Two bomb explosions near candidates' offices in the Pakistani province of Balochistan killed at least 28 people and wounded dozens on the eve of general elections, officials said.
The first blast killed 16 people in Pishin district, north of Quetta city.
A second explosion left 12 people dead in Qila Saifullah to the east. There was no immediate claim for the attacks.
The vote has been marred by violence and claims of poll-rigging. Former PM Imran Khan is barred from contesting.
Police are still trying to determine the cause of the two blasts.
Resource-rich Balochistan - Pakistan's largest, and poorest, province - has a history of violence. It has seen a decades-long struggle for greater autonomy by various groups, some of them armed. Islamist militants, including the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), operate along the border with Afghanistan.
The bomb in Pishin, a town about 100km (62 miles) south-east of the Afghan border, went off in front of an independent candidate's party office. The provincial authorities said 25 people were also wounded.
Images on social media showed cars and motorbikes blown apart by the force of the explosion. Officials told the BBC the candidate was meeting his polling agent at the time.
The second blast targeted the election office of the JUI-F party. A senior police official told AFP news agency it took place in the main bazaar of Qila Saifullah, about 190km (120 miles) east of Quetta.
Twenty people were wounded in the incident and the number of casualties in the two attacks could rise, officials said.
There have been violent incidents in both Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces in the week before Thursday's vote, and the violence in Pishin and Qila Saifullah was not unexpected.
In mid-January, Baloch Liberation Army-Azad (BLA) insurgents released a pamphlet after claiming responsibility for bombing an election training office. The pamphlet urged people to boycott the elections. Soon after, reports of hand grenade attacks on political party offices were reported from various cities in the province.
Many voters in Balochistan feel neglected by the country's political parties, given the province has so few seats in parliament. They often feel candidates are foisted on them, with few if any links to Balochistan.
And many feel the vote is unfair. "It is a selection," numerous people told BBC Urdu in the city of Turbat last month.
Following Wednesday's attacks, the Balochistan government said Thursday's vote would proceed as planned.
"Rest assured, we will not allow terrorists to undermine or sabotage this crucial democratic process," provincial information minister Jan Achakzai posted on X, formerly Twitter.
More than 128 million voters are eligible to cast ballots in the election. In Pakistan's first-past-the-post system, 266 of 336 National Assembly seats are directly elected.
But many people are questioning the credibility of the vote as Khan and his party, the PTI, have been sidelined.
The PTI won the largest number of seats in the last general election but Khan was jailed on corruption charges last year and disqualified from running for public office. Last week he was convicted in three other cases and faces years in prison - he says all the charges are politically motivated.
The authorities deny carrying out a crackdown, but many PTI leaders are behind bars, in hiding or have defected. Thousands of the party's supporters were rounded up after protests - at times violent - when Khan was taken into custody last year.
PTI candidates are having to run as independents following the electoral commission's decision to strip the party of its cricket bat symbol. Electoral symbols are vital in helping voters mark their ballots in a country with high rates of illiteracy.
The man tipped to win Thursday's election is three-time former PM Nawaz Sharif, who himself was behind bars at the last election. Analysts say it appears he has done a deal with the military to facilitate his return to politics.
A high turnout will be key to the PTI's chances, many analysts say. How to tackle, and who to blame for, the country's economic crisis will be high in voters' minds. Results must be announced within 14 days of the election.

A dive into the archives

Image 1: My maternal family at a wedding Dawat in post-partition Lahore, Pakistan (1977) The groom, who happens to be my Mamoo (maternal uncle) is adorned with shiny headwear and garlands sewn with cash notes. The colourful, patterned shamiana tent veiling the Dawat is a common occurrence in banquet halls even today. Dawats also serve as the ideal opportunity to get multiple family members and kin together for a group portrait, a crucial and vital method of documenting a visual record of humans that are often overlooked and erased from history and whose lived experiences have been minimized and rendered invisible by colonial hegemonies.

Image 2: My maternal grandfather, F.D Chaudhry, a soldier in the British Army, hosting his British and German friends at a small Dawat in post-partition Lahore, Pakistan (1950) These are foreign families that chose to remain in Pakistan after the partition of the country from India, but have since returned to their respective homelands.

Image 3: My mother, Mohtarma Rubina Magsi, celebrating Shab-e-Barat, a major Dawat for the global Muslim community, honoured in the month of Sha'ban in the Islamic calendar (1980s) After finishing our prayers in new clothes, we would head outside into the garden to play with sparklers and light little diyas (oil lamps made from clay) all around the boundary walls of our home. The deceased are honoured on this day and the festival is celebrated in unique ways in Muslim countries around the world, depending on the country and culture.

Image 4: Mohtarma Rubina Magsi surrounded by her singing and clapping women friends ( Late 1970s) They are taking turns playing the dhol (drum). Often a sturdy, silver spoon is also hit onto the center of the dhol to add depth to the music. Some guests may even reach for a dufflee (tambourine) and clap it against their henna stained palms. The music can range from orally transmitted folk songs to Bollywood hits from across the border. Healthy competition is fostered as guests attempt to outdo one another with an impressively long array of memorized songs.

Image 5: A duo collage of community elders veiling my hair and face with heavy garlands of vibrant, red rose flowers to mark the Rasm-e-Ameen, a Dawat hosted to honour the completion of formal Quranic education. The customary prayers are followed by a large buffet style banquet feast. (1993)

Image 6: Guests enjoying their banquet dinner on a round table after the Rasm-e-Ameen. A waiter holding a tray with glasses watches over the banquet tables to ensure the guests are looked after. (1993)

Image 7: A women prioritized Dawat-e-Milad in praise of Prophet Muhammad, hosted at our home in Karachi, Pakistan. Though veiling of the hair is not an imposition in Pakistan, even at women prioritized religious, cultural and spiritual events such as these, both Muslims and non-Muslims loosely cover their hair momentarily, out of respect. (1995)

Image 8: A birthday banquet to honour the day I was born. It is interesting to note, that while traditional, cultural garments are prioritized for certain events, like the Dawat-e-Milad, Rasm-e-Ameen or a wedding Dawat, western clothing, games and food is often engaged at Dawats such as birthdays and graduations. (1994)

Image 9: Generation after generation, the visibility of women in documentations of family life has increased. This is a family photograph taken on my birthday Dawat (1993) with my mother at the center, surrounded by children, and caregivers from the Philippines and our ancestral lands, Jhal Magsi, Balochistan. I was truly raised by a multi-generational, diverse village of people from all corners of the world. While some members of our family are wearing western clothing, others are dressed in traditional, cultural garments and have chosen to veil their hair.

Image 9: A spiritual, Sufi Dawat at the Taji Shrine in Meva Shah, Karachi. My mother is adorning our family's Sufi saint (Baba Anwar Shah Taji) with heavy garlands of red roses. (1980) While flowers are given feminine traits in various cultures around the world, in many South and Central Asian countries, such as India, Pakistan and Nepal, flowers are a gender neutral way of showing love and adoration through the art of ornamentation. After the customary Sufi rituals are complete, the congregation gathers side by side on the floor to consumer Langar, a meal that is served to everyone in attendance, at no cost. The Langar menu can vary from week to week, consisting of curries, rice dishes, naans and sweets, and no one is turned away from the doors of the shrines when Langar is served. Whether cis or trans, male or female, able or disabled, rich or poor, local or foreign, everyone is welcome here. In some shrines the genders are segregated.
Most Dawats in Pakistan mark important life milestones, like births, birthdays, weddings, graduations and are also influenced by cultural traditions and religious rituals, varying from household to household, depending on cast, clan, socioeconomic standing, province and religion.
There are some motifs and symbols that make a recurring appearance, era after era, such as rose petals and night blooming jasmine flowers, shamiana tents, cauldrons of Biryani, unisex garlands and head coverings made with either cash or flowers (or both), various forms of veiling (with both textiles and flowers), the dhol (drum) and of course, endless cups of Chai. Of the various significant Dawats that take place throughout the year, apart from events like birthdays and weddings, certain religious Dawats like Shab-e-Baraat (a major festival for Muslims celebrated in the month of Sha'ban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar) Rasm-e-Ameen (formal completion of Quranic education), Urs (death anniversaries of Saints and Mystics), Milad (events fostered in praise of Prophet Muhammad) and Niyaz (Meditative chanting and prayers followed by distribution of food amongst the needy) also encompass specific rituals and customs. As visible in the archives, there was also a healthy mix of retaining local, familial customs and traditions, while also engaging with clothing, games, food and rituals from cultures outside of Pakistan.
For example, every New Year’s Eve, it was customary in our home to consume a large feast of purely Filipino food, made by our caregiver, Flordeliza Sauza. Right as the clock would strike midnight, you best believe, we would be shoving Siopao, Pansit and Chicken Adobo with garlic rice into our excited, hungry mouths. Similarly, Chinese food was also a staple, especially at birthday parties and weddings. My wedding Dawat feast in Karachi included several desi Kababs, Curries and Puloas originally devised in the royal kitchens of India, but many Chinese dishes were also served, such as Chicken Manchurian, Beef Chilli, Shrimp Dumplings and Vegetable Fried Rice. This is reflective of a society that is open to global influences.
Women have been at the forefront of cultural continuity in Pakistan, as well as in the diaspora. Religiously inclined Dawats, such as the Milad and the Rasm-e-Ameen often take place in women prioritized spaces, with multi-generational guests in attendance, fostering community and togetherness. One of my favourite moments from the Milad Dawat has to do with guests being showered with delicate, soft sprinkles of rose water, while standing side by side, singing and praying in a unique moment of women's solidarity. In some Milad Dawats, guests are not only showered with droplets of Rose Water, they are also covered with petals from red roses, making the experience truly immersive and embodied.

So, a little different (but I post it, since I'm pretty sure you never heard of this)
🔥🚨 Urgent Call to Action: Balochistan Under IRGC Attack! 🚨🔥
In the heart of Balochistan, a fierce battle rages against the oppressive IRGC regime, led by the brave souls of the Baloch resistance. Recent events in Bampur County have illuminated the unwavering spirit of the Baloch people in their fight for freedom.
In Jekigur Rask, a Baloch fuel transporter fell victim to the ruthless aggression of military forces. The citizens, outraged by this heinous act, clashed with the oppressors, refusing to bow down. The military forces attempted to seize the fuel transporter, firing directly at the entrance of Jekigur, igniting a conflict fueled by the residents' protest.
On November 1, 2023, the Baloch resistance struck a blow against tyranny, leaving five Iranian troops in the dust. One IRGC agent, known as "Ali Ghorbani," paid the price for his involvement in the regime's atrocities. Four others were injured in a heroic ambush on a Bampour police patrol, a testament to the relentless determination of the Baloch fighters.
The Ansar al-Furghan armed group, a beacon of hope for Balochistan, took responsibility for this courageous act. In a powerful statement on their Telegram group, they declared their actions as a direct response to the unjust shedding of Baloch youths' blood. Their message was clear: justice will prevail, and they will stop at nothing to protect their homeland.
In Mohammadan Bampur, the Baloch resistance faced yet another challenge. Unknown armed men targeted a police patrol car, resulting in casualties. The exact details remain shrouded in uncertainty, but what is undeniable is the bravery of the Baloch people, standing tall in the face of adversity.
As we stand witness to these events, it is our collective duty to amplify the voices of the Baloch people. We must raise awareness, demand justice, and condemn the atrocities committed by the oppressive IRGC regime. Let their bravery inspire us, let their resistance unite us, and let their cries for freedom echo across the world.
Share this message, spread the word, and stand in solidarity with Balochistan. Together, we can make a difference.

With the compliments from, the Directorate General Public Relations,
Government of the Punjab, Lahore. 99201390
No.59/Zafar/Mujahid
HANDOUT (A)
CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif Announces to Establish Incubation Centre in Ghazi University DG Khan
Lahore, 20 January 2025: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has expressed her desire to provide Honhaar scholarships to students from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan as well. She announced establishment of an incubation centre at Ghazi University, Dera Ghazi Khan and directed to fulfill necessary educational needs of Ghazi University students. She while making a historic address at DG Khan during the Honhaar scholarship ceremony said, “A qualified, hardworking child will not be deprived of getting education in a higher educational institution for not being able to pay institutional fee. We do not belong to May 9 activists, we are from May 28. We are Pakistanis and the guardians of the honour of Pakistan. We disown and condemn doing humiliation to anyone but promote moral teachings. We do not believe in violence, and are the torch-bearers of knowledge, peace and development.”
She said, “Children should take prayers from their parents, if they get angry, do not respond to them in a harsh tone. My sons and daughters, respect your elders, do not be rude and refrain from exceeding your moral boundaries. I never want you to abuse anyone, a mother cannot incite her children to commit violence. Pakistan, besides facing other problems is also facing serious problem of fake news. Children should not believe in social media posts without verification. The previous government did nothing for the well-being and development of Pakistan for the last four years. At the end they incited people to commit unlawful activities and laboured other as thieves.”
She added, “Children should keep Pakistan first and foremost before making any decision. Pakistan is our mother and we must pay loyalty to our dear motherland and should not commit treason to it. May it be not my government but Pakistan is mine. Even if PML-N does not hold its government, it cannot incite its followers to commit vandalism and other unlawful activities. Everyone should deem our country as a mother, I urge the youth to take every decision on 100% merit like Honhaar Scholarships. The power of decision lies in the hands of the youth, the youth are my courage, I cannot do anything alone. Using abusive language, disreputing others and those who resort to violent steps against your country are not your friends. Pakistan is our red line, martyrs, Rangers and Police belong to us. Those who put petrol bombs in the hands of our children instead of scholarships besides doing nefarious propaganda regarding the Honhaar scholarship is highly condemnable.”
She added, “I congratulate my sons and daughters who have received Honhaar scholarships from the bottom of my heart. Pay my felicitation to your parents and other family members on my behalf. I am proud of you more than your parents.I love my sons as much as I love my daughters. I have personally visited every division and given Honhaar scholarships to the children. I thank Allah Almighty that I personally went and handed over Honhaar scholarships to the talented children and listened to their problems. I listen to everything whatever the children say to me, even what they do not say is listened as well. The bond between mother and children which has been established is the biggest achievement of my life. I received a lot of love from children from every division, which is the biggest achievement of my life.”
CM Punjab said, “Every relationship in the world can be broken, but the bond between a mother and a child remains strong forever. The love, respect and trust of the youth is a great honour for me. I will visit you again soon with laptops and e-bikes. I want my sons and daughters to get their education free from the burden of paying their fees. The Punjab government is giving laptops to the children to equip them with modern technology so that they can continue their research and assignments. The response that is being received from the children, the opponents feel baffled over it. The opponents are finding a reason for accusation but the bonds which has been established with the children cannot be undone. The opponents label the Honhaar scholarship program a drama, they fail to know the importance of true love. They opened their eyes in lies and do not know about the relationship of love and trust.”
She said, “Children by showing their love to me has put a great burden of responsibility and hard work on my shoulders. I will respond to the love of my sons and daughters with more dedication and determination. We will launch more welfare schemes for them. I carry a heavy burden on my shoulders of fulfilling the dreams of my children along with improving their future. I want to fulfill their dreams in a nice manner. The truth is that there is no alternative to work hard day and night to improve the lives and education of our children. With great humility and the testimony of the children, I say with firm conviction that not a single scholarship out of 30,000 was given on any recommendation. Every child can testify that not a single scholarship was given on any violation of merit. If anyone tells me that a child received a scholarship on the recommendation of any Minister, MNA or MPA, I will resign. I am grateful to Allah Almighty for bestowing me with the courage to give the talented children their due right. When children express their gratitude to me on getting Honhaar scholarships, the should not say so as it is their right which is given to them.”
She added, “The children worked hard despite having limited resources and it is the result of their hard work. My sons and daughters, you are not heroes but superheroes. The Honhaar scholarship is a great achievement of my children, Allah Almighty has rewarded you for your hard work. Children should take pride in getting Honhaar scholarship. Pakistan is rich in many resources, 65% of these resources include our talented youth.”
She said, “In the next few years, this youth will lead Pakistan. No child should consider himself small or big, but you are the bright future of Pakistan. We will provide laptops and one lac e-bikes to the children soon. Just as I am the mother of my children, I am mother of the children of the nation as well. This year, 30,000 scholars have been given and next year, 50,000 scholarships will be given. We are introducing scholarships for second and third year children soon.” She added, “The Punjab government is also receiving applications from KPK children that they should also be given scholarships.”
She added, “I want to give scholarships to the children of KPK and Balochistan. Maryam Nawaz does not ask for anything in return but rather urges you to respect your parents and become their pride. A child whose parents pray for him does not fail in any field. Allah Almighty also feel pleased with the child with whom his/her parents are pleased. Allah Almighty has bestowed me with respect, and after the Grace of Allah Almighty, it is because of the prayers of my parents. I belong to Punjab, but Pakistani first. I will never persuade my followers to burn the metro bus and motorways. Muhammad Nawaz Sharif built motorways to connect Pakistan, he did not use them to attack Punjab from KPK. The activists set metro bus on fire, and it is run for the well being of people.”
She said, “Those who spread chaos have lured the youth to commit unlawful activities and sent them to jail. The anarchists have destroyed the future of Pakistan's children and their children are sitting abroad. When the worst enemy’s government remained in power, I heard the news of the death of my mother in jail and the sickness of my father, but did not ask anyone to burn the country. The government can be anyone's but Pakistan is ours. On the one hand, we want our children to study, progress while on the other hand, the anarchists are best upon sending your youth to jail by luring them to indulge into anarchist activities. Those who keep their children in Europe and send the country's children to jail are not sympathetic to them.”
She added, “Four years ago the inflation rate was at 38 percent inflation but today the inflation rate has come down to four percent. The price of roti was Rs.30 but today it is available at Rs.12. The poor eat roti and if it is available at cheap price then they can buy it easily. Every night before going to bed, I check the price of roti. On the one hand, nefarious elements spread terrorism while on the other hand, PML-N government promotes peace and development in the country. The children should choose the path of peace. On the one hand, there are those who shouted at the daughters of the nation in Madina while on the other hand there is a mother who teaches morality. I advise my sons and daughters that protectind honour of the women of the nation is your foremost responsibility.”

LONDON: Mr. Hyrbyair Marri, the President of the Free Balochistan Movement (FBM), has stated that Pakistan’s forced annexation of Balochistan was a violation of the region’s sovereignty and identity.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Marri wrote that Pakistan was systematically oppressing and exploiting the Baloch people, reducing their nation to a region defined by militarization, stagnation, and the denial of basic human rights.
“Pakistan forcibly annexed Balochistan, stripping it of its sovereignty and erasing its identity from the world map as a nation, reducing it to a region defined by oppression and exploitation,” Marri wrote.
He emphasised that decades of militarisation have stunted Balochistan’s development, enabling the plundering of its abundant natural resources, and leaving the Baloch people in a state of deprivation.
Marri’s statement also pointed to the widespread neglect of the Baloch people’s most fundamental right: the right to life. He criticised Pakistan’s media and intellectual elite for their silence regarding the suffering of the Baloch, accusing them of actively concealing the atrocities committed by Pakistan’s military in the region.
“In the face of such suffering, Pakistan’s so-called intelligentsia and self-proclaimed advocates of morality remain hesitant to speak out against the brutality faced by the Baloch nation,” Marri continued. “Yet, when protests by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Islamabad on November 24 led to public unrest, the media and civil society were quick to raise alarms about human rights violations and enforced disappearances.”
He further highlighted the hypocrisy of Pakistani civil society, which has shown little concern for the ongoing human rights abuses in Balochistan, while responding loudly to incidents in other parts of the country—particularly when military brutalities are directed at Pakistan’s own population, especially ethnic Punjabis.
In his post, Marri also noted that the recent experience of Pakistanis in Islamabad, who faced military crackdowns themselves, provides a glimpse into the brutalities that Baloch citizens have endured for decades. He emphasized that this highlights the double standards and lack of genuine human rights advocacy in Pakistan’s political and civil spheres.
The FBM president’s remarks shed light on the long-standing issues faced by the Baloch people under Pakistan’s occupation, urging the international community to take a more active role in addressing human rights violations and advocating for Balochistan’s independence.
Marri’s comments reflect growing dissatisfaction among the Baloch people, who argue that the international community has long ignored their suffering.

At least 190 people have been rescued from a train in Pakistan as of Wednesday after it was attacked one day prior and hundreds were taken hostage by the militant Balochistan Liberation Army, according to a Pakistani military official.
At least 17 people have been injured and 30 terrorists, members of the BLA, have been killed as a military operation continues, according to the official.
On Tuesday, a U.S. official told ABC News at least 450 people were taken hostage on the train and said six Pakistani military personnel were killed.
The separatist militant group claimed it had taken 182 military and security personnel hostage on the train, according to a post on Telegram, but said they had released the majority of the civilians on board. The group claimed a higher number of casualties in the attack, saying they killed 20 Pakistani military personnel and shot down a drone.
The BLA had threatened to kill all the hostages if Pakistan's military tries to rescue them, the official said.
The BLA blew up part of the track, forcing the train to stop, before they boarded and took control, according to the official.
The attack happened in mountainous area right before a tunnel, making a rescue very difficult, they said.
Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack and said the government would not make any concessions to "beasts who fire on innocent passengers."
The train was trapped in a tunnel after the tracks were blown up and militants opened fire on it, reportedly injuring the driver, local authorities and police have told media.
The BLA believes the Balochistan region of Pakistan, in the country's far west bordering Iran and Afghanistan, should be allowed to break off from Pakistan. They are well-known for committing terror attacks in Pakistan. The BLA also attacked Jaffar Express trains in August 2013 and October 2016.
