Why is it Important to Check PNR Status Before Boarding IRCTC Trains?
When a traveller books a ticket to take a train across India, IRCTC generates a PNR number. It ensures that a traveller has a valid ticket. A passenger can use the option to check PNR Status to validate important travel details, such as if their ticket is confirmed.
On apps like RailMitra, checking PNR Status from anywhere is simple. It offers a variety of rail tools for status checks, ensuring that travellers are kept informed by checking their IRCTC PNR status online.
What is PNR?
PNR is the acronym for Passenger Name Record. IRCTC generates a unique 10-digit identification number for anyone who books a ticket to travel by train, known as PNR Number. It is kept in the database for the record of Indian Railways authorities on which the name, gender, age, berth number and the date of the journey are mentioned.
Codes Displayed While Verifying PNR Status
Every passenger must be aware of the different codes before boarding a train that appears when you check PNR Status. These codes are :
CNF(Confirmed)
It is a code that appears only when a passenger has a confirmed booking and the allotted seat number.
RAC(Reservation Against Cancellation)
This code appears when a passenger can travel and two passengers share the lower side berth of each compartment. If a confirmed passenger does not board a train, a full berth is provided to the passenger with a RAC ticket.
WL(Waiting List)
The waiting list consists of numbers like 1 and 2. It appears when a seat is not allotted to the passenger and can be confirmed only when other passengers cancel their tickets.
GNWL(General Waiting List)
You can see this code whenever there are high chances of ticket confirmation.
TQWL(Tatkal Quota Waiting List)
This code appears when a ticket is booked under the Tatkal scheme seats available in Tatkal booking are exhausted. Even without RAC, TQWL gets confirmed.
NOSB(No Seat Birth)
The code is generated for child passengers below the age of 11. It means that no specific seat will be provided for the passenger.
PQWL(Pooled Quota Waiting List)
It appears when you book a ticket from the origin station of the train to its intermediate station. Passengers under this quota have a separate waitlist, and many small stations share it.
RLWL(Remote Location Waiting List)
It is displayed when a passenger with a ticket on the waiting list is booked for two intermediate stations.
Why is it Necessary to Check PNR Status before Boarding a Train?
The PNR number is important information for a passenger, so one should ensure it is verified before boarding the train. It is crucial to check PNR Status due to various reasons :
Provides Latest Information
Railway authorities update the PNR Status frequently. Depending on the cancellation of tickets and the availability of seats, the status of PNR changes every minute. Thus, its verification helps passengers know if any changes are made to the status of their trains, like timing, platform number or seat no. etc. It also updates a passenger regarding the upcoming stations. PNR verification displays the update in case a ticket gets upgraded.
Coach and Berth Information
PNR has information regarding a passenger’s coach and seat number, and the verification of PNR confirms the coach and berth number of a passenger. The PNR will display the berth or coach number once the ticket is confirmed.
Reservation Confirmation
Checking the PNR status helps passengers confirm whether their tickets are reserved and their seats are confirmed. Prediction of PNR status prevents passengers from confusion and rushing at the last moment while boarding the train with other passengers.
Ensures Safety
By verifying your PNR Status, you can ensure the safety of other passengers on the train by preventing the use of fake tickets. The passenger for whom the PNR is generated is the rightful owner of the ticket. PNR also helps the railway authorities to maintain a record of passengers’ information and location.

Henceforth, the PNR status of a WL ticket continues changing until the last diagram is set up upon the arrival of the excursion.

When any traveler drops his/her train ticket of a similar excursion as yours, which is either in CNF state or RAC state or WL state over your WL number then your WL number will diminish and will draw nearer to RAC or CNF PNR status.

The maximum speed of passenger trains varies, with the Vande Bharat Express running at a peak speed of 180 km/h (110 mph).
In the freight segment, IR runs 8,479 trains daily. The average speed of freight trains is around 24 km/h (15 mph). The maximum speed of freight trains varies from 60 to 75 km/h (37 to 47 mph) depending on their axle load with 'container special' trains running at a peak speed of 100 km/h (62 mph).
As of March 2020, Indian Railways' rolling stock consisted of 2,93,077 freight wagons, 76,608 passenger coaches and 12,729 locomotives. IR owns locomotive and coach-production facilities at several locations in India. IR had 1.254 million employees as of March 2020, making it the world's eighth-largest employer.
The government has committed to electrifying India's entire rail network by 2023–24, and become a "net-zero (carbon emissions) railway" by 2030.
Indian Railways is opening up to private operators for the first time since it was nationalised in 1951. Starting from March 2024, private companies will be allowed to run passenger services on one of the world’s largest networks, which handles some 8.4 billion people every year.
The plan was announced earlier summer 2020 by the current owner and operator, the Indian Ministry of Railways. Initially slated to start in March and then postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the scheme is expected to play a key role in the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and its goal is to attract investment in the country.
The government has identified 109 busy routes across India to run 151 private trains for 35 years. These are routes with huge waiting lists and offer a potential to earn. The 151 trains represent only around 5 percent of total trains run in India.
For the project, the routes are divided into 12 clusters based out of major city centres, such as Patna, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Prayagraj, Howrah, Chennai, Chandigarh, and two each for Delhi and Mumbai.
Each cluster is an independent business project, inviting a private player to manage. It also has an indicative project cost and average train distance of 900-1052km. The contract period of 35 years is based on the fact that trains and engines are usually in service for around three decades.
Task in hand:
You are the Private Operator who has entered into a contract with the Indian Railways. The contract states that you are going to manage the Secundrabad Cluster Project and the estimated indicative cost is Rs.2200 Crores. You are responsible for the following:

Know How Tatkal Software Help you to Book your Urgent Ticket
In India most of people like to travel by train because of travel easiness in train and fewer fairs compare to other transport methods. Whether you are travelling for small or long distance, whether you are travelling individually or on a business trip, rail transportation is easy way to move. In railway you can book your ticket online.
Also if you need to go on urgent basis and have no time for advance booking, Indian railway offer The tatkal booking of ticket, in which you can get rail ticket on immediate basis by paying some extra amount. Tatkal IRCTC ticket booking scheme allows people to book in advance and reserve the seats or bunk beds needed for travel. Tatkal IRCTC ticket booking scheme provides passengers with a highly beneficial ticket service for travellers. It will help them take a short trip as well as long distance.
Tickets are actually booked at the end under Hindi, meaning tatkal, immediate. Tatkal IRCTC ticket booking scheme ensures that early booking period (ARP) begin one day prior to travel date. Now with the advancement in technology Indian railways also launch their TATKAL SOFTWARE for the online booking of tatkal tickets. However, there are some criteria that must be considered before booking a tatkal ticket. Below are some features about tatkal software.
Key points for booking Tatkal tickets:
1. Tatkal tickets can only be booked for selected trains one day before the trip from the departure station. Class AC (2A / 3A / CC / EC / 3E) tickets begin at 10:00 on the opening day. For classes without AC (SL / FC / 2S), the reservation will start at 11:00.
2. Tatkal tickets cannot be reserved for First AC and Executive Class.
3. Women and general rates cannot be selected with a taktkar ticket.
4. Concessions such as granting a tatkal ticket to senior citizens are not applicable.
5. Compared to the previously booked regular ticket fare, Tatkal tickets charge an additional 10% basic fee in the second class and 30% basic fee in all other classes. The minimum and maximum fees charged for Tatkal tickets depends upon the route and train.
6. Issued for actual travel distance, not end-to-end. This is subject to restrictions that apply to trains. You can book the same seat or bed at another station. Certain trains do not have a tatkal option. Therefore, it is recommended that you check availability before booking.
7. There is no money back guarantee if you cancel a confirmed reservation. Tickets booked using tatkal software for Tatkal on the waiting list will be charged according to existing railway rules.
8. You can book Tatkal online. Must be selected in the Tatkal checkbox on the Trip Planning page. Please note that not all trains have tatkal seats. Proceed only after checking availability.
Characteristic of railway tatkal plan:
· To prevent misuse of the Tatkal scheme, appropriate safeguards are built into the scheme. Some of these are:
· One of the passengers booked on the private ticket must present the proof of identity provided during the trip (in the original). All passengers booked for that ticket are considered travelling without a ticket and will be charged accordingly. .
· Refunds for cancellation of confirmed tatkal tickets are not allowed. .
· Rename function is not allowed for reservations made on a tactical basis. .
· The service agent book one tatkal ticket per train per day. Now one can also book it online using tatkal software.
· Automatic logout after transaction completion.
Comparison of IRKTC Tatkal Ticket Booking and Premium Tatkal Ticket Booking:
1. According to IRCTC, premium tactical rates represent a rate component that increases with subsequent bookings. Premium Tatkal (PT) ticket bookings are much more expensive than Tatkal due to dynamic fares. Ticket prices vary depending on the reservation fee and availability.
2. Tatkal Early Booking Period (ARP) and Tatkal Premium Ticket Reservations are the same. Tickets are booked one day prior to the actual date of travel, excluding the date of travel. The rate reservation will start at 10am. The IRCTC mentioned the AC class and the 11am non-AC class.
3. RAC (Reservation for Cancellation) / Waiting list ticket reservations are allowed for tatkal fees, but not for premium tatkal fees.
4. Agents are not allowed to book tickets for premium tatkal fees. Regarding reservations for Tucker Cal tickets, IRCTC reports that IRCTC Web service agents can book Tucker tickets online per train per day. But this can be done with help of tatkal software.
5. However, all basic rules for booking tatkal fees via the internet also apply to premium tatkal fees, added by IRCTC.
So if you want to book your ticket on urgent basis then take help of tatkal software.

Which WL list ticket gets confirmed first? Either Tatkal or the General
In India, railway network is one of the most affordable ways which connects people to their destination. One of the pre-requisite to reach your destination on time is to book ticket in advance before the date of journey. One can book tickets either offline at Passengers Reservation System (PRS) counters or online using IRCTC ticket booking website. All tickets booked or issued have a 10-digits PNR number and a maximum of six passengers can travel through a single PNR. But only having tickets, doesn’t assure that your journey is confirmed. The Indian Railways has various types of quotas for passengers to book their ticket like the general quota, premium tatkal quota, tatkal quota, pooled quota, ladies quota, foreign tourist quota etc. However, maximum number of tickets are booked in Tatkal and general quota. Also, both the tickets have a valid PNR number through which passengers can order food online in train at any stations en route.
Which Ticket gets confirmed first? Is it the General or Tatkaal?
From decades, passengers have been confused about which rail quota tickets get confirmed. The mechanism of getting confirmed tickets are highly dependent on several factors like popularity of train, routes it cover, classes of travel etc. However, on a hypothetical basis, it’s the general quota tickets which have high probability of getting confirmed. General wait list tickets (GNWL) are the first which get confirmed than tatkal wait list. The highest number of seats are allocated for the general quota in every train. The rule of 120 days of ARP (Advance Reservation period) is followed for booking general quota tickets. The tickets only get confirmed only if the passengers who have booked before you for the same journey cancel their ticket. The status of ticket can be checked with the help of 10-digit PNR number. For e.g. If it shows the status GNWL 4/ WL 3 it means ticket waiting list is three and will be confirmed only if the three of the passengers’ who have already booked before you for the same journey will cancel their tickets. Without cancelation, seats can’t be allotted to WL members.
What is Tatkal Quota in Indian Railways? Tatkal quota is the scheme introduced by Indian Railways and acts as a primary option for the passengers’ having unplanned travel or on an urgent basis. Tatkal tickets are often used by passengers’ who aren’t able to get confirmed ticket in General Quota and need to travel on an emergency service. Passengers’ can book tatkal ticket on all express/superfast trains by paying extra charge over the base fare. The tatkal quota is available for all classes except for unreserved and reserved first AC class. Tatkal quota booking starts for AC class (except 1 AC) from 10 AM on the previous day of journey from the originating station and booking for Non- AC class will start from 11 AM. Under this quota there’s no RAC and once the all seats are booked in this quota TQWL ticket are issued.
Recommended Read: What is Premium Tatkal and How to Book Tickets in this Quota?
What is General quota in Indian Railways?
General quota is also known as “Quota for the Common Nan”. It has maximum number of seat available in every train. Passengers are advised to book their ticket in this quota 120 days in advance to get a confirm ticket for a smooth journey and fixed seat. If there is waitlist in this quota, then it is called as a general quota wait list (GNWL). The confirmed seats for WL will be allotted to the passengers based on cancellation and chance of getting confirmed seat is higher under this quota. One needs to check their PNR status regularly, as there’re chances of shift in the WL to RAC where two passengers share the side lower berth on a sitting basis.
Charges of Tatkal ticket: The charges of tickets under this quota are considerably high as compared to the general and other quota. The charges are decided on the basic fare and a specific percentage of the basic fare. The additional charges are subjected to minimum and maximum fare as given below:
Minimum Tatkal Charges
· Second seater (2S, reserved)- Rs 10 · Sleeper Class (SL)- Rs 100 · AC 2 Tier (2 AC)- Rs 400 · 3 AC – Rs 300 · CC- Rs 125 · Executive class- Rs 400
Maximum Tatkal Charges
· Second seater (2S, reserved)- Rs 15 · Sleeper Class (SL)- Rs 200 · AC 2 Tier (2 AC)- Rs 500 · 3 AC – Rs 400· CC- Rs 225 · Executive class- Rs 500
