what is PANDAS? /gq
This is a very long infodump but here’s my story!
It stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections! Basically when I was 10, I got a normal case of strep throat. The same kind that every kid gets in childhood. I got on antibiotics and felt better, but overnight (literally overnight. I was completely fine the night before and then it started February 22nd 2016) I started having SEVERE. OCD and anxiety symptoms. It was debilitating. I couldn’t eat, sleep, or function. I was having panic attacks, constant obsessions and compulsions, terrifying intrusive thoughts, and hallucinations. I also started developing tics. I was 10 and it happened overnight, so it wasn’t likely obsessive compulsive disorder or Tourette’s, especially because I didn’t have a family history of those things.
After multiple doctors, a nurse practitioner finally thought to test me for strep antibodies and it was positive. I got started on high dose antibiotics that destroyed my teeth and digestive system, but after 11 months I was still getting strep throat every other week, which would cause me to flare.
At 11, I got my tonsils out, and it helped a bit, but then I started losing function in other areas. At that point, it had spread to my entire brain and it turned into severe encephalitis. I had constant violent tics, debilitating mental illness symptoms, and I was losing the ability to walk and talk. The right side of my body was completely useless and the left side wasn’t much better. I couldn’t talk without a stutter, aphasia, and forgetting how to speak.
At age 12, I got my first bought of IVIG, which helped a little bit, but unfortunately we had shitty health insurance at the time and they wouldn’t cover any more even though I was getting worse by the day. At this point we didn’t know I had encephalitis, we thought I only had PANDAS and PANDAS wouldn’t cause that severe of a reaction on its own. So it was extremely scary. They were testing me for everything they knew, but encephalitis, especially in kids that young, wasn’t super well researched at the time. I had countless tests and everything was coming back “clean”.
Eventually, my mom and I went to every doctor in California that would see us. Even the ones not covered by insurance. At 12, since we saw every neurologist and rheumatologist that would see me in our state, we went to Arizona to see a PANDAS specialist. She recommended me a lot of herbal medications that kept me alive and helped a lot, but since she was in a different state, she couldn’t prescribe any actual medication. But those herbal medications kept me going long enough. That’s when we found out I also had fibromyalgia and my thyroid had failed as a side effect of the encephalitis.
When I was 13, I saw a doctor who diagnosed me with POTS, prescribed me POTS medication, and did a lot of tests to try and find out WHY I was losing the ability to walk and talk. She did a nerve conduction test, MRIs, CTs, and a test where they removed huge chunks of my flesh and tested the nerves (idk what it was called?) however there was no baseline for someone my age for any of the things she was testing for, so we only had a set baseline for if things got worse.
When I was 13, almost 14, I couldn’t walk or stand without a cane, even with a cane I couldn’t walk for very long, and I was very nearly at the point where I needed a wheelchair full time. My speech and tics were terrible, I remember barely even being able to think or process what was happening because the brain inflammation was so severe. I FINALLY got in with a rheumatologist at UCLA who specialized in PANDAS, and he finally was able to get insurance to pay for a years worth of IVIG.
I was on high dose IVIG for a year, and it saved my life. Very slowly, I got better. My OCD stopped, I could talk again, my tics stopped, and I very slowly got back feeling in my body. I couldn’t afford speech therapy or physical therapy at the time, so I had to teach myself how to walk and talk again. 5 years later, I have 100% feeling and function in my right arm, and I can feel most of my right leg, except for my foot and random patches on my thigh and calf. I talk fine most of the time, but if I’m tired, I’ll start slurring my words and occasionally words for things will just. Slip out of my brain and I can’t remember them so I have to improvise. (Yesterday the word for pencil disappeared from my brain so I asked my sister for “the thing that’s like a pen but is gray and you can erase it”)

this is just about my health and probably won’t be interesting to anyone else
for literally years I had a sinus infection that would not go away for anything like I tried so many things and nothing fixed it. and it was mostly just on the right side of my head and I thought maybe it was an infected tooth or an ear infection so I tried to attack it from all three directions and it still didn’t go away. had a tooth removed and still nothing. and it got better when I moved to California but still didn’t go away like it just got to a point I could live with it and pretty much ignore it. and may have done that forever except I started to notice my face was asymmetrical when it never had been before and then I noticed my jaw muscle on the left side is now WAY bigger than the one on my right. well duh bc I’ve been chewing all my food on the left side of my mouth for years now bc the right side was always in pain. and so now the left side of my face is a completely different worse shape than my right like you cannot see my beautiful bone structure At All and so obviously I tried to fix it by using my right side more. that was on Monday and literally instantly as soon as I did that I got a sinus headache and my jaw started hurting and my ear and head started hurting and even my NECK on that side started hurting which never happened before. and now guess what I’m home missing work bc I have a really bad sinus infection just like clockwork. and I won’t be able to see any kind of a doctor or dentist until January at the earliest bc I have no insurance + no money but I cannot live in pain and UGLY until then so I did the thing you should never do and googled my symptoms hoping to stay on top of the problem. wow this is such a Virgo post. anyway. well everything seems to point to fucking TMJ which is annoying bc I know my brother had that. but worse than annoying everything I read SCARED me tbh especially when I went on Reddit and found a subreddit of people with incurable pain who talk about how dying would be better than suffering this and it only gets worse and there’s no real cure except very expensive jaw surgery and like I know that’s Reddit and everyone there is addicted to their own misery in my rational mind i KNOW that but it’s still scary. and I found physical therapy exercises online too and I’ve been doing them and I can pretty easily make my jaw line up the way it’s supposed to but the thing is the right alignment is what hurts me. the only thing that doesn’t hurt is moving my jaw all the way over to the left and only using the left side of my mouth and that’s what’s making me ugly in the first place. it almost feels like the teeth on the right side of my mouth are longer than the ones on the left?? so when my jaw lines up my teeth don’t and vice versa. anyway I Don’t know how to fix this. and I have less than zero faith that even if I do get in to see someone it’ll get fixed bc in my experience doctors haven’t ever taken me seriously. and everyone online is like YOU CAN’T SEE A REGULAR DENTIST FOR THIS YOU NEED TO SEE THESE 6 SPECIALISTS INSTEAD well I don’t know if I can afford that or even How to go about seeing all those people and if it means jumping through a lot of hoops to get referrals how the fuck am I supposed to do That. and according to what I’ve been reading this also might be the cause of my bad posture and sleep problems and depression and I can’t do anything about it for at Least two months and maybe not ever. and my jaw hurts while I’m typing this and it feels like I have a phantom hurting tooth where the tooth I got removed that probably wasn’t even infected was. and I can look forward to a long future of suffering and being ugly and also being broke. and I kind of want to just break my own jaw

From Consultation to Recovery: Dental Implants in Beverly Hills
In the heart of one of the world's most glamorous cities, a new era of dental care is transforming smiles and restoring confidence. Beverly Hills, renowned for its pursuit of perfection, has become a hub for innovative dental solutions, with dental implants leading the charge. This comprehensive guide will take you on a journey through the process of receiving Dental implant in Beverly Hills in this iconic California locale, from the initial consultation to the final stages of recovery.
The Importance of Dental Implants
Tooth loss can have a profound impact on an individual's quality of life, affecting everything from their ability to eat comfortably to their self-esteem. Dental implants offer a permanent and natural-looking solution, restoring both the form and function of missing teeth. By integrating seamlessly with the jawbone, these titanium posts provide a sturdy foundation for replacement teeth, allowing patients to enjoy all the benefits of a complete, healthy smile.
The Dental Implant Consultation
The journey to a rejuvenated smile begins with a comprehensive consultation with a skilled dental implant specialist in Beverly Hills. During this initial appointment, the dentist will carefully assess the patient's oral health, evaluating the condition of the remaining teeth, gums, and underlying bone structure. This thorough examination is essential in determining the suitability of the patient for dental implants and developing a customized treatment plan.
One of the key aspects of the consultation is the use of advanced diagnostic tools, such as 3D imaging and CT scans. These state-of-the-art technologies allow the dentist to create a detailed map of the patient's mouth, identifying any potential challenges or complications that may arise during the implant placement process. This level of precision helps to ensure a safe and successful procedure, minimizing the risk of complications and maximizing the long-term success of the implants.
The Dental Implant Procedure
Once the patient has been deemed a suitable candidate for dental implants, the next step is the surgical placement of the implants. This process typically takes place over the course of several appointments, with the dentist working meticulously to ensure the optimal positioning and integration of the implants.
The first stage of the procedure involves the surgical placement of the titanium implant posts into the patient's jawbone. This is a delicate and precisely executed process, as the implants must be positioned in a way that ensures their long-term stability and alignment with the surrounding teeth. The dentist will carefully plan the placement of the implants, using the detailed diagnostic information gathered during the consultation to guide their every move.
Following the implant placement, a period of healing is required, during which the titanium posts fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This integration is crucial for the long-term success of the implants, as it provides a solid foundation for the replacement teeth. During this time, the patient may be fitted with temporary restorations to maintain the aesthetic and functional integrity of their smile.
Once the healing process is complete, the dentist will move on to the final stage of the procedure: the attachment of the permanent replacement teeth, known as the dental crowns. These custom-crafted restorations are designed to seamlessly blend with the patient's natural teeth, creating a beautiful and harmonious smile.
The Recovery Process
The recovery process following dental implant placement is a crucial aspect of the overall treatment journey. While the procedure itself is relatively straightforward, with modern techniques minimizing discomfort and recovery time, it is essential that patients follow the dentist's instructions carefully to ensure a smooth and successful outcome.
In the days immediately following the implant placement, patients may experience some mild discomfort, swelling, and slight bruising in the treated area. The dentist will provide detailed instructions on how to manage these side effects, often recommending over-the-counter pain medication and the use of cold compresses to alleviate any discomfort.
As the weeks progress, the patient will begin to notice a gradual decrease in any post-operative symptoms, with the jawbone and surrounding tissues steadily adapting to the presence of the new implants. During this time, it is crucial that patients maintain excellent oral hygiene, carefully cleaning the treatment site and adhering to any dietary restrictions put in place by the dentist.
Once the osseointegration process is complete and the permanent dental crowns have been attached, patients can expect to enjoy the full benefits of their dental implants. The replacement teeth will function just like the patient's natural teeth, allowing them to eat, speak, and smile with confidence. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings will be essential to ensure the longevity of the implants and maintain the overall health of the patient's mouth.
The Advantages of Dental Implants in Beverly Hills

OpenResearch reveals potential impacts of universal basic income
.pp-multiple-authors-boxes-wrapper display:none; img width:100%;
A study conducted by OpenResearch has shed light on the transformative potential of universal basic income (UBI). The research aimed to “learn from participants’ experiences and better understand both the potential and the limitations of unconditional cash transfers.”
The study – which provided participants with an extra $1,000 per month – revealed significant impacts across various aspects of recipients’ lives, including health, spending habits, employment, personal agency, and housing mobility.
In healthcare, the analysis showed increased utilisation of medical services, particularly in dental and specialist care.
One participant noted, “I got myself braces…I feel like people underestimate the importance of having nice teeth because it affects more than just your own sense of self, it affects how people look at you.”
While no immediate measurable effects on physical health were observed, researchers suggest that increased medical care utilisation could lead to long-term health benefits.
The study also uncovered interesting spending patterns among UBI recipients.
On average, participants increased their overall monthly spending by $310, with significant allocations towards basic needs such as food, transportation, and rent. Notably, there was a 26% increase in financial support provided to others, highlighting the ripple effect of UBI on communities.
In terms of employment, the study revealed nuanced outcomes.
While there was a slight decrease in overall employment rates and work hours among recipients, the study found that UBI provided individuals with greater flexibility in making employment decisions aligned with their circumstances and goals.
One participant explained, “Because of that money and being able to build up my savings, I’m in a position for once to be picky…I don’t have to take a crappy job just because I need income right now.”
The research also uncovered significant improvements in personal agency and future planning.Â
UBI recipients were 14% more likely to pursue education or job training and 5% more likely to have a budget compared to the control group. Black recipients in the third year of the program were 26% more likely to report starting or helping to start a business.
Lastly, the study’s analysis revealed increased housing mobility among UBI recipients. Participants were 11% more likely to move neighbourhoods and 23% more likely to actively search for new housing compared to the control group.
the openresearch team releases the first result from their UBI study:https://t.co/8YXBwVeQeW
great, diligent work over the past few years. proud of the team!
— Sam Altman (@sama) July 22, 2024
The study provides valuable insights into the potential impacts of UBI, offering policymakers and researchers a data-driven foundation for future decisions on social welfare programs. This major societal conversation may be necessary if worst case scenarios around AI-induced job displacement come to fruition.

The Complete Guide to Dental Implants in Castro Valley
Introduction
A healthy and confident smile is an invaluable asset, and missing teeth can often impact not only one's oral health but also their self-esteem. Dental implants have emerged as a groundbreaking solution for restoring missing teeth, offering numerous benefits that go beyond aesthetics. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore everything you need to know about dental implants in Castro Valley, California, and how they can transform your smile and quality of life.
Understanding Dental Implants:
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of biocompatible materials, usually titanium. They are surgically placed into the jawbone to serve as a sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. Dental implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, multiple teeth, or even an entire arch of teeth.
The Dental Implant Process:
The dental implant process typically involves several stages:
Initial Consultation: The journey begins with an initial consultation with a dental implant specialist in Castro Valley. During this visit, the dentist will evaluate your oral health, discuss your goals, and determine if you are a suitable candidate for dental implants. Factors such as the density and quality of your jawbone, overall health, and lifestyle habits will be considered.
Treatment Planning: If you are a good candidate for dental implants, the next step is treatment planning. This involves creating a customized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs. The dentist will determine the number of implants needed, the type of implant restoration (crown, bridge, or denture), and the timeline for the procedure.
Implant Placement: The dental implant placement is performed surgically. The dentist will make a small incision in the gum tissue and carefully insert the implant into the jawbone. Over the next few months, the implant will naturally fuse with the bone through a process called osseointegration, creating a strong and stable foundation.
Abutment Placement: After osseointegration is complete, a small connector piece called an abutment is attached to the implant. This abutment serves as the connection between the implant and the replacement tooth or teeth.
Restoration: Finally, the restoration phase involves attaching the custom-made replacement tooth or teeth to the abutment. These restorations are meticulously designed to match the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth, ensuring a seamless and natural appearance.
Benefits of Dental Implants in Castro Valley:
Natural Look and Feel: Dental implants provide the most natural look and feel compared to other tooth replacement options. They blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, allowing you to smile, speak, and eat with confidence.
Improved Oral Health: Unlike traditional bridges, dental implants do not require the alteration or removal of adjacent healthy teeth. This preserves the integrity of your remaining teeth and promotes better long-term oral health.
Enhanced Stability and Functionality: Dental implants are firmly anchored in the jawbone, offering unmatched stability and functionality. You can eat your favorite foods without worrying about slippage or discomfort.
Longevity: With proper care, dental implants have the potential to last a lifetime. This longevity makes them a cost-effective solution in the long run.
Preservation of Bone Density: When a tooth is lost, the underlying jawbone can start to deteriorate. Dental implants stimulate the bone, preventing further bone loss and maintaining your facial structure.
Improved Speech: Missing teeth can affect your speech. Dental implants help restore proper speech patterns, allowing for clear and confident communication.
Maintaining Dental Implants:
Caring for dental implants in Castro Valley is similar to caring for natural teeth. Follow these essential maintenance steps:
Regular Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily to remove plaque and prevent gum disease. Using a soft-bristle toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste is recommended.
Professional Check-ups: Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings. Your dentist will monitor the health of your dental implants and address any concerns.
Avoid Tobacco: Smoking and tobacco use can increase the risk of implant failure and complications. If you smoke, consider quitting or reducing your tobacco consumption.
Healthy Diet: Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Avoid excessive sugar and acidic foods, as they can contribute to gum disease and dental implant problems.
Protect Your Implants: If you engage in activities that may risk trauma to your face or teeth, such as contact sports, consider wearing a mouthguard to protect your dental implants.
Conclusion:
Dental implants in Castro Valley offer a transformative solution for individuals with missing teeth, providing natural aesthetics, improved oral health, stability, and functionality. The dental implant process involves careful planning, surgical placement, and restoration to create a beautiful and functional smile that can last a lifetime.
If you are considering dental implants to restore your smile, consult with a reputable dental implant specialist in Castro Valley. They will assess your individual needs, guide you through the treatment process, and provide ongoing care to ensure the longevity and success of your dental implants. With the right care and attention, dental implants can truly transform your smile and enhance your overall quality of life.

Transform Your Smile with Dental Implants in Ventura
In the beautiful coastal city of Ventura, where the sun-kissed beaches and pleasant weather make every day feel like a vacation, there's no reason to hide your smile due to missing teeth. Thanks to modern dentistry and the expertise of The Smile Shapers, dental implants have become a life-changing solution for countless individuals looking to regain their confidence and oral health.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of biocompatible materials like titanium. They are surgically placed into the jawbone to support replacement teeth, such as crowns, bridges, or dentures. Unlike traditional dentures or bridges, dental implants offer a permanent, stable, and natural-looking solution for missing teeth.
Why Choose Dental Implants?
Improved Aesthetics:Â Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth. They seamlessly blend with your existing teeth, enhancing your smile's aesthetics.
Enhanced Comfort:Â Unlike removable dentures, implants are fixed in place, so you can eat, speak, and smile without worrying about them slipping or falling out.
Preservation of Bone Structure:Â Dental implants stimulate the jawbone, preventing bone loss that can occur with missing teeth. This helps maintain your facial structure.
Longevity:Â With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime, making them a cost-effective solution in the long run.
Oral Health:Â Dental implants don't require altering adjacent teeth, as is often necessary with bridges. This preserves the health of your remaining natural teeth.
The Smile Shapers: Your Trusted Implant Specialists
When considering dental implants in Ventura, it's crucial to choose a reputable dental practice. The Smile Shapers have a team of experienced dentists who specialize in implantology. They are dedicated to providing personalized care, ensuring your comfort and satisfaction throughout the implant process.
The Dental Implant Procedure
Consultation:Â Your journey begins with a comprehensive consultation. The Smile Shapers will assess your oral health and discuss your goals, answering any questions you may have.
Implant Placement:Â During a minor surgical procedure, the implant is placed into your jawbone. Over a few months, the implant fuses with the bone, creating a sturdy foundation.
Restoration:Â Once the implant is fully integrated, a custom-made crown, bridge, or denture is securely attached to it. This restoration will look and function just like your natural teeth.
Maintenance:Â Proper oral hygiene and regular check-ups with The Smile Shapers are essential to ensure the longevity of your dental implants.
Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Most individuals with good oral and overall health can be candidates for dental implants. However, a thorough evaluation by The Smile Shapers will determine your suitability for the procedure.

Choosing the Right Dental Implant Specialist in Ventura
Dental implants have become a popular and effective solution for individuals who have lost one or more teeth. As a restorative dental procedure, dental implants offer numerous benefits, including improved oral health, enhanced aesthetics, and increased functionality. However, choosing the right dental implant specialist in Ventura, California, is crucial to ensuring the success and longevity of your dental implant treatment.
In this comprehensive article, we will explore the key factors to consider when selecting a dental implant specialist in Ventura, CA, and provide you with the necessary information to make an informed decision.
Importance of Choosing the Right Dental Implant Specialist
Dental implant surgery is a complex and delicate procedure that requires a high level of skill, expertise, and experience. The success of the treatment, as well as the long-term health and stability of the implant, largely depend on the expertise of the dental implant specialist.
Selecting the right specialist can make a significant difference in the outcome of your treatment, ensuring that you receive the best possible care and achieve the desired results. Factors such as the dentist's qualifications, experience, and use of advanced techniques and technologies can all impact the success of your dental implant procedure.
Qualifications and Credentials of a Dental Implant Specialist
When choosing a dental implant specialist in Ventura, CA, it's essential to consider the individual's qualifications and credentials. Look for the following:
Dental Degree: The dentist should hold a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from an accredited dental school.
Specialized Training: The dentist should have additional training and certification in implant dentistry, such as a postgraduate program or residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery or prosthodontics.
Membership in Professional Organizations: The dentist should be a member of respected professional organizations, such as the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) or the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), which demonstrate a commitment to continuing education and adherence to industry standards.
Ongoing Education and Training: Ensure that the dentist regularly attends conferences, workshops, and other educational events to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in dental implant technology and techniques.
Experience and Expertise of the Dental Implant Specialist
In addition to the dentist's qualifications, it's essential to consider their level of experience and expertise in dental implant procedures. Look for the following:
Years of Experience: The dentist should have several years of experience performing dental implant procedures, as this will ensure they have refined their skills and techniques.
Successful Outcomes: Ask the dentist about their success rates and the longevity of the dental implants they have placed. A dentist with a track record of successful and long-lasting implants is a good indicator of their expertise.
Specialized Techniques and Technologies: Inquire about the dentist's use of advanced techniques, such as computer-guided surgery, and the latest technologies, such as 3D imaging, which can enhance the precision and predictability of the implant placement.
Patient Testimonials and Reviews: Look for online reviews, patient testimonials, and referrals from other healthcare providers, as these can provide valuable insights into the dentist's bedside manner, communication skills, and overall patient satisfaction.
Personalized Treatment Planning and Customized Care
Dental implant treatment is not a one-size-fits-all solution. The right dental implant Ventura CA, should take a personalized approach to your care, considering your unique oral health needs, aesthetic preferences, and long-term goals.
Look for a dentist who will take the time to thoroughly assess your oral condition, discuss your treatment options, and develop a customized plan that addresses your specific requirements. This personalized approach ensures that the dental implant solution is tailored to your individual needs, maximizing the success and longevity of the treatment.
Ongoing Support and Maintenance
Dental implants require regular maintenance and monitoring to ensure their long-term success. The right dental implant specialist in Ventura, CA, should provide comprehensive follow-up care and support, including:
Routine Checkups and Cleanings: The dentist should schedule regular checkups and professional cleanings to monitor the health and stability of the implants.
Address Any Issues: If any complications or concerns arise, the dentist should promptly address them and provide appropriate treatment or recommendations.
Ongoing Education and Guidance: The dentist should be available to answer your questions, provide guidance on proper oral hygiene, and educate you on the long-term care of your dental implants.
Conclusion
Choosing the right dental implant specialist in Ventura, CA, is crucial to the success and longevity of your dental implant treatment. By considering the dentist's qualifications, experience, expertise, personalized approach, and commitment to ongoing support, you can ensure that you receive the highest quality of care and achieve the desired outcomes for your oral health and aesthetics.Take the time to research and evaluate potential dental implant specialists in the Ventura area, and don't hesitate to schedule consultations to find the right fit for your needs.
