Beautiful - Track 1

The harmonies for ‘Beautiful’ are short and snappy, and can be seen within the composer's dictation within the score. For example, on page 10 of 'Beautiful part 2', the composer has given the directions as "Slower, Grandly", "A little faster build in energy", "faster and bigger", and also "Massive stadium anthem". The composer would have done this for a reason (O'Keefe, 2015). My character's reason to sing like this is that being a classmate to the Heathers, we understand that there is no way for anyone to join their clique. However, within a blink of an eye there is ‘a babe’ joining their inner circle, who nobody actually knows. With her singing the lyrics and sticking to the composer's dictation, the energy of the lyrics will change from 'Who is this person' to 'omg she's so pretty and a part of the Heathers'. For the sopranos, the vocal quality used is twang, and for me personally is sung in a head. It was beneficial for me to enter the risk zone and take leadership within the sopranos, as this meant if I were signing the wrong key or wrong note, it would be noticed. With it being analysed early on, I can adapt the note in a situation where I've been singing it wrong to prevent issues coming up later down the line.

Another thing that I found beneficial was getting 15 minutes to practice in vocal groups on our own. This was good for me as hearing sopranos for 15 minutes helped me to learn the harmonies as a solo so that I did not remember the song in a different key. This will be because of the harmony sinking into my muscle memory. In singing, your voice remembers how it felt to sing a particular note or exercise. This means that you can recall the same feeling the next time you sing the note. This is how you develop muscle memory (Phillips, 2020). To be able to refrain from forgetting the harmonies, I decide to record voice notes of all harmonies giving, this makes it easier for myself when practising within my free time.

After finishing the harmonies for ‘Beautiful’, we came to realise that we had completed 6 minutes and 30 seconds in just 4 hours, leaving only 1 minute and 30 seconds of the track remaining. While reflecting on the lesson, it was agreed that the foundation was now set, and that the only way from there was upwards. When doing independent reflection, it is clear that attention to the class is crucial. If we continue to work within a team, we will stay ahead of schedule, leaving more time for the director’s finishing touches. With the harmonies ready to add movement, I made it my priority that in my spare time and dedicated free time, I would keep recapping the harmonies so that we can add the choreography and finish the opening number.

For the opening of ‘Beautiful’, the whole ensemble is frozen in different positions. In my group, there is myself, Tayla and Megan. Within our opening movements, you can see me and Tayla pushing Megan over and being mean to her. Despite this, I still portray my true character. For example, I will show enjoyment for being mean when I look at Tayla, but empathy when I look at Megan. When the ensemble comes to life, I walk away down the corridor following Tayla, looking back at Megan to apologise. This shows my character straight away - that I will do anything to fit in with the other kids. On page 8 of the score, it was clear that the director wanted the "Who can survive this", "Who Can escape this" and "I think I'm dying" lyrics to be sharp. The sharpness of the vocals fluxuates levels of fear and anger depending on your character choice. When attacking the choreography I found that my vocal style changed, adding further sharpness to the diction, as well as emphasis on the correct words. Doing this highlights the moment that we meet the Heathers for the first time. This is because our vocal style changes to become a more soft and chorus sound, adding to the Heathers whilst they are gliding through the arch which was created by the ensemble.

During the rehearsal, the cast was stuck on where Ram and Kurt were going to get a shoe from. This was required since Ram will be seen to throw it at Kurt later in the number. I suggested that a nerd could have it in their backpack, and that closer to the time that the shoe is needed, Kurt and Ram can empty their bag to take the shoe. However, it was decided that with the movement being so controlled, it would be easier to hold the shoe underneath his arm.

Towards the end of the routine, I found that continuing to work with those that aren’t close friends, helps you to finish the number faster. Alongside this, I enjoyed working with others a lot more. In a blog written in 2017 by Shada Wehbe, it was stated that “In effect, teamwork is important and essential to accomplish the overall objectives and goals of an organisation.” It continued with “A teamwork environment promotes an atmosphere that fosters friendship and loyalty. These close-knit relationships motivate employees in parallel and align them to work harder, cooperate and be supportive of one another'' (Wehbe, 2017). Seeing the confidence rise in others and everybody pushing themselves meant that it was more enjoyable to create the routine for ‘Beautiful’. It also highlights the truth in the above statement.

Household - Elaines EP

From 2013, a quick EP of post-punky indie rock goodness from Brooklyn three piece Household. The guitar playing really stands out here; quirky lines and riffs that wouldn’t sound unusual in a B-52′s song. Household also kinda remind me of a fun version of The Evens... Tayla Cooper’s vocals are understated and dry, and perfectly fit the bare bones production. I’m still coming back to this one seven years later, a winner. -Kris
