To embrace this coming, holiday season. I have chosen to draw some festive fanart. Temiree's Nes from Deviantart dressed in Dwayne Johnson's outfit in 'Red One'. Downright fun drawing to do, and I'm proud of how it's turned out. ^^
If you didn't see in the last sentence, I drew fanart of someone's character. Link to the first page of the artist's comic I'm talking about gonna be in the comments. Once it's posted up for tomorrow morning. ♥
Lemme know if you're going to see "Red One" when it comes out! 🎄 What you think of the drawing. And all of you have a Merry Christmas when it arrives!

Where did Ryan even find a flail?
In this Scene
A bit of fanart of @temiree’s characters Nes Irwin the kangaroo and Ryan the raccoon getting up to some…interesting shenanigans at my character Leo King the lion’s MMA gym—much to poor NES’s chagrin.
Nes finally convinced Ryan to try boxing, so while he was in town for a fight he brought Ryan along to Leo’s gym to give it a try. Unfortunately, Ryan’s not quite keen on the idea of getting punched, but neither is he about to tuck tail and run. So how does he protect himself?
Well, as only a raccoon who chugs a bottle of maple syrup on Canada Day can :)
Behind the Scenes
I’d come up with the idea this idea for this scene while back and really, really wanted to draw it, but was feeling too perfectionistic about it to actually attempt it. I wanted the picture to turn out exactly as I imagined, do justice to a couple of really fun characters, and be funny. But I reminded myself that perfection isn’t the goal—I draw art for fun, and if that means my art has room to improve, so be it. That shouldn’t stop me from trying to draw what I want now—how else will I improve and stay motivated? In the end, though, I think I did manage to capture what I was imagining, and I hope you all enjoy it too.
And @temiree, keep up the good work—you are continuously an inspiration for many character artists, and Little Runt is an entertaining comic.

Round 1 Poll 64
hourglass: 「hourglass is a pop-like song written, performed, and produced by one person: yacine! Utilizing a more dream-like feeling in the music production, the lyrics share what's it's like to go through day by day and night by night while bearing the stresses of daily living. yacine! also references their faith as a Muslim person, "Inshallah you'll guide me / Inshallah you'll listen" which represents the faith that helps guide them through their day-by-day.
Also, yacine! is just criminally under discovered as a whole. Imo, she deserves way much more views/listens. (Also, yacine! uses any pronouns!)」

Another tag game! This time from @meg-noel-art and @finrays (at least... it seems like it’s the same one? :v)
Favorite Color: Blue!
Currently Reading: About to start volume 12 in my run through the TMNT IDW Collections. Volume 11 had Triceraton POV in it so I enjoyed that immensely. I continue to enjoy the creative ways they integrate elements from previous TMNT incarnations into their ongoing one. :]
Last Song: The Beast Beneath the Waves... love love love Nolan’s lutren sharkhunter sea shanty, I am still obsessed sorry.
Currently Watching: My Adventures With Superman, and recently started What We Do in the Shadows! Enjoying both so far!
Last movie: Uuuh. It’s actually been a hot minute and I honestly can’t remember. Surely it wasn’t the Netflix Monster Hunter movie...? :S At any rate, I’m trying to push my butt out of the house to watch one of several new movies and haven’t been successful yet.
Currently working on: mostly Western Deep stuff, less fun comic art and more “necessary book-making logistics” type stuff. Also a smattering of fan projects of varying secrecy.
Current Obsession: my brain has actually broken and is attempting to be obsessed with like 4-5 different things at once, which means I’ve actually been way too fractured lately to like... turn around and make anything about it. I can also feel myself self-censoring a bit because I feel so unhinged and random with all this stuff, heheh
No-pressure tags: I will... buck my usual refusal and toss a couple out - @capybonara and @temiree - but feel free to ignore if you’re too busy or just don’t wanna!
#tag game#words#hopefully back to proper arting soon#but we can play silly goofy tumblr games in the meantime

The Trouble with Dream Sequences
Every writer knows the pain of getting stuck on a scene. It happens for many reasons - lack of planning, unclear purpose, the idea not working as well on paper as it did in your head, having a start and end but no idea how to connect them… the list goes on. But no medium struggles with this harder than the webcomic.
The problem with webcomics is that they are serials. And most webcomic authors, I’ve found, don’t fully plan longer sequences before starting them. When a novelist or screenwriter gets stuck in a scene, they can pause and really troubleshoot it until it is ready. This also gives them the ability to restructure the larger story if needed. But with webcomics, once you publish a page, you’re committed to whatever choices you made.
Often, the causes of a bad scene in a webcomic are deep and complex, and they take a lot of effort to untangle (yeah, I haven’t forgotten about you Caelum Sky. That follow up post will come in time). But today, I want to show you a much simpler case, where the cause is straightforward and the options the writer had to fix it were more clear cut. This is the story of Little Runt.
FURRY CREED
Little Runt is a sports drama by @temiree about a young up and coming boxer named Ness who has to confront the ghosts of his past. The story opens with Ness about to fight his first pay-per-view event. It sets up all of the important plot points: Ness’s dad was an undefeated champion who has since passed, which has caused Ness to have some kind of a complex. He wants to be as great as his father was, but he’s way too stuck in his own head about everything. His mother is unable to make it to the match, blaming the weather (though I get the sense this has happened before). When he gets in the ring, he meets his opponent, Shadow, and it is clear right away that these two have some kind of bad past.
And then the fight begins. And it is glorious.
Here is what’s so great about Little Runt: it’s one of the best looking webcomics out there. Every page in this opening is intricately colored and detailed, and there’s a film grain shader applied on top which adds to the intense, cinematic atmosphere. The fight is brilliantly paced, with jagged panels of complex action punctuated with these three-panel dialogue pages that mimic a wide-screen film. The dialogue is well-done too, never getting in the way of the action while giving the reader just enough necessary information to truly understand all the hard things Ness is feeling. It’s the perfect example of “show, don’t tell”.
You might be wondering why I’d want to give such high praise to something I am about to criticize. You need to know what makes this webcomic work, so that when it stops working you will understand exactly what has gone wrong. I also want you to see that, despite the troubles that are about to come, this webcomic isn’t bad, and still has great potential. I can’t say the same for many other troubled webcomics.
At the end of the fight, we learn a bit more about these characters’ past. There is an awkward exchange of dialogue, and Shadow hints that he deeply regrets whatever happened in their past. That throws Ness off just enough that he gets KO’d hard. We then go to a brief dream sequence - Ness is in the locker room, being comforted by his dead dad Taylor. Taylor pulls out his record book, and Ness discovers that his father wasn’t an undefeated champion after all - he was an all-time great, but he lost almost as much as he won. Then, Ness is ripped out of it before he can truly comprehend it all.
Dream sequences are difficult to do right - I’ve critiqued plenty of bad dream sequences in workshops, and I’m struggling to put one together right now for one of my projects - but this is probably the best way to handle it. Make it quick, focus on the emotions, and smoothly transition to the next story beat.
THE SAD BEIGE BABY AFTERLIFE
The next few sequences are mostly exposition - Ness confronts his mom about her lying to him about his dad’s record, he reads a letter from Shadow asking to meet up later to talk about the past, and he dozes off while watching an old home movie of him training with his dad. That last one is actually a touching scene, and we finally really get to see what Ness’s problem truly is.
And then, on page 49, Little Runt’s endless scene begins. It’s another dream sequence, which is already a bad sign. Like I said, dream sequences are hard, and another reason why they are hard is that they can disrupt the tone and structure of the story. At its worst, a poorly placed dream sequence can stop the momentum of a narrative entirely. The first page of this dream sequence was published in December 2020, and as of November 2024, it is still not finished.
Like the last dream sequence, Ness again meets his dad, but this time it is in a featureless beige void. And then the two of them talk… and talk… and TALK. Most of the stuff they talk about was just covered in the previous scene, meaning that the conversation is mostly redundant. It’s not moving the story forward, it's not developing the characters, it's just spinning its wheels.
Then, the scene darkens, and Ness confronts his own insecurity, which takes the form of a badly beaten version of himself. It’s a more interesting scene visually, and I could see it being a very powerful moment. The problem is that character development moments like this have to be earned, and we aren’t far enough in the story for this one to work.
Here’s another problem with dream sequences - they aren’t consequential. The things that characters experience in real life drive their development, and dream sequences like this only work if they highlight that. Dreams don’t work when they have to do all of the heavy lifting. Ness hasn’t worked on himself just yet, so this moment where he suddenly comes to terms with himself seems sudden and unearned.
But, the moment is well-designed and well-executed even if it isn’t well–placed. This part of the scene ends with a nice lighting effect where he hugs his insecurities, and ultimately ends up hugging himself. When we got to this point in around 2022, I felt that the dream sequence, if not perfect, had wrapped up just fine and the author was in a good position to continue the narrative. But then the dream sequence kept going.
A MISSED EXIT
The next five pages were more dialogue, re-treading points that had already been covered. I was confused when I read it - why are they still talking? Their story beats are already covered? Why are we going back to this? From what I remember, the author felt at this time that he was stuck in the scene and unsure of where he was going. He had an opportunity to finish the sequence on page 72, but he missed his exit. At this point, we’ve had two characters talking in a void with little action for 18 months. Something had to change.
The next part of the dream sequence takes us back to the ring, where Taylor helps Ness confront Shadow. He’s brought back the action, style, and emotion that made this webcomic work, but it is still in a dream and without real consequence. It’s still not as impactful as it could be. And, as of November 2024, this is where the webcomic stands, in the middle of a fake fight scene.
So, what are the solutions? First, let’s imagine we could rebuild the story from the ground up. What should be changed if we could turn back time? Despite the issues that come with dream sequences, I think that it works knowing the context that Ness is both concussed and grief-stricken. But a better route would have been to separate each “part” of this dream into smaller, more focused sequences, with real story events happening in between. I would also have the first two parts of the sequence take place wherever Ness is when he enters the sequence. Instead of a void, Taylor could appear in the attic behind Ness. That would keep things visually interesting and allow for more “stage business”.
What could be done in between these sequences? I would have loved to change perspectives for a bit to follow Shadow after the fight. Think about his situation: he’s got all these regrets, and just when he starts to take the steps to make amends with the person he harmed, he instead badly hurt and humiliated him in a packed stadium and on TV. You can even see at the end of the opening sequence just how guilty he feels. I look forward to seeing their eventual meeting, whenever it happens.
But we can’t change the past, so how could this be fixed going forward? Well, moving to another fight scene, even if it isn’t real, was a good first step. But at this point, I’d figure out where the next possible exit is and take it. Now that I’ve re-read this sequence in one go for this review, it doesn’t feel nearly as slow as when it was published, but it has to end for this story to progress. Looking at where things stand as of Page 107, I doubt this would take more than 10 pages to wrap up.
After this sequence is done, Taylor could reappear later, but never in another full dream. Ness could hear his father’s voice in his head as he’s talking with Shadow, or imagine him cheering him on from an empty seat at his next fight.
Finally, whatever the next sequence is, I would go into it with a firm page limit in mind and determine exactly what story beats I want to cover. In my experience, harder limits like this force you to better plan, as you have to either add narrative development or trim excess to hit the target. This inevitably makes sequences stronger and more focused. I'd even pre-script the entire sequence in a screenwriting software - most professional screenwriting platforms now have a "graphic novel" feature that lets you quickly plan a sequence panel-for-panel.
CONCLUSION
Little Runt is a webcomic with great promise, and despite running into a rough patch, the author is taking the necessary steps to get it back on track and make it live up to its full potential. Seeing how this webcomic struggled helped me better appreciate the importance of backwards-planning a narrative and the different possible ways that a draft could be restructured or reimagined. And I hope that, whatever medium you create in, you have learned something from this too.
And, lastly, if you haven't read Little Runt yet, I highly recommend that you check it out. You can find it here on Tumblr and on DeviantArt.

Another sketch from the backlog.
I bought my sketchbook years ago at a thrift shop and it was mostly empty except for a few children's crayon drawings. I've decided that I didn't want to waste paper and, in my own way, honor whoever had the sketchbook first, so whenever I encounter a crayon drawing I try to incorporate it into a larger piece of art. In this case, I found a drawing of some kind of furry creature. As it was the most complete crayon picture in the sketchbook, I decided to frame it, and since it reminded me of an otter, I decided that I would draw some fanart of @temiree appreciating it. Go check out his comic, Little Runt, by the way.
