2024 Book Review #17 – Terra Incognita by Connie Willis
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/389e3fc51be2748116ed6acc81da2ca6/0ebc54257da23bf9-ec/s400x600/dc9a14d04122f20d9da0dd4741a85f8a57c4b949.jpg)
Connie Willis is a name I have heard come up a lot with regard to late 20th century American Science Fiction, but in a slightly odd way. The only thing she’s actually written that I’ve ever heard of is To Say Nothing of the Dog (a delightful-sounding book that tragically has a multimonth hold list at my library). Instead, I mostly know her from other books’ acknowledgement sections, or semi-mythologized folklore and anecdotes about the culture and community of the era. So I really picked this up as a matter of curiosity, to get a sense of what Willis’ whole deal is.
The book is a collection of three novellas, each basically totally unrelated with only the faintest attempt at a unifying theme to justify bundling the three of them together. Each work is pretty different from the others in everything from length (the longest is something like 3x the length of the shortest), tone, setting and subject matter, the works really. The first is a sort of romcom farce about surveyors charting an alien world that has, well, aged. The second and longest a love letter to classic classic hollywood and movie musicals as told from the POV of a self-hating drunk who pays the bills going through and retroactively editing the studio’s back catalogue to meet the whims of the executive of the day. The third and by far shortest is a lighthearted and very fannish comedy about a teenager getting conscripted to be a space cadet against her own ferocious objections.
The stories are all perfectly modern in, like, structure and pacing, but they still absolutely feel like they were written last century. Part of that is just word choice (the only thing that ages worse than old euphemisms for sex is old attempts to create futuristic slang), but it’s also just a general sensibility. Which is most cringe-inducing in the first story, both for its portrayal of the native species of the planet being surveyed (directly compared to native americans a few different times, characterized as relentlessly opportunistic penny-wise but pound-foolish hucksters leaping at the chance to sell their land for cheap imported consumer goods), and also just for a handling of gender and sexuality it’d take more time than I’ve got to really dig into. (I have a sense of where all those tomboy versus girly girl memes ultimately descend from now, though.) The other two more just felt out of time than actually wince-inducing, with the third story especially feeling like an affectionate nod to the fan culture of a different era. That said, the second one’s whole horrified preoccupation with a Hollywood that refuses to make anything new instead of just remaking the same sure things from its back catalog forevermore either never stopped or has looped back around to feeling real topical.
Insofar as I’m already reading romances, I admit I do have a real soft spot for the whole ‘idiots compensate for total refusal to communicate feelings with grand romantic gestures and hoping the object of their desires will get the idea. It doesn’t work.’ thing that’s a bit of a recurring beat in two of the novellas though.
Prose and characterization wise, all three were pretty well done – though riffing off tropes and archetypes that I honestly can’t remember the last time I’ve seen played sincerely and unironically, which did always leave me feeling I was missing context on how to read them. Which is pretty much what I was hoping for going in, to be clear – what’s the point of reading older stories, otherwise? Which is nice, because the actual reading experience of going through it was a bit of a slog. The first one was the real trial, but just overall I’d say the book’s more interesting as a cultural artifact than an artistic work. Oh well, c’est la vie.

What are your Poptropica ocs?
I had to look through my stories just to remind myself XD
Fauna: Half nymph, half satyr from Mythology Island. Her personality is actually similar to Rumpelstiltskin, now that I'm thinking about it!
Willie the Steamboat: A talking cartoon steamboat from Rubber Hose Island. (At the end of The Parent Trapped he gains the ability to turn into a submarine and back)
Merboy: No, that's not his actual name XD The humans just call him that (the way Bambi called the skunk Flower). He comes from the Merpeople world. He likes to turn humans into Merpeople.
Kronos: The evil little baby pulling all (well, most) of the strings. Is the embodiment of Time and the Nexus.
Terra Strail: Terra Strail is actually this lady. I just gave her a name. I also made her take the identity as the Crystal Crusader.
Crystal: An Ice Giant that Terra Strail befriended on Ice Giant Island.
Okeanos: Kronos' older brother, and one of the few Titans who didn't participate in the Titanomachy. Back in the day he tried to keep the islands separated, since it would help prevent Kronos from finding a way to escape.
Dark Astro-Knight: An Astro-Knight from a different timestream whose island was sent to the Void. They are actually this costume, I just added a character and convoluted backstory to it XD
Myson, Olivia, and Jordan: Gender-bend Terrible Trio basically :)
Rhea: Kronos' honey. She saved Zeus from being eaten by him! She is trapped in Tartarus with the other Titans, but can appear to humans in a spirit form: a lioness.

Oooooh man im watching the end:
Part 1 feels so sad, raven trying to do all the things for her friends on their last day is honestly so so so sad
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/86bee1d7e39ba9fffa0dd8b8b91b14cc/44a0dffe759444e6-24/s540x810/e2f59b89d20e11954129f1557eaeec663b2b7b78.jpg)

This projection thing is sick
Them making her the bunker behind her back because she probably would have opposed to it
Beast boy quickly giving her the penny is the most sweetest things ever im actually gonna cry, and every time they did a close up on it
It makes me so sad that she doesnt even try to fight back despite if she goes the end is innevitable. I guess she just wanted to get it over with so her friends dont need to spend any moore time of their ladt moments fighting for her :((((
Raerae my babyyyyyy
"Stay safe" 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Her absolutely obliterating Slade with words is so amazing i cant even-
The raven leading them all together, their hands in the middle, the hope 😭
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a7caf796b295d7563ff9b7b530f998ec/44a0dffe759444e6-81/s540x810/b5141ce760fd3acf60f8c4933c55e5a3259c12ce.jpg)
Im so happy with this little call back to season 1's "switched" where raven and star switched bodues and learned how to use their powers, its so good and im glad star remembered that because she would
Her giving them a bit of her power is so sick and them all saying "azarath metrion zinthos" is so so sick
Can i say the ost for this show as a whole in EVERY episode is absolutely sick and sounds so good i would listen to it on its own, but they also know how to dial it down and turn off the music for so much inpact its crazy, they did it with some apprentice arc scenes and haunted and such and it works so well to hear the atmosphere and suspense is perfect, i also like the ost that plays when the "dark versions" of star, cy and BB appear, its so minimal and impactful (i also like the konochrome no shading look they have) them talking is also pretty creepy
BB going inside trigon's ear and turning into a whale is so smart and also the "wet willie" he said he would give trigon XD
I knew slade teams up with them in this episode but it still feels weird! Also rob volunteered tovfind rae but honestly i think that BB has the closest bond with her and the little things he does through the series, and the penny he gave her, i dont ship them really at all but i feel like he has the closer bond and whole robin is my favorite and the leader, it would have made more sense for BB to go, and more emotionally impactful
Also dont say robin cant stay cuz he would easily beat the shadow titans but they could have done that and nobody would really care too much, they were defeated before by that robot that tried to beat cy in "only human" so shadows of themselves could definetly still proviide a problem with robin there, and it would have made no difference to how that scene could have went
Slade has a point, uf he gets a thing he wants and the end of the world is gonna happen anyway, he might as well take the deal.
Also i thought this whole time that "what he had lost" was gonna be his son or something cuz i didnt have any clue what it could be and drew on the tiny bit of deathstroke comic lore i knew but i was still skeptical, i was NOT expecting the skeleton tho, that seriously shocked me.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c2de3c48feb3ba7350a3e3fbe80405e9/44a0dffe759444e6-8f/s540x810/c1b4b03b9c1caad8dd0d3df4f35921781979d0d8.jpg)
Him saying "The fringe benifits were quite enjoyable" and then panning on this scene is just:
Ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew no no no no no no no no no no no no
Knowing what that episode implied and then this line is just ewwwwwwwwwww 😭
Slade and robin being mirrors while fighting litterally on the same wavelength and same split second is more of a testament to how alike they are 0.0
"Im here to save you too" robin saying about slade is 0.0 D: as well
AHA I KNEW THEY HAD TO FIGHT EACH OTHER'S SHADOW TO DEFEAT THEM!!!
BB's saying that terra was right to dump him is just vile
Still think that BB going after raven would have felt more impactful, like sure, robin and raven have been in each other's minds or something and i feel like them being the main two in "birthmark" makes so much sense, but for this, i feel like it makes more sense for BB to go, he's spent the entire show getting to understand raven more deeply than any other character, and he has littlerally been inside her mind. I dont ship them at all but their strong platonic bond would have been perfect for this
Baby rae sounds so weird her voice like that lol
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/5f730e8f6e8357ca5502cc4c14687934/44a0dffe759444e6-79/s540x810/376441931f592cf9b76bf1fbcbf8c99b06437d59.jpg)
SO. SMALL.
The big white projection raven is so sick lookin. You go girl!!
BB what do you mean raven giving hugs is weird? She litterally gave you a hug at the end of "spellbound"!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/17aad3a0e591455c70ddc42a298b3e99/44a0dffe759444e6-8a/s540x810/957feded7c41dbcf354cee080de2f278f8ef7a50.jpg)
Maaann i love them so much.
Something i love about this show is that the titans' friendships is strong and genuine, they care deeply for eachother, truly want to connect to eachother, make sure each ither is okay, they believe wachother instantly when something us wrong and dint disregard eachother's feelings, nobody is ever the butt of the joke and nobody is made to feel bad on purpose by the others, even if they are all completely different from one another, and if it happens then they do their best to make the sincerest of apologies. Them being mad at each other is always coming from a place of frustration from wanting to hang out and enjoy each other's company but just not understanding how
Many kids shows make friends kinda hate eachother, always get on their bad sides, cant seem to stand each other, and always have one of the others as the butt of jokes (even teen titans go does this! D:) so i really love this show for that
"We'll be ready for him" is what cyborg said at the end of "haunted" which i guess goes to show the hope and trust they have in themselves and eachother
Again i would say BB would have worked a lot better for this last scene with raven instead of robin, since BB while being a bit childish, is still really emotionally intellegent! (I mean look at all his interactions with raven and terra!) And this little speach about raven having the most hope does sound like something beast boy would say more than robin (yes he is the leader, but it sounds more right in BB's voice), like, i can imagine vividly what it would be like with bb in robin's place and it makes so much more sense. I honestly wanna draw a version of the same events but with bb instead but thats so hard to do and would take forever sooo :/ thats only a maybe few pannels kinda thing MAYBE
This is a sick arc, the music again was so cool,
I think my favorite part was part 1 tbh, before any of the world taking over takes place

"The machine—which operates around a fulcrum of big money, high society, and socially progressive ideas—has molded such Democratic politicians as governors Pat Brown and Jerry Brown (father and son); Willie Brown (former San Francisco mayor, machine boss, and no relation); Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi; U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein; former U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer; San Francisco mayors Ed Lee and London Breed; and San Francisco mayor, lieutenant governor, and now governor Gavin Newsom".

He has heard about how the Chaos gods or some thing out there must have some measure of influence over this world. How whatever entities that do this seem to do this willy nilly, no pattern to be seen. He had raged when he found himself transported from the middle of a battlefield to a vast open grassland.
It was a relief to him to find a small warband of fellow brothers who were roaming to find a place to lay claim to. Only for him to realize that none of them were from the same... time. Some were from centuries ago when they had only just turned their backs on the Imperium with one from an entire century later than him. He's thoroughly confused by it all, his new brothers didn't have much answers on how or why. Mere speculations and theories.
It's difficult getting used to the lack of enemies. Most of the various warbands, chapters and legions have an unspoken truce in place, seemingly something new in their subconscious making them less willing to start a war in this medieval version of Terra. He gets by by sparring with these new brothers of his, finding new challenges in those not around his time.
But it was the bonding that surprised him most. That there's a curse that turns the most savage and feral brothers into purring house broken marines. He scoffed at the idea, adamant that he would never fall to such an ailment. If he did he would cut down the worthless human for daring to trap him in such a way.
That was until it happened to him.
Sneaking through dimly lit roads in the chill of winter, he chanced upon a young lady making her way back home. He thought to ignore her and simply carry on, she's not worth his energy. Something decided otherwise, he felt like he was made a passenger in his own body as his head turned and his gaze met hers. Behind eerie green lens his eyes widen, something within himself starts to crack and crumble in a landslide. From the rubble of his brutality a seedling grows, green shoots pointed to the skies and gentle leaves form. This little seedling reaches up, desperate for the sunlight of gentleness and acceptance, offering devotion and unyielding love in return.
The young lady takes a step back in that moment, shocked by his intimidating form. She slips on the pavement and he moves in a blurr. As he holds her gently, some part of him purrs, proud to have saved her from harm. His hearts race when she shyly thanks him for helping her. His warband is the furthest thing from his mind when he picks up her bag off the ground and follows her. Brothers? They can wait.
Grey eyes occasionally flick to take in his surroundings as he walks his human back to her apartment block. Rough croons of gothic leaves his lips as she timidly opens up to him with every step. He has to take it slow, he knows that humans don't feel this pull the way his kind does. He forces himself to step away once his human reaches her house. She gives him a small but sweet smile as she takes her bag from him, his hearts melt like the snow that falls upon his armor.
He makes his way back to his warband, turning back to see the lights in her apartment. His eyes spot his human with ease, watching until she disappears from view. Only then that he starts moving again. He has to inform his warband that he will not be staying them for much longer.

Sorry that this is a long one. I tried to stay on topic. I was trying to explore how bonding might be different for the more bloodthirsty individuals, if only to keep them from harming their bonded humans.

This sounds rude, but it's not reading your slade stuff, and I do think people forget he's literally a pedophile or has some pedophilic urges from everything with Tarra and like that's why I can never think Brudick is worse than Sladick? Because Bruce is weird and in some senses may have similar stories but he's not canonically a pedophile which is bad
Don't worry, it's not rude! You're just obnoxious and this commentary was unneeded. Here's why:
1) I really don't think people forget that about Slade. Most Slade fans just don't particularly care because, as most people would attest to, being a mercenary with a body count in the hundreds is generally morally incorrect. Someone enjoying a character and enjoying a FICTIONAL CHARACTER, even if that character does something morally wrong, is NOT saying that they condone it or think it's fine
2) The situation with Terra and Slade is absolutely her getting groomed, but there is a *very* big difference between someone being an abuser and someone being a pedophile. Throwing around that word all willy nilly detracts from the seriousness of the term.
Slade grooms Terra. It's heavily implied that they had sex. (He actually seemed pretty disinterested in actually having sex with her, but it could have been retconned after the original comics). But at the very least, in my reading, it didn't seem like he was targeting her with the intention of sex or because she was a minor. It was because he saw an opportunity to manipulate someone naive, who wanted to be treated as an adult and an equal, and took advantage of that.
Afaik, there isn't a *pattern* of Slade targeting minors, at least in the comics. Not any more so than an off-color comment here and there, as is standard for comic books.
3) Brudick and Sladick are both toxic ships. They're both unhealthy relationships, and they're both ill-advised for anyone in real life, and that's the *fun* part of it. It's fun to explore what these relationships look like. If Slade is a pedophile for being with Dick, then so is Bruce! It cancels out. The post I assume you're referring to was commentating on the fact that Slade would be incredibly open about the relationship being unhealthy, he wouldn't pretend that it was anything other than toxic or dangerous. Bruce, on the other hand, would look away from any evidence that he was hurting Dick out of fear of losing him.
Bruce and Dick have an unbalanced power dynamic for a LOT of reasons. Whether you want to see Dick as his son here is irrelevant. Regardless of familial relation, Bruce is still the person that Dick is relying on for most of his life. Bruce very much could have leveraged his ties. You're telling me that a relationship where both people are toxic and unhealthy is more dangerous than a relationship where one person relies on the other to keep from being in the Gotham foster care system? Be so for real.
At least one of them is aware of the damage they do.
4) guess what? They're not real people. There are about thirty million conflicting character traits in every DC character, and picking and choosing which ones you want to explore is normal. I hate the fact that Dick was canonically a cop- I'm not going to downright ignore it, because it is a part of his character and is relevant in certain discussions, but I'm not going to focus on it in my analysis and in my participation in his fan base because it's not something I'm interested in. I hate Wally west- do you see me sending asks and shitting on him to his fans bc of it? If Slade as a character is bothersome to you, then don't interact with content or discussions around Slade.
Simple as that.
#look#im not trying to be too much of an asshole here#and im not saying that critiquing a character is wrong#but shutting down a discussion because a character makes you personally uncomfortable#is just boring#come back when you have an actual opinion on the character#then we can talk

In diesem ersten Blog bzw.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4b0b1353bc997bac750b71c2ccde85af/17cc5d13e08a1247-76/s540x810/952fef68f50a8524ce94dd8e5e9fb5ccb36dd071.jpg)

Meine Empfehlung: Unbedingt ansehen!

On 29th February 1904 the Pavilion Theatre, Glasgow, opened.
Designed by Bertie Crewe for Thomas Barrasford, the Pavilion Theatre opened at the corner of Renfield Street and Renfrew Street, Glasgow on the 29 February, 1904. It was regarded as luxurious for its time with its decor being described by the owners as “pure Louis XV”. An electrically operated sliding roof ensured good ventilation.
Performances in the early days were mainly variety, melodrama and pantomime. Many of the leading music hall artistes of the period appeared at the Pavilion, including Marie Lloyd, Little Tich, Harry Lauder, Florrie Forde, Will Fyffe, Sarah Bernhardt and a then unknown Charlie Chaplin.
Since the 1930s, the Pavilion began to host pantomimes with top name stars of the Scottish variety scene, such as Harry Gordon and Dave Willis. In more recent times it has produced plays, such as ‘The Sash’ and ‘The Steamie’.
The Pavilion Theatre is now the only privately run theatre in Scotland and one of a few unsubsidised independent theatres left in Britain.
“Defying all the odds, Glasgow’s Pavilion regularly purveys variety to this day. All the more remarkable as it is completely unsubsidised and receives no funding from the Scottish Arts Council and kindred bodies whose thoughts and cash are directed at higher cultural activities. It remains the last stronghold of a long music hall tradition in Europe’s City of Culture owing everything to a dedicated staff and patrons and nothing to the public purse.
With its imposing terra cotta facade, the Pavilion Theatre of Varieties was designed by Bertie Crewe in the grand manner for Thomas Barrasford. The domed ceiling was surmounted by an electrically controlled sliding roof for ventilation. Fine Rococo plasterwork on the circle, balcony and box fronts; decoration executed in pure Louis XV; handsome mahogany woodwork and the marble mosaic floor all lent the 1800 seat theatre an aura of splendour.
No less amusing than the dentist advertising in the Pavilion programme “painless extractions with nitrous oxide for 4/- (20p) or cocaine for 1/- (5p)”, were the press observations on the “fashionable company” which attended the Pavilion’s first house on 29th February,1904. We learn that “among the elite there was quite a preponderance of ladies and gentlemen of quality in evening dress”. Alas, class consciousness and respectability were all in Edwardian Britain!
The ‘forties and ‘fifties saw pantomime runs of sixteen weeks, the happy and hilarious summer seasons were emulated during the 1960s and early 1970s by Lex McLean. Another regular crowd puller to Renfield Street was Jack Milroy.
Lulu from Dennistoun (real name Marie Lawrie) broke box office records in 1975, Billy Connolly, Hector Nicol Andy Cameron portrayed their own distinctive brands of humour while Scottish songstresses Lena Zavaroni, , Sheena Easton, Lena Martell and Barbara Dickson also scored heavily with Pavilion audiences.
It was anything but plain sailing for the Pavilion and there was gloomy speculation of closure after incurring heavy financial losses in 1981. Spared the fate which befell the Queens, Metropole, Empire, Alhambra and Empress Theatres, the 80 years old Pavilion was rescued by James Glasgow and transformed into a modest profit maker. Smash-hit shows with Sydney Devine; spells from hypnotist Robert Halpern; pantomime with Denny Willis, and one night gigs from the foremost modern television entertainers have kept the cash tills registering.
The Pavilion also played a major role in the annual Mayfest – Glasgow’s International Festival of popular theatre, music, the arts and community programmes.
Little altered and virtually unspoilt since its inception, the seating capacity of 1449 is made up of 677 stalls, 341 circle, 413 balcony and 18 box seats. While the stiff shirts in chauffeur-driven cabs have given way to coach parties from the rural areas of Strathclyde and beyond, a policy of providing the best in live entertainment has been pursued consistently. The portents look good for the vibrant Pavilion Theatre of Varieties.”
The Pavillion is, in my view a survivor, even over the past few years tragedy has struck the area with a series of fires.

Has been a real hot minute since I've read something that uses a first person POV to hide the fact that the protagonist is a woman until halfway through, though.

annoying how there's no possible way to add, remove, or severely edit any kind of limited traits when redesigning. but staff can do whatever they want with those traits when they're doing their own redesigns. i understand that they have more freedoms as staff and (if they're actually doing any of the work) deserve compensation. but it's frustrating seeing regular members struggle and bend over backwards trying their best to do what they want with a redesign when staff can just do stuff like revert a design to an illegal version or add 10 new limited traits willy nilly
this is something that always personally drove me insane. why is there NO possible way to add more coverage of a limited trait? if you have a terra with like, 5% coverage of mat parts, you can NEVER get more, not even if you comm a staff to redesign it for you. thats so bullshit. why restrict a trait when your character already has the trait?? astonishing logic to justify letting staff dance on the "rules" of the species because fuck you if you dont have their sparkly "i suck the farts out of tycho's ass" role.

How tall do you think all the outsiders are? I love for height headcanons
On another note you’re a fantastic writer and I’m adoring the series you got going on. They’re very captivating to read
So sorry for putting this off for so long ! It’s a seriously good question and I am seriously invested and for that reason! I procrastinate so much on it lol (not to say questions i immediately answer arent, i am just all over the place 😅) (also thank u so much for the kind praise 🙏💗 I am so happy ur enjoying it and it means a lot to me <33)
this ask is especially important as it has also been asked before which i will link this post to as the answer right after :)
i’m including all former and current members for completion. Also their birth years (from the YJ wiki) for added context, because why not.
okay so based on multiple YJ scenes (some examples shown below) and 1 ask greg these r my estimates:

(disclaimer these r all rough estimates, no way of knowing for 100% sure and I don’t claim to have a complete picture of all relevant scenes for height cold reading lol i would be happy to hear other peoples thoughts/ideas/corrections as well :D )
Rough Outsiders Height Ranking:
Geo-Force - Brion Markov : (2001) probably roughly max 6 ft 4 (about 1.95m)
Cyborg - Victor Stone : (2000) maybe about 6 ft 2 -3 (about 1.9m)
Blue Beetle - Jaime Reyes : (2000) about 6 ft 2 (1.88 - 1.9m) i actually have him tied with Vic, the only reason why id rank him a little lower is because in some scenes it could be his suit giving him some height.
Static - Virgil Hawkins : (2000) about 6 ft (1.85m)
El Dorado - Eduardo Dorado Jr : (2001) actually i tied him with Virgil but i’m not always certain so i’d also estimate about 6 ft but a range of (1.83-1.85m)
Superboy - Conner Kent : (2010 lol) about 5 ft 9 (1.8m)
Robin - Tim Drake : (2001) about 5 ft 8 (1.78m)
Wonder Girl - Cassie Sandsmark : (2001) id put her at the same height as Tim maybe only slightly shorter, but Greg has mentioned they’re roughly the same height so therefore also 5 ft 8 (1.78m)
Kid Flash - Bart Allen : (2043 🙄 cause hes different like that LOL jk but he’s the equivalent age of 2003) id put him between 5 ft 6 - 5 ft 7 (about 1.7 - 1.73/4m)
Livewire - Leslie Willis : (2002) about 5 ft 5 (1.68m)
Looker - Lia Briggs : (2002) about 5 ft 4 (1.65m)
Windfall - Wendy Jones : (2005) about same as Lia maybe 5 ft 3 - 4 (1.63 - 1.65m)
Beast Boy - Garfield Logan : (2002) about 5 ft 2 - 3 (1.6-1.63m)
Stargirl- Courtney Whitmore : (2003) about 5 ft 1-2 (1.55 - 1.58m)
Terra - Tara Markov : (2003) about same as Courtney 5 ft 1-2 (1.55 - 1.58m)
Forager : (?) idk lol let’s say 5 ft 😂
