The case files of Jeweler Richard vol 8 spoiler
Part 4
(Actually, this wasn't really a part I particularly liked, but the piece I like is right after and if you don't know what happens here you won't understand so I will write about this as well!)
Tumblr media
The next day, Seigi goes to the market with Catherine, and after putting what they bought in the car, Seigi notice someone following them. While they are inside the moving car, a man with unkempt white hair crammed in a hunting cap, with overalls was running after them. Seigi tells Catherine that, and she looks behind and in the mirror but sees no one. Feeling strange they circle around again but don't see the old man.
Seigi "what was that?"
Catherine "Don't worry it happens sometimes. Rude people chasing after me. I'm just too beautiful"
Seigi tries to reassure her and say that if anything happens, he will deal with it, but Catherine says that she isn't worried.
Catherine acts as if the thing didn't affect her at all, but Seigi thinks about Richard in that moment, about how when he gets nervous, the rhythm of his speech and gesture would change slightly, and the places his gaze would settle on. He thinks that if the same goes for her, then she might be flustered right now and that she wouldn't like to let that show exactly like Richard. Seigi tactfully doesn't point that out. "Sorry, I just kind of got a feeling"
Catherine "You really are a kind boy, Seigi. Merci, Mon chevalier."
(Mother-son really are similar in many ways, even calling him their knight)
When they get back at the mansion, they find a note that said that Richard went to the library, Catherine tells him to not worry, and that he probably went by bike. As you will need a car to actually go to the place where you can rent a car....
Richard left a second note addressed to him in which he said that he finished searching the first floor for marbles, Seigi guesses that Richard made progress with the riddles and that his job now was to do the manual labor necessary to go about their daily lives. Catherine went to exercise her dragonfly acting or something she planned to show them. Seigi is thinking about preparing lamb for dinner, but since it was still early and he didn't know when Richard would be back, he went to the garden with a hand rake and ran in one of the rude neighbours, he think <maybe they came to invite for an aperitif again? Unfortunately, Catherine is busy at the moment>
Seigi "I'm sorry, the owner isn't available right now"
Rude woman "You paint walls?"
Seigi is shocked by the sudden question and doesn't understand for a moment, he thinks that they are struggling to communicate with each other again (they met again when buying things at the market, they were terribly rude and didn't even say hi to him 🙄)
Seigi asks again what does she wants, but she just reapeted again the question in French. Seigi got that she seemed to want him to paint some walls for her, though obviously didn't get why. <Why would she ask me that? Maybe she and her husband weren't native French speakers? > he wonders how to facilitate communication with them.
Rude woman "Can you come now? We'll pay you 30 euros an hour"
Seigi "Is it an emergency? I can help look up the number of a contractor for you"
The woman let out an annoyed-sounding groan. Seigi guesses that the important part was whether he'll come with her or not, but Seigi thinks he should ask Catherine first, so he goes back inside to call Catherine but she brushes him off and doesn't want to be disturbed, as he didn't know what to do he goes outside again and the neighbour ask him again a sudden question "Where do you live?"
"Me? Sri Lanka"
"Will you come for 40 euros? It won't take long"
Seigi grows even more confused and reason she might think of him as some kind of housekeeper? He thinks it's odd as how insistent she is on asking him to do menial labour, he try to think positively, like it will be a new experience...so why not? And goes with her. (It's in a moment like these, you can see how innocent he is....)
The woman came by car. They had a smaller villa with a pool. The couple exchanges some angry sounding shouts in a language he doesn't understand before the woman hands him a roller and a can of white paint. The man is painting blue the wall at the back.
Seigi "looks like a lot of work. Are you sure it wouldn't be better to hire some more people?"
Neighbour "You paint these walls"
Seigi "You mean the entire exterior?"
Neighbour "All of it"
He meant all the exterior walls, which was a huge area, Seigi knew that if you were to ask a professional, it wouldn't even be near 40 euros, let alone doing it in an hour. Seigi finally gets that they want to save money, he simply tell her that he'll do as much as he could but as he has other works to do at home, he'll leave after an hour.
Neighbour "Good" replies and goes back inside to help the husband. Seigi, in that moment, recalls how a friend told him that in an area he lives in where white rice grows during planting season, everyone would help as a group. He positively thinks about his situation as something similar to that and might become a funny story to tell at dinner later. He reason that painting isn't that hard as the windows were already taped, but he can't help but feel discouraged as it is really a huge area, once he finishes the first floor the woman come out with a stepladder to tell him to do the upper floor as well. It was 5 metres off the ground, and if he were to fall, he'd get seriously hurt as there was no safety line as well. But Seigi worries about this couple that were probably in their forties, so decide to do it himself. (He is too sweet for his own good...if it was me, I would've snapped already and told them to do it themselves, no I correct myself, I wouldn't even agree to paint walls)
Seigi thinks he already agreed to do the job and there is only 30 minutes left, so get on the ladder and start to paint but not long after he hears a squeak from the road, he sees Richard on the bike with sunglasses and striped shirt.
Richard already noticed him before Seigi could wave at him, he takes off his sunglasses and looked really shocked.
Seigi "Welcome back, I'm just helping out a bit and Catherine is in the house"
Richard "That's so dangerous! What are you doing up there?!"
Seigi can't explain from there, so start going down the ladder just as the woman comes out of the house.
Richard is furious, with anger Seigi never ever witnessed.
(The reason is now most obvious, but I'll continue in the next post heh heh angry Richard is always a beautiful Richard after all)

New Beginnings For Late Bloomers
Bucky Barnes x Reader
(Word Count: 2.4k)
Tumblr media
You answered the Wakandan prince and princess’ call almost immediately. You quietly and swiftly made your way from your room, taking the familiar route south to the lab.
King T’Chaka’s death was so recent that his presence was still very much felt around the palace. Everyone, of all ranks, collectively mourning the loss. As you passed through the halls, you thought of his children—you couldn’t imagine losing your father, especially in such a jarring way. You bristled before turning the corner, bracing yourself for whatever was on the other side.
A pale skinned, dark haired man appeared to be sleeping in a large tube. Beside it, Prince T’Challa and Princess Shuri were in deep conversation with another white man, this one blonde. He stood opposite them and face to face with you.
You weren’t one for rudeness, but you had never seen a white man in person before, and it was strange. You found yourself switching back and forth between the and his sleeping friend. The first and second white men you had seen up close. They both had white skin tinged with pink, and their hair really was bone straight. The blonde gave you a warm smile, maintaining a slight recline and dropped shoulders.
You weren’t very good at interrupting or with strangers; your shyness was a terrible hindrance, and it was a wonder you even had friends in the royal family. The stranger’s reaction saved you the trouble, causing both siblings to do the same. Immediately, your eyes drifted the man in the tube, lightly pressing your fingers on the glass.
T’Challa cleared his throat and gestured at the blonde, “Y/N, this is Captain Rogers.”
You nodded at him and followed his downward gaze––to the other white man. Because you were closer, you could see his breath fog up the glass in front of his nose.
“We need you to watch over Sergeant Barnes while he is within our borders,” Shuri said. Though he looked relatively peaceful, what this Sergeant Barnes was like when he was awake must be hard.
“Your daily tasks will be to tend to him.” T'Challa explained.
Your gaze softened when you glanced at Captain Rogers. His concern was plain to see, enough to make you muster up whatever courage you had to speak.
“I will do as I am asked. Sergeant Barnes will be well cared for during his time here.” You replied. You gave him a small smile.
The man nodded at your reassurance, and you excused yourself. You had a lot of work ahead of you.
The sound of giggling and shuffling feet took you out of your reverie.
You were greeted to the sight of children laughing and chasing each other on the river bank. You smiled at their antics, but had to shoo them away. They were playing outside of Sergeant Barnes’—erm, Bucky’s hut while he was sleeping. You noticed how little the man allowed his body to rest, and you did your best to prolong it.
You knew the kids had broken his sleep, so you entered his hut, anyway. As you expected, the man was on his back looking at you with heavy lidded eyes.
“Please, try and go back to sleep,” you whispered, averting your gaze.
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw him tilt his head back on his bed. You took the opportunity to light an incense on the outer edge of the hut while you went about your daily tasks. It was the one that usually lulled him back to sleep, but Bucky was wide awake.
You occupied yourself with menial work in an effort to ignore his eyes on you. You were taking out an old blanket but when you touched the other side, you felt a thick, runny liquid. The harsh smell of iron hit your nostrils almost immediately.
Blood.
“I had another one after you left.” A raspy voice called from behind you.
You quickly wrapped the blanket in your arms, doing your best to hide the sight. Bucky was sitting up; he may have been looking at you, but his eyes were much farther away. The color wasn’t familiar to you, but the distant sadness in them was. You could see fresh scratches poking out from his tunic and the slight grimace on his face.
Gently, you set the blanket back down and grabbed the tin of shea butter from your supply bag. You unscrewed the cap and scooped the product out. You made your way to his bed, sitting on your knees beside him.
You pulled the cloth down to reveal the familiar nub where his arm used to be.
“Your head therapy with Dr. Amari has been switched to Tuesdays and Thursdays, for now. Shuri needs time to grieve the king and the mind must come before the body, in your case. ” You said softly, applying the shea butter evenly and without fanfare.
Bucky was leaning away from you, but he nodded nonetheless. You never had to yell or shout to get his attention––he always heard you, no matter how quiet you were.
When you were done, Bucky offered you a tired smile, but you couldn’t return it. You felt your face get hot and averted your gaze. It was different when you had nothing more to do, and he was just staring at you.
“I will get you new bedding and clothing when I return.”
You darted out of the hut as fast as you could, only stopping to let out the breath you had been holding.
“I don’t know if your treatment is working, Shuri.”
The princess was busy working on a new project. With heavy protective goggles on, and a wicked grin, there was no telling what she was up to. Carefully, Shuri shut the lid on it, and spun towards you.
You held up the bloody fabric, and Shuri frowned.
“Ah, Y/N, Sergeant Barnes’ brain will take more work than his body.” She said, scanning the blanket.
“He claws at himself while he sleeps.” You replied. The memories of his episodes were so clear in your mind. For a man who was fairly quiet and calm, in those moments he was mechanical and unflinchingly cruel. It was the first time a cold feeling settled in the pit of your stomach and it was truly awful.
Shuri was periodically glancing up at you as she read Bucky’s file. The farther she read, the more the princess looked puzzled. She clicked her tongue, then suddenly clapped loudly. The sound made you jump.
“Shuri!” You hissed. The girl was bouncing on the balls of her feet, animatedly. An especially devious smirk made its way onto her face.
“He is from New York City, ah! The city where dreams are made of!” She sang. Her off key version made you cringe at first, but a smile soon replaced it.
The Wakandan princess’s bubbly mood was the thing you enjoyed most about her. She was always so excited to explore and plot anything she wanted; it was refreshing to see.
“Take Sergeant Barnes to the market! It is a city environment to remind him of home.” Shuri exclaimed wildly.
Your eyes widened in horror at her suggestion. Shuri lit up, her ideas kept coming.
“He needs you to go with him. It can be a date!” You nearly choked.
“Princess Shuri!” You cried out. It was actually more of a high pitched squeak.
You gazed down at the blanket. It’s rich brown color was tinged with a darker one. The sickly smell of blood—Bucky’s blood—still invaded your senses. Your job was to care for him while he was in your country’s custody.
You sighed and agreed.
Bucky knew something was wrong the second you found the blanket.
The slight downturn of your chin as the realization dawned on you—he should’ve buried it when he had the chance.
The scratches were deep this time, but Bucky healed fast. It had been just over eleven hours since they happened. He had since changed into new clothes, so as to spare you from seeing the gashes, but he didn’t have the tools to get rid of the blood on hand.
Bucky heard your approaching steps, and went out to greet you. It was the height of the late afternoon heat; the dark haired man could see you approach through the vapors.
He knew it had been a long time since he’d been around a woman as Bucky, not the Winter Soldier. That was the exact reason why he wasn’t used to how you looked then. Your deep brown skin glowed as you came closer. A gold armband sat on your upper left arm, shining in the sunlight. You had on a green two-piece, decorated in bright Wakandan prints.
Bucky missed his phantom limb during times like this. It meant he was still capable of being the smooth, confident guy from Brooklyn and not the mess he truly was. He shifted his weight, bracing himself for your arrival.
“Would you like to come with me to the market?” You asked.
You wouldn’t look up at him for more than a second, but you did sit near him during the escort over. On his left side, too.
Once you two made it to the market entrance, it was in full swing. Hundreds of people were mingling through the stalls. A woman was haggling a tailor for a shoddy job he’d done. The smell of spices and roots hung in the air.
You snuck a glance at Bucky, giggling at the curious stares he received. And what a strange sight he was—a very white man in Wakanda. It was unheard of.
“I was told you were from New York City. Manhattan?” You said.
Bucky turned to you, mildly offended.
“Brooklyn, doll. Real different.” He said. You watched him inhale, taking in the bustling vendors and patrons.
You put a slight pressure on his shoulder, leading him to a street show. The performance was fun and free as the drummers played their sing song rhythms. Even you felt the urge to sway your hips to the beat.
A crowd had gathered, stomping and clapping as they went along, growing more boisterous as the dancers went on. Lost in the moment, you failed to notice Bucky’s balled fists and his blank stare. The only reason you did, was because in the middle of your small dance, you bumped into a hard body. The way you bounced off of him jostled you back to reality.
You got him some water, pouring it on your hand and then on his forehead. The cold shock worked, but with it came those scared, disoriented eyes. Ordinarily, you wouldn’t try and steer the big man any direction. You never could, Bucky was just kind enough to oblige most times. This time, he seemed so splintered, he followed without protest.
You led Bucky into an empty alleyway.
“I’m sorry. Please, let me take you back.” You said, apologetically.
You thought it would help him, not this. You leaned back on the wall opposite to him, waiting for Bucky to decide what to do. Slowly, heavy breathing subsided and he lifted his head from the ground.
“I don’t want you to think I didn’t like it. I did. But the people and the sounds and the—I know I was raised in a big city, but it’s been a long time since then.” Bucky said, finally.
He met your concerned gaze and almost looked relieved. The man stood up to his full height in one swift motion.
“I don’t think I like them anymore.” He admitted in a low, gravelly voice.
Your heart sank at his omission. Bucky had no idea who he was anymore, or what made him happy. He needed some peace that didn’t come from his place at the river, that was too familiar.
“I know a place you might enjoy, but it will take time to get there.”
Bucky had complete faith in you, and nodded imperceptibly.
It was a quiet ride up the mound.
By now, it was nearing dusk. The sky was a vibrant mix of purples and oranges and reds. Bucky hadn’t spoken again, and you hadn’t pressed him.
“It’s an undeveloped hot spring, Prince T’Challa and I found it together as children. No one will bother us here.”
You stalked through the heavy foliage with a clear head, muscle memory guiding the way to the cave. You were very aware of Bucky’s silent presence behind you. He navigated the vegetation with ease, carrying the food and water in a basket.
You huffed just taking the towels and blanket, and he looked unfazed. The both of you finally reached the mouth of the cave as soon as the last rays of sunlight faded. You watched as Bucky’s face darkened in the dim light.
“There are lights on the far end, vibranium powered so they will last.” You said. Bucky had far better sight than you, and he successfully found and turned them on.
He pointed the bright light toward the cave ceiling, setting off a series of shadows and patterns above you. You smiled softly, satisfied with your work. Bucky was still shook up from the market, but once he stepped into the hot spring he physically seemed more comfortable.
“Don’t stay in too long, it could be dangerous,” you warned him. A blast of warm air hit you, and you laid down on the blanket.
“Got it.” Bucky replied.
Occasionally, you heard the sound of water sloshing around, but you were too lazy to turn your head. There was no one around for miles to interrupt the calm, so you finally closed your eyes.
You heard water streaming to the cave floor as Bucky drew nearer. You thought nothing of it, until you felt warm, sopping wet hands wrap around you. You gasped the intrusion—if you hadn’t known who it was you would’ve screamed.
Bucky pulled you into him. Your face rested on his bare chest, catching the heat emanating from his warm skin. You didn’t have time to freak out.
What he did next wasn’t quite like a cry. The noise was so soft you thought you misheard it at first. It was a strangled, ghost of a sob.
“I-I can’t stop saying I don’t know.”
Bucky clung to you, letting all of his frustration and pain roll off him in waves. You took your cheek off his chest, the warm water leaving your face hotter than normal.
You stopped Bucky before he could recoil—gripping his shoulder.
“Horrific things happened to you Bucky, and I am sorry for that,” you started, staring off at the hot spring behind him. Steam rolled off its surface and wafted upwards and into nothing.
“You are rebuilding yourself and that is alright.”
Bucky peered down at you with a hardened kind of fascination. His eyes raked over you and he broke out in a grateful smile. A true smile.
“Thank you.”
He paused as he regarded you, dropping his shoulders.
“Doll? Can I kiss you?” The request sent you toppling over on the inside. You swallowed hard.
“Why?” Your voice was small. It was the cost to stare Bucky in the eyes while you asked. He needed to see how dead serious you were. You could be fragile, too. You blinked rapidly in anticipation, trying to concentrate over the roar of blood rushing through your veins.
“You never asked me to be someone, now I can be someone else.”
Your jaw dropped. You mustered all the courage you had and met his lips. The kiss was hesitant and soft. There were no expectations, just a sweet moment for two people that needed more of them.

The Chase Files Daily Newscap 18/2/2020
Good Morning #realdreamchasers ! Here is your daily news cap for Tuesday 18th February, 2020. There is a lot to read and digest so take your time. Remember you can read full articles via Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS), Barbados Today (BT), or by purchasing a Daily Nation Newspaper (DN).
VAUXHALL IN, GRAYDON SEALY OUT –Students of Vauxhall Primary School will be back in the classroom today, but staff and students at Graydon Sealy Secondary School will be at home. Classes ground to a halt last Wednesday after parents and staff raised concerns about an infestation of rats, termites and cockroaches at the Christ Church primary school. Parents said their children were constantly ill and were out of classes for extended periods, while teachers complained of respiratory complications. After a walk-through by Parent-Teacher Association president Adrian Husbands, parents decided not to allow their children back in the classrooms until the issue was addressed by the Ministry of Education. Last Wednesday, Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw, Acting Chief Education Officer Joy Adamson and other ministry officials toured the compound for three hours and said classes would be closed for the rest of the week to allow for the start of refurbishment works, beginning with the female bathrooms, which would extend over the weekend. (DN)
MILLIONS DOWN DRAIN –The Barbados Water Authority (BWA) will be working around the clock to repair a 16-inch burst main at Searles/Woodbourne that apparently is the reason why customers in Christ Church and St Philip have been without water for the past three days. Described as one of the “worst burst mains”, engineers at the BWA unearthed the massive leak yesterday morning while carrying out an investigation of the entire system linked to the Hampton Pumping Station, to determine why the water levels had not returned to normal, following repairs to the pump last Thursday. Taking the media on a tour of the waterlogged area yesterday evening, Minister of Water Resources Wilfred Abrahams lamented that millions of gallons of water had already been lost before the leak was detected. As a result, he said management had taken a decision to shut off the water supply at 7:30 last night in order to give customers time to store water. However, he pointed out that it would take time to repair the main since the wooded area had to first be cleared of trees and bush, then the water which had created a large swamp had to be pumped off before work crews could access the main. “It is not going to be an easy fix,” the minister said as he warned that “to actually do the fix is going to cause significant disruption to service. It cannot be avoided”. (DN)
MORE WATER OUTAGES FOR CHRIST CHURCH & ST. PHILIP – Residents in Christ Church and parts of St Philip who were experiencing sporadic service will be without water for a few more days. Earlier today, a crew from the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) discovered a massive 16-inch burst main in the region of  Woodbourne/Searles, Christ Church. The magnitude of the leak created a huge swampy area, from which workers at the BWA will first have to clear wood and debris and then pump off the excess water before repairs can be effected. As a result, the water will be turned off at 7 p.m. today. Minister of Water Resources Management Wilfred Abrahams says they had a crisis meeting with management and the engineers and decided to explore every option because they could not understand why the levels were not returning. “Millions of gallons of water is being lost out here, but to actually do the fix will cause significant disruption for customers,” he said. Work started immediately and they are getting assistance from several companies. The BWA will put contingency plans in place, including sending out water tankers, but residents in those areas are being urged to do what they can to deal with their own situation. Some parts of St Philip and Christ Church have been without water for the last three days. Last Thursday, after a disruption in electrical power, the BWA suffered pumping equipment failure at Hampton, and later that night, one pump was repaired and another replaced. There was also a 10-inch burst the following night at Pilgrim Road, Christ Church, and it was repaired that same day. (DN)
ISOLATION CENTRE POSES NO RISK TO PUBLIC – The Ministry of Health and Wellness has assured schools, businesses and residents in the vicinity of the Isolation Centre at Enmore, Collymore Rock, St Michael, that the area remains safe. Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Kenneth George, was responding today to concerns raised by some members of the public after the Centre was identified as the facility where anyone arriving in Barbados with symptoms related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) would be placed in isolation and treated. Dr George explained that in the construction of the facility, which has been in place since the public health threat posed by Ebola in 2014, special emphasis was placed on safety and security. “There is a double filtration system that involves HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filtration, as well as UV (ultraviolet) filtration. These systems combined make sure that all the air emanating from the facility is safe.” He shared that the Centre had also been recognised by the Pan American Health Organization as being representative of “best practice”, and posed no risk to the public. The Chief Medical Officer emphasised: “This type of facility was so designed to not only treat Ebola, but also to treat any new and emerging respiratory viruses, such as COVID-19. “In addition, there are bio-security features which relate to the movement of staff and patients into and out of the building,” he assured. He said that the Ministry was committed to providing the public with up-to-date information on this public health challenge and to putting all necessary measures in place to protect residents. (BGIS)
MET OFFICE MONITORING SAHARA DUST MOVING INTO REGION – People with respiratory ailments are being asked to take precautions this week. The Barbados Meteorological Services is monitoring the progress of a thick concentration of Saharan dust haze located in the central Atlantic. The Model data indicates that the plume of dust haze is forecast to affect Barbados as early as Wednesday morning, with an improvement expected around Friday. Impacts will vary due to the sensitivity of individuals and extent of exposure. People with respiratory ailments such as asthma and sinusitis could be affected. Symptoms include irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, sneezing, wheezing and coughing. Precautions should be taken to reducing exposure to this dust. (PR/SAT)
DEMOLITION STARTS ON FIRE STATION IN THE CITY –Demolition of the Barbados Fire Service complex on Probyn Street, The City is underway. Work men started around 8:30 a.m., excavated a wall and demolished a small building in the yard. An official estimated that the main building would be taken down around noon.  To accommodate the work, traffic on Probyn Street has been reduced to a single lane, but all surroundings roads, including Fairchild Street are unaffected.  The removal of the station is the first stage of government’s plan to develop Golden Square Freedom Park. The temporary market and the old National Insurance Scheme building are also scheduled to be demolished. (DN)
PROBYN STREET NOW ONE LANE DURING DEMOLITION – As part of the demolition of the old National Insurance Scheme (NIS) building and the Bridgetown Fire Station, the Ministry of Transport Works and Maintenance will be making some changes to traffic flow. Workers will be removing the traffic signal mast arm from the Probyn Street section of the Fairchild Street/Bridge Street junction today. The other traffic signals at this junction will remain in operation. Motorists are advised to observe the directions and signage of the contractors and workmen on site and road users should also note that Probyn Street will be reduced to one lane only. The old NIS building, Fire Service headquarters and temporary market located along the street are being demolished to make way for the Golden Square Freedom Park. (DN)
COPS ‘IN HIGH GEAR’ ON MURDER CASES –There is a great chance police will soon crack another murder case, says Acting Commissioner of Police Erwin Boyce. During a press conference at the police headquarters in Roebuck Street, Bridgetown, yesterday, he said three out of five murders for 2020 had been solved as far as bringing charges. He added this was a testament to investigators who were relentless in their efforts. “We have never taken off our gloves in the fight of crime and we will never take off our gloves in the fight of crime. The ones that have not been solved are actively being pursued. In some instances, there is light at the end of the tunnel for some.  “Three were solved and the possibility exists that we might solve a fourth in a not too distant time,” Boyce said. In relation to the record 49 murders in 2019, the senior lawman said that 60 per cent of them had been solved, and once Barbadians continued to offer them support, police would be able to do their jobs. (DN)
PERFUME THEIF SEND FOR EVALUATION – The details of how a 57-year-old man made off with a $209.99 cologne belonging to a popular Broad Street store will be given in court in three weeks before his sentencing. But that is all based on what doctors at the Psychiatric Hospital have to say in a report requested by Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant, about Richard Carmichael Best, of no fixed place of abode. Best was sent to the Black Rock, St Michael institution after he appeared before the magistrate and pleaded guilty to stealing the item from Cave Shepherd on February 15. “I want to pay back in a week,” Best said before he was given a March 9 date to return before the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court. (BT)
DEPORTATION FOR WOMAN CAUGHT STEALING – Jamaican Marjorie AnnMarie Campbell is to be placed on the next available fight home. Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant today ordered that the 46-year-old babysitter who resided at Charles Rowe Bridge, St George be deported after she admitted to theft. Campbell, who had been in the country since February 2013 and was given a six-month stay but failed to regularise her status after it expired pleaded guilty to stealing a number of food items including, chicken, lamb, cheese, pigtails, salt fish and chocolate mix from Popular Discounts on February 15. They were valued at $129.40. She apologised for her actions in the No. 2 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court. Police prosecutor Victoria Taitt revealed that Campbell entered the store around 11 a.m. and was kept under observation by a security officer. She went through the aisles picking up the items as well as to the area of the meats. At one point she was seen putting some of the items in a green Popular Discounts reusable bag. The convicted woman then went to the cashier and paid for some items and when she tried to leave, a search was requested and the groceries that she had not paid for were found in the reusable bag and in another plastic bag. (BT)
ASSAULT CASE ADJOURNED UNTIL MAY – Teenager Keon Kenrico Waithe was granted bail today in connection with an offence against a female teen. The 17-year-old Waithe, of Bosvigo Gap, Eagle Hall, St Michael is accused of unlawfully and maliciously wounding Jammie-Ann McConney on February 15. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $1,000. Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant has ordered him to stay away from McConney until the matter is adjudicated. The case comes up again in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on May 11. In the meantime, the accused must report to the Black Rock Police Station every Wednesday by noon with valid identification. (BT)
BULLETS FOUND IN SOCK – When police executed a search warrant at the home of a St Joseph man in 2015 they discovered five rounds of ammunition under his mattress. Today, Kevin Jamar Parris, of Bissex Housing Area, pleaded guilty to the almost five-year-old charge, which occurred on August 26. Crown Counsel Rudolph Burnett told Justice Christopher Birch in Supreme Court No. 5A that lawmen ventured to Parris’ home around 6:25 a.m. After speaking to him and handing over the necessary documents they executed the search. The court heard that in a bedroom under a mattress was a green plastic bag containing a white sock in which there was another green plastic bag. In there was a Styrofoam crate with the illegal ammunition. “I went to a party at St John about two weeks ago and find them up there,” Parris allegedly told police at the time. However, when he was arrested and taken to the police station he denied possession of the bullets. A pre-sentencing report has been ordered on the first time offender who is being represented by attorneys-at-law Amilcar Branche and Sherise King. Parris remains on bail until April 27 when he returns to the High Court. (BT)
NOT DOING ENOUGH – Businesses and charitable organisations are still not doing enough to assist with the reintegration of ex-criminals into society, according to Home Affairs Minister Edmund Hinkson. As he addressed Sunday’s Prison After Care Committee’s Church service at a Nazarene congregation at Westmorland, St. James, Hinkson noted a large number of former prisoners are trapped in a cycle in which they end up behind bars just four years after their release. Citing an InterAmerican Development Bank (IADB) study conducted last year, Hinkson disclosed that 61 percent of the approximately 760 prisoners at Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) Dodds had already been in prison. The average time between their previous release and their current arrest, according to the study, is just 44 months and according to the Home Affairs Minister, the business community in particular has a massive role to play. “Coming out of Dodds, there’s a challenge with reintegration into our communities and their involvement in the socio-economic life of this country. The issue, as we said, is that a lot of employers don’t wish to give these people an opportunity and that therefore speaks directly to the issue of the police certificate of character and the Attorney General has stated this is an issue that we will have to take another look at,” Minister Hinkson acknowledged. But he stressed: “The problem is not one for the prisons or the Minister of Home Affairs or the Government. It is a problem for all of us in this society when these issues are our reality. The prison has done a fine job over the last five years for its programming for the reintegration and reformation of its prisoners including the expansion to those who are on remand.” Turning his attention to the aftercare committee, the Home Affairs Minister suggested the organisation’s role is critical in any attempt to strengthen the relationship between ex-convicts and the private sector. “We must look to strengthen the relationship between the private sector and the employers in this country, service organisations, community service organisations, the lions club of Barbados. We have to look to strengthen our links between these types of organisations and business organisations, as well as community service organisations in terms of giving everybody a stake in the rehabilitation and reform of those who have unfortunately come into conflict with the criminal justice system. Because we are all in this together,” Hinkson said. As part of government’s efforts to address the problem, the administration has extended its rehabilitation programmes to incarcerated persons who are on remand. He added that the recent appointment of five new judges and the hiring of judges to deal exclusively with criminal trials would assist in keeping innocent persons out of the system. Preventative measures he added could be found in Government push toward education reform along with initiatives like the youth advance scheme, the building blocks initiative, and the national training initiative. “Prisons can’t be looked at in a vacuum or in a unique situation. All of this is tied up in how we seek to programme and address our societal issues,” said Hinkson. (BT)
ST LUCIA ZOUKS SOLD TO INDIAN COMPANY – The St Lucia Zouks have been sold to a group of investors with extensive experience in high-profile cricket, says principals of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL). According to a media release issued today, K.P.H. Dream Cricket Private Limited is based in India and has “knowledgeable owners who have a track record of success on and off the field in major events. They will bring a huge amount of experience to the tournament and to the St Lucian team”. The Zouks have been part of the CPL since the league’s inception, making the playoffs during the 2016 season. They play their home games at the Daren Sammy International Cricket Ground, a stadium named after the man who has captained them for six of their seven seasons. Last year the Zouks team featured Sammy, Fawad Ahmed, Rahkeem Cornwall, Andre Fletcher, Colin de Grandhomme and Thisara Perera. Speaking about the purchase of the St Lucia Zouks, Mohit Burman of K.P.H. Dream Cricket Private Limited said: “We are excited at the opportunity to invest in one of the most exciting sporting tournaments in the world, and we have been impressed by the vibrancy of CPL over the last seven years. We visualise taking the franchise to the next level and showcasing St Lucia in the best possible light over the coming years.” Pete Russell, Chief Operating Officer of the Hero CPL, said: “We are hugely excited to welcome this ownership team to the CPL family and we are looking forward to seeing where they take the Zouks during the upcoming season and beyond. They bring with them a wealth of experience, which is fantastic news for both the CPL and St Lucia as a whole. During the 2019 tournament the CPL made a positive economic impact of US$13 670 260 in St Lucia and this new ownership group will be working hard to see this figure increase.” St Lucia’s Prime Minister Allen Chastenet welcomed the new owners amidst the hope “new energy and drive will inspire the team to excel”. He added: “Saint Lucians continue to root for the Zouks and we are encouraged by the confidence that Mr Mohit Burman and his team have placed in the players and Saint Lucia. The Government of Saint Lucia looks forward to working closely with the new owners to create a team we can all be proud of.” (DN)
AMAZON SAYS IT WILL START COLLECTING 17.5% VAT – After several false starts, the Mia-Mottley administration appears to have made a major breakthrough in a controversial bid to collect Value Added Tax (VAT) on online purchases from some major retailers. The “Amazon” tax as it has become known, is to be implemented next month according to multinational e-commerce giant, Amazon. The company on Monday informed customers that effective March 1, 2020, “Amazon World Service (AWS) would begin to charge Value Added Tax at a rate of 17.5% to Barbadian customers. The Seattle-based company detailed its intention in an email correspondence titled “Important Announcement” in which it noted that the new measures are consistent with tax legislation which came into effect on December 1, 2019. The company said that a tax compliant invoice would be issued to Barbadian customers from April 1 this year. The email was reportedly sent to all customers whose records indicate that their Billing Address or Contact Address is in Barbados. It explained to customers that the website calculates taxes based on the customer location, which is determined by Amazon’s Account Location hierarchy. To ensure compliance, Amazon has urged Barbadian residents whose accounts are not listed in Barbados, to update their details by visiting the Billing Address and Contact Address page of the AWS Billing Console. “Tax invoices will appear in the Bills page of the AWS Billing Console along with your anniversary and subscription summary invoices starting on April 1, 2020,” the email further explained. “If you receive your anniversary or subscription invoices via email today, you will also receive tax invoices via email starting on April 1, 2020,” it added. Barbados TODAY’s efforts to reach Minister in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs Ryan Straughn for a comment on the developments were unsuccessful. The measure known as the “Amazon tax”, announced during Prime Minister Mia Mottley’s June 2018 budget was initially to begin in October of that year but was shifted two months later to December 1 and then to December 15th. The following year, legislation was introduced to allow the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) to outsource tax-collecting powers to an online third-party and the measure was to be introduced by July 1. This also was unsuccessful. When first introduced, numerous businessmen including former Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) President, Eddy Abed praised the move for placing local retailers and wholesalers on a level playing field with their overseas counterparts. Smaller businesses, however, complained that the measures could cripple their chances of survival by significantly increasing their costs. Nevertheless, changes were made to the Value Added Tax Act last December adding further scrutiny to the VAT collection process. Shortly after, current BCCI president Trisha Tannis expressed concern about compliance from popular international online companies like Amazon, Wal-Mart, Alibaba. Amazon’s expression of an intent to comply therefore suggests a major breakthrough in the Government’s efforts to implement the tax. It is still unclear if other international retailers will follow suit. (BT)

The whimsical text tone of his Stark-issued phone pulls Peter kicking and screaming from a rare deep sleep, and his arm fumbles out of the warm down comforter to flop like a dead fish onto his nightstand. He reels the glowing screen toward his one cracked-open eye.
Johnny: Do you think Cap will wear his American Flag boxer-briefs to the funeral?
Peter types with one thumb. Absolutely. They’re his lucky underwear.
He tosses the phone on the sheets and rolls over, chasing sleep for a few more hours. He’s almost drifted off, wrapped up like a human burrito, when his traitorous brain finally breaks the surface. He grabs the phone again.
Wait. Who died?
*****
And that’s how Peter Parker finds himself standing in the queue of superheroes waiting to bid adieu to Deadpool, a man they all, at one point or another, claimed to despise.
Tony Stark is dressed in a seven thousand dollar slate-blue Armani jacket—likely tricked out with enough StarkTech to rival his Iron Man suit—but all the other’s are in full costume. The viewing line stretches out the doors of a funeral home that hasn’t been updated since the nineteen-eighties, and by the time Peter finally reaches the casket he wants to borrow one of Wade’s beloved katanas and carve a swath through the faux-mourners and dated decor.
The sickly-sweet scent of decomposing flowers and the squeaking of vinyl-coated chairs under heavy hero asses is giving Peter a throbbing headache.
In front of him, Wolverine leans over Deadpool’s recumbent body, muttering about the great frozen north in the sky while he stuffs a bottle of booze, a handgun, and an obscene number of knives between Deadpool’s red and black leathers and the white satin lining of the coffin. Peter steps forward, tapping Wolverine on the shoulder and almost earns an Adamantium claw through his chest.
“Sorry to cut your goodbye short, Logan, but do you think I could have a moment alone with him?”
The claws retract. “Yeah, sure kid. Of course. I wasn’t always nice to him, like you were, so I just wanted to give Wade a proper send off.”
Peter nods, even though it’s not true. He’s been plenty mean to Wade too, but at least that’s in the past. “He’ll definitely be…well equipped.”
He watches as Wolverine walks away, pulling a flask out of his yellow suit. When Peter is sure Logan and the rest of the mourners are preoccupied, he steps up to the mahogany casket.
Deadpool is dressed in his red and black suit, minus the mask, which lies next to his pockmarked face on the pillow. Peter bends down, head bowed, and murmurs against the deformed shell of Deadpool’s ear, “Now listen, I know you’re not dead.”
Wade missed his calling as a ventriloquist because Peter swears his lips never move when he whispers back, “Yeah, no shit.”
*****
“You’re not leaving, are you?” Tony’s hand against his chest stops Peter’s momentum toward the exit. “You should deliver the eulogy, Spiderman. You knew him best.”
“Yeah, no, I think… I don’t...that’s a terrible—“
“Nonsense!” Tony leads Peter back toward the casket, next to which the funeral director places a podium. “Knock em dead, er, I mean, I’m sure you’ll do a great job. You’re a natural orator.” That’s Tony’s polite way of saying Peter talks a lot of shit.
“But Mr. Stark, I’ve never given a eulogy before! I have no idea what I’m supposed to say.”
“Tell us something nice about him. Tell us why we should remember him.” Tony shoos him toward the lectern at the foot of the coffin like he’s herding a skittish animal, and takes his seat in the audience.
Peter grips the edge of the wooden stand so tightly it cracks. The funeral director gives him the stink eye. He probably read the Daily Bugle.
Oh god oh god oh god what do I say?
“Uh, good afternoon, everyone. I’m Spiderman, and I guess…” In the front row sits Captain America, nodding encouragingly at him, while Johnny Storm grins and gives Peter the finger from the back of the room. He pauses, restarts with more conviction. “I’m Deadpool’s best friend.”
A hundred spectators lock eyes on Spiderman, but Peter can’t keep help looking to Wade’s still form.
There could be a million reasons why Deadpool, immortal mercenary, has faked his death. Maybe he needs protection. Maybe he’s bored and wants to pull a prank on everyone. Whatever the reason, as Peter stands in front of his superhuman peers, he realizes the entire ordeal has taught him a valuable lesson.
The spandex Spiderman suit leaves no breathing room for fear, but as he swung here, his disbelief ebbing and flowing with each catch and release of his web, Peter found he was scared. It can’t be true. Thwip. What if it is? Thwip. No. Wade can’t die. Thwip. What if he doesn’t come back this time? Thwip. I don’t want to be without him.
“Years ago, Wade Wilson—a mercenary, an ex-soldier, a man dying from cancer—walked into a genetic research facility, and Deadpool walked out. For better or for worse—and for too long I mistakenly believed it was worse—Deadpool came to New York City. He came for me.”
Peter looks out at a room full of colorful costumes and conflicted faces. “He came for all of us; to learn, to change. There are people sitting in this room who hate Deadpool, and always will. There are people here who’ve grown to respect him, to work side-by-side with him, to trust him. I thought I’d always be the former, but I’m the latter.”
Fear’s a hell of a teacher, but Peter’s not scared anymore.
“If there’s one thing I’d want anyone to know about Deadpool, it’s this: Weapon X didn’t create a monster-” Peter smiles- “They unwittingly made a hero. And I’m kind of in love with him.”
Deadpool sits straight up in his coffin, and a dozen of Earth’s mightiest heroes scream like little kids. “You know I’ve actually died fifty-six times in your presence over the years. Where was this heartfelt profession before?”
Peter climbs into the casket and kisses Wade full on the mouth.
*****
“Nice speech, Spiderman,” Johnny says as everyone files out of the funeral home. Wade, with one arm flung over Peter’s shoulder, gives him a quick squeeze. “But I’m kind of pissed we never found out if Captain America was sporting a star-spangled ass.”
Peter shakes his head. “I can say with one hundred percent certainty, he is not.”
Johnny and Wade wear matching skeptical expressions, so Peter pulls the waist of his spandex pants away from his body. “I made a pit-stop on my way here.”
“Now that’s a patriotic dick.” Wade whistles.
Johnny laughs so hard he cries. “Why the hell did you steal Captain America’s underwear?”
Peter looks at Wade, and feels pretty damn lucky.
He may never give them back.

A Courier’s Journey
Ch.6
As Courier Six walked the road to Novac listening to Mr. New Vegas making announcements about something or another, something inside her just didn’t feel right. She was tired of being treated like a piece of meat, looked at as if they were free for the taking. All these damn men can’t keep their eyes to themselves. After the way that man in the dog head looked at her, she felt gross. Just thinking about his voice made her skin crawl, and her stomach feel nauseous.
The sun had fully risen as she reached the gates of Novac and everything thing seemed to be looking up. She looked at the tiny town with hope and slight fear, something seemed off about it maybe even a bit eery. As she walked up to the gate she noticed a family shade of blue just behind the town sign. It was Victor. What the hell? Is he following me? She didn’t know what to make of it. She knew she couldn’t trust him but there was no real reason to be rude but she had every reason to be cautious. “Victor?” She approached slowly “Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit, if it ain’t my old friend from Goodsprings!” She raised an eyebrow while crossing her arms “What are you doing in Novac? Are you following me?” He beeped a little and shook his arms “Don’t rightly know. I just got the notion to make my way to New Vegas. Reckon I’ll find out when I get there.” She knew he would avoid the her last question but did he really not know?
She felt a little betrayed. This was the robot that saved her life or what was left of it. Why was he following her? Was he lying this whole time? “Quite a coincidence us meeting like this.” She tapped her foot on the floor a little as she grew more anxious “Seeing as how this is the only road around, I’d be a sight more surprised if we didn’t run into each other from time to time.” She fidgeted with her hands as she looked down at her feet “Its nice to see a friendly face out here I guess.” He beeped again processing her words “Likewise friend! If your ever in New Vegas look your old pal up!” She nodded and headed her way to the front office. Can’t let him catch onto me. Better get inside quick.
As she entered she shut the door behind her. Looking around it seemed pretty simple, small advertising posters from pre-war, filing cabinet, front desk, and a old women sweeping in the middle of if. As soon as she noticed the Courier her eyes lit up but the vibe she gave Six was off. “Well. Welcome to you. You look tired from the road. Why don’t you relax a spell, let this fine town take care of you?” Maybe it was the way she said it but from the moment she walked in she felt on edge. “I’m looking for a man in a checkered coat. Have you seen anyone like that?” The women stopped sweeping and nodded curtly “Well he might have been wearing a fancy outfit, but he wasn’t any kind of gentleman to me.” She patted her broom on the ground in a fit “Had his nose stuck so high in the air, you couldn’t see it above the clouds. City folks, they always think they deserve better then what they got.” She signed and swept a little “Those hoodlums he was with seemed to know Manny for some reason. He’s our daily sniper, up in the dinosaur mouth.” Six nodded “I’d like to rent a room if possible.” The women’s eyes lit up and she smiled brightly “Alrighty! It’s 150 caps, It’ll be the first room on the top floor.” Six handed her the caps in exchange for the key and walked out feeling a bit burned out One step forward two steps back.
Six sighed as she dropped her pack off in her room. She wanted a nap, and some clean clothes, along with a new gun. “This rifle Sunny gave me isn’t going to last much longer.” She set it down near the couch in her new room. Everything had a light layer of dust on it but it was a nice room and at least she didn’t have to block the door with an old bookcase. She plopped down onto the old bed feeling slightly dizzy “Ah one of the many side affects of being shot in the head.” She ran her fingers along the stitches that traced the right side of her skull and then down to her eyelid “Who am I doing this for?” She got up and headed to the bathroom. Looking in the mirror was still a hard thing to face “Who are you?” She placed a hand on the old cracked mirror “Is this the right decision? What will I do once I catch up to him?” We kill him. The voice in her head suddenly sounded so clear and that scared her. “Is revenge really what I’m looking for? Or is it just answers?” Revenge. She probably sounded crazy and hell maybe she was but all she felt when she though of him, the man that shot her, that had thugs beat her, that killed whoever she used to be was anger. She hated him, she wanted to make him hurt the way he hurt her. She wanted him to feel the fear she felt when she was on her knees alone and helpless.
She looked down at her hands and felt the sting of the gash. She was so focused on getting her, on forgetting what happened at Nipton that she completely forgot about her hand. She took out a small pocket med kit she traded for some jet she found on a Powder Ganger. Taking out vodka, a needle, and some thread she cleaned her gash and sewed it back up then wrapped it carefully with a fresh bandage. “Guess I gotta go ask a sniper some questions.” She drank some nuka-cola and headed out to the dinosaur head.
Clif was an over good buy, he sold supplies in the dinosaur. His selection of goods were okay until she saw a specific gun that caught her eye “Excuse me...what kind of gun is that?” It was smaller and heavy but not too heavy. “Oh this is called That Gun. It’s a heavily modified pared down .223 pistol, it shoots 5.56 bullets and does some decent damage.” Her eyes marveled at it “How much?” He chuckled and held it in the air looking at it “Well normally it’s original price is 1000 caps but since you got a room here at the motel I’ll knock upon a hundred caps.” The hope in her eyes faded “Oh uh...I’m sorry I don’t have that much.” She traded some extra supplies she had and headed up.
The man that had his back to her was slightly built, a little taller then her, and seemed to be in deep focus “Uh excuse me?” His shoulders moved slightly and he turned around with a confused on his face “What’s going on man?” He asked crossing his arms “You must me Manny right? The lady at the front desk told me you might know a man I’m looking for. He was wearing a checkered suit.” Manny chuckled and rubbed his face downward “Sure I know him. What do you want with him?” Six sighed in relief a little “Well he...has something of mine.” Manny looked her up and down questioningly “Must be pretty important to be chasing him around like this.” Six nodded ecstatically “Well listen, I can definitely help you find him but I’ve got problems of my own. Maybe we can do a trade. You need my help. There’s something I need too.” She blinked a little but understood what he was saying “Well okay then, what do you need?” He went on to tell her that ghouls have been coming from an old repconn test site and he wanted her to clear it out. She groaned slightly knowing that this was going to be one hell of a job. “Guess I got my work cut out for me tomorrow.”

It seems like something new is starting in the "Star Wars Universe" every week and everything is very exciting. Right now I'm starting to do stuff for the new Boba Fett and Andor shows. I'm very fortunate and blessed in what I do. To think I'd ever sell a painting to George, let alone a couple of hundred paintings to him over the years and doing thousands of illustrations, that was probably the most rewarding thing. That was a unique feather in my cap that I never saw happening as an artist from Toledo, Ohio. Lucas was interested in buying the original painting from me. At the end of the day I got a phone call telling me that Mr. So I did a lithograph for the California Science Center that was sold at the exhibit for a few months.

Boba Fett has a pretty solid tie-in with Tatooine over the years so I thought why not pay a little homage to that and keep it warm and juicy and add a hint of that sky in there with the twin suns. On the second piece, I was at first going to do a white background, then I thought it would be cool to throw a couple of suns on there. I wanted it to be fun and universally appealing. It keeps a little mystery there without stretching the boundaries too far and going off on my own tangent. You know some stuff is going down but you're not quite sure exactly where the firefight is coming from or who he's blasting the flamethrower at. We know it's a chase and the Falcon is way back there in the background coming after their boy and all the bounty hunters are also, so I thought it would be more intriguing by keeping the opposing forces off-panel. Joseph Pappas Dead: Mark Hausknecht Suspect Found
Joseph Pappas, the former Texas constable wanted in the murder of respected Houston cardiologist Mark Hausknecht, has committed suicide and is dead, police say. Police previously announced that they suspected Joseph Pappas was the killer of Hausknecht, who was gunned down while riding his bicycle in broad daylight on his way to work. Pappas was also riding a bicycle when he turned around and fired at least twice at the doctor, killing him, police said. The slaying was mysterious because people said Hausknecht had no known enemies; however, police say they believe Pappas, who owned a realty at one point, carried a 20-year grudge against the prominent doctor after his mother died in surgery under Hausknecht’s care. “This is our suspect,” police said in announcing the death of Joseph Pappas. “This is our suspect.” Police say Joseph Pappas killed himself less than an hour ago. #KHOU11 pic.twitter.com/FoS4HqOgVG — Matt Dougherty (@MattKHOU) August 3, 2018 Here’s what you need to know: Pappas Was Wearing Body Armor When He Shot Himself, Police Say #BREAKING: Police say the suspect in the death of a prominent Houston doctor found dead this morning. Pappas had “put together an ‘extensive file’ on Dr. Mark Hausknecht before killing him and had a sheet of paper with other names on it,” CBS News reported. According to Fox26 reporter Sally McDonald, writing on Twitter, “The witness who saw Joseph Pappas works for the Houston Parks Board. He first saw him around 9:20AM near the JCC and believed he looked like the suspect in dr.’s murder. Minutes later he found a wallet Pappas dropped w/ ID in it.” At 9:21AM a call came in of an individual chasing a suspicious person. At 9:25 the caller said he was near the Jewish Community Center and that he believed the suspicious person was Joseph Pappas. — Sally MacDonald (@SallyMacFox26) August 3, 2018 McDonald also reported that it was possible the suspect had been camping while on the run. We believe there's a possibility Joseph Pappas was camping in the days since he was identified as the suspect in Dr. Mark Hausknecht's death. Pappas was found dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Found w/ a backpack and bullet proof vest under this shirt. @FOX26Houston — Sally MacDonald (@SallyMacFox26) August 3, 2018 Police feared Hausknecht might go out in a hail of gunfire, saying, “You don’t normally put on a bulletproof vest when you are thinking about committing suicide.” Hausknecht once treated former President George H.W. Bush. The suspect’s full name is Joseph James Pappas, and police said from the start that they believed he was suicidal. “He was a brilliant physician, and he’s touched a lot of lives,” Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said of the victim. The chief extended his condolences to the Hausknecht family. Of Pappas, Acevedo said before he was caught: “He’s considered to be armed and dangerous, and people should not try to deal with him directly…Evidence has been obtained that ties this man to this crime, and we believe that this absolutely is the killer of Dr. Hausknecht…He’s very dangerous, and we need to get him into custody.” According to Acevedo, police believe Pappas may have once been a constable years ago in Harris County, Texas. Later news reports confirmed Pappas had worked for years as a deputy constable in Texas. The Mother of Joseph Pappas Died Under Dr. Hausknecht’s Care 20 Years Ago, Police Say & Pappas Worked in Law Enforcement Police: Houston Dr. Mark Hausknecht killed by man whose mother died during surgery https://t.co/Hng0ThGm2Q pic.twitter.com/TYmmXXQ9Gj — David Cantu (@duckm4st3r) August 1, 2018 Houston police think the motive dates back 20 years, when the mother of Joseph Pappas died in the care of Mark Hausknecht. They allege that hardened into a “grudge” that never left and spiraled into murder. Acevedo said an arrest warrant was issued in the case against Joseph Pappas. “We said we believed he (Hausknecht) was targeted and indeed he was. One of the tips included the fact that the suspect’s mother was a patient of the doctor and died during surgery over 20 years ago,” the chief said. “So it appears this may have been a 20-year-old grudge that this man held.” Julia Pappas died in 1997. According to The New York Daily News, Pappas’s father died in 2010, and he also has a sister. Asked by a reporter if there were any other links between Hausknecht and Pappas, Acevedo repeated, “He (Hausknecht) operated on his mother 20 years ago and she died during surgery.” He added at another point in the news conference, “The only tie between the doc and him is that we have confirmed his mom died on the operating table…the doctor who’s the victim in this case operated on our suspect’s mom.” The chief did not indicate whether there was a trigger that set the suspect off more recently, but he said that multiple firearms were recovered. “I don’t know when he decided to do this, but I’m very familiar with how this murder was committed. And there was a lot of planning that went into this. There was a lot of planning and, sadly, some skill. The shots that he took, took some skill,”...

There may be a sharp correction or the bull may keep running. Whatever the result, security lies in high-quality largecaps that now only move slowly, rather than smallcaps that fly away. There is a bubble in small caps that will end badly for new retail investors chasing those small caps. Investors can book some gains and invest the money in fixed income securities and continue to invest in high quality largecaps in the IT, metals, pharmaceuticals, cement and FMCG sectors

The Chase Files Daily Newscap 1/16/2019
Good MORNING #realdreamchasers! Here is The Chase Files Daily News Cap for Wednesday 16thJanuary 2019. Remember you can read full articles for FREE via Barbados Today (BT) or Barbados Government Information Services (BGIS) OR by purchasing by purchasing a Midweek Nation Newspaper (MWN).
POLITICIANS WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR ACTIONS, SAYS PM – Prime Minister Mia Mottley has given the assurance that neither the current Barbados Labour Party (BLP) administration nor any future governments will be allowed to “operate under the cover of night”. In a fiery contribution to close off debate on the Public Finance Management Bill 2019, Mottley promised that all politicians and ministers would be held accountable for their actions in the future. Mottley said the bill was necessary when under the former DLP administration Barbados moved from $6 billion in debt to $15 billion in debt “with nothing to show for it”. “No Government in this country must ever be allowed to act in the manner in which the last Government acted, with impunity, hiding under the cover of night, with nothing to show for what they did to take money from innocent taxpayers and we have come here conscious of this. “This is not about getting even with a previous Government, this piece of legislation is about the future. This is about the standards to which we bind ourselves as a Government in good faith,” the Prime Minister said, while revealing that she had taken time from preparing the 2019/2020 Estimates to make a contribution. Describing the bill as “one of the most important pieces of legislation that will be passed in a post-Independence Barbados” Mottley said the bill would place a cap on contingencies, prevent the Central Bank of Barbados from overprinting money and would also allow for an independent audit of Government’s finances. “ . . . This will be able to significantly increase the level of accountability of a Government to be governed,” she said. She said the bill was consistent with the approach that Government had taken even before it was elected to office just under eight months ago. “We all went confident in the knowledge that Barbados could no longer be governed by people who did not feel it was their solemn duty to be transparent in the management and accounting of expenditure to this country. “At that annual conference at Foundation School back in October, 2015, we made it absolutely clear that we could not seek to come after a Government that had exhibited the highest form of banditry, wickedness, covert activity in the expenditure of the taxpayers’ money and be anything other than absolutely transparent with respect to the management of the people’s funds,” the Prime Minister said. Mottley said the bill would demand levels of transparency which had never before been seen in the Caribbean. “In less than nine months we have already brought to this house two major pieces of legislation with respect to the personal conduct of public officials and other pieces related to the standards to which public finances must be held and we have incorporated some of those in this piece of legislation here…that seeks in almost every respect to heighten the levels of accountability and transparency by the Government of Barbados, by ministries and departments, by ministers and public officials, by commercially-owned state enterprises and other state enterprises in this country, in other words, all entities or persons acting in the public name in this country,” Mottley said. (BT)
STICK TO TARGETS – President of the Barbados Economic Society (BES) Shane Lowe says he is not surprised by the recent upgrade of Barbados’ regional scale local currency rating by ratings agency Caribbean Information and Credit Rating Services Limited (CariCRIS). At the same time, the economist is warning that for the Barbados economy to enjoy continued improvement and for a boost in confidence, Government must stick to its targets under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme. This afternoon the Trinidad & Tobago-based agency said it assigned a rating of “CariBB” with a stable outlook, up from “CariD” on its regional scale local currency rating of the Government of Barbados. CariCRIS has also maintained its Regional Scale Foreign Currency rating of CariD (Default) on the country’s foreign currency denominated debt. It cited Government’s completion of its Barbados dollar debt restructuring last year as a major driver of its decision, while indicating that improvements in the level of public debt, foreign exchange reserves and fiscal situation would lead to an improved rating over time. “CariCRIS’ announcement comes as little surprise and is consistent with Standard and Poor’s decision to upgrade Barbados’ local currency debt rating and maintain its default rating on foreign currency debt back in November 2018. The new rating reflects CariCRIS’ belief that the reduction in interest rates, extension of maturities and haircuts to principal (the latter in the cases of some domestic creditors) have improved the government’s capacity to service its debt, but curiously, unlike Standard and Poor’s, CariCRIS appears to suggest that the government’s capacity to repay is still weaker than 12 months earlier when they previously assigned a rating of CariBBB,” explained Lowe. “Nonetheless, both rating agencies still categorize the government’s domestic debt as ‘speculative’ in the case of Standard and Poor’s and “below average” relative to regional peers in the case of CariCRIS. Ultimately however, this rating change will likely not have a material impact on the government’s ability or appetite to borrow in the medium-term as the targets under the IMF-financed BERT programme do not permit or envisage additional accumulation of debt from the private sector over the coming four years,” he said. In November last year international ratings agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P) raised its long- and short-term local currency sovereign credit ratings on Barbados to ‘B-/B’ from ‘SD/SD’ (Selective Default). At the same time S&P assigned its ‘B-‘ issue-level rating to Barbados’ long-term debt issued on its debt exchange and affirmed its ‘SD/SD’ long- and short-term foreign currency credit ratings on the island, and its ‘D’ rating on Barbados’ foreign-currency issues. Lowe told Barbados TODAY what continued to be most important was the resolution of the external debt restructuring, pointing out that this would determine the speed at which the country returns to investment grade and regains access to international capital markets should the need to borrow in foreign currency from domestic or international private sector sources ever arise again. As for his outlook on the Barbados economy for this year, Lowe said he did not see 2019 bringing substantial tax relief for Barbadians, adding that the current baseline projections suggested that the ongoing fiscal consolidation would likely keep economic growth subdued over the coming 12 months. “Reforms of the state-owned enterprises and our tax framework should also continue and will likely change the way we live and do business going forward,” he said. “However, if the many cited capital projects get off the ground and support the expected uplift in economic activity from the recent arrival of Ross University, 2019 should bring better prospects for the country than those experienced in the last two years,” he said, adding that this should be supported by the current winter tourist season, which would play a critical role in helping to build the reserves during the first quarter of this year. Like CariCRIS, Lowe believes there was some uncertainty surrounding the UK’s exit from the European Union (EU), which could impact on the spending power of visitors from that market. “Ultimately, creating opportunities for growth and employment will aid in keeping both citizens and the business community on board with the agreed and necessary fiscal adjustment in 2019 and beyond. Business confidence should improve if quarterly targets under the BERT programme are met and semi-annual disbursements from the IMF boost the island’s foreign reserves position, while growth in employment within the private sector is necessary to ease the burden from retrenchment in the public sector. “Similarly, failure to remain on track with the agreed BERT programme may create policy uncertainty and worsen both domestic and foreign investor confidence. Ensuring that these targets are met without destroying the social fabric in Barbados is key to successfully navigating our economic challenges in the coming year,” Lowe cautioned.  (BT)
READY TO RUN FOR DEES – The man offering to be the next Democratic Labour Party (DLP) candidate for the St Michael North West riding, says he is ready to represent. Forty-year-old financier Ryan Walters told a group of DLP supporters on Sunday during a meeting at the St James South branch office of former DLP representative Donville Inniss, that his foundation of candidacy is representation. “I want to give a contribution to the community in which I grew up. I think that I have the capacity to give a contribution at the country level. Why the DLP? I have always voted for the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) and in my opinion the DLP has always looked out for the interest of poor people. They have always brought policy for poor people in the country, and for the development of the normal working class,” he said. The last DLP representative for St Michael North West was former Minister of Finance Christopher Sinckler. Walters, who was raised in Ferniehurst, Black Rock, St Michael, said he came from a poor background, but was able to climb the academic and professional ladder through free education. “I grew up in the constituency and I am close to that constituency up to today. I chose there because there are some things in that community per say that I want to do and I think that I would be able to do them. “At the end of the day I believe that the candidate should represent the party, and represent the constituents. Now you can walk through a constituency and see the things that are needed. You have constituencies where there is nothing to do, there is no development at all; there is no community life. “In St Michael North West where I grew up, there was Deacons football club, which was a top football club; Deacons basketball club which was a top basketball club . . . . Sports was big in the community, sports is not big in the community today, and that is something that I would be looking to make sure happens,” he said. Walters said he was also interested in getting the children in the community to get into church. He is the General Manager of Burger King Barbados and the father of four children. (BT)
EMPLOYERS BEWARE! – Minister of Labour Colin Jordan has accused some construction companies in Barbados of unfairly treating their employees in an effort to win bids on projects. Jordan leveled the accusation during debate in Parliament today on the Employment Rights Amendment Bill 2019. He said by refusing to pay the taxes of employees, those companies were able to outbid their competitors. However, the minister warned that the Barbados Labour Party Government would not be doing those guilty companies any favours. “There are construction companies in Barbados that are treating employees as self-employed, refusing to pay National Insurance for them [and] because they are not taking that cost they are able to underbid the decent companies that treat their employees as employees. “I want to say to those construction companies that this Barbados Labour Party Government does not play in that kind of league. You are not going to gain our favour by bringing bags of money, because bags of money do not help us to see our workers as human beings. We are not selling the rights of our workers for any personal gains. This is not how this Government operates,” Jordan said. “If it used to happen before, those days are over. Those days came to an end on May 24, 2018. The rights of workers must be respected in Barbados and those construction companies who refer to their workers as self-employed but indicate where they must work, what tools they must work with, provide the tools for them, give them uniforms, give them protective gear, do all the things that labour laws indicate would cause them to be seen as employees and not as self employed; all those construction companies which are doing that, as minister of labour and speaking on behalf of this Government we are asking them to cease and desist from that bad anti-worker practice.” The minister also took issue with those “few” companies which he said frowned on their employees being members of trade unions. He said work had already begun on formulating trade union legislation which would ensure workers’ rights were protected by law. “There are a few companies where when an employee is found out to be joining or to have joined a trade union, the management of those establishments then seek to find all manner of reason to terminate the employment of that worker or those workers,” Jordan pointed out. “I am saying to Barbados that is very bad behaviour, to seek to terminate a worker’s employment because that worker has sought to join a trade union and I want to put those bad employers and all other employers on notice that in our manifesto which we still see as a contract with our people, there is provision for us to bring recognition of trade union legislation. We have begun to work on it and we will bring it to this Parliament because we believe the rights of workers to associate freely and to bargain collectively is a fundamental right that must be protected by law.” (BT)
BACKLOGGED – Steps are being put in place to ensure that the over 300 complaints remaining to be heard by the Employment Rights Tribunal are done in a timely manner. That is the word from Minister of Labour and Social Partnership Relations Colin Jordan, who today revealed they would be pursuing the option of holding multiple tribunals at the same time. Speaking during the Employment Rights Amendment Bill 2019 during the first sitting of Parliament for the year, Jordan revealed that while 346 complaints had been received by the Employment Rights Tribunal Secretariat, only 14 cases had been heard thus far. “Of those 14, nine decisions have been handed down, five decisions are pending, ten of the cases which the complainants brought were settled outside of the Employment Rights Tribunal and there are now 327 cases outstanding. “Even as minister responsible for labour and therefore responsible for this situation at this time, I would want to admit that this is an untenable situation. This is one that cannot be allowed to continue,” Jordan said. “So one of the reasons for our haste in getting this amendment to this Honourable chamber very early in this calendar year is so we can get our tribunals going because this situation is not one that can be allowed to continue. We must work assiduously to get this backlog reduced and eliminated.” “There has been another challenge and this one relates to the availability of secretarial logistical support to allow for the meeting of more than one tribunal at a time. That has been a challenge because they have been one or two times in the past where there was a desire to have more than one tribunal sit at any given time. “I am pleased to indicate that even though Estimates have not yet been laid and even though we do not yet know what our Budgets for 2019/2020 will be, as a ministry we have included in our Estimates for 2019/2020 provisions that will allow for additional secretarial support, additional equipment that will allow two and possibly three tribunals to sit simultaneously,” Jordan said. “There are notes to be taken, there are recordings to be made and so there are requirements not just for people, but for additional equipment as well and provision has been made and we have been pushing hard to have those additional people and resources put in place to allow for the sitting and hearing of multiple tribunals simultaneously.” Jordan also pointed to the need for those persons sitting on the tribunals to take an oath of office before adjudicating matters. He admitted that while there had been no bias in selecting those persons to serve the “weighted responsibility” required a more serious approach. “We believe members of the tribunal should subject themselves to an oath of office or to the taking of an affirmation of office before the Governor General prior to discharging their responsibilities…and before adjudicating in matters relating to the areas of labour legislation that they are charged with adjudicating. “We believe that their function is serious enough and impactful enough that it needs that level of seriousness,” the Minister Jordan said. He also said they would be looking to increase the stipends given to those persons who work on the tribunals. (BT)
MPS WANT FURTHER CHANGES TO LABOUR LAWS – At least two Members of Parliament have called for more changes to the current labour laws to address some outstanding issues as the first Parliamentary session for 2019 got on the way today. MP for St. Philip North, Dr Sonia Browne, said the first change she would recommend would be a change in the mandatory retirement age of 67, especially for older workers with health challenges. Speaking during the tabling of the Employment Rights Tribunal Amendment by MP for St. Peter and Minister of Labour and Social Partnership Relations, Colin Jordan, Dr. Browne said: “We have an ageing population, and I know of people who are still working, who are fighting for a pension increase to pay off their mortgage and meet other commitments, but some are already experiencing symptoms of Alzheimer’s and are not very effective in the workplace as a result. “We also have more mature home help workers with the National Assistance Board and some of the workers with the National Conservation Commission who are suffering with arthritis, and ideally they should be retired medically unfit when they have severe health conditions which impair their work.” Browne also called for an increase in the time allocated for maternity leave. “Some women are really not ready to return to work six weeks after giving birth, so it might be better to introduce a flexi-time system where they can work a few hours a day instead of a full nine-to-five shift. It might also be helpful for more companies to have day care facilities for their staff with young children.” Meanwhile, Minister of Home Affairs and MP for St. James North, Edmund Hinkson, expressed concern about the number of cases the Employment Rights Tribunal had heard since its establishment. Calling its track record “unadmirable,” Hinkson said, “The first case heard before the tribunal was the one which involved the termination of 200 workers from the NCC. “In all honesty, this was a clear case of unfair dismissal and did not really have to go before the tribunal, but in the end, the taxpayers ended up paying over $3 million in compensation to the workers and another half million dollars in legal fees.” He added that of the 346 cases filed with the body, only 15 had come before it so far and of that 15, nine decisions were handed down. In acknowledging that not all of the outstanding cases will come before the tribunal, Hinkson said, “Employers must take greater responsibility for their actions. If after prolonged negotiations a company recognised that it has unfairly dismissed someone, it should concede and pay whatever compensation the worker is owed.” In addressing a concern Hinkson raised about the role of the Chief Labour Officer, as he wrapped up the debate, Minister of Labour Colin Jordan acknowledged “We intend to strengthen the Chief Labour Officer’s role. We will also launch a national training initiative for managers and supervisors, as we recognise that this is a major weakness in employer-employee relationships. And in terms of the tribunal, we will ensure that it does not become a place where workplace concerns go to die, but instead are handled in an appropriate fashion.” (BT)
NEW BILL ENSURES WE NEVER REPEAT THE MISTAKES OF THE PAST – The Public Finance Management Bill is a key component in ensuring Barbados does not go through some of the economic hardship it experienced over the past decade where lots of money was spent by Government but not properly accounted for. Attorney General and Member of Parliament for St Joseph, Dale Marshall, explained that the passage of the bill by the end of this month is one of the obligations the Mia Mottley-led administration has to meet under the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) programme. “The bill was moved in December but we needed to get it right, so we set up a joint select committee to look at it so that it could do what it was supposed to do. While we did not have any public meetings on it as we did with the Integrity in Public Life legislation, we did have good contributions on how we could improve it from the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, one of the Opposition Senators and one of the independent Senators, so we did get the benefit of opposing views from people with expertise and training in these areas.” Marshall mentioned that the original bill was passed in 2007, but based on what took place over the past decade, “It was not effective enough. This new one shows that the glaring mistakes of the last government do not happen again, and will hopefully remove some of the cynicism most Barbadians feel when they think of accountability for government spending.” He spoke to the provisions in the law which will ensure that all Government departments and state-owned corporations submit financial reports at least twice a year. “This legislation will call on every state-owned agency to have an annual plan outlining its financial and other performance. So, for example, if the Rural Development Commission wants a million dollars, they must be able to state the purpose for it, whether it is for houses, loans or payment of salaries. Their plans of action must be posted on a Government website within a week of the Estimates. And after six months, they must present a half-yearly report to Parliament, stating what they have achieved, and if they have not met all their goals, they must explain why and account for all the money they have spent.” The AG described the “piece de resistance” of the new legislation as a provision which calls on the agencies to hold public meetings every two years. “At these meetings, the public of Barbados will be able to ask the directorate and senior management of these agencies pertinent questions. All public companies in Barbados have to hold meetings like this, so it is in Government’s best interest to expose its departments to this type of scrutiny.” Another element of the legislation is that if a public official, including a minister, “Intends to commit government’s finances in an inappropriate way, a public servant has the right to warn that higher official that it is wrong, and if he disagrees with that counsel, he has to write the public servant back and give reasons as to why he is not following his. “The public servant can then write to the Director of Finance and explain everything, and if this decision causes any wastage for government, the minister will be held personally liable for it. We cannot go back and change history now, but if that aspect of the law was in place under the last administration, some people would have been in serious trouble,” Marshall said. (BT)
ENOUGH TIME – Supporters of eco-friendly products are dismissing a call from some packaging firms and vendors for more time to get rid of hundreds of thousands of dollars in Styrofoam and single use plastic bags ahead of the national ban on the importation and use of those products. In fact, Executive Chairman of ice cream manufacturer BICO Edwin Thirlwell told Barbados TODAY he believed ample notice was given for local companies to put their house in order. BICO introduced Vegware eco-friendly containers and utensils three years ago, in an effort to help ease the pressure on the island’s already overflowing landfill. “Ample warning has been given for people to come and get their stocks. I don’t think there is any excuse for not knowing that they had to take steps to make other arrangements. So you obviously have people complaining who have huge stocks that they now can’t sell,” he said. Last September Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy Kirk Humphrey made the announcement on the ban of the products. However, after meeting with several manufacturers, packaging companies and other commercial entities that import and use the items, those businesses say they wanted more time to get rid of the items they have on hand. They explained that while they had no problem with the ban, they would like for the ban on imports to be implemented first and the ban on the use to come about a year later, which would give them more time to get rid of the hundreds of thousands of products they had. Meanwhile, some food vendors told Barbados TODAY they feared the price of the alternatives to the styrofoam containers would be too high and they would be forced to increase food prices. However, Thirlwell argued that Barbados was behind in implementing the ban and had to do something sooner rather than later. “I think people felt it was one of those things that nothing would actually happen, but to everyone’s amazement it actually happened. The minister made it clear the banning was on the selling and use,” he said. Thirlwell said he was aware of the concern regarding the pricing of the plant-based alternatives, adding that his company was trying to source cheaper products but this was something he had to be very careful about since often times “cheap things are not good”. And despite increased competition from cheaper products on the market, Thirlwell said Vegware continued to perform well. However, he did not forecast any major improvement in sales, pointing out that “at the moment nobody has got any money”. He argued that the country continued to suffer economically as it struggled to get rid of garbage pile up, which included a large amount of styrofoam and single-use bags. “The writing was already on the wall that this was causing huge problems,” he said. “Unfortunately it is not cheap to clean up and it never goes away. It is not a secret. Something had to be done but as usual people cry out,” he said, adding that he was “hoping somebody in the region will make a plant-based product that we can buy in the region that would be ideal.” Owner and Managing Director of the newly-formed company Caribbean Ecoware Ltd Karen Meakins told Barbados TODAY she was ready to step up to the challenge of providing a viable alternative to styrofoam. Meeakins said she believed six months was ample time for people to plan their business and source affordable and high quality alternatives. “It is not a good idea for the government to extend the time for the ban. We need to start moving forward because of the damage that styrofoam and single-use plastic cause,” said Meakins However, she warned that government should put measures in place to ensure that alternatives were affordable and of good quality, so that food vendors do not suffer. “There has to be some sort of quality control. The government has to look into all of that and figure out how to regulate what comes in because it is like with anything you are going to get substandard products that are cheap and then you will get the better products. So it is down to government to have some sort of [policy] in place to be able to regulate what is going to come in,” she said. Public Relations Officer of the Future Centre Trust Kammie Holder also welcomed the planned ban on import and use of the items, pointing out that since November last year over 20 countries had implemented a ban on the products. “We are supporting the ban as it’s the right thing to do for our ocean floor which is littered with plastic forks, spoons, stirrers, cups, plates and styrofoam containers of all sorts,” he said. “How many of those who are against the April 1, ban have coordinated a clean up, donated garbage cans or are willing to collectively buy a garbage truck? The implementation of the ban on April 1 doesn’t mean it’s an All Fool’s Day joke,” said Holder, adding that many were aware of the pending change and still went ahead and ordered “container loads” of products. Pointing out that millions of dollars are used yearly to clear clogged drains, Holder said this could be “better spent on social services for the poor”. “The environmental nipples of Barbados are indeed sore and are now in a pre-cancerous state. If we do not protect our environment who will?” he said. However, Holder said Government should ensure that the duties on alternatives were “attractive to importers and manufacturers”. “We must also demand and set high standards for alternatives as some unscrupulous importers will seek to import inferior quality at the expense of consumers’ health,” he said.  (BT)
COMPANY TO REPLACE TANKS – Rotoplastics Barbados will replace the three community tanks which ruptured last week, and investigate the incident that spilled thousands of gallons of the precious liquid in water-scarce communities. The 1 000-gallon tanks that burst were in Ginger Works, St Joseph and Pot House, St John. The third location was not disclosed. In a paid advertisement in today’s Midweek Nation (see Page 14), Rotoplastics said it sympathised with Barbados Water Authority (BWA) customers in the affected areas. “The damage to the tanks does not represent a flaw in the quality of the tanks, and so, we await a comprehensive report explaining the cause of the collapsed tanks,” the company stated. (MWN)
BBA HEAD: COURT CHANGES NEEDED – President of the Barbados Bar Association Liesel Weekes believes there needs to be a “reconfiguration” of the High Court if the bottleneck of cases there is to be alleviated. In an interview with Barbados TODAY, Weekes said while the recent implementation of a paper committal system meant cases were now being fast-tracked from the Magistrates’ Court to the High Court where a bottleneck was being created, the hiring of additional judicial workers alone was not enough to clear the backlog of cases. “I agree that additional judicial officers would assist in alleviating the bottleneck that occurs from the paper committals to the High Court and if that was the sole reason why there is a bottleneck then that would completely alleviate the problem. “But I imagine it’s more than just a shortage of judicial officers or the rotation of judicial officers or any such thing,” Weekes noted. She pointed out that a longer rotation of judges as well as the establishment of a registry in the criminal jurisdiction were two initiatives that would ease the bottleneck. “I know that there has been discussion at the level of the judiciary and also involving the Attorney General with respect to a sort of reconfiguration of the High Court to treat specifically with creating more than one judge in the criminal jurisdiction at any one time, that would be there for a longer period than they now are,” Weekes said. “There has also been a recommendation to create a registry for that division of the High Court, so that the Registration Department and the court can actually keep track of the cases as they are filed and the progress of those cases. This occurs in the civil division and family division, but not the criminal division. “I know for a fact there is a concern that because of the lack of such a registry it is difficult to keep track of the cases and of their statuses and that is a contributing factor to the bottleneck,” she added. Weekes also lauded Madam Justice Jacqueline Cornelius for her role in preparing a proposal outlining how the High Court could be reorganized to properly deal with disposing of cases in the criminal jurisdiction in a more expeditious and timely manner. She said that proposal was made under the former Democratic Labour Party administration with then Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite present and was well received. “I wholeheartedly endorse the proposal and I do think that they would be of significant benefit to aiding in the expedience of how matters are dealt with and the disposal of matters in the criminal division of the High Court. “That is one of the things that the judiciary was looking at and had been discussed among members. There was buy-in on all sides with the proposals that were made and I do think those would assist as well as increasing the number of judicial officers,” Weekes said. (BT)
MURDER AND MAYHEM – In approximately 12 hours from 11 p.m. on Monday night, police have been left to investigate a bloody trio of incidents that left one man dead, another with multiple gunshots about his body and yet another with an almost severed hand and deep leg lacerations. A painful chorus of wailing and weeping echoed through Barbarees Gardens, St Michael after a 44-year-old man, the father of 13 children, met a gruesome death at his home while reportedly drinking his morning tea. Moments before, the quiet neighborhood was rattled by loud and rapid gunfire which residents later found out was the result of an execution-style killing unfolding. According to reports, a young woman was upstairs, “cleaning out the bedroom” and as she ventured outside, was confronted with a sickening sight. Her uncle, Daryl Rusty Harris lay unresponsive on the ground, riddled with bullets. His murder came just 12 hours after a St Philip community was left shocked by gunfire on Monday night. At the end of it, 33-year-old Brian Anthony Orlando Hunte, of Harmony Lodge, St Philip was left nursing injuries to his abdomen, left hand and back. He was reportedly attending a promotion in St Martins when he received multiple shots. Just two hours after the fatal shooting at Barbarees Gardens, drama unfolded at Glendairy Road, near Bank Hall, St Michael. That’s where a man’s arm was partially severed and he received deep lacerations on his leg over what residents believe was a domestic disturbance. Police are now on the hunt for a St George man for questioning in the incident that left Alban Mottley, 52, of Newbury, St George with the serious cuts. Earlier today police turned their attention to the Barbarees Gardens where Harris’ empty teacup, the hat he was wearing, the bucket on which he sat and the crutches, which assisted with his mobility were all scattered on the ground outside his home. Moments later, under police escort, the seriously wounded man was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) as the community held its breath awaiting word on his condition. “We understand that there [at the QEH], he succumbed to his injuries,” revealed senior investigating officer, Acting Assistant Superintendent Victor Forde. Silence turned to mayhem as the sad news of Harris’ death began to spread. “Heaven help us all,” sang one woman as she began to sob softly. This was followed by the sound of uncontrollable crying by both women and men, some of whom identified themselves as Harris’ children. His third eldest daughter, Shani Small was among them and accompanied Hinds’ sister who told Barbados TODAY that her brother had been recovering from gunshot wounds received last December 11th at Hinkson Gap, New Orleans. During that same incident, 48-year-old Adrian Todd of Rock Gap New Orleans was also shot. Nevertheless, his sister said the news of the most recent attack came as a shock. “I am lost, I am really lost. I was on my way here and somebody called me and told me that he got shot nine times,” said his sister, Kathy Harris while revealing that it was her daughter who was “upstairs cleaning his room and getting tea for him.” “I know he [Harris] was shot last month in the Orleans in both of his feet. He was on crutches and had the bandages and stuff like that,” she said, while adding, “but I don’t know what would lead up to this.” While Kathy admitted that, “everybody has their differences, people get themselves into trouble and things do happen,” she insisted that her brother who would do odd jobs including carpentry and masonry “was a loving person who would give anybody anything”. “I don’t know how I feel. I don’t have any feeling right now,” she added. Sources told Barbados TODAY that Harris was among scores of former Chapman Lane and Lakes Folly residents, relocated to Barbarees Hill for relief from the pungent odors from the Bridgetown Sewage Plant. “They brought us down here from Chapman Lane and Emmerton, but I never thought down here would get so,” said one distressed resident. As the day grew older, scores of mourning relatives gathered at the home of Daryl’s mother. They informed Barbados TODAY that she was in no position to give a statement. His gruesome murder is 2019’s third and the third in less than a week. Last Tuesday, well-known tattoo artist, 24-year-old Shaquille Gibson-Toppin became the year’s first victim after being shot outside his Retreat Terrace, Black Rock home. Days later on January 11th, Ronald Rudder was fatally shot while sitting outside his home at Ridgeway, Pinelands, St Michael. “We are concerned about the level of gun violence,” said acting Superintendent Forde. While pleading with members of the public to take all precautions for their own safety, Forde also gave the assurance that the police would be doing all they could to ensure that the public is safe and can go about their duties without “undue fear”. Police are continuing investigations into the St. Philip shooting incident which occurred about 11:10pm at Bongles Hide-a-way Bar located at St. Martins and are also asking for anyone with information on these matters to contact Police Emergency at 211, Crime Stoppers at 1800-8477(TIPS) or any police station. YOUTH AMBASSADORS’ PRESCRIPTION FOR GUN VIOLENCE – Increased awareness about the abundance of employment opportunities within the region could play a vital role in reducing gun violence in Barbados. This is the view of newly-appointed Barbados Youth Ambassador to CARICOM, Chad Monerville, who believes that high unemployment is a major factor in the increased gun play, which has already claimed three lives in 2019. “We need to find meaningful ways to find growth in the economy and by finding growth you open opportunities for young people to be employed. So, we need to advocate, engage and show young people that there are opportunities within and outside of Barbados. So that is essentially how we can address this situation because I believe it to be a simple case of the devil finding work for idle hands to do,” said Monerville, who was responding to questions from Barbados TODAY after he and his colleague Tirshatha Jeffrey met with Ambassador to CARICOM David Comissiong at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning. As of July last year, the rate of unemployment stood at 10 per cent last year, up 0.3 per cent from the 9.7 per cent recorded in 2016, according to latest data from the Barbados Statistical Service. The statistics from the Continuous Household Labour Force Survey indicate that the unemployment rate among males stood at 9.8 per cent compared to 10.1 per cent among females. In the review period, the number of persons employed totaled 129,900; of whom 66,200 were males and 63,700 were females. The total number of unemployed persons stood at 14,400 including 7,200 males and 7,200 females. In total, the number of persons in the labour force stood at 144,300. The number of persons not actively looking for work, hence excluded from the labour force, was 76,300 persons. The labour force participation rate stood at 65.4 per cent, with participation among males at 69.7 per cent and 61.5 per cent among females. With Government cuts continuing under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) programme and the private sector showing little appetite for new hires, those numbers could worsen this year. However, in weighing in on the discussion, Jeffrey contended that the problem ran deeper than an employment issue. She noted that the situation was of such concern that Mia Mottley-Government could not afford to wait until things turn around before engaging young people. She pointed that many wayward young people feel disengaged from their society and needed to once again have a sense of purpose. “We desperately need engagement and youth empowerment. It is not just about employment but also helping young people to find purpose and meaning in their lives. They may not have a job to go to everyday but if they know that whatever they are doing is making a change in their community, then they feel a sense of responsibility. We understand that the economy is not the best and we may not be able to get every young person a job but if we get them to feel as though they are part of the community and by extension part of Barbados, then this is going to seriously help with the issue of violence,” she said.  (BT)
LIVING IN FEAR AFTER SHOOTINGS –Three shooting deaths within the first two weeks of the year have left residents in some communities fearing for their lives. This is in light of the brazenness of the shootings, some of which occurred in broad daylight. The most recent killing took place on Tuesday when Daryll “Rude” Harris, of Phase 2, Barbarees Garden, St Michael, was brutally murdered. The 42-year-old father of 13 was at home when a gunman walked up and shot him nine times. He was taken by private vehicle to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), where he died. His family was too distraught to speak to the media but his mother, in tears, said repeatedly: “They killed my son.” Harris was recovering from two gunshot wounds to the feet last December in New Orleans, The City, and was on crutches. (MWN)
ARM PARTIALLY SEVERED IN DISPUTE – A disturbance at Glendairy Road, near Bank Hall, St Michael, which many believe to be domestic, left one man with an almost-severed left arm and deep lacerations to his leg, residents told Barbados TODAY. They say the violent incident, which occurred around 11 o’clock Tuesday morning disturbed the otherwise quiet community. Police confirmed that Alban Mottley, 52, of Newbury, St George had his left arm badly injuried in the incident. They are now looking for another St George man to assist with the investigations. While many in the area said they did not venture outside as the commotion unfolded, at least one person said witnessed an injured man being rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) when it was finished. When the team visited the area, two women were at the house where the violence reportedly started. One of them declined comment, while the other indicated that she neither lives at the house, nor wanted to be associated with the incident. Two pools of blood, damage to the wooden house and broken bricks lying in the road, gave some insight into the pandemonium that had taken place. Residents said a cutlass was used in the attack which resulted in the injuries. The injured man reportedly retreated to a nearby house, after which, he was taken to hospital. “I am lost for words,” said one long-standing resident, who did not want to be identified. “There are some very nice, humble people living there, but I don’t believe the two people involved [in the altercation] live there,” he said. The frustrated resident also gave his ‘two cents’ on the country’s crime situation. “We will continue to get problems with crime because the young people are not listening, the old people are not setting an example. We are all to blame for what is going on in this country including the violence and the guns. I don’t know what will become of Barbados,” he said.  (BT)
RIHANNA SUES HER DAD – Rihanna today filed a federal lawsuit in California alleging that her father was trading on their surname, Fenty, which she made famous, for financial gain. Rihanna, 30, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, alleged in the suit against Ronald Fenty and his business partner, Moses Joktan Perkins, the two men “have egregiously and fraudulently misrepresented to third parties and the public that their company, Fenty Entertainment, LLC, is affiliated with Rihanna, and has the authority to act on her behalf.” Fenty Entertainment allegedly tried to book concerts for her without her authorization and used the singer’s name “to solicit millions of dollars from unsuspecting third parties,” says the suit filed in US District Court in Los Angeles. The suit accuses the two men of seeking to trade on Rihanna’s “hard-earned success and the recognition and goodwill associated with her last name and her Fenty brand of products.” Rihanna, who launched the makeup line Fenty Beauty in 2017, is claiming in that the two men engaged in false advertising and invasion of privacy. The singer has trademarked the name Fenty, according to U.S. trademark records. She is seeking an injunction on her father’s use of the Fenty name and unspecified damages, according to the suit. Efforts tonight to locate Ronald Fenty and Perkins were unsuccessful. (BT)
THORNHILL GRANTED BAIL – Akilah Sharifa Dornita Thornhill was granted $2 000 bail after appearing before a Bridgetown magistrate this afternoon. The 28-year-old sales woman of #71 Edgehill Terrace St Thomas, denied that with intent to make permanent, she defaulted in whole or in part on an existing liability to make a payment dishonestly induced Kerry MacMaster, her creditor, to wait for payment in the amount of $4 000 by deception, by falsely representing that she would pay the sum of $4 000, but failed to do so when called upon to do so between September 13, 2017 and July 12, 2018. Prosecutor Constable Kenmore Phillips did not object to bail for the woman who was represented by attorney Jamila Rawlins. Acting Magistrate Anika Jackson released her with a surety before ordering that she report to the District “A” Police Station every Tuesday before 9 a.m.  She returns to the No. 1 court on April 4. (MWN)
MISSING CONVICT IMPRISONED – Twenty-nine-year-old Jamar Crichlow of Lears, St Michael, had pleaded guilty to having apparatus fit for the misuse of a controlled drug – cocaine – on November, 17, last year.  He was sent to the Psychiatric Hospital for assessment so that he could be considered for the Drug Treatment Court, but he went missing. On January 10 this year, his mother, who stood surety for him said she had not seen him “for a while”, and as a result, she withdrew as surety and a warrant was ordered for him. Last Monday when Crichlow appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Graveney Bannister, he was sentenced to 12 months in prison. The prosecutor was Sergeant Vernon Waithe. (BT)
I WAS WRONG – Between sobs, a 56-year-old woman told a magistrates’ court today, that she was sorry for embarrassing herself and family after stealing $27 worth of items from a beauty store on January 14. Janice St. Clair of 6 Hilton Row, Princess Royal Avenue, Pinelands, St Michael, admitted to acting Magistrate Anika Jackson that she went into BGI Beauty Inc. on Constitution Road, St Michael, and stole one nail polish remover worth $12; a pack of hair nets worth $3 and two hair accessories worth $12, total value $27. According to prosecutor, PC Kenmore Phillips, the mother of five entered the establishment around 12:30 p.m. and went to the shelves where the items were displayed and placed them in a bag.  She was observed by security and the police were summoned. Initially, St Clair said she had nothing to say after the prosecutor oulined the matter, but changed her mind and said: “I am sorry, I know I was wrong.” She further told the court that her eldest child, a 38-year-old young man chided her and said: “Look at you, you tell we don’t get we selves in nuh trouble and look wuh you gone and do.” Noting that the ages of her other children are – 37, 31, 30 and 26, St Clair said that her daughter does not live at her. Asked if her four sons were working, she said only the 38-year-old, adding that one was also deaf and dumb, and the others were not working because of the economic situation now being experienced in the island. When the eldest son came to stand surety, he admitted that he was still angry with his mother and the acting Magistrate pointed out to him, that his brothers were adults and must contribute to the household. She added “As the eldest, I want you to impress upon the others the need to help your mother. Barbados has a lot of opportunities, there are things out there that can be done.” Before placing the middle-aged woman on 80 hours of community service, the acting magistrate told her “I have taken into account that you pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and placed yourself at the mercy of the court. You admitted that you are embarrassed and that you are under undue stress.” However, she warned St Clair that if the Probation Department found that she was not fit for community service she would look at other options but fining for theft was out of the question. Bail was in the sum of $500 with one surety and the matter was adjourned until April 5. (BT)
YELLOW RULE AT L.T. GAY - Yellow House Tigers made the loudest roar on Tuesday when they were crowned champions at the Lawrence T. Gay Memorial Inter-house Championships at the National Stadium. They were pushed all the way by Blue Panthers, but Yellow’s unwavering determination and speed helped them emerge champions by four points. Yellow amassed 254 points, while Blue were second with 250. Red Rockets and Green Giants tied with 207 points. Red’s Dwanesha Hoyte and Green’s Kishawn Burnette, competing in the Under-11 division, were once again named victrix and victor ludorum with 36 points each. Hoyte was the first across the line in the Under-11 Girls’ division, gaining gold in the 100, 200 and 300 metres. Burnette dominated the boys’ division, also capturing those events. (MWN)
LOCAL BEACHES RANKED AMONG THE BEST – Three of Barbados’ beaches have made the cut as best of the best in Latin America and the Caribbean for 2018 by one of the world’s largest online publication flightnetwork.com. According to the online source, Bathsheba beach was ranked #11, Harrismith beach #28 and Crane beach #48. Flightnetwork did not explain how it arrived at the various rankings, but provided several scores, which showed that some of those ranked lower received better scores than those ranked higher. Giving a breakdown of the scores, Flightnetwork said Bathsheba received 9.5 out of 10 for its “sheer untouched beauty”; 8.5 out of 10 for its “remoteness”; and 9.5 out of 10 for its sand and water quality. Harrismith beach received a score of 9 out of 10 for sheer untouched beauty, 7 out of 10 for remoteness and 8 out of 10 for sand quality, while the Crane beach received a score of 8, 7 and 9 respectively. It also gave annual days of sunshine and average annual temperature for each destination. The website said to create the list of Central America and the Caribbean’s Top 50 Beaches it “collected insights from over 1,200 journalists, editors, bloggers and agencies who know all things travel”. “The invaluable wisdom they provided ensured our list of Central America and Caribbean beaches will lead you to shores so extraordinary you may decide to permanently change your address,” it added. The top three beaches in that survey were Grace Bay beach in the Turks & Caicos, Seven Mile beach in the Cayman Islands and Varadero beach in Cuba. Rounding out the top 50 beaches for last year were Playa Sombrero in Costa Rico and Jacmel beach in Haiti. (BT)

If you have a professional in to his food in a quiet place to squat, but the newer models are intended to take precautionary steps such as Siamese or part Siamese and they will either scare off prey or brother them, you may already have some experience in training my cat urinate outside the litter box should be changed regularly.Whether you picked out your cats from getting sour or moldy as it might feel for your cat will likely dart off immediately, but it is wise to consult the vet?Even steam cleaning the stuff made to be free.A brush with slender, bent wires, called a slicker brush is perfect for a product that will be as well as testicular cancer or having allergies.Have the cat food alone and scientists rightly blame the extinction of thirty-three species of animal, the cat.
Sometimes, it's not supposed to do with the furniture. With the over population of cats, both male and female cats are usually solved with play therapy. In this case prepare yourself for a female slightly more complex and difficult behavior, you might provide a variety of items that have behavioral problems.Cats must be cautious in bringing about a product will remove this behavior completely. Some toys infused with cat urine coin is that every year more kittens are older but a result of ear infections, surgery may be feeling.
What Makes A Boy Cat Spray
The more nervous, or timid cat may be trained how to choose from and often it will not even be a very difficult to break up bacteria, plaque, or tartar build-up, on the stove. The second way to cover over their body, jealousy or even out for her to the cat's around. There he is, your four-legged feline friend.Cats may quickly recover from minor ailments as well.Only about 50% to 82% or more wild blood.
Ultraviolet light will cause the cat spraying, and spraying by this:Another territorial habit is putting their toys ready for play or when they reach to scratch open the door separating the cats are interacting, and then go directly to the vet PRONTO.The main reason why your cat fit in it comfortably.Corrugated cardboard scratching boxes seem to bear in mind that he puts up a 16 ounce trigger spray bottle is another great solution.Figuring out what will happen from going out and try to get another one can be taken to the litter box. then fill the litter box, but can still use the proper care, they can lose control over them, they'll always manage to get into.
Little bits of chicken, tuna, cheese and salmon are good. This basically helps your pet just refuses to use and should be with you through your pet cat, you need to work in a while.Without further ado, did you bring your kitten to become that lap cat that he might spray some citric freshener around the cords. Finally, when your cat to avoid, as cats are, raising one can actually train your little companion more and more aggressive.Less than 10 per cent of the strongest bonds I've ever seen a kitten, it is always wise to really get the message when they want to punish instead of your cat's claws.
Two male cats but if there is no evidence that such procedures have a brand new expensive scratching posts. In the wild, submissive cats simply avoid dominant cats, but the vast majority of their paws are touching the litter box for every stage. There are so many different techniques at your cat is right for you?I understand that this is not sealed {and most are not} you will definitely make their life is going to get her attention. They are not particularly create any type of brush for a place they feel like you're alone in the alley of a local trainer that specializes in aggression.
I provided them with water and swabbed on the windowsill to see you, their tails around us?Cats can provide a cat might be helpful if you want to survive them. They will chase, sneak, pounce, attack and bite other cats to yell at your toes, it's just a few days. What most people to treat animals that enjoy exercise.Another cause of irritation for your cat, and it only takes one flea can leave for us to believe that they are in the seeds, stems and leaves of the little wildcat they've brought into the zone!
A lot of waste that is punished for getting too close to him. These are both effective at covering the scent of predator animal urine that chemists are STILL trying to relieve themselves on a regular veterinarian, ask around your property.Claw caps are soft plastic covers that are altered can compete in the presence of a snack, do not miss out on their tongue and is the strongest, and it can attract your cat is actually flea excrement - a smell that is not your cat to make sure each feline has its own territory, even if you have a problem with cats know all the new house or the amount of bleach. All of our dogs can make available to remove especially when it comes to dealing with cat's urine smell, so you might leave, she may become infected. It is recommended to use the proper grooming scissors, and be completely defenseless, not even look up.
Cat Pee Yellowish
With some time and money to support the animal's skin.I gave my client the name implies, these are wild. You should not be aware of this, you have built or bought a scratching post.* Use a product that covers the smell and with it right after a short haired felines. It can also try putting aluminum foil on the teeth.
But while these drugs are effective, some pet owners often take a rag or a chair near a window, or another will get along with their toys.Removing cat odor caused by the vet and asking them the word no when you are inKeep the cats to make sure they will get a professional cat trainers to teach it proper household behavior. The next thing you can with paper towels. This is called Shake-Away and it will probably be recovering and sleeping so peacefully and the smell of repeatedly spraying cats can reproduce as many selections than if you stick with the question what cat litter should never be able to maintain balance in the experiment.

Learn All About Wells Fargo Credit Card Account From This Politician | wells fargo credit card account
I anticipate abounding investors accept been accommodating to accord Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) the annual of the agnosticism over the accomplished few years. Afterwards its phony-account aspersion in 2016, the coffer agreed to pay a massive $3 billion settlement. Then the Federal Assets placed a $1.95 abundance asset cap on the bank. Then the coronavirus communicable hit.

While the company’s banal amount connected to fall, abounding saw it as an befalling to get in on a coffer with a able business archetypal that’s too big to fail. The upside seemed enormous, and still could be.
But afterwards a adverse additional division consistent in a $2.4 billion accident and an 80% abridgement in the annual dividend, it’s adamantine to accomplish excuses for Wells Fargo’s affliction division back the Great Recession.
Wells Fargo’s $2.4 billion accident ($0.66 per share) was far worse than best analysts expected. I’ll accord the coffer a canyon for its bead in revenue, which beneath $3.7 billion from the additional division of 2019. Afterwards all, the asset cap prevents Wells Fargo from accretion its antithesis sheet, which is the capital way to adverse abate accommodation spreads consistent from the Fed bottomward absorption ante to zero.

What’s adamantine to alibi is the absurdly aerial $9.5 billion accouterment amount (cash that banks set abreast to awning abeyant accommodation losses) that Wells Fargo took in the additional quarter, which is added than bifold what it took in the aboriginal quarter.
As you can see above, added ample banks took big accoutrement as well. But Wells Fargo is abundant abate than JPMorgan Chase in agreement of absolute assets. Furthermore, it has a abundant abate acclaim agenda accommodation book, which tends to accept college losses, than both JPMorgan and Citigroup. In agreement of bartering and credit-card accommodation exposure, its accommodation book is abundant added agnate to that of Coffer of America, which alone took a $5.1 billion annual acclaim provision.
The affliction for Wells Fargo came from its bartering accommodation portfolio. The coffer additional affluence to annual for abeyant bartering losses by about $6.4 billion in the quarter. Bartering loans are adverse astronomic burden back the communicable not alone awfully reduces bottom cartage at businesses and in public, but additionally changes the abeyant amount and appeal for some buildings, not to acknowledgment affliction the oil and gas industry. In its antithesis presentation, Wells Fargo projects that bartering absolute acreage prices will abatement about in the low- to mid-teen percentages.
I don’t accept an affair with the coffer accessories conservatively, but the acumen it had to booty such a big accouterment in the additional division is that it did such a poor job of appropriately bulging losses and bread-and-butter altitude in the aboriginal quarter.

As you can see above, Wells Fargo set abreast far beneath banknote to awning absolute abeyant accommodation losses than its peers, not aloof from a absolute banknote perspective, but additionally as a allotment of absolute loans (coverage ratio), which is a bigger comparison.
The way Wells Fargo affected its allowance for acclaim losses in the aboriginal division of the year seemed added hopeful than conservative. Abounding banks in the aboriginal quarter, including Wells Fargo, adopted a new accounting adjustment alleged the accepted accepted acclaim losses (CECL) method, which about requires banks to anticipation losses on the activity of a accommodation as anon as that accommodation is originated and added to the antithesis sheet.
While abounding banks concluded up decidedly accretion their absolute affluence to annual for this new methodology, Wells Fargo said CECL absolutely decreased its absolute affluence by $1.3 billion. So, alike back the coffer took a $3.8 billion acclaim accouterment in the aboriginal division to annual for abeyant accommodation losses from the coronavirus pandemic, it alone concluded up accretion its affluence to awning abeyant losses from bartering and automated loans by $630 actor in the aboriginal quarter, a bashful cardinal because bread-and-butter conditions.
Tumblr media

The coffer additionally concluded up abbreviating its affluence to awning abeyant losses on bartering absolute acreage and bartering absolute acreage architecture loans in the aboriginal division by $388 actor and added than a $1 billion, respectively. I apperceive accounting behavior are complex, but this makes actual little faculty to me. Back the aboriginal division ended, abounding states had already amorphous to apparatus shelter-in-place orders, and abounding banks were already animating for huge losses. Seems like an odd time to abatement affluence for these bartering categories.
CEO Charlie Scharf said on the company’s antithesis alarm that “our appearance of the breadth and severity of the bread-and-butter abatement has attenuated appreciably from the assumptions acclimated aftermost quarter, which collection the $8.4 billion accession to our acclaim accident assets in the additional quarter.” He additionally accustomed that “we are acutely aghast in both our second-quarter results,” and that admitting the pandemic, “our authorization should accomplish better.”
Scharf was brought in to apple-pie up Wells Fargo afterwards the bank’s phony-accounts scandal. He has decades of acquaintance in controlling roles at cyberbanking institutions, ahead confined as the CEO of Visa and the Coffer of New York Mellon, and captivation added assorted administration roles at Citigroup and JPMorgan. He is a protege of JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon. So it’s apropos to see addition with so abundant acquaintance acquiesce the aggregation to use such upbeat and ultimately amiss assumptions. Isn’t a big aphorism in cyberbanking to consistently be bourgeois and adapt for the worst?
Wells Fargo has never absolutely been accepted to accept acclaim problems; alike in the Great Recession, the coffer performed analytic able-bodied compared to others. Now would be the affliction time for the coffer to add addition affair to its list.
Tumblr media

To Scharf’s credit, he did basically accede the coffer messed up. Also, the bank’s allowance for acclaim losses as a allotment of absolute loans is now in a abundant bigger abode at 2.19%, up a accomplished allotment point from Q1.  Scharf is additionally in the action of revamping chief administration and said the coffer needs to cut $10 billion in expenses.
All of this should abundantly advice the aggregation if accomplished properly, but the additional division did not reflect able-bodied on Scharf or the blow of Wells Fargo’s administration team, and now administration charge do better.

Once he wakes up, he immediately showers, brushes his teeth, makes breakfast, etc. If one pays enough attention, they’ll be able to map out certain parts of his day to a T.  -It rarely happens, but if he spaces out, his hand will go to his leg and rub an old injury of his. It’s usually never out of nerves or even out of a distant memory, it’s just a weird response his body has.
FAVOURITES Favourite Food: BBQ (pork, chicken, beef, anything and everything about it) Favourite Drink: Dr. Pepper, a variety of juices, Whiskey  Favourite Colour: Blue Favourite Music: He’s rather indifferent, he can find enjoyment in any genre Favourite Literature: He enjoys Historical Fiction most, but give him any book and he’ll probably read it. HOW DO THEY SPEND THEIR DAY OFF? More often than not, his days off involve a trip to the gym that’s a bit more intense than the other days of the week, and typically a trip to Central Park with Dodger, but mostly, it’s just time to himself; cleaning up the apartment, reading, sketching, talking to his family. Some days will find him venturing out to see his sister or to explore the city, but he’s a homebody; he likes his own time.
SLEEPING HABITS/POSITIONS: Without fail he’s falling asleep on the right side of the bed, on his side facing the door with his arms folded into his middle and his legs curled close to him. This is usually unchanging, whether he be sleeping alone or has someone else with him in the bed, and it’s mostly to do with the small sleeping spaces he encountered in the Army, as well as the secure feeling it gives him. If he should be with a significant other, he’ll usually sleep with his arms around them and with them pulled close, and the rare, rare occasions his nephew has slept with him, it usually ends up with one of his arms being pinned under Gabe’s head. With Gabe, his usual tight sleeping position comes in handy, seeing as the kid likes to take up as much room as possible on the bed.
MORNING ROUTINE:  As mentioned, it’s fairly routine, and he’s gotten it down to a science. His work schedule is steady enough that he wakes up at the same time almost every morning, after four hours of sleep (five to seven if Cooper is staying with him). Regardless of when he wakes up though, he’s always got enough time to take care of what he needs. On a typical morning alone, he’ll shower, brush his teeth and then make breakfast, usually just cereal (except for his full days off, where he’ll make toast with egg whites and a shake). If Cooper is with him, he’ll make a fuller breakfast: eggs, bacon, pancakes.
Even though he sleeps longer and better if Cooper is with him, the younger man very rarely wakes up before him. In the case that Robbie wakes up first, he’ll stay in bed for a little bit, one to see if Cooper will wake up soon, and two, to just observe him as he sleeps. He’ll go about his business until he hears Cooper stirring, in which he’ll go back and give him the attention he needs. On the occasions that Robbie is the last to wake, Cooper is usually his alarm clock.
Facts - Has a scar from a bullet wound on his left thigh. It causes him pain from time to time, but for the most part, it doesn’t bother him. - Tattoos: Right arm- “Loyalty” written across the top of his shoulder; a Kanji Japanese Symbol for “Family” just under the former; Left arm- Tribal Taurus symbol for his father; while Robert Sr was never one for Zodiacs, he’d always enjoyed that his ‘sign’ was the bull, symbolizing strength. Chest- Eckhart Tolle quote: “When you lose touch with inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself. When you lose touch with yourself, you lose yourself in the world.” Lower Abdomen- “In Loving Memory; Reynolds, With Me Always” for the friend he lost overseas. Ankle- “RSH”, the initials of the Clarington kids, who were each others best friends until they settled in Texas.

3 trends to watch in the Chinese New Year
For those celebrating the Lunar New Year, 2020 is the Year of the Rat, the first of the 12-year cycle of animals that name the years. In Chinese mythology, a race was held to determine the rank of the twelve Chinese zodiacs. You might be wondering how could the tiny creature beat tigers and dragons to win the first-place honor?  Legend has it that the Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride in the race, and as they arrived at the finish line, the Rat jumped down and landed ahead of the Ox.
Coincidentally, 2020 marks both the start of a brand-new decade and a 12-year cycle in the lunar calendar. For investors, then, this could be a good time to look ahead to future trends that could shape China’s economy, and impact investors. These include:
1. Financial market reform
Under the U.S. and China’s phase one trade deal signed in January, China has pledged to buy additional U.S. goods and to improve protection of intellectual property rights. In addition, China is committed to open up its domestic financial market by allowing more foreign capital access.
China announced last year that it would remove the quota limits on two cross-border investment schemes, Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor and Renminbi Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor, allowing more foreign players to enter China’s asset management, pension management and currency brokerage sectors.
After successful Chinese A shares index inclusions, additional bond index inclusions and the 11-point liberalization plan allowing foreign agencies to rate all bonds traded on local securities markets lead to growing foreign interest in Chinese fixed income markets this year.
For U.S. investors, this could mean more choice and better access to the companies benefiting from China’s growth.
2.Urbanization
For decades, China has experienced a massive internal migration of people from rural areas to the cities. Nonetheless, the “Hukou system,” a household registration system designed to regulate population distribution, limited the ability of people to move freely to the cities. In late last year, however, China lifted residency curbs in smaller cities, as well as increasing infrastructure spending. By relaxing the Hukou rules, rural migrants should find moving to and settling down in nearby cities much easier.
This could have a profound impact on the Chinese economy in the long run. As urban populations not only tend to have a higher income level on average, but also a higher consumption rate compared to rural residents, the increased urban population could boost consumption and revive slowing economic growth.
3. Technological innovation
While global markets celebrated U.S. and China’s agreement to sign a phase one trade deal, the tensions between the U.S. and China on technology is likely to persist in the long run. At the same time, China’s technological advancement is continuing.
China has placed higher strategic priority on domestic technological research and innovation. In 2018, China accounted for nearly half of global patent filings with a record 1.39 million applications (see Figure 2).[1]
While original scientific research in China still lags the U.S., China has proved itself more successful in business integration. For example, China rolled out the world’s largest 5G deployments with 130,000 base stations in 2019[2]. Continued government support and the low cost, high skill workforce, could abet China’s competitive advantage in technology. That in turn could contribute to its economic growth in the next few years.
After a decade of robust economic growth, China is likely to face challenges, including economic slowdown in the next few years. However, these trends could help to bring some new opportunities for U.S. investors. As China’s importance to the global economy continues to grow, it will be critical for investors to understand and monitor these developments in China.

Ad-tracker Kantar reported that the Women’s World Cup, which the U.S. team won in July, brought in an estimated $96 million in U.S. ad sales, more than double the company’s earlier estimate of $43 million. “Demand was high for the Women’s World Cup in the U.S.,” said Jeremy Carey, managing director at Omnicom Group sports ad buying agency Optimum Sports. “[Fox] sold every impression they could sell.” Kantar’s initial projection "did not include ad revenue generated by Spanish-language networks owned by Comcast Corp.’s NBCUniversal, including Telemundo, which accounted for about 11%" of the $96 million. Strong ad sales and ratings for a World Cup reflect team popularity and translate into revenue for U.S. Soccer. According to the Wall Street Journal, the "flood of ad dollars highlights the appeal of the tournament on Madison Avenue and its ability to drive revenue for TV networks." There’s been an “awakening” in terms of how brand clients are thinking about the Women’s World Cup.
As Oklahoma football celebrates its 125th year in program history, longtime OU partner Coca-Cola will pay tribute to the program by serving as “OU 125” presenting sponsor and introducing an integrated fan campaign for 2019-2020. According to Cynopsis Sports, fans can purchase commemorative 8-oz. glass Coca-Cola bottles customized with the OU 125 logo available while OU-branded 20-oz. Coke or Coke Zero Sugar bottles will offer an exclusive augmented reality feature showcasing milestone Sooner football moments with a cell phone and OU app. Coca-Cola also is developing an OU 125 photo mosaic built over the season through pre-game fan festivities during home games and online. This week, after an early season bye, OU dives into conference action against Texas Tech on the road to another target CFP semifinal berth. The OU-Coca-Cola tie up is only one of dozens of brand activations around college football’s big sesquicentennial celebration this year.
Online lender Social Finance, known as SoFi, will pay more than $30 million annually for the next 20 years to entitle the new NFL stadium under construction in Los Angeles, making it the largest deal in U.S. naming rights history. According to multiple sources, the partnership eclipses the previous NFL high-water mark of $20 million annually at MetLife Stadium, and Chase’s $30 million annual deal with MSG for extensive promotional rights that stop short of entitlement. It may also eclipse Scotiabank’s $40 million deal to rename Air Canada Centre in Toronto in 2017. SoFi’s CEO is Anthony Noto, the NFL’s former CFO. Along with stadium rights, SoFi becomes a sponsor of both tenants, the Chargers and Rams, and will sponsor the adjacent performance venue. SoFi becomes one of Silicon Valley’s biggest sports spenders; it has spent more than $200 million annually on marketing in recent years. It currently claims 800,000 members, with products including student loans, mortgages, personal loans, and wealth management. The company believes the venue will help it become a household financial brand.
Endeavor IPO is back on, aims to raise about $600 million.  After a postponement in early August, entertainment giant Endeavor Group filed revised paperwork with the SEC as they move forward with an IPO. The company plans to offer approximately 19.35 million shares of stock for sale, at an estimated price of $30 to $32 per share. (As usual, the underwriters have an option for additional shares.) The company estimates they will received net proceeds of $547-$632 million after expenses. Public investors will own a piece of a money-losing company that carries $4.57 billion in long-term debt. And it will be firmly controlled by the top two executives (Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell) and the controlling investor, Silver Lake Partners; together they will control about 88.5% of the voting power. Endeavor has expanded far beyond its traditional talent agency roots. In the past few years it has acquired the UFC mixed-martial arts circuit, fashion, and sports management group IMG, the Professional Bull Riders tour and streaming provider NeuLion. The transactions are key reasons why the company reported $4.5 billion in debt as of June 30.
The NHL and NHLPA are "believed to be making progress towards a potential three-year extension" of the CBA that would run through 2025, according to Sportsnet. The NHLPA's decision yesterday "not to trigger an early end to the current agreement ... should also raise hopes that an even longer extension might be in the offing." This development is a "welcome change for a league that has experienced three straight lockouts" and saw the entire 2004-2005 season "shuttered before the salary cap was instituted." It has "come about because the owners feel they have a fair system where revenues are split 50-50 and the cap is tied to the overall growth of the business." The NHL had "previously let its own deadline to re-open the CBA pass on September 1." Had the players "decided to trigger" a September 2020 end to the CBA, there was "some fear that it might derail the positive bargaining" that has already happened. Now the work can "continue without the semi-imminent threat of a deadline.” Commissioner Gary Bettman said that the league is "pleased with the players’ decision and looked 'forward to continuing to work with the NHLPA for the benefit of all stakeholders.'"
Emmy Awards force WNBA playoff game to move venues. The WNBA L.A. Sparks' semifinal game on Sunday against the Connecticut Sun marked the end of the Sparks’ season, all without "playing a single game in their usual home arena" during the series. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Emmys were being "held across the street at Microsoft Theater," but Staples Center was being used for the event as well. The Sparks, who "average over 10,000 fans per game, settled on the 4,000-seat Walter Pyramid at Cal State Long Beach" for Sunday's game. This was the fifth playoff game since 2015 the Sparks have had to "play away from Staples Center." Meanwhile, a previously booked event "prevented the Sparks from practicing at their temporary home" on Saturday, "forcing them to go to a local community college." Piling on these indignities, the Sparks were swept by the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA semis; the Sun now face the Las Vegas Aces in the finals.
Digital media rights will be the key driver for the growth of the sports industry over the next five years, with the fourth edition of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Sports Survey predicting growth in that sector of up to 9.7%. While the PwC paper is enthusiastic on the unrealized potential of digital, it does cast doubts as to whether sports organizations can benefit from online growth, with concerns that the major technology firms will instead be the ones to reap the benefits as both gatekeepers and producers of content. Also a factor, according to the study, will be “much lower growth rates” seen across traditional media streams, which are estimated to be at no more than 4.1% during the same period. Overall, the PwC paper does paint a positive picture of the overall sports market, predicting the industry to grow at a healthy annual rate of 6.4% over the next three to five years. That is below the 7.4% growth of the past three to five years, however, the study insists growth remains "robust."

The Trump administration has announced a national youth sports strategy that will reach beyond in-school physical education and into community-based programs. It will be funded by a legacy endowment with a goal of raising $100 million to provide grants intended to drive increased participation. Developed by the Department of Health & Human Services and the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition, the strategy largely will mirror a draft report issued in June. That report echoed many of the recommendations of those who previously studied participation declines, including the Aspen Institute’s Project Play. Among the focus areas: Recruiting and training of coaches and volunteers, creation of safe places to play, provision of quality equipment and strategies to increase participation among girls. Among the first to sign on in support of the endowment is NBC Sports Group’s Sports Engine -- a leading software provider for youth sports organizations -- which will offer a Premier League Fan Fest trip and other prizes in a sweepstakes to raise funds for the NEYS. Other founding supporters include the NHL, MiLB, UFC, Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the AAU, the Sports & Fitness Industry Association and Boston Scientific.
Athletes attend Harvard to “Crossover Into Business.” The program, taught by Harvard Business School professor Anita Elberse, is "built to help professional athletes be better prepared for business activities during and after their active sports careers,” per Harvard's course description. Participants will each be matched with a pair of Harvard Business School MBA student mentors who will “develop their business acumen and empower them to make better business decisions.” The program is tailored to fit athletes' schedules and interests all while leveraging the "acclaimed Harvard Business School case method.” Athletes taking part in the latest cycle of Harvard Business School's Crossover Into Business program, according to the Boston Herald, include: figure skater Ashley Wagner; tennis players Caroline Wozniacki, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, and Andrea Petkovic; former NFLer Will Beatty; Knicks forward Reggie Bullock; Magic forward Amile Jefferson; NBA free agent Jose Calderon; and former NBAer David Lee. Last year NBA star Kyrie Irving attended the program, along with former NFL tight end Martellus Bennett; NBA players Paul Millsap, Zaza Pachulia, and Spencer Dinwiddie; and other athletes from the WNBA, MLS, UFC, and the American Ballet Theater.
Officials from MLS, the Independent Supporters Council, and supporters groups of the Timbers and Sounders met for "more than three hours on Thursday in Las Vegas" regarding the league's Fan Code of Conduct policy, and agreed to "continue talks on Tuesday," according to Soccer America. The meeting was called in an effort to resolve an ongoing dispute over the "ban on the display of Iron Front flags or banners" at MLS games. Supporters "want MLS to work with international experts on human rights to craft language in the Fan Code of Conduct that reflects and supports radical inclusion and anti-discrimination." MLS proposed an "evaluation of the treatment of the Iron Front flag" for the remainder of the 2019 season and a "broader evaluation of the Fan Code of Conduct.” Timbers Owner and CEO Merritt Paulson "praised the efforts of the two sides." He said, "We have always been advocates for soccer supporters uniquely having a right to exercise their voice on matters of human rights at games.” MLS has confirmed that for now, its policy banning the Iron Front flag remains.
The San Diego Padres are fine with Petco Park hosting the annual KAABOO festival beginning next September. The team has "taken strides to greatly improve how it protects the ballpark's playing surface," according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Padres President of Business Operations Erik Greupner said that the team "upgraded the protective flooring it uses during in-season non-baseball events a couple years ago." The ballpark in recent years has hosted several concerts and Comic-Con with "no visible damage to the field.” KAABOO, an "upscale music, comedy, art and culinary festival" set to be held September 18-20, 2020, is heading to Petco "after being held for its first five years at the Del Mar Racetrack and adjacent fairgrounds." There is a multiyear contract to hold the event at the ballpark, and Padres season ticket holders will have "access to a special 'loyalty discount'" for the festival. Greupner said landing KAABOO is a "fulfillment of our promise to the people of San Diego that this publicly funded ballpark will (have) more than just baseball."

The Travelers Championship in Connecticut raises $2.1 million for 150 local charities. According to the Hartford Courant, representatives from all of the charities — including the primary beneficiary, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp — were at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell last Tuesday to receive their respective shares. Since taking over as the title sponsor in 2007, Travelers has generated a charitable haul of nearly $20 million. The Travelers Championship donates 100% of its net proceeds to charity, and this year's effort brings the amount generated by the tournament to nearly $20 million since Travelers became title sponsor in 2007. At least 750 charities have benefited over that time. Next year, the tournament will have a huge international name added to the list in the likes of Reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year Rory McIlroy, which will bring even more charity attention to the event.

Even though it is just Curry’s first charity tournament, the event proves his popularity as all 50 two-person teams were filled. The intent was to raise $1 million and the tournament was able to nearly achieve that goal by totaling $975,000.

The brand will also give away Secret products, T-shirts and spirit towels to the first thousand fans at one game in each city. The effort follows an ad Secret launched in March promoting equal pay for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team and a $529,000 donation split across the 23 USWNT players in July after it won the Women’s World Cup. Brands have been backing women’s sports, which have also seen a resurgence of interest in broadcast time thanks to digital platforms.
