this past week my qpp of almost two years broke up with me. and i know for you, you said you wouldn't necessarily feel heartbroken if your qpr came to an end, but for me, it felt more heartbreaking than some of my past romantic breakups. this whole thing made me wonder if maybe im not queerplatonic or aro enough to be in a qpr, or if id ever want to be in a qpr again. but seeing you post about your qpr gives me hope that queerplatonic love is something that i can experience fully. so thank you for always sharing your story, because that's what's helping me heal right now <3

Aah, to be perfectly honest, as much as I sorta "downplay" it compared to what it must feel for people who experience romantic attraction... I've had a time where I almost felt like I couldn't go on with my QPP as well and the sheer thought of it was really hard to bear too, so my words here aren't necessarily being very fair to the reality of things.

It was during the travel ban of March 2020 to November 2021 where citizens of my country and others weren't allowed to enter the US unless we spent 15 days in a country that wasn't banned. It made it much harder than usual to visit my partner and as it was nearing 2 years with nobody aware it was going on anymore and US people more concerned about whether they'd be able to have turkey for Thanksgiving, my hope was running really thin. So for a few days in mid-October, as I was at rock bottom, I was starting to write in passing to my partner about how maybe going on wasn't worth it because the separation was too hard on us, it wasn't showing signs of stopping, and the whole thing maybe wasn't worth the pain if they could live their life happily and not have to worry about me who couldn't visit.

And then we videocalled at some point, and when they tearfully told me that even if it did end then and there, they wanted me to keep the promise ring they'd recently given me, I suddenly felt a quiet rage in me going like "No. Fuck this. Look at them. I love them. And I love this too much to allow some cruel governmental decision to end it. If it ever ends, it'll be because WE want it to end. Not because of shit like this."

...I'm making it sound super dramatic but yeah long story short this is also a big reason why we're planning to get married. So that when the US government decides to put a ban on countries including mine again, they can't stop us from vibing together this time.

I guess... I still don't wanna 100% assume we'll be together forever because I don't wanna trap them in a situation they may no longer feel happy in. We're doing great now, but I still have it in the back of my mind that maybe someday they'll get sick of me (they say they never will and that'd be dope if they never did, but never say never and all), or we'll both just want other things, and if it ends like that, then... Yeah, that'd be alright. Much more alright than the way it almost ended.

(...Oh, and for the record, if a friendship of mine ended abruptly, or if my brothers stopped being on good terms with me, I'm pretty sure I'd be just as heartbroken, to be fair. And it'd feel like my reality was collapsing a little. I guess anything ending, any human connection ending, has that effect to a degree, if it's important enough, after all.)

Though describing things like that does make it a bit harder to define what makes it "queerplatonic" as opposed to "romantic", I still... Just have that feeling in my gut that it isn't romance, y'know? It's kinda... A mix between being close friends and being an old married couple without ever having gone through the grandiose passion-honeymoon phase. Maybe that phase IS what defines romance per se. I don't know. Maybe someday I'll find more answers, but it's kinda hard to find answers when you have no idea how romance works to begin with I guess 🙈

In any case... Sorry if I caused any confusion or if I made you question your validity. The thing is pretty simple to be honest: if you feel you're aro, you're veeeeeery likely to BE aro. Because nobody can make that call but you and nobody can name the relationships you have but you. And if amongst everything you even FOUND the words "aro" or "queerplatonic" in a world where those identities and types of relationships are so aggressively hidden or erased, then it's gotta stand for something.

...I guess at the very least THIS I can be certain of TwT Sorry I'm a bit messy about all of this myself, I'm still also going on about it trying to figure it out day by day, but I owed it to you and everyone to be honest. These things are hard to define and I hope to keep finding better and better words to do so someday. TwT

How did you get where you are now? Job wise I mean? Were you a college student before doing this or did you go looking for jobs in the art industry straight away?

Oh, well it's been quite a journey for me in terms of how I got to where I am right now but here's the full timeline (?):

August 1996 - BIRTH

April 2007 - I watch Brave Story at Tribeca Film Festival, life is changed and I decide to purse animation

June 2014 - Graduate high school and accepted into Montserrat College of Art for Animation & Interactive Media

Summer of 2016 - Studied abroad in Japan attending Niigata School of Art & Design

Summer of 2017 - First animation job as an animation intern for Sesame Street (yes that Sesame Street)

December 2017 - Graduated from college (yes I graduated early due to having college credits in high school), did not have a job lined up

2018 to 2019 - Living back in NY with my parents, working on indie animation productions, creating emotes and animated intros for content creators, applying and getting rejected from many job listings, received and fail multiple storyboard tests, developing my own projects and story ideas after years of not being able to for school work

July 2019 - Fly to California for the first time, made the decision to move in order to further pursue a career in animation, at this time the Nickelodeon Artist Program were accepting submissions so I busted out boards for a personal project in 3 days and submitted it (please do not be like me, take your time haha)

September 2019 - I receive a call from Nickelodeon and I go through a series of interviews for 2 months straight

Thanksgiving 2019 - I receive news I was selected as a trainee for the Nickelodeon Artist Program

January 2020 - Move to California and begin work as a trainee at Nickelodeon (specifically for Rugrats reboot)

January 2022 - Launch as board artist for Spiderman at Marvel Studios, still been developing my own personal projects at this point

February 2022 - Studio Shaft offers layout and genga work for Madoka Magia Record after seeing animation work of my personal projects, I accept

April 2022 - My episode of Madoka Magia Record airs, Studio Pierrot sends offer for work on Boruto

May 2022 - After my first episode on Boruto I am offered to work on Bleach Thousand Year Blood War, I accept and continue to on Bleach as of this post (3 seasons in total), Studio Mir offers me animation work for XMen 97 (I accept but only work on the first episode)

Summer of 2022 - Working on Spiderman, animating on animes, I think at some point this is when I was offered to do animation work for Castlevania Nocturne

November 2022 - Complete season 1 of Spiderman, Marvel/Disney lays me off for *reasons*, I receive an email about potential work on an unannounced show at Nickelodeon, I'm unemployed at this point

January 2023 - Collecting unemployment, freelancing on animes, trying to survive in general, also approached by Colosso to create my own course

February 2023 - Land a short gig on Big City Greens movie over at Disney TVA, Studio Mir once again offer me work but this time for second animated Witcher film

March 2023 - Land an interview as a character designer for that unannounced Nick show, didn't get the job

May 2023 - Wrap up on Big City Greens and Witcher, fly to Japan to relax (I failed)

July 2023 - Land a layout artist position at A24 (no it's not for Hazbin Hotel), Studio Mappa offer me work on Jujutsu Kaisen Shibuya Arc

September 2023 - Land another interview with Nickelodeon (this time for storyboard artist), freelancing on layouts and animation for Castlevania Nocturne S2, A24 job is stressing me out way too much so I decide to leave, MAWS hits me up for retakes on season 2

October 2023 - Wrap up at A24, I land the board artist job at Nick, I am also drowning in Jujutsu Kaisen production meltdown, complete my online course for Colosso, wrap up on MAWS S2

November 2023 - I start at Nick as a board artist, Colosso course release, I am still dying by the hands of Studio Mappa

January 2024 till now - Still boarding over at Nick and still animating on animes (I am VERY selective now about it though after JJK), I am also in therapy now Yeah so that's like, a real rough timeline over everything from school till now (and even then I am missing a lot of work details like video games and development projects due to NDAs). But pretty much what carried me was putting myself and my art out there on social media along with building relationships with people in the studios (outside of just my production) and that's how I've been able to maintain a steady work flow even when I was unemployed. Also not being afraid to develop my own ideas and share them since most of the times that gives the leadership a pretty good idea what sensibilities I have (and they just happen to match). I hope that answered your question!

In my last post, I mentioned a series called "Spark in the Dark" by paganpunk2 on FanFiction.net. The first fic in the series is a retelling of Dick Grayson's Robin origin story, and the first installment has 300k words and a hundred chapters. A Haunting in Central City - Robin and Kid Flash go trick or treating an encounter their first haunted house

Sick Day - Dick comes home from school sick, and Bruce spoils him

Hope - Clark Kent spends the new years with Bruce and Dick, written from Clark's perspective as if it were a journal entry

Instant Gratification - Bruce has Dick complete an exam every two weeks to enrich his education and help him as Robin. Dick becomes inpatient when Bruce is grading his exam.

Phenom - A group of aerialists come to Gotham and Dick watches the show with his best friend Wally West, also known as Kid Flash. Watching aerialists perform makes Dick sad about his past and his old family.

The Boy in the Box - Clark Kent gave Bruce a flash drive containing what he called "Dick's childhood," which was performances of The Flying Graysons

The Ache of Cowardice - This is the only entry in the Spark in the Dark universe that's rated M for mature, and for good reason. HEAVY TRIGGER WARNING AHEAD: It has graphic depictions of sexual abuse against children and child trafficking. The story is that Dick gets injured as Robin and is forced to go to the hospital (as a civilian), Bruce Wayne almost loses custody because of an evil person who has his own malicious motives. While this is happening, Batman uncovers an absolutely disgusting ploy in Gotham

To Catch A Predator - Bruce, Dick, and Alfred go on a family vacation to a small town known for it's fishing scene and find evidence of crimes being committed that only Batman and Robin can solve, only Batman and Robin left their uniforms at home. Despite the title, this fic is not rated M and does not have any depictions of the crimes committed in the show with the same name

The final fic was last updated 12 years ago in 2012. Although the account was last updated in 2021, nothing has been added to this amazing series. Even though it is incomplete, it doesn't really end on a cliffhanger so if you do choose to read it, you don't have to worry about that. Wherever you are, paganpunk2, I hope you're doing well :)

The Mysterious Case of Sonic Movie 3 Marketing

Let me say this right off the bat, I am not an expert in marketing. I took Marketing classes in college for my business minor but most of it was pretty entry level but it gave me a solid foundation to understand most companies' marketing plans. Or at least try to see the method or goal behind the madness to get a scope of what they’re trying to do. But Paramount’s treatment of Sonic 3 is bizarre. We got toys, plushies etc out in stores before the first trailer. 

Sonic Movie 3 has me utterly baffled. Because here we are exactly four months/120 days (122 days at the time of this writing) and do far zip zilch nada. 

The last OFFICIAL news we got for the movie was back on Feb 2nd when the twitter released a little teaser showing the logo as well as some of the additional human cast members. Sure Jon Campea on his Podcast YT show announced that Keanu would play Shadow and was pretty much confirmed by official Hollywood outlets in April but no official word from Paramount has been given. They’ve been radio silent for months know, save for a few weeks in April to promote the Knuckles TV show

So why the wait? Some folks I have talked to may think there may be some internal stuff going on, but I doubt it. Yes Paramount is getting ready to merge with Skydance and some layoffs have happened but I don’t think that would affect much of the Sonic movie day to day. 

So here we are at four months till release and we’re all wondering “It’s go time right? RIGHT?” 

I would think so. And so has the rest of the Sonic Fandom. But alas we’re still waiting for the green light to go. So when is that green light coming?

Honestly, I don’t know. But looking at two other films marketing that run some parallels to S3 as well as some key dates in the next  four months. I'm going to throw some ideas out there. 

First off let's look at the marketing on Sonic 2. Movie was released April 8th 2022, and its first official trailer was released on Dec 9th at the 2021 VGAs (it also had a poster released the day prior on the 8th). So right at the four month mark. They followed up with some TV spots and a special Pre Super Bowl TV spot in February AND then the final Trailer March 14th. So a fairly dense four month marketing campaign. 

The other film to look at is Spider-man No Way Home, which like Sonic 3 had a December release date. NWH after months of rumors and lack of promotion (sound familiar) debuted its first teaser trailer on August 23rd 2021; roughly four months prior to its Dec 17th release date. It also had another final trailer on Nov 16th; roughly one month prior. 

So if we look at both of them we see a very similar four month marketing campaign. So what does that mean for Sonic 3? Let's work backward from the release date till now. The following are dates of significance, IMO to both Paramount, Pop/Nerd/Game culture etc: 

Dec 20th - Release Date 

The Long Wait will be over and we all bask in the Living and Learning of it all 

Nov 28th - Thanksgiving - Possible 2nd Trailer.

Given that Paramount has put Sonic TV spots before Football games before, I would not be surprised if we got the 2nd Trailer during Half Time of the CBS game that airs in the morning of Thanksgiving. This also aligns with the roughly 1 month prior benchmark as seen with both S2 and NWH. 

NYCC Oct 17th-20th - TV Spots/Behind the Scenes/Movie Clip

While this date kinda is little too soon for a second trailer, it would be a great time to bring out the whole cast and do some promotion with the masses and maybe some TV spots or a small clip. 

Transformers One Release Sep 20th - PONR for First Trailer 

I think I can safely say that the absolute LATEST we can expect a trailer for Sonic 3 would nex month with the release of Transformers One. Paramount would have to be utterly brainless NOT to have a trailer for Sonic playing in front of their other Family Nerd Oriented IP.

Gamescom 2024 Oct 20h - 25th - Trailer Release 

Kinda funny how the Opening Night Ceremony for Gamescom just so happens to fall on both the four month till release mark AND a Tuesday (Paramount usually releases trailers on Tues/Thurs)? We KNOW SEGA will be there with more SonicXShadow Generations, but really the movies are more Paramount’s game than SEGAs so there is no guarantee it will be released. BUT Paramount has passed on both Summer Game Fest AND San Diego Comic Con. Everything seems aligned for a reveal on Tuesday. I guess we’ll know if we get a poster revealed  tomorrow. 

Now personally I would have started ramping up the marketing with SDCC. Because right now the two biggest competitors that Sonic 3 is going to have in Dec are Kraven and Mufassa. And both of these movies have had TWO trailers released for it.  With Kraven it makes sense since it was originally supposed to be released back in 2023 but then got pushed back 3 times. So I guess Sony thinks it can rack up a solid week one before the family holiday push. Mufassa on the other hand is going to be the big one to beat as family’s will no doubt flock to the much anticipated origin of Mufasa! That last part was sarcasm but this part is not: they need to get the word out to the casuals. I’ve talked to a lot of Non Sonic who are genuinely excited to see Keanu play Shadow. And the time is right to get them hooked. 

So in the end, I will say that I’m like Jon Snow and I “know nothing” but I do know we're getting to the point where it’s time for paramount to lace up its sneakers and get going. Whether it's this week or the next or maybe till the opening of Transformers One. But I would recommend Paramount not dilly dally. Sonic Fans are easily frustrated and can turn rabid quickly.

so, it’s unsure if ryan was offered to be mac’s male model (unless there’s another source i’ve missed) or another brand’s. either way he turned it down. my guess is that the mac idea came from the fact that he used mac’s products back then.

in the same interview, ryan specifically says:

the author of the article speculates that ryan and pete’s friendship is over [ii]. i can’t find the source for this, nor can i remember what the specific comments were, but i swear that pete did make some shady comments about ryan at one point.

however, it does seem that their relationship is not on negative terms currently. in 2016, pete tweeted this and this about ryan [iii] [iv]. also, this year (2023), pete mentioned ryan in a video fall out boy posted of pete reviewing his old fashion! you can watch it here:

Fic Writer Wrapped- 2023 Edition

I did this in 2022 and 2021, and am revving it back up for my own personal interest in tracking these things. Tagging anyone reading this if you want to participate!

Like in previous years, this is about fic published on ao3 in 2023 (not amount of words written in 2023, which I don't keep track of).

How many stories did you complete?

I completed one longfic (more than 100k words), eight medium fics (between 15k and 100k), and forty-two short fics (under 15k). Just like last year, I continue to have considerable lag between writing and publishing. The longfic and some of the medium fics were mostly written in 2022, but published and finished this year.

What fandoms did you write in this year?

I really committed to the multi-fandom bit. I also discovered an addiction to cdramas. I wrote in Harry Potter, Tolkien, The Grisha Trilogy, Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen, Emma - Jane Austen, Twilight, the Locked Tomb, House of the Dragon, 陈情令 The Untamed, 山河令 Word of Honor, 苍兰诀 Love Between Fairy and Devil, 莲花楼 Mysterious Lotus Casebook, 无量 Wúliàng, and 长月烬明 Till the End of the Moon.

Did you write more, less, or roughly about what you expected?

This year's published word count borrows from many projects that were written in 2022, probably about 150k words' worth. Even subtracting that, I wrote a lot more than I expected. Because I didn't write a long fic this year (123k of Rainbow of Chaos's total of 130k words was written in 2022), I felt like I was unproductive compared to previous years. But I actually I wrote a lot!

What’s your favorite story of the year?

To catch a fox (Grisha verse, the Darkling/Nikolai). I had a blast writing this, it felt like it wrote itself, and I think the fic is so much fun, I still enjoy re-reading it, and I'm really happy about how many other people liked it as well!

What is your most underappreciated story of the year?

This question gets harder and harder to answer every year, because the more deliberately niche I write the happier I am when I get a single comment and feel that is more than sufficient appreciation. I guess if I had to pick one, it's my Aredhel/Celegorm fic, because imo this ship deserves to be more popular than it is!

Biggest fanfic-related disappointment of 2023?

I was riding the high of discovering the Darkling/Nikolai ship after watching the TV show Shadow and Bone in March. A good friend left a prompt that I loved, in an event called Fandom Orienteer, which had a several-month-long writing period and then a posting window in August. I bit off more than I could chew when I started writing Palace in the Dark, found my ideas too plotty, and did not finish in time to post a completed story in August. By the time I actually finished over Thanksgiving, not only did I miss being part of the event, I had lost almost all my WIP readers (except my friends from the darkolai server, shout out to you, you are the best!). It's fine, the fic is finished and complete on my profile, and readers will slowly find it. But I was disappointed in not being able to finish in July for the event and when the momentum from the show was hotter.

Biggest fanfic-related surprise of 2023?

I'm surprised by how many multi-fandom exchanges I did. I was only dipping my toe into them in 2022 and was not sure the whole thing really suited me. I wrote almost forty exchange fics this year, and got some amazing gift fics in exchange, and it's been really fun.

Something you look forward to working on in 2024?

I think I'll work on more villain-centric fic for MDZS, and also hopefully write more new-to-me fandoms for exchanges.

I was thinking about Catawissa, PA Friday night. Or, I was thinking about Centralia, actually, and how strange it was that I went to this abandoned pit of poisonous fumes when I could barely breathe. (Let the mirror express the room.)

I've said this before, but Pennsylvania, and the whole Appalachian mountain range, really, is the most haunted place I've ever experienced in my life. Something in my brain short circuits and I can't believe all that is real. I had some assumption that the east coast would be boring, well traveled, but I feel more like we got to this big haunted island and ran until the hair stopped standing up on the back of our necks.

Accidentally happened upon about two months later when I got hospitalized. Had completely forgotten that I had read Z's book just a day or two before that. I hope Z is doing well. I think about the people I've met on here all the time. The kind of people I like just want to be forgotten and left alone. Which makes me some kind of parasite roaming the abandoned canyons of Hell. Am I like that? (A loner?) Maybe a little. I like to riff. Bounce ideas and riff. Discourse a little.

Ah. My thought was: That road trip to see Patrick in Vermont, July 2021, was not that long ago really. Three years or so. It's okay to spend a long ellipsis working and gaining XP. I was "away". Living this life I'm living. And then I lived again. No biggie.

I saw this color, International Orange, and thought, that should be my blog color. But it is, already. I got rid of those old zines from 2005-2010. Then I decided against it but it was too late. So it looks a little different.

I watched some kind of web lecture from my oldest friend. My first love. Her voice is so different. I really like it. She's very moody, and I really like her perspective on being trans. That it's not about something essential, but about embodying the imagination, pulling it into immediacy. I like that. My body has always been sort of a moot point. Its a deeply inertial mass. Haha. It's fat, and sick. There's no secondary sex characteristics to object to. I simply object. Over the course of my adulthood, I have embraced a sort of anti-gender. The sort of soft butch of the young Jodi Foster. Perverse virginal naive sexuality. It's it's own thing. I know I'm supposed to want to be sexy and hairy or curvaceous, or colorful, but being a present negation feels appropriate to some larger project that is uniquely my own.

I could be wrong though. Embodiment would really be the unraveling of each of my problems, one by one. For some reason, I'm a ghost now. I won't bother getting depressed about it. Like I said, this has been only a short while. Even if every word I type feels intimately close to the conclusion of my life on Earth.

I keep thinking about hygge. Independently of the Danish Marxists. They don't live the treat life in Norway. Sit at home. No treats. Just hygge. All I did Saturday is run around and procure treats for myself. Left the apartment early and didn't come back until 2:00. Got absorbed in photoshop and then left at 6:00 again. Listened to a bunch of old episodes of Acid Horizon. Keeping those bad thoughts off the porch.

Walked into the grocery store and realized everyone was shopping for Thanksgiving. That made me feel like shit. There's no reason to. I could end up getting invited somewhere. What's a Thursday? I got myself a pot pie, mashed potatoes, and some ice cream. Just so I won't feel left out. I want to pick up some muffins for the holiday weekend so I have something while everything is closed for four days. Not like that's how it works anymore.

I'm ready for the house.

so, picture me: a person wanting to write a hatchetfield fic. the main character is Richie, and for plot purposes, I need to find when his fall break is. (for non-americans, that's the break from school that you get in the fall/autumn, usually over Thanksgiving.)

now, I live absolutely nowhere close to Michigan (where Hatchetfield is) but I do live in the US, and where I live each county has a neat little calendar with all the breaks, days off, and other useful information I would like to know if I'm writing about a character in a high school. So I assume that, of course, other counties would have something like this.

So the first thing I have to figure out is where the hell Hatchetfield is. The Langs are pretty general when they talk about it, saying (as far as I know) that it's in Michigan, on an island.

Now, do you know how many islands are in Michigan? Lemme tell you. A fucking lot.

So I give up on my original idea of "hey, what if I turn an already existing island into Hatchetfield" and instead say "hey, what if I just completely cram a new island in there".

So I go through each county individually, and check which have islands, and which don't. At the end, I come up with three counties, which I'm going to have to pick from.

The first two I don't remember the names of, but the third one is Mackinac County. I do a bit of research to see if it would make sense, and that sends me on a deep dive about the history of colonization in Michigan. But in the end, it seems pretty reasonable.

But wait! A nearby county is apparently named after my native american tribe! this I've got to see!

I look it up, and apparently a big number of Ojibwe people (I'm Ojibwe) live in Michigan. So immediately I'm like "hey, what if Hannah Foster is Ojibwe?"

Now, I don't know if I'm alone in this, but Hannah is definitely some kind of Native American (from her mom.) I mean, you could send an ask and I could go on a whole deep dive about it.

But that's not the point of this story. The point is that now I'm trying to see if I can write an Ojibwe!Hannah properly (I barely know the language 😭) and in order to do that, I have to figure out what reservation she's most likely from (at least, in my fic.)

Eventually I figure it out, and say, yeah I can write her. Partially, I'm making this post so I have motivation to write her, because if not it's just gonna go on the shelf in my brain forever.

Anyway, I end up choosing Mackinac County, partially because of that. So then I try to find a school calendar for *checks notes* 2020-2021.

Now, remember when I said that I thought all counties had a calendar? Well, I was WRONG.

I. Could. Find. NOTHING.

After getting derailed and going on a deep dive of the history of Michigan cities (did you know that there are four cities named Des Moines in the US? And that the one in Iowa used to be part of Michigan?) I eventually found a school district website that had a calendar. Unfortunately, the search function did not work, but the calendar in the menu did, so *shrug*. Also unfortunately, the calendar was not a pdf, just a webpage, so I couldn't find anything for 2020-2021 (I tried Wayback Machine, but nothing came up.) I also tried doing some more digging, but nothing.

In the end, I ended up saying, "well the school calendar can't have possibly changed in the past few years" and just using the one on the website. I also give him an extra day (although it hasn't been mentioned in the fic yet) because it's honestly unfair he only gets four days.

Is Brazil’s Supreme Court Saving Democracy or Threatening It? (NYT) Daniel Silveira, a policeman turned far-right Brazilian congressman, was furious. He believed Brazil’s Supreme Court was persecuting conservatives and silencing them on social media, and he wanted to do something about it. So he sat on his couch and began recording. “How many times have I imagined you getting beat up on the street,” he said in a 19-minute diatribe against the court’s justices. France's Macron calls for an end to arms exports used in Gaza and Lebanon (Reuters) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and French President Emmanuel Macron are getting into a mud-slinging fight for all the world to see. Last week, Macron called for an arms embargo on Israel, saying that the country needed to find a political solution to its issues in Gaza and Lebanon. Netanyahu responded with an angry video posted on X, calling Macron (and others calling for an arms embargo on Israel) a “disgrace.” On Tuesday (this week), Macron reportedly made statements during a closed-door meeting with French ministers, saying that Netanyahu should not “ignore United Nations decisions” because “his country was created by a U.N. decision.” Israel has repeatedly called for the dismantling of UNRWA, the UN agency that provides aid for Palestinian refugees, and is looking to pass legislation barring the organization from operating in Israeli territory—a decision the UNRWA warns will essentially “disintegrate” its services in Gaza and the West Bank. The June-September monsoon season has receded in northern parts of the country. ok someone may have already asked this but I’m curious, how did the idea for newsbees even come about?

luckily I have the discord receipts so I can relay WORD FOR WORD how I first started telling people about it and when

it was early November 2021, and I was reading many bees fics-- devouring longfics when possible, many of which were some genuinely very impressive AUs

I'd never really written anything like that before, and I found myself going "hmm, that might be fun... but I'm so picky about AUs having conceptual synergy, I can't imagine what I'd even do if I wanted to tackle something like that. I guess if I were ever to get the One Perfect Idea that would be one thing but that's Future Me's problem"

and I was just sitting there sort of vibing on that when my brain, nearly instantly, went NEWSIES!!! OBVIOUSLY, YOU'D DO NEWSIES!!, and Future Me became Present Me just like that

I couldn't possibly tell you what stimuli I saw that made me think of it, other than that I love Newsies and I love the bees and the parallels were sort of immediately and intuitively apparent to me. so then I started saying to basically everyone I know "it turns out blake wears high socks and a newsboy cap and inspires people to unionize is exactly the kind of stupid idea I will NEVER let go" (<- direct quote). the concept just... haunted me, all the time. I knew no one would ever write it BUT me and I also knew it would be The Perfect Thing To Write, so. what was I to do??

by late November I was flying home for Thanksgiving and read, on the plane, the Houdini book that included the "shake me, I'm magic" anecdote and it's like a key turned in my brain

I spent most of that holiday season daydreaming about the various potential fire escape scenes and the panic attack/bed sharing/waking up together that now ends chapter 12 and starts chapter 13

@theseerasures bought me Scrivener for Hanukkah that year and I started working on an actual draft (rather than scribbling in a scratch document for notes and ideas) in January of 2022. then I spent the entire next year writing it, mostly in 3k-6k bursts on the weekends because I was too burned out from my job during the week to get anything done. my goal was to have it completed and posted before v9 happened, but I'm rather glad it worked out this way instead.

Space Ghost Coast to Coast #75: “Fire Ant” | December 10, 1999 | S06E07

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Even though I’m currently visiting another state and sleeping in a different house, I still do all I can to make sure Space Ghost Week trucks along without interruption. It sure beats speaking to my family. 

Fire Ant! Another “special” “experimental” “episode” of “Space Ghost” “Coast to Coast”. This one features Conan O’Brien and, more famously, a special little fire ant that becomes Space Ghost’s friend. This is a pretty normal episode, as a matter of fact; just Space Ghost talking to Conan O’Brien while weird jokes and cutaways happen. Suddenly, Space Ghost gets distracted by a little ant on the floor and decides to follow it. Then, he does, for roughly half of the episode’s running time. This is a double-length episode, by the way, so he wordlessly follows this ant for the length of a normal episode. 

Wordlessly? Well, he does hum and he sorta starts singing to himself and he sorta says words there a little bit. He not only follows the ant across the studio floor, but also outside, and against various backdrops. At one point, Space Ghost even follows the ant in front of Sealab, making Sealab 2021 an actual canonical Space Ghost spin-off. Eventually Space Ghost follows the ant all the way home. He complains to the ant’s oversized parent or guardian that the ant bit him. Space Ghost is attacked and chased off while he yells “YOUR SON IS A MORON”. End of episode. 

I never did see the premiere of this, even though I was a fairly regular viewer this season. I don’t think I saw the full-length Fire Ant until the DVD came out. I almost didn’t believe that the 30 minute version actually existed. Despite this episode’s reputation as a conceptual episode, my familiarity with it was with the 15-minute version, which cuts out Space Ghost’s quiet and patience-trying trek across the universe. It doesn’t necessarily feel like it was missing anything to those of us blissfully unaware of the full version. I always thought this was an exceptional episode even when watching the condensed cut. The ant-following stretch of the show only makes me fonder of it. Now that I own the full episode you’ll never catch me fast-forwarding or subbing it for the short version. This is art, goddamnit.

I fucking love the bit where Space Ghost complains that he was rejected for his pitch about a TV show where Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny were teenagers, and he was a teenager too, and they solve mysteries, and also they were pirates. The idea of pitching a teenage Daffy and Bugs is already very funny, but the joke peaks when Space Ghost casually mentions including himself hanging out with them, also as a teenager. It goes a little too far with the pirate thing. Piracy is no laughing matter. You wouldn’t steal a car...

This episode features an illuminating DVD extra: the Conan Raw Interview. Conan has to be one of the least-flappable Space Ghost guests ever. The problem with that is, you get so few moments that feel spontaneous; Conan answers every question very calmly and goes with the flow so much that he almost feels completely scripted. The show wants odd, awkward moments to play with more than anything else. There is so much stuff in here that went unused. I literally felt myself get frustrated on the show’s behalf; sensing certain questions that would have disarmed other guests and watching as Conan level-headedly answer them made me groan in places.

Conan seems like a fun guy to talk to and joke with, but if I were filming our conversation for use in my retro-scripted, post-modern superhero-themed talk show spoof I would be tearing my hair out. Just furrow your goddamn brow once, motherfucker. That said, the very few moments where Conan comes off human must’ve formed the entire basis for the interview. It’s on Youtube if you look for it. Search “Conan Raw Interview Space Ghost”, probably!

I heard they showed the full episode as part of the 2023 April Fools programming stunt. I didn't know that. Neat!

I don't remember if it was Table Read or Curling Flower Spaces, but one of those episodes had the first instance of "damn" in a Space Ghost episode... hugely scandalous at the time. Oh, and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!

Hey! Happy Thanksgiving to all of my pals and homers. I did not realize this! Curling Flower Space has "damned lie", but Table Read has them repeating "damn" a few times because it's contained in a contentious line of dialogue they are discussing.

A moment similar to this was I remember an episode of Ren & Stimpy where they repeat the word "crappy" over and over, which for some reason is a word I deemed exactly one notch worse than "damn" and "hell" in my own understanding of the hierarchy of swears. It's nice seeing standards and practices like this thaw. I wish I knew to appreciate it at the time.
