Many fans are disheartened by the news that Mindy Kaling’s “Velma” series which will premiere on HBO Max will be lacking the core character of the entire Scooby-Doo franchise: Scooby himself.
“Velma” plans to reimagine the character as being from east-Asian descent (which is not the first time the franchise as done this). The show has been promoted as having a more adult-oriented presentation of the characters, including exploration of sexual identity and a potential murder plot.
The spin-off will be one of few examples in the cartoon’s 50+ year run to exclude Scooby as a main character, and will be the only one to include all the other characters of Mystery Inc besides him.
What are your thoughts on this development for the “Velma” spin-off series? Are you still going to give it a chance or is Scooby’s exclusion from the show a dealbreaker?

Scooby-Doo fans are all excited about an interview “SCOOB!” director Tony Cervone did with Comic Book Movie (CBM). In this interview, he hinted at the early development/talks of a follow-up to the “SCOOB!” movie!
What this follow-up would take the form of (a direct sequel, series, etc) is still unclear as this is information that hasn’t been officially announced from Warner Bros. But it’s still fun to speculate about after the 2020 animated film that was released on various streaming platforms due to the pandemic. This project would probably continue to develop the Hanna-Barbera Cinematic Universe that was hinted at throughout the first film.
What are your thoughts on this news? Check out the article above from Screen Rant or read the original interview at CBM here.

DAPHNE AND VELMA: BURIED SECRETS
Tumblr media
“Daphne and Velma: Buried Secrets” is the title of the third entry to the YA series! Written by Morgan Baden, this book is slated for a June 2021 release. Check out the summary for the book below from Google Books: “There's big news in the town of Crystal Cove: A TV show based on the town's mysterious past is filming in the Haunted Village. Many of the hottest teen TV stars are on set. Daphne is excited; she's been hired as a writer's assistant on the show. Meanwhile, Velma is less than thrilled about all the Hollywood types milling around her parents' property. But before the shoot begins, Daphne's mom-a producer on the show-starts receiving threatening letters. Next, the sabotage begins. And then, when the showrunner reveals that he's discovered a long-buried secret about the town's past, sabotage turns to theft, then to arson, and eventually to murder. Daphne and Velma know that digging up the past can be dangerous . . . especially when some families in town have profited from the past for so long. Can they uncover who's behind all this murder and mayhem . . . and discover what secret from the past they're protecting?” We can’t wait for the day we get to review these books on the podcast. Are you a fan of this book series/spin on the Scooby formula?

This Geeks Worldwide article has some interesting information about the upcoming “Velma” series on HBO Max. Their sources have character descriptions which sound like casting calls, indicating that the production is working on finding voice actors. This also explains why the author was unable to find descriptions about Velma herself since it’s public knowledge Mindy Kaling is voicing her.
What do you think about the character descriptions? Do they make you more excited for the series?

The official trailer for the new “Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?” series is now available to watch! For those who aren’t aware, this show will take on a similar format to the 1970′s “The New Scooby-Doo Movies” series where the gang teams up with celebrity guest stars and popular fictional characters to solve mysteries. This show will premier on the Boomerang streaming app on June 27th and will release new episodes weekly up until the season finale in September!
Who else is excited about this series? Do you like the look/style/premise of it? Or no? I’d love to hear what you have to say.
(And yes, this series will be added on to That Groovy Scoobcast’s roster of episode reviews)
