So, I know the percentage of Tumblr users with the knowledge overlap to properly answer this question is low, but I have to ask it anyways.
Is it valid to argue that The Gorean Saga/Chronicles of Counter-Earth books are the first Harem Isekai?

I watched Conan the Barbarian (1982) today. it made me want to re-read Tarnsman of Gor so now I am. Fun.

rwby but set in the Hyborian age. jaune isn't a barbarian like conan but instead is a knight who actually belives and does his best to live up to the ideals of his station constantly saving damsels in distress only to return home to his oaths and shun the greater power and wealth he might gain from keeping the damsels. ruby is a destined warrior meant to fight against the eldritch gods that are utterly uncaring to humanity and it's place in the universe, supported by the sorcerer queen weiss, the cultist of the god of animals blake and her barbarian sister yang. pyrrha is queen of the kingdom jaune serves but can't seem to get through to him that she wants to be boned him. ren and nora are pyrrha's bodyguards and also want to bone/get boned by, him. but can't seem to get that idea across to him.
Much better thought out then the last one.
My first thoughts were mistakenly about the Tarnsman of Gor, or of Fire and Ice. It definitely combines the high-fantasy with the low-fantasy, which is wonderful. It's usually about OP hero, or entirely mundane heroes.
Since we're dealing with Eldritch Horrors, then Jaune's knight's resolve would help him keep his sanity, alongside with Ruby's irrational optimism. This let's them fight the horrors, (presumably Grimm, or not irrational Grimm).
Faunus is literally a Roman god, but if Blake's a Priestess, (high priestess?), then Fauna might be a better idea.
And Yang should be an Amazon. An actual Amazon. The horny for great heroes kind of Amazon.
Love the idea of this world.

TOP FIVE BOOKS OF 2023?
OUR WIVES UNDER THE SEA - JULIA ARMFIELD
it's good yea
i did not prepare evidence to back my claim, but describing your monster in detail is the same as killing it in your audience's mind. answering every question makes your work meaningless. there's nothing more to think about. the metaphor is obvious; the real horror is dying at home, slowly, inconveniently, being walled off from the people you love by your own mind. being trapped in emptiness until you can no longer think of anything. and a big eyeball.
PASSAGE - CONNIE WILLIS
what a beautifully structured book NO DON'T LOOK FOR SPOILERS DON'T LOOK AT THE PAGE COUNT IT'S THE SAME AS TWO NORMAL LENGTH BOOKS GO READ RIGHT NOW PLEASE
i want to read it again... Boy showed me a night to remember recently. very pretty. pointlessly tragic of course. i also want to see the titanic that everyone else watched, with the pretty hairstyling and the glitter.
VORKISIGANS GENERALLY - LOIS MCMASTER BUJOLD
i wanna reread the sharing knife. i love bujold's romance even more than i love her stunner tag murder mystery political adventure. i eat the fuck out of these novels.
EARTHSEA (except the other wind) - URSULA K. LEGUIN
it's not that i'm discriminating against the other wind for being transcribed later. i simply do not have it in print. every word of earthsea feels necessary and meaningful. the elegance of leguin's writing style is... thought i was bleeding out in tehanu. thought i was bleeding out in the tombs of atuan. a knife sharper than a razor.
OFIC MAG (hello @oficmag !!)
i was lucky enough to take advantage of their 'first three issues for $60' holiday sale! it's been some time since i read the first issue-- i have 'disconnected from my fannish identity' issues-- making it hard to review each piece here, but it well represents the diversity of fannish writing and i'm truly happy that i can support the project a little bit. betts and everyone else, you are doing amazing work
TARNSMAN OF GOR - JOHN NORMAN
what is my excuse for reading gor? it was on the shelf. it was There.
you might think that gor is merely bad, but aside from a meandering intro, humorless writing, isekai male power fantasy..... indescribable worldbuilding, so on and so forth… it’s interesting to see kink writing from the 60s. both leads are absolutely terrible people. it’s actually written that she’s Submissive and she wants to be there! wow! amazing! they both end up consenting to their kinky relationship on the slave kink planet before getting married and fucking on the back of a giant bird (what??). i’m not trying to make a moral judgment on anyone’s iddy porn but IF ANYONE HAS RECS FOR WRITING THAT IS ABOUT THE SUBMISSIVE IDENTITY… THAT ISN’T…. GOR….

Quotes of the Day
Tarnsman of Gor, John Norman | Book # 1 | Page # 93 December 1st, 2020
Then, to my astonishment, the daughter of the Ubar Marlenus, daughter of the Ubar of Ar, knelt before me, a simple warrior of Ko-ro-ba, and lowered her head, lifting and extending her arms, wrists crossed. It was the submission of the captive female. Without raising her eyes from the ground, the daughter of the Ubar said in a clear, distinct voice: “I submit myself.”
I was speechless for a moment, but then, remembering that harsh Gorean custom required me either to accept the submission or slay the captive, I took her wrists in my hands and said, “I accept your submission.”

So I've been watching the hate-fest for the Gor books, and (never having read them, because I'm female and strictly dominant and I already get enough of the "women are biologically predisposed to submission" line IRL from the kinds of dudes who read Gor novels) I thought it was a bit unfair. Sure, maybe the prose is kinda dated, but of COURSE there's gonna be all kinds of misogyny! They're fetish books! I'm sure some of the kinky femdom stuff I've written is just as bad, when viewed from outside a fetish lense. And yeah, the kind of dude who loves the Gor novels is very much not my kind of dude, but let's be real. Deeply ingrained misogyny is, uh, not exactly rare in SciFi-loving-dudes, and when you add being a dom to that it's unsurprising that at least a vocal minority of them are gonna be Terrible. Certainly, it's not the books' fault, I thought.
Last week, a copy of Tarnsman somehow made its way into my neighborhood's book swap. I swear I could *feel* Odin there, side-eyeing me expectantly while Loki tried not to cackle somewhere in the background. "It can't be as bad as they say. In fact, I'm Gonna Read This, purely so I can defend it on the internet! No kinkshaming on my watch!"
So I read it.
And I have. Regrets.
(Loki spent the entire time looking over my shoulder and laughing himself absolutely SICK, btw)
I told y'all. Me and @natalieironside told y'all and you don't believe us and that's on you because we look you in the eyes from these here Tunglr.hell blogs and say "These books are this bad" and still you doubt us.
The only things either of us so far have changed in Gor are to make it less fucking painfully shit

Heyo Brandon -- Do you have any sci-fi epics or 'sword and planet' books to recommend, and/or that served as an inspiration for your work on Prophet? Or even comics/manga of that genre (Also: How was McCaffrey's Dinosaur Planet?)
I just finished listening to the audio of TARNSMAN of GOR, which was very fun.
When I was doing Prophet I read a lot of 70′s Conan comics - The Buscema stuff especially. And the movie YOR hunter from the future is pretty great.
Dinosaur planet was fun.
It had a race of humans who evolved dense and strong on a low gravity world.
