Thursday, June 13th, 2024: First Day Walking Tour
Thursday, June 13th: Walking Tour in London
We landed in London around 6:30am and made our way to the tube. Although the public transportation system is chaotic, it is extremely useful. The tube, the buses, and even Uber boats can get you anywhere in the city for a good price.
The day consisted of seeing our nearby neighborhoods. There is an incredible amount of culture and activities in every corner of the city. Throughout the day we saw Chinatown, Soho, Seven Dials, Leicester Square and multiple other neighborhoods.
In each part of the city, there are different cultures to experience. The food specifically was much more diverse than I expected. In Chinatown, of course, there were Japanese, Chinese, Thai, and other southeast Asian restaurants. In Seven Dials, there was Greek, British, Italian, and Indian food. Every street seemed to have a restaurant that had vegan or vegetarian options. London is clearly the melting pot of England.
There is art with every square inch of the city. Whether it be street art, museums, or beautiful architecture, there is something very visually pleasing about the city. It is such a stark contrast from being in the US. Seeing a Five Guys in a chapel-like building feels so ironic yet fitting. With England being so historical, they have so many spots where it is perfect to have average businesses in the most beautiful building.
So far this trip is eventful and educational. I’m very excited to see how the rest of the week goes and what else I can learn from this city!

9 people I would like to get to know better
Tagged by @colourme-feral at this post here. Thanks dear friend! 🥰 Because of your post you got me Googling packing cubes as well, but my fallback has always been resealable (and reusable, so not single-use) plastic bags for socks and underwear when packing. 👍
last song: I've been listening to two lately, back and forth. One is ஒரு தெய்வம் தந்த பூவே/Oru Deivam Thantha Poove (O Flower Gifted from a God), a hauntingly beautiful ode sung in the voice of an adoptive mother to her adopted child, recommended to me by dear friend @neuroticbookworm. It's a precious gift, and I need to read the translated lyrics to fully grasp how the melody amplifies the meaning, but each time I listen to this it brings a little tear to my eye.
youtube
The second is uplifting in a different way – เธอหมุนรอบฉัน ฉันหมุนรอบเธอ (You Revolve Around Me, I Revolve Around You) by Scrubb, introduced to me by dear @recentadultburnout. It's a jaunty, retro-style Thai song that was also in the 2gether soundtrack and is an instant serotonin booster.
youtube
favorite color: Deepest blue.
last movie/tv show: Ack. Does Wheel of Fortune count? I also watched an old episode of Nigella Express on YouTube, so let's go with that:
youtube
I love the sound of Nigella's voice and her breezy approach while demonstrating eminently doable recipes. But I was actually using this episode to hone my location-tracking skills... Nigella and her daughter Mimi can be seen stopping by a bakery on the way to her daughter's school at timestamp 4.50 – there are enough visual clues in there to track down the location of the bakery (Boulangerie Poilâne at Elizabeth Street in London) and also Mimi's school (Francis Holland School for Girls at Graham Terrace). Purely an intellectual exercise, and quell the alarms please – the episode is from 2007 and Mimi has long since grown up and graduated, so there's no privacy risk. (Both the school and the bakery in 2023 are still at the same locations they were in 2007, though Poilâne – I love the one in Paris – has had a paint job and looks quite a bit different today).
sweet/spicy/savory: Sweet wins out (confirmed chocoholic that I am), but I also LOVE my spicy prik kee noo, and every meal must also be protein-heavy, so savory gets a shout-out too. (As you can probably tell I find it hard to make decisions, especially around food. 😂)
relationship status: Attached, and have been for a very long time.
current obsession: Fruitcake! A post for a three-ingredient fruitcake popped up on my YouTube feed, and because we're heading into the Yuletide season I became obsessed with making fruitcake in time for Christmas. I've been churning out variations ever since the first one fell a little bit short of expectations, and because of my tweaks it's more like eight ingredients now, so… not quite the time and labor saving hack I envisioned. But it's a delicious obsession nonetheless, plus I get to eat lots of fruitcake along the way.
last thing I googled: Fruitcake recipes! Especially for ideas on how to reduce FODMAPs.
No pressure tags: @pandasmagorica, @bengiyo, @solitaryandwandering, @shinybiancachu, @sillybiscuitshepherdskeleton, @respectthepetty, @teaofdesaster, @lurkingteapot, @sunshinechay.
Only listed nine because those are the rules of this game (literally in the header) but if I haven't tagged you dear friends, please know that I wanted to and if you would like to play please do. Always fun to get to know people better here! 💖

LONDON, LATELY - WHERE TO EAT
Its been a while since we last chatted here and I can't believe the year is already coming to an end in a couple of weeks - me and you same. Thought I'd compile some of my recent favourite spots around the city, especially since there are so many travelling to London around this time of the year and it is always a question I get on where to go, what to see and what to eat. I'll break down this segment in two different posts to not make it so lengthy.
So here it is; London lately from the diary of a twenty seven year old girlie girl.
Where To Eat | Restaurants:
Ramo - A Japanese-Filipino ramen spot in the middle of Soho. Not one to usually go for ramen but this hits the spot with a balance of flavours, comfort and spice. Try the Pandesal Garlic Bread for starters.
Fallow - Definitely one of the best spots we went to this year. Straight forward British food menu with a modern, extremely flavourful take. I loved the corn ribs, mushroom parfait, cod's head and veggie burger.
Roe - A sister to Fallow located in Canary Wharf. Similar menu but with a different appeal and ambience - so amazing.
Broadway Market - Our top most visited market this year. We would go at least every two weeks on a Saturday because that is when the good food stalls are out. We've got our standard stalls that we love - Frenchie for Ashwyn's duck burger and fries and for me it is actually the tiny Koya hut tucked in between the market. Koya for their udon bowls and it is extremely comforting on a cold day especially. We recently discovered Benny's, a family own ice cream spot and they've got banana pudding! Inspired by Magnolia Bakery's famous Banana Pudding in NYC, this is the closest to it and trust when I say, it really hits the spot.
Netil Market - Another market we've been frequently visiting this year too as it is just a 5 mins walk from Broadway Market. Less crowded, less food options too but really good ones with what they have - pizza, bagels, noodles and a sandwich stall.
Toba - An Indonesian spot in the middle of St James, Piccadily. An elegant-modern Indonesian ambience with your favourite staples in a more elevated manner.
Alley Cats Pizza - If you are looking for a New York style pizza spot, this is it in Marylebone. Immediately transports you to a different setting with its brick walls, wood-fire pizza scent and evening light.
Bao Noodle Shop - The famous Bao chain around London but their outlet on Redchurch, Shoreditch specialises in noodles while still offering their crowd favourite baos.
Sucre - For a night to celebrate, this Argentinian restaurant has a really romantic ambience and food is nothing too complicated - we loved celebrating our Q1 accomplishments here.
Smoking Goat - For a fun & flavourful Thai cuisine, this Redchurch gem definitely is a favourite. There was something about sitting on the kitchen table as well that made the overall experience even better.
Ria's - A Chicago style Pizza spot in Notting Hill. This spot is the perfect GNO dinner location.
26 Grains - An all time favourite and I love that the menu is seasonal too so there is always something new to try.
Farmer J - A lunch favourite go-to and mostly around business areas in the city. Simple, healthy, fast.
Som Saa - Another amazing Thai spot in Liverpool Street. So flavourful, spicy and just nice to go in a big group to try different things.

Uhm i did find the south east Asian or Thai areas and the Irish China areas....and the way Africanism kind of closely joins by district China areas and I was white and I had a PTSD panic attack till I look like a robot and can't ever go to China
Megan Walsh I tend to experience contradiction in peace diplomacy motive because China did have to send a lot of production to Hong kong and i do experience benefit from China if it removes irishness from whites
Sedation appeals to die for animal rights billboards....sidewalks left gross and intuitively about abused raped minors I was white and I have problems with Jews who won't say what Nazis made them clean the sidewalk with instead of they had to clean the sidewalk
If Africans were negroes they would show me where the outside supplies are I hate unclean sidewalk I hate it
That and magnolia and other streets have problems trying to burn down their own buildings with trespassing signs
Trespassing biblically on farmer boys does literally mean that they get to rape incarcerate the fiefs and steal their plot of campesino land and their emancipated right to livestock and land cultivation
If it's animal rights if farmer boys steals the homeless fiefs livestock then those goats have been trapped in the dirt for most of the time I have been aware they exist they won't let their hooves be in the grass or let them eat grassy flowers
Anyway there is apparently better money in training fire personnel because farmer boys is right by the new fire station and a little demonstration of control burn is right there
So I wouldn't go to China India or the Hindus temple to practice or their Africans and they have legal and illegal contracts with white racists and white racists hit things terroristically for normal reasons
I wasn't sure where white racists learned that quick of consciousless movement in the Chinatown new York film....but Africans are still illegal people here sometimes
If their south east Asians or Thai areas I have to have relief from PTSD belligerent do it because it existed prior 9/11 has to leave my consciousness there
Irishness republican party tends to uphold as establishments things London mommies like Johnson and Johnson good lawed they put inapplicable foreign drugs in stuff so immigration could largely remove me and I kept being removed as an automatic habits it can't shut off
I've found out about China that things about it's production that appears southern masterly those are things old folks homes do need and it became a sold commodity instead of an independent living
China production has a urine smell that can't be isolated to a genetic factor so to me those are things for an elderly population to have an independent living building and it finds its way into shopping
Its been my experience of irishness that if it's been any creepy energy that I can't cope with it's avidly interested in it for new left underground studies....and work yet has made no restitution statement towards me for claiming the states wants it
If it's irishness it has a very avid interest in my most private disease cruelties as claims these energies are not catatonic but can be made active
So sometimes I get taken away as white to black and tan fantasy worlds because Irish bars were selling my most private rape suffering
So that's the lawsuit I prefer to give India China irishness will want to priestly master a very private matter then wants indigenous people to work it and stalk me to remind me of it or forced catharsis or claim of necessity where there is none
Its the Dublin institute of advanced studies that continues to take astronomical interest in new left underground Chicago
Peace man in San Diego wrote that priests take most interest masonically in boys I could have birthed boys
Its only the Irish that continue to force focus on your sisters death first menstrual cycle even Jews i don't know show up as foreign common people and refuse to put that in my food or cleaner

London has a magnificent past, world-renowned landmarks, and a lively student life; therefore, it is a promising town for students. However, living in the capital can be tough--dealing with the high expenses is particularly hard. Those who are near broke may find it extremely stressful to eat out; however, go ahead and try it London is rife with places that offer finger-licking foods to students for low prices. Here is your final compilation of the places in town where you cannot pay but will be happy, check them out.
Borough Market – The Food Haven
If you are into diversity, then Borough Market is your sure pick. Being on the southern side of London means you can choose Thai curry or palatable Italian pasta. Although the area is full of people you can have your fill in a meal under £10 if you know where to look in the stalls. For real, find street food vendors selling the cheapest and the most pungent treats.
Must-Try: Gym-ed cheese sandwiches at Kappacasein.
Flat Iron – For Steak Lovers
Are you lusting after a steak job that is as well done as a concert but with something missing? Flat Iron is the answer. Student discounts apply, and besides that, they dish up meat as tender as a kiss for just £12. They ironically serve free popcorn while you wait thereby stylising your meal.
Pro Tip: Survive the rush hours by coming earlier than usual, this joint is quite the star.
Franco Manca – Sourdough Pizza Perfection
Franco Manca is a great place for those who love pizza and their low-cost genuine sourdough bases and fresh toppings are just a couple of the reasons why people keep coming back. Besides the aforementioned places, there are multiple restaurants all over London that even have a happily priced slice.
Recommended Order: A classic Margherita or the meat special.
Dishoom – Bombay Breakfast on a Budget
Dishoom brings a bit of the flavour of India with its reasonably priced breakfast menu that is Universally favoured among early risers. Their Bacon Naan Roll is a thing of beauty for only £7.50 and to add to that, their bottomless house chai will just sip you to nirvana. The warm, inviting ambience adds to the experience, making it a student favourite.
Insider Tip: Visit before 11:45 AM to catch their breakfast deals.

Budget-Friendly Choice: Opt for the lunchtime menu, with dishes starting at £6.
Honest Burgers – Burgers with a Twist
Freshly grilled patties and original taste blends are the specialities of Honest Burgers. The Honest Burger (around £12) is served along with rosemary-salted fries, creating a complete meal. Vegetarian and vegan options are also available without losing any of the taste flavours.
Bonus: Look out for student discounts in several locations.
Camden Market – A Street Food Paradise
Camden Market is a goldmine when it comes to street food and the stalls offer everything from Mexican tacos to Japanese ramen. You can have a filling meal for less than £8 and, at the same time, soak in the cluttered scenario of the market. This is the best place to go out with your friends on weekends and have a good time.
Don't Miss: The Halloumi Fries or the Korean BBQ wraps.
Roti King – Cheap and Cheerful Malaysian Dishes
Roti King, which is hidden away near Euston, offers true Malaysian food that costs very little. Their very own Roti Canai with Curry (only £7) is both fulfilling and delightfully tasty which is why students recommend it. Even though the space is small, the food is even greater.
Tips: Sometimes there might be a rush to go around the peak hours.
Wasabi – Sushi on the Way and More
Wasabi has sushi and other Asian-inspired hot meals for anyone who is in the mood for such a treat. In their sushi sets and bento boxes, which are ongoing promotions, prices are low like £6.50. The place is ideal for a quick meal during the break of the day or when visiting the city.
A popular choice is chicken Katsu sushi Curry.
Pret a Manger – Grab-And-Go Healthy Food
It's best to Pret a Manger when you're short of time but still need something nutritious. Their variety of sandwiches, soups, and salads is not only budget-friendly but also nourishing. Furthermore, you can save up on their extra student loyalty program theirs.
Quick Hack: Try their evening discounts on leftover items.
Some Ways to Save More on Food in London
Use Student Discounts: A lot of places accept a valid student ID and behave nicely. Ask them!
Explore Apps: You can download mobile applications such as Too Good To Go or Olio and thus get undervalued or free food.
Pack Your Lunch: Put some money into durable containers and sometimes create meals at home to have enough money left over to save.
Lunch Specials: Some of the restaurants are setting the Lunch Menus at a cheaper price, and therefore, visit them during the day.
Find Affordable Accommodation While Studying in the UK
Eating on the cheap is just one of the two main fields of the issue—getting affordable student accommodation is of equal importance. If you are looking for secure and student-friendly housing in the UK, you can check Student Tenant out. The company provides a service that helps students, who are searching for convenient and cost-effective places, find them, and as such, it is no wonder they stick to these places near their universities. Thus, the residential properties of the company have been verified, and you can easily choose from a great number of accommodations that match the budget and needs you already have.London can remain financially sound if you know where to go for a bite to eat. With this guide in hand, you would then have the opportunity to enjoy the city through its hundreds of little eateries. So, no longer will you need to drain your pockets to try different cuisines that the city is so famous for. Enjoy your meals and happy exploring!

WEEK 8: LAST HURRAH
Hi everyone! If this is your first time coming across my blog, my name is Jules, and I’ve been studying abroad in Prague for 8 weeks now. I can’t believe I’m sitting here documenting my final week in this amazing city. This international experience has truly been one of the best decisions I have ever made and has gifted me with one unforgettable summer. Now let me jump into a quick recap of my week. (Side note: sorry this blog post is delayed; I will get into the treacherous reason why in my next blog.)
After coming home from Amsterdam, I immediately locked in to study for my Linear Algebra final. It ended up going super smoothly, and I am very satisfied with my overall grade and performance in this course. All the math classes in my program collectively took a field trip to Prague’s Technical Museum on Tuesday. It was interesting to see the impact of engineering on this country’s technology and industry through the development of automobiles, aircrafts, bicycles, and ships. I am so grateful to have taken this course in such a dynamic environment with equally amazing professors and classmates!
Before leaving our host country, my friends and I had to squeeze in our last family dinners. On Tuesday night, a huge group of us grabbed dinner at a traditional Czech restaurant that was actually recommended to us by Petra (our professor from Art & Architecture in the Golden City), which I thought was a very fitting last meal. One of the things that I loved most about this study abroad experience was the friendships I have built. Thinking about going back to school and seeing them around campus makes me so excited. The following night on Wednesday, my apartment had our last dinner together at a pizza restaurant right down the street. I’m going to miss living with them so much!! And after dinner, we of course had to end things off the Prague way by going out together one last time. Shoutout to my absolute favorite, Dog Bar, for giving me and my friends some of the most unforgettable nights here.
Last dinners. && Final group pics.
On Thursday night after a full day of packing up, my mom and my sister arrived!! I spent the next few days showing them around my beautiful host country and giving them a taste of my life here for the past 8 weeks. Now, we’re headed to Paris, London, and Genoa to end off my unbelievably long summer traveling and living from suitcase to suitcase!!
Fam's arrival! && Last views of Prague.
To reminisce a little, here are some top things I’m going to miss about Prague (the little details):
The sun rising at 4:30 AM and setting at 9:30 PM.
The dogs running around politely leashless next to their owners.
The $3 high quality cups of coffees.
The public transportation speakers announcing the stop “I.P. Pavlova”.
The Thai red curry and pad thai at the restaurant below our apartment (shoutout to Madame Lyn Restaurant).
The zig zagged walk from my apartment to the CEA CAPA center.
The feeling of coming back “home” after a weekend away in a different country.
I want to leave you guys with a couple recommendations I have for anyone who is looking into studying abroad in Prague or just traveling here. Feel free to reach out for a more extensive list!
Restaurants:
Venue (brunch)
Sweet and Pepper Days (brunch)
Pod Vysehradem (Czech)
U Tri Jelinku (Czech)
Bricks (Italian)
Trattoria Cicala (Italian)
Madame Lyn (Thai/Vietnamese)
Hanoi Square Restaurant (Vietnamese)
Masala Vodickova (Indian)
Big Smokers (barbecue)
Manifesto Market (food market)
Angelato Ujezd (gelato)
Cafe Du (great study spot)
Going out:
Karlovy Lazne, Epic, Duplex (three biggest clubs here)
Riegrovy Sady, Zahradni Letensky (beer gardens)
Dog Bar!!!!
Anonymous Shrinks Office (speakeasy vibe)
I’m feeling so bittersweet leaving my summer home, but every good thing must always come to an end. Prague and this entire experience will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you guys for following my study abroad journey and travel adventures!! I have loved being able to document my weeks in Europe. My last and final blog will be up next week covering a reflection of my study abroad experience and a recap of my time in Paris, London, and Genoa!

Hold Fast To Your Dreams Like Migratory Birds—My 6 ‘Second Homes’ Are Visas To Experience 6 City Lands: Will You Follow Me?
We need a place where we can escape for relaxation. Life is short and the world is big. One-week vacations are too short. By the time you relax enough not to worry about work, the week is up. I long to stay idly in a loved city for months. Ideally, it will be a kind of my second home, but it will not be my real home—my home is Hong Kong. I want a third home, fourth home, fifth home…I always fancy a home wherever I have been to. Sadly, eyes are bigger than my pockets.
In a foreign city, there is always something new to discover. One can wander in the streets without a plan. I enjoy getting lost in the city because I love the anxiety of feeling safely helpless. When I have breakfast at a cozy café, buy some untried snacks in a supermarket, visit an endearing museum and read amazing books in a bookstore, I feel like making a movie in a strange place about myself, the lost me—by myself.
Merciless years have done harshly to me. I will face the reality of getting old. Youth was wasted on the money-making chores. Today, I can be myself; and unreservedly do the things that I want to do. I want to fly, like migratory birds that will fly hundreds and thousands of miles to find the best ecological conditions. A person needs just 3 things to be truly happy in this world: some places to love, some places to do and some places to remember.
If I can afford, I desire 6 ‘breakaway city retreats’ every year, each one ideally for one to two months. A married couple told me, “We planned to have a breakaway stay in London for one year after our retirement. It ends up that we stayed there for two years—still not feeling enough.”
The 6 cities that I dream to stay are Tokyo, Qingdao, Vancouver, Bangkok, Taipei and Paris. It may be just a dream but we must have a dream before our dream can come true.
Paris has a rich human history, being over 2,000 years old. Her cobblestone lanes, grand boulevards and charming cafes all provide a honeyed experience for me. Her glamorous fashion scene, apart from arts and culture, is the most enduring appeal of this ancient city of the world.
Taipei is a city of culture. Culture makes the people polite and peaceful. There, bookstores, coffee shops and ‘creative parks’ are common. In Taipei, slow living is the popular motto of taking life at a slower pace and savoring the quiet moments that make up our good life. If you feel bogged down by everyday stressors in Hong Kong, do fly for about an hour to Taipei for a retreat full of spiritual contentment.
I kiss Bangkok for her vibrant activities, delicious street food, bustling nightlife, world famous open-air markets and relaxing Thai massage. The welcoming and colourful atmosphere of this religious city is too hard to resist. The extreme opposite of her disorderliness is the majestic faith of people in Buddhism. Sawadee Krub!
Vancouver has a spectacular backdrop—the snowcapped Rocky Mountains. She always ranks as one of the world’s most livable cities. I delight in the city’s stunning natural scenery, surrounded by mountains, forests and the blue Pacific Ocean, making her the very very picturesque international city. We can do hiking in the mountains, kayaking in the ocean and strolling in the treeful parks scattered throughout the city. After a day of fun and happiness, one can escape to the biggest ‘China Town’ Richmond in the world for scrumptious food. No wonder why Richmond is called the ‘Little Hong Kong’. I got an apartment near Richmond Centre.
Qingdao, near Korea, in China (青島) is a seaport, naval base, and a business centre. The city is a showcase of very traditional and extremely modern Chinese architectures. She has one of the most beautiful coastlines in the country. The local cuisine, between the northern cooking and southern food of China, is marvellous. The city is famous for her tasty seafood and internationally renowned Tsingtao Beer. Beer has been an impressive heritage of Qingdao because of the German influence. She was leased to Germany as a colony in 1898. Japanese started to occupy Qingdao in 1914. The city, full of old German and Japanese buildings, was returned to China in 1922. Traces of the German and Japanese colonial periods can be found everywhere. This explains why the city has many huge Sakura (櫻花) parks. My heart belongs to this romantic city. If you are hungry for a dramatic and contrasting mood, this is what Qingdao is all about. The place offers the Orient and the West; as well as the old and the new. I also miss people-watching there because her people are mostly tall, well-dressed and have fair skin with a velvety and smooth texture. Quite a number of movie stars are from Qingdao.
Oh, Tokyo, my Tokyo! Tokyo means diversity and velocity. She offers an unlimited choice of shopping, entertainment, culture and dinning to her visitors. The city’s old history can be appreciated in traditional districts such as Asakusa (淺草) through her archaic temples, wooden houses and gardens. There are ultra-modern malls, hotels and theatres in trendy districts such as Shibuya (澀谷) which are right next to the olden areas. Tokyo is a magnet for changes and there are more changes taking place in the city than anywhere in the world. Things in Tokyo around me evolve so fast that she always makes my head spin. Staying in Tokyo is surely a kaleidoscopic experience.
Life is short and at my age, I am learning to enjoy it to the fullest. One way is ‘work hard, play hard’. The other way is to travel more so that I can see modestly what a tiny place that I occupy in the world. This is why I wish to short-stay in more places like the 6 cities that I have alluded to. “Unfinished business is like an open wound that never heals.” My life is usually a long succession of busy nothings. I long for solitude, the kind of quietness in a foreign city, which can open myself for a deeper intimacy with myself.
