I love how she takes her coffee with unsweetened almond milk and nothing else
I love that her favourite perfume is into the night from bath and body works
I love that she loves going there during Christmas to look at all the themed mini hand sanitisers
I love that her hoodie is slightly too big on her so she rolls her sleeves up over her hands
I love that she knows more about my sun sign than I do
I love that despite having more clothes than me she always steals my socks cause the thinks theyâre comfier than hers (theyâre exactly the same)
I love that she has a list of mine and her allergies taped to the cabinet so we donât forget and make something we canât eat
I love that she loves cooking and hates baking
I love that I constantly find her bonnets laying in places I canât possibly imagine finding a bonnet
I love that she grabs my hand to show me something and then forgets to let go
I love that she asks me to put her eyeliner on so itâs even on both eyes (it never is)
I love that she complains about how her hair wonât behave but it always looks good
I love that she grows lavender in the yard
I love that the lavender has been dead for months because she has a black thumb
I love her weird smoothies
I love every time she has horror stories from work
I love the way her faces scrunches up when she eats something too sweet
I love the way she eats lemons
I love the way she makes me do stupid dance trends when I have no sense of rhythm at all
I love the way she snorts when she laughs
I love thatâs sheâs a huge germaphobe and refuses to touch me when Iâm even a little sick
I love the way she debates everything
I love the way she furrows her brows and gets this little forehead wrinkle when someone says something stupid
I love that she always asks me to tie her tie even though she knows more knots than I do
I love that she has the worst music taste and we argue about it constantly cause Taylor swift is not that good but she insists
I love that she has pajama sets and she never ever mixes them
I love that she wears her socks inside out cause she doesnât like the texture on her toes
I love the way she smiles
I love the way she always talks about getting a piercing but she never does because sheâs afraid of needles
I love that even tho sheâs afraid she still got a flash tattoo with me on Friday the thirteenth
I love that she paints my nails ever Saturday even though we both know theyâll rub off at work before Wednesday
I love that she styles my hair
I love that she always manages to find a cool stick when we go bike riding and she always gives it to my dog
I love that she loves roses but not the red ones
I love that sheâs on here and might see this but she doesnât know itâs me

1, 2, 3, _
Imagine the stress of planning a Stark wedding. Despite their team of three wedding planners, Peter and Tony still have a lot to do. Peter, admittedly, gets stuck with most of the work, but Tony chips in enough to make it theirs. But needless to say, Peter is way past due for a little self-care. After all, Taylor Swift dropped her album a few days before and heâd yet to have a chance to sit and listen, so that is his plan for the night. Tony is away at an evening meeting before going to spend a few hours tinkering in the lab, so Peter has his Friday evening to himself.
Imagine Peter gets inspired by the music (and maybe a few TikTok videos heâd seen) and finds himself wandering to the bathroom to film a TikTok.
The video starts with Peter sitting in the shower, fully dressed in his pajamas, with hot water pouring down on him. His head is in his hands, looking like heâs sobbing, but you canât see his face. Heâs dripping wet and âAll Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylorâs Version)â is blasting through the bathroom.
And you called me up again just to break me like a promise,
So casually cruel in the name of being honest
Iâm a crumpled up piece of paper-
FRIDAY alerts Tony that Peter is in severe emotional distress while Tony is in his meeting. The man leaves without an explanation, practically running to an elevator as he jabs at his phone.
Imagine Peterâs TikTok of him crying on the shower floor gets interrupted by his fiance.
âPeter?! Peter, whatâs going on? FRIDAY told me you were in distress and you werenât answering your phone!â Tonyâs voice is loud, the crash of the bathroom door slamming against the wall as the man rushes in. FRIDAY stops the music as Tony runs towards Peter, quickly kneeling down in front of him under the water and grabbing hold of him.
âI-I-Iâm crying âcause we broke up!â Peter exclaims, lifting his head as Tony pulls him into his chest. Tony tilts his head, pausing for a second before pushing dripping wet curls off of Peterâs forehead.
âBaby, we didnât⌠we didnât break up.â Tony is clearly confused, staring down at the boy in his arms. Tony reaches one hand back, turning the water off so the stream stops pouring down on them.
âIf Taylor sings about a break up, Iâm going through a break up,â Peter explains, slightly exasperated as he gestures towards his phone set up on the sinks, pointing towards them. Tony looks up, making eye contact with the camera, his confused expression turning into a glare.
âYou⌠this is just... Iâll have you know this is Tom Ford,â Tony huffs, gesturing to his suit as he gets out of the shower. His suit is soaking wet, clinging tightly to his skin as he stomps off.
Peter uploads it with the caption, âHow am I supposed to care about Tom Ford when my heart is SHATTERED?â
~~
Peter doesnât upload very often, so after the Swiftie-themed TikTok goes viral, nobody expects him to post again the very next day.
It starts the exact same way as the video before and one could have mistaken it for just a second take if Peter wasnât wearing a different outfit as he cries under the shower stream with the same song playing.
You said that if we had been closer in age, maybe it wouldâve been fine,
And that made me want to die
Tony interrupts again this time, stepping into the frame. His back is to the camera, shirtless and wearing just a pair of gray sweatpants.
âPete⌠are you pretending we broke up again?â Tony asks carefully, staring at the boy.
âYeah,â Peter mumbles into his hands, nodding a bit.
âThis is the third time today,â Tony points out, sighing as he walks away.
It was sweetly captioned, âAnd he checked in all three times, just to make sure. <3â
~~
Imagine that on day three, millions around the world get a notification that Peter Parker just posted a new TikTok.
Today, Peter is sitting on the floor of the shower in a once-fluffy robe, water pouring down. The difference is that today, Tony Stark himself is sitting beside him in a matching robe, staring blankly at the wall in front of them.
And I was never good at telling jokes, but the punch line goes,
âIâll get older, but your lovers stay my age.â
âFinally got him to listen. He wants it known that (1) he resents the age gap jabs, (2) ten minutes is far too long for a breakup song, and (3) no, I havenât been allowed to make this our wedding song.â

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A package arrived and you nearly screamed from joy. You unwrapped it immediately and grinned ear to ear. Youâd had an idea some time ago, but had only gotten around to it recently. But now, you could put your plan in motion. Hayden would be home in probably forty-five minutes so you began to set out candy, cokes, and got the popcorn ready to pop with melted butter and salt on the side.Â
Hayden walked in, looking beat and you felt bad for him, but seeing him was always the highlight of your day, even if he didnât feel the same. Again, you were plagued with the question, how and when did Hayden go from he friendly face you enjoyed seeing, your savior of the day to the man you could hardly stand being away from? At this point, you didnât care, you were just happy he was here, with you, whether he felt the same or not.
âHey! How was work?â
âExhausting...I think Iâm just gonna hit the hay,â he said, walking in.
âWait! I have something for you!â you said, running over and grabbing his hand and pulling him on the couch.
He plopped on the couch, his head resting on the back with his eyes closed. âUgh. Y/N, Iâm tired. Can it wait till tomorrow?â
âWell...technically, it can, but I canât! I have a surprise for you!â
âA surprise? What is it?âÂ
You grinned and pulled up a basket, the first DVD on top.
âOpen your eyes,â you instructed.Â
He propped one eye open to look at you, and when he saw you were holding something, he opened both and sat up. He looked at the object on top, picking it up.Â
âIn the mouth of MadnessâŚâ he said curiously as he flipped it over in his hand, then looked at the next one sitting on top of the pile. âStreet Law? Y/N, why do you have old movies I played in?â
âBecause we are going to have a marathon of your movies!â you exclaimed, giddy.
âWhat? Why?â
âWell...because Iâve never seen a lot of these. Iâve seen you in like two things, and I donât think thatâs right. I want to fully understand my roommate,â you explained with a beaming smile.
âWe...You really donât have to do that,â he insisted, getting shy as he leaned forward and started looking at the movies. âWow. You really got all of themâŚâ he mused, almost under his breath. âBut Iâm barely even in In the Mouth of Madness,â he remarked.Â
âSo? Your face is in it, so weâre watching it.â
âAnd why am I being subjected to this?â he asked as he fell back on the sofa and propped up his feet.Â
âBecause,â you started as you hopped up to pop the popcorn, âI need you here to make fun of you when you stay cheesy shit in these movies.â
âAnd how do you know I say cheesy shit?â he retorted, spinning to face you, resting his chin on the couch, looking more than adorable.Â
You shrugged. âDoesnât every actor, somewhere, have a few skeletons in their closet? Iâm sure out of all of these films, at some point, you said something totally stupid, and itâs my duty as your best friend to make sure you donât live it down,â you teased as you stuck your tongue out at him.Â
Grabbing the popcorn, butter, and salt, you headed back to the couch and plopped down beside him, starting the first movie that was already queued up.Â
The two of you settled in for a long marathon, and you got through several films, until you reached Life as a House, which totally blew you away. The opening scene of Hayden made you audibly gasp.
âOh, my god, thatâs you!â you shouted as you pointed at the TV.Â
âYeah, thatâs kinda the point, Y/N,â he joked before you slapped his shoulder, causing him to laugh.
âNo, you jerk. Like...Thatâs you! You look soâŚâ
âYoung?â
âI was going to say different. You donât look much older than now. Oh my god, youâre such a brat!â you commented as you watched the film. Usually you tried to keep quiet during movies, but this was just too good and too easy to mess with him.Â
âUh, no, heâs a brat. Iâm not,â he corrected, pointing to the screen and glaring at you.
âWell you play the part pretty well,â you joked with a sideways look.
âThat just means Iâm an excellent actor and I take no shame in that.â
âNo one said you should.â At this, you stuck your tongue out at him. âI am loving the outfit,â you mocked.
âOh, just shush and watch the damn thing,â he commanded, gesturing to the movie.
You giggled and quieted down to watch the film, trying to ignore the fact that you did really like him in this role. It was the first time so far he looked...of age. He had a goth look to him and at one time, youâd really been into goth yourself. He didnât look half bad with black hair, but his blonde fit him so much better.Â
The movie progressed nicely. You really did think he was acting very well, seeing as Hayden could never act half as bratty and annoying as his character, he made it believable. But then...at a particular scene, he was in a shower and your hormones started to stir in ways you wish they didnât. If youâd been watching this alone, it would be one thing, but actually sitting next to the guy who was getting you hot and bothered, being your best friend, made it feel insanely awkward for you.Â
It didnât help then, that later, in the same shower, his female co star kissed him and he orgasmed prematurely. Regardless of the fact that it wasnât real, that the character was facing embarrassment...you were highly aroused. The sounds he had made, the expression he wore, it was all dangerous mix of an aphrodisiac for you. Because like it or not, real or fake, Hayden had just made orgasmic sounds, and you hadnât realized until that moment how badly you wanted to hear the real thing.Â
Chancing a glance at him, he was sitting with his right arm resting on the couch, propping his face up with his cheek resting against his fist. He looked so...calm, and observant.Â
âAre you okay?â you suddenly asked.
He turned to you, breaking out of his trance. âHuh? Yeah, Iâm fine. Why?â
âWell, I just realized, I never asked you if it was okay to watch all of these or if youâre comfortable with it or whatever. I just sort of made you do it,â you noted meekly.
âY/N, itâs fine. Itâs kinda fun reliving these films.â
âGood. If it gets weird or awkward or anything, let me know,â you assured.
âYou mean because I just came on screen with you watching? No, not awkward at allâŚâ he said evenly before shooting you a half smile and turning his attention back to the screen.
After the film was through, and you were done crying, you picked up your glass and went back to the kitchen for a refill when your hand accidentally knocked into the counter, smashing the glass in your hand to pieces. The bottom part of the glass broke off onto the floor, the top piece in your hand had entirely shattered, shards and pieces flying everywhere. When you looked down, your feet had tiny bloody streaks everywhere, and your hand had shards of small pieces of glass in them.
âY/N?â Hayden said as he turned around at the noise. âYou okay?âÂ
âUh, yeah, a glass broke. Iâm fine though.â
âOh, shit. It's everywhere,â he said as he jumped up and came over. He picked up the big pieces and put them on the counter. âOh my god. Your hand,â he noted as he looked at it. âDonât move, you could get cut worse,â he instructed as he looked around at all the tiny shards. Without warning, he suddenly grabbed you bridal style.Â
âHayden!â you shrieked, scared of him dropping you, your arms flying.Â
âY/N, stop. Iâm just carrying you over here so you donât step on the glass,â he said as he got you on the sofa. âDonât let your feet touch the ground. You donât want to get glass stuck in there. Iâm gonna clean that up and Iâll be right back.â
âDonât be ridiculous! I can clean up a simple glass breaking,â you argued as you started to get up before Hayden pointed at you and gave you a warning look.
âDonât. Itâll take like two seconds. Just sit.â
He ran to the closet and got the broom and worked on sweeping nearly all of the kitchen then came over to you, examining your cuts on your legs, feet, and hands. He was still in jeans and boots, so he had been safe from the glass, but you were in a shirt and pajama shorts, barefoot, leaving you open to all the glass.
His fingers traced over your feet, lightly touching up your leg, the sensation much stronger than you anticipated. You and Hayden touched all the time, grabbing his hand to pull him somewhere, hugging every now and again, hitting him playfully...But now, he was tenderly, gently, touching you, and shortly after that orgasm scene in your head, so your body wasnât responding in the typical sense, sending a blush to your cheeks.Â
âThey look okay, nothing too deep, just need to be cleaned up. Whereâs your kit?â
âIâve got peroxide and cotton balls and all that in my bathroom, the bottom drawer on the right,â you informed, thrusting your chin towards your room.Â
âI'll be right back.â
âHayden--â
âShut up,â he said without looking at you as he walked away.Â
When he returned, he set to cleaning you with a wet washcloth, wiping the little streaks of blood everywhere, then used peroxide on all the spots that came back up, patiently, gingerly tending to your minor cuts, his attention seemed hyper focused on the task at hand. Meanwhile, your eyes were planted on him, watching him, drinking him in, etching the lines of his face, his fingers, his jawline, his neck all to your memory.Â
Once your eyes hit his fingers, your thoughts went to places they shouldnât explore, places that shouldnât be explored. But, you couldnât help it. Hayden was beyond any man youâd ever met. He was...everything youâd ever wanted from a man and more. He was a father, a caring, loving one. He was a best friend, loyal, patient, willing to listen to you vent and bitch and whine and complain on end. He was a hard worker, never complaining of long and hard days, not much. He was talented and funny and understanding. He was kind and thoughtful.Â
You wanted to know everything about him. You wanted to share nights with him as well as days. You wanted to know what it feels like to greet him when it got home with a kiss, instead of a friendly wave. You wanted to know what it was like to wake up next to him. You wanted to know what his scruff felt like before heâd shaved in the morning. You wanted to know what it was like to call him in between shots and tell him how you loved him, how you wanted to see him.
Sometimes, you wanted to just pretend, even for a second, that he was yours. That when you were sitting together on the couch and his arm was around you, that it wasnât a relaxed friendly gesture. Sometimes you wanted to pretend that when he walked in the door, he didnât go to separate bedroom, that he joined you in yours...
You wanted to know if he felt the same. You wanted to know if you danced in his dreams too. If you plagued him at work. If you were an ever present force in his life as well. You wanted to know if he looked forward to seeing you. You wanted to know if he desired touching your skin, all over.
Did he want any of that?
Suddenly, he was done treating your feet and legs and he looked up at you, his eyes filled with so much wonder and mystery, you were captivated by them as he gave you a soft grin.Â
âCan I see your hands?â he asked and you silently obliged, turning them palm up so he could start the same routine. The entire time, you stayed mesmerized by him, watching him, just in awe that youâd met someone like this.
And thatâs when it hit you. You didnât want to wait another day to see if he felt the same. Itâd been nearly four months since you met. And for some time now, youâd felt some pretty deep feelings for this man, and every day it was getting harder and harder to ignore those feelings.
âThere, all fixed up,â Hayden said with a wide grin as he sat the cotton ball on the coffee table.Â
âThanks...WouldâŚ.would you wanna go out to dinner?â
He frowned slightly. âTonight? But itâs after midnight,â he commented. âIf youâre hungry Iâm sure we could find something--â
You shook your head, slightly laughing of embarrassment and nerves, no trace of real humor in the chuckle. âUh, no, not tonight. Like, I donât know, Saturday or something?â
âUh, maybe, why, what's up?â he inquired as he continued to clean up the supplies heâd brought out.
âUh...I...No reason,â you said, shaking your head, the same nervous laugh escaping as you sat back on the couch. âWhatâs next? Star Wars I think. Awesome. I havenât seen this since it came out and Iâve completely spaced it since thenâŚâ
Hayden noticed you rambling, your cheeks heating, your hands shaking and it suddenly clicked in his mind.
âY/N, why did you want to go to dinner?â he softly demanded as he took the dvd case from you and sat it down, situating himself on the edge of couch so you could look at him.Â
Taking a deep breath, you weighed your options of answering. On one hand, you could save face and save the friendship if you just told him to forget it. On the other hand, you knew that if you denied your feelings, you would always wonder if it was a missed chance at a great opportunity.
âI...uhâŚ.I was asking you on a date. I just wanted to see if you wanted to go for dinner and drinks or...whateverâŚâ you explained, your eyes on your lap as you toyed with the hem of your shirt.Â
Haydenâs eyes cast down as well as he mulled over how to answer, and the fact that he had to think about it was answer enough.
âItâs fine, I get it. Youâre not interested. No big deal. I swear,â you promised. âWe can still be friends and all that.âÂ
Inside, you were twisting. Youâd made a fool of yourself. Now he knew that you had feelings for him and he didnât return them. Would he feel awkward around you now?
âY/N...I...I just...Iâm still getting over things with Rachel,â he explained. âI just...Iâm not sure Iâm ready.â
You nodded. âNo, yeah, I get that. Itâs...delicate. Itâs too soon. I understand. Iâm sorry I brought it up,â you said, trying desperately to sound normal. A stiff silence hung between you two before you finally piped up and said, âStar Wars next?â
âUh, I should be getting to bed. Weâll finish tomorrow, yeah?â he asked, his brows going up, hoping you werenât offended, probably.Â
You nodded. âSure. Yeah. No problem.â
Standing, you smiled a goodnight smile at him, and he returned it. âWell, goodnight. See you in the morning,â you quietly said as he returned a salutation and you went to your room, closed the door, and got into bed. Before you knew it, hot tears were streaking down your face, staining your pillow. Quickly, you turned on music so he couldnât hear your heartbroken sobs.
Enchanted - Rafe Cameron
summary: rafe meets reader at a party and she becomes entranced at the idea of himâat the idea of them.
word count: 1744
warnings: fluff mainly, it's pretty mild (edit: just remembered underage drinking lol)
a/n: based off the song enchanted my taylor swift,,, i dunno her old stuff is pretty good and i felt like writing fluff today. did i edit ? of course not :)
there i was again tonight forcing laughter, faking smiles
same old tired, lonely place
walls of insincerity
shifting eyes and vacancy vanished when i saw your face
all i can say is it was enchanting to meet you
the sun danced along the edge of the horizon, colors bursting from the seams into tie dyes of golds, reds, pinks, and purples in time to the music. cliche classical fugues and themes pulsed through speakers, carrying the chamber orchestra's melodies through the entirety of the country club. through the bathrooms, the kitchen, the dining room, and the back patio where teenagers were dancing and sneaking alcoholic beverages from the waiters.
in one corner of the laminate flooring, a girl stood, both hands wrapped around a glass of seltzer water, as she nodded her head to the girls surrounding her. a perfectly manicured set of nails rapped against the laminate wood tabletop as her gaze drifted around the patio. her forced smile caused her cheeks to ache in a falsely saccharine, model-esque bravado. her laughter didn't meet her eyes as she took social cues from the lightly giggling girls around her.
the tall brunette flocking at her immediate right side faux complimented her dress, the royal blue satin draped over her bronzed frame. flashing a tight lipped smile and a grateful nod, she returned the compliment in a way that mocked the girl's insincere and jealous commentary. throwing her head back to allow the staticky, carbonated seltzer to flow down her throat, she closed her eyes, imagining she was anywhere but there.
she sidestepped around the brunette and the table, searching for bar outside, looking to treat her body with something stronger. with her company for the night, she needed the extra boost of intoxication to get by. the rhythmic clack of her heels against the tiles created a harmony to accompany the music that took an upbeat turn for the teenage girls grinding against each other on the dance floor, parents having absconded their children hours before to reminisce themselves. there was no doubt in her mind that her mother was gossiping will her newfound wine drunk friends as her father was at the bar inside with other king pins of kildare.
as she coerced the bartender to mix a splash of rum into her coke as she was only nineteen, a shadow fell across her contoured face. the dip of her cheekbones deepening gauntly and the rouge plush of her lips darkening in the portable shade. the shifting eyes of the bartender paused at the sight of the teenager standing beside herâthe creator of the shadow. she avoided eye contact as long as possible, she knew very few people on kildare, and she wasn't too keen on meeting moreâfrom what she's seen, they're awful people. however, a menacing glare frightened the poor bartender into tipping his rum bottle filled hand into the glass of coke and sliding it across the bar towards her.
with a shy smile she looked up to thank the guy who aided her in her mission to inebriation. "thank you," she faltered as she looked up, the sparkle in his eyes, the curve of his smirk, he was perfectly chiseled. however oddly cliche it sounds, it was almost godlike how his presence enraptured her attention.
"anytime," he didn't break eye contact as he brought his glass, that had been refilled with what she was positive to be alcohol, to his lips. she passed along a brief, but genuine, smile as she made her way back to the corner, the fabric of her dress swaying around her legs as she walked. he couldn't look away from her. surface level, she was gorgeous, and as hormonal as he was, her body was capable of leaving the guy speechless, if he wasn't quite so eloquent.
your eyes whispered "have we met?"
across the room your silhouette starts to make it's way to me
the playful conversation starts
counter all your quick remarks, like passing notes in secrecy
and it was enchanting to meet you
all i can say is it was enchanted to meet you
she knocked her drink back gracefully, not showing any signs of the drink burning her throat on the way down. discarding her glass on a table somewhere, she rolled her shoulders back and slipped into the crowd of dancing teenagers, immediately finding the only girl she knew.
"hi, sarah!" she smiled toothily at the dirty blonde. sarah returned the grin, stepping towards her and grabbing her hands to pull her into the heart of the sea of moving bodies. sarah spun the girl around jokingly, laughter erupting between them as the taps of heels and lights of the country club threw a halt in the regularity of the outer banks suburbia.
somewhere between sillily slow dancing and dancing somewhat sensually, the alcohol kicking in, her eyes met with the boy from before. she knew his eyes were watching her the entire time, trying to answer a question that had toyed with his mind since they had their short exchange at the bar. she was thinking the same thing, had they met before? something was so familiar about him, but she couldn't put her mauve painted finger on it.
the definitely familiar smirk worked its way across his face as he worked his way across the dance floor. "hey," his voice greeted in her ear as she swayed her hips to the beat, gradually getting farther away from sarah as her intoxication grew stronger.
"hi!" her grin widened at the boy, her personality becoming bubbly as she grabbed his hand and tried to spin him but couldn't quite get her arm over his head due to his height. "i'm y/n, who are you?"
"rafe cameron. have i seen you before?" rafe replied, following with a question as he bent his knees so the girl in front of him could, in fact, twirl him around.
"yeah, we just saw each other at the bar, you silly goose." grabbing both his hands, she danced with him, completely informally, almost as if she was trying to give her parents a metaphorical middle finger. that is, until she realized what he said his last name was. "oh my god! my dad is closing a business deal with yours!"
"yeah, he is, and silly goose?" rafe's hands moved to the small of her back as the song changed to a slower melody. she wrapped her arms around his neck loosely and nodded. her eyes lit up from what he saw earlier, setting her face aglow. she was absolutely gorgeous under the moonlight and scattered lamps.
"would you prefer silly duck or silly chicken?" she quizzed, her brows quirking upwards. she felt content there, her conversation with rafe flowing through their quick remarks and quips.
whether it was the rum surging through her neurons or the heels pushing her up onto her tiptoes, she stumbled, stepping on rafe's toes on accident. he laughed it off, setting off fireworks in his turquoise eyes. "do you take constructive criticism on dancing?"
"oh, not with being emotionally wounded soon thereafter." she replied, nodding her head with a grin as she took a step back and stabilized herself. "so, what's it like being the son of the most important man on the island?"
rafe spun her around before letting her twirl, the song changing again, prompting the dancing crowd to shake their heads, ruining their perfectly styled hair and sway their hips, allowing dresses of satin to float through the air. "oh, y'know, lots of golfing and parties."
"you seem like the type to golf." y/n replied, bumping her hip into rafe's as they danced. "you don't seem like the type to dance, though."
"yeah, you're right." he dramatically conceded, taking her hand again and doing the wave. "so, cheer me on very loudly, i'm very insecure."
the conversation was tossed back and forth between the limited space between them due to forced proximity. he just seemed so different than the other people she's met in kildare. but dancing stopped and music paused when his father, and her father, walked out of the country club's building to celebrate their business deal.
"i've gotta go."
this night is sparkling, don't you let it go
i'm wonder struck, blushing all the way home
this night is flawless, don't you let it go
i'm wonder struck, dancing around all alone
i'll spend forever wondering if you knew
i was enchanted to meet you
y/n had her heels in her hand and held the hem of her dress in the other to keep it off the tarmac of her driveway. the stars adorned the night sky, sparkling fairy lights in a sea of tenebrosity. her mind replayed the nights events, casually skipping over her entertaining a conversation with girls she didn't know or like to dancing with rafe, a guy she just met but couldn't get out of her mind.
a blush peppered her cheeks in a dark pink, almost invisible in the dim light, but burning against her cheekbones. she walked with her mother, both still slightly tipsy and leaning on each other as they laughed, both for their own unspoken reasons. mr. y/l/n had bounded for the front door as soon as the car and been put in park, immediately wanting to get started on the deal he had just closed with rafe's father.
she fell against her soft mattress, like laying on a cloud as her mind was playing her hour with rafe that felt like a minute on repeat like a broken record. she was wonderstruck at the idea of himâmaybe the people here weren't so bad.
she found a recording of the song the chamber orchestra was playing while she was slow dancing with rafe and played it on repeat as she changed into pajamas and washed off her makeup. her hips swaying off their own accord and her head moving side to side as she danced in her room all alone.
falling against her comforter once again, her eyes traced the glow-in-the-dark stickers she pasted to her ceiling the moment she entered her room in the new house. she followed the edges of each star, forming constellationsâsimilarly to the flecks of gold and olive and in rafe's turquoise eyes.
as she drifted into a sleep, her mind stuck to rafe, wondering if he knew just how enchanted she was to meet him.
đ Family (Christmas Morning) đ
The last chapter to the 12 Days of Peraltiago Iâve been writing!
Summary: It's Christmas morning at the Peralta-Santiago household!
Read on AO3
Or
Amy had the best memories of Christmas morning; waking up to the smell of her motherâs cooking, the excitement to open up presents that would have her up earlier than ever, rushing to wish her parents a Merry Christmas before trying to sneak a present, betting with her brothers on who could finish breakfast the fastest, and then the opening of presents that every kid looked forward to. She would remember Christmases where she would sit in her dadâs lap waiting for him to figure out how to assemble the elaborate dollhouse she had gotten as a gift and the other times she spent running around the house to stop her brothers from taking her presents to tease her, only do the same to them. But what she remembered the most was among the chaos of 8 children running around on Christmas morning, her parents always made sure that as the morning mayhem was over, they would pack themselves in their living room, and everyone would sit around, keeping their new toys aside for some time, playing games and singing together.
Jake on the other hand, had no holiday memories; his only excitement during the season was for winter break from school which meant no homework, he could stay up all late watching all his favourite movies and TV shows, and eating ice cream or anything else he whenever he wanted. The first few years he had tried to remember what his parents would do for the holidays only for nothing to come up in mind, perhaps because his parents were constantly arguing and if there were any happy moments, he had shoved them so far back in his mind with the horrible ones. All he remembered about the holidays was his mom leaving super early and telling him to wake up only for him to never listen to her, and the same amount of money she would always leave for him to order his favourite pizza for dinner. Christmas morning was like any other morning for him; just him all alone at home letting the time pass until he fell asleep on the couch. The one faint memory that made him smile was the brief moment he would wake up in the middle of the night to feel a blanket being put over him and his momâs whispered good night before she kissed his forehead.
Now they had had their own family and their own Christmas mornings.
The Peralta-Santiago Christmas morning always started off with Jake being the first one up as he let Amy sleep in just long enough for him to brew her the cup of coffee she needed every morning. Jake was never an early riser, but having kids changes how you sleep, in that now he and Amy got to sleep when the kids slept. But Christmas morning was the exception he always made for his wife and kids.
He always heard Amyâs reminiscent stories about how she loved waking up the smells of cinnamon and sugar, that made her want to run to the kitchen, and he knew it wasnât the smells of Cinnamon Toast Crunch he would eat on Christmas morning that she was talking about. Jake knew he wasnât a great cook, but he also knew he wished his kids would one day grow up and tell happy stories about Christmas â that when they thought of dad on Christmas, it would bring a smile to their face, not a sadness.
So dutifully, he would plug in the fancy earbuds Amy had bought him as a gift two years ago (even after they promised no big gifts in preparing for their daughterâs arrival) and began making breakfast for his family. Jamming out to Taylor Swift, he rolled up the sleeves of his reindeer pajama tops to make the pancakes his wife and kids loved. Diligently working in the kitchen, he didnât notice when Amy had walked into the kitchen.
She had woken up to an empty bedside and today was the only time she didnât mind, knowing there was a steaming hot cup of coffee waiting for her in the kitchen along with her husband (who she would describe just like that coffee). Arms wrapped around herself to keep from the cold as she watched Jake busy at work, using the same focus he used when he was at work to place cinnamon rolls made by his best friend into the oven, which she knew was because she had made a passing comment about loving them. Walking up to him as he turned back to his pancakes, he looked around their kitchen and understanding exactly what he was looking for â which being married for 7 year does â she picked up the cookie cutters off the dish rack. Wrapping her arms around him, stopping him in his search with a smile, she held the two metal objects in front of him.
âSnowman for Bella and gingerbread man for Mac.â
Turning to face after taking the cookie cutters, Jake found himself engulfed in his sleepy wifeâs arms and he wished he could have stayed there for the entire day as she leaned in to kiss him.
âMerry Christmas sweetheart.â He mumbled into the top of her while she rested her head on his chest, their fronts meeting so he could put his arms around her.
âMerry Christmas babe.â She placed her lips against his neck, holding him tight knowing this was moment of peace before their kids woke up and there chaotic Christmas cheer in their home.
Finally parting back from him when a yawned escaped her, Amy leaned against the counter, watching Jake chuckling in his own amusement as he poured chocolate chip pancake batter filling the outlines of the cookie cutter on the pan, making breakfast in festive shapes for his kids. He really was one of those dads and it took everything in her power to not pull his cheeks, realizing he was above and beyond what either of their dads every did. Seeing him yawn, she forwarded her mug towards him, which he absentmindedly sipped from too busy with his pan. Amy wasnât lying when she later told their kids it looked like he would once again being fed the gross jellybean flavours from their BeanBoozled game. Quickly apologizing as she bit her tongue to hold back her laugh, she fixed him his type of coffee as he started making pancakes for her sans chocolate chips.
As he set up their breakfast table, Amy knew she had to double check she had put all the presents under the tree and all the stockings were completely stuffed. Doing her part in the living room, she picked up the cookies and milk the kids had left out for Santa and moved the coffee table aside knowing they needed the space for the kids to open their presents. Bringing out the Christmas themed throws and placing them on their couch, she looked around the house satisfied as Jake pulled out the cinnamon rolls, letting the fragrance of the spice fill their home. Only able to kiss his cheek as a thank you for bringing a piece of childhood into her Christmas morning, she felt his arm linking into hers as he proudly smiled on.
Walking into their sonâs room, they found it empty and look at each other with worried looks before they heard giggles from the room next door belonging to their daughter. Shaking their heads, they walked into Bellaâs room finding their two-year-old and five-year-old talking amongst themselves as if hiding a big secret. Clearing his throat, the two kids looked at them like they had been caught hiding cookies Bellaâs dresser again but relaxed as Jake brought out his deep Santa voice.
âMerry Christmas children!â
Separating themselves as the kids squeals jumping off the bed, Jake immediately kneeled down and had his arms opened for them to fill. Almost knocking the wind out of him as the two kids jumped to give him hugs, yelling Merry Christmas, Amy kneeled down in laughter as the kids turned to her.
âMerry Christmas Macaroon!â She kissed the top of Macâs head as he yelled Merry Christmas, clearly this being his favourite day after his birthday.
âMerry Christmas Bella!â She repeated the same with their daughter who had not inherited the same energy levels as Jake, rather was more like her mother and softly kissed Amyâs cheek before she wished her with an equally soft voice.
âMewry Chwistmas mommy!â
âWhat about dad?â Jake sat cross legged on the floor with now empty arms and a pout on his face that made Amy remember she had three kids at times.
âYou already got hugs!â And sometimes, she joined in the childish behaviour, especially when it came to getting their childrenâs attention.
Bella rushed back to Jakeâs arms, casually sitting on his lap and putting her arms around his neck as he grinned proudly at Amy.
âIâm her favourite!â
âMomâs my favourite!â Mac spoke up before Amy had the chance to say anything and Jake looked on offended as it was Amyâs turned to proudly smile while squeezing their son in a tight hug.
As the children laughed about their parents being silly again, Amy suddenly remembered how they all ended up in the same room and turned to the kids, knowing very well they were up to something.
âSo what were you munchkins doing?â
As if it was a cue that set them off, Mac and Bella ran back to her bed. Getting off the floor slower than their kids, Jake and Amy shared a look wondering what was going on, a knowingly look that they were about experience the joys of being a parent or the not so fun side of parenting.
For the first time, they watched both their children shyly shuffling their feet and keeping their eyes lowered as they forwarded a folded paper to them, Mac nudging his baby sister to say âMerry Christmasâ with him. Accepting what they realized was a card, they sat down on the tiny toddler bed, Bella once again climbing onto Jakeâs lap. Amy opened the card revealing Macâs kindergarten writing spelling out happy holidays and stick figure drawings of the four of them. He definitely had Jakeâs writing and artistic abilities, but what made the parents smile prouder than they had been earlier was the scribbled âfrom Mac and Belaâ, their daughterâs misspelled name written in a pen Mac had clearly picked up earlier this morning. They both knew this was probably a school craft Mac had made before the holidays, but his thoughtful gesture of helping his sister scribble her name onto it made it all the more special.
âThis might be the best present weâve ever gotten, donât you think?â Amy looked at Jake while the brother and sister hi-fived at their success.
âDefinitely! Itâs best present from the best children.â Sandwiching their kids into a hug, Jake looked up at Amy both wanting to tell the other about amazing their kids were. Carefully closing the card, Amy knew it was going to go up on the fridge and in a special box in her closet after the new year.
âNow pancakes are getting cold! No one want breakfast today?â Jake picked Bella up as she clapped her hands in excitement, watching Mac run out of the room knowing exactly what was waiting on the breakfast table.
Less than an hour later, the kitchen was full of empty dishes and fireplace held into empty stockings. Amy had taken up cleaning the kitchen while Jake made sure the kids would be bathed and ready for opening their big presents. They must have really worked out their timing in the last two years as Amy had just taken a seat on the couch when she heard her three favourite people running out of the rooms ready for presents.
Before they knew it, there was wrapping paper all over the place, the kids had been laughing as they uncovered all the gifts they had gotten. Mac was jumping in front of Amy, asking her to show him how his remote-controlled robot toy worked while Bella was once again seated Jakeâs lap, patiently watching him assemble her new activity table asking questions about every part he was adding on and then removing when he misread the instructions.
Looking eyes from across the room, Jake and Amy shared a serene smile. It was perfect & the day had just begun.
A short while later
As candy canes lay on the coffee table, a display of tiny gingerbread houses along their kitchen island, Jake & Amy heard their children singing along to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The bright lights reflected the ribbons, bows, and wrapping paper all over the living room carpet, which they walked past to stand under the mistletoe placed in the corner by their framed holiday cards to sneak a moment away from the kids busy with their toys.Â
Soon changed from their matching PJs to their matching sweaters and Santa hats, they sat down on the couch with their children in their laps. As snow gently further covered the city outside, the family of four was sipping on Jakeâs signature hot chocolate watching Christmas movies.
In the middle of watching Elf, when Bella was almost asleep against Jakeâs chest and Mac was busy in the movie resting on Amyâs arm, Jake glanced over at Amy. Sharing a soft smile with the woman who had every part of his life better, he looked down at their children momentarily before he finally said the words she had never heard in all the years of being with him.
âI love the holidays.â
Reaching past their kids, Amy grabbed his hand before they turned back to their movie. She blinked back a tear knowing he had always loved the holidays, but never had a family to make him realize the same. Snuggling in closer to their kids, she ran her free hand over Macâs hair, feeling lucky enough to be the one to build a family with him. And the gratefulness for their perfect little family just grow more with every Christmas morning.
Ch. 1: The Little Girls From Five Minutes Ago
Chapter Summary:Â The Doctor knows she's not the most typical companion but she's the one who needs him most. Avalon Reynolds has grown up knowing the Doctor's stories all her life. Although she's troublesome, she has a heart of gold that the Doctor cannot deny. He brings her, Amy Pond and Lena Reynolds into the TARDIS. But in doing so, he starts setting the seeds for the biggest stories of his lives.
In a child's bedroom, a young ginger girl and an ashy brunette girl were knelt down beside the only bed in the room. Both were meant to be praying, although the brunette girl didn't think they would be praying to a figment of imagination.
"Dear Santa, thank you for the dolls and pencils and the fish," the ginger was praying. She missed her third friend, who sat on her bed, rolling her eyes.
"Amelia, I told you, Santa isn't real," the ashy brunette kneeling beside Amelia said, her voice a bit scratchy. "It's just some ploy to get market sells up-"
"Shut up, Lena ," Amelia opened her eyes and gave her friend a small frown. She was sick of this argument because no matter what she said, Lena would still refuse to believe it. "Santa is real."
"Nu-uh," Lena shook her head fast.
"Lena stop that, you're going to get dizzy," the second ginger-haired girl on Amelia's bed ordered. She stopped brushing a barbie doll's hair that she was holding to give Lena a scolding look. "And then you'll have to take your medicine again and Dad and Mum are going to get crossed with me for it."
"Avalon, tell your sister Santa is real," Amelia said. She knew Avalon was much more open-minded than her twin sister was. She believed in everything that wasn't real.
"Of course Santa is real," Avalon mumbled as she brushed the barbie's hair, rolling her icy blue eyes like it should have been logical that this was the truth.
"Avalon, don't do that. Dad says Santa is just a ploy for the hum-"
"Lena, be quiet," Avalon immediately said before her sister said some words Amelia should never know about.
"Sorry," Lena looked down, realizing her mistake.
"Anyways, were doing something important," Amelia reminded, re-taking her praying position, "Santa, I promise it's an emergency. There's a crack in my wall..."
Avalon looked up from the barbie and stared at the wall of Amelia's bedroom where a big, nasty crack was sprawled on. As Amelia continued to pray, Avalon hopped off the bed and went to the wall. There was always so much trouble with the stupid crack on the wall. No one believed Amelia that there were noises on the other side...but Avalon did. She knew it was something alien and despite the fact she told her parents, they didn't do anything to help Amelia. But that was always the way Avalon's family acted - they tried to be human as best as possible to fit in.
"Avalon, you have to stay away from it," Lena said nervously. She was afraid of the crack like Amelia was but her sister was always looking for trouble and going straight for the danger.
Although to Avalon it was more of her trying to see what made things tick. Even then as she walked up to the wall she didn't bother about any calls from her sister warning her of danger. Instead, she tried to dig her finger into the crack, as if it would poke into the other side. She was sure there was another side - but Amelia would probably never guess that on her own.
"Avalon..." Lena called again, more like whispered. She always did that when she became afraid. She wished Amelia would stop praying and help her get Avalon back, but unfortunately it seemed like Amelia was sticking to it.
"Aunt Sharon says it's just an ordinary crack, but... I know it's not, because, at night, there's voices. So please, please, could you send someone to fix it? Or a policeman. Or..." Amelia stopped when they heard something crashing in the garden.
Avalon immediately spun around as Lena gasped loudly, terrified. All three girls remained silent for a moment, but then Avalon's eyes flickered to the bedroom window and she just couldn't resist.
"Lena, stay here," she ordered and rushed out of the room.
Amelia decided to go and see as well. She hurried to collect some shoes and a jacket. "Back in a moment!" she assured Lena then ran out.
Lena breathed heavily and stood to her feet, slowly walking up to the bedroom window. She curled her fingers over her sleeves as she looked out. Her eyes widened when she saw a...blue box...
~ 0 ~
Avalon and Amelia ran outside of the house, Amelia wearing a red jacket and matching wellies unlike Avalon who was outside in her pajamas and no shoes. The doors of the TARDIS opened and a rope with a grappling hook was thrown out, latching into a lawn roller. Both girls watched as one hand and another came over the edge of the box followed by the Doctor's head.
"Can I have an apple?" was his first question. "All I can think about - apples. I love apples. Maybe I'm having a craving. That's new - never had cravings before," he straddled the TARDIS and looked back inside, "Whoa! Look at that!"
"Are you okay?" Amelia asked. She once again missed her friend's reaction to the strange sight.
Avalon's eyes were fixated on the lopsided blue box. There were so many things that ran through her head, but the main one was 'I know him'. Needless to say, she was fascinated in an instant. "That's not the first question to ask," she distractedly said to Amelia before walking towards the Doctor and his box. "Are you the Doctor?" she demanded. For her, she had merely been asking but for the Doctor it was such a sight to see a little girl demanding something from him.
"Now how would you know that?" he asked, expressing bemusement.
"Because I do know," she said with the biggest smile on her face. "You're him, aren't you?"
If the Doctor had been amused before now he was properly entertained. "Yes, I am."
"Why is he soaking wet?" Amelia came to stand beside Avalon, trying to lean and see what was inside the box.
The Doctor swung both his legs to one side and sat properly over the box. "Just had a fall. All the way down there, right to the library. Hell of a climb back up."
"Are you a policeman?" Amelia curiously asked.
"Why?" the Doctor stopped. "Did you call a policeman?"
"No, she called Santa," Avalon replied fast. "But you're better! You can help!"
"Help with what?"
"The crack in my wall," Amelia eyed her friend weirdly, wondering why she was so excited over this strange man.
"What cra...?" the Doctor suddenly gasped and fell to the ground, hand clutching his chest.
"Are you okay!?" Avalon rushed to him, Amelia following in suit.
The Doctor pulled himself to his knees, but still struggled to get himself back on track. This regeneration sure seemed to be a wonky one. "No, I'm fine, it's okay. This is all perfectly norm-" but he stopped against his will and released a golden wisp of regeneration energy.
"What is that?" Avalon blinked with widened eyes.
Amelia, on the other side, felt a bit creeped out for a moment. "Who are you?"
The Doctor raised both his hands that were now glowing with the same colored energy. "I don't know yet. I'm still cooking. Does it scare you?"
"Nothing scares me," Avalon proudly said. "Especially not you!"
"It just looks...weird," Amelia thought the man didn't look quite menacing, at least not the way her aunt described strangers.
"No, no, no," the Doctor shook his head at them both. "I meant the crack in your wall," he nodded to Amelia. "Does it scare you?"
"Yes," Amelia said quietly.
"There's something there, I know it," Avalon was the complete opposite once again. She was excited to know that now they would be able to discover what was really on the other side of the crack. Because that's what the Doctor did, she heard from her family - he helped!
"Well, then, no time to lose," the Doctor sprang into action. "I'm the Doctor. Do everything I tell you, don't ask stupid questions and don't wander of." But as soon as he strode away, he walked straight into a tree and was knocked backwards onto the ground.
Avalon skipped up to the Doctor and looked down at the man. "If you can be stupid and walk into trees, then how come you tell us not to be stupid?"
"Well, you're a nice one," the Doctor remarked, unable to stop himself from smiling at the girl.
With a smile of her own, she helped him up and brought him to Amelia's house with the help of the latter. As soon as they were inside, Avalon's twin sister, Lena, was waiting with fearful eyes by the threshold. When the Doctor saw her, she gasped and pulled back into the hallway.
"Lena!" Avalon went after her, leaving the Doctor with Amelia in the kitchen. "Lena! Lena, it's okay!"
"Avalon, you brought a stranger into Amelia's house!" Lena whispered frantically, her eyes filling with tears. "What if - what if he tries to hurt us-"
Avalon grabbed her sister by the shoulders, laughing a bit. "Lena, no, it's him. It's the Doctor! You remember the story, right?"
Lena made a face for the first couple of seconds. "The...the Doctor?"
"Yes," Avalon nodded her head, letting go of Lena's shoulders. "I don't know how...but he finally showed up again! Isn't that great!?"
Lena's eyes drifted to the kitchen threshold where they could both hear the Doctor shooting down the apple Amelia had apparently given him. "But...but if he's the Doctor, then shouldn't we call Mum and Dad?"
"No!" Avalon's eyes widened. "No! If we do that...then they'll want to talk to him like boring adults do. This is our time, Lena. This is our time to meet him and...and ask him about that day."
"But we can't do that," Lena said quietly. She leaned closer to her sister and whispered her next words. "Amelia doesn't know that we're not fully human."
"Okay," Avalon realized Lena was right and that they would be unable to fully ask the Doctor all of their questions. "But...but we can still talk to him, right? We don't need to call any adults, okay?" Lena gave a small nod of her head. Avalon took her hand and excitedly led her back into the kitchen.
Amelia was in the middle of giving the Doctor a small yogurt. He practically snatched it from her and ripped off the top. As soon as the yogurt went into his mouth he spit it out to the side. "I hate yogurt," he tasted the remnants of it in his mouth and cringed. "It's just stuff with bits in!"
"You said it was your favorite," Amelia frowned.
"New mouth, new rules," the Doctor excused himself and unceremoniously wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.
"Eugh," Lena crinkled her nose. "Mister, do you want a napkin?"
The Doctor laughed for a short minute and doubled over with pain. "Agh!"
"What's wrong with you?" Avalon asked him.
"Wrong with me? It's not my fault. Why can't any of you give me decent food!?" was the snappy response.
Avalon frowned suddenly, her eyes narrowing in such a way that it amused the Doctor how quickly she could put on an angry face for a seven year old. "You don't have to be mean. You're not supposed to be! That's not you!"
"Yeah?" the Doctor straightened up. "And just how am I supposed to be, then?"
"Nice!" Avalon tapped her head like it was obvious. "Just because you're hungry doesn't mean you have to be mean."
"Fair enough," the Doctor conceded, but he was almost sure the little girl was keeping something else. She carried herself with an aura of knowledge that apparently Amelia didn't know.
Sometime later, Amelia had begun to fry some bacon. Lena had been nice enough to give the Doctor a towel for his soaky appearance.
"Why are you wet?" she eyed him with a small frown. "Don't you know you can get sick like that? My Mum says the water is bad for you."
"No," Amelia looked over at her friend, "She says it's bad for you. You're the one that's sick, remember?"
Lena nodded. The Doctor eyed the girl and noticed she did look a shade paler than the two gingers. Her voice also sounded much softer.
When Amelia finished with the bacon, she slid the plate to the Doctor on the table and anxiously waited for him to taste it.
Once again, the Doctor had disliked her food. He spit it back on the plate and pushed it away. "Bacon. That's bacon. Are you trying to poison me?"
"But that's what you wanted," Avalon said, rather irritated he was being this childish. Not even her little brother was this childish.
"No, I did not want that!"
Amelia tried her luck again, and this time came up with some beans. But just as the previous times, when the Doctor took his first forkful of it, he spit it out. "Beans are evil. Bad, bad beans!"
"Ah!" Avalon waved her hands in exasperation. "You get one more try, mister!"
Amelia provided next some bread and butter.
"Bread and butter. Now you're talking," the Doctor rubbed his hands in anticipation while Amelia spread some butter over the toast. Amelia soon handed him the plate and wished with all her heart that this would be the snack he finally wanted. Because if not, she was pretty sure Avalon would kick him.
"Eugh!" the Doctor crinkled his nose but instead of putting the plate down like the last times, he walked for the backdoor.
"What's he..." Lena watched, confused, until he opened the door and threw the plate out to the garden.
"And stay out!" he shouted just as a cat hissed.
"Hey! That's my cat!" Avalon ran for the door but Lena pulled her back.
"It's not your cat," she corrected Avalon. "You're not supposed to feed it, remember?"
Avalon shrugged her shoulders and returned her attention to the Doctor. "I'm going to kick you if you keep wasting Amelia's food. Pick something already!"
The Doctor went straight for the fridge to find himself the right snack. He went down to the freezer and started pulling some boxes out until he let out a small 'Aha!' and took out a fish fingers box. Then he took out a container of custard.
"Gross," Avalon declared the moment she saw both items.
But, this time, it was the right combination.
Later, the three girls and the Time Lord sat around the table eating respective snacks. While Amelia and Avalon had taken to ice cream, Lena preferred some cut up fruit. The Doctor was the first to finish with his snack, and he did it with style. He picked up the bowl his custard was in and drank the remainder all in one go. When he put his bowl down, he found Avalon, who sat closest to him, staring at him with a funny look on her face.
"You're kinda gross," she remarked with such ease he laughed. It was clear she hadn't grasped the kind, polite manners all humans seemed so strict on. He was happy for that.
"Here," Lena reached for a napkin and handed it to him, gesturing he had a left over custard mustache on his face.
"Do you know how to eat right?" Avalon tilted her head, one hand supporting her cheek. "Or do you just prefer to eat like that?"
"Avalon," Amelia made a gesture for her to quit asking questions like that.
"What?" Avalon blinked, clueless of the meaning behind Amelia's gestures.
"Avalon? Is that your name?" the Doctor called the girl's attention.
"Mhm! Avalon Reynolds!"
"Do you know what your name means?"
"Oh! I do!" she dropped her ice cream spoon and began to explain. "It's part of the Arthurian legend! It's this small island-" she gestured with her hands, "-where King Arthur's sword was made and then later where the King recovered from a battle!"
"You know your stuff," the Doctor blinked, truly impressed with her knowledge.
"I know everything about legends and fairytales," Avalon boasted happily.
"She does," Amelia playfully rolled her eyes.
"Everything?" the Doctor feigned some doubt, even though he knew it was impossible for her to know everything about the topic. But she seemed so passionate about it he didn't want to cut it short.
"Mhm! I love fairytales. Do you like them!?"
"Yes I do," the Doctor nodded. "Do you have a favorite?"
"Sleeping Beauty," groaned the other two girls.
"I love the story!" Avalon agreed. "I've read it a hundred times!"
"Just the modern ones I assume?"
Avalon's smile turned into a confused one. "What do you mean? What else am I supposed to read?"
"Well...you know...there are plenty of other versions..."
"But those are not nice," Avalon crinkled her nose. She was well aware that many of her preferred fairytales had bad origins and she was not interested in ruining her vision of them.
"No, I meant, like the Brothers Grimm? Do you know them?" the Doctor judged by the blank face Avalon had that she did not know anything. "Okay, well, see those are one of the original ones. But actually, they based their version of Sleeping Beauty on the original French version. "La Belle au bois dormant".
Avalon tried to repeat that in one go but proved to be more difficult. "La Belle wa...La Belle au...La Be..." she shook her head, her ginger curls dancing from the movement. "I can't say that!"
"Maybe with some practice you can," the Doctor tapped her nose, making her smile again. "But my advice is go back in time for these classic versions of your fairytales. They're beautiful and they deserve some recognition. I know you'd love them."
Avalon beamed at the suggestion, taking it to heart...not that the Doctor would know until many years later. "Okay! I will! I promise!"
"Great, now we'll have to hear more about the stories," Amelia muttered but heard Lena chuckling.
"And you two?" the Doctor called to them. "What are your names again?"
"Lena," the brunette girl responded softly. "Lena Reynolds."
"Oh...you're..." the Doctor pointed between her and Avalon.
"Twin sisters," went both.
"Fraternal, before you ask," Avalon added after a moment.
"And you?" the Doctor gave a look at Amelia.
"Amelia Pond."
"Ah, that's a brilliant name. Amelia Pond, like a name in a fairy tale. I can see why you're friends," the Doctor smiled at her and Avalon. "So then, where exactly are we? Scotland?" he gestured to Amelia due to her clear Scottish accent, "Or are we in England?" he then gestured to the two English twins.
"England," the twins responded.
"Rubbish," Amelia muttered.
"So what about your mum and dad, then?" the Doctor once again looked between the girls to find out whose house they were in. "Are they upstairs? Thought we'd have woken them by now."
"I don't have a mum and dad. Just an aunt," Amelia answered.
"I don't even have an aunt," the Doctor said.
"But you had a friend," Avalon remarked, not that the Doctor understood very well.
"So, your aunt. Where is she?" he asked Amelia.
"She's out."
Now surprised, the Doctor's eyes flickered from one girl to the next. "And she left all three of you alone?"
"We're not scared," Avalon boredly remarked as she dug her spoon into her ice cream. "Besides, she said she would be back soon."
"I can see you're not scared," the Doctor wanted to add 'especially you' but decided against it. "Box falls out of the sky, man falls out of box, man eats fish custard, and look at you all, just sitting there. So you know what I think?"
"What?" went Lena curiously.
"Must be a hell of a scary crack in your wall."
Avalon snorted, clearly against the idea as well. "I'm not scared," she repeated and stuck her spoon with ice cream into her mouth, giving a casual shrug while the Doctor smiled again.
~ 0 ~
The three girls stood by the doorway while the Doctor examined the long crack on Amelia's bedroom wall. "You've had some cowboys in here. Not actual cowboys, though that can happen."
Amelia tossed an apple in her hand. "I used to hate apples, so my mum put faces on them." She turned the apple over to reveal a carved smiley face on it.
The Doctor returned and took the apple, giving it a small toss in the air. "She sounds good, your mum. I'll keep it for later."
"Where would you keep it?" he heard Avalon mumble under her breath with full blown disapproval.
He went back to the wall and pulled his sonic screwdriver from his pocket. "This wall is solid and the crack doesn't go all the way through it. So here's a thing - where's the draught coming from?" he ran the sonic along the crack then pulled it away to read the results. "Wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey. You know what the crack is?"
"Clearly we don't or else we wouldn't have asked," came Avalon's logical response.
"It's a crack," the Doctor began but Avalon once again cut in to make a remark.
"But that we clearly knew."
"Avalon!" Lena scolded, thinking her sister to be rude.
"I'm just saying," Avalon raised her hands. "Clearly we know that it's a crack so why does he have to say it? And of course we didn't know what the crack actually is or we wouldn't have asked him to come into the room and check it himself."
"Yeah, you want to be impressed then, Miss Reynolds?" the Doctor teasingly called.
"Mhm," the girl folded her arms and raised her head, trying to pretend to be far older and serious.
"Okay," the Doctor turned to the wall again and gently ran his fingers along the crack. "Here's something: if you knocked this wall down, the crack would stay put, 'cos the crack isn't in the wall. It's everywhere. It's everything. It's a split in the skin of the world. Two parts of space and time that should never have touched, pressed together...right here in the wall of this bedroom." He turned around to witness the clearly shocked look on Avalon's face.
"Woah..." she whispered.
"Impressed?"
With a wide smile, she nodded her head.
"Sometimes, can you hearâŚ"
"A voice?" Amelia immediately guessed and hoped he would say yes. Often times when she told her aunt, she was cast off as delirious or childish.
"Yes," the Doctor nodded and pressed an ear to the wall. When he heard a slurred, echoing voice, he pulled back and walked to the night stand where a glass of water was placed at. He threw the water to the side and then used it to enhance his hearing on the wall.
Prisoner Zero has escaped.
"Prisoner Zero?" he repeated.
"Prisoner Zero has escaped," Amelia drew on her knowledge. "That's what I heard. What does it mean?"
Prisoner Zero has escaped.
The Doctor took a step backwards from the wall. "It means that, on the other side of this wall, there's a prison and they've lost a prisoner. Do you know what that means?"
"That it's cool?" Avalon was pretty much excited over the case unlike her sister and friend.
"Well yes, but...you also need a better wall," the Doctor pulled on the desk in his way and moved it to the side. "The only way to close the breach is to open it all the way. The forces will invert and it'll snap itself shut. Or..."
"Or what?" Lena narrowed her eyes a bit suspiciously. It all sounded too easy to fix what seemed like a big problem.
"You know when grown-ups tell you everything's going to be fine and you think they're probably lying to make you feel better?"
"Aha."
"Everything's going to be fine."
"Liar," Avalon playfully disapproved. "Can you fix the crack, then? For real?"
"I'm going to try right now," the Doctor promised. He faced the wall again and aimed the sonic at the crack. As it activated, the crack began to widen, filling the room with a bright light. Despite it being hard to look at, Avalon made an effort and caught what looked to be like cells on the other side. While the echoing voice grew louder and clearer, the Doctor hurried himself to get the crack to close.
"Ah!" Lena cried when a giant blue eyes peered through the crack. "Avalon!"
But Avalon was fascinated with what she saw. Even Amelia was curious of what exactly they were looking at.
A small ball of light shot through the crack and seemingly struck the Doctor. As he fell back against the bed, the crack sealed right up.
"What just happened!?" Lena fearfully asked, refusing to let go of her sister's hand. "Is it...is it gone!? Is it coming back!? Is it going to hurt us!?"
"Nah," the Doctor got up from his fall and viewed the wall without the crack. "See? Told you it would close. Good as new."
"But that thing..." Avalon's eyes were glued to the wall. "It kept saying something about a prisoner. Is its guard or something?"
"Whatever it was, it sent me a message," the Doctor turned around and pulled out the psychic paper for them to see. "Psychic paper, takes a lovely little message. 'Prisoner Zero has escaped'," he read off. "But why tell us? Unless..."
"Unless what?" Amelia saw the immediate change in the Doctor's face and frowned.
"Unless Prisoner Zero escaped through here. But he couldn't have. We'd know..." the Doctor wasn't quite sure he could stick with that statement and ran out of the room.
"But if he's here, then shouldn't we leave!?" Lena asked after they followed.
"It's difficult," the Doctor blinked rapidly, trying to get his mind to work with him. "Brand-new me, nothing works yet. But there's something I'm missing...in the corner..." he slowly turned, "...of my eye." He was interrupted by the sound of a bell clanging from outside.
"What is that?" Avalon came to the window to see what was making the noise.
"No, no, no, no, no, no!" the Doctor broke into a run and headed for the stairs.
"You can't run down the stairs!" Lena called out in vain from the rails.
"He's not gonna listen to rules," Avalon turned around and ran as well.
The Doctor came to an abrupt stop outside in the garden, just a couple of inches from the TARDIS. "I've got to get back in there! The engines are phasing, it's going to burn!"
"But...it's just a box!" Amelia eyed him a little like he was crazy.
"Boxes don't make those noises," Avalon said knowingly.
The Doctor worked fast to get the grappling hook and rope. "It's not a box. It's a time machine."
"What, a real one? You've got a real time machine?" Amelia's eyes looked from the Doctor to the box.
"Not for much longer if I can't get her stabilized. Five-minute hop into the future should do it," the Doctor looped the rope through the door handles.
Amelia looked at the twins beside her and then the Doctor, "Can I come?"
Avalon blinked at Amelia, "You want to go with a stranger?"
"Don't you do that all the time?" Amelia countered.
"It's different - they're not aliens!" Avalon snapped, a lot for a seven year old. "And besides, I know what I'm doing!"
Amelia rolled her eyes and looked at the Doctor for her answer.
"Not safe in here, not yet. Five minutes. Give me five minutes, I'll be right back," the Doctor hopped onto the edge and prepared to go inside.
"People always say that," Amelia frowned.
The Doctor jumped down to the ground and walked up to three girls, "Am I people? Do I even look like people? Trust me, I'm the Doctor."
"I do," Avalon said so automatically that the Doctor stopped and gave her a curious look. "I trust you'll come back."
"I'll be back in five minutes!" he promised and hurried up to the box. He climbed back and held onto the rope, giving the girls a smile before jumping in, "Geronimo!" the TARDIS doors slammed shut and the girls watched the box disappear.
Amelia dashed back to the house, going up to her room. Lena noticed the way Avalon was staring at the now empty space in the garden.
"Avalon, what are you thinking of?"
"That we actually just met the Doctor...and we let him go like that," Avalon shrugged.
"But...he said he'll come back, five minutes max."
"Mm," Avalon swayed her head. "If his box was malfunctioning...I think it might be a little more than five minutes."
Lena glanced back at the house, thinking of Amelia. "Should we tell Amelia?"
"Nah, she'll figure it out soon!" Avalon cheerily skipped back into the house.
~ 0 ~
The next time the TARDIS materialized back in Amelia's back-garden, it was fully daylight. The box's doors flung open as the Doctor emerged through billowing smoke, a cloth held over his nose and mouth, "Amelia! Avalon! Lena!" he ran towards the house, "I worked out what it was. I know what I was missing! You've got to get out of there!" he used the screwdriver on the locked door and finally got it open after a few tries.
A male nurse dressed in blue scrubs and a woman with medium-length ashy-brunette hair were following a second woman in a business suit down a hospital corridor into a ward room with two rows of unconscious patients. The second woman stopped in front of a patient, the brunette and male nurse beside her.
"So. They all called out at once, that's what you're saying?" the second woman asked, the pair beside her nodded, "All of them, all the coma patients," she flipped through the patient's file, "You do understand that these people are all comatose, don't you? They can't speak."
"Yes, Dr. Ramsden," the nurse nodded again.
"Then why are you wasting my time?"
"With all due respect, Dr. Ramsden, but I was with Rory when they called for you," the brunette spoke up with a soft voice.
"They called for me?" Dr. Ramsden raised an eyebrow.
"Yes, and I'm a witness," the brunette said.
Dr. Ramsden shook her head, she couldn't exactly take the woman's word as a plausible witness. Her condition probably made her a bit woozy and hallucinogenic.
"Doctor," the patient the trio stood in front of called softly, "Doctor."
The trio looked around as every other patient in the room called for the doctor...
The Doctor opened his eyes with a small groan, his head pounding for a second as his vision cleared up. Someone had hit him hard on the head at the staircase after he had come in searching for Amelia and her friends. He saw a female police officer dressed in a very short skirt speaking into her radio.
"White male, mid-20s, breaking and entering. Send me some back-up, I've got him restrained," she ended the conversation and looked at the Doctor, "Oi, you! Sit still."
"Cricket bat, I'm getting cricket bat..." he shook his head.
"You were breaking and entering."
The Doctor tried standing up only to realize he was hand-cuffed to the radiator behind him, "Well, that's much better. Brand-new me, whack on the head. Just what it needed."
"Do you want to shut up now? I've got back-up on the way!" the officer warned.
"Hang on, no, wait - you're a policewoman..." he had just realized that.
"And you're breaking and entering. You see how this works?"
"But what are you doing here? Where's Amelia? Avalon? Lena? Where are the girls?" he looked around frantically.
"Amelia Pond?"
"Yeah. Little Scottish girl. Where is she? I promised her and her friends five minutes but the engines were phasing. I suppose I must have gone a bit far. Has something happened to her?"
"Amelia Pond hasn't lived here in a long time."
"How long?"
"Six months."
"No, no, no! I can't be six months late! I said five minutes. I promised," the Doctor sniffed loudly for some reason, "Well, what about Avalon and Lena Reynolds? Where are they?"
"Not here," the officer eyed him as she walked away and reached for her radio.
"What happened to them?" he demanded, "What happened to Amelia Pond? Where are Avalon and Lena Reynolds? If they're not here then where are they?"
The officer ignored him and spoke into her radio, "Sarge, it's me again. Hurry it up, this guy knows something about Amelia Pond."
The Doctor tried the handcuffs again and sighed deeply when he saw it was no use. His eyes looked past the officer to the door from before, something was in there and that poor officer had no idea...
Dr. Ramsden was examining the first patient that had spoken, "I don't think they were even conscious..." she remarked.
"Dr Ramsden, there is another sort of, um, funny thing," the nurse, Rory, spoke up again.
"Yes, I know. Dr. Carver told me about your conversation. We've been very patient with you, Rory. You're a good enough nurse, but for God's sake!"
"I've seen them," he insisted.
"These patients are under 24-hour supervision! We know if their blood-pressure changes. There's no possibility you'd have seen them wandering in the village! Why are you giving me your phone?!"
Rory was holding out his phone to her, "It's a camera too."
"Is your friend going to back you up on this one too?" she eyed the brunette who just remained quiet at the accusation. Dr. Ramsden reached for Rory's phone when her paper beeped and so she took it out instead, "You need to take some time off, Rory. A lot of time off. Start now," Rory opened his mouth to argue but she cut him off, "Now!"
Rory nodded and turned to the brunette who offered a comforting smile, "I'm sorry Rory," she whispered as they walked out.
"I need to speak to whoever lives in this house now," the Doctor repeated for the third time to the officer.
"IÂ live here," she finally spoke to him again.
"But you're the police."
"Yes, and this is where I live. You got a problem with that?!"
"How many rooms?" he asked, deciding it was best to change the subject to get back to business.
"I'm sorry, what?"
"On this floor. How many rooms on this floor? Count them for me now."
"Why?"
"Because it will change your life."
"Five," the officer pointed to each door as she counted, "One, two, three, four, five."
"Six," he corrected, surprising her.
"Six?"
"Look."
"Look where?"
"Exactly where you don't want to look. Where you never want to look, the corner of your eye. Look behind you."
The officer slowly turned and saw the door that had definitely not been there for her a moment ago, "That's... That is not possible. How's that possible?"
"There's a perception filter round the door. Sensed it the last time I was here. Should've seen it."
"But that's a whole room. That's a whole room I've never even noticed..."
"The filter stops you. Something came a while ago to hide. It's still hiding. You need to uncuff me now!" the Doctor ordered but the officer was in a trance as she walked for the door at the end of the hall.
"I don't have the key. I lost it."
"How can you have lost it?! Stay away from that door!" he called but she kept going, "Do not touch that door!" she put her hand on the doorknob, "Listen to me! Do not open that..." she turned the knob, "Why does no-one ever listen to me? Do I just have a face that nobody listens to?" she entered the room, "Again...?" the Doctor searched his pockets frantically, "My screwdriver, where is it?"
The officer entered the room which was dusty and contained only old boxes on the floor. There were water damage spots on the walls, barely a scrap of curtain on the window and a table in the center of the room.
"Silver thing, blue at the end. Where did it go?"
"There's nothing here," the officer remarked as she carefully looked around.
"Whatever's there stopped you seeing the whole room," the Doctor called, "What makes you think you could see it? Now, please, just get out!" the Doctor ordered, sighing when the woman wouldn't listen.
"Silver, blue at the end?" she spotted said silver thing on the table in front of her.
"My screwdriver, yeah."
"It's here."
"Must have rolled under the door..." the Doctor shut his eyes at the bad luck he seemed to have even in this new incarnation.
"Yeah. Must have. And then it must have jumped up on the table..."
"Get out of there!" the Doctor shouted, "Get out of there!" but the officer reached to pick up the screwdriver, "Get out!"
The officer backed away suddenly when she thought she heard something. Behind her was an eel-like alien that hung from the roof. It was covered in goo and had a mouth full of sharp teeth. The officer looked one way and then the other but saw nothing.
"What is it? What are you doing?" the Doctor called, frustrated he was still cuffed.
"There's nothing here, but..."
"Corner of your eye."
"What is it?"
"Don't try to see it. If it knows you've seen it, it will kill you. Don't look at it," the Doctor said as the creature seemed to toy with the woman, "Do not... look."
And then she saw it...
The officer screamed, "Get out!" the Doctor ordered, the officer ran out of the room, "Give me that!" he snatched his screwdriver from her hand and used it on the door's lock before using it on his handcuffs, however it didn't work on his hand cuffs, "What's the bad alien done to you?"
"Will that door hold it?" the officer looked at the door with wide eyes.
"Oh, yeah, yeah, course! It's an inter-dimensional multi-form from outer-space - they're all terrified of wood," the Doctor rolled his eyes as he tried figuring out the screwdriver.
A bright light flashed around the edges of the door, "What's that? What's it doing?"
The Doctor wiped his screwdriver with his finger, "I don't know, getting dressed? Run. Just go. Your back-up's coming, I'll be fine."
"There is no back-up."
He looked up, surprised, "I heard you on the radio, you called for back-up."
"I was pretending. It's a pretend radio," the officer looked at him with a 'duh' look.
"You're a policewoman!"
"I'm a kissogram!" she removed her hat and let ginger hair cascade down her back.
At the same time, the door burst open and a man in blue-overalls holding the leash of a large Rottweiler stood at the doorway...the same man who was a patient at the hospital.
"But it's just..." the officer remarked as the man stepped out into the hallway.
"No, it isn't. Look at the faces," the Doctor instructed.
The man growled and barks while his dog remained impassive.
"What? I'm sorry, but what?" the officer looked down at the Doctor, completely shocked.
"It's all one creature. One creature disguised as two. Clever old multi-form. A bit of a rush job, though. Got the voice a bit muddled, did you? Mind you, where did you get the pattern from? You'd need a psychic link, a live feed. How did you fix that?" the Doctor questioned, the man only snarled back and advanced, showing its pointy teeth, "Stay, boy!" the creature stopped, "Her and me, we're safe. Want to know why? She sent for back-up."
"I didn't send for back-up!" the officer reminded.
"I know, that was a clever lie to save our lives," he whisper-shouted at her then looked at the creature again, "OK, yeah, no back-up! And that's why we're safe. Alone, we're not a threat to you. If we had back-up, then you'd have to kill us!"
"Attention, Prisoner Zero. The human residence is surrounded. Attention Prisoner Zero. The human residence is surrounded."
"What's that?" the woman asked and looked around.
"That would be back-up," he answered her, "OK, one more time. We do have back-up and that's definitely why we're safe," he said to the creature.
"Prisoner Zero will vacate the human residence or the human residence will be incinerated."
"Well, safe apart from, you know, incineration..."
The creature turned into one of the other rooms. The Doctor banged his screwdriver on the floor in the hopes it would work again, "Work, work, work. C'mon."
The creature had gone out to one of the windows and looked outside.
The Doctor finally got his screwdriver to work and used it on the handcuffs, "Run!" he said to the woman as he jumped to his feet, "Run!" he pushed her towards the stairs and quickly made their way down.
They ran outside of the house where the Doctor used the screwdriver on the door, "Kissogram?" he asked her.
"Yes!"
"Why'd you pretend to be a policewoman?" he stood straight.
"You broke into my house! It was this or a French maid!" she followed him away from the house, "What's going on? Tell me! Tell me!"
The Doctor had gone up to the TARDIS, "An alien convict is hiding in your spare room disguised as a man and a dog, and some other aliens are about to incinerate your house. Any questions?"
"Yes!"
"Me too," the TARDIS wasn't opening up for some reason, "No, no, don't do that, not now! It's still rebuilding, not letting us in!"
Prisoner Zero will vacate the human residence or the human residence will be incinerated.
"Come on," the officer grabbed the Doctor by the arm, deciding they were not going to be able to enter that small box.
"No, wait, hang on, wait, wait, wait. The shed," he ran up to the garden shed and examined as it as much as he could, "I destroyed that shed last time I was here, smashed it to pieces."
"So there's a new one. Let's go," the officer gestured again, becoming nervous.
"But the new one's got old. It's ten years old at least," he sniffed the wood before rubbing his finger on the wood and tasting it, "12 years," he concluded and turned back to the woman with newfound anger, "I'm not six months late, I'm twelve years late!"
"He's coming!" the woman's eyes flickered to the house.
"You said six months. Why did you say six months?"
"We've got to go!"
"This matters. This is important. Why did you say six months?"
"Why did you say five minutes?!" the officer snapped, blinking when she realized what she said.
"What?" the Doctor's mouth nearly fell open.
"Come on," she insisted.
"What!?"
"Come on!" she pulled him by the arm.
"What?" was all the Doctor could muster up as he was pulled away by a grown up Amelia Pond.
~ 0 ~
"You're Amelia," the Doctor stopped in the roadway and faced the ginger woman.
Amelia kept walking however, 'You're late!"
"Amelia Pond, you were one of the little girls!" the Doctor looked her up and down in disbelief.
"I'm Amelia and you're late."
"What happened?" he asked frantically.
If Amelia Pond was grown up...then what about the little Reynolds twins?
"12 years," Amelia reminded.
"You hit me with a cricket bat," he frowned, recalling that pain.
"12 years."
"A cricket bat!"
"12 years and four psychiatrists," Amelia crossed her arms and almost pouted.
Out of her, Avalon and Lena, she was the one who people deemed crazy when they spoke about the Doctor. Her aunt never believed her when she said the Doctor had been there at her sleep over. And, because of who Avalon turned out to be as the years went by no one really believed her either. Lena's illness had only gotten worse throughout the years and so they all blamed it as a hallucination or a very realistic dream. But neither of the Reynolds twins ever insisted like Amelia did. For some reason, the Reynolds twins hardly spoke about the night with anyone. But Amy wouldn't let the man go and so had been brought to numerous doctors and four psychiatrists to help her with her "condition".
"Four?" the Doctor raised an eyebrow.
"I kept biting them," Amelia mumbled.
"Why?"
"They said you weren't real."
"Alright, and what happened to Avalon and Lena, then? Where are they?" he asked as they entered the park.
Amelia sighed, "Lena? She's with Rory...and Avalon, well...probably running."
"Running? From what?"
Amelia looked away, preferring not to get into that whole matter. Avalon, while still very protective of her sister, had a very...tetchy attitude that got her into some issues often...
"Prisoner Zero will vacate the human residence or the human residence will be incinerated," the same voice from the crack now boomed over the speakers of an ice-cream van.
Amelia quickly jumped for the distraction, "No, no, no, come on⌠What? We're being staked out by an ice-cream van?" she ran towards it, leaving a very confused Doctor behind.
A woman with dark, ginger locks entered a pharmacy and walked straight towards the counter, her boot's heels clicking after her. She wore a pink sweater vest with a white buttoned-up blouse underneath, its white collars sticking over the vest. She accompanied it with white jeans and knee-length brown boots with small heals. Her icy-blue eyes looked around the place, her hand resting over the opening of her purse.
"Miss Reynolds, what can I do for you?" one of the pharmacists moved to help her.
"Tasha, I need a refill for the inhaler - actually we need a new inhaler."
"What happened to the last one?" Tasha raised an eyebrow.
"I may have broken it," the ginger mumbled.
"Avalon, how do you break an inhaler?"
Avalon Reynolds groaned, thinking it was obvious the only way she could break it. "Clearly on accident! Please, can I get a new one?"
"I'm sorry but the insurance doesn't cover a second one."
"Tasha please, I need it. I'm talking life or death, here!"
"I know, and I'm sorry," Tasha sighed, "Look, the inhaler would cost-"
"Whatever amount you're gonna say, I don't have it," Avalon leaned over the counter. "I need to replace it before Lena needs it. Can I just...I don't know...put it on...layover or something?"
"It doesn't work that way," Tasha shook her head with a sad smile and walked away to help another customer.
Avalon frowned and looked down at the clear counter. "I'm getting the inhaler," she mumbled, eyes scanning for the correct inhaler.
"What's that? Why are you playing that?" the Doctor demanded from the ice-cream driver.
"It's supposed to be Claire De Lune," the vendor replied, sounding confused as he switched, or tried to anyways, stations.
The Doctor picked up the player and listened, "Prisoner Zero will vacate the human residence or the human residence will be incinerated. Repeat, Prisoner Zero will vacate the human residence or the human residence will be incinerated."
The Doctor stepped away from the van and noticed the voice emerging from other technology people around them carried.
"Doctor, what's happening?" Amelia asked. The Doctor leaped over a low white fence into a front garden, leaving Amelia to run after him.
The Doctor entered the house where an elderly woman was watching the television. There was a blue eye that filled the screen that wouldn't disappear as much as the woman tried flipping channels.
"Hello! Sorry to burst in, we're doing a special on television faults in this area," the Doctor said then looked at Amelia, recalling her outfit for the day, "Also, crimes. Let's have a look," he took the remote from the old woman.
"I was just about to phone. It's on every channel," the woman saw Amelia and smiled. "Hello, Amy, dear. Are you a policewoman now?'
"Well, sometimes."
"I thought you were a nurse."
"I can be a nurse," Amelia shrugged, tugging her skirt lower.
"Or, actually, a nun."
"I dabble."
"Amy, who is your friend?" the women looked at the Doctor, confused.
"Who's Amy? You were Amelia," the Doctor frowned.
"Yeah, now I'm Amy," the ginger crossed her arms.
"Amelia Pond - that was a great name," he insisted, "All three of you had excellent, fairy-tale, names!"
"I don't like fairy tales and Lena doesn't believe in them," she reminded.
"I know you, don't I? I've seen you somewhere before," the old women studied the Doctor.
"Not me. Brand-new face..." he pointed a finger at himself, "First time on," he then turned for Amy, "And what sort of job's a kissogram?"
"I go to parties and I kiss people," Amy cleared her throat, "With outfits. It's a laugh."
"You were a little girl five minutes ago," the Doctor frowned. The little girl from five minutes ago was now kissing people?
"You're worse than my aunt," Amy said.
"I'm the Doctor, I'm worse than everybody's aunt," he quickly pointed at the elderly woman, "And that is not how I'm introducing myself," he picked up a radio and used the screwdriver on it. The same message was repeated on it in different languages, "OK, so it's everywhere, in every language. They're broadcasting to the whole world," he moved to the window and opened it up to look out.
"What's up there? What are you looking for?" Amy looked from behind, seeing nothing but a blue sky and white clouds above.
"OK, planet this size, two poles, your basic molten core...they're going to need a 40% fission blast," the Doctor turned to them as a young man entered the house, the Doctor walking up to him as he continued to talk, " But they'll have to power up first, won't they? So assuming a medium-sized starship, that's 20 minutes," the Doctor had to stand on his toes due to the man's taller statute, "What do you think, 20 minutes? Yeah, 20 minutes. We've got 20 minutes."
"20 minutes to what?" Amy asked.
"Are you the Doctor?" the man was a bit confused with all the eyeing, "He is, isn't he? He's the Doctor! The Raggedy Doctor. All those cartoons you did when you were little. The Raggedy Doctor, it's him," he looked at Amy.
"I know," Amy nodded.
"Cartoons?" the Doctor asked, bemused as he sat on the couch.
"Gran, it's him, isn't it? It's really him!"
"Jeff, shut up!" Amy snapped then looked at the Doctor, "20 minutes to what?"
The Doctor was flipping through the channels of the television again, the eye with its message on all of them,"The human residence. They're not talking about your house, they're talking about the planet. Somewhere up there, there's a spaceship and it's going to incinerate the planet. 20 minutes to the end of the world."
The same message was being heard in the pharmacy where Avalon was still in. She took a good look around and saw everyone distracted. In one quick, swift move, she jumped over the counter and reached for the inhaler from the other side.
"Hey!" Tasha exclaimed when she saw what was going on.
"I'm sorry, but it's for my sister!" the ginger hopped off the counter and dashed out of the pharmacy.
The Doctor and Amy were now walking down the roadway again, "What is this place? Where am I?" the Doctor eyed the small town.
"Leadworth," Amy replied.
"Where's the rest of it?"
"This is it."
"Is there an airport?"
"No."
"A nuclear power station?"
"No."
"Even a little one?"
"No."
"Nearest city?"
"Gloucester, half an hour by car."
"We don't have half an hour," the Doctor groaned. "Do we have a car?"
"...no."
"Well, that's good! Fantastic, that is. 20 minutes to save the world and I've got a post office. And it's shut! What is that?" the Doctor violently pointed at a small pond.
"It's a duck pond," Amy followed him up to the pond.
"Why aren't there any ducks?"
Amy groaned, "Not you too," he looked back at her with a questioning look. She sighed, "Avalon asks the same thing."
"She was one smart cookie," he smiled, "She's right to ask cos if it doesn't have any ducks..."
"...then how do we know it's a duck pond?" Amy finished with a roll of her eyes, "Yeah, I know. She asks that and it frankly gets on my nerves."
The Doctor was about to remark on that when he had another regeneration tremor that made him sit down and clutch his chest, "I'm not ready, I'm not done yet."
The sky darkened up and made both look up.
"What's happening? Why's it going dark?" Amy frowned as the sun turned gray, "So what's wrong with the sun?"
"Nothing. You're looking at it through a force-field. They've sealed off your upper atmosphere, now they're getting ready to boil the plane," the Doctor stood up and looked at the field where all the villagers were taking pictures of the sun, "Oh, and here they come, the human race. The end comes, as it was always going to - down a video phone!"
"This isn't real, is it? This is some kind of big wind-up," Amy frowned.
"Why would I wind you up?"
"You told me you had a time machine."
"And you believed me."
"Then I grew up."
The Doctor groaned, "Oh, you never want to do that. No, hang on, shut up, wait! I missed it," he smacked his forehead suddenly, startling Amy, "I saw it and I missed it," and another smack, "What did I see? I saw... What did I see?" he focused real hard until he figured out what he had missed and turned to Rory, "20 minutes. I can do it. 20 minutes, the planet burns. Run to your loved ones and say goodbye, or stay and help me."
"No," Amy said instead.
"I'm sorry?"
"No!" she grabbed him by the tie and pushed him against a car as the driver stepped out. She slammed his tie into the door and locked the car with the remote.
"Amy! No! No! What are you doing? Are you out of your mind?"
"Who are you?" she demanded from him.
"You know who I am."
"No, really, who are you?"
"Look at the sky! End of the world, 20 minutes," he reminded, pointing up to the sky.
"Better talk quickly, then!"
"Amy, I am going to need my car back," the driver had remained at her side.
"Yes, in a bit. Now go and have coffee," Amy shooed him off.
The Doctor reached inside his pocket and tossed the apple to her, "Catch," Amy caught it and saw the same smile face carved onto it, "I'm the Doctor. I'm a time traveller. Everything I told you, Avalon and Lena, 12 years ago is true. I'm real. What's happening in the sky is real, and if you don't let me go now, everything you've ever known is over."
"I don't believe you..."
He gripped her wrist, "Just 20 minutes. Just believe me for 20 minutes. Look at it. Fresh as the day you gave it to me. And you know it's the same one," Amy studied the apple for a second and looked up at him, "Amy, believe for 20 minutes."
Amy unlocked the car door, "What do we do?"
"What do we do?"
"Stop that nurse!" the Doctor ran for Rory the nurse.
"Where is she, Rory?" Avalon was now standing beside Rory Williams, her best friend, losing her patience as the man continued to take a picture of another man with his dog.
"I sent her to Amy's," Rory replied as he went for another picture. "I thought you would be there. And..." his eyes had caught something in Avalon's hand, "...what's that-" but he couldn't finish due to the fact the Doctor had ran over to them and snatched his cellphone from his hand.
"The sun's going out, and you're photographing a man and a dog. Why?" he stood right in front of Rory who could only blink at the moment.
"Oh my god..." Avalon blinked and turned the Doctor around, a smile spreading across her face. "It's you..."
"Amy?" Rory frowned as Amy caught up to them.
"What do we have here?" Avalon asked the Doctor, the man severely confused as she eyed him up and down. "I thought you were gonna be late, honestly, but not by this much!"
"Who are you?" the Doctor frowned.
She smirked. "The Arthurian Legend...the island where King Arthur's sword was made..."
The Doctor's eyes widened as he realized who the second ginger was. "A-Avalon?"
"Hello, fairy tale man," she chuckled, "You're late! You know poor Amy's had to go to four psychiatrists because of you?"
"What? Hold on, what did you call me?"
"Well, I told her not to talk about you but he didn't want to listen-"
"Avalon," Amy crossed her arms and sent her friend a mock-glare.
"Right, what's done is done," Avalon shrugged her shoulders.
"Uh, hello, back to business? Twenty minutes?" Amy reminded.
"Oh, right, yes!" the Doctor turned back to Rory.
"This is Rory, he's a...friend..."
"Amy," Avalon frowned at the introduction. She wasn't surprised by it, but it didn't mean she was letting it go either.
"Boyfriend," Rory corrected.
"Kind of boyfriend."
"Amy!" Rory exclaimed, a bit hurt that that was his title all of a sudden.
"Man and dog, why?" the Doctor had ignored everything and kept a fixated look on Rory.
"Oh, my God, it's him..." Rory blinked, finally settling in.
"Just answer his question, please," Amy said.
"It's him, though. The Doctor. The Raggedy Doctor."
Avalon teasingly laughed, "Yeah, that's him. Is that the only pair of clothes you own?" she asked the Doctor.
"Shush up," he snapped, covering her mouth. Avalon made a gesture with both hands.
"But he was a story. He was a game!" Rory exclaimed.
"Ouch!" the Doctor jumped to the side, rubbing his palm while he stared in shock at Avalon, "Did you just bite me?"
"I can do more than that but I don't know you like that yet," she winked, making him immediately blush.
The fact she had even added the 'yet' in the end made it even more blush-worthy. He shook his head, though, when he remembered the planet was literally twenty minutes away from blowing up. "Man and dog," he sighed and looked at Rory, trying to ignore the pounding pain in his palm, "Why?"
"Because he can't be there. Because he'sâŚ" Rory began but the Doctor had finished with him in unison, "...in a hospital, in a coma."
"Yeah," Rory nodded.
"Okay that's weird," Avalon remarked.
"Lena is a witness," Rory lightly snapped, "She was with me when they started talking."
"Knew it. Multi-form, you see? Disguise itself as anything, but it needs a live feed, a psychic link with a living but dormant mind," the Doctor explained.
The multiform snapped and snarled at the group, "Prisoner Zero," the Doctor turned to face it.
"That stupid thing that gave my sister nightmares?" Avalon's eyes narrowed as she stepped forwards, "She couldn't sleep for a week after that sleep over. Oh, I'm gonna kill it..."
"No you're not," the Doctor grabbed her arm and restrained her.
An electrical buzz emerged from above and they looked up to see a spaceship flying over them, the same eye swiveling back and forth.
"What the hell is that?" Avalon frowned.
The Doctor slipped his screwdriver from his pocket and pointed it up, "See, that ship up there is scanning this area for non-terrestrial technology. And nothing says non-terrestrial like a sonic screwdriver," he flicked it on and caused chaos to shatter the village, "I think someone's going to notice, don't you?" Prisoner Zero barked as the Doctor lowered the screwdriver and aimed it at the phone box ahead which exploded. However, the screwdriver sparked and fuzzled which made the Doctor drop it to the ground, "No, no, no, don't do that!" and then the ship flew away.
"It's going," Avalon pointed.
"No, come back, he's here! Come back! He's here, Prisoner Zero is here. Come back, he's here! Prisoner Zero is..."
But Prisoner Zero turned into mist and escaped down the drain.
"Doctor! The drain. It just sort of melted and went down the drain!" Amy exclaimed.
"Well, of course it did," the Doctor sighed.
"So what do we do now?" Avalon questioned.
"It's hiding in human form. We need to drive it into the open. No TARDIS, no screwdriver, 17 minutes. Come on, think. Think!"
He ran up to the drain and was followed by the trio, "So that thing - that hid in my house for 12 years?" Amy asked as she looked down at the drain.
"Multi-forms can live for millennia. 12 years is a pit-stop."
"So how come you show up again on the same day that lot do? The same minute?"
"They're looking for him, but followed me. They saw me through the crack, got a fix. They're only late cos I am."
"And boy are you late," Avalon shook her head, "I was a bit curious myself to see what was inside that box," she admitted.
"Now, sport, give me your phone," the Doctor turned to Rory.
"How can he be real? He was never real," Rory was still in denial but the Doctor didn't care.
"Phone, now, give me!"
Rory handed the phone to the Doctor just to get him to stop shouting. "He was just a game. We were kids. You made me dress up as him," he said to Amy.
"That was a funny time," Avalon said, "I have lots of pictures if you're interested."
"I told you to delete them!" Rory frowned.
"I have many copies..."
"Avalon!"
The Doctor was looking through the pictures on Rory's phone, "These are all coma patients?"
"Yeah."
"No, they're all the multi-form. Eight comas, eight disguises for Prisoner Zero."
"He had a dog, though. There's a dog in a coma?"
"The coma patient dreams he's walking a dog, Prisoner Zero gets a dog. Laptop!" the Doctor pointed at Amy who took with wide eyes. "Your friend, what was his name? Not him-" he nodded to Rory, "-the good-looking one."
"Oi, you're still rude," Avalon shook her head.
"Jeff," Amy corrected him, not even the slightest bit upset with the Doctor's behavior.
"Oh, thanks," Rory mock-glared at her.
"He had a laptop in his bag, a laptop. Big bag, big laptop, I need Jeff's laptop-"
"Why are you holding an inhaler?" Amy suddenly realized that Avalon had been holding an inhaler in her hand the whole time. But it looked more like she was trying to hide it under her fingers. "You don't have asthma."
"I know but I needed it so I bought it."
Rory's eyes flickered from the inhaler to Avalon with a mighty suspicious look. "Ava..."
"Rory..."
"Avalon," Rory tilted his head, the sharper look on his face making Avalon sigh.
"Fine, I took it. But in my defence-"
"No! No defences! We know those don't work! You don't steal, period!"
"But it was for a good cause-"
"Stealing is never for a good cause," the Doctor frowned, his voice dark.
"Oh shut up, you don't understand my life, got it?" Avalon pushed past him and started to run.
"Avalon!" Rory called.
"You two, get to the hospital, get everyone out, clear the whole floor. Phone me when you're done," the Doctor instructed the remaining two, "I'll catch up to her."
"Avalon, wait!" the Doctor called after the ginger, "Avalon!"
"Leave me alone, stupid man!" she shouted.
"Oh," he let out a sound of annoyance as he turned her around, "Five minutes ago I was the fairy tale man. What happened to that?" A brief smile flickered on Avalon's face. "We have a world to save in less than twenty minutes and I need all the help I can get."
"Love to help, but I can't," Avalon turned around to continue walking. The Doctor, momentarily surprised, reeled her back. "Doctor! I have to find my sister and my brother!"
"You have a brother?"
"Mhm. His name's Gavin. And he needs me because my Dad is working, alright? I gotta go-"
"N-n-n-no wait!" the Doctor brought her back again. "I'm sure he's fine, Mum's probably taking care of him-"
"My mum's dead," Avalon revealed in a quiet voice, all emotion lost all of a sudden.
The Doctor blinked, not having expected that one, "Oh...I'm sorry..." he whispered.
"It was a couple years back," she rubbed away a small tear on the side of left eye.
"Sorry," the Doctor couldn't really figure out what else to say.
"Yeah," she heaved a sigh, "It was hard," she walked around him.
He raised an eyebrow, confused by her...lack of emotion? This was her mother they were talking about. He didn't want for her to cry but the way she acted was a bit cold and blank, like it hadn't affected her. He trailed after her, "Avalon? Where are you going?"
"Well, the police is sort of after me and you need a laptop, right?" Avalon looked back, her arms crossed, "C'mon, then."
"And your brother?"
"Well, let's be honest, he'll probably be more scared if the cops come by my house instead. So, c'mon!"
Jeff was laying on his bed using his laptop when the Doctor and Avalon burst inside the room, "Hello. Laptop, give me!" the Doctor wiggled his hands as he walked up to Jeff.
"Sorry about that, he's still rude," Avalon shook her head.
"And you're apparently a thief," the Doctor shot back, not too sure if he was playing or really upset that the little girl who was in love with fairy tales...grew up to be a thief?
"No, no, no, no, wait, hang on!" Jeff was refusing to give up his laptop.
"It's fine, give it here," the Doctor finally snatched the laptop and sat at the foot of the bed. "Blimey! Get a girlfriend, Jeff."
"We've talked about this, Jeff," Avalon sighed and sat down beside the Doctor.
Jeff's grandmother entered the room, surprised to find the strange man again with her grandson, and now with Avalon, "What's going on here?"
"The sun's gone wibbly, so right now, somewhere out there, there's going to be a big video conference call," the Doctor replied casually as he typed, "All the experts in the world panicking at once, and do you know what they need? Me."
Avalon's lips curled into an amused smile. "Well, now I know."
"Know what?" the Doctor stopped for a second to look at her.
"Oh that you don't know the definition of 'modesty'."
Frowning, the Doctor returned to the computer. "Ah, and here they all are. All the big boys. NASA, Jodrell Bank, Tokyo Space Centre, Patrick Moore."
"Ooh, I like Patrick Moore," Jeff's grandmother smiled.
"I'll get you his number, but watch him, he's a devil."
"You can't just hack in on a call like that," Avalon told the Doctor, "Even I don't do that."
"Cos then you're Dad would really blow his head off," Jeff muttered, Avalon shooting him a death glare.
"You shouldn't be doing any of that stuff," the Doctor mumbled. He held up his psychic paper to the webcam as the experts appeared on the laptop screen.
"Who are you? This is a secure call. What are you doing?" one of the men on the screen inquired.
"Hello. I know, you should switch me off. But before you do, watch this." The Doctor cracked his fingers and began typing anew, this time quicker to match his speedy ramble. "Fermat's Theorem, the proof, and I mean the real one, never seen before. Poor old Fermat, got killed in a duel before he could write it down. My fault, I slept in. Oh, and here's an oldie but a goodie - why electrons have mass. And a personal favorite of mine, faster-than-light travel with two diagrams and a joke. Look at your screens," the Doctor raised his hands, the biggest smirk possible sitting on his face. "Whoever I am, I'm a genius. Look at the sun. You need all the help you can get. Fellas, pay attention."
Avalon blinked, fascinated to see the Doctor in a whole new light. It was one thing learning and reading on him, but it was a completely different thing to see him in action. She loved seeing it in real life.
"Sir, what are you doing?" an expert asked the Doctor while he typed away on Rory's cellphone. Much time had passed and apparently they were nearing the solution.
"I'm writing a computer virus," the Doctor responded. "Very clever, super-fast, and a tiny bit alive, but don't let on. Why am I writing it on a phone? Never mind, you'll find out. OK, I'm sending this to all your computers. Get everyone who works for you sending this everywhere. Email, text, Facebook, Bebo, Twitter, radar dish - whatever you've got. Any questions?"
"Who was your lady friend?" Patrick Moore asked, even trying to peer around his screen.
"Patrick, behave!"
"What does this virus do?" another expert asked.
"It's a reset command, that's all. It resets counters, it gets in the wifi and resets every counter it can find. Clocks, calendars, anything with a chip will default at zero at exactly the same time. But, yeah, I could be lying, why should you trust me? I'll let my best man explain."
Avalon sighed dramatically when Jeff failed to speak up. "He means you, you idiot."
"What?"
The Doctor closed the laptop midway and glanced at Jeff. "Listen to me. In ten minutes, you're going to be a legend. In ten minutes, everyone on that screen is going to be offering you any job you want. But first, you have to be magnificent. You have to make them trust you and get them working. This is it, Jeff. Right here, right now. This is when you fly. Today's the day you save the world."
"Why me?"
"It's your bedroom. Now go, go, go!" the Doctor jumped off the bed and pulled Avalon with him.
"What? I'm coming?" Avalon looked around with surprise, "I can't leave! The police is looking for me!"
"Oh trust me, they'll be a bit too busy trying to figure out what the hell is going on," the Doctor shrugged and pulled her towards the door, "Oh and Jeff, delete your internet history."
"As if," Avalon snorted as they came outside. The Doctor zoomed past her into the street to start looking for some way to get to the hospital. When Avalon caught up, all she found was the Time Lord cluelessly turning one way and another. "Okay, what are you doing?"
"Looking for a car, isn't it obvious?"
"Not when you look like that," Avalon shook her head. "Clearly, you've never hijacked anything, have you?"
The Doctor stopped and turned to her, a smirk playing at the corner of his lips. "Oh, you don't even know."
Avalon matched his smirk for a second then ran down the street. "C'mon!"
"What, hold on, you're not going to steal something more are you?" the Doctor went after her.
Rory finished up talking to a nurse in the hospital and rejoined Amy who was on her phone, "Something's happened up there, we can't get through."
Amy redialed in frustration, "Yes, but what's happened?"
"I don't know. No-one knows. Phone him."
"I'm phoning him," she reminded and gasped when the line was finally picked up, "Doctor? We're at the hospital, but we can't get through."
"What did he say?" Rory impatiently waited.
"Look in the mirror," Amy turned to a mirror behind her and saw her reflection, "Ha-ha! Uniform!" she tied her hair up, "Are you on your way? You're going to need a car."
The Doctor drove a firefighter truck while Avalon held the phone, sitting in the passenger seat, "Don't worry, you know how good I am at acquiring things," she smirked.
"We're going to need to talk about that," the Doctor pointed.
She rolled her eyes, "Drive, fairy-tale man."
Amy and Rory ran out of the hospital lift and saw the corridors ahead of them were a complete mess. There were gurneys and tables turned over with scrubs and utensils sprawled all over.
"What happened?" Amy asked a nearby woman.
"There was a man. A man with a dog. I think Dr. Ramsden's dead. And the nurses," the woman replied fearfully.
"The Doctor asks if you're in?" Avalon held the phone and spoke to Amy again.
"Yep. But so's Prisoner Zero."
"You need to get out of there!" the Doctor called from his seat.
Rory turned to the woman and...noticed that the woman's voice was now coming out of one of the little girls she held hands with, "He was so angry. He kept shouting. And that dog, the size of that dog, I swear it was rabid.," Amy and Rory started backing away, "And he just went mad, attacking everyone. Where did he go, did you see? Has he gone? We hid in the ladies'..." the woman trailed off, "Oh, I'm getting it wrong again, aren't I? I'm always doing that. So many mouths..." the woman opened her mouth to reveal the sharp teeth, the little girls holding her hands following in suit.
"Amy? Amy, what's happening?" Avalon repeatedly asked, hearing odd voices from the other line.
"We're in the coma ward. But it's here, it's getting in," Amy spoke, she and Rory backing away from the door of the ward that was shut with a broom through its handles.
"Which window are you at?" the Doctor called.
"How is that important?" Amy heard Avalon snap.
"Just tell me!"
"Uh, uh," Amy looked around, "First floor on the left, fourth from the end."
Prisoner Zero broke through the door, still disguised as the woman, "Oh, dear. Little Amelia Pond. I've watched you grow up. 12 years, and you never even knew I was there. Little Amelia Pond, waiting for her magic Doctor to return, but not this time, Amelia," she opened her mouth.
Amy's phone beeped and showed a message from the Doctor reading 'Duck!". Amy then heard the sirens nearing and pushed Rory down in time as a ladder broke through the window. The Doctor and Avalon climbed up the ladder and jumped inside the room.
"Right! Hello! Am I late? No, three minutes to go. So still time," the Doctor exclaimed.
"That's a first, you're on time," Avalon remarked.
"Time for what, Time Lord?" Prisoner Zero asked, smirking.
"Take the disguise off. They'll find you in a heartbeat. Nobody dies," the Doctor ordered.
"The Atraxi will kill me this time. If I am to die, let there be fire."
"OK. You came to this world by opening a crack in space and time. Do it again - just leave."
"I did not open the crack."
"Somebody did. And I'd like a word with them," Avalon frowned, "It affected my sister, speaking of..." she turned back to Amy and Rory, "...I need to go and find her."
"Leave her, if she's going to Amy's house that'll probably be safer than here," Rory reminded.
"She's right," the Doctor agreed, his gaze locked on prisoner zero, "Now about those cracks..."
"The cracks in the skin of the universe - don't you know where they came from? You don't, do you?" Prisoner Zero took the voice of the little girls, "The Doctor in the TARDIS doesn't know. Doesn't know, doesn't know! The universe is cracked. The Pandorica will open. Silence will fall."
A clicking sound distracted the Doctor from actually paying attention, he looked at the wall and smiled, "And we're off! Look at that. Look at that! Yeah, I know, just a clock, whatever. But do you know what's happening right now? In one little bedroom, my team are working. Jeff and the world. And do you know what they're doing? They're spreading the word all over the world, quantum fast. The word is out. And do you know what the word is? The word is zero. Now, me, if I was up in the sky in a battleship, monitoring all Earth communications, I'd take that as a hint. And if I had a whole battle fleet surrounding the planet, I'd be able track a simple old computer virus to its source in, what, under a minute?" he took his mobile from the pocket, "The source, by the way, is right here," a bright light shined through the windows, "Oh! And I think they just found us!"
"The Atraxi are limited. While I'm in this form, they'll still be unable to detect me. They've tracked a phone, not me," Prisoner Zero said, undisturbed.
"Yeah, but this is the good bit. I mean, this is my favorite bit. Do you know what this phone is full of?" the Doctor smugly waved Rory's cellphone. "Pictures of you. Every form you've learned to take, right here. Oh, and being uploaded about now. And the final score is - no TARDIS, no screwdriver - two minutes to spare," the Doctor held out his arms to the trio behind him, "Who da man?"
"Do yourself a favor and never say that again," Avalon replied, her hand in her hair as she looked away.
"Fine," the Doctor rolled his eyes.
"Then I shall take a new form," Prisoner Zero spoke, making the Doctor turn back.
"Oh, stop it, you know you can't. Takes months to form that kind of psychic link."
"And I've had years..."
Amy fell to the floor suddenly, Rory quickly dropping by her side. The Doctor and Avalon turned at the sound of the thud and hurried over.
"What's happened?" Avalon frantically asked.
The Doctor put his hands on Amy's face, "You've got to hold on. Amy! Don't sleep! You've got to stay awake, please."
Rory was looking behind them to Prisoner Zero, "Doctor?"
Avalon followed his gaze back, "Oh...well that's interesting."
The Doctor looked back also and frowned, "Well, that's rubbish. Who's that supposed to be?"
"What?" Avalon's head snapped to him, "That's you, moron!"
"Me?" the Doctor looked down at himself. "Is that what I look like?"
"You mean you don't know?" she raised an eyebrow, "You're kidding me right?" but by the face the Doctor made she knew he wasn't, "Stupid!"
"I've had a busy day thank you very much," he stood up and spoke to Prisoner Zero, "Why me, though? You're linked with her. Why are you copying me?"
"I'm not. Poor Amy Pond. Still such a child inside," Amelia Pond moved around the fake Doctor, "Dreaming of the magic Doctor she knows will return. What a disappointment you've been."
"No, she's dreaming about me cos she can hear me," he dropped back to Amy's side, "Amy, don't just hear me, listen. Remember the room, the room in your house you couldn't see? Remember you went inside. I tried to stop, but you did. You went in the room. You went inside. AmyâŚdream about what you saw."
A bright light started taking over again, "No... no... No!" prisoner Zero cried as it started transforming back to its regular form.
"Well done, Prisoner Zero. A perfect impersonation of yourself," the Doctor looked up at it, smirking.
Prisoner Zero is located. Prisoner Zero is restrained.
"Silence, Doctor. Silence will fall," Prisoner Zero said as it disappeared.
The Doctor ran for the window and dialed on Rory's cellphone.
"The sun - it's back to normal, right? That's... That's good, yeah? That means it's over," Rory said, trying to get some confirmation from anyone but the Doctor kept dialing and so was Avalon now on her phone. He felt Amy stir in his arms and looked down, "Amy? Are you OK? Are you with us?"
"What happened?" Amy asked.
"He did it. The Doctor did it," Rory replied.
"No, I didn't," the Doctor called back.
"What are you doing?" Rory asked, then looked at Avalon, "What are you doing too?" he asked her.
"Calling Lena," she stood up and moved away from them.
"And I'm tracking the signal back. Sorry, in advance," the Doctor explained.
"About what?" Rory dreaded to ask.
"The bill," the Doctor placed the phone over his ear and spoke, "Oi, I didn't say you could go! Article 57 of the Shadow Proclamation. This is a fully established, level 5 planet, and you were going to burn it? What...? Did you think no-one was watching? You lot, back here. Now!" he tossed the gone back to Rory, "OK. Now I've done it," he headed out of the war.
"Did he just bring them back? Did he just save the world from aliens and then bring all the aliens back again?" Rory called after them, Amy following the Doctor out.
"Rory, hush, I'm on the phone," Avalon also walked out.
"Avalon I don't know what's going on but there was this big spaceship with a large eye like the one on Amy's wall and I'm scared and I don't know-"
"Lena, Lena, Lena, calm down! It'll be okay!" Avalon hushed her twin sister down through the phone while following the Doctor down a corridor in the hospital, "Rory said you were headed for Amy's place, yeah?"
"Mhm," Lena sniffled.
"Okay, then stay there, it's completely safe now. I'll be there as soon as I can."
"Okay..."
Avalon hung up and glared at the Doctor ahead of her, "You better have a good reason for bringing back that spaceship, stupid man! Lena is scared out of her wits and she's all alone!"
"She'll be less afraid when she finds out that the spaceship will never return," he countered calmly.
"Where are you going?" Amy asked.
"The roof. No, hang on," the Doctor stopped and entered a new room, a changing room.
"What's in here?" Avalon asked, confused.
"Nothing you'll be stealing, got it?"
"You're not gonna let it go are you?" she raised an eyebrow.
"You don't steal!"
"Well I have and I don't care!"
"That is not the little girl I met five minutes ago!"
"Twelve years happened and she's had to grow up, alright!?" she shouted, leaving an air of silence fall over them.
The Doctor admitted that was a true statement, but it didn't mean he was going to let it go so easily. Right now he would have to focus on the threatening aliens up in the sky, but soon as he was done he was going to go back with Avalon. "Fine," he said and turned for the racks of clothes.
"What are we doing here?" Rory questioned.
"I'm saving the world - I need a decent shirt. To hell with the raggedy. Time to put on a show!" the Doctor sifted through the racks, throwing things he didn't like to the side.
"You just summoned aliens back to Earth. Actual aliens," Rory insisted on reminding everyone of that pending, stupid action while the Doctor took off his tattered clothes, "Deadly aliens, aliens of death, and now you're taking your clothes off... Amy, he's taking his clothes off."
"Turn your back if it embarrasses you," the Doctor said, unperturbed with an audience.
"Are you stealing clothes now? And you're on about it with me?" Avalon raised an eyebrow, turning around as Rory already had, "I didn't take you for being a hypocrite, you know."
"Oi, most of these people are dead. Now, that's not something I like but I'm in need of new clothes so button it up, red!"
Avalon rolled her eyes and looked at Amy, "Excuse you," Amy had remained looking at the Doctor, "You have a boyfriend," and she turned Amy around.
The Doctor was now wearing a pink and white, buttoned-up, long-sleeved, plaid shirt with braces and several ties draped around his neck. He walked out onto the roof with Rory, Avalon and Amy standing a bit back.
"So this was a good idea, was it? They were leaving," Amy reminded.
"Leaving is good. Never coming back is better. Come on, then! The Doctor will see you now," he called out and the eye from the spaceship disconnected and scanned him.
"You are not of this world."
"No, but I've put a lot of work into it," the Doctor said, casually looking at a tie then holding it out, "I don't know. What do you think?"
"Is this world important?"
"Important? What's that mean, important?" he tossed a tie back and Rory caught it, "6 billion people live here - is that important? Here's a better question. Is this world a threat to the Atraxi?" he threw another tie which landed on Avalon's shoulder, making her sigh in annoyance, "Well, come on. You're monitoring the whole planet. Is this world a threat?"
The Atraxi projected a hologram of the Earth with scenes of its history, "No."
"Are the peoples of this world guilty of any crime by the laws of the Atraxi?"
"No."
"OK. One more. Just one. Is this world protected? Because you're not the first lot to come here," as the Doctor spoke, a projection showed his various enemies, "Oh, there have been so many! And what you've got to ask is... what happened to them?" the projection started playing out his entire incarnations beginning with his first all the way to his current, "Hello. I'm the Doctor. Basically... run!"
"Wow," Avalon breathed in fascination. As the ship departed, Avalon sighed of relief, "And that's my cue to get the hell out of here," she pulled out her inhaler and dashed out.
Amy and Rory cheered behind the Doctor, both laughing and hugging. The Doctor felt something nearly burn in his pocket and reached inside to pull out the TARDIS key that glowed.
"Is that it? Is that them gone for good? Who were they?" Amy's laughter faded as she saw that the Doctor wasn't there anymore.
The Doctor ran into Amy's back garden up to the TARDIS, seeing the box had taken a new shade of blue, "OK! What have you got for me this time?" he opened the door and stepped inside, completely amazed at the new interior, " Look at you! Oh, you sexy thing! Look at you!"
The interior was now sporting bright shades of oranges with its coral design on the walls. The console stood on a raised, glass platform with steps leading up to it, even creating a lower level underneath it. There remained a second floor with stairs going up to more corridors.
The Doctor ran up to the console and flicked on the screen, pretty much turning everything on just to see how it would work. However, the screen directed itself with something quite interesting that made the Doctor stop...
"You have to let go! Please! She needs help!" Avalon was kicking and screaming as a group of policemen and women were dragging her away.
"Let her go," the grown up Lena Reynolds cried after them, slowing down when she felt her air begin to struggle.
"Refusing arrest will be added to your charges," one of the policemen warned Avalon.
"I don't care, you blundering idiot! My sister needs me!" Avalon actually tried biting them just to see if she could get free for a moment.
"What's going on!?" the Doctor ran out of Amy's garden into the sidewalk, in the middle of Avalon being taken away and Lena on his other side, struggling to stay on her feet.
"Doctor, please! Help her!" Avalon managed to reach inside her pocket and tried tossing the inhaler, "It's for her, please help her!"
"Avalon..." Lena dropped to her knees, her hand on her chest as she breathed heavier and faster.
"Say you'll help her, promise you'll help her! Promise me!" Avalon shouted, still resisting the police officers.
The Doctor nodded, "I promise," he reached for the inhaler and looked at Avalon. She'd stolen for Lena...she'd stolen for her sister. That was her good reason...
Avalon stopped struggling when she saw him move to Lena's side.
"Avalon Reynolds, you are under arrest," a police officer hand cuffed her behind her back. But Avalon didn't care, she watched her sister be cared for her. That was all she needed to go in peace.
"Here, take this," the Doctor handed the inhaler to Lena, helping her sit up a little.
Lena blinked when she looked at the man beside her, "You're...you're him..." she smiled, taking the inhaler from his hands, "...you're the fairytale man."
The Doctor nodded and encouraged her to use the inhaler. He could tell her voice had somewhat settled since he'd last seen her. It didn't sound scratchy but it still sounded a bit fragile. He looked to where Avalon had been and saw she and the police officers were gone. He looked back to Lena, "C'mon, you should have something to drink."
"Oh, but...my sister..." Lena took his hand and used it for support as she stood up, "...I can't leave her. My dad will be fuming when he finds out she's in jail again."
"Again?"
Lena nodded, "We're no longer little girls, fairy tale man. Avalon's changed...and it's my fault."
The Doctor looked at her curiously, "How so?"
Lena opened her mouth to respond when she collapsed, falling forwards. He caught her and scooped her into his arms, deciding to bring her into the TARDIS for a good check up.
Lena found herself in a white room she'd never seen before. She laid on a bed and turned her head to see the Doctor working on a machine, "What's going on?" her voice trembled, "Fairy tale man, what is this?"
"Don't be afraid," he quickly hurried to her side, "I only gave you a bit of medicine to help with that asthma and then I sort of ran tests on you."
"I'm sick, there's your result," she sat up and looked around.
"I think you're forgetting the part where it said you're not naturally human."
Lena looked at him with surprise, "How-how did you-"
"I'm an alien, Lena. I sort of have the machines to figure it out with. You're human alright," he took a seat beside her, "But...not like the rest of the humans on this planet," he smiled softly, "You're from New Earth."
"Yeah..."
"You traveled back in time," the Doctor said, quite impressed with the fact, "How come?"
Lena shrugged, "Don't know. Mum and Dad used to say they preferred an earth like this. A calm environment to raise children in."
"I like this earth too. Though I'm still a bit intrigued by your family."
"How come?"
"Cos of your illness. See, the New Earth humans don't have the type of immune system you have, and I assume your family has."
"We're from an evolved group of humans. My parents said that their ancestors arose from a group in a hospital, can you believe that?"
The Doctor raised an eyebrow, intrigued yet confused, "A hospital?"
"Yeah, it really was a fantasy story. Avalon loved it cos there was a hero..." Lena gave him a significant look, hoping he would understand that this was the origin point of her love for fairy tales, "...who cured them all."
The Doctor's eyed widened, "Oh...oh wow...that's a turn of events. Never thought what could happen then they'd start to reproduce." He ran a hand through his hair and began to smile. "And...and so that's why your sister knew me?"
"She loves that story," Lena sheepishly shared.
"Okay, so then...this is why your immune system has..."
"The humans you rescued evolved with the cures you implanted in their bodies until one day, they just walked with a little bit of a cure for every disease. We're not supposed to be sick," Lena explained, "But I was born with a mutation in my genes that makes my system attack itself and weaken my state."
"I'm sorry," the Doctor took her hand, "Believe me, I'm really sorry."
"It's not your fault, I just got what I got. I'm okay with it," Lena then sighed, "But my family..." she sighed again, "...Avalon. Doctor, please, just like you helped me, help her."
"What can I do?"
"Can't you get her out of jail or something? She can't go there anymore, not because of me. Help her please."
The Doctor nodded, "I'll see what I can do," he stood up, "But I want you to stay here and rest until I get back."
She nodded and let him go on his way.
Avalon was boredly sitting on the wooden bench in her cell, resting against the wall when an officer walked up and started unlocking it, "You're free to go," he said and opened up the cell.
Avalon stood up, confused, "What?"
"You're free to go now c'mon."
"How is that possible?" she walked out nonetheless. "No one's paid the fine yet."
"There was a request from her highness."
"The Queen wanted me free?" Avalon raised an eyebrow, not an ounce of belief in her.
"Apparently so, now do yourself a favor and get out of here, Reynolds."
Avalon sighed, "Yeah, we'll see."
She walked out of the cell corridors and into the front office to gather up her belongings. Out of the corner of her eyes, she could have sworn she saw someone watching her. She spun around, only barely catching the glimpse of a man with brown hair. She raised an eyebrow and took several steps after them, but she saw no one.
"Reynolds," one of the officers behind the desk called and she whipped her head back. He slid her purse back to her. "Stay out of trouble, will you?"
"Like I told Joshua in the cells, we'll see," Avalon briefly smiled and took her bag off the counter. She turned around and started walking out, never catching the Doctor hidden on the side.
"Avalon Reynolds..." he gave a small shake of his head, "...what happened?"
POSITIVE SPINS: NEW ARTISTS, NEW ALBUMS, AND NEW LIVE STREAMS THAT PUT OUR 2020 ON A BETTER TRACK
2020 proved to be one of the hardest years we have collectively gone through. Â While we didnât have live music to lean on when times got tough, these are the albums, artists and livestreams that got us through the rough patches and will carry us into a brighter 2021.
Listen to our playlist of Positive Spins!
BEST NEW ARTISTS OF 2020 (in no particular order)
THICK
âBrooklyn-based pop-punk three-piece, THICK, are not afraid to say (or sing) whatâs on everyoneâs mind - with a fierceness and confidence I can only aspire to assume. Sticking it to the establishment is the name of their game - take âMainsplain,â for instance - and they manage to do so with catchy chord progressions and an uplifting vigor. I canât wait to see whatâs next for the trio, and who else theyâll put in check.â - S. D.
Ela Minus
âBrooklyn-based techno-pop artist Ela Minus broke onto the scene this year with her debut album â acts of rebellion.â The Colombian-born musician has a background in emo bands, is a trained jazz drummer, and she wrote, produced, engineered, and recorded the album on her own. âacts of rebellionâ is moody and sultry, while still making you want to grab your friends and dance.â - K. C.
Arlo Parks
âWithout even having released her debut album yet, Arlo Parks has made a name for herself this year. Singles released throughout the year, paired with 2019âs EP âSophieâ and her slot as support on Hayley Williamsâ (cancelled) tour have boosted Arlo to a new level this year, that we can only assume will continue to rise in 2021 when her debut album drops.â - K. C.
Beabadoobee
âBeabadoobeeâs interesting name is only matched by her sound - bedroom-pop fused with nineties indie-rock, tinged with a tender, DIY aesthetic. Her track âIf You Want Toâ will have you singing along, while her single âShe Plays Bassâ will take you back to your hormonal, vulnerable, teenage years met with sublime nostalgia. Sheâs without a doubt a silver lining in 2020.â - S. D.
BENEE
âI first saw Aucklandâs BENEE at Rough Trade in October of last year - her sincere, to-the-point lyrics and quirky hooks instantly hooked me. You may know her track, âSupalonely,â which found popularity on TikTok during the height of lockdown, but BENEEâs sound isnât limited to the confines of one social media trend. In her debut album released this year, BENEE displays an uncanny ability to tackle alt-rock, hip-hop and electro-pop all at the same time, in an unbothered, endearing way - making her a âone to watchâ in 2020 and beyond.â - S. D.
Christian Lee Hutson
There isnât a lack of acoustic singer-songwriters out there, but Christian Lee Hutson is an important new voice. Hutson first full length album, âBeginners,â released this year, has a warm and honest quality to it. The production is subtle (thanks to producer Phoebe Bridgers), and so perfectly complements a simple, acoustic narrative. The result is a soulful, beautiful, and special work of music. - S. D.
Do Nothing
â2020 newcomers out of Nottingham, UK, Do Nothing have already made a big splash in the post-punk world. Releasing their first EP, Zero Dollar Bill, earlier this year, the band have been compared to Idles and are setting out on a similar path of success. Upon first hearing their earlier single Lebron James, countless fans are sure to be sucked into the world of Do Nothing.â - K. C.
Kate Bollinger
âI first listened to Kate Bollinger when she released I Donât Wanna Lose in 2019. I played the track Candy on repeat all year long. It has been so lovely to watch her grow into the artist she is today. This year she released an EP called A word becomes a sound, which quickly became one of my favorite releases of 2020. Her voice is so comforting. Whenever I listen, I feel like I am being coddled in a fluffy blanket with a cup of herbal tea and nothing could go wrong at that moment. I canât wait to see what Kate has planned for 2021 and beyond!â - L. S.
SAULT
âAfter a year of intense racial unrest in the United States, SAULTâs importance is more significant now than ever. Â With themes focusing around the Black Lives matter movement, this mystery soul-funk group has become more than buzzy in the music scene, and has earned a spot on tons of year end lists.â - K. C.
Sorry
âLondon-based genre-defying band Sorry released their debut album â925â this year, produced by James Dring (Gorillaz, Jamie T) which is already reason enough to pique the interest of most. The album certainly does not disappoint, with each song giving you a different taste of the many interesting sides of this up-and-coming group.â - K. C.
Honorable Mentions:
Gracie Abrams Remi Wolf Hailey Whitters KennyHoopla Jade Hairpins Jockstrap Model/Actriz Mild Orange Your Smith Neal Francis
BEST NEW ALBUMS OF 2020 (in no particular order)
Fiona Apple â Fetch the Bolt Cutters
âFiona Apple is fearless in this album. The song structures and sounds take you on a listening experience I can only describe as emotional in the best way. Eight years of waiting was totally worth it.â - S. D.
Fleet Foxes â Shore
âThis album had been bright spot in a difficult year. St. Annâs Church was the perfect location for their Colbert performance of Can I Believe You and the live stream will be the perfect holiday present. Ready to feel all the feels!â - K. A.
Khruangbin - Mordechai
âKhruangbin is one of my go-to bands, and âMordechaiâ has been heavy in my rotation in 2020. Itâs really a great album â I play it cover-to-cover and pairs well with a cocktail and cooking at home, infusing some needed spice and energy in what could otherwise be âjust another nightâ during a long, monotonous several months.â - C.M.
Moses Sumney - GrĂŚ
âThe highly anticipated second album from Moses Sumney, shows us more of the highly personal, raw and emotionally moving music we have some to expect from him. The cluster of emotions that Moses works through with his beautifully unique voice in this 20 song album give us a look into the complicated mind of one of the most interesting artists of the last 5 years.â - K. C.
Perfume Genius â Set My Heart On Fire Immediately
â*Bill Haderâs Stefan voice* this album has everything! From the heavy and distorted bass on âDescribeâ to the melodic harp stringing of âLeave,â to the dance ballad (is that a thing?) âOn The Floor,â Perfume Geniusâ album Set My Heart on Fire Immediately really does have it all. Each song feels vastly different from the next in tone, instrumentation, and influence â yet they all come together so perfectly to make this stunning album, all while showcasing his vocal depth and range. Thereâs a reason heâs called Perfume *Genius*, and that is because Mike Hadreas can take familiar feelings and turn them into unconventional pop ballads that feel both relatable, but new and exciting at the same time.â - R. E.
Phoebe Bridgers â Punisher Â
âHow does Phoebe do it? (a question I ask myself daily). I remember waking up on June 18 as if it was my birthday. Punisher is everything I hoped for and then some more. The last song on the album, âI know The Endâ concludes with a scream which is the perfect cherry on top to this masterpiece. This album is a rollercoaster of Phoebeâs emotions and I feel blessed to be along for the ride. It is relatable, heartfelt and honest. Thank you to Phoebe for this gift. The world will never be the same after this.â - L. S.
Rina Sawayama - SAWAYAMA
âSAWAYAMA is the early 2000s pop resurgence we didnât know we needed, mixed with all the best parts of nu-metal. Rina Sawayama uses catchy pop hooks reminiscent of early Britney Spears, and pairs them with heavy guitar riffs to give us arguably the most fun album of 2020 that we cannot wait to experience live.â - K. C.
Tame Impala â The Slow Rush
Thundercat - It Is What It Is
âI love how this album embraces the darkness while managing to find the light in despair - it seems to acutely reflect the times we are in yet is simultaneously so personal to Bruner. The lyrics are set against a backdrop of funk, electronica, jazz, and soul, so thereâs a little something for everybody.â - S. D.
Waxahatchee - Saint Cloud
âThis album was released early in quarantine, and was the perfect musical escape during some of the toughest days. The imagery and reflection of the lyrics are why Saint Cloud tops my list of albums of 2020.â - J. F.
Honorable Mentions: The Beths â Jump Rope Gazers Fontaines DC - A Heros Dream Kevin Morby â Sundowner Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit â Reunions My Morning Jacket - The Waterfall II CHIKA - Industry Games Megan Thee Stallion - Suga Christian Lee Hutson- Beginners Idles- Ultra Mono Sturgill Simpson - Cuttin Grass Pup - This Place Sucks Ass Futurebirds- Teamwork Adrianne Lenker â Songs / Instrumentals Tom Misch, Yussef Dayes - What Kinda Music + the bonus tracks EP Some Kind Of Peace â Olafur Arnalds Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown - Pressure Josh Ritter - See Here, I Have Built You a Mansion Sahara Moon - Worthy Local H - Lifers Deep Purple - Whoosh! TOP TEN LIVESTREAMS 2020 (in no particular order)
Christine & The Queens (Live on KEXP at Home)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bavZe47um4
âLive on KEXP at Homeâ was home to some of my favorite quarantine livestreams, and this one did anything but disappoint. Not only does Chris, aka Christine & The Queens, perform, but interviews are woven throughout the livestream. The drama of her performances, juxtaposed with her witty and humorous banter with the interviewer was such a breath of fresh air. If youâre a fan of Chris, this is a must watch.â - S. D.
Courtney Barnett and Lucius & Friends: Live From Our Lounge Rooms with Sheryl Crow, 3/25/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbfRbw3o1jU
âThis was a gift that kept on giving. The stream started off with Courtney Barnett and Lucius in matching pajamas. I truly thought it could not get any better but I was in for a treat! The stream included performances by Nathaniel Rateliff, Sheryl Crow, Sharon Van Etten, Waxahatchee, Kevin Morby and more. I can safely say this was my favorite live stream I watched in 2020.â - L. S.
Julien Baker, Themfest Instagram Livestream, 4/16/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tINSbY4wRjs
âRecorded for Themfest during the early days of quarantine, Julien Bakerâs in-home livestream was a welcome respite from the Cuomo briefings and general despair of mid April. Just kidding, Julien Baker is the queen of Sad Shit and I certainly didnât tune into this livestream expecting a mood boost. But if you subscribe to the âsad songs make me feel betterâ aesthetic purveyed by our sweet little siren, this moody, intimate shot-on-iphone set will scratch that itch. But letâs not fool ourselves, nothing will ever replace the feeling of holding your breath along with 1,799 others at Brooklyn Steel while JB rips your heart out, in a nice way.â - E. M.
Kurt Vile, Love From Philly Livestream, 5/3/20 (covers John Prineâs âSam Stoneâ near the end) Â
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjKG-7d5loY&feature=emb_logo - Jared
âBack in May, Kurt Vile took to his basement for a solo acoustic stream to benefit 30 Amp Circuit, a non-profit dedicated to support the health, wellness, and professional needs of Philadelphia-based musicians and artists. The intimate 3-song set rounded out with a special tribute to the late John Prine, as Kurt did his own rendition of âSam Stone.ââ - J. D.
Radiohead, In Rainbows - From The Basement, 6/4/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWqDIZxO-nU
âThis is the one die hard Radiohead fans have been waiting for. This session originally from 2008 existed in some pretty esoteric places and has been almost impossible to find â until now.â - G. A.
Sturgill Simpson, Live at The Ryman Auditorium, 6/5/20 Â
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kO73im4J2sU
â2020 was supposed to be a banner year for Sturgill, until he got COVID-19 in April. Heâs ok now, but something about this performance in the sacred church of country music The Ryman, hits different.â - G. A.
Haim - Women in Music PT. III Live Show, 6/25/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_eJU6X3_jQ
âI love pretty much everything the Haim sisters do - so much so that I aspire to be a sister myself. When I was feeling those very familiar mid-pandemic blues, their âWomen in Music PT IIIâ livestream, which celebrated their new album of the same name, was the exact pick me up that I needed. For the first time since March, the 30 minute set made me feel as if I was at an intimate gathering - rather than behind a computer watching a YouTube video along with thousands of others. The stream will have you grooving, laughing, and you may even want to be a Haim sister yourself.â - S. D.
Nilufer Yanya, Boiler Room: Streaming From Isolation with Night Dreamer & Worldwide FM, 6/28/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAaAicIJE7s
âHauntingly beautiful and yet also somehow grounded, Nilufer Yanyaâs June livestream was a special one to watch. It makes the case for how intimate an artistâs performance can be, even virtually.â - G. A.
Brittany Howard, Live From Ryman Auditorium, 10/17/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLH59WLQbZo
âWatching Brittany Howard and her incredible band rip through a set on the Ryman stage like no one and everyone was watching all at once was cathartic. The combination of such a singular artist and historic venue hit a similar nerve to seeing an artist youâre excited about play a show in the flesh with people you love â not an easy feat!â - M. L.
Tkay Maidza - Live on KEXP at Home, 11/3/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPJgrDvyRbw
â13 minutes and 11 seconds of pure energy. This livestream is the moment weâve all been waiting for, and, in my opinion, showcases Maidza as the star that she is. A must-watch if youâre looking for a refreshing and colorful approach to hip-hop.â - S. D.
Tis the Damn Season
December 26, 2020
Itâs 2:17 am in the morning. Christmas is officially over, but the holidays are not. It has been a tough year for many people. Most people had spent their Christmas mourning for the family members that they had lost from the pandemic, jobless, alone, or not having enough food in their tables. My family and I are fortunate enough to still have our jobs and lives. Suffice to say, we celebrated the Christmas eve the same way we would just like every year, except we had two additional people in the house and we did secret santa. I played the role of âSantaâ distributed the gifts to everyone.Â
Truth be told, even though we didn't do anything significantly different this year, I truly felt, in a warm way, that this yearâs Christmas is special. It made realize the important things in life and that once the worst has come to pass, everything will be different. I don't know if they are good or bad just yet.
I liked all the gifts that I got this year. My gift for myself is the gaming PC that I've always wanted since I was a kid. Hell was the journey of finding the right part and getting the PC to work together. Thanks to Zero PC I am able to make use of it. So far it is great! I completed a modded Dragon Age Inquisition run through. It was so much more fun. Speaking of gaming, I also got a gaming keyboard and mouse from my secret santa, which was my brother.Â
Other people in the house gave socks (Christmas theme!), new sets of pajamas, underwear, christmas cardigan, and sweets. I love them truly. I might wear the cardgian and the socks for new years. Might be good to start the new years off with such optimistic view.
In terms of work, there are days where I just want to quit. I do not enjoy the work anymore and I do not think I am meeting the expectation because of it. I had an emotional breakdown when I made a mistake at work and cried while talking to my manager over the phone. I am mentally and emotionally exhausted. I just feel like I dont care about life and just not exist. I hope my couple of days off will make my mood somewhat better.
My mind is still wrestling to idea of looking for a new job. I like the company, the people that I work with (in some days my manager is an exception), the organizational culture, and the opportunity to learn. However, I came to realize that I prefer to work in place where there is a stability. Ever since I started, we have changed so much of the work policy, practices, and expectations. I dont know if I want that anymore. It is stressful because if I forget one thing, there is often a significant consequences.
On a positive note, Taylor Swift dropped a second album this year called Evermore. It is so good! Not better than Folklore but a good work of art nonetheless. My favorite songs are champagne problems, evermore, and Ivy. The title of this blog is actually one of the songs in the album.
I dont know what will happen next. But, I sure hope that it will be better. I hope that I get to travel this year. Go back to Punta Cana or go to Japan. So many hopes for the future!
Heart - Part 2
Title: Heart - Part 2
Pairing: Reader x Dean
Word Count: 4,714
Theme Song: Sparks Fly by Taylor Swift
A/N: I wrote the first part of Heart a year ago as a birthday gift for myself, and a few people asked for a continuation! I figured it couldnât hurt to expand my daydream a little bit more. This is also unbetaâd, so any mistakes are mine. Enjoy!
_______________
Your job at the bakery was a blessing. Not only had you not had to interview or submit a resume, but you hadnât even applied for the job; a friend had recommended you before moving out of state, and youâd been offered the position, no questions asked. You loved your new boss, and the job paid well, which was exactly what you needed to tide you over until you could find something better. That being said, it was hard work sometimes, and your birthday was no exception.
The girl who normally worked the morning shift had taken the weekend off, and of course, that meant you were working a nine-hour shift instead of your usual three-hour one. Tomorrow you were working nine hours as well. While youâd normally be happy about the opportunity to get some extra practice on your baking skills and the chance to earn more money, youâd been hoping to spend the majority of your birthday with your friends and family, not with hot ovens, dirty dishes, and indecisive customers.
Sighing, you switched off the annoying oven timer and opened the double doors to check on the cupcakes you were baking. They werenât done yet, so you turned the pan around and reset the timer, silently dreading the obnoxious buzzing it would interrupt you within a few minutes.
A summer storm was brewing outside, and through the front windows, you could see the dark clouds hovering low, ready to drop their stores of rain on the farmland that wound its way through your little town. You scowled, a little upset at the sight. It always managed to storm on your birthday, and though you needed the rain, you still wished that it would grow sunny again so you could have a happy, warm birthday for once.
âHi Y/N!â
You turned, smiling politely when you saw your boss, Martha, pushing through the saloon doors into the kitchen. She was holding a card in one hand and an armful of bags with the other, and you quickly rushed around the stainless steel worktables to help her.
âHappy Birthday, Y/N!â she said, holding out the card for you. You took it, then took a few bags from her so she could readjust the ones she still held. Martha gave you a grateful smile and instructed you to just set them down and open the card.
âThank you so much for the card,â you told her as you sat down on one of the wooden stools. She nodded and watched as you opened the envelope and read the brief message inside. Smiling, you dropped it into the pocket of your apron and stood to get back to work.
âThereâs a cake for you to take home to your family in the cooler,â Martha said, gesturing over to the tall refrigerators that lined the far wall.
Nodding, you gave her another smile and picked up the sponge youâd been using to wash dishes before the oven timer had gone off. Martha went into the back office to do work, leaving you alone, and you had just finished washing the last round cake pan when you heard the telltale buzz of the timer. You rinsed out the sponge and set it back in its spot, then walked over to the oven. Much to your surprise, the timer still had five minutes left, and you frowned in confusion. You could steal hear the buzzing; it was growing louder with each passing second, and you blinked when the number on the dial grew fuzzy. After a moment, they returned to normal and the buzzing subsided.
Maybe I need to have some water, you thought as you crossed to the far worktable to grab your water bottle, dismissing the strange sound and blurry vision. Iâm probably just dehydrated.
âY/N, have you finished those kolaczkis?â Martha asked, appearing in the doorway of her office. You nodded and picked up your bottle. Martha frowned at you from where she stood. âAre you okay?â
âIâm fine,â you replied, smiling a little at her. Taking a sip from your bottle, you wiped your free hand off on your apron, then looked down at the flour-covered fabric. Iâm gonna have to take this home and wash it before my shift tomorrow. The buzzing was back, and you reached up with one hand to rub your eye when you realized that your water bottle was blurry, just like the knob on the oven.
âY/N!â
_______________
The buzzing had disappeared in an instant, as had the bakery, and you suddenly found yourself surrounded by darkness and the sound of a low rumble. You could tell you were laying on your side on something soft, but it was too dark to tell exactly where you were. Slowly, you pushed your hands out in front of you, only to be met by something warm, hard, and solid. It was soft, however, and you carefully moved your hand over its surface. The rumbling seemed to be coming from whatever the hard thing was. It almost sounds like someone snoring, you thought. Where the hell am I?
You hadnât even had a chance to explore the surface very far when you found yourself being pinned down on your back. A light appeared to your right, and a short, surprised laugh came from whoever, or whatever, had flipped you over.
âY/N?â
âDean?â you asked, immediately recognizing his voice. âOh myâ Oh my God!â
Deanâs hands moved away from your wrists and you felt him climb off your body. After a moment, another light turned on and the room was completely illuminated. Dean stood off to the left of his bed, still in his pajamas, with a wide, disbelieving smile plastered on his face. You laughed, launching yourself off the mattress into his arms. He hugged you tightly, then pulled away to look at you.
âI canât believe youâre back! God, I missed you! You look exactly the same as you did last year!â he cried. Dean hadnât stopped smiling since heâd discovered you laying in his bed, and you didnât blame him. Youâd missed him terribly, too.
âThank you?â you laughed, unsure if what he had said was a compliment.
Shaking his head, Dean chuckled and pulled you into his arms once more. âThatâs definitely a good thing,â he replied. âDefinitely a good thing.â
âDean? Whatâs going on? Itâs three in the morningâŚâ
The bedroom door opened to reveal Sam standing in the bleary, dark hallway on the other side. He was wearing pajamas too, and his hair was mussed from sleep, and you realized that the boys were probably getting some much-needed rest when youâd suddenly appeared in Deanâs room. Sam, however, seemed to quickly forget the rude awakening when his eyes landed on you. His whole face brightened as he gave you a wide, albeit sleepy, smile.
âY/N! When did you get here? How did you get here?â he asked. Sam stepped into the room and gave you a quick hug.
Your cheeks hurt from smiling so much, but you couldnât force yourself to stop. âI donât know! I was just at work and then I opened my eyes and I was here!â you said. âI didnât even realize it was so early in the morning for you guys, Iâm so sorry!â
âThereâs nothing to be sorry for, sweetheart. Weâre glad youâre back. I was beginning to wonder if youâd ever come back,â Dean admitted. Sam nodded in agreement.
âMe too,â you replied softly.
The three of you stood in silence for a minute before Sam cleared his throat. âWell, Iâm gonna head back to bed. Iâll see you in the morning, okay, Y/N? I mean, later in the morning?â
You chuckled and nodded, watching him leave. The original excitement of being back in his world was beginning to wear off, and suddenly the room felt a lot smaller than before now that it was just you and Dean.
The two of you had left things off on a very intimate note, but now that it had been a year, things felt differentâawkward. You felt like a stranger, almost, and you could tell that Dean was feeling it too. The separation hadnât done anyone any good. Silently, you wondered if you would get to spend longer than a day here this time, or if youâd have to deal with one day of being together, followed by a year apart, for the rest of your life. Will I even get to come back again after this? Or is this just a two-time thing?
âY/N?â
You lifted your gaze from the floor to meet Deanâs eyes.
âDo you wanna lay back down?â he asked, sounding somewhat nervous. Relieved that he was making the first move, you nodded.
Dean relaxed and turned off the lamp on his desk before taking your hand in his and leading you back over to the side of the bed. It was then that you realized you were still wearing your work uniformâcomplete with your royal blue apron, non-slip shoes, and the pristine white bandana that held back your hair. Dean raised an eyebrow at you when he saw you glance down at your attire, and you gave him a nervous laugh.
âI work at a bakery now,â you mumbled, self-consciously adjusting the bandana that held back your hair.
Dean grinned and nodded in response, then turned you around. His fingers moved deftly to untie the bow that held your apron around your waist, and once heâd stripped that from your body, you toed off the shoes and tossed your bandana onto the small pile of your clothing that now rested on the floor beside Deanâs bed.
Following his lead, you allowed Dean to pull you onto the bed beside him, then let him lay you down so your back was pressed against his hard chest. His arm snaked over your waist so he could hold you closer, and you found yourself smiling. Reaching over, you pressed the switch to turn off the lamp, submerging the room in darkness once more.
It only took him a few moments to find your hand and intertwine his fingers with yours. You smiled to yourself and closed your eyes.
_______________
âY/N⌠Wake up, beautifulâŚâ
Smiling softly, you allowed your eyes to flutter open, and you were greeted by the sight of Deanâs bright green eyes staring back at you.
âHey,â you murmured. âIâm still here.â
âIsnât it great?â Dean asked, a wide smile stretching across his face.
You nodded in response and snuggled closer, pressing your face against his chest as his arms wrapped around you. Things between the two of you felt normal again, and relief flooded you as you snuggled up against him. You felt his legs tangling with yours, then his chin pressing against the top of your head. Secretly, youâd always imagined that cuddling with Dean would be like thisâwarm, safe, and sleepy-softâand youâd never felt happier than you did in that moment.
âDean?â you whispered. He hummed in response, one of his hands running up and down your back in long, soothing motions. âAre you hungry?â He hummed again, clearly content to simply lay in bed with you. âIâll make you some homemade biscuits if you get upâŚâ
Dean was crawling out of the bed in a heartbeat, and you couldnât hold back your laugh as you followed him and got to your feet. The smile on his face was contagious, and you found yourself smiling as well.
After tossing you a red and blue flannelâfrom 10x12, you rememberedâthat you could wear over your thin shirt, Dean went and grabbed his own clothes from the chair against the wall. You pretended not to notice when he sniffed the clothes to see if they smelled from prior use, and you definitely pretended not to notice when he began to strip off his pajamas to change into the new clothes. However, you couldnât help but sneak a quick glance of his broad shoulders, and youâd be lying if you said your mouth hadnât gone dry at the sight of his tan, freckle-littered skin. He turned around just as you were wetting your lips to get rid of the dry feeling, and you felt your cheeks flush pink when he gave you a cocky smile.
âSee something you like, sweetheart?â he asked.
You laughed self-consciously and fidgeted with the long sleeves of his flannel. âYou already know I like you, Dean,â you replied, offering him a little smile. âSo I guess you already know the answer to that question, too.â
Dean grinned and laughed at that. Grabbing your hand, he led you down the hall to the kitchen. You didnât need him to lead you, of course, youâd memorized the layout of the bunker the last time youâd appeared in their universe, and during the first moment of free time youâd had after going back to your own, youâd drawn out a map of the place so you could have it as a little memento.
Sam was sitting at the table when you and Dean walked into the kitchen. He looked up when he heard you come in, giving the two of you a warm smile.
âHey, Y/N! Sorry I wasnât really awake when you showed up earlier this morningâŚâ
âItâs okay,â you laughed. âI understand why you werenât. How are you?â
Shrugging, Sam watched as you opened the fridge and began to pull out the ingredients you needed to make the biscuits youâd promised Dean. Once you had everything you would need from the fridge and the various cabinets, you tied your hair back so it would be out of the way and began to make the first thing on your listâbiscuits.
Moving around the bunker kitchen felt natural to you, and soon you were cooking up a storm. The oven was occupied by both the homemade biscuits and blueberry scones, while you had grits and your famous no-bake peanut butter oatmeal cookies cooking on the stove. Neither brother made to interrupt you, but you realized during a lull in the baking process that both of them were watching you from the kitchen table as they sipped their morning coffee.
âWhat?â you asked, tucking a stray piece of hair back behind your ear.
Sam and Dean exchanged a glance before Dean spoke up. âNothing,â he said. He took a sip from his mug and set it back down, then continued. âYou just look so at home here. Itâs like youâve lived here longer than we have.â
You felt another blush growing in your cheeks. âWell, I mean, I guess I just⌠Watch the show a lot? And itâs only logical where you keep things, so everything that I needed was pretty easy to find, and I work in a bakery so that might be part of it because Iâm pretty good at baking and itâs natural for me now soâŚâ You trailed off, suddenly fully aware that you were rambling.
âItâs okay, Y/N. Weâre not mad at you or anything. Itâs just interesting,â Sam told you. He gave you a gentle smile before downing the rest of his coffee and letting out a satisfied sigh. Standing, he went over to the sink and set the mug down, then squeezed your shoulder.
âIt really is good to have you back. I hope you get to stay longer this time. Iâd love to hear about whatâs different in your world compared to ours, as well as if you have any opinions aboutââ
âDude! Sheâs not going to sit and discuss nerdy stuff with you all day!â Dean interrupted. He picked up his own mug and placed it in the sink as well, sliding an arm around your waist when he was done. The action seemed natural to him, and you bit down on your lower lip to hide your giddy smile.
âWhatever, dude.â Sam rolled his eyes, then gave you another smile. âBut I really would like to talk with you at some point, that is if Dean ever gives you a moment to yourself.â
You laughed a little and nodded, smiling. âIâd love to chat, Sam. Iâll come find you later on, okay?â
Sam nodded and grabbed a handful of your leftover blueberries from the bowl on the counter, then left you and Dean alone in the kitchen.
Once heâd completely disappeared from view, Dean pulled you so you were no longer tucked into his side, but rather pressed up against his front. You smiled up at him in surprise, pleasantly surprised by how close he was keeping you despite your year-long absence.
âI missed you,â he murmured, leaning down slightly to rest his forehead against yours. Smiling, you reached up to wrap your arms around Deanâs neck, giggling a little when he suddenly pressed his lips against yours.
âWhat was that for?â you asked once heâd pulled away.
âI just wanted to see if you got any sweeter, considering youâre working at a bakery and all,â Dean replied.
Laughing, you let your head tilt back as Dean pulled you even tighter against his body. âDean!â you cried. âYouâre gonna have to let me go so I can stir the cookies and the gravy!â
âNah, theyâll be fine. They can go a few minutes without you. Iâve gone a whole year without you.â
Dean kissed you again, this time a bit more urgently. You kissed back, but when he finally separated from you long enough for you to catch your breath, something in the back of your mind flashed in warning. Heâs only met me once. Why is he so affectionate toward me? Slowly, you put your hands on Deanâs chest and pushed him back, stepping out of his arms and letting out a long, slow breath.
A confused look flashed across his face, and for a brief moment, you couldâve sworn there was a spark of hurt in his green eyes. Guilt formed a lump in your throat, but you swallowed it and stared Dean down.
âDean,â you began, âwhy are you being so⌠Romantic? Youâve only met me once before. Why are you acting like this?â
Dean stayed quiet for a moment, thinking it over. Finally, he replied, âI donât know. Thereâs just something about you that just seems so⌠Right.â You didnât respond, unsure of what to say to that. No one had ever said something that even remotely resembled Deanâs words, and it gave you both the warm-fuzzies and an unsettling nervousness.
âDeanâŚâ
âI talked to Cas, Y/N. After you left. He said that your necklace links you to us and that itâs no coincidence. You wouldn't have ended up here in our universe if this isnât⌠Isnât someplace you belong. You belong here. With me, and with Sam and with everyone else you know from the show in your world. Thatâs why everything here feels so natural to you.â
âNo, Dean. No!â The words coming from your mouth shocked you. Less than a few days ago, you wouldâve given anything to come back to the Winchestersâ world, but to now hear that the life youâd worked so hard to build for yourself wasnât your life at all⌠It made you want to cry, despite the fact that you knew deep down that he was telling the truth. Everything did feel natural.
âNo?â he whispered. Dean sounded heartbroken, and you didnât blame him. Heâd gone through so much and been rejected so many times by so many people, but it would be reckless to stay in a world like his. You couldnât live in a fantasy world when there were people back home counting on you, like your parents. They need me, you thought, your heart heavy. I canât stay in a place where I could get killed. Who knows what would happen back in my world if I died here?
âNo, Dean,â you repeated, your voice quiet. You didnât dare speak any louder for fear that he hear just how damaging the words truly were to you.
âY/NâŚâ
Dean reached out to grab your arm, but you pulled away and took another step back. Quickly, you turned off the pots on the stove and pulled the half-baked biscuits and scones from the oven with one of the oven mitts youâd left strewn across the counter. The cookie sheets clattered loudly on the counter as you set them down, rushing to get out.
âIâm gonnaâ Iâm gonna go for a walk, okay? Iâll be back later.â Your voice shook as you spoke, but all you could think about was getting out of the kitchen and out of the bunker. Being around Dean made it so you couldnât think clearly; your head was screaming no, but your heart was shouting at you that he was telling the truth. Things felt right when you were with Dean, and there was no denying it.
You didnât give Dean a chance to speak before you hurried out of the kitchen and down the hall. Sam tried to speak when you passed him in the library, but you just walked faster and took the stairs in twos. By the time you were outside, tears were blurring your vision and a harsh sob was building in your throat.
After taking a few deep breaths to try and collect yourself, you stepped out onto the shoulder of the road and began to walk. You werenât sure which way Lebanon was, but you had a good feeling that eventually youâd run into a town, no matter which way you took.
_______________
Sometime after youâd started walking, it began to rain. Your watch told you it had been three hours, and you were exhausted, but you couldnât stop. Instead, you just trudged on in the dirt that was quickly turning into mud as the rain poured down from the heavy skies above you.
The three hours of walking had given you plenty of time to think. In that time, youâd come to the decision that youâd been right all along; staying here with Dean was dangerous. Youâd read plenty of tumblr posts about how he was a deadly and dangerous man, despite the many soft, redeeming qualities that you normally associated with him, and a part of you deep down knew that someday, somehow, the unpredictable nature of Dean Winchester would flare up and youâd be left in the dust. You couldnât live with something like that, you decided, and so you kept walking.
âY/N!â
The shout of your name from behind was distinct, even over the sound of pouring rain, and you began to quicken your steps when the voice registered as Deanâs. In a moment, the rumble of the Impala came into earshot as well, and you listened as he pulled to the side of the road somewhere behind you.
âY/N! Stop!â
Dean slammed the Impala door and you heard his heavy footsteps squelching in the mud. You walked on, ignoring him. His hand on your arm, however, forced you to stop, and he turned you around, not releasing you.
âLet me go, Dean,â you ordered, not caring if your voice had any fight left in it. Fighting against Dean was useless. Not only would he win in a physical fight, but you knew that he would try to use logic against you as well. The storm, your lack of direction in his world, and your overall lack of resources and protection were all weakness he could point out, and you knew heâd noticed all of them.
âNo, Y/N! Iâm not letting you go! You are the only good thing thatâs happened to me in the past two years, and Iâ When Cas said that you belonged here, and after you said all those things that you thought about me, my first thought was that Iâd finally be able to start a life with someone who wasnât afraid of me! Youâre not afraid of my past, youâre not afraid of how damaged I am! I donât have to explain myself to you because you know everything there is to know about me!â Dean shouted.
His voice was almost drowned out by the storm, but you still managed to hear the yearning in his words. Dean wanted you. By now, you were holding onto his arms, wanting more than anything to kiss him, but something was still stopping you.
âIâ I donât know everything about you, Dean! I donât know everything, and I want to know, but I have family, and I have a job, and Iâ I donât know! This is all so fast for me!â you cried. âHow do I know Iâm not going to be like all those girls that youâve hooked up with in the past? I canât take that, Dean! Iâm not just someone that you can have a one-night stand with and then drop me off at the nearest bus station! I have no place to go back to if you want me to go! I donât even know how long Iâll be able to stay here, or if Iâll be able to stay at all!â
At a loss for words, Dean simply pulled you closer and kissed you hard. After a moment, you melted against him, letting his lips move against yours. His tongue swiped against your bottom lip and you moaned.
A loud crack of thunder made you jump, and you suddenly found yourself clinging to Dean, rather than kissing him. He laughed, soft and low, before prying you off of him.
âYouâre okay, Y/N. Iâve got you. Letâs get in the car, okay? We donât have to go anywhere you donât want just yet, plus I think itâs going to be hard to drive with the rain coming down so hard,â he said, shielding his eyes so he could peer up at the skies.
Nodding, you grabbed Deanâs hand and started walking toward the car. He opened the backseat for you, letting you climb in before climbing in himself and shutting the door. You couldnât help the smile that came across your face as you soaked in the warm, leather smell of the carâs interior, then ran your hand across the top of the bench seats. Turning around, you grinned wider when you saw the two sets of initials scratched into the car, and one by one you checked off the items in the car that came from Sam and Deanâs rough childhood.
Dean watched you intently, and you could tell when you caught his eyes that he knew what was going through your head.
âOh come on,â you teased. âIf you knew everything about my life, youâd do the same thing.â
âI thought you said you didnât know everything,â Dean replied, raising an eyebrow at you.
You blushed. âWell, almost everything.â
A hush fell over the two of you, and you looked down, playing with a loose button on the flannel you were still wearing. After a few minutes, Dean reached over and took your hand in his.
âY/N, I donât know how long youâre going to be able to stay, but I can promise that Iâm not going to just dump you somewhere after a little while,â he said. His green eyes were soft and earnest, and you found yourself being drawn in by both his words and the loving expression on his face. âI love you, Y/N. I know that sounds crazy because Iâve only met you once before, but I know that Iâm meant to be with you.â
The buzzing sound from the bakery filled your head again, and panic welled up in your throat.
âDean? Dean, I think Iâm going back.â You tightened your grip on his hands. âDean, Iâm sorry, I donât want to go back, I love you too! I love him!â You shouted up at the carâs ceiling, hoping someone with some power could keep you here. The Impala was growing blurry around you, as if it were a watercolor picture being melded into its surroundings by the pouring rain. Arenât those the magic words? Isnât that whatâs supposed to keep me here in stories like these?
âPlease! I love him!â you pleaded. âI love him!â
Pairing: Crowley x Reader  Guardian angel!Gabriel x Reader
Character: Crowley, Sam, Dean, Reader and Gabriel
Word Count: 3,870 (Whoops)
A/N: Reference to 5.08, Switching Channels, one of my fav episodes. Slight crackfic (humorous, over the top but not ridiculous). This story is yet again hard to classify as either angst or fluff. I suppose gun to my head I choose fluff? This was written for the following challenges
Also on A03
This was written for:
       [Taylor Swift]
All I knew this morning when I woke
Is I know something now, know something now I didnât before.
And all Iâve seen since eighteen hours ago
Is green eyes and freckles and your smile
In the back of my mind making me feel like
âWhat am I doing here exactly?â
âWe summoned you.â
âAnother great discovery by Captain Obvious. Iâm standing in a bloody devilâs trap after feeling the ground shake in hell. I know I was summoned. The question is why, Moose?â
Dean cleared his throat and waved briefly at Crowley signaling to him that he too was also sitting on the couch. Crowley gave him a death stare.
âDonât look at me. This was Samâs idea.â
Crowley rolled his eyes.
âMoose working alone?â
âNot quite alone.â
The second that Gabriel came out of the shadows there was an uncomfortable silence that fell over the entire room. Everyone was frozen in place, deathly silent. The sound of rustling drew everyoneâs attention. Crowley and Dean looked up at the same time to see a banner above the couch. Dean and Crowley shared an equally unamused look.
âI think you may need an intervention, both of you.â
 âAn intervention. Are you two morons bloody serious? An intervention for me and Dean? Jealous that heâs still my bestie? Sorry, Moose. Itâs not my fault, Squirrel canât get enough of me. Squirrelâs are known to like n-.â
âIâm not your bestie.â
âThank god you cut him off. Let me jump in here, Sam. You two crazy kids are here because of Y/N. Sam and I are getting sick and tired of you both moping around after the poor girl. Itâs actually quite ridiculous. So I have a plan.â
You walked into the room in your Winnie the Pooh pajamas, fuzzy socks, a tooth brush in your mouth, hair askew and your eyes wide as everyone turned to you. If you had known there would be guests, you wouldnât have just barreled out of your room. You mumbled, âWhat the hell.â But with the toothbrush in your mouth it sounded more like, ârart ta haall.â
You noticed the devilâs trap under the couch and then the intervention sign. You ran to the bathroom to spit out your toothpaste. The scene in the living room froze, everyone unsure of what to do or say. Â You werenât meant to just burst into the meeting. You looked at yourself in the mirror, fixing your hair at least so it didnât look like you grew a mushroom on the top of your head. You would have run out of the bathroom to change but you had no idea what was happening and thought it best to return ASAP so you didnât miss the mother of all explanations. Your top was hella tight and made your breasts look huge â not like you were complaining really. The two men that intrigued you the most were out there.
           [Taylor Swift]
I just wanna know you better, know you better, know you better now
I just wanna know you better, know you better, know you better now
           [Both]
I just wanna know you better, know you better, know you better now
I just wanna know you, know you, know you
The second you saw Crowley your heart sped up. You bit your lip. He looked just as handsome as always. You ran over to the devilsâ trap. You didnât like the idea of him being trapped here. You wanted him here with you but not trapped. You bent down in front of him giving him a good show of your cleavage. Crowley groaned as he looked down at you, his pants getting tighter by the second. You wiped the paint off ignoring whatever it was that Gabriel was telling you. Your face was in Crowleyâs crotch at this point. You noticed his hard on and blushed profusely. Crowley bent down and ran his thumb on your cheek.
âAll for you, pet.â
Your eyes traveled slowly down from his intense gaze to his crotch and up to his lips. You blushed even more as everyoneâs attention on you continued. Crowley could hear how fast your heart was beating. He wanted nothing more than to kiss you right there and then.
Dean groaned at the scene before him. Â Your eyes jumped over to Deanâs. Truthfully, you hadnât even noticed him there. You liked Dean, too, but were undeniably drawn to Crowley like a moth to a flame. There was amazing chemistry between you two but Crowley wasnât the sensible choice. Dean treated you with the utmost respect and would make a fine boyfriend. You were a hunter as well and much preferred to hunt with the boys so it would be a perfect, sensible fit. But when is love and attraction sensible? You and Dean both understood the risks and limitations of your job. You couldnât have a family it was way too dangerous but he could love you, grow old with you. You could have as close to a fairy tale ending as possible. But then why did your heart want Crowley? He made you nervous and excited. You felt alive when you were with him even if it was just to talk over cases. The second he came into the room, your eyes would light up and there was never anyone else that could ever get your attention. You couldnât reconcile the two men in your mind. How does one choose? Your head or your heart? Itâs not like you knew a lot about either of them? They werenât the most forthcoming with their feelings or opinions. For all you knew maybe they just liked you. You smiled nervously at Dean wondering what the intervention was when the ground shifted.
You fell backwards from a crouching position to find your head meeting a pillow. You looked behind you to see a gorgeous King sized bed. Sam appeared on the far side of the room. You quickly got up and walked over to Gabriel about to demand an explanation when he held up his hand to you and Sam.
Gabriel could feel your apprehension. He placed a calming hand on your shoulder and turned you around slowly so you could take in the room. You appeared to be in a sound booth. There were controls near you and a person with headphones on manning them. Glass surrounded the booth. A candy-covered carpet was at your feet. Sam looked at you nervously. You moved forward and looked down to see a set of some sort. The big screen in your room was off for now and the only thing on was someoneâs ipod and it was playing, Everything has Changed by Taylor Swift ft Ed Sheeran.
                [Taylor Swift]
Cause all I know is we said, âHello.â
And your eyes look like coming home
All I know is a simple name
Everything has changed
All I know is you held the door
Youâll be mine and Iâll be yours
All I know since yesterday is everything has changed
          [Ed Sheeran]
And all my walls stood tall painted blue
And Iâll take them down, take them down and open up the door for you
          [Taylor Swift]
And all I feel in my stomach is butterflies
The beautiful kind, making up for lost time,
Taking flight, making me feel right
 âI know who has your heart. Iâm you guardian angel for Peteâs sake. I have to know. But none of you are acting on it. They havenât told you how they feel and you havenât made a decision. Consider this a platform to start a dialogue. Listen carefully and make a decision. Heart or head. I refuse to see my charge alone and upset over her love life. Please allow me to make you happy. If you say no then Iâll just make everyone appear back at the bunker. If we proceed itâs on your say so. We can pull the plug at any time.â
âThis is insane, Gabriel.â
âWhat exactly is this?â You inquire diplomatically
âWeâre in TV land and this my dear is a game show. Instead
of a man choosing for the lady, I will give them a venue in which they can reveal themselves to you and you choose the man. I will stay by you whatever you choose. I promise you.â
âAm I meant for one of them?â
âYou choose your destiny not my father.â
âThat doesnât answer my question. Am I meant for one of them?â
âYes, but humans were given free will. Choose for yourself; donât let destiny choose for you.â
âWill you harm them because I heard from Dean what you did the boys last time and-.â
âWhat? The nutcracker? Heâs still sore about that?â
Sam gave Gabriel a death stare.
âThat was last time and in all fairness I was trying to teach them a lesson and in turn they taught me one. No agendas, no destiny, no harm just questions. I promise.â
Sam gives him an incredulous look.
âThereâs a TV in here so you can watch them both. If you ever want to stop the show, all you two have to do is press this red button and I will suddenly appear. Any concerns, you let me know.â
You sighed heavily before nodding.
âProceed, Gabriel.â
âAs you wish, milady.â
Gabriel winked and disappeared in the blink of an eye. The TV monitor in your room came on. You heard a theme song and then heard applause as Gabriel came out wearing a gold suit. Gabriel waved to the studio audience.
          [Both]
I just wanna know you better, know you better, know you better now
I just wanna know you better, know you better, know you better now
I just wanna know you better, know you better, know you better now
I just wanna know you, know you, know you
         [Both]
âCause all I know is we said, âHello.â
And your eyes look like coming home
All I know is a simple name
Everything has changed
All I know is you held the door
And youâll be mine and Iâll be yours
All I know since yesterday is everything has changed
âThis is ridiculous.â
âThis is Dean and Crowley, Sam. They arenât exactly very forthcoming with their feelings. And I am lonely. Iâve been conflicted for a year now. I havenât met anyone on a hunt. I always leave early from the bar because I donât want to sleep with random people. I want a relationship. I want a future. I need to know. I deserve to be happy and so do they.â
âAnd Dean can move on.â
You give Sam a confused look.
âI see the way you look at Crowley but you have to be sure. If you need a game show to do so who am I to stop you?â
âHello, party people! Welcome to the Game of Love. Iâm your host â Gabriel. Yes, like the angel ladies.â
The applause go crazy.
âYou are too much. Stop the applause. I know Iâm awesome. But this isnât about me. This is about Y/N and our wonderful contestants. So lets pull up our preverbal sleeves and dig right in. On our left we have Dean Winchester a hunter.â
The crowd boos.
âAnd on our right we have the King of Hell. How awesome is that, an actual King.â
The crowd cheers. Dean tries to move but canât and Crowley notices yet another devilâs trap but this time on the ceiling. He rolls his eyes at Gabriel and actually growls at him.
âNow, ladies and gentleman, letâs begin. Dean, what is your favorite movie genre?â
Dean stared at Gabriel confused.
âAction, I guess â if I had to choose.â
âSame question to you.â
âYou kidnapped us to ask me about movies. The second I can get out of here I will have your head. I am a King and you know I have a lot of appoint-.â
âAre you forfeiting your answer?â
Rolling his eyes, Crowley grumbles âHorror.â
âIs Y/N an insomniac?â
âYes.â
âWell thatâs not fair is it? Y/N lives with the Winchesters. How, pray tell, would I know that. If the Winchester says yes, so will I.â
âNoted. Okay so Y/N is having a bad day. What do you do?â
âTake Y/N out and try to get her mind off whatever it is thatâs bothering her. Weâd have a fun time. I would try to make her laugh as much as possible even if I had to act like a clown the whole night. It would be low key and all about her.â
âOh, Squirrel. Iâd pop in and hold her while I ask whatâs wrong. I would listen intently to everything she says. Iâd let her talk for as long as she needs to. I wouldnât take her out. I would spend the night reminding her that she has a King who cares for her deeply. Sex and booze wonât fix the problem. It will still be there in the morning and now youâre adding a hangover to the current problems.â
âSometimes things are too big to talk about or think about. Sometimes it hurts too much and you need a distraction and where did I say anything about sex?â
âPerhaps it is too big to talk about but let the lady choose the course of action, hmm?â
âCalm down, boys. Next question. What three words would you use to describe Y/N?â
âGorgeous, strong and loyal.â
âUnlike my predecessor. I canât relate three words but I understand this is a game show that weâre stuck in so very well. Sensitive at times, tough most of the time, and sassy just like me.â
Dean rolls his eyes.
âWhat are her favorite magazines and food?â
âShe lives with the Winchesters. Hello â unfair advantage bird brain.â
Gabriel scowls at the King.
âCareful, this is my show. Show respect where respect is due.â
Crowley rolls his eyes.
âWhat is her ideal date?â
Dean smiles, âIâd take her to a nice restaurant. Somewhere where the food is great but quiet enough to talk. Then weâd move to the bar.â
Crowley scoffs. âYou would take her there. I am a King and can offer her anything in the world. I would take her not to a nice restaurant in some stupid Podunk town, no. Iâd take her to the best restaurant period. She loves Italian food and I know the perfect place. The owner knows me well so I can get the best table away from prying eyes or I can simply buy out the restaurant for the night. Or we could eat in a nice street cafĂŠ in Paris. Anything that would put a smile on her face. Nothing loud, no obnoxious music. Â And my attention would be on her, work be damned. Afterwards we would go for dessert again anywhere she wants.â
âSo you would let her lead?â
âIn terms of where to go, I would indeed, Squirrel. In terms of other things I know what to do to make her happy and she should trust me to do that.â
âThat leads us perfectly into the next question. Sex on the first date?â
âSure why not? If weâre having a good night, whatâs better than sex to end it off? If weâre feeling it, letâs do it. I would never think anything less of Y/N if she said yes.â
âI disagree with my occasional comrade here.â
âWe went from besties to occasional comrades.â
âMy apologies for delivering the truth. Y/N is a one-in-a-million girl and I would take great pleasure in getting to know her. Sex is great but Iâm hundreds of years old so sex in and of itself gets a bit old after a while. Having sex with someone you know, love, and respect â now thatâs when itâs amazing.â
âWhat kind of future could you offer her?â
âWell weâre both hunters. I donât really know if kids are in the cards. But if she wanted them I would try and make it work. Itâs a bit early to tell and being a hunter is a dangerous job. All I can offer her is my heart.â
âI can offer her the Kingdom of Hell. She can rule by my side as a Queen. I would prefer that she stop hunting but I know Y/N very well and thatâs part of who she is so Iâll just have to be okay with worrying about her constantly. I will always be there for her, whether itâs to hear about her day, to get revenge on whoever made her cry, relieve her stress, make love to her or remind her how much I love her. I could offer her a family if she wanted and would always have her back in any hunt. My Queen would never be hunting alone and I would never allow her to be in any real danger. She would hunt with my trusted demons. Contrary to popular belief, Dean demons can love just as strongly as humans. And I have the resources and ability to pamper her every second of the day.â
âWow. Thatâs not fair. What? I canât pamper her?â
âWith what? Your pool hustle money? Nice clothes nice dinner, makeup. Nail polish, sexy bras, vacations, presents etc? You can do that?â
âThose are material things. What about cooking dinner for her? Being the one who senses sheâs depressed or canât sleep and do whatever it takes to make her feel better. How about doting on her when sheâs sick. Or singing a stupid song to make her happy at karoke?â
âNow wait a minute here. Are you seriously suggesting all I can offer are material things? You think I canât dote on her when sheâs sick or sing at a karoke bar? I can give her the world as well as all the same gesture humans need, You canât give her the world, she has to settle for you.â
âSettle for me? Youâre a demon. Iâm a human. Sheâd be settling if she picked you.â
âDo I need to get a ring in here? This isnât verbal wrestling. You both answer the questions period. Stop being knuckleheads and just answer the questions? Got it? Good. Now what is she afraid of?â
Crowley and Dean spoke at the same time, â Y/N is afraid of losing the people she loves â either from death or from them walking away. â
âShe can only choose one of you. How will each of you react if she doesnât choose you?â
âItâs not that she wouldnât be choosing me. Itâs that she would be choosing the King of Hell over me. Heâs evil and I question whether anything that heâs said today is actually true. Y/N, you canât possibly be attracted to him.â
âI can hear your heartbeat Y/N when I wake into a room, see your eyes light up when I smile back at you. I would understand if you wanted a normal life with Dean but never question how deeply I care about you. Regardless of who you choose I will care for you and look out for you.â
âYou canât want him? Please Y/N please choose me. We hunt demons. How can you be his Queen and a hunter at the same time? I love you Y/N. I have loved you for a long time.â
âAnd thatâs all the time we have for today folks. Some serious confessions here. We will return from a commercial break to reveal the winner.
                        [Bridge]
Come back and tell me why
 Iâm feeling like Iâve missed you all this time, oh, oh, oh.
 And meet me there tonight
 And let me know that itâs not all in my mind.
                         [Taylor Swift]
I just wanna know you better, know you better, know you better now
I just wanna know you, know you, know you
The commercials consisted of a very reluctant Dean and Crowley reading from the teleprompter for venereal disease, two movie trailers, a promo of Hell featuring the King, a MacDonaldâs commercial, and two clips from a talk show with David Letterman featuring both Crowley and Dean.
Gabriel appeared in the booth while the commercials played. You had your answer. You were worried how Dean would react but everyone knew you would pick Crowley. You loved him. You knew that choosing him would make you life hard but you wanted a future with him. You didnât care about being a queen or being pampered. You loved the man that loved you and was fighting for you clearly in every answer he gave. Dean was a great guy and his answers were great but not what you needed at this moment. You hoped that you didnât lose Dean but you couldnât lie to yourself anymore. Crowley held you heart. Sam nodded to you knowing that youâd choose Crowley.
You felt the room shift and you stood in front of Crowley in a nice hotel room. You looked around and laughed.
âThere goes Gabriel and his presumptions. I argued with the game because you two are tight-lipped when it comes to feelings but I choose you.â
âYou really needed a game show to decide?â
âWould I have gotten those answers out of you if I just asked you the questions? Would you have answered the same if you didnât feel like you were competing with Dean?â
âI love you.â
âAnd I love you. Itâs always been you. Instead of what usually happens in hotel room how about you and I just stay up and talk really talk. How does that sound?â
âIâd love nothing more.â
        [Both]
All I know is we said, âHello.â
And your eyes look like coming home
All I know is a simple name
Everything has changed
All I know is you held the door
Youâll be mine and Iâll be yours
All I know since yesterday is everything has changed
         [Taylor Swift]
All I know is we said, âHello.â
So dust off your highest hopes
All I know is pouring rain and everything has changed
All I know is a new found grace
All my days Iâll know your face
All I know since yesterday is everything has changed
Unknown to the two of you there was a small red envelope from Gabriel in the night stand. It read:Â
             Dear Y/N
âI wanted you to be the one to choose but just so you know Crowley is your soulmate.â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â - Your guardian angel, Gabriel
