Patches - II
Lotor paced in his cell, worrying over the strange looking human that looked as though he’d been in sheer agony not long ago. Princess Allura still refused to release him from his prison if only to see if the one named Mateo was alright. He seemed pleasant enough and the prince was looking forward to the chance to befriend him. He could do with a friend in such a hostile environment. He nearly gave himself whiplash when the doors slid open to reveal the Black Paladin with the human, Mateo walking behind him with his hands clasped behind his back.
“Prince Lotor, because of your cooperation, I have decided to put you on probation. You will be allowed to roam the castle so long as you’re accompanied by Mateo,” Shiro formally stated, inwardly wincing because he knew that Allura wouldn’t like this.
Lotor turned his gaze on the human who was acting like his previous episode never happened while Shiro deactivated the the barrier that prevented him from leaving. He took a couple of steps forward to stand before the piebald human. He had to look down to peer into Mateo’s eyes but he couldn’t read him. He knew that the human was guarded in the duration of his imprisonment. He never gave much away to Lotor, not much that could work in his advantage, and that intrigued the exiled prince. Sometimes Lotor could almost see the beginnings of an emotion that he might be able to recognize but almost immediately Mateo would notice and blank his face. It infuriated the prince but also made him want to figure him out even more.
“It appears that we will be spending a lot more time together,” Lotor said with a slight smirk as he held his hand out to Mateo.
The human surprised him by clasping his arm in greeting. “It seems so.” Mateo broke off the contact and began to head for the door, casually waving for Lotor to follow. “C’mon, I’ll give you a tour of the castle.”
Lotor quietly followed after the smaller human, his interest piqued. During the tour, Mateo had surprised him by the amount that he spoke during the tour. Lotor’s first impression of Mateo was that he was rather taciturn unless you were to ask him questions but the human was practically a well of knowledge about the castle. Instead of taking him to a room and simply telling him what the room was, he explained what was done in each room and sometimes the history of the room. Lotor quickly learned that Mateo was a great storyteller, giving small, entertaining anecdotes that would earn a chuckle out him. His voice was deep with a stronger accent than his cousin, and it never escaped Lotor’s notice how his spoke at a volume much lower than the paladins as if he knew how sensitive Galra hearing was.
Of course, Lotor didn’t complain because he quickly learned how loud the Paladins tended to be upon walking in on Lance and Pidge wrestling over some sort of device in the recreational room. When the tour ended, Lotor took the chance to inquire after Mateo’s wellbeing. “That was quite the tour Mateo, but I must admit that I am worried. What happened to you earlier.”
Mateo’s eyes widened a fraction, before he gave a resigned sigh, “Sorry you had to see that. I have a medical condition. I have fits every once in a while and usually I can tell when they’re coming on but this one sort of crept up on me.”
Lotor furrowed his brows, “So you are well then?”
“Yes,” Mateo nodded, “I know it’s scary for people who see it for the first time but I’m fine.”
Lotor clasped his hands behind his back as he sighed in relief, “I cannot imagine going through that once let alone multiple times.”
Mateo waved him off, turning his head so that the prince wouldn’t see him blush, “Don’t worry about me. Us McClains are made of tougher stuff than that.”
Adorable. Lotor thought to himself as he allowed Mateo to lead him to the kitchen where Hunk was. “Hey ‘Teo - Whoa whoa whoa! What’s he doing here? Isn’t he supposed to be in jail or something?”
Mateo chuckled and gestured to the tall Galra, “Hunk, meet Prince Lotor. Shiro put me in charge of his probation while he’s here since his information has been reliable so far. I thought I’d take him to try some of your famous cuisine, Executive Chef Hunk.” Hunk puffed out his chest in pride, much to Mateo’s amusement.
“As long as I’ve got my reliable Sous Chef,” Hunk retorted as he tossed Mateo an apron. The McClain chuckled as he tied the apron around the nape of his neck and at the small of his back before turning to the sink to wash his hands. Lotor took a seat at the counter as he watched Mateo and Hunk peering into an intergalactic cookbook that the Yellow Paladin had gotten from the space mall.
The Galra prince watched with eyes full of wonder  as Mateo and Hunk worked together flawlessly. Their knives were a blur on the cutting board and movements were fluid, as if they were one being. Lotor had never known what the kitchens were like on Planet Daibazaal before he was born, since his father had forbidden any knowledge he considered unnecessary, but he liked to imagine that they were much like what he was witnessing. Lotor nearly melted as a heavenly scent eventually began to waft through the room. It made him realize how little he was being fed as his stomach let out a loud, embarrassing growl.
His ears flicked up when Mateo had set a bowl full of berries down in front of him and he watched turn his back. So, like a child, he reach out to nab one of the berries only to receive the sharp sting of a spoon to the hand from Hunk. Lotor gave him a sheepish smile and Hunk gave him a stern look but he relented and allowed the prince a single berry. Lotor was honestly confused at why he was being rewarded. His Dayak never rewarded him after discipling him. Perhaps humans have a different method of discipline than the Galra.
The finished product was a three course meal consisting of a fruit salad consisting of berries and fruits from various planets, some sort of seafood pasta, and for dessert he watched Mateo pull out a strange pan that had circular molds in them which held such sweet smelling confections. “Uh...Lotor,” the prince turned to Mateo who mimed wiping his chin and Lotor’s ears burned with his embarrassment as he mirrored the action, feeling the saliva make contact with his hand. He avoided their amused gazes as they slid a plate in his direction before serving food for themselves.
Lotor eagerly began to twist a little of the pasta onto a fork and the moment it hit his taste buds, he felt as though he was in heaven. “This is absolutely divine!” he moaned in pleasure. Hunk and Mateo shared knowing smirks as they gave each other a high five. Hunk was surprised that Lotor ate just as much as Mateo, not only going for seconds, but thirds as well. “If I could I would immediately hire you both as chefs.”
Hunk blushed and rubbed the back of his neck, “Y-you, uh think so? I’m just kind of modifying recipes I already know.”
Mateo nudged his friend with his elbow, “Just take the compliment, Hunk. You’ve got a gift.”
“If he does, then you possess it as well, Mateo,” Lotor added.
“It’s just a hobby for me. Cooking with a friend is different from cooking for a living,” Mateo shrugged before taking the last bite of his cupcake. Lotor had found himself stopping in the middle of his meal to prevent the purr swelling up in his throat, unaware of the sympathetic look that Mateo had sent him. His own throat would often grow sore while trying to suppress his contented purrs. Lance had quickly learned that rubbing his ears and running his fingers through Mateo’s hair or fur would yield purrs as loud as a motorcycle. The brunette has yet to let Mateo live it down to this day.
“What is it that you all do outside of being Paladins?” Lotor asked out of genuine curiosity.
Hunk was picking up dishes but he paused when Lotor posed the question, “This is pretty much it for me, but Mat is really into the arts.”
“Arts?” Lotor parroted.
“Hunk!” Mateo hissed, feeling heat fill his cheeks as he hid his face in his hands.
“Cute,” Lotor thought as Hunk bumped the embarrassed teen with his hip.
“I’ve read some of his fanfictions and I hate him now because I’m hooked! Especially that Batman story that you haven’t finished,” the Yellow Paladin gave his friend a baleful glare.
“I thought you got over that!”
“You left it on a cliffhanger, Mat! That’s one of the most unforgivable things you could’ve ever done!”
“It seemed like a good place to stop!”
“Well you thought wrong!”
Lotor watched the exchange with wide eyes. The pair looked like they were ready to exchange blows and the prince began to wonder if he should be trying to escape before they decided to use one of the many sharp objects in the kitchen while he possessed no weapons. “What is a cliff hanger?” Lotor spoke without thinking, surprised at himself since he usually measured his words so carefully.
Hunk continued to glare at Mateo who had turned his attention to the Galra prince that was placed in his care. “A cliffhanger is when an author ends their story on a rather suspenseful moment that leaves the readers eager to read more,”
“I call bull on that! Readers hate them and writers put them in their stories to make us suffer!” Hunk protested heatedly.
“We’re not getting into this again Hunk!” Mateo snapped but Lotor could tell that there was no real heat behind it.
Lotor chuckled at the amusing exchange. He was surprised with how easily he had relaxed in the presence of the two humans and he was beginning to believe that was the entire reason for Mateo bringing him there. The Yellow Paladin was obviously the most laid back of the Paladins and one couldn’t help but to relax in his presence. He never felt this relaxed around his own generals and yet the Paladins had succeeded where others had failed. All but one.
He pushed that thought aside. He didn’t want to think about his failures at the moments. He would much rather bask in the peace that he was so rarely afforded. He honestly hoped that he could one day call these new allies his friends and that they would return the sentiment. Mateo caught his gaze while Hunk was ranting about the horror of the cliffhanger and winked conspiratorially at the Prince before saying something that outraged the Yellow Paladin even further.
Lotor felt an uncomfortable pit in his stomach that was neither fear nor dread. It felt as though someone had set a litter of yuppers loose in his stomach. Lotor recognized this feeling and he kept his composure while he internally panicked. The prince didn’t know what exactly that meant but what he did know was that Mateo McClain would be the death of him.

Character Analysis: Rean’s Opposite (CS1/2 spoilers)
Okay this gonna be super long and maybe pointless, but Trails is very big foreshadowing and catching people by surprise so I might as get my thoughts out there.
So lots of people talk about Crow and Rean’s differences and insinuate how they're opposites. It's an easy claim to make, but I'm going to argue that while Rean sure has an opposite, it's not Crow. If anything, Rean and Crow are two sides of the same coin.  While there's some opposing traits- they are fundamentally the same deep down. You could write an entire essay on this and their relationship, it’s a very important relationship. But I'm not here to talk about Crow. I'm here to talk about Rean's true opposite.
And that is Elliot Craig.
Tumblr media
There’s a lot of ways they differ in ways that had to be intentional, so I’ll just break it down into categories.
Battle Abilities
I’ll start with the most obvious one - Rean and Elliot are opposites in fights. Rean is a melee DPS/Tank while Elliot’s a Healer/Ranged DPS. In other words, Rean is a sword fighter while Elliot’s a mage.
Their crafts are also pretty opposing too. Both of them get their buff craft early on. Rean’s boosts Strength and gives a little CP (the power meter that goes up when you give or take damage), while Elliot’s boosts defense and heals HP. Rean favors going on the offense, while Elliot favors defense. Their other crafts don’t share much overlap either:
Rean: Physical attacks with an increased chance to unbalance enemies. Meant to lay on the hurt whether it be him hitting as many enemies as possible, causing burn status (which causes extra damage each turn), or even being extra enough to summon his robot friend to step on baddies. In CS2 he even gets a special form that increases his damage output.
Elliot: Only two attack crafts that can’t unbalance enemies. Instead of laying on the hurt, he puts enemies to sleep. His other crafts are a healing craft and one that scans enemy data - in CS2 this gets upgraded to one that will decrease the enemies attack strength when he scans - once again showing he’s favors defense. He’s also the only character with a healing S-Craft.
Even their elements are opposite. Rean’s elements are Fire and Time (aka darkness), while Elliot’s are Water and Space (aka light).
Backgrounds
Obviously with the reveal near the end of CS2 of Osborne being Rean’s dad, CS3 goes more into his past and gives more to say about this. But since that hasn’t been localized, I’ll just keep it to info we know from CS1/2 to spare people spoilers.
First, it’s easy to point out their social classes. Rean is an adopted noble from the countryside while Elliot’s a commoner that grew up in a big city - you couldn’t have more opposite upbringings. Sure, Rean is a commoner by birth, but his birth dad is none other than the most powerful and well known commoner in the country. Meanwhile while Elliot’s dad is a commoner with some status being a Lt. General - it’s much more limited, and only people involved with military are familiar with the name.
Both Rean and Elliot have one sister - Elise is younger while Fiona is older. That makes the relationship dynamic fundamentally different. Both Elise and Fiona really care for their brothers, but Rean is overprotective of Elise while Fiona is the one whose overprotective of Elliot. Even their personalities are pretty different- Elise is a Tsundere through and through. Meanwhile Fiona is sweet and cheerful- but is a force of nature when she wants something. If you talk to the Craigs during the 2nd day of the school festival, you find out even Craig the Red is intimidated by her.
Speaking of fathers, let’s talk about their relationships with their living parents. Elliot’s relationship with his dad is the focus of his character arc. When Elliot first talks about him, you get the impression that he’s an aloof and intimidating figure that’s trying to push Elliot to be like him. However when you actually meet him.......the stories don’t quite line up.
Tumblr media
While Olaf IS a pushy and intimidating figure, he’s also a very loving dad that openly affectionate and tries to be there for his kids. He even makes sure to attend Elliot’s concert at the school festival despite the worsening situation in Crossbell.
Even his pushiness has more noble reasons behind it. If you choose to spend time with Elliot during the bonfire, he says this about what he realized with his dad:
"He wasn't against me going to the music academy because he was against me pursuing a career in music. He didn't want me to lock myself into it. He wanted me to be able to decide for myself just what path I wanted to follow. And more importantly, he wanted me to have the strength to do so, even if people around me tried to stand in my way..."
While Elliot says he’s just speculating, CS2 shows that he’s not far off. After reuniting with his son and seeing how strong Elliot’s become, he tells Elliot he’ll support him in whatever path he chooses. Olaf Craig wants his kids to be independent and strong enough to fight for that independence - even if it means going against him.
Another important element of Olaf's parenting? Is his honesty with his kids even when it’s an ugly truth. One example is when Fiona gets captured, the Craig kids know that if their dad has to choose between his duty and their lives- he’ll choose his duty no matter how much it hurts. Imagine a dad as loving as Olaf having to admit that to his kids. Even if it’s questionable if there’s a point of being TOO honest with your kids (hearing how your dad would let you DIE if necessary couldn’t have helped Elliot’s self-esteem issues, I’m just saying), it’s clear he feels it’s better to be honest no matter what.
Rean’s parents, adopted and biological, are the opposite. Let’s start with the Schwarzers. They are a nice and loving folk when you meet them, not at all intimidating. But they actually have their own ambitions for him, revealed mostly in the Drama CD for the CS1 Ymir trip. Rean’s mom wants Rean and Elise to get married and take over his father’s lordship - even though Rean doesn’t want that. While their intentions aren’t necessarily bad ones (though wanting him to marry his adopted sister is worrying), they're planning to use Rean for their own dreams.
And then there’s the honesty thing. The Schwarzers aren’t honest with their kids. Elise didn’t find out Rean was adopted until she was 12, and as for Rean? They pretend they don’t know who Rean’s birth parents are, but you find out in CS2 they knew all along. This exchange in the drama CD sums up their stance on ugly truths:
Rean: The reason why I want to learn more about myself is because I want to become the real Rean Schwarzer. To be proud as a member of this important family, and at the same time, as a comrade for my friends. Therefore, I must find the truth no matter what it takes. Teo Schwarzer: ...No matter how cruel the truth may be?
This shows Teo Schwarzer’s willing to lie and hide things if he feels the truth is too cruel. His stance is a sympathetic one. He wants to shield their kids from the ugly truths as many parents are tempted to do. But in the end, it just ends up hurting their relationship with Rean more than anything else.
But at least the Schwarzer’s hearts are in the right place, unlike that asshole of a biological dad. Osborne isn’t even subtle about his willingness to use his own son for his ambitions. The moment the civil war ends, he throws his son into helping him conquer Crossbell. As for not being honest, well the fact he hid his identity as Rean’s father until Rean remembered something says it all. While Olaf is raising his kids to be independent adults with a full understanding of the world, Osborne sees his son as a tool that’s on a need-to-know basis.
Personality
It’s pretty easy to see where Elliot and Rean differ in personality. While Elliot’s timid, Rean’s outspoken. Rean enjoys fighting, Elliot would rather play music. Rean notices girls on several occasions, Elliot notices the guys more during swim class. Rean is regularly in the center of attention, Elliot is regularly overlooked both in game, and by fans. The list goes on about how their personalities differ, but there’s one major theme:
If there’s one thing everyone knows about Elliot it’s that he’s obsessive about music. He practices constantly, he’s a perfectionist, his room is full music stuff- literally he’s a stone throw away from being an Ace Attorney character his obsession is so strong. But if you look carefully, it isn’t so much about music as he’s someone who when he devotes himself to something, he does it at 200%. In the last dorm visit while most characters express something vague like “our paths will cross again” or agreements to meet up sometime if you pick them for their closest bond, Elliot says this:
Tumblr media
In other words, Elliot is the one character that REFUSES to break up or put his relationship on hold. He’s too devoted. Notably, you get his first S-Craft only after he decides he’s glad to be at Thors and becomes determined not fall behind everyone.
Rean on the other hand is a drifter that doesn’t commit. He studied 8 Leaves, but he stopped after beginner’s rank. He learned the lute, but he wasn’t serious about it and fell out of practice. He never joins a club (seriously Rean would’ve it killed you to join Fishing Club??). At the end of CS2 when it comes time for Class VII to separate so they can pursue their own goals -- Rean doesn’t really have one, so he stays at Thors, because it’s the only place he ever felt like he belonged.
Character Arcs
Let’s start with where Elliot and Rean were at the start of CS1
Elliot: Pressured to be in the military by his father. Not confident, and a bit at a loss at what his future would be.
Rean: Enrolling in Thors despite it putting his parents out. Fairly confident in pursuing his plan of easing his perceived family’s burden after graduation.
Now look at the end of CS2 where they were at:
Elliot: Enrolling in the Music Academy despite his father’s original wishes. Armed with confidence, he committed to a plan to find a way to use music to help the world.
Rean: Pressured to be in the military by his father. Confidence shaken, at a real loss about his future.
The situations are different obviously, but they basically switched places over the course of two games.  Generally speaking when stories do that, it’s intentional for some reason or another.
What does it all Mean?
Truthfully? It might mean nothing. Or it might not.
It’s impossible to say until CS3 and 4 get released and localized. Maybe Elliot will have an important role to play in the Erebonia arc, or maybe there was a plan and they scrapped it. Or maybe it’s a red herring. With the Trails series, it is hard to tell because they really do like to give hints along the way that you don’t pick up until later.
But I do believe it’s not all coincidental. For one, in the character line-ups Elliot is almost always listed right after Alisa (the designated main heroine) in terms of importance. And second?
Tumblr media
They outright say it in the game.
Thank you all 2 people that read this, this has been my TED talk.

Top 10 Most Underrated K-pop Songs of 2017 (OST Edition)
Tumblr media
2017 has come and gone before we knew it.
Continuing with the K-Pop Timeout Tradition (see 2016 Ver) of listing the Top 10 Most Underrated K-Pop Songs because all the other sites are just bothered with the Top 10 that pretty much everyone will have heard of/have fan wars over, below are our top 10 picks of songs that did not rank high but deserves your attention! We already made posts for Top 10 Underrated Idol tracks and Top 10 Underrated Artist tracks. Now we bring to you the Top 10 underrated K-Drama OSTs for the first time in 2017!
This is in alphabetic order NOT order of awesomeness because all of them are awesome. Also, all MVs are linked in the song titles because Tumblr won’t let me share that many videos in one post.
Bestie U Ji ft. andup “Alive” (tvN’s Circle)
Tumblr media
Bestie’s U Ji is one of the most underrated K-Pop main vocalists and she screams for you guys to stop sleeping on her in this amazing song. Her soulful voice and wide vocal range are fully utilized in “Alive”, the OST for tvN’s sci-fi drama “Circle”, especially in the chorus bass drop. andup’s rap also works perfectly with the sense of urgency illustrated throughout the track. If you want a RnB inspired pop banger like stuff by Ailee and Hyorin, check out “Alive”!
Crude Play “Peter Pan” (tvN’s The Liar and His Lover)
Tumblr media
Not only is “The Liar and His Lover” an underrated drama, so are the songs from the show. Honestly, if Crude Play were a real group, they should be winning K-Pop awards left and right because this band from the drama slays. Their playful pop-rock style is best illustrated specifically in the OST “Peter Pan”, which features two real idols - UNIQ’s Sungjoo’s charismatic vocals and former LUNAFLY’s Teo’s stable singing. If you are a fan of CN Blue and N.Flying, you are going to love “Peter Pan”!
HA:TFELT, SURAN & Kim Bohyung “Cross Country” (MBC every1’s Cross Country)
Tumblr media
So technically this is an OST for a variety show and not a K-Drama but I mean it’s an OST list and this song is too amazing not to put in. Featuring three of K-Pops very best female vocalists HA:TFELT (former Wonder Girl’s member Yeeun), SURAN and Kim Bohyung (former SPICA member), you know this track is going to slay before even listening to it. Featuring two unique vocalists and one power vocal, the song is a mix of alternative RnB and neo-soul which is so damn good. If you love anything from indie vocal queens like SURAN, Heize, and Hoody, this song is the stuff of dreams.
Jeong Yewon & Jeon Taewon from Martin Smith “Why Did You” (Naver TV’s Seventeen)
Tumblr media
Although it’s an OST from a web series, “Why Did You” is definitely able to compete and even outcompete some TV series OSTs. You know the butterflies you feel in your stomach and uncontrollable heartbeat when you have a crush. This is what the song gives you, which is fitting since the web series is about young love. It is super sweet and light, featuring two amazing indie vocalists. If you love songs Baek Ah Yeon puts out, this song is perfect for you.
Kim Nayoung “I’m Ok” (MBC’s Ruler: Master of the Mask)
Tumblr media
Every year there is an amazing historical OST that makes you want to cry and feel dramatic af. There are many this year but the one that did not get the attention it deserved was Kim Nayoung’s “I’m Ok,” which is odd since her previous “Descendants of the Sun” OST sold a lot. Also, not only does it fit all the melodramatic checkboxes, it also has such a unique chord progression. Just when you think it’s going one way, it goes another. Even the chorus has some interestingly pleasing contradicting tonalities. If you want the perfect background music to look out of a car window on a rainy day and star in your own dramatic MV, turn up the volume for “I’m Ok”!
Lee Boram “Painful” (KBS2 The Secret of My Love)
Tumblr media
Continuing down the melodrama OST train, Lee Boram’s “Painful” is another one that is underrated this year. This former queen who dished out memorable OSTs for legendary dramas like “Full House” and “Playful Kiss” is back at it again with this memorable track. As an ex-member of vocal queens Seeya, Lee Boram clearly showcases her ability to display sorrowful emotions in her voice in this Latin-infused track. If you are a fan of early 00s OSTs, this song will bring you back to those feels!
NiiHWA “What I Want” (KBS2 Mad Dog)
Tumblr media
Tropical house and dancehall have definitely influenced this year’s mainstream K-Pop and they have also made their mark in K-Dramaland as seen in NiiHWA’s “What I Want” and damn this song is a major BOP, probably one of the best K-Drama OSTs of the year. Not only is it addictive, with the “really right now really really right now” line that works perfectly with the beat but the song also perfectly fits the action-packed feel of the drama. If you like stuff from K.A.R.D and Clean Bandit, check out this track!
Park Boram “Isn’t She Lovely” (tvN’s Introverted Boss)
Tumblr media
Soothing OSTs are always a great choice to wind down at the end of a long day and Park Boram’s “Isn’t She Lovely” is that type of song. With a slow intro that sounds almost like the lyrics are being spoken to you, the song transitions smoothly into an addictive chorus that lightly asks “Isn’t She Lovely?” which fits the baby steps the male lead of the series takes to exit his introverted shell. If you are a fan of indie groups like Standing Egg and Okdal, you will enjoy this song!
Roiii “You Are the World of Me” (OCN’s My Secret Romance)
Tumblr media
OCN made a good choice of casting two amazing vocalists in the lead roles of the channel’s first ever rom-com series because that means endless wonderful OSTs from the leads. Actor Sunghoon reveals his great voice under his DJ name Roiii in “You Are the World of Me”. The song is a catchy rom-com track to begin with, reminiscent of Korean dating show tvN’s The Romantic’s addictive af OST, but Sunghoon’s unique deeper tone makes it all the more memorable. If you love an actor with good singing abilities like Kim Soohyun and Ji Chang Wook, check out Sunghoon’s vocals in “You Are the World of Me”!
WINNER Kang Seungyoon & MINO “The Door” (tvN’s Prison Playbook)
Tumblr media
This is an OST by WINNER members produced by Zico - of course it’s a banger! But it seems like most K-Pop fans do not know Kang Seungyoon and MINO of WINNER put out an OST because the MV views are pretty sad for YG standards. The talented singers and producers perfectly capture the hopelessness felt in prison with this piece through its simplicity, with the hip-hop inspired beat solely executed on the piano and blending with their unique voices. If you are a YG stan and BBC, time to show this song some love!

Teodosius Deluca was born in Chicago's wealthy North Shore suburbs and grew up in a life of luxury as the son of pretentious parents. He was a very observant boy, and soon realized that they were always hiding things, and keeping secrets. They were distant and dishonest, and at first it troubled little Teo. When Teo turned 8, his father disappeared. No one knew where he'd gone and what his motives were. Years went by, and Teo concluded that his dad was gone forever and never returning. It was at this time that his father's friends and colleagues began visiting his mother, having secret meetings in the house's lounge.
These meetings caused Mother's sanity to deteriorate over time, until she became erratic, babbling about how the thoughts in her head weren't her own, and her memories were all planted there by otherworldly powers. Several times she attacked Teo in hysterical fits, until Teo found a spot in the house she couldn't access. It was an extra-dimensional space that was "locked," until Father's DNA came to activate the portal- no problem for his son to open it up. This space was like a library-workshop, with ancient books and mystic tools for occult experiments. Teo spent hours in this space, pouring over his father's notes and learning much about magic. Time flowed slowly in this dimension; one hour in the office was a minute outside, so his knowledge grew quickly. He began to have dreams about a regal goddess called the Ruby Sorceress. Teo figured she was somehow refining his knowledge of magic, and teaching him remotely about esoteric concepts; he seemed to know these things, but on a subconscious level only. In his father's notes, Teo learned more about his dad's involvement with  a widespread cult called the Beloved. And the Beloved were connected to a single fraternity: Epsilon Alpha, one of the most highly selective fraternities in the nation.
Eventually, Teo's mother grew more and more violent with her fits of rage. She came after Teo with a butcher knife, and in a panic, Teo struck her down with necromantic energies. As she lay dying as if exposed to radiation, she shrieked at him- "MONSTER! You did this to me! Monster! Monster! You're not my son! You're not real! None of this is real! LIAR! Imposter! MONSTER!" The words stung Teo, and he spent months grieving after she was given a proper burial.
Teo applied for college, and because he was a legacy, he easily got into Epsilon Alpha. One night after settling into the frat, Teo was abducted and taken to the basement, where he woke up naked and chained to a table and brought into the Beloved. His initiation rite was to recieve a tattoo- a pentagram-shaped flaming skull in black; the symbol of the Ruby Sorceress herself. Traditionally, these are hidden in hard-to-spot places like the sole of the foot, the flank under the armpit, or the fold of the hip. Teo's aptitude for swimming (and proclivity for speedos) meant he got his on the hip.
On the new moon after being initiated, Teo met with the Ruby Sorceress again. She revealed herself as Wee Jas, the Lady Protector of the afterlife and the mystical energies that flow within it. She is the arbiter of order, and the overseer of all things magic. She charged Teo, like his father before him, with destroying the blasphemous cult of the Beloved from within. Unlike the traditional church of Wee Jas (called the Jasadin), the Beloved did not bring glory to, and sing the praises of their mistress, but instead used Wee Jas's power to selfishly advance themselves. The Beloved were focused on partying, enhancing their grades, conning people into fucking or other hedonistic activities, and otherwise made asses of themselves, but with magic. Her magic. Their lives were forfeit.
Teo became a full-fledged priest of the Jasadin that day, and slowly wormed his way through the Beloved, bringing down the powerful, and turning members against each other. Teo's ruse was eventually discovered, and after an ambush involving a stray bullet with an artifact ruby, Teo was sucked into an alternate dimension. It would be one of several over the next few years as Teo traveled various worlds on his crusade. Teo found cells of the Beloved in each world, but the Jasadin were present as well. And thus, the struggle continues.
Trivia: 1.) Teo the cleric is the third version of this character, because when I make character concepts, they don't always fit neatly into Dungeons and Dragons class system. Teo started off as an arcane trickster rogue, and his second version was a divine soul sorcerer. Now he's an arcane cleric, and it fits him best.
2.) I had written out Teo's spells' verbal components on flashcards for each time he cast them. Although these got lost somewhere. It's been a long time. All of his non-cantrip, high magic spells start with the same two words, though- "Ohorella Baltan," which in Enochian means "I have made a law."
3.) If Teo's ability scores seem high, you can blame my Ok Boomer dungeon master- he "required" that we roll 5d6 for our ability scores, because he openly stated that he was trying to kill us. In the end, his campaign collapsed because we moved forward at a snail's pace because we did not trust our DM to be impartial and/or fair in his rulings. Don't be like my Ok Boomer dungeon master. Games should be fun, not stressful.
4.) The original-original concept of Teo was half-jokingly to dip into "edgelord" character territory. Teo would worship a god of death and darkness and Hot Topic stuff, and send souls to his dark master while jamming to Lincoln Park. Anyway, Researching deities came up with Wee Jas, an ancient goddess (first published in 1983) of death, magic, and.... high fashion! It was a perfect fit, and having her as a patron deity really changed Teo's attitude. She commands her people to police the gateway between life and death, and look good while doing it. How can you say no to that?
