Tenka Touitsu Koi no Ran: Love Ballad ~Hana no Utage~ Review
a.k.a. the worst cafe collaboration I have ever been to in terms of drinks that ended up tasting like water.
I have very low standards when it comes to cafe collaborations, as it’s all about the aesthetics with the drinks and the food, and not the taste.
What I didn’t realize was that they would actually followed through with the taste not being up to par, while the desserts like zunda and zenzai/oshiruko were actually decent enough to make me forget how horrible the drinks were.
As I did not want to go alone, I dragged a friend with me for this KoiRan Cafe event, and said friend has zero idea about the game itself. She knows I blab about my biases at times because I love Japanese history, but she has very little knowledge about KoiRan, the settings, and the dudes involved in the series.
The cafe was situated in a quiet area of Omotesando, and it wasn’t too difficult to find.
Upon getting there, we were surprised to find a crowd of girls outside the cafe. I would later find out that they were queuing to buy food and drinks, and that the cafe area itself wasn’t that crowded despite being Day 1.
Immediately, I took this photo for my friend since she’s an Ieyasu fan
When we were led in, we were given these random square illustrations of the characters.
I have shit luck with random draws and out of all the possible characters that could be given to me, it just had to be these two.
When it came to buying food and drinks, we were called by batches over the microphone.
When it was our turn, we could buy up to two drinks per person, with one of the drinks being free, while the other was to be paid for. People could only buy one set menu as well, so it really is better to go together with a friend if you don’t want to waste so much time and money.
While queuing, we were handed this menu:
There was a notice on Kojuurou’s soy milk tea drink:
[For those who can’t decipher the kanji, they’re asking pregnant women or women who suspect they’re pregnant to refrain from ordering his drink.]
Got my Masamune and Ieyasu drinks, as well as the Oda Army platter, while my friend ordered Kojuurou’s soy milk tea and the Date Army dessert platter.
[Horror stories incoming]
The drinks were so disgusting, I couldn’t even finish the “mango lassi”.
Maybe I have high standards, or maybe because my taste buds actually know how mango lassi is supposed to taste like, but holy shit, they didn’t even make any efforts to make it taste decent.
The green apple soda barely had any green apple flavoring in it, as you can see from the photo. It was all carbonated soda in its bitter entirety.
The worst offender of them all happened to be the Kojuurou Soy Milk Tea. As I have mentioned in an earlier post, we might as well have bought premium JPY700 colored water. It was that tasteless and disgusting.
While we were discussing how weird the drinks were, they announced that we could start buying goods.
More photos:
Paper ema (I brought home mine)
Second illustration we’ve seen Masamune use his left hand. So he’s really left-handed?!
As written below, the area is a place to hang the ema:
After getting some of my stuff, we waited for our food to arrive.
The onigiri was 95% rice, 3% nori, and 2% okaka/bonito. Not enjoyable at all, though my friend gushed that the miso soup was the most amazing thing she has tasted in the cafe.
I had low hopes for these desserts to even taste decent, but to my surprise, if one has not eaten zunda mochi from Sendai or zenzai/oshiruko from Mihashi, you would think this was the best ever dessert.
I’m no zunda mochi expert, but I know what tastes good and what doesn’t.
It was decent enough to satisfy the zunda mochi cravings I’ve been having.
The oshiruko wasn’t that warm anymore when it got to our table but wasn’t disgustingly too sweet.
One of the nicest things I’ve gotten out of this would be Ieyasu’s acrylic stand.
Fun fact: 80% of the girls in the cafe were all gushing about him, with one of the girls beside my friend carrying around an Ieyasu itabag.
Around 40 minutes before closing time, we got told that it was closing time, and people who wanted food and drinks needed to order as soon as possible.
This time around, I got an Inuchiyo drink.
Not surprisingly, it tasted disgusting.
Anyway, here’s some palate cleanser:
For all my disgust, trash-talking, and ranting for tonight, I would actually give this cafe another chance. As this is only Day 1 of the collab, there were bound to be mistakes and a lot of trial and error.
My friend and I will be going on another day just to see if there will be actual improvements.
If not, then Voltage better shape up or get a more decent cafe partner for their series’ future cafe collaborations.
