“Next up, the boutique.” “Ugh, didn’t you just get a new pair of shoes?” “Yes but the movie premier is this Sunday and I still need a coat to match the purple lipstick I got.”

Leona rolled his eyes as he walked alongside the beautiful blond beside him. The pair are out in the locale mall of the Sunset Savannah to buy some birthday gifts for Cheka and some stuff themselves, the place was luckily not so busy just how they liked it with the sun shining a photo perfect golden hour though the large glass ceiling and equally large glass windows that nearly take some of the tall walls. Leona isn’t fond of the idea of shopping, never been a fan since he was a child, but Vil tends to know how to handle any amount of money with a shopping trip, where to buy, how to get good deals, and even spot out fakes versus genuine items of brands. 

Vil’s heels stop clicking as he turns to the fountain to read a list on his phone, “After the boutique we should visit the Toy Hospital to see if we can find a little stuffed animal for Cheka, I was thinking of an elephant since he seems to like them so far. After that we could stop by the sweets for something nice to add—” Leona’s emerald eyes narrow as he listens to Vil drone and ramble about their plans as he… window shops. Vil’s white tight jeans: 250 Maldol. Vil’s sun hat with a yellow ribbon: 180 Madol. Vil’s well done, well crafted brown eyeshadow that forms his eyes perfectly and works well with his contour: 115 Madol. Vil’s golden jewelry set: 1,500 Madol. Vil was worth all that and so much more than any receipts can say. Vil is surprisingly humble when it comes to certain fancy items given how he looks and where he was raised, but the prince just loves spoiling his little tausi ya dhahabu. It even gives him a little something in return later—

Leona smirks and follows suit after the pretty diva, a hand already finding way around that slim waist with a proud grin.

Binondo: 57 Brews x The Hub x Toho Panciteria Antigua

It is no secret that my dad and I frequent Binondo. I have posted photos, albums and even a video on Facebook documenting our field trip to Chinatown. Later this month, his high school classmates will be coming home from the US for an annual visit and again, my dad suggested they do a food trip in his urban playground in Manila.

To make sure his friends get a class A experience, we visited a restaurant they were planning to dine in during their stay just to see which dishes he would order on the day of.

But before we stepped inside the proposed lunch site, we went inside a random coffee shop (to pee) and to order coffee.

57 Brews

This cafe boasts of "styles and brews" because not only is it a coffee shop, it is also a spa, salon and barbershop all rolled into one small innovative Chinoy (Chinese Pinoy) business set up by a former military officer who retired at age 57; hence the number in the name.

The spaced was split into two - the dining area and the salon with a somewhat small events area on the second floor. It was also sandwiched between two establishments along Escolta street in Binondo.

My dad interviewed the barista and he narrates that he used to work overseas and when he came home, he ventured into this craft of coffee brewing.

They had mighty strong coffee! even their decaf did not seem like decaffeinated to me.

This is a quaint, unpretentious, mom-and-pop sort of business with cheery people who are happy to give you drinks or a haircut! :)

After our coffee break, we walked our way through the streets of Binondo. We squeezed in a quick tour of the Hub a few minutes before lunch.

Unless you have not noticed, that is my dad's silhouette in the background. He was personifying a regal gentleman, strolling along the streets of London with his would-be wooden, hand-carved cane.

THIS is the Hub, it is where artists exchange their masterpieces for money. I surprisingly caved in and bought myself a cat graphic poster (easy bait! haha) and an old Manila architecture postcard. I have come to realize that I am my dad's daughter- I grew a penchant for old things, especially Filipiñana-related stuff (books, artifacts etc.).

UKAY GALORE! if you are the eccentric type, this is up your alley.

I used to be obsessed with this when I was a kid. I remember going to a nearby sari-sari store in our neighborhood and buying a few pieces of Plastic Balloon. This was rumored to be toxic but I did not care. I would try so hard to form a solid ball but not being able was also a delight in itself because smashing the ruined balloon on one's head was a satisfying!

Bakla, Bakla Paano Ka Ginawa?

They had a barbershop within the premises! You have so many choices for a haircut! haha.

Finally, lunch.

Toho Panciteria Antigua

For more than a century, this restaurant has been serving Chinese food to its customers. It was also claimed that even our National Hero, Jose Rizal dined here when he was a student.

Characterized as the oldest restaurant in the country, founded in 1888, Toho Panciteria Antigua can be found along Tomas Pinpin street and it was built by five Chinese friends; the four having gone back to China while the fifth's family has been passing on this business from generation to generation.

The restaurant does not look its age but it has withstood the calamities of time - a series of wars and a pandemic in today's modern era.

Asado and Lumpiang Shanghai are must-haves in every table, but we just ordered one the them (Lumpiang Shanghai) plus other Chinese favorites.

Yang Chow Fried Rice (380 pesos for medium order)

Sweet and Sour Pork (220 pesos for small order)

Kangkong with garlic (165 pesos for a small order)

Tausi Fish Fillet (230 pesos for a small order)

We were mighty satisfied with every bite! the portions were also huge (even for the small orders) that we had enough food to take home for dinner.

And that sums up our Binondo adventure. Hopefully, my dad's trip with his friends will be equally pleasant if not better.
