You probably already knew this, but I was going through my records and I noted the Rolling Stones' Beggars Banquet (the album that opens with Sympathy For The Devil) closes with a song called Salt Of The Earth just in case that album needed to be more MJF-coded
Yes! Actually, my dad said this to me after he returned and shows up with the mask, making the entrance to Sympathy For The Devil, and I was shocked. It’s perfect. It’s brilliant. It’s absolutely extraordinary.
Thank you for sharing the fact with me. It’s so incredible. If that day, if that moment was the last Punk/MJF interaction we’ll see, well it certainly was perfect. Like the rest of the feud.

Happy STS! What is the best novel you've ever read? What did you like about it, from a storytelling perspective? Has it influenced or informed your own approach?
Damn, you're gonna make my head spin with this one! Thanks for the question!
I'll say Riddle-Master by Patricia A. McKillip for fiction and Desert Solitaire by Edward Abby for non-fiction.
I've always loved Riddle-Master's use of multiple perspective, the way everything comes together, and how so many details mean something different the second time reading it. So that's has been an influence.
And Desert Solitaire is just such a vibe of ticked off, misanthrope who loves nothing but the beauty of the natural world (and liquor). I had family who lived in Nevada growing up and was always obsessed about the Mojave ever since I got to visit as a kid, but Desert Solitaire (though a different desert) certainly fostered my obsession.
The Godslayer duology is also on my list because it's told primarily from the "villains'" POVs and set me on a path to be really interested in stories that explore that maybe no sides are doing a 100% perfect job.

For the OC ask game
For Alder...Where did you meet Hawthorn for the first time? And when and how did you realize you were in love with him?
(Thanks for the ask my friend :D)
Alder coughed in his fist, his eyes glancing away from you before he rubbed the back of his head. How he met Hawthorn and when did he fell in love with him... that was a day he would never forget.
"It was... a few years ago, when I was scouting in the forest. I stumbled upon Hawy being beaten by a group of bandits, and I could not stand by and let them harm an innocent man. So, I stopped the attack and nursed him back to health once it was over. As I healed him..." he merely chuckled, a small smile on his face. "Let us just say that it was love at first sight... I was surprised to feel that way then, and even now. I thought that such a thing was only in fairy tales..."
He sighed dreamily, daydreaming of his loving, sweet Hawy...

I’m listening to this podcast called Articles of Interest that tracks Ivy fashion from origins to present day, and idk why but I feel like you might really like it. Fascinating how engaging an audio history about a very visual medium can be. Happy almost new year!
OOOOOH, I just looked this up, and it sounds amazing, adding it to my library as we speak--thank you for thinking of me and rec'ing it!

Chuuya's reaction to Dazai getting hurt during the Lovecraft fight has always been so interesting to me...
Tumblr media
Because it's the kind of worry you'd never expect from a character as gruff as Chuuya, who had displayed nothing but hostility towards Dazai so far. Usually, characters that are labelled as "angry" or "anger issues" (which Chuuya is much more complex than that but you get my point) act more as a tsundere type of way when the one they "don't care about" gets hurt. And show their care in very, very subtle ways (ex. their eyes widen, their mouth parts and closes again, etc) before putting up their front once more.
Chuuya, however, is open, and vocal about it. His worry is clear not only to us, but to Dazai himself, the one he shouldn't be displaying the concern to (as per the cliche). Shouldn't it be some sort of secret that Chuuya does care? Isn't that what skk's dynamic has been shaping up to be until now?
I'm telling you- the way my mind blanked when Chuuya just casually.... showed concern not once, but twice, was a sight to see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Besides, the context makes it much more confusing, because Dazai isn't some rookie, and Chuuya knows that more than anybody. He was the youngest executive in Port Mafia's history, of course he can handle a hit or two. Of course he'd seen him handle a hit or two, sometimes without batting an eye.
Heck, Chuuya himself was hurling Dazai like a ragdoll in their reunion, which was their last meeting. And you could argue that he was going easy on him, but Dazai has mostly withstood the same damage (as far as I could see), and Chuuya was as bitter as ever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So that kind of contradicts both what we knew of Chuuya so far, and how their dynamic was shaped to be. I mean, that just makes Chuuya a hypocrite, yeah? What makes him care now, all of a sudden? What makes him care at all?
Well, to me, this backasswards reaction implies one (or more) of the following:
- Dazai rarely got physically hurt during their partnership and thus this is an unexpected thing for him to see (during a mission).
- The four years of separation made Chuuya unsure of how much Dazai can withstand physically now. Also the fact that he isn't in the mafia anymore, aka fighting enemy organizations on the weekly, would naturally make Dazai lose his touch in a way, what prompts Chuuya's reaction.
- Dazai getting taken off guard took him off guard which led to panic. Especially since the situation was (momentarily) out of their depth. Seriously wtf even was Lovecraft?
- During the dungeon scene Dazai was an enemy, while in the Lovecraft fight he was as an ally. The difference might be significant to Chuuya.
- This has always been Chuuya's reaction to Dazai getting hurt regardless of the situation.
- "Only I can hurt him like that" ahh logic
- Asagiri was still experimenting with their dynamic and thus there are some inconsistencies.
This scenario didn't play out again (after their reunion) for me to exactly determine which one is more plausible, but it is 100% canon for Chuuya to shamelessly show his concern and run to Dazai to check on him before properly dealing with their opponent, which I find to be such an appealing layer to their dynamic, and a good spin on the type of character he gets stereotyped as.
Bonus: Dazai also becomes a softy when Chuuya's hurt, especially post corruption. Dead Apple alone displays that multiple times.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all, Skk are doing a terrible job at maintaining their 'hostile' and 'antagonistic' relationship post their reunion. Freaks.

Me before completing the forest temple: okay I get that ocarina of time is fun and nostalgic for people but it’s a bit of a stretch to call it one of the greatest video games of all time
Me after completing the forest temple: By revealing that Link is not a Kokiri, but a Hylian, the game effectively strips him of his humble origins amongst a group of people that already fail to recognize him in his adult form. Thus, kokiri village instantly becomes a location that is no longer Link’s home in any sense, exacerbated by the fact that the game now loads up in the temple of time instead of Link’s bedroom— he is a stranger in the only place that has ever been familiar to him and he is depressingly reduced to his destiny alone. However, the subsequent introduction of the time travel mechanic, which allows the player to travel from the horrific apocalyptic future back to the idyllic past of Link’s childhood, gives new meaning to the idea of this “destiny”. In effect, Link is not a stock “chosen one”, but a protagonist who consciously decides to fight onwards. Link’s dual existence as a child who knows the grim future and as an adult who was powerless to stop disaster gives a sort of desperation to his character, because while it brings the player relief to revisit the Castle Town that is populated by cheerful villagers instead of lurking zombies, the story can only be progressed through the acknowledgement of reality — the decision to make those seven years pass again. Therefore, both the player and Link as a character must be proactive in their heroism and make the conscious choice to struggle onwards despite the darkness that permeates—
