How To Teach Your Young Child About Investing (even if you, no sabi am)
Tumblr media
Investing or investment is a tool to earn money that your child can use their entire life. This is the more reason they need to understand investing in today’s real-world of information, complex options and decisions One of the things we were not taught in school is the basics of investing. Even the majority of adults don’t understand the basics themselves, as this can be a tedious task Fortunately, you don’t have to be an expert to teach your kids or even to do it yourself Below are the simple tips to teach young children about investing;
How To Teach Your Young Child About Investing (even if you, no sabi am)
Set Expectations: Set goals, set expectations. What are you expecting them to have made at the end of the investment? I’m not saying they have to be Warren Buffet or Bill Gates; however, set goals Start Simple with A Savings Account: The saying is ‘walk before you fly or crawl before you walk’, same goes with investing too; save before you invest Open a Savings account at any local bank, encourage your children to save part of the money they get as pocket monies, gifts money, etc. Additionally, tell them over time, their money starts getting interests and the higher the interest rate, the more money they can make Explain What Investing Is: Investing simply means spending money with the hope of getting more money. Saving in a bank account is one form of investing. Purchase of stocks is another way to invest Let them know that stocks are being sold by companies who need money to grow and once you a company’s stock, you own a little piece of that company What is a Stock? Should you be asked this question due to the inquisitive nature of children, a stock simply is a piece of paper that denotes that you own a little piece of that company. A certain percentage of the company Why Do People Buy Stocks? People try to make more money by buying stocks. It’s a means by which the companies borrow your money and in return payback with interest. If the company performs very well in terms of sales of goods, you make more money, otherwise, you lose money Scenario 1: If after you bought stocks in a gala company, products were moving well, people were buying more of the gala; this attracts more investors to want to buy stocks thereby increasing the stock price. You make money when you sell your stock shares Scenario 2: If on the flip side, people were not buying as much as needed for the company to make a gain, losing money; then you also lose money because the demand for the company’s stock has decreased You could make this fun by getting 5 common companies around your children’s daily products like toys, cartoons and invest in these companies on their behalf, making them watch stock price daily and calculate winnings & losses at the end of d month Continue the Conversation: It’s ok if they don’t understand at first but try to always bring it up in your daily conversations with them They want to buy shoes, ask them what is the name of the company that produced it, etc. Read the full article
