TECHNICAL INTERVIEWS: OR HOW I LEARNED NOT TO FREAK OUT AND LOVE THE CODE CHALLENGE
(^This photo accurately depicts all my emotions during the onset of a technical interview.)
Now that I've wrapped up my contract with my last company, I'm actively seeking a new full time role (with roots!) as a front end developer. Which means that I'm getting introduced to many people, drinking much coffee and putting on my best self to talk shop, which is genuinely pretty fun. If all goes well on the first blush, I may make it to the second round. The round that separates the wheat from the chaff- The Technical Interview.
As a newer developer, simply uttering the terms "Technical Interview" or "Code Challenge" can set off waves of momentary anxiety deep within my mirror surfaced pond core. In my months since graduating from Flatiron I've been lucky enough to have a few of these passed my way, all of which have been great learning experiences for me.
Notice I used the term "lucky" in the last paragraph as well as "learning experiences"? That's because each of these code challenges have proved just that. After i had gotten a couple of code challenges under my belt, a curious thing happened- I broke through the wall of temporary anxiety in a two part process. I still wasn't the next Ada Lovelace, but after I had stumbled upon this I also wasn't seriously considering dropping into the fetal position in the moment. And you can too!
Part of this revelation of sorts stems from the fact that being a developer is not my first career. I've been on the other side of that table in my previous careers, sifting through a wide pool of very qualified candidates with incredibly similar backgrounds. (It makes it really hard to decide!) So I figured that half of the interviewing process was personality based, as in if I would mesh well within the corporate culture at that company. This helped make the onset of the technical interview a bit easier to approach.
Also, as a former employer looking to hire employees, I knew that I would consider a candidate who might not be the most qualified, but genuinely showed interest in the company, an eagerness to learn AND was easy to chat with. This, now as a candidate sitting on the opposite side of the table again, led me to my first white light moment when I recently asked myself:
"I might not be the best at this (language, framework, methodology), but how can I show that I really like these people and what they're doing? Could I admit my ignorance in a technical interview and ask them how they'd try something if I get stuck (on a high level anyway)?"
And that, right there, settled the seas of anxiety greatly. That exact internal dialogue right there. Having the knowledge that the people who were interviewing me were well aware that they weren't getting a senior engineer currently, but they were chatting with someone who knew a fair amount on the subject and was enthusiastic about the topic at hand made everything seem a little easier. I could breathe a little deeper, and tread water for a split second.
Technical transparency aside, eventually I knew I would still have to go through a code challenge in a technical interview- which is still pretty nerve wracking. These challenges always churn up a bunch of questions for me, usually all at once. Are you allowed to google things that you kind of know, but want to make sure your syntax is correct? What if the challenge has aspects that you've never really tried to do before? And, as a front end developer, how well do you know a closure or what hoisting does or how to work with multidimensional arrays? Horrible. So I wasn't entirely out of the woods yet, but I had to figure out something.
Recently when this was presented to me, a curious thing happened. I had my second white light moment as I was sweating it out in front of my computer screen, wondering if I could really pull this off. In an instant when I had this thought, most of those waves of anxiety petered out, leaving only a calm pool where I could get down to code. It slowly dawned on me that...
I'm a developer. I can draw out a roadmap of program behavior, break down bigger problems into smaller problems, then work my way up. If I get stuck, I can pseudocode and talk it out.
I kid you not, when this occurred to me, it was a complete game changer. In an instant I was released from paralyzing anxiety and the code just flew from my brain, to my fingertips, to the screen and into their respective repositories as if I had been doing this since forever. It was fantastic.
Which brings me back to another thing that I had learned as a prospective employer and had also come to me in that same moment- I want to see how much resolve a candidate has. I knew that I could give a code challenge my all, but there was the very real chance that I might not be able to get it all done. So it seems only logical that if I should not be able to finish a challenge that I should offer to send a finished version for review, probably with more bells and whistles, as if I'm there already, I'm really excited about the company and people I am meeting. I would think anyone would find it impressive that someone went the extra mile to tie up loose ends if they really liked what they're doing.
All in all though, I have really no clue as to what interviewers are looking for in a candidate when they go through a technical interview. It could be just this, or it could be a rock solid knowledge of the technology the company is using. However, I'm willing to wager that either way, having these two tactics in your back pocket when you're interviewing will get you pretty far.
I hope.
