’s emotional compartmentalisation since her teen years, and he couldn’t be fooled by her ambiguity. He stood and joined her at the counter as she lit the stove, and gently placed his hand on her head. She looked at him curiously, and for a split second, he saw the same little girl that used to hold funerals for caterpillars.

The second passed, and he was left with the sight of a troubled young woman idly watching a kettle heat up.

“You’re making me nervous.” He admitted, but his daughter took his hand in hers and squeezed it. She extended him a reassuring smile.

“Don’t be; I simply don’t want to involve you. This is something I have to handle on my own.”

He watched her walk away before he could ask anymore questions. She traversed the kitchen and living room towards the stairs leading upstairs. “Watch the kettle, would you? I have to get dressed for the gala.”

“You’re really going?” He called after her.

She peered at him from in between the banister poles. “Hanji said if I didn’t get away from my desk, she’d solder my hands to it. Now that you’ve said I’ve been snapping at her, I don’t want to find out if she was joking or not.”

“Rick, you made it!” Rashad exclaimed from his seat as the broad man pulled out a chair from the squad’s assigned table.

“Don’t they ever think about scaling back a little?” He asked as he took a seat between Hanji and Kenji, gesturing at the ball room.

“They scaled back a lot. They cut two appetisers, cancelled the champagne fountain, and they reduced the catering staff to 21 servers not counting the point men.” Lyor replied, making room for Rick at their table.

Keiji took a swig of his whiskey. “Well, you can’t not have a point man ‘cause then what’s the point?” Tipsy, the group exploded into guffaws.

The immense ball room was full of bodies as the moon neared its halfway point, milling about or near collapse with flutes of champagne in hand and glasses of hard liquor. Some harassed the waitresses putting about, others puffed foul smelling cigars and tossed cards, chips and money on the tables circling the open area where people stood between themselves and acquaintances. These were the regular soldiers of the Scouting Legion and Military Police — dressed in their formal military attire and mingling amongst themselves — some swapping war stories, some discussing politics, and some, of course, playing drinking games.

It was comforting – how settled they were, how happy with just being. But they weren’t the main focus of the party. In the middle of the room, groups of men and women stood and chatted over their alcohol and hors d’oeuvres, while the attendees in the open space in front of the musicians danced gracefully to their serenades. They wore intricate dresses and suits; lace and glimmering jewellery. They were clean cut, their posture rigid and their expressions perfectly poised. From a glance, anyone would know these were not soldiers or heirs of poor families, posh bastards that they were.

Being here only for appearances, she watched the nobles from her spot, as they drank and talked in pretentious voices and haughty laughs – never glancing away from their circle yet always seeming aware. It was enthralling to see, in a place where looking through wool was a favoured state of mind, their eyes were opened – forcefully or otherwise – they lived without the delusions of the general populace. The higher ranking officers from the two military divisions mingled among the nobles, finding their place among them due to their ranks. Lyor spotted Shadis and a few familiar squad leaders amongst the nobles.

She forced herself to tune out the absurdity of the event after a while, sipping at the almost-empty glass of wine in her hand. She brought herself back to her squad, busy laughing and drinking amongst themselves at their table, occasionally forced to partake in inane conversation with passing nobles. They were no longer on their turf; they were in the noble world where not paying attention to your word choice could land you in the streets, stripped of rank. How obscene.

People feared Titans, called them monsters and fled from them like rats. She knew better, knew how monstrous humanity could be – how disgusting and vile. Titans were mindless, pathetic. Humans were premeditated; they could be manipulated, bought or threatened into committing atrocities that would make Titans look like child’s play. She pretended to not notice Markus between the crowd, schmoozing a group of lords.

Just as she lowered the glass from her lips, a voice spoke up from her behind her and Hanji, who sat beside her. “Ms. Zoe?”

The group turned to find a middle-aged woman standing across from them. She looked chummy, like a grandmother, dressed in a traditional dress, and a headpiece Lyor found to look slightly ridiculous.

“Mrs. Hamburg!” Hanji declared, pleasantly surprised. The squad leader shooed Rick out of his chair — muttering something about chivalry — and offered the seat to the older woman, two places down from Lyor. “It’s been a while! How’s your book store?”

“You haven’t seen it since we added a second floor, dear,” the lady replied. Lyor turned away from Hanji and the woman, resuming her previous conversation with her other coworkers. But she couldn’t help but eavesdrop when she heard his name. “Mr. Smith must have told you about it.”

“No, and that bastard never offers to pick up any books for me when he visits town!”

“Oh, he hasn’t visited since the fall, dear,” replied the older woman. “In fact, he bought a first edition Voltaire at that time. I’m not surprised that he hasn’t visited in a while — it cost a fortune!”

Lyor, who was not far from choking on her drink, widened her eyes at her words.

Hanji turned to raise an eyebrow at Lyor’s coughing fit.

The storeowner rambled to herself, “Yes, I’ve always wanted to ask him about it. He said it was a gift for his friend.”

From her spot amongst her coworkers, she had the perfect view of their commander’s right-hand man across the tables. That impenetrable man – taller than all the nobles he was speaking with – didn’t look particularly friendly. He wore expensive shoes, a brown, formal military vest with a matching waistcoat, and the angle he faced her cast a shadow over his gunmetal blue eyes – he was handsome, and he was cold, that Erwin Smith. Cold, but oh so charming. She could tell that his eyes were trying to see something else entirely as they scanned around the group of nobles he was speaking to. She smiled as she finished the last bit of her wine. He was always watching with a cunning eye; watching things beyond his area. And that was something she admired in a man.

Lyor leaned forward to address the older woman. “What was the name of the book?”

She blinked at the stranger but eventually replied, “Dictionnaire Philosophique.” Hanji eyed her friend suspiciously.

The brunette’s heart fluttered, and she suppressed the wily smirk that threatened to stretch on her face.

“I’m also curious to know what his friend thought of it. Why don’t we go ask him?”

“A-are you sure?”

Lyor stood, smoothing down her dress. She flashed a charismatic smile to the older woman, and charmed her into standing herself. “Yes, he’s a good friend of mine. Please, come.”

Baffled, Mrs. Hamburg nodded, bidding goodbye to her customer, and followed Lyor onto the floor.

Lyor watched Erwin catch their approach from the corner of his watchful eye, and he turned to the two women. She caught the slightest slip of surprise on his face before he replaced it with a diplomatic smile. He excused himself from the group of nobles, and the two women stood before him.

Though Erwin kept the observation of Lyor's shortened hair to himself, he noticed. He thought it rather suited her.

“Mr. Smith! It’s been a while. How are you?” The storeowner smiled delightfully as she spoke, plummy.

“Ah, Mrs. Hamburg. I’m well, thank you.” His voice was husky and accommodating, and Lyor eyed him with mischief at the piece of information she had just learned about him. Trying to contain her glee, she was bursting at the seams.

“Mrs. Hamburg came over here to ask you about the book you bought from her in the fall. What was the name of the book again, Mrs. Hamburg?” Lyor spoke, her voice silvery despite her thrill.

“Oh, that incredibly expensive first edition Voltaire for your lady friend. Did she enjoy the gift, sir?”

Lyor watched Erwin’s eyes slightly widen as he looked from Mrs. Hamburg to her, and it took all Lyor’s might to contain her laughter. In that instant, he looked like an innocent boy.

For the first time in weeks, her heart felt feather light.

Flummoxed, he seemed to struggle to form any words for a brief moment before the man finally pulled himself together. He locked eyes with Lyor, and she shot him a devious smirk. Amused, he managed a smile. “… I believe she did.”

Mrs. Hamburg let out a small squeal. “How wonderful! I would have been so disappointed for you if she hadn’t enjoyed it — it took me years to find such an impeccable edition.”

“Yes, in fact, she loved it so much that she refused to loan it to anyone.” With a pointed glance to the brunette, Erwin’s fruity voice risked sarcasm, but only Lyor caught on.

Lyor sheepishly offered a smile, guilty as charged. “Considering she definitely knew you bought it especially for her, certainly. If she did loan it, she would feel like an absolute cretin.”

Erwin’s smile grew. He exhaled, and he felt the tension in his shoulders release as he drank in the colour of her eyes. “I know.”

The conversation carried on for a few minutes, Mrs. Hamburg exchanging pleasantries with the officer and the young woman, before Mrs. Hamburg excused herself to find her husband — but not before falling for Erwin’s charm and promising she would convince her husband to sponsor the Legion. Thanking her, the two bid the storeowner goodbye, and were left alone amongst the sea of attendees.

“You look nice.” Erwin stated, and the two stood face to face, both of them cradling a flute of champagne in their hand.

“Yes, well, this is a really nice dress,” Lyor retorted before she returned his smile. “You’re freshly laundered.”

“It happens from time to time,” Entertained, the blond answered. “Are you enjoying yourself?”

Lyor repressed a sneer. “Actually, no, I’ve lost my cyanide capsule. Have you seen it?”

“I don’t suit this kind of affair either.” With a laugh, Erwin admitted, taking a sip of his drink as he eyed the crowd.

Lyor followed his gaze and sighed as they forlornly watched the sea of refined accoutrements. “I think it’s about time I say good night.”

“I wish I could go, too.”

Lyor’s skin prickled at the voice that came from behind them. “Oh, come now!”

Bitterly, the two turned to face the voice to see Markus approaching them: tall, provocative, and august. He seemed even more intimating than before, donning his formal military attire and a cunning smirk, drink in hand. Greeting him cordially, Lyor and Erwin were the epitome of diplomacy.

“Not before you’ve danced! Both of you. You two make a handsome couple,” Markus gave Erwin an amiable pat on the shoulder as he eyed Lyor. She couldn’t hide the forgery in her smile, but Erwin’s facade was impenetrable. “The next song is about to start; why don’t you two show me how well the Scouts dance? I insist.” He punctuated with a leer.

The deviousness spread to Markus’ eyes as the brunette and blond exchanged a meaningful but hesitant glance, until Erwin finally held out his hand. Lyor modestly placed her hand in his, and his touch was electric. Markus laughed heartily as the two of them smiled insincerely at the officer, walking away to the dance floor. With her hand tucked into his arm, Erwin and Lyor sifted through the crowd to the dance floor peppered with couples who bowed to each other when the song ended. She indulged in the opportunity to touch his arm, but she softly objected.

“Erwin, we don’t have to.”

“I’m not opposed to the idea.”

A new waltz began, and Lyor let go of his arm. When they faced each other, Erwin noticed the flush on her face. It was a time to see a woman redden who was not given to the reddening as a rule: not a point in the milkmaid but was of the deepest rose colour. In considerateness, he pretended not to notice and gently took her hand in his, and chastely snaked his other arm around her waist. He couldn’t ignore how incredible the indulgence of holding this woman in his arms was.

They fell in perfect synchronisation with the music and the other couples, but Lyor had trouble focusing. Her mind was hazy — their proximity and his scent intoxicated her: pine trees, leather and a subtle hint of cologne. All she could think about was the delightful burn of his touch on the small of her back, and the way his body towered over her own.

She compressed her lips to a demure impassivity, willing away any signs of bashfulness, and looked up at him. He smiled down at her when he felt her gaze — pure and penetrating — and an infatuated smile grew without thought on her lips. Blue eyes gazed into honey ones, and she felt as if they were the only two people who existed in that moment.

Lyor recalled the day they met, and she wondered what she had done to deserve that fateful encounter with a man as magnificent as him. She took in every detail of his features: the tenderness in his smile, his bushy eyebrows, sharp cheekbones, beaked nose, and the incredible strength in his gunmetal stare.

It suddenly became very clear to her that he was the only one for her.
