Summer 1996. Speaking of getting real: Barbara Gordon confronts Batman about the events of THE KILLING JOKE, in which she was paralyzed by the Joker. This is part of John Ostrander's other major contribution to DC lore; in SUICIDE SQUAD, he and Kim Yale had revived Babs, who had been summarily discarded by Bat-books editor Denny O'Neil as surplus to requirements and also a girl, and reinvented her as Oracle. This scene is from the first story in THE BATMAN CHRONICLES #5, which is not her first appearance as Oracle, but rather an "Oracle: Year One" story chronicling the circumstances of how she created that role. It's infuriating to me that DC has since discarded this version of Barbara Gordon in order to reduce her to Dick Grayson's girlfriend, while also trying to make her younger and younger.

Ok so this is me more of extrapolating potential characterization through writer changes rather than just saying "this is what happened under this writer" like I did in my previous Talia post (link)
but having re-read all the ra's and talia appearances from the first one to bride of the demon in chronological order
Talia seems to be fine working against Bruce if it is just giving him problems, like helping ra's frame him for her murder to bust her dad out of prison. when she works against her father it seems to be when the stakes are high, like when ra's was about to kill a bunch of people using his sun and water based superweapon or when bruce (and allies) are at serious risk of dying.
which like. Talia frames it as "the Batman is the one man I'll never go against" but like this I feel it works well if Bruce is kind of like. a convenient avatar upon which Talia can fully articulate the moral differences she already has from her father -- given that when she is working with her dad (against bruce) the stakes are lower and what she is asked to do is less objectionable to her. It especially makes sense more as an ideological conflict under Mike Barr's writing, where Talia starts investigating the crimson son plot before Bruce ever gets involved. She chooses to try to stop her dad based just on what her dad is doing, not based on 'bruce is against my dad'.
and this works really well with later Talia, who's motives are divorced from Bruce's character completely (thinking of lexcorp arc)
And like in Batman Chronicles 8 it is made explicit that she loves Bruce, but that he also represents freedom for her.
Tumblr media
which I don't think it's wrong to extend that to also freedom to her own ideology/moral code, especially given that this plotline started with her doing something against her moral code to try to prove her loyalty to her father (helping him hunt down the people who intended on defecting from the league)

Duke Thomas gets added to the payroll
Bruce Wayne (seeing Duke walk past his office): Duke.
Duke backwards walked to Bruce’s office.
Duke: Sup?
Bruce: Did you check your bank account? The direct deposit should’ve hit.
Duke: The what? Oh you were serious about that?
Bruce: Of course, you’re not only my son, but you do work for me and you deserve an income.
Duke: Thanks dude, but I can’t take your money I work at the library.
Bruce: Duke, trust me. You deserve this. I do it for all my kids… except Tim.
Duke: Why not Tim?
Bruce: Long story… he owns part of my company, plus he- he definitely embezzled a lot of my funds before I noticed so him working at my company is his paycheck.
Duke (alarmed): That was him?!
Bruce: Yeah, but that’s not important currently. You enjoy your first payhcheck and I’m proud of you.
Duke: Thanks man.
Duke left the office, checking his phone as he walked to his room. He nearly dropped his phone seeing the four digits in his bank account that had five dollars in it three days ago.
Duke (shocked, happy): Three- Three thousand dollars?! Woooooooo! I’m eating good tonight! No wait, game stop here I come!
Duke ran out the house passing by Stephanie and Jason.
Duke: I can finally buy a PlayStation!
Jason: Wait until he finds out it’s a monthly payment.
Stephanie: I’ll tell him later. Want to go tell Tim about it first?
Jason: 100% yes.

imagine the brooding, intimidating Batman fighting criminals in the street when he hears this special ringtone in the comms and they're for specific people: his grandkids.
he has to hide in the shadows and goes Grandpa mode, clears his throat and coos lovingly to the comms to talk them.
Nightwing: Oh, he's cooing again.
Red Hood: Lian must have called and asked for more fruit loops.
or
Spoiler: B's doing that baby voice again, it's kinda creepy.
Red Robin: My baby must have dialed, he likes his grandpa's voice.
The rest of the batkids: WHAT BABY?????
Superboy: Our baby.
the batkids curse in different languages, confused and shocked.
***
when some of the rogues or criminals hear Batman in his Grandpa mode, they think he's gone soft.
nope. he's more determined, more restless, more protective, so he won't stop unless they're in Akrham or in jail.
but it's worth it when he comes home to little kids, who are excited to see him.

@mothman-etd had a job contract interview today, and when they got to the "Do you have any further questions for me" segment, the woman doing the interview said, "No, can't think of anything," paused, then said, "No, actually, whose your favorite Batman?"
And @mothman-etd, who has been living with the irradiated fallout of my current Batman hyperfixation for the last six months just started laughing.
His answer was "Adam West," in case you were wondering.
The interviewer apparently loved this because she started talking to him about how Batman is best when he's a little silly while he smiled and nodded along before telling her, "My wife would agree. Tell me, do you like The Muppets..."

Robin!Jason Todd tried secretly listening to an audiobook one night because crime was super slow and there was a stakeout and he had to keep an eye on everything, but it’s boring.
It worked out well, so he starts doing it more often.
Sometimes he doesn’t get the chance to turn it off or tune it out during a fight, so he then sometimes ends up reacting to the book out loud involuntarily, like saying “what?!” and “no!” in front of bad guys.
It still goes on for another couple weeks until Batman figured out what’s been going on and bans audiobooks on patrols.
(Jason still does it during stakeouts. It’s not patrol)

the batfamily would NOT be on social media at all realistically, but of course tim loooooves photography, so i think he'd be a super dedicated scrapbook-mom type instead. (to compensate for the incredible instagram posts he WOULD make)
like, he's got books for each of his friends, one for each family member, and multiple for pictures of parts of the family and all of them together (although rare). he even has separate books for people in-costume and out-of-costume.
every christmas + birthday he recieves a loooooot of scrapbooking materials, he has draws of washi tape and stickers in his room.
he definitely tries his best to match the themes of the pages to the people in them too, and not one book has the same feel to it. he always writes very sincere little captions under the pictures as well. if he wasn't so attached to the books, he'd give them as gifts.

In honour of Talia being written terribly in the new web comic here's the comic everyone who writes Talia should be forced to read before doing anything

The Batman Chronicles (1995) Issue 8
This comic shows the inner monologue of Talia when she's given a mission to kill Bruce
This comic is so overlooked despite being one of the most important comics for her character. It also goes into depth with her relationship with Ra's and his possessive nature over her. Back when this was released Talia's character was about wanting freedom away from Ra's and being torn between this need for freedom and her loyalty towards him, this aspect of Talia's character is often ignored in favour of using her a villain.
What you'll find if you do go back and compare Talia's original character to how she is written now in both cannon comics but also fan interpretations is that very little of her original character remains. For this reason I will always recommend anyone wanting to write about Talia or just get into her character start at this comic as it gives a really inadept show of how her mind works.
