Round 4 - Pyromancy (fire) 2/2

Propaganda under the cut (beware of potential spoilers!!)

Zuko:

Was a great firebender and was taught by the originals firebenders, the dragons, to not harness his anger but to harness the true source of firebending.

He shows that the source for fire isn't hate and anger, and that fire is a life force, that it can be used for more than genocide and murder. Also has the best redemption arc in fiction.

Am I the only one who genuinely loves The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl?

Like, I know a lot of people don’t think highly of the movie, and it didn’t do very well. But I genuinely enjoy this movie. I mean the movie is kinda goofy and ridiculous, but that��s kinda the point and all the over the top acting, PS2 CGI and all around cheesiness give the movie a certain charm to it, making it genuinely fun and enjoyable to watch. George Lopez as Mr. Electric and Jacob Davich as Linus are just hilarious to watch, they knew exactly what type of movie this was and didn’t hold back. I mean who could forget this masterpiece of acting.

Both lead actors Taylor Launter and Taylor Dooley (the Taylors as I’m gonna call them) also do a genuinely great job portraying the characters.

Taylor Launter (A.K.A. Jacob from Twilight) really goes ham on this film, it’s really over the top (to the point of literally chewing the scenery) but it’s a really enjoyable over the top performance, if you know what I mean and he has a good range of emotion in this, if that makes sense. Also this song will always be a banger!

Additionally Taylor Dooley’s performance is also a good one. There’s a certain wholesomeness to her.

It’s much more calm and reserved than Launter’s, but I kinda like that, it helps the two to balance each other out, and is also a neat subversion of the fire character being hot tempered and the water character being calm. I also like how her calmness contrasts with her destructive power and her arc of finding a productive use for them. It’s nothing groundbreaking or nothing, but the movie has a good amount of set ups and pay-offs.

But all in all, I think this movie works so well is because it’s literally based on the dreams that a child had. Robert Rodriguez essentially based the film on the dreams of his son Racer Max Rodriguez, and the movie genuinely feels like a dream a child would have, and I mean that in a good way. It explains why everything is so bright and over the top, why everything looks unreal and animated, even a lot of the dialogue was literally written by a child. Some might find this a bad thing, but I don’t know, I myself find this endearing, like looking into the mind of a child, it makes the movie feel like a passion project and it is.

Just check out the behind the scenes video about the making of the movie, as I said before, there’s a certain wholesomeness in the film, and that combined with how entertaining the over the top ridiculousness of everything makes this one of my favorite movies of all time.

And with that statement I’m ready to lose whatever credibility I may have, but I don’t care.

Time for more Sharkboy and Lavagirl.

I don't have a long ass synopsis of my little reboot fanfic, just that I wanted to draw them again. Decided to make slight touch-ups on their designs.

For Sharkboy, it was just to add back to shark logo back to his suit, since it's a legit part of his original costume that I think was fine. I maybe should've left it as white, but the original logo did have red in it. The battle of simplicity, I suppose.

Speaking of logos, I thought Lavagirl's bodysuit needed a slight touch up. Modified her belt some and gave her her own logo - again, in this reboot, Lavagirl isn't an amnesiac who doesn't know her own purpose, she's a runaway princess who became a superhero. And superheroes usually have logos on their chest, so I'm sure that's the logic for Lavagirl's "LG".

I like to think the scene here is a small moment after Sharkboy and Lavagirl saved someone from a monster or something. Sharkboy doesn't think it's a big deal, it's just what they do and the monsters were probably messing up the ocean somehow. Lavagirl, though, is absolutely BEAMING and is soaking up the attention. Even though she's the mature one, I like to think being recognized as a superhero just makes her pride swell, even if Sharkboy doesn't see the big deal.

Next time, I'll probably try drawing other characters. Perhaps I'll even doodle a certain supervillain....

Max’s Parents Parallels

The parallels between SB & LB with Max’s parents are amazing. Let’s start with Sharkboy first.

I’d also like to mention that both SB & LB must’ve been directly made by Max for the purpose of showing how he views his parents and coping with his own internal conflict.

Sharkboy

This character is the first introduced to us with a tragic backstory, one where a father figure is sweep away in a sudden storm. I think this highlights what Max feels towards his dad too. The fighting has driven Max away from both parents, but he seemed especially close to his dad. So Max is trying cope and understand his feelings with this backstory Sharkboy was given.

Max must feel like his dad was too suddenly taken from him, with SB’s dad being literally swept away in a freak storm.

So which parent is supposed to be represented by SB? Max’s mom of course.

Take SB’s strict nature over Max, much more like a older brother figure would. Yet also ready to fight anyone who threatens him.

Max’s mom is much more of the realist in the relationship, denouncing dreams, because she had trouble following her true dreams. Even quickly telling Max to look to a more secure path in life and not have his heads in the clouds like his dad.

She’s takes her experience as a sign and pushes that onto her husband and son to protect them. Even if they don’t see it as such.

SB takes on her quirks, liking saying that Max shouldn’t have sugar because it gives you nightmares, directly taking a line his mom said earlier in the movie. (He also has a good singing voice, which could link to Max’s mom having one?)

Besides that SB generally takes the logical/cynical part of the duo and is harder on Max.

Lavagirl

She’s the heart of the pair, clearly taking Max’s side; being patient and encouraging.

Her personality is directly connected to Max’s dad, specifically his presence before the fighting between parents. Someone who listens to Max, encourages his interests and spends quality time with him.

Her introduction itself wasn’t anything I felt meant anything, she just kinda popped into existence.

She’s also a vessel of Max’s own internal struggle of figuring out who he is. We see her voice her own uncertainty in where she came from, what she’s meant to do. (This could also refer to Max’s dads own struggles)

I feel a bit bad but Lavagirl didn’t have too much to work with. It was all internal and she wasn’t necessarily working towards figuring out who she was until the end. If I missed something please let me know. (I’d like to give her a better role in my fanfic)

EDIT!!!

I thought about it some more and both LG and SB are vessels for Max’s character growth anyways, so LG’s sorta plot line growth being vague makes a bit more sense? It’s not as well executed personally I think but it’s somewhat of an explanation on why she herself didn’t feel like she went through much reflection. These characters just merge with each other it’s hard to keep track of if everyone actually gets decent development alone. If that makes sense.

Now to my favorite part.

In the final act of the movie, Max’s parents are swept up in the freak tornado, both putting aside any feelings about their relationship to save Max.

As it’s a life or death situation they have a final conversation about their divorce. Max’s dad admitting that he never truly wanted to leave his wife. Both saying their final “I love you’s” in what they think is the end.

It’s corny as hell but who comes out of the tornado with who in the tornado? Mom paired with LB, and Dad paired with SB.

They saved each other.

That’s all I have to say for these two, I’m not sure what else I have left to analyze in this movie now that I think about it. I might do some random thoughts or moments I forgot about.
