The Pandemic Is Pushing QR Code Menus Into the Mainstream
Tumblr media
Cozy Royale’s QR code is on a flag held by a turtle | Clay Williams/Eater
From the Editor: Everything you missed in food news last week
This post originally appeared on October 24, 2020 in Amanda Kludt’s newsletter “From the Editor,” a roundup of the most vital news and stories in the food world each week. Read the archives and subscribe now.
Earlier this month, I went to dinner with my family at the (wonderful) new Williamsburg restaurant Cozy Royale. The kids got paper menus and crayons. The adults scanned the QR code on the table to find the full menu and drinks list. At another Brooklyn restaurant Lalou a few weeks ago, I scanned the QR code to find the menu and also the health screening form, where they collected my email in case they needed it later for contact tracing. At Thai Diner one recent Saturday night, I used the QR code to access the menu, order my items, and pay, significantly cutting down the contact with a server, who just brought water and food when it was ready.
There are a lot of obvious upsides to relying on QR codes during this pandemic. Fewer items to touch and wash, less contact with servers, and more and easier ways to obtain important health and contact info from diners. But there are also very real advantages to keeping QR code menus well past the COVID-19 outbreak.
Chef Jonah Miller wrote a great piece about this for the Counter the other week and raised some points I hadn’t considered before. Most obvious is the great environmental waste of printing out so many menus. But he also argued the paper menu can inhibit creativity. As a chef he often thinks twice before changing a menu item because he doesn’t want to reprint the menu. Paper menus also prove problematic when items run out. Servers have to begin an interaction with a guest by telling them what the restaurant doesn’t serve. With digital menus, they can make the change on the spot.
I think this is going to be one of those pandemic-era pushes that may change how we interact with menus for the long haul. It won’t be for everyone (especially at the high end) but I imagine some restaurants will never go back to paper.
To hear more about QR codes, listen to my co-host Daniel and I talk to restaurateur Wilson Tang about them (and also the shifting dynamic between restaurant owners and customers) this week on our Eater’s Digest podcast.

Haere mai, statistical computing folks.
Later this year, Auckland is hosting the Asian regional meeting of the International Association for Statistical Computing.  For the benefit of conference-goers, here’s a brief introduction to the locale.
Nomenclature:
The Owen G. Glenn Building (OGGB, or building 260, in university abbreviations) is named after Owen G. Glenn. He’s a New Zealand businessman and philanthropist.
Auckland is named after George Eden.  The subantarctic Auckland Islands were not named after George but after his father William Eden.
New Zealand is named after the Dutch province of Zeeland; the lack of resemblance is quite striking.
Formally,(Actually It’s more complicated) the country is Aotearoa New Zealand, with Māori and English names of equal status. The city has a Māori name, Tāmaki Makaurau, but its primary name is the English one.
The Māori language (te reo Māori) is fairly easy to pronounce roughly right. The consonants are the same as in Western European languages (or pinyin), except that ‘wh’ is pronounced /f/. The vowels are pure, as in Spanish or German or Italian. The bars above vowels mean they are about twice as long. There isn’t strong stress on any syllable.
People over 30 who grew up in a place with a Māori name may well use an older, anglicised pronounciation for it, but there’s been a trend away from that. In particular, weather forecasts and airport announcements will typically use something relatively close to the Māori pronounciation.
Mountains
Auckland is full of little pointy hills that look like baby volcanoes. They are baby volcanoes. One of them, Maungawhau/Mt Eden is data(volcano) in R. Every few thousand years, a new one pops up at some unpredictable location in the Auckland area, erupts briefly, and then stops. There’s only a few of these volcano fields around the world — another is the (extinct) Boring Volcano Field in Portland, Oregon. The Auckland one is still active and so is less boring.
The most recent and largest volcano, Rangitoto, is just outside the Waitemata Harbour. There are ferry rides a few times a day, and it’s a nice walk to the top. Parts of Rangitoto are still bare rock, parts are pohutukawa forest, and there’s some areas on the south side that have developed proper soil and a variety of plants.
Auckland Domain, just across the motorway from the conference, is the crater of the closest volcano; Mt Eden is a short bus ride away.
Peoples
New Zealand was the last worthwhile land mass to be settled — about 800 years ago, by Polynesians in big ocean-going canoes. You occasionally see people raising alt-theories of earlier settlement by, eg, Celts, but there’s scientific consensus and fairly wide social endorsement for the view that these people are probably racist whackjobs.
The British arrived in increasing numbers in the early nineteenth century, with the usual consequences — though the Treaty of Waitangi was somewhat more successful than most attempts to negotiate with the British. Recently, the NZ government has settled treaty claims with many iwi (tribes, clans).
At the start of the twentieth century, about one in four residents of New Zealand was an immigrant. The proportion decreased to a minimum of about one in six in the 1940s and has been slowly increasing again. What’s different this time is where the immigrants are from: many are from the Pacific Islands and from Asia.  Auckland, in particular, has about 40%  immigrant proportion,  similar to New York and London. The increase in diversity has gone reasonably well by international standards, but there are certainly some people who aren’t happy with things being different from fifty years ago.
Plants
The trees with dense, gray-green leaves are pohutukawa. Some of them might be flowering by the time of the conference.  Stylised versions of the red spiky puffs of flowers are starting to displace winter-based symbols for Christmas in Auckland. You’ll probably hear people worrying about myrtle rust, a South American fungus that has recently arrived; no-one knows how much damage it will do.
Many of the conifers you see are native: rīmu, tōtara, kauri, kahikatea (native plants are typically known by their Māori names). The things like enormous fake Christmas trees are Araucarias; not native but regional — A. heterophylla, ‘Norfolk Pine’ from Norfolk Island and A. columnaris, ‘Cook Pine’, from New Caledonia.  There are also two conifers from the Monterey area of California: “radiata” (Pinus radiata) and “macrocarpa” (Cupressus macrocarpa). They grow much more vigorously here.
The Dr Seuss trees looking like bunches of grass on top of tall trunks are Cabbage Trees (Cordyline australis). The name comes from the edibility of the new stem and the roots, rather than their appearance.
Tree ferns are native; the Waitakere hills to the west of Auckland are packed full of them. They’re culturally important: the major women’s professional sports teams are named after them, and the unfolding fern frond (the ‘koru’) is a widely-used symbol of growth.
Kauri are massively huge living-fossil conifers that used to be common in Auckland and points north. Sadly, a lot of the nearby ones were turned into houses, and they grow slowly. Some of the ones on the west side of Northland (day-trip distance) are almost as big as redwoods (Sequoiadendron).
New Zealand Flax is known and loved and/or hated by gardeners around the warm temperate world. It was a traditional fibre source, and the nectar was used as a sweetener.  It’s not related to the `true’ flax of the northern hemisphere; it’s a lily.
Birds
New Zealand is famous for its weird native birds. The ones you see around you in Auckland mostly aren’t them.  You can easily see a lot of stupidly-introduced English birds: sparrow, starling, pigeon, blackbird, thrush, chaffinch, goldfinch. The cute urban parrots are Australian, as are the magpies and the tiny green silvereyes. The leggy blue and black pūkeko are ‘courtesy natives’ — they arrived before Europeans but after Māori — but they are the same species as the ones all over Europe and Asia. The large black gulls actually are a native species, but the differences would only matter to another gull.
You might, in the parks near the University, see the kererū, the big native pigeon. It’s about twice the size of the feral pigeons, and colored purple, green, and white.  There’s a few fantails (pīwakawaka) around, which are very cute.
There’s one common, distinctive, native bird. If you walk past a tree that sounds as if it’s full of old 28k dial-up modems, you have met the tūī. They’re about the size of a blackbird, with a puff of white feathers at the throat, and they’re boisterous, musical, and give the impression of being slightly drunk.
If you want to see more native birds, the day trip to Tiritiri Maitangi Island is highly recommended. You still won’t see kiwi (they are brown, shy, and nocturnal, so are essentially unobservable) but you will likely see saddlebacks and kākāriki and black robins and hihi and bellbirds and kēreru and maybe kōkako and takahē.
Death Rays from Space (update)
Auckland has a relatively mild climate, since it’s surrounded by water, but we’re the same distance from the equator as Las Vegas or the Greek islands.  There’s also less continental dust in the atmosphere here than a lot of places. It is surprisingly easy to get badly sunburned.
Foods
The best-value inexpensive food in central Auckland is in Asian restaurants, and particularly in Asian food courts. Non-foodcourt examples especially worth mentioning are Selera (Malaysian, in Newmarket) and Chom Na (Thai, downtown). Another inexpensive option is fish and chips, which is as good here as anywhere in the world: it’s worth paying extra for snapper if it’s fresh. A lot of pubs also have reasonable food.
The best Indian food is in Sandringham, about 6km south, but there are some good places at the top of the hill, along K Rd (Satya, in particular)
Mexican food is not recommended: it tends to be either bad or expensive. Pizza mostly isn’t great (with a few exceptions). Otherwise, any restaurant that can survive in Auckland is unlikely to be terrible.
At the higher priced end of the market, there are a number of good restaurants on Fort St. Ima does family-style Israeli food very well. Indochine Kitchen is Vietnamese, a bit noisy but good flavours.  Beirut is posh Lebanese. Cassia is modern Indian food and was the Restaurant of the Year last year. There are lots of well-regarded places in Ponsonby that I don’t know much about.
At the top: for high-end French-style food, The Grove is really excellent; I’ve heard good things about The French Café, but have never been there; Grand Harbour does Hong Kong-style seafood and is by acclaim the best Chinese restaurant in the country, but I’m not really qualified to judge whether it’s worth it. The revolving restaurant on the SkyTower is expensive because it revolves; unlike some revolving restaurants it does actually have good food.
Finally, Giapo, on Fort St, does absolutely over-the-top decorated locavore gelato. You have never seen anything like it.

Florida to Texas
A couple months ago me and a friend I’ve known since school decided to take a road trip across America. Unlike most Brits though, we wanted to try somewhere a little different, so instead of your typical destinations like New York, Las Vegas and California, we chose the deep south - Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas. So just like that, a month and a half after coming up with the idea, we were on our way to the good ole US of A.
Our first stop was Miami, a place we both really wanted to visit. One of the first things you notice about Miami when you get off the plane, is how much Spanish influence there is. Every sign has a Spanish translation underneath, and half the people you hear talking are speaking Spanish. Being Hispanophiles ourselves, we felt right at home. The city itself looked amazing, with beautiful Art Deco style buildings everywhere and a beach that stretched for miles.
Tumblr media
We spent the first morning in Miami having a Cuban coffee at a local breakfast joint. From the outside the place looked like a dump, with horrible green looking photos advertising what food they had out the front. However, after closer inspection, we went inside and were pleasantly surprised to find something that looked like it was straight out of a Martin Scorsese film - old school wooden chairs, grainy photos on the wall, and fresh oranges stacked up high on top of a juicer. The coffee was some of the best we’ve both ever had - strong with a touch of sweetness, poured straight into thick, frothy milk. This may sound like a bit of a funny thing to get excited about, but once you try really great coffee, you really never want to go back.
After a day of sightseeing, we then jumped back in the car and headed down to the bottom of Key West, the most southerly point of the US. This part of America is stunning, with beaches everywhere and cool little bars, restaurants and places to visit. A highlight was having my first bowl of acai - a Brazilian dessert made up of berries, nuts, granola, and all sorts of other sweet things, as well as seeing the sun set at one of the few great national parks you can visit there. The remainder of our time spent in Florida, which I could go into great detail with if I didn’t stop myself, included airboating in the Everglades, exploring the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, kayaking in the Ocala National Forest, and visiting both Panama city - a place devastated by a hurricane and taken over by bikers - and our last stop, Pensacola - an immaculate looking city with the most amazing beaches and a really cool looking downtown.
Tumblr media
After a night of drinking and stepping into one of the blackest looking bars ever - a place that literally looked like it was out of American Gangster - we were back on the road. The first place we hit outside of Florida was a city called Mobile, in Alabama. Clearly built as a predominantly industrial city, this place you could tell had some serious industry, epitomised by the big shipyard you see when you first arrive in the city. Despite not being that attractive on the whole, the place had some really nice doses of Americana if you went down some of the smaller side streets and avenues, as we did. We decided to stop for a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants they had there - a typical American grill type place, as shown above, serving all sorts of southern style dishes. One of the main things you come across when you first eat this kind of food, is what they call ‘biscuit’, which is actually much more like a savoury British scone. Despite the food being pretty tasty, we decided to move on to our next destination.
After briefly passing through Mississippi - our third state in our trip across America - we ended up in New Orleans, Louisiana. Now this place had some serious style. Despite hearing many good things about New Orleans, I really didn’t know much of what to expect from it. You only really fully get the vibe of what is going on in that place when you first start stepping into the main part of the city - people dressing like they’re from the 70′s with bright colours everywhere, bustling streets with palm trees, and a tram system running straight through the middle of it all. The place is fully alive, like an open heart beating away. And the most exciting time to experience all of this is at night on the famous Bourbon street. Part of the French Quarter, Bourbon street has a long history, and is said to be one of the places that Jazz music really developed. After eating the city’s most famous dish, ‘red beans and rice’, we knocked back a few of the city’s most famous drink, the ironically named ‘Hurricane’ - a sweet cocktail made with rum, lemon juice, and passion fruit syrup. After a few of these we were well and truly buzzing. Hopping from bar to bar, and with live music everywhere, we had an amazing time. This was truly a great place to visit.
Tumblr media
Our next stop on our tour across America was the big Lone Star State itself, Texas. Our first call was at the city of Houston. One of the first things you notice when arriving in Texas are the massive oil fields and industry which stretch from miles upon miles. This place has some serious industrial might and is said to have an economy $400 billion bigger than that of Russia ($1.7 trillion in total). The city of Houston reflects this massively, with endless amounts of tall buildings, and restaurants on every corner. The place is not the most beautiful up close, but there are some great little places you can go to. We spent our first night eating at a massive Mexican place called ‘Pappasito’s’ just on the edge of the city, and this place was teeming with life, and the food was great also. However, we had bigger plans in mind. The next day we loaded up the car and headed to where we really wanted to go - the shooting range.
Neither of us had ever shot a gun before, however we were both adamant that this is what we wanted to do; we were in Texas after all. Walking into the place for the first time was surreal; pistols, machine guns, rifles and shotguns, all laid up across the walls as if it were a section of Wallmart - this place was legit. After taking a brief lesson by one of the instructors on how to use a gun, we soon found ourselves on the range with an 8mm pistol. Shooting a gun for the first time is a real experience. It gives you a real adrenaline rush. We both managed a few good shots at a paper target, however, within five minutes or so, it was over. Coming back to the desk of the shooting range, we felt like we still had a little more left in us though, and so after a bit of persuading by both the instructors and ourselves, we decided to give the full automatic machine gun a little pop... Jesus christ... This thing was powerful. Firing a single shot was fine, but once you fully let load on this thing, you really feel the blowback. The shots were a little less clean on this one, however that really didn’t matter. After firing a few rounds on one of these, you truly do feel like a big man!
Tumblr media
So we were in Texas, had just shot a pistol, and a machine gun; what was the next best thing we could do? - get a tattoo of course! Another first for me; I had never had a tattoo done in my life. After mooching down what seemed like the tattoo street of Houston, with about six different ones all lined up close to each other, we settled upon one run by a nice enough Filipino guy. After telling him what I wanted, and my budget, he not only offered to do it for a reasonable price, but to do the more complicated, original version also. This could have gone either of two ways - really bad or really well. After analysing him a little while, I decided that he was most likely one of these guys who liked the challenge of doing a really good tattoo and didn’t care too much about the money. How right was I. I ended up with something I was really happy with - a copy of the original Gadsden flag. This was something I associated with in a big way; a symbol of resistance from the original thirteen colonies of America when Britain tried to take away their rights and freedoms - such as what is happening currently with the British government trying to keep Britain locked into the anti-democratic EU.
Our last stop in Texas, and last of the trip, was at the city of Austin. I can honestly say that this was the best place I’ve ever visited in America. Like New Orleans, it was buzzing with energy, except in a totally different way - food vans everywhere, crazy looking shops and restaurants, people dressed like cowboys; this place was the real deal. After booking ourselves into the illustrious Red Roof Inn Plus, we decided to go further down town and visit ‘Barton Springs’. Despite the pool area being shut off, this place was beautiful; a river leading into a lake with great little trails on either side. People fishing, cycling, and even kayaking - this was a great little spot to use up some energy and spend some time with nature. One of the first things you notice about this place is how many turtles there are everywhere, either swimming around the river or lodged at the bottom of a tree somewhere. After a bit of swimming and sightseeing, we headed back to the ole Red Roof.
Tumblr media
The next day we went right back near the same spot to a food van park. This place had the most amazing food, including Thai, Italian, Mexican, Venezuelan, as well as your traditional American grill and acai bowl place. We both decided on Thai and weren’t disappointed, as we both had the exact same dishes the very next day. We spent that night exploring Austin’s nightlife by going to it’s famous ‘Sixth street’. This place was buzzing in atmosphere, with all sorts of bars and nightclubs to go to. We spent the night playing a game called shuffleboard - a game in which you push a disc across a table as close to the edge as possible - as well as chasing after plenty of girls. Unfortunately, despite getting what we thought was pretty close, we weren’t so lucky - turns out getting four girls from Brooklyn back to your Red Roof Inn Plus ain’t so easy. The next couple days were rather more peaceful, spent chilling and checking out more of Austin’s interesting and vibrant culture before our eventual flight home. It was a great end to what was an amazing trip, and one that I will never forget. God bless you America, god bless you!

The Best U.S. Hiking Trips I Have Ever Been On by Melissa Chen ‘12 (@femalehiker)
Reposted with permission from the Female Hiker
My favorite vacation destinations are usually ones where I can get some hiking in, eat good food, and meet friendly people. There are so many beautiful hikes and outdoor destinations, but some trips have been better than others because of the other factors you don't see in photos. Are the town locals friendly? Is the food tasty? Is it affordable? My favorite hiking trips of all time are not just about the hiking. They are about the experience!
1. A Road Trip to Nevada and Utah's Parks
Tumblr media
My first experience to Utah's National Parks was a 2 week road trip in an RV. We started off in Las Vegas and rented an RV before heading out to Valley of Fire where I made it on local news talking about the government shutdown! After that, we went to Zion National Park where we had secured permits for the epic Subway hike. Our last stop was Bryce Canyon National Park, home of the famous hoodoos.
What made this trip so special was the ease of travel and the uniqueness of the hikes. I've never rented an RV before and once upon a time had some opinions on camping vs. RVing it. But this experience changed my mind about RVs. It was an easy way to keep our schedule flexible, cook healthy meals, and save some money. It was 2 weeks of stress-free vacationing and epic hiking! After the trip, we even enjoyed delicious Thai food at Las Vegas' famous Lotus of Siam restaurant. I enjoyed the trip so much that I'm planning another week in Utah visiting Arches NP, Canyonlands NP, and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.
Must-do's in Utah:
Secure a permit for The Subway in Zion
Wake up for sunrise every day.
2. Solo Trip to Grand Teton
Tumblr media
My first solo hiking trip was to Grand Teton National Park, where I spent several days exploring what the park has to offer. I went on three hikes, drove around looking for wildlife, and ate some delicious meals in the downtown area. What makes the Teton's so special, aside from the fact that the scenery is very similar to Chile's Torres del Paine without being thousands of miles away, is that the National Park is set up for tourists but keeps a lot of the remoteness that we love. When I hiked to Amphitheater Lake, I was the only one for most of my 10 mile hike. I saw more bears than humans that day. But the minute I got back, I sat down for a fancy latte and pastries at Persephone Bakery.
Must-do's in Grand Teton:
Go to Mormon Row at sunrise
Hike the Paintbrush Canyon - Cascade Canyon Loop (counterclockwise)
Stay Bear Aware
3. Exploring Washington State's Central Cascades
Tumblr media
I did a lot of hiking near Seattle last summer, and there were definitely a lot of great areas. But my favorite weekend trip was in the Central Cascades. We rented an adorable A-frame cabin from Airbnb and spent the weekend hiking to Lake Serene and Blanca Lake. What made this trip so great was that it was easily accessible from Seattle and the hiking was beautiful. We spent our first day in the city, getting lunch with friends and seeing some nightlife. Afterwards we rented a car and drove a little less than 2 hours to get to to our A-frame. The A-frame cabin was like nothing I've stayed in before, so I really enjoyed that intimate experience. And of course the hiking was beautiful. Blanca Lake's turquoise waters blew me away, and it's usually something I have to fly 6 hours or more to see.
Must-do's in Washington:
Take a weekday off for the more popular hikes. Weekend crowds ruin even the most beautiful scenery
Spend at least an afternoon in Seattle enjoying their coffee culture

Chinatown
Las Vegas’ Chinatown extends along Spring Mountain Rd. near the Strip, best described as a sprawling district and home to endless plazas full of pan-asian eateries, shops, tea stores, karaoke bars and more.
I have many recommendations for this area of town, but here is a short list of my go-to’s all within a 10 minute drive from the Strip or the Arts District.
Tumblr media
The Golden Tiki
This tiki bar reminds me of the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland, infamous for it’s kitschy theme-park style ambiance and interactive decor... you can even get a Dole Whip here with a rum float. The Golden Tiki is tall on tiki themes, but it lacks a sort of genuine patina. Don’t get me wrong, this place is fun and there is so much to look at in this joint I’ve tried to sit somewhere different each time I visited, which was often. Unlike Frankie’s, the Golden Tiki actually has happy hour that includes tiki cocktails and beers, a short food menu and live bands. But, take my advice and save your souvenir drink purchase for Frankie’s Tiki Room.
Ronald’s Donuts
Have you checked out my list of Vegas Donut Joints? Well, this spot is no. 1 on my list. A no-frills, friendly, cash-only donut spot that keeps traditional early hours. These donuts are always fresh, never greasy with lots of varieties and even some dairy-free pastry options like their Apple Burrito.
The Sand Dollar Lounge
A vintage Vegas relic restored to glory, this original jazz and blues spot was a frequent stop for legendary musicians to unwind and jam after their gigs on the strip. Order one of their re-imagined cocktails like a Biker Mama or a Hoochie Coochie Man.
Kung Fu Thai & Chinese
Kung Fu Thai & Chinese can’t be beat for fast dining service, inexpensive beers and great food. Originally opened downtown in 1974, frequented by Vegas icon Jackie Gaughan of the El Cortez, and later moved to their current Chinatown location in the 90′s. A stone’s throw from the bars on this list, it has become one of my favorite Chinatown restaurants.
Lee’s Sandwiches
Anyone looking for late-night grub without the wait, Lee’s is one of my top 24-hour recommendations for fast food. Their fresh baked french baguettes permeate the air all day-long. I like to order their Bahn Mi, but they also offer coconut waffles, buns, breakfast and deli sandwiches, smoothies, boba tea and more.

Thai food or Thai cuisine mainly falls into four categories- tom (boiled dishes), yam (spicy salads), tam (pounded foods) and gaeng (curries). Deep fries, stir-fries and steamed dishes are derived from Chinese cooking. Thai food is generally very salty because of the use of the fish sauce, curry paste and shrimp paste. Along with the fish sauce main ingredients that are used in Thai cuisine are limes, chilies and a lot of herbs.

OUR VEGAS MARRIAGE..part 7
We continued hobbling , in my case, as i had done some damage to my Achilles tendon while running after a dog before leaving ,and it was gradually getting worse, along the sidewalk , feeling like extras in Laurence of Arabia, and wondering whether the Venetian Canals , Eiffel Towers , Draculas, or was it Disney, Castles were in fact mirages when we came to a Bus Stop.It was the Double Decker Deuce, heading Downtown, all day pass 2 Dollars fifty, the only drawback being that instead of a Bus it was more of a Mobile fridge, having the A/C set at about 60 degrees below the outside temperature , or that s what it felt like. fortunately Aurora had packed  North Face Down jackets in the daypack I was carrying , so dressed for the Ski slopes we headed for the Fremont experience , whatever that was.
Fremont Street , named after the Fremont River in neighbouring Utah, home to Fremont culture , a prehistoric people who lived in the area from 600 to 1300 AD, is where the original casinos and other dens of vice had been set up in the 1930s, some with money from Mormon Banks. The Strip had come later ,and the money for the Strip came from various sources , some legit , others less so, to this day many parts of the Strip are not within the Las Vegas city limits, but are in neighbouring Paradise and Winchester , and thus the taxes do not benefit the City, although these two unincorporated communities, like Vegas , are in Clark County .The downtown area had begun to deteriorate and thus it was in the citys interest to revive it.Its  revitalisation began  in 1995, with the establishment of the aforementioned Fremont Street Experience, which consists of a pedestrian precinct roofed with a continuously changing projection of such motifs as the Stars and Stripes, while an ever changing array of mainly rock performers change places on a various stages..and various buskers who no one ever seemed to give money to , play in painted circles on the concrete.A sort of downmarket , Covent Garden on steroids with lots of noise and a never ending stream of people on zip wires gliding above. All in all quite fun , at first.
The main attraction of Downtown is that it s on a human scale , and there are restaurants and shops that are not attached to the hotels , including a Superb Thai restaurant we headed to across 4th street , which divides Fremont Street proper , from the Experience .It was also conveniently near a Pawnshop which I fantasised would be overflowing with Musical Instruments , High school rings and the like , left behind by penniless gamblers.. No such luck, in the end I bought an I Pad ,second hand ,at a higher price than I d been quoted for the same model , new , in Dallas     Aurora is not a big fan of Starch in food , so Asian cuisine, without Rice is the order of the day , that s fine with me , as I could see that answering the question "Do you want fries with that?" ..in the affirmative a few times a day could lead to having to buy a new wardrobe.    We walked  to the Townhall for our Marriage licence, GPS is a wonderful thing,.  Those people who have experienced Latin American  and  Southern European bureaucracy will probably imagine a whole afternoon going from one office to another and being fleeced in each, Venezuela and Italy being listed as the two most inefficient bureaucracies on the planet  by the World Economic Forum, beating anywhere in Africa .However here in the USA most things work , and work well.It was all done so smoothly and with such politeness and good humour thjat it left us enough  time to check out on foot various hotels. and motels with the idea of relocating the next day, having had enough of the Strip ,finally deciding on the Grand, for its location.ie walking distance to the Thai restaurant.
All the walking around took its toll, and having various appointments the next day we took the bus back to Caesars Palace. By now it was dark and Las Vegas is a place best seen  at night. Opposite the door to the hotel was a 10 storey Illuminated billboard advertising Donny and Marie, yes , you ve probably forgotten them as well , or tried to, but they are still very much at it.Mormonism is one of those aspects of American life the visitor will probably not devote a lot of time to, most people regarding it as one of those dotty Americanisms that give the place charm , but are quite harmless. The history of how Utah , the 12 th largest state ,was founded tells a very different tale.`Sherlock Holmes fans will of couse be familiar with the terrorist aspects of the Mormons occupation of Utah and the surrounding area , including Las Vegas, from the Conan Doyle story, A Study in Scarlet, and he had no need to exaggerate      Utah was not renowned for its hospitality to non practioners, and   many settlers en route to California never made it.One of the more infamous incidents was the Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857, when a wagon train of 120 pioneers heading for California from Arkansas, were slaughtered by Mormons , some of whom were disguised as Paiute Indians. Some of the settlers who survived the five day siege of their Wagon train were then persuaded that they would be escorted peacefully out of the State, but as the Mormons suspected that the settlers had realised their attackers were not really Indians, they separated the men  from the women and children , shot the men ,and clubbed the women and children to death, except some of the smaller children who were adopted by local families. The killers were then sworn to secrecy.
Of course all that happened a long time ago, well ,fairly long ago,, and the Church of Latter Day Saints has had plenty of time and money to spend on public relations in the interim.

This Is Why This Year Will Be The Year Of city.
These Regional Practices In city Are So Unusual That They Will certainly Make Your Jaw Go down!
Among the main goals in life of a person is to finally have a place to call his very own. This whole article would seems rather pointless thinking about that Chicago, one of the most architecturally appropriate city in the country has been ended the checklist. No city has a more attractive backdrop after that SF with great matching design. If you plan to reach a SAR City on Friday prior to the evening classes begin, you could either go out to consume at a range of neighboring restaurants or make certain to bring supper with you, because there's nothing readily available on university that evening besides some treats.
city Has The Solution to Whatever.
Erected in 1975, First Canadian Area was originally named as First Financial institution Building. The entire city appears to focus on the square with individuals everywhere, either on their means to the workplace, out for purchasing, off to the theater, otherwise gradually strolling around under the gorgeous gallery of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The primary eating establishments within the Ancient City are to be found along the waterside. Wave City presents, a 4800 acre integrated territory on NH 24 Highway in Ghaziabad, few Kilometres from Greater Noida/ NOIDA. A social facility for the city, the gallery supplies tours, family-oriented programs, attractive arts display screens, ever-changing historic exhibits, as well as other occasions throughout the year. A couple of points of interest-- Eagle Creek Park as well as Nature Preserve, Kid's Museum of Indianapolis, White River State Park, Indianapolis Gallery of Art, Eiteljorg Gallery of American Indian as well as Western Art, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indianapolis Zoo, Indiana Globe Battle Memorial and also Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site. Naturally, the fantastic sites of nationwide heritage ought to not and might not be taken apart, so for the most part shows which come under this classification are fairly ordinary yet culturally substantial structures, which stand for the domestic way of living of the Thais via history.
15 Shitty Points city Have Done In 2015.
The city wased established by Greek inhabitants in the Eighth Century B. C. as well as passed from one hand to one more over the centuries. Delhi actually is somewhat of an independent entity from the remainder of India and it could be easily compared to a state of India instead of just a city. The island itself was settled way back in the Fifth Millenium B.C. as well as the city of the same name, population twelve thousand, was cleared experience project sign up (find more info) in the Eighth Century B.C. The Roman causeway is still standing however you'll probably reach the mainland and also back by a modern-day version. You have no reliability as a travel author after this article's ommission of Chicago. Wanderlust, you assert Chicago is as well similar to New york city City to earn it into your checklist. Because of its reduced airline prices and also affordable resorts and also restaurants, Las Las vega itself is a much more appealing location for visitors compared to Salt Lake City. I have given you info regarding some popular visitor destinations for going to in Atlanta city for Vacations as well as guarantees that if you attempt it you could make your vacation unforgettable. That is on top of the facilities the city itself needs to offer, which typically aren't as well shoddy. Among the best Atlanta tourist destinations is the High Museum of Art that houses the city of Atlanta's finest collection of contemporary and contemporary art, The Great Hall has a skylight that is 86 feet from below, and the Fembank Gallery of Natural History has a 315-seat IMAX theatre inside it. You can invest hours in these 2 locations alone. Downtown L.A.'s Town hall, Union Terminal, Millennium Biltmore Hotel and the Bradbury Building have been featured for years. Incidentally, I'm from Chicago as well as I agree with those that have claimed it belongs on this listing. Visitor usually involve Bokaro Steel City to see the steel plant and to see the procedure of steel making. Colonial Spanish quarter - is a living background museum showing the life of Spanish Soldiers and also their family members in 1740 St. Augustine. Travel overviews could also warn their clients far from utilizing a short-term apartments Amsterdam, nonetheless the city is barely as pleasurable without enjoying its true lodgings. And why not, the city is absolutely amazing - attractive canals and also cobbled squares, copper spires and narrow roads, quaint old residences as well as flowering gardens, comfy sidewalk cafes and alluring bakery. Mexico City is also taken into consideration among the top 10 richest cities on the planet, as its financial growth is expected to continue in years to find.

Stitch Along with Aloha.
Southeastern Outings is actually a charitable company devoted to financing getaways for people which take pleasure in taking part in simple outside journeys. The limberness of the bed mattress implied that this was tough to maintain my equilibrium in an ethical posture. The New York supper was almost certainly the last opportunity they will be in the very same room prior to Election Time. Thursday evening our good friends Jeff and Cindy drove out from Madisonville (across the lake from New Orleans) and our team possessed a very nice supper at Outdoor patio 44 in downtown Biloxi. The Al Johnson supper happened a time after a brutal presidential discussion between Clinton and also Trump on Wednesday in Las Vegas. What works for me is, I have my Metformin at dinner and also as I am actually consuming morning meal. After our float and swim, we'll walk below one kilometer back to the cars and trucks and afterwards go for downpours as well as an extra supper. That was just after our team returned from dinner and also had a possibility to regroup that we made a decision to forego the additional evening and keep relocating. For supper tonight I got the Escargot, Fruit Soup (also salted), Italian Wedding celebration Soup, and also a NY Bit Meat. The strong phantom of a girl in a lengthy sulky dress coasts ethereally back and forth the staircase. Hailing down a taxi by the kerbside, her buddy took our team to Hanaya Japanese Dining establishment for supper. Our company possessed beverages in the great Accommodation Landscape then went to dinner at a brand-new very hot restaurant gotten in touch with Bones There were actually as many more residents compared to tourists as this's brand new to Brugge and also the principle is actually: Ribs. befit-besporty.info The animosity in between your management and also media outlets reached a brand-new height recently at the Traditional Political Activity Association when you once more called exactly what you pertained to as artificial" media the foe of people" The very same time, the White Property precisely prevented coming from participating in a press briefing contributors from many media organizations, featuring The New York Moments and Politico, whose contributors I had found in the course of the supper in 2013. The ramifications from a poor operating moment on our mind performing and total intellect degrees are actually tough to over-estimate.
