Inside the Mind of Joe R. Lansdale: Exploring Horror, Humor, and Humanity
Tumblr media
In a genre that lives to thrill, shock, and unnerve, Joe R. Lansdale has long held a distinctive place as a master of horror fiction. Known for his unorthodox style, Lansdale has built a career on blending dark themes with unexpected humor, empathy, and authenticity.
In his interview with Twisted Pulp magazine, Lansdale opens up about his influences, his thoughts on horror, and what it takes to tell a story that resonates with readers.
The Origins of Lansdale’s Storytelling
Lansdale’s journey into fiction didn’t come from a traditional literary background, his storytelling grew out of personal experience as much as from literary influence. This deep connection to his life experience has allowed Lansdale to carve out a storytelling style that feels not only real but raw, reflecting a genuine familiarity with the eerie, odd, and unsettling aspects of life.
Finding Humanity in Dark Fiction
What sets Joe Lansdale apart from many writers is his dedication to writing deeply human characters, even in the most inhuman of circumstances. Lansdale’s characters often feel like real people with genuine reactions, a reflection of his belief that stories are ultimately about people, no matter how outlandish the plot may be. He believes this sense of humanity is what helps readers truly engage with a story, allowing them to experience the horror on a personal level.
Embracing Creative Freedom
Lansdale’s approach to writing is refreshingly fearless. He admits that he doesn’t overthink the boundaries of genre or worry about fitting neatly into a category. Instead, he lets the story dictate its own direction. In the end, Lansdale’s unique voice has left a lasting impact, transforming it into something that goes beyond mere thrills. His blend of horror, humor, and humanity is an invitation into a world that is frighteningly real and uniquely his own.
For fans of horror or anyone who loves a well-told tale, the full interview with Joe R. Lansdale in Twisted Pulp is a must-read.

Hi everyone. I live in Texas, and due to the recent storms, straight lines and tornados, I was out of my home for awhile. I’m still struggling with dealing with it between the emotional toll and the financial hardship I’m now under.
So, as much as it saddens me, until further notice, I’m not going to be updating my Patreon or updating my analog story My Brother’s Hot Friend. I love creating and writing, but there’s just too much going on for me unfortunately, and I don’t have the time or emotional energy to put into writing right now.
My Patreon and Ko-fi will be left up for now because I want to try to come back in the next couple months, and I made notes on both explaining that I won’t be updating my subscriptions anytime soon. You can follow them for free if you want to stay updated on when I’ll be posting again.
Thanks everyone. I’ll be back when things settle down.

Authors and how they use their wealth
John Green: Uses his wealth to help fight tuberculosis
Rick Rhodian: Set up a publishing arm for Black, Asian, Hispanic and Indigenous authors
Andrea White: Campaigns for education and reading.
Many other authors have highlighted injustice.
Suzanne Collins: Disappeared into the woods
Then you have JK Rowling who is using her wealth to fund hate.
If I ever become a successful author, I would use my wealth to fight against injustice or pull a Suzanne Collins and disappear, only going out in public to promote a new book.

Will never get over how this poster art SHOULD belong to some problematic late 80s underground slasher/revenge action/queer cinema film that's about a trans woman who is mutilated in a hate crime and after being released from the hospital goes on a killing spree through grimy late 80s New York of the people involved in the attack.
Instead it belongs to a movie so terrible the studio shelved it until its leads got famous for other roles.

Chalk Mountain
+ a WiP introduction
(status: third draft)
genre(s): fantasy, action, au
tone(s): regional gothic, found family, prophesies, platonic love, lgbt+ protag, "magic" abilities
warning(s): blood, harsh family relations, death, cursing -- (will be editing to add more as i come across them)
tag: #wip: chalk mountain
"stay away from the bluebonnets," dixie's mother always said. "they know your secrets and will trick you with good smelling petals and a comfortable place to rest after a picnic; but eventually you will never get up, eventually you will be blue, floral, swaying in the hot wind, watching as people pass by until another sleepy bystander succumbs to take their last nap as the person they were. before they take them. before they take you."
(will be adding links to characters and more characters and some other stuff when they are ready; this will be reblogged when updated with anything. authors notes at the end!)
characters and descriptions! (to be edited)
Dixie Alvarez is the protagonist of this story. A heroine against her will, Dixie has a smart mouth and a bad habit of holding grudges; she never fit in anywhere and always managed to piss somebody off no matter where she was. A difficult relationship with her father and her mothers abandonment drives her to flee her home in search of a new, quiet, and peaceful life with people like her. Outcasts. So, she set off in her trashy green minivan to a town her mother used to tell her about in stories. Chalk Mountain. Curly, mid-length red hair, downturned brown eyes, freckles, (mostly) untamed eyebrows, 5'7". Evolved (unknown)
Emilio Baku is the side character, Dixie's best friend, and partner in crime. Ripped away from his home in Korea, Emilio developed a big heart that was always open to others after his adoptive parents took him in like it was nothing; he has now been in Chalk Mountain since he was 5 years old. Lovable teddy bear meets ruthless suppressed anger makes a man willing to do anything to protect what he loves. Short black hair that's always a little messy, deep dark brown eyes, faded burn scars cover his hands. 6'2". Evolved
Franklin and Maude are Emilio's adoptive parents and Dixie's guardians. Maude has been in Chalk Mountain since she was born. Her mother was a jailer before the town went bankrupt after a false meteorite claim that drained their tourism. Franklin came later, after he was found out as an Evolved and began to be hunted down. He took refuge in Chalk mountain 27 years ago and soon after met Maude. Maude: long, straight, gray hair, white eyes, smile lines, eye wrinkles, 7'6". Franklin: long gray hair, tall and slender figure, milky white eyes. 7'6". Both Evolved.
extra characters + descriptions (to be expanded)
The Oracle -> eons old but presents as around 30s/40s. vitiligo, blind with white irises, waist length wavy hair as black as the night sky, various markings and tattoos and scars. can only speak in prophet but can communicate in your dreams.
Marigold Alvarez -> Dixie's mother, very, very, VERY powerful woman. A force to be reckoned with, legends about her, and large popularity around Chalk Mountain. Marigold has been missing for over 11 years now, but Dixie hasn't seen her since before she herself was 12 years old. Short red bob, green eyes, freckles, permanent smirk on her face with smile lines. 5'9". Last known location: Chalk Mountain.
Walter Alvarez -> Dixie's father, loud, overbearing. One night after a screaming fight that Dixie overheard, her mother left in a tizzy. She watched her mom speed off in the car from her bedroom window, never to be seen or heard of again. Walter makes a point to never speak of Marigold and has tried painting her to be the villain ever since. Salt and pepper, short, gelled, curly hair, 5'8". Husky figure, brown eyes, grungy teeth.

Writing my debut novel, ‘Corpus Christi, Texas,’ changed my life in many ways. It allowed me to discover my strengths and talents while unearthing my flaws and weaknesses. At a time when I was recovering from Anorexia nervosa and lacked love and affection in most of my friendships and relationships, writing kept me on my feet. It was the lifeline that saved me. I no longer cared about my body's appearance or weight; I stopped purging and started eating. The characters in my book occupied most of my mental space. Tony, the protagonist of this story, became someone I deeply loved and appreciated through the writing process. When I finished writing the last page of the book, I realized I hadn't created an entirely new character; I had been writing about myself. I then concluded that Tony was a hyperbolic representation of my own self. Creating Tony made me fall in love with myself once again. He healed my broken wings and allowed me to discover my self-worth in a new way.
‘Corpus Christi, Texas’ delves deep into the human psyche, exposing raw facets of sexual desire, corruption, and the blurred lines between morality and immorality. It aims to explore the intricate relationship between good and evil, the dichotomy of God and Satan, while skillfully weaving Catholic imagery into the tapestry of a recessionary America. The book meticulously examines the complex relationship between American and Mexican culture, unearthing hidden connections and disparities that challenge conventional perspectives. As a whole, the novel fearlessly portrays the darker aspects of human nature, intertwining themes of culture, religion, and authority.
That being said, I am pleased to announce that my book is officially available now, worldwide on Amazon, in both paperback and ebook versions. Just as writing this book changed my life, I hope that when you read it, it changes yours.
See you in hell,
Cruz Del Castillo ✞
Available to purchase now in the link in my bio.

Naw what
Madeline isn't a little French orphan being raised by nuns?
She's a Texan ranch owning oil heiress with stock in Neiman Marcus who seemingly grew up in a Paris boarding school until at least 1939??
