I'm here today to host a celebration of buying things, thinking they're so super cool, and then putting them away and never looking at them again. I could go on forever, but I got it, you want it, we can make a deal (no tongue).
Why is this happening? I'm shit broke and getting shitter. Going down like a Trump Casino. Guy paying his bills on time? I haven't heard that name in forever.
I've been taking care of my ailing father (tried to die on us three times so far this year) and the rest of my family (I don't owe you an explanation, cop) and then someone just up and decided to make my automobile a notomobile.
They didn't have insurance, but that's okay because we have full cov-*hand to ear*-what? We don't? Only comprehensive? Since when? FUCKING shit... Okay, but we still have uninsured motorist, so-four thousand? Four thousand. Dollars. $4,000. To replace an entire ass truck.
We are in desperate need of a car. I've got a lifetime of memories. You, on average, have some change sitting around. Can I have some? I'll trade you stuff.
I'm starting with my comics because they're easiest to catalogue. See something you like? HMU, as the kids say (please God don't let that be a sex thing) and I'll see what I can do. I'm giving the comic shop at which I used to work a vague preference, but I can be swayed.
Next up will be the trades and manga, DVDs of varied origin, toys, and so on.

Time period post: car culture
Getting a license is more than a right of passage, it’s integral. Getting a car is big- both for one’s reputation and social life, back in the day kids couldn’t wait to get their license…
In the 60s cars were becoming the dominant mode of transportation, it was getting more common for families to have more than one (if they could afford it) and so on. Though public transportation was still prevalent and reliable like bus and trolly systems… cars were a status/clout symbol for teenagers. You wanted the cool car, the nice car, the muscle car.
Automatic transmission, a variety of colors, bench seats, bigger, better, sleek. An interesting note is that people have been racing cars since they were invented, but particularly it started to ramp up professionally besides just troublesome teens, hobbiest and bootleggers.
I cannot emphasize enough how much the “car culture” began to be cemented in this period, the 60s is sometimes even referred to as the golden age of motoring. Movies and pop culture of nice slick cars helped cement that, growing trends of customization -> car centered architecture! Not only mid century modern and space age but Googie, meant to capture motorists eyes! Started in the 50s and carried on here.
Route 66!!! “Golden age of motoring” also means the golden age of road trips and tourist attractions, this route is still renown today though it’s mostly the remains of it (which did go through Tulsa!) it was one of the first national highways and later popularized in pop culture for its later touristy nature.
traffic on the highway increased, a growing share of it long-distance, and the need for food, fuel, repairs, and shelter transformed the economies of the towns through which the route passed. The development of novel methods of merchandising to the transient customer that became commonplace in mid-20th-century America—drive-in and drive-up businesses, fast food, motor inns, and roadside advertising—can to a great degree be traced to the influence of Route 66 in those towns.
It was decommissioned formally and completely by 1985, due to high speed highways— often decimating the small towns that came to rely on the traffic (think of Pixar’s cars lmao) it’s not the point of this post but it’s interesting I want to look into more and drive it someday.
Teen specific-
Back on track! The ideas of cars = freedom is about as old as cars themselves, they meant transportation and movement and independence. All things the American teenager craves, all the more if it looks cool and is both a place to hang out and one to take you to hang outs.
“Make out point” is a trope for a reason, the ability for teens to go off and have sex semi secluded was another huge factor for cars importance to teenagers. (Also a time when it is generally becoming less stigmatized/uptight culture)
Car dates generally. It’s private. Intimate and well a lot of ones social life was centered around them so why not your love life? -> there’s also something to be said here about the influence of consumerism too like how it’s why the ‘teenager’ came to be in the first place etc

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — With the calendar-page turn to 2024 on Monday comes 320 new state laws that Illinois residents will need to navigate.
Some will have a widespread effect, including a law banning semi-automatic rifles and another requiring paid time off. But others won’t have an immediate or noticeable impact, including a law that lets county governments consider a potential contractor’s participation in an approved apprenticeship program in determining the winning low bid for a project.
One law that took effect in 2019 but is still impacting tens of thousands of workers is an increase in the minimum wage. It increases to $14 an hour on Jan. 1 for non-tipped workers and will reach $15 in a year.
Here are some of the other major changes to Illinois state law as of New Year’s Day:
BAN ON SEMI-AUTOMATIC WEAPONS
The U.S. Supreme Court has failed to take up the case of Illinois’ ban on the sale, possession or manufacture of automatic weapons like the type used in a mass shooting at a 2023July Fourthparade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park.
The law bans dozens of specific brands or types of rifles and handguns, including .50-caliber guns, attachments and rapid-firing devices. No rifle will be allowed to accommodate more than 10 rounds, with a 15-round limit for handguns.
Those who previously purchased such guns must register them with the Illinois State Police by Jan. 1.
BOOK-BAN PROHIBITION
Libraries that indiscriminately ban books will not be eligible for state funds. They must adopt the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights stating “materials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation.”
The library association reported that attempts to censor books reached a 20-year high in 2022, especially those with LGBTQ+ themes and those written by people of color.
PAID TIME OFF
Employers will be required to offer paid vacation for any reason. Workers will accrue one hour of paid leave for every 40 hours worked, up to 40 hours total. Employers may offer more than 40 hours and employees may take time off after working for 90 days.
AIR FRESHENERS ALLOWED
Police will no longer be able to pull over a motorist solely because there is an object hanging from their rearview mirror. The law was approved after Daunte Wright was pulled over in Minnesota in 2021 for having a dangling air freshener. He was shot when the officer, reaching for her stun gun, instead grabbed her sidearm.
NO VIDEOCONFERENCING ON THE ROAD
Video meetings, streaming or accessing a social media website while driving will be prohibited. There will be an exception for video on a hands-free or voice-activated device or an application requiring the push of no more than a single button to activate or terminate it.
NO INDOOR VAPING
Vaping or smoking an electronic cigarette or cigar in a public indoor space will be prohibited. The law adds electronic smoking devices to the list of items prohibited in indoor public places under the 2008 Smoke Free Illinois Act, which banned regular tobacco products’ indoor use.
LICENSE-PLATE READER RESTRICTIONS
Interstate agreements between law enforcement agencies must specify that license-plate reader technology not be used on cars driven by women coming into Illinois to have abortions.
SURVEILLANCE DRONES
Following the Highland Park parade shooting, lawmakers approved the use of drones by law enforcement to surveil “routed” or “special events.” The drones may not be equipped with weapons or facial-recognition technology.
DEEPFAKE PORN
Victims of digital forgeries known as deepfake pornography may file civil lawsuits against anyone who shares or threatens to share an image that falsely depicts a person exposing genitalia or other private parts or engaging in a sex act. Identifying the image as materially altered is not a defense to liability.
RESTROOMS MAY BE ALL-GENDER MULTIOCCUPANCY
Businesses have the option of installing restrooms that may be used by any gender simultaneously. Current restrooms may be renovated to accommodate all genders. Urinals may not be included and stalls must have floor-to-ceiling, locking dividers.
VOTER REGISTRATION FOR TEENS
Teenagers may pre-register to vote at age 16 or 17 while obtaining a driver’s license or state identification card at a drivers’ services office run by the secretary of state. When turning 18, the legal voting age, they will already be registered to vote.

Porvoo's Uusimaa is among the papers reporting that the Finnish Meteorological Institute is forecasting accumulation of up to 10 centimetres of fresh snow in some southern parts of the country and around 3-8 centimetres in central regions.
The storm was expected to be at its height during the morning hours with bad driving conditions affecting commutes.
Iltalehti writes that road conditions on Thursday morning would likely cause grey hair for both motorists, people using public transport and pedestrians.
And that's not all. The next of the "nearly apocalyptical weather reversals" is to be a temperature rise of nearly 40 degrees Celsius in many areas.
The paper quotes Foreca meteorologist Anna Latvala as saying there will be a huge turnaround in the weather next week, especially in Northern Ostrobothnia and southern and central parts of the country.
She noted that on Tuesday the temperature at Ylivieska, in the region of Northern Ostrobothnia was -37C. By the beginning it next week, it is forecast to be well above the freezing point.
Before you drive
The farmers' and forest owners' paper Maaseudun Tulevaisuus reminds readers that safe driving will be a challenge in much of the country during the day because of blowing snow reducing visibility, and slippery road surfaces.
The paper suggests that drivers do four things before getting behind the wheel in order to improve traffic safety.
The first is to check current warnings from the Finnish Meteorological Institute's warning map.
The next is to take a look at the traffic situation report from Finntraffic.
Before setting out, you should check your vehicle's lights.
Many people rely heavily on their car's automatic light system and may therefore inadvertently drive with only their parking lights on. A good tip is to switch on the headlights regardless of the automatic mode. Visibility of the car can also be improved by turning on the rear fog lights. And taillights should also be kept clean, as they may become clogged with snow.
Finally, remember to keep an assured clear distance in traffic and avoid unnecessary tailgating. .
Experts say that the recommended safety distance when driving in urban areas is half the driving speed in metres. So, for example, at a speed of 40 km/h, the safety distance is 20 metres. On highways, the driving speed in metres becomes the recommendation, which means, for example, when driving 80 km/h you should keep a distance of at least 80 metres.
Missing migrants
Ilta-Sanomat reports that more than 160 asylum seekers have disappeared from reception centres in the country, according to Antti Lehtinen, the director of the asylum unit of the Finnish Immigration Service.
All of those now unaccounted for came to Finland over the border with Russia after the beginning of August.
Lehtinen believes that many of those who have disappeared have gone to another country to file for asylum. Sixteen have been confirmed to have done so, he told Ilta-Sanomat.
So far, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, France, Sweden, Germany and Switzerland have requested that Finland accept the return of these migrants.
Lehtinen considers it likely that, in addition to the 16 confirmed cases, several more of the 160 missing asylum seekers have moved on from Finland to another EU country and that more readmission requests will be received in coming weeks.
He also told the paper that about 50 decisions have been made on the asylum applications of people who crossed the eastern border during the autumn.
Two-thirds have been negative decisions and one-third have been terminated or withdrawn. So far, no positive decisions have been made on the asylum applications filed by migrants that came across the eastern border during the autumn.
From the beginning of August to the end of last year, a total of 1,323 people who crossed Finland's eastern border applied for asylum. So far this year, 15 people who crossed the eastern border have applied for asylum.
Summer traffic chaos?
Helsingin Uutiset looks at the potential impact of planned repairs the capital's metro system
Metro traffic through Helsinki's main railway station will probably be suspended next summer for three months due to renovation works.
Metro trains from the east will run no farther than the Helsinki University station, and from the west, the Kampi station.
The paper reports that the plan raised red flags at a city council meeting on Wednesday, with, for example, National Coalition Party councilor Otto Meri saying that the situation will lead to chaos if something is not done about it.
"The number of people traveling during rush hour is so huge that it probably cannot be handled by buses, even if they run every minute. It is of paramount importance that the break could be shortened from three months," he said.
Deputy Mayor Anni Sinnemäki (Green) indicated that downtime for this section of the Metro cannot be shortened, as plans already call for repairs to be carried out in three shifts for practically the entire scheduled three months.
Sinnemäki said that the impact of the closure will be eased by increasing tram traffic.

20 Tips for Safe Trick-or-Treating!
Halloween is supposed to be spooky, but make sure your Halloween is scary for all the right reasons. Trick-or-treating is fun, but it’s also an evening fraught with danger. Here we offer 20 tips for more fun than fright this trick-or-treat night.
Plan your route. Make sure you are familiar with the neighborhood. Use sidewalks, paths, and crosswalks. Avoid backyards, shortcuts, and alleys.
Watch the weather. A surprise thunderstorm may add to the ambience of a haunted Halloween, but it will also add slippery walkways, reduced vision for motorists, and a threat of dangerous lightning strikes.
Stay bright. Keep to well-lit areas (i.e., street lights if possible), and arm kids with glow sticks or flashlights so they can be seen by drivers. Adorn costumes and bags with reflective tape. Only visit homes that have front porch lights on.
Stay outside. Children should only accept treats on the doorstep – never inside a home.
Check your child’s treats. Remove any candy that has loose or opened wrappers (or no wrapper at all). Watch for choking hazards for young children. Discard candy that has unfamiliar brand names. Remember to check carefully for ingredients that may be allergens for your child.
Maximize visibility. For children’s costumes, opt for face paint vs. masks. Masks might obscure a child’s vision. Hats, scarves, and wigs should be tied securely so they won’t slip over children’s eyes.
Make costumes safe. Choose costumes that won’t cause falls. Shoes should be secure. Hemlines should be well above the ground. Also choose flame-resistant fabrics. Use non-toxic makeup and test ahead of time on a small patch of your child’s skin. Avoid sharp accessory objects such as pretend swords. Even plastic toys can be sharp or tripping hazards.
Accompany your kids. Adults should supervise kids under the age of 12. For kids over 12, make sure they travel in groups and establish ground rules. Know the exact route they plan to take, and turn on their phone tracking. Review with children how to call 9-1-1.
Tuck cell phones away. Cell phones are a great tool for safety, but everyone needs to have their eyes on the road. Keep ringers on, but keep phones in pockets.
Walk, don’t run. As exciting as this night is, try to keep children energy reigned in for the sake of safety.
Be mindful of health. Make sure your child has a good meal prior to parties and trick-or-treating to discourage eating candy all night long. Make sure your child knows they are not to eat anything until you have checked all the candy at home in the light. Try to ration treats over the days following Halloween. This is a great opportunity to teach your children the importance of moderation.

Lock up pets. Keep family pets away from the front door, for their safety and for the comfort of your guests. You also don’t want an open door to become an escape route for anxious animals. That could become a Halloween nightmare.
Clear a path. Make sure front walkways are unobstructed to avoid tripping hazards. Sweep wet leaves away.
Light up. Make sure porch lights are kept on. This will help little goblins see the way and let them know you’re open for business.
Fake your flames. Use battery-operated candles in jack-o-lanterns to avoid inflaming guests.
Offer non-candy options. Many parents will appreciate non-sugar alternatives such as pencils, bookmarks, stickers, glow sticks, etc.
If you are driving during Trick-or-Treat times, follow these precautions.
Turn on headlights early. Most cars have headlights that turn on automatically at dusk, but try to turn on your headlights even earlier.
Slow down. Drive very slowly and be especially alert for excited children who may dart out unexpectedly.
