Thursday, June 13th, 2024: First Day Walking Tour
Thursday, June 13th: Walking Tour in London
We landed in London around 6:30am and made our way to the tube. Although the public transportation system is chaotic, it is extremely useful. The tube, the buses, and even Uber boats can get you anywhere in the city for a good price.
The day consisted of seeing our nearby neighborhoods. There is an incredible amount of culture and activities in every corner of the city. Throughout the day we saw Chinatown, Soho, Seven Dials, Leicester Square and multiple other neighborhoods.
In each part of the city, there are different cultures to experience. The food specifically was much more diverse than I expected. In Chinatown, of course, there were Japanese, Chinese, Thai, and other southeast Asian restaurants. In Seven Dials, there was Greek, British, Italian, and Indian food. Every street seemed to have a restaurant that had vegan or vegetarian options. London is clearly the melting pot of England.
There is art with every square inch of the city. Whether it be street art, museums, or beautiful architecture, there is something very visually pleasing about the city. It is such a stark contrast from being in the US. Seeing a Five Guys in a chapel-like building feels so ironic yet fitting. With England being so historical, they have so many spots where it is perfect to have average businesses in the most beautiful building.
So far this trip is eventful and educational. I’m very excited to see how the rest of the week goes and what else I can learn from this city!

9 people I would like to get to know better
Tagged by @colourme-feral at this post here. Thanks dear friend! 🥰 Because of your post you got me Googling packing cubes as well, but my fallback has always been resealable (and reusable, so not single-use) plastic bags for socks and underwear when packing. 👍
last song: I've been listening to two lately, back and forth. One is ஒரு தெய்வம் தந்த பூவே/Oru Deivam Thantha Poove (O Flower Gifted from a God), a hauntingly beautiful ode sung in the voice of an adoptive mother to her adopted child, recommended to me by dear friend @neuroticbookworm. It's a precious gift, and I need to read the translated lyrics to fully grasp how the melody amplifies the meaning, but each time I listen to this it brings a little tear to my eye.
youtube
The second is uplifting in a different way – เธอหมุนรอบฉัน ฉันหมุนรอบเธอ (You Revolve Around Me, I Revolve Around You) by Scrubb, introduced to me by dear @recentadultburnout. It's a jaunty, retro-style Thai song that was also in the 2gether soundtrack and is an instant serotonin booster.
youtube
favorite color: Deepest blue.
last movie/tv show: Ack. Does Wheel of Fortune count? I also watched an old episode of Nigella Express on YouTube, so let's go with that:
youtube
I love the sound of Nigella's voice and her breezy approach while demonstrating eminently doable recipes. But I was actually using this episode to hone my location-tracking skills... Nigella and her daughter Mimi can be seen stopping by a bakery on the way to her daughter's school at timestamp 4.50 – there are enough visual clues in there to track down the location of the bakery (Boulangerie Poilâne at Elizabeth Street in London) and also Mimi's school (Francis Holland School for Girls at Graham Terrace). Purely an intellectual exercise, and quell the alarms please – the episode is from 2007 and Mimi has long since grown up and graduated, so there's no privacy risk. (Both the school and the bakery in 2023 are still at the same locations they were in 2007, though Poilâne – I love the one in Paris – has had a paint job and looks quite a bit different today).
sweet/spicy/savory: Sweet wins out (confirmed chocoholic that I am), but I also LOVE my spicy prik kee noo, and every meal must also be protein-heavy, so savory gets a shout-out too. (As you can probably tell I find it hard to make decisions, especially around food. 😂)
relationship status: Attached, and have been for a very long time.
current obsession: Fruitcake! A post for a three-ingredient fruitcake popped up on my YouTube feed, and because we're heading into the Yuletide season I became obsessed with making fruitcake in time for Christmas. I've been churning out variations ever since the first one fell a little bit short of expectations, and because of my tweaks it's more like eight ingredients now, so… not quite the time and labor saving hack I envisioned. But it's a delicious obsession nonetheless, plus I get to eat lots of fruitcake along the way.
last thing I googled: Fruitcake recipes! Especially for ideas on how to reduce FODMAPs.
No pressure tags: @pandasmagorica, @bengiyo, @solitaryandwandering, @shinybiancachu, @sillybiscuitshepherdskeleton, @respectthepetty, @teaofdesaster, @lurkingteapot, @sunshinechay.
Only listed nine because those are the rules of this game (literally in the header) but if I haven't tagged you dear friends, please know that I wanted to and if you would like to play please do. Always fun to get to know people better here! 💖

WEEK 8: LAST HURRAH
Hi everyone! If this is your first time coming across my blog, my name is Jules, and I’ve been studying abroad in Prague for 8 weeks now. I can’t believe I’m sitting here documenting my final week in this amazing city. This international experience has truly been one of the best decisions I have ever made and has gifted me with one unforgettable summer. Now let me jump into a quick recap of my week. (Side note: sorry this blog post is delayed; I will get into the treacherous reason why in my next blog.)
After coming home from Amsterdam, I immediately locked in to study for my Linear Algebra final. It ended up going super smoothly, and I am very satisfied with my overall grade and performance in this course. All the math classes in my program collectively took a field trip to Prague’s Technical Museum on Tuesday. It was interesting to see the impact of engineering on this country’s technology and industry through the development of automobiles, aircrafts, bicycles, and ships. I am so grateful to have taken this course in such a dynamic environment with equally amazing professors and classmates!
Before leaving our host country, my friends and I had to squeeze in our last family dinners. On Tuesday night, a huge group of us grabbed dinner at a traditional Czech restaurant that was actually recommended to us by Petra (our professor from Art & Architecture in the Golden City), which I thought was a very fitting last meal. One of the things that I loved most about this study abroad experience was the friendships I have built. Thinking about going back to school and seeing them around campus makes me so excited. The following night on Wednesday, my apartment had our last dinner together at a pizza restaurant right down the street. I’m going to miss living with them so much!! And after dinner, we of course had to end things off the Prague way by going out together one last time. Shoutout to my absolute favorite, Dog Bar, for giving me and my friends some of the most unforgettable nights here.
Last dinners. && Final group pics.
On Thursday night after a full day of packing up, my mom and my sister arrived!! I spent the next few days showing them around my beautiful host country and giving them a taste of my life here for the past 8 weeks. Now, we’re headed to Paris, London, and Genoa to end off my unbelievably long summer traveling and living from suitcase to suitcase!!
Fam's arrival! && Last views of Prague.
To reminisce a little, here are some top things I’m going to miss about Prague (the little details):
The sun rising at 4:30 AM and setting at 9:30 PM.
The dogs running around politely leashless next to their owners.
The $3 high quality cups of coffees.
The public transportation speakers announcing the stop “I.P. Pavlova”.
The Thai red curry and pad thai at the restaurant below our apartment (shoutout to Madame Lyn Restaurant).
The zig zagged walk from my apartment to the CEA CAPA center.
The feeling of coming back “home” after a weekend away in a different country.
I want to leave you guys with a couple recommendations I have for anyone who is looking into studying abroad in Prague or just traveling here. Feel free to reach out for a more extensive list!
Restaurants:
Venue (brunch)
Sweet and Pepper Days (brunch)
Pod Vysehradem (Czech)
U Tri Jelinku (Czech)
Bricks (Italian)
Trattoria Cicala (Italian)
Madame Lyn (Thai/Vietnamese)
Hanoi Square Restaurant (Vietnamese)
Masala Vodickova (Indian)
Big Smokers (barbecue)
Manifesto Market (food market)
Angelato Ujezd (gelato)
Cafe Du (great study spot)
Going out:
Karlovy Lazne, Epic, Duplex (three biggest clubs here)
Riegrovy Sady, Zahradni Letensky (beer gardens)
Dog Bar!!!!
Anonymous Shrinks Office (speakeasy vibe)
I’m feeling so bittersweet leaving my summer home, but every good thing must always come to an end. Prague and this entire experience will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you guys for following my study abroad journey and travel adventures!! I have loved being able to document my weeks in Europe. My last and final blog will be up next week covering a reflection of my study abroad experience and a recap of my time in Paris, London, and Genoa!

Hold Fast To Your Dreams Like Migratory Birds—My 6 ‘Second Homes’ Are Visas To Experience 6 City Lands: Will You Follow Me?
We need a place where we can escape for relaxation. Life is short and the world is big. One-week vacations are too short. By the time you relax enough not to worry about work, the week is up. I long to stay idly in a loved city for months. Ideally, it will be a kind of my second home, but it will not be my real home—my home is Hong Kong. I want a third home, fourth home, fifth home…I always fancy a home wherever I have been to. Sadly, eyes are bigger than my pockets.
In a foreign city, there is always something new to discover. One can wander in the streets without a plan. I enjoy getting lost in the city because I love the anxiety of feeling safely helpless. When I have breakfast at a cozy café, buy some untried snacks in a supermarket, visit an endearing museum and read amazing books in a bookstore, I feel like making a movie in a strange place about myself, the lost me—by myself.
Merciless years have done harshly to me. I will face the reality of getting old. Youth was wasted on the money-making chores. Today, I can be myself; and unreservedly do the things that I want to do. I want to fly, like migratory birds that will fly hundreds and thousands of miles to find the best ecological conditions. A person needs just 3 things to be truly happy in this world: some places to love, some places to do and some places to remember.
If I can afford, I desire 6 ‘breakaway city retreats’ every year, each one ideally for one to two months. A married couple told me, “We planned to have a breakaway stay in London for one year after our retirement. It ends up that we stayed there for two years—still not feeling enough.”
The 6 cities that I dream to stay are Tokyo, Qingdao, Vancouver, Bangkok, Taipei and Paris. It may be just a dream but we must have a dream before our dream can come true.
Paris has a rich human history, being over 2,000 years old. Her cobblestone lanes, grand boulevards and charming cafes all provide a honeyed experience for me. Her glamorous fashion scene, apart from arts and culture, is the most enduring appeal of this ancient city of the world.
Taipei is a city of culture. Culture makes the people polite and peaceful. There, bookstores, coffee shops and ‘creative parks’ are common. In Taipei, slow living is the popular motto of taking life at a slower pace and savoring the quiet moments that make up our good life. If you feel bogged down by everyday stressors in Hong Kong, do fly for about an hour to Taipei for a retreat full of spiritual contentment.
I kiss Bangkok for her vibrant activities, delicious street food, bustling nightlife, world famous open-air markets and relaxing Thai massage. The welcoming and colourful atmosphere of this religious city is too hard to resist. The extreme opposite of her disorderliness is the majestic faith of people in Buddhism. Sawadee Krub!
Vancouver has a spectacular backdrop—the snowcapped Rocky Mountains. She always ranks as one of the world’s most livable cities. I delight in the city’s stunning natural scenery, surrounded by mountains, forests and the blue Pacific Ocean, making her the very very picturesque international city. We can do hiking in the mountains, kayaking in the ocean and strolling in the treeful parks scattered throughout the city. After a day of fun and happiness, one can escape to the biggest ‘China Town’ Richmond in the world for scrumptious food. No wonder why Richmond is called the ‘Little Hong Kong’. I got an apartment near Richmond Centre.
Qingdao, near Korea, in China (青島) is a seaport, naval base, and a business centre. The city is a showcase of very traditional and extremely modern Chinese architectures. She has one of the most beautiful coastlines in the country. The local cuisine, between the northern cooking and southern food of China, is marvellous. The city is famous for her tasty seafood and internationally renowned Tsingtao Beer. Beer has been an impressive heritage of Qingdao because of the German influence. She was leased to Germany as a colony in 1898. Japanese started to occupy Qingdao in 1914. The city, full of old German and Japanese buildings, was returned to China in 1922. Traces of the German and Japanese colonial periods can be found everywhere. This explains why the city has many huge Sakura (櫻花) parks. My heart belongs to this romantic city. If you are hungry for a dramatic and contrasting mood, this is what Qingdao is all about. The place offers the Orient and the West; as well as the old and the new. I also miss people-watching there because her people are mostly tall, well-dressed and have fair skin with a velvety and smooth texture. Quite a number of movie stars are from Qingdao.
Oh, Tokyo, my Tokyo! Tokyo means diversity and velocity. She offers an unlimited choice of shopping, entertainment, culture and dinning to her visitors. The city’s old history can be appreciated in traditional districts such as Asakusa (淺草) through her archaic temples, wooden houses and gardens. There are ultra-modern malls, hotels and theatres in trendy districts such as Shibuya (澀谷) which are right next to the olden areas. Tokyo is a magnet for changes and there are more changes taking place in the city than anywhere in the world. Things in Tokyo around me evolve so fast that she always makes my head spin. Staying in Tokyo is surely a kaleidoscopic experience.
Life is short and at my age, I am learning to enjoy it to the fullest. One way is ‘work hard, play hard’. The other way is to travel more so that I can see modestly what a tiny place that I occupy in the world. This is why I wish to short-stay in more places like the 6 cities that I have alluded to. “Unfinished business is like an open wound that never heals.” My life is usually a long succession of busy nothings. I long for solitude, the kind of quietness in a foreign city, which can open myself for a deeper intimacy with myself.

August 20th, 2023
Day 5: Sundays are for Flowers, World Cup Finals, and Cool London Things
Started off the morning by joining Minh, Vi, and Minh's Friend Janae (sp?) at the Columbia Street Flower Market in East London. A really colorful, vibrant place with lots of Sunday morning energy! A tons of cool street photo ops!
The flower market was followed by the FIFA Women's World Cup Final: England vs. Spain. We watched the early part of the match through a bar window and eventually meandered our way to Old George Brewery in Bethnal Green where we found comfortable spots to stand in and watch the entirety of the game. An entertaining match that ultimately left the English fans all around us disappointed in the end. 1-0 Spain.
Enjoyed an Asian lunch at Mum Likes Thai Food in Bethnal Green.
Trained back to the touristy and central part of town where we wandered through Borough Market and across London Bridge a couple of times.
Finally found St. Dunstan in the East, the church ruin that we were looking for a few days prior. It was a neat little scene to see. Great for photos.
Stopped by and hung out at The Alchemist, a creative cocktail bar with really cool drinks that, when made, look like cool science experiments! With the use of lots of dry ice and science-y lab equipment.
Once Vi and Janae peeled off, Cynthia, Minh, and I walked around the Tower Bridge area again for funsies before meeting Vi in Putney Bridge for dinner. The original idea was to find English pies for dinner but the restaurant we found in Putney Bridge for pies was closed by the time we got there. Instead, we opted for delicious Lebanese food at Bosa Lounge (located right next door to that other restaurant) instead to end the night. Really yummy!
5 Things I Learned/Observed Today:
Women's soccer has some supporters but it's nothing like the support the men get here in London.
Bank Station's exit from the underground train is slightly odd. And a little unlike the other stations. So don’t get caught going... not out.
In London, don't expect to be served at a restaurant if you're cutting it close and arriving within 30-60 minutes of closing time. It's not like in America where they will seat you even if they close in 10 minutes.
Instead of buying London's Oyster Card for certain unlimited periods of train and bus fares, if you just tap your credit card every time you enter or exit the public transportation system, you'll eventually be charged a cumulative charge at the end of the day after all the charges are processed for each individual ride. But this end-of-day charge is capped at some amount. So, if you're going to a ton of different places and riding public transportation to get to those places, in all likelihood, you'll get the bang for your buck since you'll cap out at some point early on and likely be able to ride the public trans a ton without additional charges as the day goes on. Not sure what the point of an Oyster Card is then... Maybe it's antiquated.
Supposedly, in London, people are really into flowers and are really friendly to dogs. People are always finding opportunities to buy flowers that are cheaper than their floral counterparts in the U.S. And restaurants and other places are really kind and welcoming of dogs, always bringing water or treats out for them.

Travel Advice, Itineraries, And Information For Thailand (2023) || SofiaHotelHuahin
Here, you'll find the top Thailand vacation packages and advice. All of our top Thailand travel advice, tales, and experiences are collected in our blog and travel guide. Not just for families, but also for singles and couples, you'll find trip suggestions here.
You chose Thailand as the next vacation spot to cover after we already covered Sri Lanka, India, and London tourism. Every year, we return to Thailand to offer new advice, itineraries, essentials, locations, spending suggestions, and reviews of lodging. Thailand is a fantastic location for extended stays, budget trips, or quick getaways. Thailand is our top pick for first-timers who want to travel to Asia.
Don't miss out on our comprehensive Thailand Hotel travel guide, which provides all the advice and details you require before traveling there.
Thailand's travel patterns.
We have visited Thailand more than 20 times, alone, with a partner, and now with children. The kids have visited Thailand at least 20 times, the first time being when they were 4 and 6 years old. We have independently explored the entire nation as long-term backpackers, done more compact upscale vacations, and I have been there on a small-group adventure vacation.
The majority of travel methods are effective in Thailand, regardless of style or affordability. The best tourism destination in Asia is undoubtedly Thailand, which is also the most accessible. We frequently visit since it is one of our favorite nations, not the least of which is to update this professional Thailand travel guide.
Your travel style will obviously influence the costs. It entirely depends on you and where in Thailand you are whether you can live well on less than $50 per day or on much more. A strict minimal standard would be:
The guest house has four beds, good standards, and a price of $26 for a family of four.
a meal, such as pad Thai, that costs between 40 and 50 Baht, or less than $2, when eaten at a table.
Over 30 Baht for lunch at a stall on the street. Of course, expenses increase over time, but if you use common sense and know where to go, you should be able to maintain these low costs in Thailand.
Thailand vacations for families
Thailand is typically very easy to travel with children because it is a well-known holiday destination and because a large portion of the country is contemporary and developed. The Thai people genuinely enjoy children, and whenever we've arrived for dinner, we've had them whisked away to be amused by devoted young women.
Food is nice, transportation is simple (though roads can be hazardous), and hygienic standards have greatly improved since 20 years ago. This Thailand travel blog has been in the works for a very long time! There is a tonne to see and do and plenty of lodging available at various price points (see below).
In some areas of Thailand, renting a car is now a smart alternative; it's great for families. Despite the risks—such as traffic, dogs, monkies, and spiky coral—we always found Thailand to be an easy and secure destination; otherwise, we wouldn't keep returning. Thailand with Kids, No Worries! is a book we wrote. If you're worried about taking the first steps in a family vacation in Asia.

Phad Thai with Prawns
Phad Thai with prawns cooked by chef Sanguan Parr #thefoodplaybook #phadthai #prawns #thai #food #foodporn #london #uk #restaurant #hospitality #experience #trip #life #enjoy #tasty #healthy #homemade #travel #trsocialtv #chef #academy #education #training #apprenticeship #learning (www.trsocial.co.uk)
INTRO
Phad Thai is a stir-fried rice noodle dish commonly served as street food and at most restaurants in Thailand as part of the country's cuisine. It is typically made with rice noodles, chicken, beef or tofu, peanuts, a scrambled egg, and bean sprouts, among other vegetables. (Wikipedia)
INGREDIENTS
LET'S COOK
STEP 1 Prepare the Tamarind Thai Sauce (watch recipe and the video accessible from here below) STEP 2 Prepare the Phad Thai sauce adding the sugar, fish sauce, oyster sauce, vinegar, and paprika into the Tamarind Thai sauce and mixing well STEP 3 Soak the dry noodles in lukewarm or room temperature water while preparing the other ingredients (the noodles should be flexible but not mushy) STEP 4 Cut the tofu into a one-inch long matchstick. You can fry the tofu separately until golden brown and hard or you can fry with other ingredients below STEP 5 Cut the spring onions into one inch long pieces. Set aside a few fresh spring onions for a garnish STEP 6 Rinse the bean sprouts with cold water. Divide them into 3 parts (half to cook with the noodles, ¼ to cook at the end, and ¼ to add fresh as garnish) STEP 7 Prepare the shallots cutting into small pieces (brunoise cut) STEP 8 Place the wok to eat up with a high flame and add the oil STEP 9 Add shallot, prawns, preserved Chinese radish, dried shrimps, tofu and stir them until they start to brown STEP 10 The noodles should be flexible but not expanded at this point. Blanch the noodles in boiling water for a few seconds STEP 11 Add the noodles and the bean sprouts to the wok and stir quickly to keep things from sticking STEP 12 Add the Phad Thai Sauce (the heat should remain high, as you will see a lot of juice in the wok at this point) STEP 13 Make room for the egg by pushing all noodles to the side of the wok. Crack the egg onto the wok and scramble it until it is almost all cooked STEP 14 Fold the egg into the noodles (The noodles should soft and chewy) STEP 15 Taste that the flavor is right balanced between sourness and sweetness. If not add soy sauce or sugar accordingly STEP 16 Then the flavor is right to add the spring onions and the bean sprouts, then mix all the ingredient together for a minute (adjust adding water or stock if is too dry) STEP 18 The noodles should be soft, dry, and very tangled. Pour onto the serving plate and sprinkle peanuts. Serve a wedge of lime on the side, raw onion, and raw bean sprouts on top STEP 19 Traditionally in Thailand, condiments such as sugar, fish sauce, vinegar, chilli flakes, extra bean sprouts, and peanuts are available on the side.
