Thinking Aloud About Film: Ritrovato Round-up 2024
Richard and I return to the podcast with our Ritrovato Round-up. Last year I couldn’t go due to health reasons and I interviewed him; this year, the tables were turned and he interviews me. Ritrovato is so vast and generous in its programming that everyone who attended would have had a different experience of the festival. This is an account of mine. We criticise the booking system and people’s…

I do believe Ibarra is based on Rizal but I wouldn’t really say he is his self insert. Rizal is wealthy, he did study abroad, he loved his country, etc. like Ibarra. However, Ibarra left it, became Simoun and contributed to the suffering of his motherland. Rizal sprinkled his traits on Ibarra but he didn’t write Ibarra to be him. Ibarra feels more like a criticism and a warning character, someone whose flaws and mistakes should be avoided. Elias seems like someone Rizal would like to be. (like uh an oc whos sort of written to be a better version of you in a way) Tasio also seems like he has a lot in common with Rizal, I don’t remember but I think he studied being a doctor to cure his mom as well? I forgot, I just know Tasio shares something with Rizal too
TLDR: I don’t think Ibarra is a self-insert. He’s more of an oc based on himself; same with Elias and Pilosopo Tasyo

I do believe that most of what Digna will do, if not everything, regarding Fina will be out of genuine love and concern. If she’s trying to get Fina to open up, it is to try to alleviate some of her pain and to keep her promise to Isidro, that she’ll take care of her as if she were her own daughter. I don’t think she will knowingly manipulate her to have something to hold over Marta’s head.
I see a path ahead where Fina, as someone who has shared the same space with the De la Reinas and the Merinos all her life and is aware of all the comings and goings in that household but somehow remains neutral in this all-out war, can make Digna take a step back and reconsider her strategy or at least where to direct her ire. If someone as good-hearted and noble as Fina (and Isidro as well) sees the good in Marta, perhaps she got it wrong, right? I don’t know if this is just wishful thinking, though. Were she to take advantage of Fina’s love and trust in her, she would be well beyond redemption, and this series does a fantastic job working within grey areas and making morally grey characters sympathetic. I mean, if Damián can change for the better, why can’t Digna, too, before it’s too late?

I set out to spitball about "toxic old man yaoi" dynamic between two of my Iron Warrior OCs based on a random thought I've had earlier today.
I end up doing that and also spitballing a partial rewrite/adjustment to the backstory of their whole warband to more accurately justify why a group fixated on "keeping true to the (pre-Heresy) roots" that disdains Chaos and the Warp can still include Heresy-era Astartes (who aren't entombed in a Dreadnought, abusing stasis or made several milennia worth of a time-leap during Warp transit) as late as M41 and accept recruits with hybrid geneseed. All so I can get to a hypothetical scene where an ancient, effectively half-mechanized Apothecary can bark "it's not like I trust you or anything, you Dornian mongrel" to an Imperial Fists successor-turned-Iron Warrior squad sergeant who's currently patiently cleaning out the tubes in his respirator (he's not even Apothecarion-trained, his presence is an oddly specific request from Lord Tasios).

Me está encantando todo! Marta's revenge, which bites her in the ass but also forges a relationship between her and Tasio and with their father. Fina, who is about to find out everything and the uncertainty of how she'll react. Me encanta que passar página is not as easy as Marta thinks and that Fina is still traumatised and needing a better understanding from Marta. I respect the fact that they haven't miraculously let it all go; it's clear evidence of character development. A new Fina is going to emerge from this horror, and I'm eager to see her. Caráter peleón is going to be replaced by a more authoritative figure.
Me encanta la trama de Pelayo and I'm curious to see how Marta will deal with it all. It is an opportunity for her to stand up as a woman who needs no one but herself to raise proudly and rightly earn the respect for her solo achievements. I think their dynamic will be interesting.
As for everything else, let's not forget that although everyone is in love with Marta de La Reina, her heart is already and irremediably taken and she is in a committed relationship with Fina. Trust in continuity, embrace the process, brace yourself for the curvas and have fun.

Marta de La Reina always follows the rules. She has always do it, for her entire life.
Tumblr media
An then she fell in love with Fina and everything changed:
- she left her feelings emerge
- she succumbs under the jelousy
- she fights her family and her husband like never before
- she accepts to put her ambition aside for Fina's safety
- she accepts herself and get pride and strenght in that
- she left her passional self emerge, with Fina but at work and in friendship too (like when she saves Claudia's job despite the fact that she is unmerried and pregnant)
Tumblr media
- she says loud and clear that Fina is everything to her to all the people that ask her
She doesn't care anymore about the rules when it comes to Fina, so it's not so hard to understand her need to protect her even with violence.
And is it really wrong? What is wrong in the need of safety?
How is it possibile to judge a woman that saw what a man did to the love of her life, try to walk every legal way to get justice but the law is anyway in that very man's side?
Tumblr media
Is so wrong for that woman search for justice or revenge against the most vicious and atrocius crime ever? This is something that can't even be compared with all the others crime that the de La Reina family did.
I deeply understand what Marta is feeling and how she is thinking right now, I think she won't go on with her project and I hope that in addition to Fina, Tasio will be the one who will make her change her mind and maybe this could start some kind of relationship between brother and sister. And Tasio will be up to Carmen for once!
Tumblr media
Whatever will happen I am really curious but if I could choose I'd like to see Marta kill Santiago with her bare hands - or with a gun - in defense of Fina.
And it would be glorious!
#Marta de La Reina seeking for revenge
#I'd like to see Fina react to this kind of Marta
#I am all in for everything
#they never disappointed us
#so they have my complete trust

Capítulo 12
- Mafin rewatch (Sueños de Libertad)
Here we go. It’s the photographer. I don’t know if I’m ready for this yet, I haven’t even found the seatbelt yet, but we’re already taking off.
Marta wanting something modern, but knowing very well not to try to be too transgressive. A quiet kind of revolution that sneaks up on you is to be preferred. She wants a campaign ad that plays on a woman’s own agency though. I don’t know how to tell her, but that’s still a pretty hot topic no matter how much traditionalism you try to steep it in. I approve though. Sisters doing it for themselves, so to speak.
Hihi, her shocked eyebrows when he notices the perfume she’s wearing.
Tumblr media
Oh honey. You clueless little inexperienced puppy. I can’t unsee my own perspective or hindsight, but I wonder to what extent we were supposed to believe that something might happen between her and the photographer. I assume most straights did, but even for them - I mean that opening credit.
Either way, Marta being a clever business woman and a closeted feminist is nice. Smart and smart. Hits my spot.
Fina mocking Claudia as the lavender triplets are having coffee together is cute. She also catches on to Carmen’s sadness and ask if it’s in relation to Voldemort. Carmen reveals she’s not able to tell if she should do the right thing with Tasio or follow her heart. Fina deadpans and tells her the heart is a treacherous mistress. She is the lesbian friend every straight and bisexual woman needs.
Tumblr media
The photographer is a bit creepy though. It’s not cool going around photographing women without their knowledge or consent. Especially not when you have a moustache, that just makes it twelve times as creepy. I’m sorry, but it’s the truth.
Carmen covering Tasio’s gambling ass. You hate to see it.
Marta for the first time on this show getting truly excited about something. Excited about her idea of selling their latest perfume through a more relatable woman than your standard model. The joy she expresses when the photographer comes back with a whole portfolio full of pictures of the shop girls is fucking pure. This isn’t just an ice queen, this is a woman trying really fucking hard to make a difference in her own way. She has a vision and I honestly don’t think it’s only about the cashflow. I do think she wants a different world for herself and for other women too.
Tumblr media
This scene also hits with one of those lines that are pretty fundamental to her as a character, even though she likes what he’s done, she tells him she won’t make a decision “hot”. She needs to let the emotions land and turn it all over in peace. This is Marta at her core. Everything about her as an emotional being can be narrowed down into this. She did the exact same thing with Petra. She gathered the data, went away, made a case for herself and then returned with a plan of action. If you want Marta’s cheat code, then it’s this behaviour. Pretty much everything else about her will fall into place when you understand this. And the best way of breaking her is to force a reaction out of her before she’s had a chance to digest in silence.
Tumblr media
Yeah, even if we ever were meant to think something was about to happen with the photographer they also made sure to be pretty fucking unsubtle about the real direction they were taking this story in.

What really amuses me (or annoys, depending) is that we always manage to look for more than meets the eye, assuming the show has more depth to it, when in truth it’s lacking in so many ways.
We seem to forget what we’re dealing with here. And what that is? Is a novela, pure and simple. A Spanish one, true. But a novela just the same. And while in the beginning, for the most part, quality prevailed? It’s more and more obvious the show is becoming plagued by the inconsistencies of its genre.
We’ll never have a sensitive topic such as SA treated with the care and empathy it deserves (if anything, it encourages the message that victims are better off if they keep silent; the SA itself and the inherent misogyny? they were just background noise for the now 20+ episodes narrative of a woman suffering the consequences of looking for justice that was legally denied)
We’ll never see Fina’s recovery as it should have been treated.
We’ll never see Marta’s own trauma addressed.
I severely doubt we’ll see them healing together in a way that feels rewarding, empathetic and well thought out. We’ll get hints that they spent the night together, that they talked about their feelings and addressed the problems they’re facing. Hints and more hints. Surface level depictions that don’t really bother going beneath the surface. One of those high-speed trains that seldom stop at any station for more than a few minutes, the scenery a blur at the edge of one’s vision. Expecting more? Well, it might be asking for too much. We either enjoy what we can and as much as we can, or we desist. Plain and simple.
As for more of today’s events?
1. Just like Marta is a grown up, capable of making her own decisions? So is Tasio. For Carmen to lay all the blame at Marta’s feet is ridiculous. As is the show persisting in comparing her to Jesús, who is a de facto muderer and whose violent actions don’t have repercussions + let’s add Don Pedro to the list, whose revenge ended with the murder of the one responsible for his son’s death - I doubt there’ll be consequences as, after all, he’s a man and allowed to get away with it. For Marta though? Pandora’s box and all its blessings. May I just say succumbing to rage and helplessness one time, does not a violent person make, nor does it undo the moral tapestry of Marta’s character (for all the show loves to punish her for it).
But I’m digressing. Tasio is not a saint and to pretend otherwise is laughable (Carmen herself suspected he orchestrated the entire thing to curry favour with his father? I mean. Her trust in him is somewhere below sea level, no need to pretend otherwise. More so, she seems to forget it was Damián who paid for Tasio’s out-of-jail-card: claiming Marta’s family wouldn’t help him is borderline absurd). Marta didn’t force him to do anything, he chose to help her of his own free will. And at the end of the day? Marta never shies away from doing the hard thing: taking accountability. And she does it every single damn time, no matter how hard it is. (let’s see if Tasio ever gets there, fully). And I now find myself needing a scene where Fina defends Marta with Carmen.
2. They found the most contrived way of using Marta’s journal against her - if it is her journal, that is; for all we know it’s Marta’s calculus notebook (Santiago invading their safe space and just so happening to find it laying there? It’s not only supremely absurd but a sacrilege as well, yet another violation of their intimacy). Rather funnily, this show might be trying to preach violence is not the answer yet here we are, ascending to the next level altogether (I personally don’t see any other way to be rid of Santiago - his demise needs to be imminent and it needs to happen). Not to mention how outlandish it is that a nobody is able to get into Fina’s cell, waltz into Marta’s office or walk onto their property like so? This level of absurd is top-tier for sure.
3. The one consistent thing? Marta’s love for Fina and Fina’s love for Marta. That hasn’t changed and it won’t (it’s very much obvious Marta is nothing but irritated with Pelayo and for good reason: that man is like fungus, chemical treatment needed)
Oh well. Since the inane seems to be the way? Let’s join the circus: Santiago is moved to tears upon reading Marta’s journal and gives them his blessing, for Pelayo and Santiago it’s love at first ‘stache and they buy the property next to Marta’s so they can be felices los quatro, Jesús launches a business promoting hair-growth (dar en el calvo) and Eladio writes a book in prison (from SIcario to NOcario).
On the bright side? Flirty and Horny Fina is back tomorrow? Or so it would seem. She’s been dearly missed 😌 Furthermore? For everything that’s not being said, shown or addressed? It’s still a feat Mafin remains the healthiest relationship on the show. No doubt about it!!!

Tasio (Montxo Armendáriz, 1984)
A thrill to see this newly restored classic, which permits one to fully appreciate José Luis Alcaine’s gorgeous cinematography. Director Montxo Armendáriz moves slowly into close-ups in a way that makes you feel you’re seeing into the very souls of the characters. Very beautiful and moving. Most Spaniards of a certain generation will recognise the way of life and the structures of feeling…

On another note
Fina's face when Tasio entered the shop was just priceless.

In conclusion, Alba is such a delicate actress, and we love her.

1. Once again, loving Damián’s growth. I hope his relationship with Fina develops further when Fina knows what Marta did with Santiago and the thug.
2. Piggybacking off #1, will Tasio finally find out why Marta needed Eladio’s services and who exactly was on the receiving end? Tasio being the useful brother is something I’m totally here for and he can be there for Marta when things with Eladio and Santiago go south. Also, the guy is more or less in Fina’s inner circle—one more person in their corner is never a bad thing.

fic: no body, no crime
pairing: Marta de la Reina/Fina Valero (Sueños de libertad)
rating: T
word count: 2k
summary:
It is a terrible idea. Truly the type of idea that ruins lives, wrecks relationships, destroys friendships. And yet, she cannot stop thinking about it. Murder.
AO3 link
--
After seeing the promo for episode 206 (Marta asking Tasio if he knew any thugs), I wanted to write a fic about it as soon as I possibly could. And so Marta gets to contemplate committing a murder, as a treat.
