Toys in the Catalog

I had mentioned Eddie looking at his number and being "stretched thin" so I thought I'd put together all of the catalog images and see if the numbers mean anything to me.

Starting here. Poppy looks dead eyed in this image, while the others have very happy faces. You can't say it is the toy, necessarily, since the others look happy. She seems to have a paper tail and paper feathers on her head. Her feet are super cute.

If you haven't seen one of these, this is how it works. More of a science toy than anything. This one is a bit scarier looking.

Poppy is the same price as Eddie, while the others are a bit higher. I can envision how these toys work by the design. Super cool designs.

We've looked at this a couple of times. Eddie appears to be checking out his price. Wally and Frank pillows are quite a bit more expensive than the other toys. Is this framing them as the most popular? They are more than an entire jack-in-the-box. Barnaby I have mentioned before, because it is another bisected Barn. I think we will see him in pieces before this is over.

This is framed as gifts for your home, like Wally was looking at for Home. The cuckoo clock here is home, and is featured prominently in Eddie's breakdown in Commercials. As we watch Eddie unravel, we see an above view of the clock (and I haven't found anything else in that image, not for a lack of trying) as well as a straight on view, which shows the clock moving, but not smoothly or in time. It starts and stops, pauses longer than you think it should. This says that Wally pops out instead of a cuckoo, though Poppy might have been more traditional. We don't get to see Wally come out of the clock.

The clock reads 3:30. I don't see anything that would designate day or night. This is quite a bit more than most things, because it's a complex clock.

Then we have a tea set, which seems to be the big image it is giving us about Poppy. Doilies and tea. Over and over. We will have to remember. Wally does tap his tea cup at Poppy's in a hidden video. Still trying to figure it out, but they keep showing it to us.

Finally, a tree skirt. It's expensive, but those things always are. I love the design, and all the neighbors. We see this design in a video or still somewhere else, maybe? I will keep an eye out. This features all the neighbors as gingerbread men as well as has cut outs of their symbols. I think it is odd that Home is by Eddie and not Wally, but maybe they are mixing it up.

Final page, with records. On the holiday records: one for $5.89 or all for $15.89. There are five records below on this page and it says "continued on next page," so that is not all. All of the records that we have seen so far are here. A was in the exhibit, as well as the first ad with the missing item. We saw B in the exhibit, and it was on the record player on the Merchandise page; it plays the Alice in Wonderland bit. C is Halloween, D was some of the earliest merch, and E is mentioned, but we are told that we have part of the audio, not the full record. Generally, when it says that, we shouldn't trust it. Something to consider.

Presumably, there are more records. The records are Marlo.

The price on these seem pretty standard and in line with the rest of the catalog. The single and Painting with Wally are cheaper, we assume because it is a shorter album. On the pricing generally, we are seeing a lot of ".89" but I assume this is for the same reason things are priced at the upper end, to be smaller than a dollar increase while practically being at the next dollar amount. Eddie and Poppy's toys are the only ones at $1.89. Given that they are both bullied characters, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some kind of connection there.

One thing I didn't mention, is that Marlo is listed on this page, but it isn't elsewhere. I think I mentioned during a post on "Commercials" that there is a different company for those toys. Pretty sure Marlo did these records and the phones, at least. The other company is named "The You-Won't-Believe-It Company." They did the Wally Ball And Cup. They have other items in the video, I think. I noticed and wondered if there was something going on there, because we have only seen Marlo so far.

Introducing Beatrice, Flynn, and Nelly Frankly-Dear, Frank and Eddie's kids who were dropped off by the stork one day! Descriptions under the cut-

Beatrice

The oldest of the triplets and don't you forget it!

Perky, kind-hearted, and ladylike but also bossy and quick-tempered.

Needs everything to be just so and if it isn't, she will make that your problem.

Absolutely hates getting dirty but will rush in fists first if she thinks you're a threat to her family. She's whacked Barnaby with her favorite picnic basket many a time for chasing her poppa around!

Close with both her parents but her bossy nature often gets on Frank's nerves ("Beatrice, it is not your job to tell me these things!") and Eddie doesn't appreciate her tendency to hit people who give him a hard time.

Flynn

The middle child, doesn't really mind it.

Well-meaning and earnest but forgetful and easily distracted. Needs a firm sense of structure in his daily life or else he gets anxiety.

Follows Eddie into work most days and helps out however he can, usually in the form of keeping pop company on deliveries and making arts & crafts for the post office.

Has a bad habit of wandering off where he's not supposed to, sometimes for hours at a time. His disappearances have given Frank many a scare, though he always finds his way back eventually.

Thinks the absolute world of his poppa and wants to be just like him! Gets anxious whenever Eddie's not around. He loves Frank as well but doesn't always know if his dad likes him or not.

Nelly

The baby of the bunch.

Excructiatingly shy and anxious, often needs someone else to talk for them, and tends to just go along with whatever their siblings wanna do.

Shares their dad's obsession with bugs, has a bad habit of trying to befriend them even when they're poisonous. Eddie has suffered many stings because of this.

Spends most of their time around Frank and is closer to them overall but enjoys spending time with Eddie whenever they get a chance.

Has a big crush on Howdy.

All three of them are loved dearly by their parents and enjoy a close sibling bond! Sure hope nothing bad ever happens to this family...

Julie's coping mechanism when she's scared is to cover her eyes (she's afraid of the dark), while Frank suggests to build Poppy up to the scariness of Sally's play.

That's when Barnaby drops the title of the storybook. "Brick-by-Brick."

I'm thinking of the implications of that. Because yeah, Poppy was essentially cask-of-Amontilladoed, but did Barnaby literally mean "let's brick Poppy's windows up"? That's seems like it'd be going a little too far for him. And notably, Barnaby isn't even present- or doesn't speak- when the bricking takes place. Was it Sally's idea to take his phrasing literally? Did Barnaby drop the book's title just because somebody had to be the one to do it?

A better moral to the storybook than what was given would be taking Frank's approach to fear- exposure therapy. Gradually pushing Poppy just a little out of her comfort zone by showing her different elements of the play until she was able to watch it without being afraid. Hiding away from your fears only serves to make them bigger than they really are. That's why some people find comfort in horror: they can face their fears in a contained environment and even control them to some degree.

Staying at home all the time only serves to make Poppy more paranoid of going outdoors. She's never been shown leaving her barn. After the bricking, even her barn is starting to feel unsafe.

Old friend of Wally and Poppy, he was the one who looked out for Wally at his weakest. He was a whole lot different than how he is now, a lot gentler and a lot happier.

In the present, he works under the H.A. as an experimentative soldier out on the hunt for monsters.

Eddie Dear

He's just some soldier. Nothing much known of his past. He joined H.A. for the sole purpose of filling the gaps in his memory. Outside of that, Eddie is fairly competent in what he does, which is mainly patrolling and assisting hunters.

He later on accompanies Howdy as his partner on hunts, gradually becoming the Caterpillar's friend and close companion as time goes on.

HOME ★ ???

Home is a peculiar character, once heavily involved in Wally's past. They are the founder and current head honcho of H.A. with the company's original intention being to look for Wally until it evolved into managing corrupt mythical creatures altogether.

They don't show themselves in public or to just anybody in general, rather passing on the responsibility of relaying orders via Doll.

Doll

Doll is HOME's most loyal servant, being the only who is allowed to be in their presence personally. Want to say something to HOME? Talk to Doll. HOME has an order for you? Doll is there to deliver the message. It got to the point that Doll's face and persona is quite well known in the company, just above Howdy.

She is diligent and quite serious about what she does. She is cheerful in nature but it can often come off as intimidating to others given her affiliations. She doesn't know about it though.

saw some western aus and wanted to throw my proverbial hat in the ring. well. toss it gently. place it down on the edge-

actually no fuck that, slamming down the hat i have Thoughts:

first off, if anything this au should be the silliest looney toons bullshit.

~ of all the revolvers are unloaded. so gunfights are just people saying "bang" at each other and then throwing the nearest thing at their opponent in place of a bullet

~ Wally is the town sheriff, and he's hilariously incompetent. he also has a habit of shoplifting apples from Howdy's saloon / general store fusion. his cowboy hat has a card with an apple on it tucked in the band, but he doesn't wear it, so at nearly all times one of his hands is occupied with holding the hat. also he doesn't wear his badge ever

~ Barnaby is the town deputy, and he's marginally more competent than Wally. however, he doesn't take his job seriously and is usually napping in his chair on the sheriff office porch. sometimes he wears Wally's badge along with his own for funsies

~ also when Howdy catches Wally stealing, he'll call Barnaby over. Barnaby will proceed to arrest and lock up Wally in his own jail until Barnaby feels too bad for leaving him in there and lets him out

~ there is only one horse in town, and its Eddie's so that he can do his delivery runs and get mail from the town over - he has a lil wagon too. Sally has a running gag where she tries to steal the horse, but it completely ignores her and won't budge an inch.

~ on that note, Wally has one of those stick horses. when he needs to chase someone down, he hops on it and Barnaby lifts him by the scruff and runs, gently shaking him up and down to simulate natural horse riding movements. somehow it always works. no one can escape this tactical move

~ the only role i can see for Sally is overly-theatrical outlaw, just as incompetent as Wally. she never succeeds in stealing anything but also never gets caught because, again, Wally is terrible at his job. everyone usually comes outside to watch their wacky "fights" and do nothing about it, including Barnaby. also Julie helps her sometimes

~ Julie i think would be the town banker. she's unusually strict about it and can get kind of scary about technicalities. however the town doesn't really use currency, so they have a point system that they keep careful track of. it would be stickers, but those dont exist. actually fuck that these are puppets, stickers exist and the board is like the gold stars in that one spongebob episode

~ Frank is an entomologist that decided to brave the untamed west to see what new bugs he might discover. what he discovered was dust, scorpions, and an inability to leave the town due to no monies anywhere. he finds entertainment in keeping track of the local ant colonies' wars & affairs, and also complaining at Howdy at the bar

~ everyone complains to Howdy. he has someone at his bar at any given time and he's taken to being incredibly passive aggressive about it. they still have to pay with jokes or favors or whatever they can think of that he'll accept

~ Poppy runs the hotel, where pretty much everyone lives. Julie lives there, Frank lives there, Sally lives there, Wally lives there. Barnaby prefers to sleep in the sheriffs office, as he doesn't want to make the "across the street" commute. Howdy also stays in his saloon/store, and Eddie sleeps in his post office - as canon intended.

~ Home is the mayor. don't ask me if he's a person, an object head, or just a building - i do not know. he's probably still a building. no one can understand what he says

~ oh also Frank is incredibly pressed over the fact that the town's lawfolk suck at their job. he swears he has an aneurysm every time Wally chases Sally down the street on a stick horse, or when blatant crime is happening right in front of a very asleep Barnaby. he is tempted to take over as sheriff, but alas, there are scorpions to be stung by

so becuase i like funny men... i made a character that i can ship with barnaby. not lying, odetari's song "too fast" kept replaying in my mind with this character. I unintentionally based her on blaze the cat and rouge the bat.

in welcome home, Puraline took shelter at the neighborhood, as he ran away from home. strangly though, poppy's pies would go missing. hey, a kittys got to do what a kittys got to do to survive. even thought poppy would have gladly given her a pie. she manage to get close to barnaby cuase she found his jokes funny.

in my hyperpop punk au, she has a very heavy catwomen influence. lives a bit of a double life, burgluring at night, and flauting her riches at day (while also giving money to the poor). she laughed at a dark joke barnaby made and barnaby was locked on her ever since.

in my scene au, she's a bit of a hacker. prolly hacked wally's pc then got hacked back (wally wasn't even on the computer, it was just home maining the system). so she moved in to find which computer did it. its a bit of a lone wolf, and has a bad tendency of swiping stuff. (howdy has banned her.) she was bummed, cuase she feels down with being hacked and banned. barnaby saw her and thought a joke would cheer her up. puraline proceeded to laugh her gut out.

Question for fellow Welcome Home and My Little Pony fans: What Element of Harmony do you think each neighbour would have?

We are still learning how the characters tick but so far the canidates I'm most certain about are:

Wally as the Element of Magic, since he's "the Heart" of the neighbourhood, he is everyone's friend, the protagonist of the show and his role seems to be learning lessons (like Twilight Sparkle!)

Frank as the Element of Honesty, as his schtick is literally that he's "frank!"

Eddie as the Element of Generosity, the poor guy is always selflessly giving his time and energy to everyone without asking for anything in return.

Less certain, but more interesting to discuss, are:

Barnaby as the Element of Loyalty, despite being a jokester whose purpose is to make people laugh, what really stands out to me about Barnaby is his devotion to Wally. Barnaby is given quite a bit of flack for his somewhat callous moments with the other neighbours, but this is contrasted with his behaviour with "his little Apple." He has been shown to be patient with Wally's various quirks, sticking up for him against (percieved) slights, noticing "off" behaviour when no one else did, and Clown's confirmation that "no matter the universe they are always best friends." Plus, dogs are well known for their loyalty :-P

Julie as the Element of Laughter! HA! See, Barnaby, I told you I was funny! I would be very disappointed if the character with JOY in her name was any other Element!

ʚ — The evening went by quick, having played board games with them, acting out a random script Sally came up with, painting with Wally (thats if you know how to paint!), cracking silly jokes with none other than Barnaby and even baking something sweet and delicious with Poppy!

ʚ — Now that it was finally time to get some sweet sleep with your neighbors (which, ended up being silly stories told instead of actually getting rest), it didn't really got noticed by you, or anybody, that the weather was getting rather worse each hour.

ʚ — What started with light slowly turned into heavy rain, thunder emerging from the dark clouds that coverved the dark blue sky, it made you feel more anxious and uneasy rather than comforted by the weather.

ʚ — That, of course, didn't go unnoticed from your fellow neighbors, hearing it right outside in the comforts of your house.

ʚ — Poppy Partridge was the first person to ask if you're alright and commenting something about the bad weather, putting her wing gently on your shoulder with a face of care. Of course, even she was being a bit jumpy herself, but you were the first priority to see if you're doing fine.

ʚ — Julie Joyful joined in next, sitting next to you while seeming concerned for you, too. Soon enough, the other neighbors were coming over to help you out with the awful feeling of fear the weather has given you.

ʚ — Barnaby was making silly jokes, making sure it made you feel better rather than worse (even Howdy who remembered a few jokes), Poppy tried to ease you with simple words of comfort, Eddie...he did forget at first that you had a fear of thunderstorms, who also was trying to comfort you in the same way Poppy has.

ʚ — Frank might not have been the best in comforting people, only telling you that "the weather will soon go away", or "that it'll calm down in a few hours or so". Sally tried, she really did! But not being entirely sure on how to handle the situation was making it rather hard than simple.

ʚ — Julie on the other hand was telling you stories to keep your mind away from the thunder, having a lot of them in store! Even if it happened days ago, or even months!

ʚ — Wally was taking it on a more calmer approach, listening to his neighbors trying their best to comfort you while staring at you. He would try to say something to ease you, comforting you in the best way he could and even hearing you out if you had something to say.

ʚ — Eventually, you all had to go to sleep, nobody wants to walk around feeling cranky all day with the lack of sleep! But, also seeing that the weather wasn't going to get better any time soon, Julie decided it was the best to sleep close to each other! Just in case the weather (somehow) gets worse and with you getting more uneasy.

ʚ — Now with your neighbors sleeping close to you (and Wally's repetitive of "I'm sleeping, I'm sleeping"), you felt better! They tried their best, which was enough for you. Somehow (managing) to ignore the thunderstorm outside, you went to sleep, enjoying the peace and not so quiet sleepover with your neighbors.

ʚ — The day didn't go upside down, even with the horrendous weather that happened. The sleepover was truly the cherry on top!

Missing

There are people missing throughout the story of Welcome Home.  While these instances are mostly brushed off (what are missing people to an incomplete story?), it is a bit suspect that there are this many instances of mention of people we have no real information about.  So, we have about 3 categories:  missing we might still see, missing then found, and missing concept and context.  As with most things, this is complicated by the story still unfolding in front of us, so we might be able to change these around later.  Also, we aren’t sure where each event is happening in the timeline.

Missing we might still see: 

Julie--We have art of Julie’s siblings, but no siblings.  Her story also tells us that they all lived together in a cave in the woods, until Julie moved to the city.  Indications are that we will be seeing the siblings in the next update.  I believe it is possible that the sibs lived in Home at one point and are now missing.  There are no indications of parents or other extended family.

Eddie—there is a discrepancy here, Eddie is known to have a mother who is also a mail carrier, based on information in illustrated pages, and then it moves right on to say she wasn’t given a name and was only mentioned vaguely through the phone.  I assume Eddie calls her “Mama” like any good southern boy.  We have no idea where she might be, or if he has any other people.  Based on muppet behavior, I don’t think they could have missed out on having his mom come by to talk mail or crafts with him, because I feel like they love a parent/child shared experience.  I think he’s humanoid, but I didn’t see that here (and maybe it’s just mostly because of the style of his nose—see Guy Smiley or The Newsman (shocked to learn he doesn’t have a name))

Pro-tip:  When googling “human muppet” be advised that on r/Midjourney, Famous People if They Were Muppets, nightmare fuel abounds.  I love muppets and I might not sleep tonight.  Also, muppets with human eyes.  No.

I tend to assume that muppets with triangle noses are human and rounded noses are monster, but I don’t think that is a rule by any means. 

However, drawing muppets as human is incredibly endearing. 

Missing then found:

Maybe Howdy—We knew that Howdy had a ton of relatives from previous stories he has told, but we did not hear anything about the people who actually showed up.  I am assuming this would be a gag, random new family members showing up, though I wouldn’t be surprised to see the return of Howdo, Youdo, and his beatnik brother. 

Mama Beagle—She is found during Homewarming, but not sure where this commercial falls in the timeline.  She was definitely a big enough role to warrant her own product.  She lives on a farm, which is where Barnaby grew up.  AKA “The Chicken that Crossed the Road”

People we didn’t/don’t know were/are missing:

Frank’s people:  If Frank has any people, we don’t know about it.  His origins were a mystery. 

Sally’s people:  Anyone associated with Sally.  Given that she is a star, who knows if she has “people.”

Poppy’s people:  Poppy:  Comes from a nest of poppies in a hollow tree in the forest.  We don’t know that she has people definitely, but she has described her parents as a “flamingo on her father’s side and a bit of a hen on her mother’s side.”  Secret half-sibling to Barnaby?  It might warrant the size of the two being similar.  I think she is kind of a cross between Big Bird and Clifford the Big Red Dog.  (I looked at those two, and Big Bird isn’t explained and neither is Clifford, beyond that the author thought it would be fun.  I reject “love” being the answer because it was from the later movie.)  We could see people related to her, but I would imagine they will be normal bird size (which is really relative, considering Mama Beagle’s size.)

D—In the ad from the first iteration of the website, D is missing, and I believe it is a character.  I think it is Sunny, but I know it is not canon and Clown said.  I still think it.

I will feel bad about it, if that is the case, because I keep saying it.

Aside from the above, other art that gives this idea:

Theories exist that this image shows Barnaby’s fur as a patch, blood on Wally’s fingers, and his fingers covering a picture of Barnaby on the cover, which is considered to possibly be a missing persons/murder story.  All kinds of things could land you in the paper, though, and the whole image has red shading.

I'm kinda new, so I'm just trying to find out what I can to catch up to everyone else who has been here. Aiden is the son of a chief/king? He wants to grow up and be as revered as his father. His friend of childhood is from a rival place and his name is Dante.

Aiden is trans and his dad doesnt really have faith but thanks to his mom and Frank (who he meets as a kid) he gets trained up and finally accepted in to the army.

Aiden and Dante find out their homes are at war and are like “nooo dont fight haha” and their parents are like “yea? Political marriage” and theyre like “shit”

So they become engaged, Dante has a small crush on Aiden so hes not that mad, Aiden doesnt want it. Their parents still plan to fight but in a backstab way.

Dad needs a right hand man, doesnt choose Aiden, chooses his rival but soon to be best friend (I dont have a name yet for them).

They go to war, Aidens dad tells him “lol go kill Dante while I kill the dad” Aiden gets told by deity same thing. To kill Dante or blood will be shed from his home. Aiden is about to, cant go through with it. Dante doesnt know.

They still win the battle, marriage is obviously called off. Aidens dad gets help from a witch to head home while Aiden meets Barnaby and gets help handling the witch (her name is Willow).

Dad and Frank get into an argument lmao. Frank is like “I pseudo raised your kid” and dad is like “nuh uh” dad does NOT know hes arguing with a deity. Aiden adult at this point.

Aiden meets Wally. Wally meets his parents and they bond a bit before he leaves after I think a week? Month? Dont remember. Aiden is big sad, bro misses him even tho he almost killed him.

Mom proud of the warrior Aiden became.

Another battle at war. Aiden is finally given the chance to lead a team. Blinds Dantes brother who is a tyrant. Frank and Aiden argue about leaving the guy alive.

Aiden meets Cloud god (lmao)

Dantes dad kills Aidens dad. Best friend saves the remaining crew by getting them tf out of there. They also found out Dantes brother was also killed but Aiden doesnt know if that was his fault.

Aiden meets Mathew after going through Eddies sacred lands or spirits and memory. Finds out mom died too. Aiden says fuck it Im going to be brutal with everyone.

Kills Dantes dad.

Taking care of Camila , his lil sis, and meets Wally again. Lovey lovey again.

Frank is like “bro nah thats a god youre a mortal” Aiden is like “you right” and tries to break up with Wally but Wally is like “Wait no, fuck the rules” and Aiden is like “…touché”

Aiden proposes, they marry

Maybe a kid? Debating.

Dante has a kid.

Dante sends assassins, Aiden kills them. Brutal with his opponents. Sacrifices his men. Goes through mutiny. Howdy like “lol death to your crew”. Best friend dies but also finds out that friend is who killed Dantes blinded brother which led to Aidens dads death.

Aiden tries to break off with Wally again because of everything hes been through he doesnt want that for Wally. Wally is like “Calm down—“

Lovey lovey

Dante has a dream of killing Aiden. Gets his crew for a strike.

Kills Aiden. Aiden says goodbye to his sister as shes taken away to safety as his home burns.

Wally grieving when he finds out

Kills Dante

Camila (adult now) comes back and calms Wally down. Befriends him.

Camila dies of old age.

Wally is learning to deal with grief.

Meets Aiden again as reincarnation.

Continues to love him through reincarnation and reincarnation.

Eventually gives up his divinity to live as mortal with Aiden.

Julie Joyful

Deity of the moon and oceans. Do not be fooled by her elegant and beautiful appearance, for she's an energic goddess that will bend bodies of water to her emotional will.

The moon is often associated to calmness, feminity, such things, but I decided to go with an other approach. The moon is small and fast. She turns around the earth every day of the year, and is responsible for the tides. The closer she is, the bigger the tide ! That doesn't sound that much calm to me. In this AU Julie appears calm only because Sally insist that she has to dress "regal" for their very important deity jobs. Isn't that silly ?

Julie will have alternate outfits depending on the activity she wants to do at any given moment, switching from pants to dress !

Sally Starlet

Deity of the Sun, stars and fire, she is the calm one, most of the time. Warm, but also a little stuck up sometimes, Sally likes when things are in order and go her way. She sees their deity roles as important ! The fiery goddess also gives her blessings in the arts, especially theater art which she favors

The sun doesn't move as much as the moon, but it is big and powerful and at the center of our solar system. I like the idea of reversing roles a little, having the sun being the calm one for once

Home

The deity of death is a kind and compassionate fellow. He doesn't talk much, but listens very well, and will help souls pass to their afterlife with all the compassion in the world. He is also the patron of living spaces, as he wants to make sure beings live well, safe, sound and happy, before he comes to take them away.

I like it when death deities aren't cruel but instead very kind and comforting. Home will have a lot of little helpers ! Although, note that Home is the deity of death as in he's the reaper. There is other deities ruling over the concept of death ! Home is more of a psychopomp in this AU ( psychopomps are the "reaper" deities. It includes Valkyries, Ankous, Shinigamis, Grim Reaper, etc)

Wally Darling

The deity of life ! He creates and gives in abondance, whenever he can. He may not be particularly smart, or doesn't pay that much attention to his creations past their conception and first breath, but he means well and is still learning. He's a fairly new deity, replacing the previous one. Home is there to kindly help guide him to his new duties, along with Barnaby.

He's just a silly trying his best with great powers. Life is pretty mysterious, and not easy. The path is long and full of hardships, after all... but I don't think what gives the first breath of life is cruel for it. Life is still beautiful and should be cherished

📺 Wally would be super excited, asking about absolutely everything. It would be especially exciting for him to learn about how phone's have changed. They are now tiny slabs that you carry everywhere with you! He's probably going to end up sitting on your couch, playing art games on your phone.

📺 Poppy would be both enthusiastic and weary of checking out the kitchen of your home. She was already a little anxious about getting injured in her own kitchen, so now she is extra anxious, due to all of this new technology. Once you teach her what everything does, however, she is happy to get back to baking and to try out all of these new gadgets.

📺 Eddie would be interested in learning how the new mail system works. That, and learning about electric cars. He's always had a passing interest in transportation, mostly due to him transporting mail, so learning about how cars have changed is very interesting! Same with trains, too!

📺 Frank would have an interest in everything, much like Wally, but he has a particular interest in e-books. People can now keep books on their phones? He believes it doesn't hold a candle to physically owning the book, but does seem how useful it could be if you cannot get your hands on it.

📺 Sally is astonished by the television. It is so flat, like paper! It also has a better quality image on the screen? How can it do that when it is so flat? You could watch so many shows, too! What is a "streaming service"?

📺 Julie really likes the internet. You can talk to so many people in so many ways! There are these games, too, that you call "MMOs". So many people in one place! Then there is this "YouTube" that you can watch videos on, made by people. She especially loves the makeup videos, finding it satisfying to watch others put it on and see how their faces change.

📺 Howdy is a bit conflicted. He liked things the way they were before, however, change doesn't necessarily mean bad. He'll try out the new gadgets and technology. Online shopping is where he gets especially spooked, though. He can't really understand why someone would want to buy things without physically holding them, first! He... he CAN understand shopping online for things that are not available in your area or country... but didn't you say that there was that Wal-Mart down the street? Why would you buy things from an online Wal-Mart when you can just go to the physical one?

📺 Barnaby is mostly interested in using this new technology for his jokes. If you have any sort of soundboard, be it a physical one or on your phone, he will love it. If you teach him about memes, he will practically fall in love with them. Put a few sounds associated with memes on a soundboard, leave him be, then he will be entertained for about three hours as he makes jokes. Just be warned that he will want all of you to listen to every single one. He's proud of his work.

📺 If you somehow have Home in your... well... home, then it's probably a miniature version of Home. So, if you have Home, and are able to show it all the new gadgets you have in your time period, it will be most interested in Alexa. She can turn your lights on and off with just a small command! It can play music, look up stuff, basically anything! Is it especially interested in the ways Alexa can do things around the home.

Walter: This baby's delicate! I can't actually afford to put any weight on her organs. Luckily, your boy's a genius.

As he says this, he undoes the leg harness suspending him from the ceiling, pausing for a moment to grab onto the dangling cords. He then throws himself backwards off of them, presumably intending to land on his feet but missing and crashing out of frame.

Bella: Hah, yeah. Real brainiac here.

As he sits up and takes her offering of water, Wally can be seen looking at him in disgusted confusion. Then, Walter notices him looking.

Walter: What the fuck?! Why is there another me?!? And why's he so short too?

Jax (offscreen): Walter! Dude!

Wally: I don't know, why do you look like you've been run over by a car?

Poppy (also offscreen): Wally!

Walter: Haha, I have actually! Several times in fact. Comes with the job I guess. (to the other neighbors) but anyway, who are all of you?

Wally rolls his eyes, before suddenly looking around him in shock.

Finally, after far too long waiting, he is here! Page 9, and the official introduction of Walter! He's quite the character, and different from the OG in a lot of ways. For one, his favorite fruits are pears not apples, and also he isn't actually a demon! He's something else entirely ;)

On a different note, turns out I had a spare pen in my desk drawer, plus I've ordered a 4th along with a fresh bag of backup nibs, so hopefully we won't be having any more issues! I would've mentioned it earlier, but given the absolute rollercoaster we've been on the past several weeks I was scared I might jinx it if I spoke too soon. Luckily though, we've made it through this page unscathed, and more are underway! Stay tuned!

ON THE TOPIC OF BARNABY. as well as his relationship with Wally.

So. To kick this off - Riv (@funonion) and I were Speculating, and they introduced me to the johari window:

They put Barnaby in the “facade” section, and I entirely agree. To quote them;

“So he’s Wally’s guide, right? He’s the “knowledgeable” one of the two and is always the one teaching him new things. And you know, it’s one thing if you’re just teaching him how to laugh or how to tell a joke. But.

Clown has given us two doors. One says that Barnaby understands Wally in a way the rest of the neighborhood doesn’t, and is willing to do his dirty work so to speak. The other says that their friendship was not a natural occurring thing and had to be enforced repeatedly within the show. HOW THAT’S BEING ENFORCED IS ANOTHER THING ENTIRELY but it is worth it to note.

What is Barnaby willing to keep? What is he willing to bury for his little buddy? I can’t say anything definitively yet, but the fact that I even have to ask is telling. The class clown archetype is usually used as a way to cover up for something else a character might be experiencing”

And my response, (I won’t directly quote because I have little things in the phrasing & elaboration to add / tweak );

Barnaby being a Comic Relief Character immediately raised so many alarms in my head. I love comic relief characters. They’re always so fucked up in one way or another, and Barnaby is almost certainly SO inauthentic. He’s wearing a comedy mask just as opaque as Wally’s own mask. In everything we’ve seen about him so far he’s either Teaching Wally, wisecracking/joking, or… pretty much nothing else. We got that moment of concern in audio 14-14, but that doesn’t reveal anything beyond genuine care for Wally.

Comedic characters have the best disguises. Their poker faces & ability to deflect is always top tier [and practiced], and just look at comedy-focused actors and entertainers - so many of them have severe issues, either with their mental health or life. From what i’ve observed both in that aspect & with fictional characters, they play it off & work hard to entertain/deflect [one in the same] right up until the end. Sometimes it’s a coping mechanism. Usually it’s both. If they laugh loud enough and make people think they’re lighthearted fools w/ nothing underneath, no one will look any deeper and thus they’re “safe”. 

& I’m a little suspicious that Barnaby’s red/orange/yellow spots aren’t naturally those colors. While yes, he could be (in-universe) designed that way to echo Ms. Beagle, there’s a strong possibility that that’s not it. What if he paints them to feel a connection to her, or it’s a physical manifestation of Barnaby covering up his insecurities/issues - what if it’s part of him striving to convince the world that he is what he paints himself as. 

The laidback funnyguy with a loving mom and not a problem in the world. 

And I mean, Barnaby claims to be a natural blue and I believe him! But the other colors? I’m doubtful

(I was going to include the Cast As Lil Kids Designs in this since Barnaby has all blue spots, but given how early in 2021 it was posted and how there seem to be little discrepancies from the ~official~ designs, I don’t want to provide it as evidence.)

& on the topic of Wally and Barnaby’s relationship being both real and not - disclaimer, this conversation happened before my Updated Thoughts On Them post, so there may be some minor rephrasing here from what I originally said - I’m sure that the relationship started out as inauthentic. Wally was assigned Barnaby as a best friend and technically vice versa, but I don’t doubt for a second that it became real to some extent. Clown wouldn’t treat their relationship outside of “canon” WH stuff the way that he does if they weren’t actually friends. They’ve said that Wally & Barnaby would be friends in every universe (which melts my heart <3 platonic soulmates my beloved <3), so then I have to agree with Riv. what WILL Barnaby do for Wally? I touched on this in the Milk Theory, but especially if Barnaby prides himself on “knowing Wally better than anything else”, what would Barn do to preserve that?

This relates to another conversation we had - Barnaby possibly having abandonment issues. It’s such a choice to have him of all characters be explicitly stated as an orphan. That and while every other Neighbor with a mentioned family have a somewhat large one (Howdy and his gajillion relatives, Julie and her three siblings, Poppy and her crowded tree [note: Eddie has a mentioned mother, but that info is tenuous and who knows if there are other Dears]), Barnaby has also explicitly stated that Ms. Beagle is his only family. That’s it. And farm life can’t be a sociable way to grow up, not with all the chores he must have had and how rural he might have grown up. Barnaby jokes that Home is the “Big Apple”, which could just be a joke - but jokes often come from a place of truth, and Home might be the most populated area Barnaby has lived in. Who’s to say!

Either way, Barnaby was orphaned one way or another, and I don’t doubt that it weighs on him. Especially if  his birth parents really did abandon him. That added to a possible life of loneliness… I wonder if he’s latched onto Wally emotionally, which would hit all the painful places if it turns out that my “Barnaby is more attached to Wally than Wally is to Barnaby” theory has merit. Abandonment issues could also strongly back the apparent walls he’s plastered over with circus tent fabric

Back to Barnaby & Wally: the fact that, at present, Barnaby and Wally seem to have the best disguises / strongest masks. That. looking at 14-14, i suspect that Barnaby is excellent at keeping his up, but as soon as Wally’s mask cracks, so does Barnaby’s. 

And then there’s the side of their dynamic that we could look at - it seems to be a very multifaceted relationship. The way that Barnaby genuinely cares yet in the 00 Halloween audio Wally was left off to the side and Barnaby was just “checking on him” while socializing (then again, this could be part of Barnaby understanding Wally & respecting his space / Wally wanting a break from that socialization). Barnaby is patient with Wally and yet he seems to sometimes treat Wally as his sidekick / let him fade into the background and yet Barnaby kept checking in on Wally during the 14 bug audios (this last one I could tie into the abandonment issues theory). 

Then there’s how Barnaby calls Wally kid & can tend to treat him like one despite both of them being in the same age group. The way that all of this could, in a way, relate to the infantilization of autistic people (no matter how well-meaning or unintentional) & internalized ableism. 

Note: Riv pointed out that Barnaby does seem to be doing the best with what he has, and that this can connect to the Johari Window’s blind spot / unknown. 

I do agree with this wholeheartedly! And I have to mention that - and making a Very educated guess here - the interactions we’ve seen take place in the very late 60s / very early 70s, so Barnaby’s behavior towards Wally is actually pretty fucking stellar given the time period. We can’t expect him to be perfect or do everything / say everything right. That would be boring I think! And one thing I deeply appreciate about the Neighbors & their dynamics is that they feel like real layered people, not cardboard cutouts being perfect caricatures of what people are “supposed” to be like.

Riv also presented this:

We likely are going to reach a point where Wally asks Barnaby something that he can’t / doesn’t want to / won’t answer. And like.. Ok. This is a slight tangent but I swear it’s related! When I first discovered WH and learned the Wally basics, I wondered two things.

Are we going to watch Wally “discover” new emotions? Because he certainly has them. Clown has said that Wally only ever feels happy, and a lot of people took that to mean that Wally can’t feel anything else. I don’t think we should take that answer at face value, because. I mean. Look at the project & creator we’re talking about. Layers, guys. Indirect direct answers. I think that Clown meant that Wally only ever feels happy in the Neighborhood because he has no reason to feel any negative emotion. Everything is as it should be. Until it isn’t - and I think that’s where he’s going to have to struggle with new emotions as he encounters them through new situations/events unfolding as the “story” starts to deteriorate. We’ve actually seen this a little bit - in Wally’s record audios (i believe the chronological second to last?), the way he says “Let Me In” so insistently. That’s definitely not a positive emotion being expressed. 

How will the topic of death be handled - because it will be handled, it’s stated in the project warnings. I was wondering this even before I read the list, because I was presented with a blank slate puppet character and so went “oh fuck, this dude doesn’t know about death, does he?” Obviously I wanted to know how that would go. I want to know how it Will go! 

How would Barnaby explain emotions that Wally doesn’t know how to convey? How would Barnaby explain death in a way that Wally would understand - given that Barnaby (& all the Neighbors sans Wally) knows what death is  - and would Barnaby be willing to explain such a thing? I have a feeling we may find out.

And in a way, I suspect that if none of them know, Wally will find out himself and have to process it without help. But then again, how can something die if it was never really alive in the first place? Unless the death warning relates to human characters… I’m currently assuming it relates to both humans and puppets. 

In conclusion: Barnaby has a carefully fabricated facade, he's doing the best with what he has but it likely won't be enough, and uh. shits fucked!
