Thirst • Atash • العطش
First-time director Tawfik Abu Wael gives us a movie that is both family tragedy and ambiguous political parable about displaced Palestinians in Israel.
Its scorched landscape makes it look like a Middle Eastern spaghetti western. Non-professional Hussein Yassin Mahajne plays Shukri, an angry and defeated Palestinian man in middle-age who has taken his family out of the city to live in a deserted valley; he sets up a rickety water-pipeline from a hillside spring to run all the way down to a single tap, and makes his son stand guard over it in a paranoid rota with himself.
Shukri has a dark and guilty secret, and victim status is difficult to assign in this gripping film, in which politics and history have, at one or two removes, shaped a mysterious fable of transgression.
I hope you appreciated this article. Before you move on, I was hoping you would consider taking the step of supporting the Guardian’s journalism.
From Elon Musk to Rupert Murdoch, a small number of billionaire owners have a powerful hold on so much of the information that reaches the public about what’s happening in the world. The Guardian is different. We have no billionaire owner or shareholders to consider. Our journalism is produced to serve the public interest – not profit motives.
And we avoid the trap that befalls much US media – the tendency, born of a desire to please all sides, to engage in false equivalence in the name of neutrality. While fairness guides everything we do, we know there is a right and a wrong position in the fight against racism and for reproductive justice. When we report on issues like the climate crisis, we’re not afraid to name who is responsible. And as a global news organization, we’re able to provide a fresh, outsider perspective on US politics – one so often missing from the insular American media bubble.
Around the world, readers can access the Guardian’s paywall-free journalism because of our unique reader-supported model. That’s because of people like you. Our readers keep us independent, beholden to no outside influence and accessible to everyone – whether they can afford to pay for news, or not.

If everyone who reblogs this post donates $5 (which I now know is the minimum you can donate on gofundme) to at least one of these, think about how fast we can help them all reach their respective goals
reminder that donating just a few $ to gofundme campaigns actually helps, you don't have to donate huge amounts if you don't have the funds, every little bit is useful. give $10, $5, even $1. it all adds up. don't scroll past because you think you can't help. help in your own capacity. donate a dollar. share and speak up.

Our Boys’ (HBO) In 2014, the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers by Hamas spurred a retaliation, the kidnapping, beating and burning alive of Mohammed Abu Khdeir, a 16-year-old Palestinian living in Jerusalem. The writer-directors Hagai Levi (“In Treatment”), Joseph Cedar (“Beaufort”) and Tawfik Abu Wael (“Last Days in Jerusalem”) focused this 10-part dramatization on the murder of Khdeir, the agony of his family, and the work of Israeli police and prosecutors to find and convict the killers. That led to condemnation (and a call for a boycott) by the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and resulted in a relentlessly absorbing, constantly surprising examination of fear, fanaticism and violence.
