May Book Reviews: The Castaway Prince by Isabelle Adler

Picked this one up because another book by the author was recommended to me (sapphic arranged political marriage) but alas, the library didn't have it. Genderqueer prince Stephen flees his country in order to seek refuge with the only man he trusts, an ex-lover in a rival kingdom.

This isn't a novel-- in fact, it's practically a short story at less than sixty pages long. The plot suffers a bit from the short length. In my opinion, romance plotlines aren't very effective at novella length, as everything always feels very rushed. Put this one in the same pile as Megan Derr-- very readable, but not very good and with a shaky grasp on political worldbuilding.

I started watching Kdramas this year and I do a lot of literature analysis in my normal life, so I found it really fun to find the tropes that were unique to this genre/culture that were different than what I find in Hollywood TV/movies and novels. I started with Alchemy of Souls and I was kind of amused looking back, because I never thought the SML had a chance with the FL but if I had known how strong the "they met as children and therefore DESTINY" trope is, I probably would have thought they would get together for sure!

Here are some of the unique tropes I've noticed:

-Leads meet as children and therefore DESTINY (What's Wrong with Secretary Kim, 100 Days My Prince, It's Okay to Not be Okay, Castaway Diva, The King's Affection, Sh**ting Stars, Destined with You, subverted in Alchemy of Souls)

-Reincarnation, which happens a ton but of course for the same reason Western media is littered with Chosen One/Saviour plots (played with in Alchemy of Souls and Extraordinary You, straight in Destined with You, Tale of the Nine Tailed, Moon in the Day, My Demon, The Story of Park's Marriage Contract... so many)

-Guy (usually) buys the girl shoes and then puts them on her. They also usually make a joke about her running away. (Tale of the Nine Tailed, 100 Days My Prince, Extraordinary You, Castaway Diva, King the Land, subverted in The King's Affection and The Forbidden Marriage)

-Guy (usually) gives/brings the girl an umbrella to protect her from the rain. I LOVE THIS TROPE, symbolism for protection and shelter gets me (straight in My Lovely Liar, King the Land, Tale of the Nine Tailed, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, subverted/played with in Alchemy of Souls, Business Proposal, Doom at Your Service, Castaway Diva)

-Not sure if this would count as a trope, but unique to the genre because we don't have formal speech in English and especially not in Canada where I live (we've basically started just going first name with everyone) I love it so much when the main characters use informal terms with each other for the first time. The subtitles don't always translate this well, but I know what the honorifics sound like and I'm all, "She didn't use "Mr." that time it's serious now!!!"

Anyway, are there more? I'm probably not catching them all!

Edit: Definitely some sort of trope around characters finding wild ginseng to solve a problem.

(I've only been watching Korean dramas by the way, I'm sure some of these tropes are shared by other dramas from China and Thailand. I just found the comparison with English language TV interesting.)

I hate to suggest this, but what if Ethari has moved on. I know Callum waited for Rayla for 2 years, but there was a good chance she was alive and would come back. Ethari fully believes Runaan has been dead for 2 years. We have no idea what Ethati been doing all this time. What if he found someone else?

I have brain thoughts tonight so I'm gonna talk a little about my different dimension Silvers. Also a little about stuff I noticed about Sonic Prime because I dunno if I've seen anyone talk about it but y'know I probably just haven't looked at enough posts.

Anyways, in Sonic Prime it sorta caught my attention that the different dimensions have the character's aspects split between the different versions. This makes sense given the whole shattered nature of everything but I like it a lot. Like characters have certain aspects amplified or twisted depending on the universe.

Anyways for Silver I wanted to list off some differences between Nickel (New Yoke), Dust (Boscage Maze), and Castaway (No Place) because they have different levels of control over telekinesis as well as different timeline placements because I wanted to play with that idea.

Nickel was pulled from the distant future by the Chaos Council and had his memory wiped and was also given mechanical enhancements in order to be used as a prototype bioweapon. So he has involvement in the future but poor control over telekinesis because of his memory loss, he lost his experience with his powers basically.

Dust on the other hand is not from the future but does have a small amount of time manipulation, he uses it to grow plants quickly. He also has the best control over his telekinesis out of the 3 given he had to survive as a hidden away outcast.

Castaway is my personal favorite out of the 3, he's from the future but accidentally jumped time when he was very young and grew up completely alone on a small but plentiful island. Due to it being peaceful he has no idea he has time abilities or telekinesis. He's just completely unaware because he's never had to use stuff like that and was too young to remember he's originally from the future.

This was such a long post and honestly anyone who reads my rambles gets a thanks from me, I need to get better putting my thoughts out like this. Still really new to Tumblr or anything like it still so I'm getting used to it.

Hey, do you have any more thoughts about the fable/mer pirates?

And also, can I write a fic with them?

When it comes to fics containing aus I make I’m always okay with people utilizing the characters as long as I get a minor credit!!! Feel free to change stuff too, if I'm sending things out into the world I'm assuming they'll be changed as people get ideas for them

As for thoughts I did a lot of thinking for the guys of the "Wolfs pirates" on my art stream last night but here’s some basics:

Mer!Centross is somehow related to Nel but doesn’t have almost any mer traits besides purple coloring. He’s a violent pirate and the ships gunner and shipwright. I definitely see him as being a notorious pirate who got caught up with wolf somehow. Mer!Wolf goes by wolf because like in Fable he is a prince but the kingdom actually still exists and something happened that made him unable to return home. He got castawayed and stuck with this one dipshit pirate who he got unreasonably attached to and now is a pirate captain. The mask is to hide his face so people don't recognize him. He is the ships Captain and Helmsman Mer!Ari chat and i talked about being part regular mer (soraza, a flying fish mer) and part exorian. Ari was partially raised in the nether by Soraza so she has some exorian beliefs and behaviors but also doesn't lean fully into them. Overall if I had to describe her personality- she is sort of like Vexxed Ari but uses it as a front to survive. The way she genuinely acts and thinks is more akin to normal Arisanna. Shes the ships Navigator and quartermaster. She also gets gun rights Mer!Oscar is still a regular piglin. Ari picked him up when still living in the nether sometime after they lost Soraza and he becomes the crews cabin boy. he's still heavily impulsive like in fable (centross probably gave him a musket instead of a crossbow) and he likely is sort of a glue that helps them together when times are rough.

Overall I didn't think about anything beyond this. A lot of this got fueled by missing mer and fable respectively and watching a lot of One Piece recently. I'd love for them to have more members (Aax would have been added had he not already had a mersmp counterpart and I heavily considered Neveah)
